As for the jumping off cliff and pinging back to the top: Necros can already do that, and its hilarious when used in EBG on someone. Make them chase and either they jump off too OR they run to edge, start to /laugh at you, then you ping behind them and fear them off cliff.

Fun times.

Underwater combat

I don’t really hate underwater combat but the underwater weapon skills of thieves are really poor, so I usually avoid it.

That’s ironic. I was thinking that Thieves actually have the best UW weapons of the 8 professions.

While they have some good single target stuff underwater, its all very high risk. The most powerful class underwater are rangers, then engies, then mesmers, then i think Guardians and Warriors are about even, and then necros and thieves.

The most powerful is warrior followed by ranger if we count bugged downedstate.

And wasnt thief the one that could evade in underwater for days by pressing one button? Or they reworked this skill already?

Warrior possibly has the most brute damage underwater, but my guardian can usually nix them real easy. I’ve yet to shutdown a ranger underwater as they have the best damage and pressure, along with a pet that can help raise them from downed usually fast than people can kill them if they even get them down in the first place. Yes, thieves can evade a bunch, but they will melt hard to condi usually and a warriors pure damage output eats them up as well.

Not gonna lie, while I have some fun in underwater combat, certain areas of the game underwater really creep me out (so kudos to the designers for getting that done so well). Its because that it creeps me out that I always feel a sigh of relief when i get to swim to the surface from really deep. There is that one place (Sparkfly maybe) that has that SUPER deep hole with the undead ship. I HATE that area. Even thinking about it now bugs me out.

All that being said, the biggest problem with water combat is the really horrible downed state.

not sure. I’ve at least secured a enough points on my engie now thanks to some focused running through maps (apologies to people I dragged mobs onto) so her skills and traits shouldn’t be an issue to secure fully again. Not looking forward to doing that about 5 more times though. Ironically, my new necro that I was trying to make a concerted effort to earn the traits via events may be set to unlock everything come the change over so she will be in a better place than my other alts.

Trait/skill revamp and wvw

in WvW

Posted by: PookieDaWombat.6209

PookieDaWombat.6209

This issue has been raised in several threads; as I said there:

All 8 of my characters were created shortly after launch (pre-NPE) but about half were leveled almost exclusively in WvW (or EoTM more recently, a couple languished at low levels for years). Their skills were unlocked by additional levels of XP beyond 80 and skill point scrolls.
Due to a lack of PvE/world exploration on those characters, when the new system comes out they will not have enough ‘hero points’ to unlock all of the 5 trait lines + all skills which I have unlocked right now.
Anet needs to provide some extra hero points for grandfathered characters so that players who have earned their unlocks through non-PvE methods aren’t screwed. Make the boost proportional to the % of traits & skills unlocked at expansion release.

While i agree they need to, I’m not 100% convinced they will.

PookieDaWombat.6209

The discussion point was that the new trait system is not alt friendly. If the answer is “don’t do it on all your alts” then that pretty much proves the point, does it not?

I seem to be taking the opposite route to managing all my 90s and upcoming alts:

Get it done now so it’s not a qq later.

We’ve been told what’s coming and how they intend to handle it. It’s still months of development time away. We can not say we’re caught with our pants down on this one.

And while I agree, it also means I will have to take a break from WvW with my engie just to run her all over Tyria to try to get ahead of this horse. AND i’ll have to do the same on all of my other level 80s that have not map opened if I want to continue to play them as is. I think this is the problem I have with this at the moment. That those of us will HAVE to change what we play for the time being just so we aren’t in a bind once the change hits. Furthermore, only those of us actually paying attention right now will do this, but there are FAR more players out there that aren’t and they will get blindsided by this. THOSE are the players Anet needs to be wary of more than anything else.

The rage will be real. As will the fall out.

Phys: My engie leveled up really oddly to be honest. I spent A LOT of time in the 1-30 zones with my engie helping low level/new players with beginning content with her. Basically would run those maps offering help to lowbies with map opens and events and did a lot of crafting with her. Between those things I hit level 80 without even getting halfway through personal story and once she was level 80 i started running her in WvW a lot. She has barely opened most of Tyria so I don’t have a lot of the Sp challenges across the map.

