Did they specifically state free back then? You’re making the assumption that anything outside of the game CD that you bought must be free. The precursor scavenger hunt was postponed because of the wardrobe and collections.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Is-precursor-crafting-going-to-happen-or-not/first#post2981770

Both a link to the original mention and the follow up from Colin. it was supposed to be a QoL update in 2013 that was delayed, not not because of the the collections or the wardrobe, but because they were having problems implementing it at the time, and that was fine, BUT they continued to talk about it as a QoL/free update if and when they did talk about it and never once said it was going to be delayed until a potential xpac release. So yes, the linked post and the MANY others you can Google for from people asking time and time again for a status update on this feature establish that it was in fact meant to be a free update to the game that is now only available with the paid expansion.

And as I’ve said at least 3 times now: If they just said up front that it would now only be available come an xpac instead of silently stringing people along I wouldn’t have any issue with it, but that is not the case. And since this topic is, in fact, about the precursor crafting they talked about back in 2013, then these posts are very much on topic.

Good to know people without the xpac get to continue having fun with the RNG.

slowclap****

Just as you won’t have access to any of the other new skins/maps/skills, etc introduced in the expansion. Why do people keep thinking they should be given expansion content for not buying the expansion?

“Expansion content” that was originally dangled in front of the player base back in 2013 as a QoL update that was put on hold and is now being packaged with the xpac. Sorry, but this was a feature that Anet shopped to people a while back as a free update to the game and now people will need to pay to get it.

Excuse me if i think that is just a touch on the greedy, disingenuous side of things. It would have been fine if they stated back then that they were shelving it and that it might only be available with an xpac. Instead they strung people along every time it was brought up in the forums.

Isn’t it greedy on the players side to assume that everything outside what was originally included on the game CD has to be free?

Did you miss the part about how Anet first talked about the feature as a free QoL feature to the game back in 2013? Did you miss the part about them stringing along the player base before just going silent about it? Or how it would have been fine if they just admitted back then that they were not going to offer it as a QoL update anymore?

I’ve been forcing myself to play the game lately. Trying to find anything in it that will hold me for an hour or so.

When I’m done i usually feel less like I did something fun and more like I was going through the motions to pass some time before going to bed.

In a way its saved me a chunk of change this past year, but wow has it ever killed my enjoyment.

With the right combo of boon duration and timing of retreat and standing in the staff 3 pulses, you can easily get 1.5 minutes of speed boost that is fairly easy to keep up almost full time even with fighting going on. Just takes practice.

I’ve had the pleasure of getting getting my rear handed to me by a melee only ranger who was VERY tanky (and very goods and what he/she did). It was an actual pleasure to go down to this player because of how well they played (not trying to be funny here).

My point here is that any class can be tanky or glassy in this game and can excel at range or close up if you know what you’re doing.

Also, one of my glass builds for my Guardian is a scepter/torch and sword/focus set up, and another is a GS and staff build that i can flip on the fly to my tankier set up.

Seriously, experiment with all classes and builds and find the ones that fit your play style the best. Ignore the meta unless you are using it as a starting point in crafting your own builds.

I think it’ll be more like Q3 or Q4. Most likely one week before HoT drops. And we won’t hear anything from the devs till two weeks before HoT drops about the Traits and then no real discussion just when it’s coming.

I agree.

Which saddens me a bit given the messaging we have already received.

I’m going to go out and limb and guess that the beta testers are going to see the EXACT same content that everyone else that has seen the new stuff so far has seen. This is only going to be a stress test on the system.

So now that WvW is completely wrecked, is there ANY chance of hearing something about the Trait update? Anything at all?

I have I think 2 more logins before I hit the final free gift for the cycle. After that, I’m probably going to just stop logging in. People were warning long before this went live how much the FOV thing would break WvW and it seemed to fall on deaf ears.

We get it. There is no reason to discuss anything.

While I definitely like the QoL stuff dropped with this latest patch regarding the camera and FPV finally being added (buggy as it might be at the moment), or the ability to now survive running down a flight a stairs, or a hill, I can’t help but wonder why I’m not as excited as I might have been otherwise.

Oh wait.

I remember now.

I share my sentiments in this fashion for a valid reason other than to seem snarky. I’m genuinely this upset about the lack of noticable movement on this to the point that even things I have been wanting for a long time in this game being made available to me isn’t enough to get me excited about the game.

Furthermore, just from some of the comments I’ve seen already (and a failed attempt to even DL the patch by my wife), I am more worried than ever about how Anet has rolled out this patch, and by extension what they will do for the Traits revamp. If this patch wasn’t honestly ready for prime time, then someone should have gone into that thread and said, “hey we hear you but we are still working out some problems”, or if Anet really thought it was ready, they should have warned more people to be mindful of the patch size or even that some bugs were still persisting and being looked at. This all boils back down to communicating with us.

