Human female voice

Is there anyone that likes the human female voice?

I like it. o_o)-b

You know what would be interesting, though? Is if they had something like an autotune slider in character creation. Nothing huge, but something that would adjust the pitch of your character’s voice slightly. I’m not sure how feasible that would be, but it would add an extra element of uniqueness to our characters, I think.

That’d be nice.

In NWN you could pick a voice for your character out of a whole bunch; not just the sound would be different but also the personality (very much so). But in NWN the characters only evr said the generic phrases (in combat and such) and didn’t talk nearly as much as in GW2 (personal stories…). I wouldn’t expect ANet to make various choices available and then change the text, animation and voice acting for each single line based on the player selection, that’d eat up way too many resources. But man, it’d sure be nice. To be honest though, when I started playing and did the “I overcome them with my charm/dignity/ferocity” tpye of thing during character creation, I did really think it would impact the voice acting. But that was before I know how much dialogue there was going to be.

Re: Female Human voise: It’s okay. Not all the voice acting is spot on for my character but I never had that expectation.

Re: Female Norn voice: I don’t mind it one bit; I know many players have a problem with it sounding “too deep” but if you compare it to other Nron voices (Eir Stegalkin?!) it is rather high-pitched by comparison; I think it is already quite a compromise between what a Norn woman “should” sound like and what human players are used to hearing / want to hear.

General - Event Balance issues.

This ^

The Maw is WAY too easy with the ridiculously large player mobs, while the Krait Witch is so hard that people generally don’t even bother.

Yes, we could all post more detailed information on these here, but to be honest I think ANet has all that information anyway; it’d be easy for them to find out through their logs which events attract many players and which events don’t, and how long they take to complete each time. I hope that one day they look at that information and use it to balance the events in terms of difficulty and rewards. (Upping the Maw timer was one baby step into that direction, but a lot more could be done.)

Frozen Maw reset time?

in Dynamic Events

Pixelpumpkin.4608

And I’m gonna step in and say the opposite.

I love the group events in GW. However, before the timer change, since half the server population seemed to sit in Wayfarer Foothills at all times waiting to repeatedly do the Maw, other maps’ group events were abandoned. There is a good deal of maps where I haven’t been able to play through the world events yet. From my point of view, it would be the right decision to scale down the Maw timer and chest reward, to make it less appealing to players, while scaling up the chest rewards (and/or timer) for similar events on other maps to balance it out a bit and add to the appeal of doing something else for a change.

Secondly, I’m not a fan of fixed timers anyway; players shouldn’t know that this or that event will definitely be up within the next five minutes. Events should just happen when they happen and if you happen to be in the vicinity, then great. I’d be happier if the world events happened at a random point in time (within a fixed window, obviously, but with a range making it undeterminable).

There is enough static chests in the world that people can farm for loot; jumping puzzles, etc.

I realise that I may be the only person thinking this way, but predictable, reliable half-hourly maw-farming bores the hell out of me, and sadly when other people do it, it also sort of affects me, see my comment above about abandoned maps. (Not that I generally care what other people do, but clearly the maw created (and still does) a huge imbalance, compared to other world events.)

/2c

TL;DR:
1. Dynamic events should be dynamic.
2. The world events should be balanced out and all be roughly the same level of rewarding, to prevent people from wanting to hog one and disregard all other events.

Yes, the personal quests qill be hard to solo if you get ahead of your own level.

All the tips up there are great ^

  • Best XP: dynamic events (you don’t have to solo them, just announce them in /map chat and others will likely join in)
  • XP without any risk: explore cities. You get XP for vistas, points of interest, …
  • Check out other cities through the pink asura gates, and their own 1-15 maps

If you need somebody to “bodyguard” or support you a little in your own personal story, ask /map. I would jump at the chance to witness other people’s personal stories, as these instances are varied and I am unlikely to have gone through the same on my own characters.

“No weapong swaps” also makes many (most?) upgrades totally useless for engineers. And that’s fine, it’s fine that the different classes are different and facilitate different playing styles. But it also means that you can’t turn around and say “this is not a problem for my so-and-so, so I don’t see why it would be a problem for your engineer”. Err.

Continue Coins: What do I do with them?

