I may disagree with rune, but his position is still a valid counter point in this discussion, regardless of its extreme nature (by my standards at least).

For instance, I get on some level the joy Rune may get from seeking out the traits repeatedly as a diversion to the “standard gameplay”. In a way its no different than those people that do and re-do all the JPs and know them like the back of their hands.

The difference here (for me) is that JPs are 100% optional, or rather they should be. So should dungeons. So should map completion. And here is where I felt, along with many others, that the trait system as it stands now has failed. It made many of those things compulsory if you wanted to have an even remotely complete character that could “roll with the vets” that already had toons with all the traits unlocked. It created a divide in the player base and ultimately worked against the very thing Anet was trying to achieve regarding build experimentation.

This is the reason why it is getting fixed. That being said, it is important to hear from people like Rune in this discussion because there may still be aspects of this system that can be salvaged to both allow for meaningful progression at proper levels on the way up to 80. Rune might be in a minority of players, but he isn’t alone.

I just want to make sure that Anet is actually going to engage with us before Traits 3.0 goes live so we can avoid another year long+ quagmire.

I get mad on players who:

  • don’t have enough money to get a proper PC

Ummmm :O

I get a sadistic twist out of pulling people and making them fall down the holes in skyhammer.

I also enjoy salty tears when people moan in practice PvP

I just want to say that I am probably one of the only people that laughs my kitten off when I fall through kitten or get sent flying off the edge on Skyhammer. I find it hilarious.

(Lost track of how many times I accidentally rocket booted off the edge myself)

I cannot tell you how many times I just laughed at someone raging in PvP. I especially like the ones that think they are somehow hurting my feelings by trash talking in PvP. My fave was someone who was on a winning team talking some nonsense, so while they tried to farm the rest of my team near our spawn i skittered around to their Lord. and almost got him down before they wised up and ran back to save him.

In short; ignore the people acting like fools or go out of your way to make them look foolish while in PvP.

1 – Templates like in GW1

8 minutes 44 seconds into this video, BogOtter asks Colin Johanson about this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-dUjV6pa8Y&t=8m44s

Right, soooo, no then.

Moving on. :/

Rune: You said that all you need is 7 traits and the rest are cosmetic. I believe this to be horrendously over simplified and inaccurate for many people.

For a vet player (especially ones that build craft or rely on changing builds as the situations present themselves) they might need anywhere from 7-20 traits unlocked just to have that flexibility or for true build crafters, all of the traits unlocked.

On my Guardian alone I can quickly count off about 18 that i need (might be more). My Engie and thief need almost all of them for the builds i use on them at any given time. I’m sure there are plenty of Elementalists out there that need more than 7.

A warrior i brought up through the trait system recently didn’t have dogged march. An adept level trait. Do you have any idea how upset i was when I saw where I had to go just to get it? This is one of the core traits (IMO) for warriors and I had to go hunt it after getting to level 80. This system is broken and thankfully anet has seen that.

So, Anet: Do we see some info regarding the trait system after PAX? During closed or open beta of HoT?

I get mad on players who:

  • have multiple characters of the same class (not more than one but afte 12+ it really makes me mad)
  • play too often and don’t work
  • don’t have enough money to get a proper PC
  • whose grammar and orthography is extremely bad
  • whose English is substantially bad and aren’t willing to learn even the simplest rules
  • when players show off in forums and in game how good they are or just state it and make themselves shine
  • too young people with manga/anime related stuff
  • bearbows
  • staff guardians
  • ranged only PvE combat

… and a lot more. It’s not every day the same and usually I don’t tell them. Also, people online who stat that staff guardian and the like is good etc. It’s just ridiculous.

I also bought gems for several thousand €.

PookieDaWombat.6209

For the (just basing this on this thread and others like it) VERY FEW that seem to have enjoyed this trait system:

One of you describes having gotten all of the traits (or nearly all of them) by questing for them on your 20+ alts. Aside from having attempted this myself on just 2 alts I honestly can’t imagine what kind of time you have on your hands to map open/wait for and complete event chains/etc. MOST people have lives that leave them maybe an hour or 2 a day to play and even then that might be generous. To say your situation is atypical would be an understatement.

For the other one that I saw mentioning liking it in some way, you even admitted that you had a friend “carry you” through certain areas. That shouldn’t be how the game is played.

Thankfully all of that is moot. At the end of the day enough people have made it very clear that this current trait system is broken and I’m sure there are metrics that correlate to show this as a problem, hence the incoming fix.