So fine.

I’ll be over there…waiting…

Its been a year though (more or less), and I don’t really think I can wait much longer. Maybe I’ll see HoT. But the chances aren’t likely at this point.

Status update would be very nice, people are expecting it tomorrow so even if you just said ‘no, not tomorrow’ it would be better than silence :x

Better than silence.

You must be new to these here boards. Silence is the norm on these kinds of things. Its in their policy even.

Nope I’m not new at all l o l

I know how arenanet is with this type of thing, and its irritating, I said it would be better if they could at least say ‘yes’ or ‘no’, not that I expected we’d hear either of those things or any response

As this thread proves, some folks harp on their every word, looking for anything to crucify them with… and they’ll make up crap when they can’t find anything.

So we can’t have nice things. Most kiddos that play don’t understand nor are they forgiving of any extenuating circumstances that arise.

As a result, silence is the best course. When and if there is something to be said, it’ll be said. It’s coming. Be patient.

Here’s the kicker.

Its not as if people on the forums are working with a blank slate. There is a certain history, an establisted MO, that goes a bit beyond just “staying silent”.

Anet went silent on the precursor crafting. Like deafeningly silent. When pressed, they went MORE silent until one day finally admitting that they ran into issues, but they were still looking into implementing it in someway and that they’d update us once they had more info.

After that, someone would ask “any more info on this” and instead of saying, well anything, even if it was “nope still churning on this and some other things, but its still on our radar”, we were met with MORE silence. Which just added to more annoyance.

THEN the announcement of HoT came out and after a series of interviews we come to find out that precursor crafting WILL be in the game finally, but only if you buy the xpac. So the QoL addition was moved into being a paid addition.

Now, not saying they are sticking anything about this latest patch update behind HoT. That would be silly. Just saying that Anet has a long history of not saying anything until its live and seems allergic to any kind of discourse with their playerbase even in the form of a “heads up, coming soon. Just have a few more things to work out and we hope to get it live by -insert date here- but if anything changes we will let you know”.

Imagine you went to a restaurant, ordered food, and after 30 minutes asked your waiter where your food was and instead of them going to fin out an ETA said, “it’ll be ready when its ready”. I’m sure you’d go there again. Right?

If there is one thing I’ve learned from my dealings with Anet over on the Trait thread(s) is that they will only tell us something when they pretty much go live with it. Anything else is either a vaguely worded “updates” or a well crafted PR blurb meant to sound like info, but when looked at for more than 2 seconds can be seen as the same info they’ve already given reworded so as to sound new.

In short, keep an eye on the section where they talk about update details because that will be the only warning/info you will get. :/

I liked a lot of what I saw…until the end. I get where Anet was trying to go with that Oasis event. I do. And on servers that that have equal enough populations that play during the same hours, it can be interesting.

Problem is that isn’t the reality in WvW for any servers. Problem is that there is a greater chance that a havok group on a not so populated server will meet a much large force during peak hours that will simply roll them, get the cannon and immediately take what few structures the other team has. Problem is that servers that have their numbers fighting in the off hours of other servers can use this to take objectives faster and hold them for longer in those off hours further shining the spotlight on the coverage/playtime/PPT issue.

I just don’t see this cannon as a good thing for WvW except for possibly the top 2-3 servers in WvW. In bronze it will be an absolute nightmare.

My charr do not have spikes on their shoulders. They are supposed to walk upright.

“Bonwor Fierceblade is a childhood friend and loyal member of Pyre Fierceshot’s warband. Like Pyre, he is hateful of the shaman caste.” Bonwor and Pyre were not flame legion slaves… At least they were truly kitten charr, unlike these weaklings we have now.

Traits Part 2

How hard is it for a freaking dev to go and fix that stupid bugged quest about Devourer Queen. Always Sentinel Whiptail freaking stuck and not moving in that map. Better still if you’re too lazy to fix this crap, why not move this trait to some other event that actually works. This event has been brought up before and you’ve jack kitten about it.

But haven’t you heard? They ARE doing something about it…eventually. We just need to speculate and guess what that something might be.

I’m speculating (from all of the interviews that the likes of WP, and MattV and Angry Joe have done) that the devs all have their heads down in the final push of HoT and until that’s in the bag, we aren’t going to see any movement on other things (including the trait revamp). That means new players or old ones trying to make a Rev are going to be treated to this trait system as it stands now.

I mean sure, vet players will just know to unlock the most useful traits for Revane…oh wait, no they won’t know which ones those are.