Continue coins are “cheaper” than potions and lives from the shops.

I have used plenty of continue coins because 1) apparently I suck more than you do – I died a lot while getting to know the SAB, trying to find secret rooms, etc, and still die on occasion. Well, that’s it, really.

I have to say though that at first I thought that you needed a coin just to get into the SAB in the first place, for your first set of 5 lives, not just to continue. As such I di lots of jumping puzzles and chests during the first few days to keep well stocked-up. Now that I know I only need them to continue beyond the first 5 levels, they don’t seem quite as relevant/valuable anymore, plus I am now better at SAB, plus I am not wasting any more lives getting to the root room or Moto’s Breath, etc. I think you get the idea.

Keeping a nice stock for next time will be a good idea in any case as I don’t know yet whether when the time comes I will have the time to farm for them.

As for the confirmation of friends etc. The followers system was implemented to not have that, if you’re interested in talking to a person in future, you add them to friends and you appear on their followers. There should be a notification that someone has added you to friends also but I don’t think there particularly needs to be a confirmation for it. I see no breach of privacy and no real danger resulting from the system.

Again, I’m hearing of “abuses” of the system but never have I received any good example of this.

Have you not read my example of how the system could be absued (based on how a similar system WAS abused in my own past), only three posts up?

I asked for a REALISTIC abuse of the system. You get no personal information out the friends list, nobody with any sense would post sensitive information in game or on the forums either.

Sorry but I fail to see this as an abuse of the system. Your kind of abuse could easily just start right here on the forums (instead of in the easy to abuse friends system you stated).

Give a realistic example of an actual abuse that puts people in danger.

Note: The only way you’d be a real target would be if your email address, your location, your ip, your password and your account info were all publicly available upon someone finding out your account name (which isn’t exactly likely is it?)

Your whole argument is based on the assumption that the stalking or bullying STARTS in GW2 and can’t bleed into RL, but my own example was that of stalking that started in RL and bled into forums and games. Those forums and games were a welcome and easy to use tool which facilitated the RL stalking if/when it already takes place. You fail to address this in your reply, completely.

This is why I asked whether you had simply not read my example, and somehow I am still asking myself the same question.

I could rant and rave about it, again, but instead I’ll just cut right to the chase: Engineers are not the only ones with summoned weapons.

But I forgot … engineers are special and need special treatment.

Do these other classes use summoned weapons up to 90% of the time? Do these other classes have more than 2 types of weapons available to them usually?

If the answer is “yes” to both these questions, then yes, engineers do deserve special treatment, as the limited weapon range they can use and kits being more than just a gimmick is exactly what defines the playing style of this class.

My main is an engineer, and I use pistols + turrets almost exclusively. I don’t know, I just don’t like the “feel” of kits right now. It does mean that I suck a bit at times.

Even as a pistolera, I am not currently pursuing getting a legendary; I just don’t like the look of it. If it was a cool steampunk gun in what I thought was the general engineer style, I’d probably go for it.

So, while not for me, I would appreciate if there were legendary versions of kits for those who use them; after all, other character classes that have a whole range of weapon skills available to them, automatically also have a range of possible legendaries to choose from.

I think it has been suggested a few times on here and I am absolutely for it. It was suggested that you can talk to a historian NPC and replay old instances that maybe you missed at the time. After all the effort that goes into these instances, it would be a shame to just lose them.

I sort of missed out on the Karka story as I was occupied with other things at the time, but it didn’t take place in instances as far as I remember, so it wouldn’t be re-playable.

World Completion Impossible Now?

Pixelpumpkin.4608

I actually like the fact that you need to get some POIs etc in WvW in order to get map completion, and I wish that some PvP POIs would be required as well. I am saying that as a PVE player who only recently, while pursuing map completion, has discovered that WvW and PvP exist and might even be fun. Well, I know they existed, but I had little incentive to check them out until map completion and jumping puzzle completion motivated me to go.
So I like that they are there, as long as they’re not super-hard to get.

I’m playing on Tarnished Coast, which is green this week, was blue last week a d acouple weeks ago when I popped over for the first time we were red. If I would have payed a little more attention, I would have been able to complete the map very easily.

