I so agree with this one. In addition, I think that WvW achievements, dungeons, Mystic Forgesmith, personal story achievements, along with Crab Toss, Keg Brawl, and Custom Brawl should be “extra achievements” since I know many players that don’t do those in their daily routine.

But that’s exactly the reason why they are part of the dailies: to encourage players to try out new things, off their usual path.

Dailies made me try out costume brawl and keg brawl for the first time, along with other things.

I think it’s a good system.

Pixelpumpkin.4608

I can think of many logical reasons for ANet to not give me a free profession change OR a Harley but I can’t really think of a good reason why Southsun Punch wouldn’t count towards “drinks consumed”.

It’s not like people will magically get the achievement out of nowhere, Southsun Punch is still limited in supply. But it could have been an additional motivation to play Crab Toss for a little longer / a few more times.

PS: heroes’ elixir bottles are free, too.

Crab Toss is so much fun

in Last Stand at Southsun

Posted by: Pixelpumpkin.4608

Pixelpumpkin.4608

I’ve said it in other threads.

Whether you like it or not – ANet has invested dev time in creating Crab Toss. As long as some players enjoy it, I see no reason to remove it. It is easy enough to ignore for everybody else.

What is there to gain from removing it?
- Showing players that some content is temporary and that they have to return to GW2 frequently so they don’t miss out. But we already know this because of the PvE content and achievements.

What is there to gain from leaving it in?
- More time for players to gain difficult achievements
- Better chance for players to play with their own friends/guild once fewer people play Crab Toss
- Overall larger variety of mini-games throughout Tyria – a good thing

Suppose Southsun just sinks into the ocean forever, Crab Toss would have to go, too. But I don’t see that happen. And anyway, there would be ways to retain Crab Toss in another location.

I vote for leaving it in. Whether or not I personally plan on revisiting it shouldn’t and won’t be the deciding factor. Leave it in for everyone who likes to play.

Edit: obviously, nerf the rewards a little. But that should be easy to do.

I would like to add that if they Crab Toss Daily achievement rotated through a few more different things, that would help too in making it more inclusive, and catering to more different players’ abilities and playing styles:

- Crab Toss Champion,
- crab grabs,
- crab carries,
- denies and
- evades

As for the Crab Toss Daily as such, I would be happier if it rotated between Crab Toss Champion, crab grabs, crab carries, denies and evades to give it a little more variety and cater to different players’ abilities and preferred playing styles though.

Why force people to do silly stuff just to accomplish their daily anyway?

Who forces you?

I get my dailies every day without crab toss, keg brawl, costume brawl, dungeons or WvW; same as before the Southsun story.

There’s always 5 or more dailies that you can do without any of the “special” stuff, just play playing regular PvE.

For example, today:

- Daily Kill Variety
- Ascalonian Veteran Killer
- Daily Gatherer
- Group Event Completer
- Daily Feast

As a bonus
- Personal Story Completer
- Mystic Forgesmith

This is without Crab Toss, Costume Brawl, or WvW.

Frankly, I don’t see the problem.

Which class to complement a Warrior in PvE?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Pixelpumpkin.4608

Pixelpumpkin.4608

It doesn’t really matter. You or your friend should pick a class that is fun for them to play.

I’ve played in a tag team with my boyfriend as a Thief + Engineer combo since release and we managed fine, even though some people on here will tell you that that isn’t ideal. Other times I grouped up with a friend who is a ranger, and we did really well too.

I’ve run dungeons with all sorts of class mixes, sometimes without any tank builds, no warriors or guardians, and that works, too. Sometimes this means that you can’t brute force yourself through a mob and have to play differently, i.e. pull more individual enemies instead of zerging a mob; but I enjoy that playstyle which is why I play ranged weapon characters all the time.

So, whatever, really. Pick a class/playstyle that is fun for you, then you can’t go wrong.

I experienced this occasionally, but this has gotten a lot worse for me over the course of the last week. Whether it has anything to do with the latest patch or with the fact that I upgraded to 64bit windows I don’t know.

My friends list is virtually empty sometimes; I can’t whisper people back because allegedly they’re offline; I can’t see people in my party; or sometimes I can see them in the party list (listed as offline, but still showing with their portraits) but cannot see their blue dots on the mini-map.

This makes more advances tasks (like dungeon runs / fractals) really, really hard. I rely on the information how (health bar) and where (mini-map) other group members are.

Leveling in Southsun, a good or bad idea?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Pixelpumpkin.4608

Pixelpumpkin.4608

What the others said.