With the introduction of the taunt and if there is proper/judicious use of it in small teams, you will have people who can pull aggro (sorta). problem is and always will be that the game isn’t made (at least not PvE) for overly tanky toons. Not as long as big enemies can one shot you regardless of how tanky/heal-y you are.

I also have no problems getting loot on my ranger in the world. maybe a little harder in WvW, but overall I’ve never felt a severe lack in loot getting.

While infinitely easier for alts to acquire, my problem here is going to be my established level 80s, like my engie, that has been one of my mains in this gamer since the beginning is going to essentially be rolled back and made useless until I’ve run her around PvE to get to the SP challenges. That’s frankly nonsense and there are tons pf people that leveled in WvW and PvP using tomes, etc that are also going to feel this in a bad way.

There is honestly no reason why toons that have full skill unlock currently and full trait unlock current cannot be grandfathered in to the new system far as i can tell. Instead they are going to take things away from players that have invested a lot of time into this game. This is a very bad move.

Scenario:

Bob players WvW pretty exclusively. He also likes making alts. He made 2 alts under the new Trait system from April of last year and somehow got the gold and skill points (possibly through some PvP as well) to level those 2 toons to 80 and get one of them all of the traits and about 90% of the traits on the other one from trainers.

He has done zero map complete and maybe got 3 skill points from running around in WvW.

When the new system hits, since he only got 3 SP challenges done and up to level 80 from both running around and maybe a few tomes, will this mean that he will also only have enough hero points for someone who has done just that (even though he HAD all/most of the traits unlocked)? Furthermore, if that is the case, what about all of that gold he essentially wasted to play toons that he can now, not actually play anymore since his builds are non-existent?

Still no compensation or with Anet make sure to grandfather in anyone who had all the traits unlocked?

What about those toons made at the beginning of the game, but whom the player decided they didn’t want to world complete for the 3rd or 4th time on them and just got them maxed out without getting all the skill challenges in the world? Are they also getting their builds nerfed?

@Kal:

No.

Not a trivial matter regarding gold. The gold cost was one of the major gripes with this new system for over a year.

Fact is there are a good number of people with a ton of alts (that sometimes only played WvW and therefore have little to NO map complete) that may have bought most if not ALL of their traits under this new system, and now from their (Anet’s) wording about the new systems, might very well see those traits go away simply because they will only have enough hero points to spend as they have levels. This means an incomplete character that was once complete and being out a ton of gold that they most likely scraped together in the first place just to have that complete character.

This is no trivial matter and once that reality hits a larger portion of the player base you will see these boards light up with people raging and it won’t be easy to contain, so:

1) Either Anet tries to get ahead of this horse now or,
2) They will have a small nightmare on their hands

Says someone who hasn’t used the system, and therefore doesn’t know whether it’s worthy or not.

It probably isn’t better. Simpler is almost never better, just simpler. But still, wait until you’ve actually used it to proclaim how much worse it is.

Would still like Anet to chime in on gold spent by players on this current system and if we are seeing this new one roled to core before or with HoT.

In the same way that gold spent by players to unlock trait ranks in the old system was not refunded when they made those unlock automatically, gold spent on traits in the current system will not be refunded in the new system.

You don’t need ANet to chime in, that is a fact of life right there.

Except for one small difference: The amount of gold many players spent in the new system FAR outstrips the gold spent prior to that.

Now, that being said, I already know Anet will simply be silent on this front until a larger protion of the player base react to the changes, and that won’t happen until it all goes live. And i agree with you it will be a fact of life. Just wondering if Anet has any kind of plan in place to deal with the inevitable or if they will do as someone else suggested elsewhere and try to handle it as they did with the multiple legendary weapons and the wardrobe issue.

Now…

Are we seeing the new system in place to test with the core system before HoT or do we have to wait until HoT actually drops and learn it all then?

If we are having to wait, do you actually think it wise to pop this new system out a long with an xpac and all of the possible bugs that might go unnoticed?

There are still too many things that seem a bit unclear right now regarding the traits and acquiring them. Specifically how this is less tedious for those of us with alts or those that will make alts. Some further clarification there would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for realizing that you could both tell us information AND include the caveat that its not set in stone yet/things might change and that the world won’t end for uttering those words.

Now that this info has been shared can we start to ACTUALLY dialog WITH the devs around this upcoming change to the system in here to hash out some of those details we have questions about and offer a fruitful back and forth on the subject before it all goes live.