I guess they’ll just experience the joy of re-opening the maps and doing WvW, and mini-dungeons, etc to unlock all the traits so they could learn how to play their new class best.

Won’t be a problem at all for them. In fact it might even be easier for all of the ones that are planning on using scrolls to hit level 80 immediately.

If you only play WvW and are entirely satisfied with the professions and playstyles you currently have then there is very little reason to get HoT.

Except those with HoT will be able to use their specializations and new class IN WvW and on those new WvW maps which will be easier to play on if you have the xpac as those maps will incorporate things that can only be used with masteries, which you can only get by getting the xpac.

So there’s that.

Essentially those with the xpac WILL have an advantage on those new WvW maps over those that don’t.

Specializations and Revenant are to be balanced with the existing stuff. If you are satisfied with the current professions and playstyles there is no reason to care much about specializations.
If specializations are better across the board then arenanet messed up.

Same really goes for masteries. arenanet said they want big fights, that’s what they think wvw is all about. Forcing masteries to get around effectively will seriously hinder that when half your zerg cannot keep up cause they lack the required mastery to do so.

So unless you got a source where arenanet stated that masteries will play a part in wvw, and not having them puts you at a significant disadvantage, I’m not convinced.

Check out the interview Angry Joe did with Colin. In it Colin gets asked about the WvW stuff and Colin points out that while the new maps will be available to everyone, only people with the xpac will get to take “full advantage” of the maps, which means things like gliding, etc will most likely come into play, hence masteries will affect game play there.

@Tach: No, they are more like tigers with wider shoulders and longer front limbs. Just from the pics you posted you can see the major difference in spine curvature.

Character Slot for Heart of Thorns? [Merged]

So Anet has in front of them a binary decision: Yes or No.

IMO, only one of those answers is a sound business decision, and frankly there isn’t much room for debate when looked at objectively.

If the answer is No new slot with xpac, what Anet is basically telling their player base is that after having us wait as long as we have for an xpac and no doubt using up the available slots for alts that we’ve most likely gotten up to level 80, outfitted with armor and weapons for their levels and probably dropped some serious gold on them, that if we wanted to play this new class they are hyping so hard that we will also have to dish out for a new slot or delete a toon.

If Anet thought people raged at the commander tag issue, then they REALLY don’t want to see what kind of chilling affect they will have by not supplying a slot with the xpac.

If the answer is yes however, you will probably see a greater willingness and even drive for people to want to get into the xpac and it will honestly cost Anet nothing to offer that feature. In fact it will only earn them more money in the long run because it ensures people making more of an effort to get their foot in that door. It will literally have the complete opposite affect of not giving a new slot.

So, the bigger question I have for Anet is, why haven’t you guys made this decision yet? It clearly doesn’t behoove you not to supply a new slot with the xpac and can only help its adoption. It costs you nothing as alt-aholics may still continue buying slots and hesitant players won’t feel like they have to delete a toon just to play new content. its honestly a no brainer that will win you tons more brownie points with your player base.

And don’t tell me you will release only 1 map and 1 profession in expansion? hh gg

Who said anything about there being only one map?

Well, uhm…Anet actually.

Maguuma.

Might have different levels/biomes whatever they are calling it, but they never said they were opening up more than the Maguuma area.

So, when the NPE first came out there were some serious issues with gating and how it affected Vet players.

Once those were fixed I didn’t have any issues with the NPE. Granted, I couldn’t actually experience it AS a new player. Then they did the “free weekend” thing and I made another account specifically to get a feel for how someone coming into the game saw it with none of the perks I’d had on my main account. (Granted, I still had knowledge of the game that new players didn’t have, but I tried to experience it as best as I could as a new player.)

The NPE wasn’t that bad. Sure it felt kind of hand-holdy but that is the point of it. Did I feel it taught the things it set out to teach new players? no, not really. It tries, but its not quite there yet. Should there be a toggle for people that don’t want any part of it? Sure. Leveling from 1-10 though, even if brand new to the game, really shouldn’t take very long though. There needs to be some better direction on maps like Queensdale that have that odd 7-9 level jump in there on two opposite sides of the map, but that is something that can be tweaked. Overall the NPE is not that bad. I’d say its about 65-70% good, 20% meh either way, and 10% needs work.

Traits Part 2

Anet: Is there literally NO more info that can be shared with us about ANY of this?

Possible time table?
Issues you’ve run into?
Statement akin to “We really wanted to have this out already but can’t at the moment because of last minute HoT dev work and this latest patch eating up our time”?

Can we get some candor here? page 10 and just a lot of preaching to the choir in here again with a few dissenting voices from very hopeful people or some that have tons of time on their hands to enjoy this system in its current state.