*Contra Southsun: —> If you like to solo, *this might not be the best idea
- in general, areas with hearts/vistas/POIs/WPs have more “free exp”
- Southsun is harder to survive / fighting mobs takes longer, so you fight fewer
- you may not have the levels to gather

*Pro Southsun: —> If you like to group up *or even zerg, this is a good opportunity
- it doesn’t matter where you do events as long as you do them
- new fun stuff, temporary content, now or never
- highly populated, so many people around to do group events with

And in general
- go where you have fun

Best advice ^.

At the time of Halloween, Wintersday and even Southsun, I was travelling for work a lot and had other things on my mind. I completed none (I think) of the related achievements. I did the Wintersday dungeon thing a couple of times only. I didn’t do either of the jumping puzzles.

I only got my Southsun reward chest because my boyfriend literally dragged me into the game for that event.

Later when I had to travel less for work, my schedule opened up a bit. I’ve been playing a lot more in the last 3 months. Sometimes I wish I had done the jumping puzzles, or at least gathered some of the crafting materials. But that’s not the choices I made at the time.

I do have my occasional regrets, but the decisions were my own, not ANet’s.

I also found out that the few times in my life when I missed something amazing due to circumstances I really, really couldn’t have changed (ranging from childbirth to funerals), I honestly didn’t care about amazing but trivial things anymore.

M. Crafting Stations are just too expensive

in Last Stand at Southsun

Pixelpumpkin.4608

Why do people always think that the pricing should be based on the gold to gem rate?

Okay.

I can buy a mobile crafting station and skip a loading screen for one euro.
Or I can wait through 15 seconds worth of loadings screens, craft in LA, and eat one euro worth of ice cream in real life.

In the world of micro transactions, one euro is a lot of money – I’m with the OP, I think it is too much money. You get 15 minutes worthof crafting, but essentially you only SAVE a few seconds. Since you probably won’t craft inside a dungeon or fractal, there’s simply not enough reason to spend the money.

I’d rather have ice cream.

Weapon Type: Whip

in Suggestions

Pixelpumpkin.4608

Hi guys! There has been some discussion about whips as a possible new weapon type in various sub forums and other threads such as “which weapon types would you andd and why?”
But surely whips deserve a thread of its own!
(I know of the theard in the ranger subforum, but but but… other classes want whips too.)

Here’s my thoughts (this is just me dreaming up something I would love to be able to play with):

Whips (in real life) can be used with main hand, off hand and dual-wielded. Whips can be used for noise, damage, and control (i.e. wrap an item or person).

Main hand: (mainly) damage
- Smack (moderate damage)
- Slice (less damage + bleed)
- Knock down (least damage + knock + cripple)

Off-hand: control
- Wrap (immobilize)
- Pull

Disclaimer: most skills do more than just 1 or 2 things at a time, but I wanted to keep the above list simple. But there is a lot of room to be creative with additional conditions for the class-based skills…

Classes who can use the whip - What I think

Ranger: off-hand
Excuse: pet control, “beastmaster style”
Enhancing the axe or sword in main hand.

Thief: off-hand
Excuse: catburglar, “catwoman style”
Enhancing dagger or sword in main hand.

Engineer: damage
Excuse: non-magical ranged weapon (short range), adventuring “Indy style”
An alternative to the main hand pistol skills, combines with off-hand pistol or shield.

Necromancer: dual-wield
Excuse: minion control, “evil dominator style”
Dual whips will make the necro look like a total boss.

Total combinations overview (I think they all work):
Axe + Whip (Ranger, Necromancer)
Sword + Whip (Ranger)
Dagger + Whip (Thief, Necromancer)
Sword + Whip (Thief)
Pistol + Whip (Thief)
Whip + Pistol (Engineer)
Whip + Shield (Engineer)
Whip + Whip (Necromancer)
Whip + Dagger (Necromancer)
Scepter + Whip (Necromancer)
Whip + Focus (Necromancer)
Whip +Warhorn (Necromancer)

Classes who can use the whip - What others think

I also hear people want the whip for Warriors, Mesmers and Elementalists. I’m not personally a fan of these combinations so this is not a priority to me, but nobody should feel left out so early in the discussion, so here goes:

Warrior: off-hand
Excuse: “gladiator style”. I don’t see any warrior trading their high damage weapon for a whip, but I guess they could use it as an alternative to the warhorn / shield if they would prefer some control skills over boons / protection.