I don’t run my healing warrior in speed runs since I know that isn’t where she’s wanted/needed.

That being said, in WvW she offers up killer support for both healing and mobility and other buffs while doing condi cleanse or substantial area healing (depending on loadout) and puts in enough damage and CC to be both helpful AND get rewarded for being a part of the fight.

Nothing is stopping your healing build from actively fighting to get rewards. Support builds support, but it doesn’t mean they can’t throw a few punches.

Berserker Meta Discussion

PookieDaWombat.6209

Zerker as i know it: Focusing on Power and crit to maximize damage output to kill enemies faster so they have less chance/time to pull off he eventual hay makers that are sometimes barely dodge-able and can usually one shot you regardless of your build/armor/how tanky you are.

Its a flaw in game design which has been brought up to Anet numerous times already. in essence, they completely invalidate tank builds for big world content since the trade off on the tanky builds is less damage and therefore big fights take longer and being that tanky won’t save you from a party wipe if you all miss you dodge or blind or block, etc.

That isn’t to say a tanky guardian that is good at group support and aiding with healing is a bad thing, because they help greatly when keeping newer players on their feet in the open world/boss stuff, and i know my healing warrior kept a good many random players from dropping during LS season 1 whether they realized it or not, but over all those builds are neutered simply through the game’s design.

Once you’ve learned a lot of/most of the PvE content and timings you can usually switch to zerk if you hadn’t early on and just face-roll most of the content in PvE barring a few areas that are generally broken IMO. (I’m looking at you Kol Skullsmasher and your silly amounts of HP and silly hay makers on short cooldown).

New player, is it worth rolling a necro?

I have 2 necros. One can take on most any build since she has all the traits unlocked thanks to having been around since the beginning, but i primarily run her as either wells/marks condi build or a minion master/heal battery build. My other one is a power-crit/siphon build for roaming and generally being a goof.(Mostly since i only have the traits for that build) Also PvP on her a bit.

They are fun to play, but get lots of hate. End of the day, try to play how you want.

Pray they fix the trait system if you like making alts.

I’ve tried playing the game again for my wife. Specifically to help her get T6 mats for her legendary (that even she is on the fence now about wanting to make since her love of the game has been hurt severely by Anet’s design decisions) and its real hard to even do that lately.

Here’s the thing… at this point, I honestly don’t even care about if earning traits has anything to do with what the trait does, or what profession it is, or anything.

The only thing that matters to me is that it’s not ripping me off, and it’s not grindy every single time I want to level up an alt. So my key points are that I want it to be accessible earlier in the leveling process (First point at level 15, ideally), and the cost to unlock all of them should be under 10g. Honestly, the method by which they are obtained is almost irrelevant to me, at this point, as long as it’s not something I have to grind out, over and over again.

Sad but true for me as well in many ways. So basically to add to what you said, they also need to make them account bound once obtained once IMO.

Unfortunately for me I’m not sure that will be enough for me to buy HoT at this point. Its that whole fool me once, fool me twice thing. :/

Horrible luck across the entire game. RNG has never been on my side in GW2.

Thats a horrifying prospect.

If the goal was to make the process MORE grind-y and less fun over all then yeah, make it a bar to fill.

If they’ve been listening though, and I do mean REALLY listening to what we’ve suggested for Trait revamp they’d know that a common theme that we’ve expressed here has been to make obtaining the traits actually meaningful.

make the things we need to do to get them have something to do with the actual traits themselves AND (this is the most important suggestion) make sure they are level appropriate. Add to this a lowered cost for purchasing the traits for those that want to buy them outright and I think most (not all), but most people that have been at these threads would be satisfied.

Am i wrong in any of those 3 key changes being the most wanted from a lot of people in here?

So we have this Tuesday and next Tuesday to hopefully see an actual update to the trait system and 2 more weeks to hear…anything really.

Anet? Still playing this one close to your chest?

Is the world ending after next Tuesday? I’m not sure I understand the limiter here. The way I see it, they’ve got an endless number of Tuesdays stretching out before them.

Oh they do.

I was just “giving” them the out of getting us some kind of info in the month of the day that they set all this nonsense off.

As in, they started this last April, the least they could do is fix it in April or if nothing else ACTUALLY give us real detail about what is to come.