At first I thought that we were always red, or maybe that their own server would always appear to be red for any player, but it turns out that we rotate, so, great!

Then I thought that this must go for all servers then – that all servers rotate through red-blue-green for all eternity so all you have to do is sit it out of a couple of weeks and then go and pick up your POIs and whatnot on the other side of the map.

In this case, the only POIs you need to worry about would be the ones in Eternal Battlegrounds’ centre keep – 4 POIs, 1 vista and 1 skill challange, and surely it would be a matter of time until you’d be able to sneak in, zerg in, or just log in when your team happens to hold the keep?

Is this not the case? I still don’t know enough about WvW to be sure. Are there servers that just keep their colour? Are the colours randomly distributed each time and you might luck out or not?

I share the OPs concerns about privacy issues, but I do not believe that going “completely invisible” would solve all of the issues.

First of all, I want to be visible to my friends in-game, I want for my guildies to be able to send me whispers, etc. All of these are practical features and I would not want to remove them for myself. I do not, however, want to be visible to people I don’t know, never consented to seeing me in their friend list, or actively blocked. So yes, there should be friend requests.

The other major issue that I have is with the account name being public information. The account name should be between me and ANet. It should not be displayed in game or on these forums. Various websites keep telling me to NOT share my account name with other people and always use my forum alias (for example) for that.

Public account names open the doors to targeted account hacking, googling people’s forum activities outside of the game, etc, and I really don’t see why this is a technical necessity. You might just as well add/report/… people based on their character names rather than account names; as long as ANet knows who’s who (and they do) and keep a track record of former character names after deletion of a character (which they would be able to do easily).

PS: I absolutely agree that privacy concerns need no justification, but for what it’s worth, I had a stalker once in RL who also joined all the forums and games I was active in, and used that information to deduct what times I was home and didn’t have friends over, and then turned up at my door step. He never did enough to legally justify going to the police, but he did enough to let me know that I could never hide from his watchful eye. I don’t think GW should facilitate this. It was unsettling and nerve-wrecking, and if I found myself in the same situation again, I would simply have to quit GW. I realise that this happens to only a small percentage of the player community, and if it has never happend to YOU specifically, then awesome, and all the best to you.

But I do think that ALL players would benefit from better privacy management.

Incidentally, we call normal mode “hard mode” in this household.

At first I didn’t really get the point of baby mode inside a jumping puzzle, but I am really glad now that you can do most achievements in this mode without having to worry about everything else on top of bubble collecting. I’m also glad that you have to go through normal/hard mode to get the chest rewards. I think the balance is just right.

It’s just, sometimes I think about the fact that this is only world 1, and this is going to be “the easy level” as soon as world 2 is released… and then I get scared. A little bit anyway.

According to the tooltip on the pointy stick its range is 150, while the range for the key is 200. Is this correct? Because I find with the key I have to get much closer to enemies to hit them than I do with the stick.

Funny enough, I am also under the impression that the stick has a better range than the key, not worse…

I don’t think ArenaNet intended for delete farming to be a viable way to increase your chances at the rare skins. If they had, they would allow you to run it as many times as you’d like on 1 character without having to delete farm and would not have implemented the “once per character per day” rule.

“Any newly created character has to wait 24 hours, before accessing the SAB.”

Simple. Elegant. Solution.

And modest too.

An “elegant” solution is ordinarily one that addresses the supposed problem without collateral effects. You know that SAB has actually been getting a lot of attention from onlookers, right? There are probably people buying the game just for SAB and your solution would arbitrarily prohibit them from jumping into the content that they explicitly purchased the game for.

The better solution would be to limit the chest not to one per character per day, but one per character SLOT per day.

Alt deleting would do nothing for a player in terms of chest farming, but if a person actually cashed out and got more character slots, then fair enough, take the additional chests.

I believe this would fix and alt deleting problem, SAB or otherwise.

Moto’s Breath

Pixelpumpkin.4608

I’m really sorry about that. I struggled so hard, but was lucky in the end.