To that end, the over all discussion here was more for speculating as to what that fix might be and when we might be seeing it. My hope is that Anet rolls it out before HoT so we can see it and get used to it (and possibly help tweak it if need be) before HoT drops so it doesn’t:

a) affect HoT sales
b) further confuse things for brand new players
c) cause more people that still have yet to experience this system rage after they make their first alt/revanent and relaize all of the nonsense they will have to do to get all the traits.

See, its real easy for us to say “if you make alts you should know what traits are good/work/etc” and you might be right in that you maybe don’t need ALL the traits. This won’t hold true for Revs though. People will want all the traits so they can buildcraft and this system as it stands now does not encourage this. At all. If it stays in place through the launch of HoT it WILL hurt the game and it WILL affect player satisfaction.

I truly hope this is not the case, because that would just make this “precursor crafting 2.0”.

My Guardian bounces back and forth between 2 builds: his tanky heal/support build and his meditation zerk build.

The Med/zerk build is fairly common and selfish in many ways, but deals out insane damage (and I’m not even 100% glass cannon on it), but with the properly timed blocks, aegis, blinds, heals I can keep myself alive in some pretty nasty places while doing a nice chunk of damage. All that being said, if I am on the other tanky build (and fighting around a lot of other people or in a party) I can eat SO MUCH damage while providing boons for days on my party or surrounding people and the damage I do isn’t actually as bad as it could be TBH since i’m suing zerk weapons and my trinkets don’t change from the 2 builds. Only thing that changes is my armor/rune/trait sets and even then not by much.

When are we going to get information about the new-new trait system?

I’m going out on a limb here, but i think the answer (as per history) is “When it is ready”.

Sadly I’m not sure what we will hear and when anymore either. I know that they (Anet) were planning on discussing the new WvW changes at PAX and the other event thing, but as far as I can tell from the info they’ve shared is that even the dev work going into the new class, etc are still being done with what basically looks like the current trait system.

This leads me to believe that either:
a) this new system is not going to be seen for some time (perhaps until after HoT launches)
OR
b) the only change to the system will be how we acquire the traits (which would be fine if they had some ideas to clue us in on the direction) and we might see that before HoT drops.

Still all just speculation however based on info that may or may not be related to the topic at hand.

Can we please get the temples that require traits on a timer or something? The temples I need for traits are never contested. I hate to be forced to buy them since these yellow traits are the priciest.

IIRC, it was changed so that the defense event for the temples also grants the trait.

This is true, but those events are still a big problem for many people when getting those traits under this current system. :/

Expansion HoT general request for anet

PookieDaWombat.6209

While i get what you’re saying regarding the lack of skins/weapons earned through actual gameplay (which has been sorely lacking as well as noted many times on these boards), the idea that you paid gems for things hoping an xpac was free was a touch foolish. Technically you were paying for the Anet team to build an xpac during that time if anything. Getting to play it would still require purchase however.

Now things that can still be up for debate would be if Anet, say, tried charging a full 50-60 dollars for this xpac. I think (personally) that for what they’ve shown that this price point would fall a bit on the silly side, but once again that would be a debateable topic in these forums and elsewhere.

As for the GvG stuff, there seems to be an even 50/50 split on that front so once again, debateable but to say outright that its not true GvG is more opinion than fact.

The’ve yet to talk about the WvW update so we can’t speak to that.

At the end of the day though you can always choose to speak with your wallet by not buying gems as I have since April of 2014 if you’d like while debating the things you see coming and what you might like to see done differently. It might not amount to much or maybe enough people will join in your chorus. Who knows.

Things that Can Make This a True Expansion:

  • New classes (check)
Specializations are new classes in a way as they will have new skills and playstyles. Also, Revs.
  • New Weapons (sorta)
Specs offer new weapons for their specs/classes and there will be new legendaries, but thats it.
  • New Race(s) (nope)
So far no word on new playable races which I think was a BIG missed opportunity for Anet. Big.
  • New Maps (sorta)
I get the whole vertical biomes thing, but its not the same as a slew of new maps across Tyria which frankly you have the space for so this is a huge miss for me.
  • New story (begrudging check)
Its a new story, technically, but its really just the same story with a different dragon. Its new though, so…yeah.
  • One to Two Free Character Slots (unknown)
Anet, you’ve not said if this would be a part of this xpac so I’m hoping this is just a slight omission, but please don’t try to shop this to people without this feature.