Elementalist: I have no idea
I have never played an elementalist so I really don’t know. My personal opinion is that whips are non-magical weapons; or if you would like a “magical whip” instead that’s already in the game (lightning whip), or could be, as previously suggested, a scepter skin which would automatically be available to elementalists.

Mesmer: I have no idea
I haven’t spent enough time playing my mesmer either to really have an opinion outside of that I don’t really see how a whip would suit the otherwise posh and elusive style of a mesmer. But: if it was a scepter skin would automatically be available to mesmers (same as with eles and necros).

Crab toss win and daily.

in Last Stand at Southsun

Posted by: Pixelpumpkin.4608

Pixelpumpkin.4608

I agree that Crab Toss is not fun, and I was tempted to request that ANet remove it from the dailies, too. However, after talking to my guildies, there are people out there love it. It’s no different from the keg brawl dailies, which some people love, and some hate.

But it IS different from the keg brawl dailies. The keg brawl dailies rotate through different achievements (Keg Brawl Scorer, Keg Brawl Stealer, Keg Brawl Fumble Forcer) while Crab Toss is the same achievement every day (win a match).

The Crab Toss dailz should be similar to the Keg Brawl one – rotate through Crab Toss Champion, crab grabs, crab runs, and even other types from the “Top Player” list such as denies or evades.

That way, Crab Toss still would be in the dailies every day of the event, gently encouraging people to play, but give them different things to aim for. This would help experienced players against boredom, and inexperienced players because they might be better at evading than carrying. I, for instance, am a lot better at denying that crab grabbing and might even be tempted to take part in Crab Toss some more for a daily achievement point if denies were on the menu.

I have not seen a single Southsun Cove box. Perhaps I’m not playing as long as you (only ~2 hours a day), but it seems strange that I haven’t seen one. Perhaps I’m not killing enough Veteran Karkas. =/

All Southsun mobs have an equal chance of dropping the supply crates as far as I know. I’m with OP on this one as I already explained in another thread. Stop farming karkas, go farm skelks.

Yes, they all drop them, so stop farming skelks and kill mosquitos, they’re even faster and the respawns won’t aggro you in the back (I got several crates from animals.)

The crates also drop on whatever event mobs drop, so in any defend or skirmish events you have the same chance, with ADDED karma.

Help me pick a build for my engineer...

in Engineer

Posted by: Pixelpumpkin.4608

Pixelpumpkin.4608

This is great guys! Thank you for the input.

Where exactly do you want your damage to come from?

I’ve got my mind set on condition damage, I think.

In terms of traits, pick whatever enhances your primary source of damage. While the stat buffs are nice, it’s far more important to take the traits that enhance your weapon rather than the stats that enhance your damage type.

That is very useful information. Thanks a bunch. This makes it a lot easier for me to pick out stuff.

With all of these, you will be using your elixirs to stack useful boons on yourself, while dealing damage and supporting with your weapon abilities. Save Elixir S for when you are getting focused and need a reprieve, and in the builds with it, save elixir U for when you can be sure that you will have a full 6 seconds to unload your damage on your target.
If none of these builds look fun, then I’ll try and come up with more.

Again, very useful. I’ve used elixir U in this way under water a lot, but never in my regular toolbar.

My regular toolbar right now is:
- Elixir H
- Elixir Gun
- Bomb Kit for PvE (love the F3, too)
- Elixir B / Elixir C alternating, depending

When I use the elixir gun, I don’t need elixir C as it comes with its own “remove condition” skill, but when I need to remove conditions a lot (certain boss fights?), I add elixir C anyway. I guess I could use elixir U in the same slot, never really thought about this for some reason…

None of these builds are pro builds, none are OP FoTM builds, they’re just how a random person on the internet likes to play.

I am a random person on the Internet, too, so that’s fine

This is a dungeon build solely, it runs pistol/shield for more defense to protect yourself, and the shield 4 so that you can use it to trigger the aoe heal from your tool belt 1 slot.

The bombs will heal everyone in the group so when your bunched up you will be a real cleric. The elixir gun heal as well will be great for you and your group.

This is a very interesting take. I never saw the character as a healer type, but it is good to know that an engineer could be. I will have to think some more about whether I want to play this role in dungeons but it does sound fun.

Both your replies have been very inspiring.

What I learnt:

- fun traits are more important than stat points
- I should consider trying out shields
- engineers can be healers

I will play around with this some more and when I find a configuration that I think might work post it here!