My only advice is that out of those first three jumps, one of them required me to hit “jump” first and “forward” a split second after (I think it was the first one), one jump required me to hit “forward” first and then “jump” (must’ve been the second one over the gap) and the last jump was “jump” and “forward” at the same time, I think it was the third jump, from the highest point right in the corner. I hope I didn’t mess the sort order up in my head now. But I used this even distribution to count in my head every time I had to get up and it helped me getting the jumps “right” enough times to eventually get to the top.

Secondly, next time you get to zone 3, run all the way to the checkpoint of that area, try to get moto’s breath/top baubles, and if you manage, you can still go back and get all the other baubles, or you can just quit and try again some other time, without losing all your bauble progress.

The 90 degree corner jumps I have encountered in jumping puzzles so far are different from the almost 180 degree jump around the root, and did nothing to prepare me for it. I do Urmaug’s Secret on a regular basis and don’t struggle with any of the jumps in there, but the root was a different animal altogether. So no, I don’t think that one corner jump is like the next, or that you can use Urmaug’s Secret or any random corner in Tyria to practice the root-jump… otherwise I would have had no problem doing that jump in the first place.

Hi Josh,

first of all kudos on a) making a super super awesome adventure box and b) responding to feedback on here like a boss.

Secondly I wanted to elaborate on the mushroom jump glitch that crazylegsmurphy described above. For me, if I stand straight on a mushroom and just keep bouncing up without doing anything else, every fourth or fifth bounce (I think) it’s like the game skips half a bounce and I start the animation in the wrong place (vertically). If that happens to be the moment you attempt your jump, it will of course screw you over.

The Moto’s Breath tree trunk of hell was so difficult (in reality it took us over two hours to get up) because of the combination of three difficult jumps to even get started, swamp water, glitchy mushroom bouncing and our nerves getting the better of us after a while. With any one of these four factors removed I think it would have been a nicer experience while still being a challenge.

Only my achievement OCD kept me going (and the fact that I really didn’t want to start over with collecting all zone 3 Baubles). I mean, at that point I really felt that the SAB can go die in a fire, and I resolved not to play it anymore for at least a full day, although that wore off really soon so of course I was back in there the next day.

Thank you also for the clarification about corner jumps; I’m a mixed keyboard/mouse player (never thought about it, but when walking around outside I exclusively use keyboard turns, in jumping puzzles I seem to subconsciously switch to mouse camera) and I am not keen on corner jumps at all. But I guess at least now I know what’s coming, so I can use the time we have before world 2 release to practice those bad boys.

By the way, here’s my suggestion for that one; how about putting one of those rooty trees on ground level somewhere in zone 2, so you can use that to practice the corner jumping without losing a life every time? It is world 1 after all (If there is one, I haven’t spotted it, at least not in zone 2.)

Keep up the good work, the SAB is amazing and I love it, no matter how frustrating.

but things like this are just frustrating. Everyone enjoys finding the little loopholes and tricks. It’s a valid part of the game as long as it doesn’t give anyone an advantage over another player or cause imbalance.

“Finding little loopholes” = the definition of exploit.

And of course if gave you an advantage (of one obtainable achievement) over other players and thus caused imbalanced.

I agree that this was an exploit and am happy to see ANet making a statement instead of leaving players in the unclear about whether it is a bannable offence or not.

I also agree with it being a stupid achievement at 100.000 drinks and as many clicks; I shan’t bother with it now.

There’s already logic puzzles in PVE (for Asura hearts, and an additional puzzle) and I am absolutely okay with that.

Guild Wars 2 is the most diverse MMO I’ve ever played and that’s cool. My own journey so far:

- Did a lot of PVE. Hated jumping. Wasn’t interested in PVP. Hated keg brawl.
- Went for map completion. Became interested in WvW.
- Went for achievements. Became intested in (and better at) jumping puzzles.
- Loved jumping puzzles. Did a lot of them.
- Tried PvP for the first time. A lot more fun than expected.
- Went back to keg brawl. Having fun.

I have yet to do PvP and WvW properly, but every time I run out of content (be it map exploration, achievements, jumping puzzles) I find something new. I have yet to complete my personal stories. Then there’s also roleplaying which can add another dimension.

I love GW for being so versatile. Something for everyone; and a lot of things for the easily bored like me.

People say “you can’t have everything”; I never agreed with that.
