I have to agree with OP, I for one won’t be playing GW2 for much longer if the Culling/Rendering/Lag issues aren’t sorted out pretty soon. I love WvW and it plays a big part in why I login most days but it is becoming less and less enjoyable.

Same. I do 99.9% WvW. I also will be taking a break if things aren’t improved soon.

The culling is miserable. It’s kind of bizarre that a game released in 2012 has such a low limit of how many characters you are able to see and such a bad algorithm for determining those characters. It’s not like we’re talking hundreds or thousands of people at once….the culling is terrible with a couple dozen people. That’s just sad for a modern game, honestly.

Combined with the lag that seems to be becoming more and more prevalent, I am simply enjoying the game less.

Good thing is, there is no monthly fee, so I can put the game down for a few months and check in at some point to see if it’s gotten better.

These are American servers, which means you write dates the American way, or it’s the wrong way. If you don’t like that, then go play on an EU server, there’s lots of them out there for you.

If people didn’t want them to reset the rating, they shouldn’t have stacked servers so much it threw off the current one. The reset was forced because some servers used the rating of dead ones to rocket up in rating, throwing the whole system off.

Now that 100man guilds can’t move servers on a whim, its the perfect time to let things resort themselves out. If your on a server that is higher than it should be, just play with small 15 man crews. Those are still very viable, just watch that red guard vid lol.

Why would things not have sorted themselves out had they left them alone? Some of the servers were already where they belong.

JQ and SOS are tier 1 servers. They were already in tier 1. What benefit does it serve to have them smash the crap out of a couple of lower tier servers for a few weeks to prove they belong in tier 1 again?

Resetting the ratings makes it so no one is where they belong.

Should have just left it alone and let the servers that were out of place settle down to their correct tier naturally.

Back to my initial point. You aren’t seeing them because the new culling system aggressively culls allied players in favor of enemy players.

You seem, however, to be forgetting the minimap display, which as far as I know does not cull out allied green dots and is by far the easiest way to determine numbers of friendlies in an area.

As a software developer you should know by now that the simple answer is rarely the correct one when it comes to systems like this.

Yes. It is less likely they introduced a bug into a large complex system than it is that people are logging in, standing in place with 50 people around them that have been culled and are assuming the map is empty.

So I thought I’d go into wvw for a look this morning, with a clear head after some sleep in case I was overreacting last night.

Was just in Danelon’s fighting a sizable zerg, with friendlies and enemies fading in and out like strings of xmas lights at night. That’s what it actually looks like.

Since I can’t see the enemy anyway, I imagine I’m fighting ninjas. This helps.

I just imagine I’m fighting ghosts….with ghosts on my side.

Aggressive culling doesn’t explain anything.

Characters on the other side of the map wouldn’t be visible anyways. Culling does not affect them.

If you’re surrounded by 40 people and half are being culled the only way you would duped into thinking there is no else around would be if you stood completely still and never took a step on your toon. As soon as you move 5 feet, a number of the toons around you will be culled, and a number of others will become visible.

The very name (“World vs World vs World”) seems to indicate it’s not really a solo based game.

It’s open world. You make your own way. If you can survive and do well as a small group do that. If you can survive and do well as a solo, do that.

If you try them and cannot survive though, the world is not at fault.

The arrow carts you just need to be able to see a patch of ground and aim at that.

If the cart is inside a tower or keep you can target the door and it’ll hit people on the other side of it.

If the carts are in wierd places, you’ll need to use camera creatively to get a view of what you want to hit. A lot of times they are put in these places because it’s more difficult to AOE them and destroy them.

The current issue with culling isn’t worse. It’s a LOT better.
And I’ll gladly explain to you why:

Previously there was a set number of players that could appear on your screen. This set of numbers included both allies AND enemies; meaning that if you were in a large group of allies, you’d be facing more invisible enemies unless you suddenly moved too far into the enemy zerg. This was annoying as you couldn’t even see the enemy.