And while I understand that getting Guild Halls into the game early on was difficult/not possible for launch, i still feel putting them behind the xpac is a bit hinky. I can accept the idea that guild leaders will need to buy the xpac to unlock it, but if you also require players to have the xpac to get into them, this will be very bad. Very bad. I’m also not happy about the legendary crafting being only available to people who buy the xpac as well, because that one is even more of a heinous transgression IMO.

The above is a bit of my personal feelings/thoughts/ideas regarding the xpac at the moment and what I’d like to have seen (or what we will see) with the expansion. Just some more food for thought as you get your questions together as well.

Anet, not sure if this has been suggested or not, and if it has, apologies for the repeat, but…

Since LS season 2 is so integral to the plot of the xpac is it in your plan to also package unlocks for the entirety of LS season 2 for newcomers to the game so they don’t have to pay additional gems/money to “get on the same page” with the rest of the people that have been playing this game through the free updates?

If so, are you going to also wrap that cost up into the xpac or offer it for free as part of the xpac?

i ask because if the cost is going to be wrapped up into the xpac, it might be good to get ahead of that horse as people who have played (and gotten it for free) probably won’t enjoy getting charged for it, and as i stated those that are completely new might want to see the road that got them there should they get into the game now.

we’re not just their customers, we are practically the ones paying their bills.
they better listed or we’ll pull and guess what that means.

As much as I think we could do some potential “damage” to their bottom line, i think they will see a far bigger spike in revenue from the xpac for any loss due to traits possibly not being fixed that it will go unnoticed at first. Now, what might hurt them is this or a poorly implemented new system for any new players that cannot buy their Rev’s way to full stats with scrolls, etc. This is one of the reasons I really want to see the new trait system before HoT drops, so we can hopefully weigh in on it and help tweak something the devs might have missed. This is why I want an actual dialog WITH Anet about this before it goes to live so we can help steer it in some way. Right now though, all we are doing is talking at a wall.

I really want the game to continue to be successful, and i really want HoT to be successful. What i don’t want is the trait problem that’s been lingering now since April to mar what could be a new awesome experience.

Nobody said our feedback was heard. The did, however say that we are super cool for posting feedback.

As far as Anet is involved, they only react to their precious matrices. They made a deal with that guy/company that basically nullified (in their minds) the need to communicate with players at all because now they have nice spreadsheets that tell them everything they need to know.

That is why I don’t care for HoT right now and certainly not planing to buy it when it’s released because we are going to have the same attitude, but with extra humidity. Maybe when they start treating their players as valued customers

Its pretty evident in some of the way Masteries are going to work that they listened to a good chunk of the feedback we gave in the old Traits thread and they more or less stated that our feedback did inform the team as they worked on aspects of the xpac and to that end whatever Traits 3.0 will be.

Problem is they are lacking in details about Traits 3.0 which is what we really want in this thread so we can offer feedback on THAT before it goes live.

I believe that ANet stated the mastery system is a post-80 progression system, and that traits 3.0 would be a pre-80 progression system. This implies that leveling a character to 80 should unlock all traits. If that’s not the case, then it ought to be.

do you remember where you might have seen/heard the part about it being a pre-80 system? I honestly don’t remember seeing or hearing that from Anet. Just that they were working on a new system to replace the one on live.

Which i’d just like to point out when they mentioned it, made it seem like it was far more imminent than it has turned out to be.

they did ones say that they are planning on releasing the core systems before HoT, this includes specialization and masteries.

How, exactly are they releasing mastery system before HoT as you can only DO those if you’ve bought HoT?

No, Masteries and Specializations will be dropped with HoT as they are core feature OF the xpac.

The bigger problem here is that there is no real substantial Trait system in place for release before HoT either because if there WERE then they could talk about it (as per their communications policy), so following the logic, if they’ve not spoken about it then it cannot exist in a form solid enough for release either.

Soooooo, basically looks like game dev on the new content (specifically the new class and for that matter most like the specializations) is all being done with what looks like the current trait system.

So, this means that:

a) the new “simpler” system isn’t actually going to be very different in use, but perhaps in obtaining them which begs the question “why is it not out yet”?
b) there is no plan to get this new trait system (which they said they’ve been working on for some time now) done and ready before HoT drops

Note, this is speculation based in part on today’s POI.

Yeah…I’m really seeing no reason to even try the beta at this point.

Keep in mind the new system may not be 100% complete, thus cant be used on their internal environment yet, which is probably where the game video we’ve been seeing has been recorded.