This month will literally be half done this weekend and that means we will be half a month away from the anniversary of this trait system with almost no info of substance from Anet regarding its fix.

It’s quite impressive how many performance related topics have been opened since the announcement of HoT with absolutely 0 responses or any kind of info/news from the devs. I knew their PR is nonexistent at best but even so….impressive.

If you look at the history of GW thy have always made a product that could run on both high and not so high end machines. i don’t think there will be any changes made to the code to optimize it for beefier machines.

I rather have faith they won’t screw it up. Why so much faith, you might ask? Well, because if they do screw it up again . . .

Do you really think the game will last for a fourth birthday?

This right here.

This right here is the main reason why I do insist on bumping this thread and trying to engage with the brick wall which is Anet on this topic. Based solely on how they’ve handled other changes and updates (basically working with the info available to me) I can’t fully trust that they won’t do something completely wacky with the trait system. Sure it could be awesome, but it could also fall hard and at a very crucial time. I honestly don’t want to see that happen because I do love this game as much as I do.

If there hadn’t already been a history of things not going quite right due to misconstrued ideas from both sides die to lack of open communication I doubt any of us would be this worried, but history hasn’t born that out.

So, now i will ask again of Anet:
Will we at least get a chance to see/hear/dialog about the upcoming trait changes before they go live and will that happen before or after HoT?

If its after HoT release and the reasons are understandable/justifiable then at least say so. If there are technical limitations that are slowing things down, then say so. Talk to us and at least let us know these things. Stop operating in a vacuum. I get that people have their heads down to meet the xpac deadlines, and if that is the reason as well, just say so. Just stop being silent on this already.

A – You can’t talk about anything in development, and your fixes are currently in development.

2 – A lot of the posts are convinced you broke it intentionally, or convinced you’re just plain incompetent.

iii – Few people involved think you’re capable of fixing it without their input, and will tell you how to do it. (Or you’re an idiot.)

For “A” that was once again due to their (Anet’s) inability to effectively communicate and when put behind the 8-ball on another topic (precursor crafting/questing) instead of owning up and engaging with the player base they opted to just clam up until there were too many posts about it to ignore, then all they said was “nope, maybe later”. That turned into, “Its here now! Just gotta pay for it!”

For “2”, this was also born from the impressions drawn from not actually opening a dialog with the player base and just assuming they could draw conclusions about what the players might want from something like the CDI’s, which I can argue they missed the boat horribly on with regard to Traits. It isn’t the only thing either, but its the one that’s most pertinent to this thread. Essentially their non-communication stance once again leading to this perception.

For “iii”, it would go a LONG way to dealing with those people if they could effectively communicate the reasons for specific design decisions or paths they are working on. Once again the silence on topics where we are looking to actually dialog with them get left untouched until something is in the live environment and those things WILL be looked at a much more critical eye after the fact. Even more-so when there was an opportunity to bounce it off of the player base in some way and discuss the pros and cons and limitations of the system.

Its like this: when asked about guild size, Colin plainly said that the 500 member limit was strictly a limitation of the system. Period. Straight forward explanation that whether you like it or not is both honest and not really up for debate, but at least we know. If, instead, he just said “No, we’re not going to go above 500” and if pressed for why just went silent and never again addressed it, that first answer would fester and make some people rage a bit.

Traits and how they will change, progress, etc is less cut and dry as guild member numbers, but it deserves the same candor and dialog between the players and the devs and that is what we wanted since the start of the first thread. It only got as negative as it has because Anet went completely silent for too long (on a thread THEY made for “discussing the topic with us”) and by not even implementing the SIMPLEST change to the current system that would have appeased most of us (lowering the cost by about half) for trait purchasing.

But it’s a discussion among ourselves while they are watching behind the proverbial one way mirror. Nowhere did they say it was a discussion with them.

Even when they’re around, it’s less a discussion and more target practice against the devs anyway

That would be a bed of their own making.

As others stated, they had a perfectly good thread to open an actual dialog with us and instead went deafeningly silent for months. It appears they are doing the same here.

I know that for me, buying HoT will depend on this in a major way.
Actually, keeping the game installed on my system will depend on this in a major way.

That makes me very sad, but its the truth. Its like they have a really large and gorgeous tower, but one small crack in the foundation can bring it tumbling down if its not handled well.

Dude, I have almost 13K AP and I think I’ve done maybe half the dungeon story modes and even less of them just to do them. I’m just not a fan of running dungeons.

Pretty sure I can make up for that in my WvW and growing PvP and PvE knowledge, but at the same time I couldn’t tell you the best way to deal with Teq since thats something else I’ve not cared to learn.

So yeah, in short, AP means nothing.