Help me pick a build for my engineer...

in Engineer

Posted by: Pixelpumpkin.4608

Pixelpumpkin.4608

Okay, so I’ve levelled my engineer and traited (and outfitted) mostly going by gut feeling; now I think I want to turn her into a legitimate build. I read all the trait descriptions but they left me very confused. There is just too much information. I feel like a total n00b. :’-(

So I want to “properly” retrait and also get new exotic gear to match.

So maybe you have some input for me as to what specifically would be a good idea for me to do.

Some info:
- I mainly do PvE, and I want to get into dungeons and fractals more.
- I do PvP and WvW only sometimes and casually, so this shouldn’t be the main focus of the build
- I want to invest in toughness so I don’t feel SUPER squishy
- Right now, I mostly use the elixir gun and occasionally bombs. Also a fan of pistols (the rifle, not so much.)
- I can live without grenades, flamethrower, tools (I rarely use them) and I’m sort of “done” with turrets, except for the elite supply kit which is awesome.
- I’ve used the healing turret for the longest time. Right now I’m trying the other healing skill for the first time and I’m not sure yet whether I like it better or not. It does seem to give me more flexibility when I have to move around a lot.

My current build is 30/30/10/0/0 with
- exploit weakness
- incendiary power
- enhance performance
- hair trigger
- precise sights
- coated bullet
- explosive descent

So I think my build is all over the place right now and there is a lot to be optimized…

If there was one line that improves toughness, condition damage (or duration) and has elixir traits, that’d be the one I’d put all my points in, but sadly they’re spread out over 4 different trait lines What to do?

I’m grateful for any hints that help me unjumble this mess!

I’m not a fan of “rigging achievements” (including mesmer portals, but that’s another story) but with Craptacular seeming simply out of reach to many players, I can understand the frustration.

I’d rather have an achievement than an acheatment, but I cannot honestly say whether or not I would have resorted to rigging it while running out of time to get the achievement.

I managed, but only because circumstances were in my favour one night.

I think other players who feel they are hopeless (literally) at crab toss would have benefitted from 1. ascending difficulty as they progress through the mini game, 2. more varied achievements and 3. being able to play with/against friends.

Dragons and their minions

in Lore

Posted by: Pixelpumpkin.4608

Pixelpumpkin.4608

Sooooo the elder dragons all seem to have their different ways of gaining control over creatures (and people). These ones are obvious to me:

Zhaitan – “Risen”
Jormag – “Icebrood” or “Corrupted”
Kralkatorrik – “Branded”
Primordus – “Destroyer”

For Jormag it says “Icebrood” on the wiki, but “corrupted” seems to be a an early stage of it.

I am confused about the other dragons. I realise that there is a chance that they don’t turn creatures into their minions. Tequatl seems to hang out with Zhaitan’s minions a lot.

But I wonder if the Jungle Dragon’s adjective could be “blighted”… as this is the only adjective that has come up in Maguuma (I’ve seen it in conjunction with the jungle worm and inside Twilight Arbor). Somehow I wish the “bloated creepers” were “blighted creepers”.

Secondly, the Deep Sea Dragon. I know that the wildlife on Southsun is probably crazed because the Consortium disturbed it or because of whatever it is that Canach is up to. But COULD “crazed” have anything to do with the Deep Sea Dragon?

My OCD wants all dragons to have an equal share of adjectives that go with them.

Regarding the Jungle and Deep Sea Dragons: What are your thoughts? I am hungry for answers, even if it is only speculation at this point. (I would also appreciate and links to older forum topics, I didn’t find any myself.)

But, I like questionnaires and I believe in statistics, so I took the 1 seconds to answer the questions. Whether or not ANet takes this into consideration in coming upgrades isn’t of top relevance to me, but I’d like to see the results myself, especially mapped against data from earlier events.

Learning from "Crab Toss", some thoughts.

Anyone who has ever played any organized sport ever will tell you that serious problems can arise when players are not divided by experience level. Online games are no different.

I had much the same thought last night. Before last night, Crab Toss made me feel like I was the fat kid running after the ball and never getting a pass before collapsing in the grass and being made fun of by the other kids.

I’ve never been good at team sports / ball games and I’ve never been on a team outside PE, which I think has a lot to do with my low frustration threshold and me being so slow to learn how to go about Crab Toss tactics.

So, in my own life, PE = bad, but playing casual/friendly/no pressure basketball with the other nerdy kids after school = good, and I think this shows why it would have been a good idea to allow players to play with their own friends.