That’s kinda my point here. Once again, they went to the trouble of saying something is coming (again, even though already knew that from a post ages ago in the original trait thread), but nothing is ACTUALLY ready and probably won’t be until after launch of HoT, which for me, is utter nonsense.

So, I was thinking how Jalis and Mal are the ones previewed for us, but i was having a small brainstorm with the wife and we were thinking of some other possible heroes that could show up and some of their mechanics.

For instance, maybe one of them could be Alesia, and one of her utilities could be a targeted heal that has an 80% chance to heal a nearby ranger instead of your target. Another one would be Mhenlo where there was a 30% chance to charm a female enemy, but it came with a 60% chance of also triggering Cyn’s Wrath by dropping a meteor shower on the target. My favorite one was Reyna which would have a skill called “Good Times” in which should couldn’t drop below 1 hp while active and any heal cast on her at the time would bring her to full health.

Another might be Zho being able to call forth a herd or running black moa to trample foes.

Any other fun ideas?

Wild Guess about up coming info...

The next news update (about HoT) and the corresponding episode of POI are going to be about Specializations and we are going to be told excitedly about the new Druid spec and how they will get to use a staff at range, and how these new skills can be acquired, and then we might get to see a skill bar of a necro holding a greatsword, but will only get to speculate on those skills from the icons in the pics, then the POI episode will show the Druid in action.

*Might get a tease with regard to mechanics and names for the Engie and Mez specializations, but that is more wishful thinking on my part.

Tiffany and a few others already said it best. This is a silly idea born from lack of knowledge of the game type.

Taunts come to gw2

My opinion is that there are so very few FX that make you lose control of your character. Also, stun breaks are ubiquitous and have such short CD’s that they’re always available. Since I so love losing control of my character in games, and since it happens so little already, you can imagine how thrilled I am at the described functionality of this mechanic.

I take it you’ve not been on the “joyful” end of a “stunlocking-monkey fear train” in WvW where your stun-breakers are rendered near useless as you get exploded to nothing.

Adding the addition of taunt in there is going to make those fights even more “fun” for those on the receiving end.

Because having them in the wallet doesn’t take up space in your inventory making you have to buy more bag slots and bank slots.

They might get them in the wallet sometime in the future, but i don’t think there is a critical enough mass of annoyed players for it to be worth their while sad to say.

Traits Part 2

PookieDaWombat.6209

From Dictionary.com

Usually Disparaging and Offensive. a term used to refer to a person who limps or is lame.

So offensive term.

The problem you describe seems to have more to do with power leveling a new character to max through ways that didn’t let you either encounter the unlock missions as you play or naturally accrue SP and gold for that character. I believe the new trait system was only examined in terms of normal play and leveling, not rapid alt creation.

I leveled my ‘NPE ele’ without resorting to power leveling. When she hit 80, she had unlocked 11 traits and had 23 skill points. I chronicled her adventures attempting to unlock traits in the old traits thread. It is an epic tale and would make a great movie.

Yeah a few of us made NPE toons to get as close to the “full leveling experience” as possible. i even took all my gold and about 90% of my level 1-5 mats and put them in a second guild bank just to keep it out of my hands while leveling.

It was fairly unpleasant and i literally lucked into a build that works well, but that necro has ZERO build flexibility. Sure I’m still map opening with her, but I’ve not gotten many new traits since she hit level 80. maybe 2 at most.

In either case, the new “simpler” trait system is coming…at some point…

Still no idea when. Or what it will look like. Or if we will see it in live with enough time to help steer it. Or if they even plan on telling us more about IT as opposed to repackaging the info we already know about the xpac as “deep dives”.

Yeah, don’t think that one has gone unnoticed.

At the end of the day all we know is the same thing they told us MONTHS ago. There is a new system in the works that they can’t talk about yet, nor give us an ETA on it seems. Only now, since suggestions were becoming redundant in the old thread we have this new shiny thread to speculate on the new system that we knew was coming months ago in the first place. So, yay.

Sounds like its going to be utterly godawful in pvp-land. Glad I don’t have any investment in pvp.

Especially if you need to buy an expansion in order to have access to those new boons and conditions.

Foof. I hadn’t even thought of that yet. You’re right.

Well, since precursor crafting will be a mastery thing only available to people who buy the xpac i don’t see what would motivate Anet to open any of the new conditions/buffs to the older classes either. The older classes have stun breakers and they can be given boons, so there is no reason for anet to make it available to any class that isn’t new/specialization.

Telling them to GTFO has a much better chance of success.

And telling them to GTFO will also drive away a another potential WvW ally. Glad my server people actually heled me with map complete and got me to enjoy the experience enough that I became an avid WvW player instead of just another annoyed and dumped on player by some “elite” few.

Let me guess, you’re also the type to jump servers just to try to be on a winning team?

News flash to the dude losing his mind regarding “mentioning” that this is a place to farm for this particular set of mats: Anet already told the population of their game this info when they introduced a new weapon into the game some time ago by way of a story/riddle here in the forums. Its really not a secret and I doubt anet will be nerf it since they are they ones that brought light to it even being a thing.

Traits Part 2

Trait Speculation: *(Note still solely based on info regarding Mastery System as no info regarding Specializations or Skill progression has been released yet)

Traits System Release Time frame:
Options here are either
a) With the xpac (as part of it) which I don’t think Anet would actually do. Its just not practical and would 86 their game.
b) With the xpac (as in same launch date) which Anet has been known to do, but wold IMO be very ill advised. Too many new variables that a revamped trait system at that same time would be a nightmare
c) After xpac drops. Another horrible idea IMO as it means dragging a bad trait system into a new set of toons that many may try to make and be left with a bad taste in their mouths.
d) Before the xpac, and hopefully long enough before for both bugs to be worked out and feedback to be taken seriously AT THE TIME feedback is made and make any pertinent fixes before HoT drops.

What will the Trait System be?
My speculation is that it will be similar to other systems that we know, like the WvW tracks, etc. We get a set number of points that we can put into various levels of trait lines that offer up specific effects. This might drastically alter builds as we know them, but it might also afford us the granular control so many of us seem to crave.
Other speculations is that just like the WvW ranks, it will be account bound, but unlike them easily refundable.
Acquisition is still a question, but I’d hope that the points can be earned from a wide range of events and maps allowing players to play as they want and still get the traits they most want or all of them with enough gameplay.

Well, anyone that has followed anything I’ve posted lately will know all of the things that are not sitting right with me from Anet.

That being said, I really like a few rounds of Dragon Ball at the end of the day. Sometimes I want to do something kind of mindless and fun and this has it in spades win or lose. Its like a violent snowball fight with some quasi-fps feels to it. Its a fun distraction in and of itself. Same with things like Sprint. Its a diversion from the usual. I can’t fault it. I can fault all the other nonsense around it, but not the mini-game itself.

I have yet to see this cooperation happen.

My experience has been that for solo adventurers this map seem impossible and even normal party sizes that could manage Orr somewhat consistently are simply eradicated.

Thanks for the guide, gona study this some more.
So far though this seems basically like a constant playground for “The Zerg”.
The gameplay style which was the reason for me leaving.

The wife and I were out there for 3 separate cycles of the map and we successfully got to and beat the Vinewraith all 3 times.

I really don’t know what times you play or might be on this map, but I rarely ever see it empty to the point of things failing much. Its a fairly good zone to farm in just by doing the events and it actually has enemies that you have to be mindful of instead of just spamming 1 to eventually kill them. Of all the areas in Tyria I have some of the most fun in this one

Word of advice: Mordrem can hurt when they gang up on you. If you find you have more than 3 focusing you, get out of that spot because they will tear you up.

Traits Part 2

They really need to tell us their plan, and I really hope this revamp comes into play BEFORE the expansion hits. I’d rather not pay money on the expansion if I don’t know if it’s actually going to FIX the traits properly.

It’s likely coming WITH the expansion, but not IN the expansion. Would be too confusing and detrimental to the playerbase to retain 2 different trait systems at once.

And this right there is a big problem. Plainly put, Anet cannot (as evidenced by history) make large changes and updates to the game like this expansion along with changing core functions of the game without horribly breaking something.

After 10+ months this trait update cannot afford to leave the gates hobbled in any way and for the sake of expansion sales it cannot drop along with the expansion. I know i cannot and will not give Anet any money for an expansion with this current trait system in place. I wasn’t kidding on the original thread when I described it as a game breaking problem.

Launching the trait fix with HoT or after it would be horrible and whatever influx of new players that might jump on board that train (most likely to make Revs or Druids) will drop off fairly fast once the trait system in live comes to bear.

Anet wouldn’t want a sub model. They’d make less money that way. Short term profit from whales on a cycle earn them more money than longer term investment through subscriptions.