What we now have is that there is still a set numbers of players that can be visible on your screen; however enemies and allies now each have a seperate pool. This effectively means that regardless of how many allies are around you, it won’t interfere with how you perceive your enemy (either temp char model, actual char model or invisible during large zergs)

This means that although you won’t see their entire zerg, or your own.. You’ll at least be able to tell you’re running into a group of enemies. Allies can easily be recognized on the minimap; both alive, and dead ones. The only issue right now is; how big is that enemy zerg really?

Yes that is still a significant piece of information. But at least now you’re not running in like a blind chicken anymore. You’ll actually be able to see SOME enemies. Whether or not you’re willing to stay and fight is now fully up to you – Are you willing to risk there being a partially zerg? Or will you try to think something through before running in like a headless chicken?

That’s not what I’m seeing.

What I’m experiencing is a mess. I can’t reliably see the enemy, I can’t reliably see my own side.

While I’m moving people are randomly flickering in and out and I still get run over regularly by large groups of enemies that all just pop up out of nowhere at once.

I feel like I’m playing Ghost Wars where ghosts on both side just keep flickering in and out the whole time.

My current character is a level 80 elementalist. Starting at level 2, I played him almost enitrely in WvW. I got maybe one more level total out side of WvW.

You can man siege weapons. Those don’t care what level you are. Carry supply. Rez. Any knockdowns and such will work regardless of level.

Just because you’re not DPS’ing like a madman doesn’t mean you can’t contribute.

Culling has nothing to do with your computer.

Culling is done on the server, not on your computer. It does not matter if you have a good gaming system, a super computer, a commodore 64 or a monkey with a crayon.

The server knows there’s are 20 people around you. It does not send you information on all 20. It decides which 10 it thinks you need to see and sends you information on those 10 only.

The server decides you need to see players 1-10. It sends your computer information on players 1-10. Your computer renders player 1-10 on your screen.

The server does not send you information on players 11-20. They have been culled. Your computer will not render them, not because it is slow, or the video card is garbage or because your network connections is slow…it will not render them because it does not know about them.

Periodically, the server recalculates which players it thinks you need to see. Since you have moved 15 feet to the north it decides you no longer need to see players 2,4, or 6. It decides you now need to see players 18, 19 and 20.

You no longer receive information on 2, 4, or 6. They have been culled at the server. You computer stops rendering them because it no longer knows about them. It not because your computer is slow your video card is Nvidia…the server has stopped telling your computer about players 2, 4 and 6 so your computer cannot draw them anymore.

The server sends you information on players 18, 19 and 20. Your computer starts rendering them because it now knows about them.

No offense people but most of you complaining about culling are probably playing on some seriously craptastic rigs.

You do realize that your ability to generate and render models is completely relevant to the number of stream processing units in your GPU? If your GPU is a kitten then you should expect having issues rendering 50 or so players instantaneously. Furthermore, as WvW is hosted on a server, your internet connection has to communicate with the server constantly in order for your GPU to accurately render the enemy models and their locations.

In short, if you have a lower end rig and a not so great internet connection, then you need to understand that culling is going to affect you a lot. This is why ANet implemented the low texture placement models; it’s so low end rigs and crappy internet connections can actually put something on the screen in a short amount of time.

Many large scale games suffer from culling issues and most of these issues are spawned from people with lower end rigs. Planetside 2? Yeah.

Way to not understand what culling is.

Good job.

Just as an FYI, the culling is done at the server, not at your computer. You could have super computer, but if hte server only tells you about players A, B, and C, you won’t be rendering X, Y, Z…no matter how fantastic you think your rig is.

I look in at the enemy group. I see 3 people. Could be 3. Could be 6. Could be 20.

I look to the side. I look to the other side. I see 2 allies on the left, 4 on the right.

Could 2. Could be 4. Could be 10. Could be 28.

I run 15 feet. A few people fade in, a few people disappear. I am fighting ghosts. Luckily, I have ghosts on my side as well, although I do not know exactly how many.

At least before I knew what my side looked like.

In other games your graphics would lag in zergy situations. This game opts to make players invisible until your system catches up.

There’s nothing to catch up. The server has simply decided you need to see players A, B, and C, and you don’t need to see players X, Y, and Z. It has not told you about X, Y, or Z, so your computer has nothing to catch up on.

I was running around with a group of 15 to 20 people last night. We all had to waypoint to Bay and stand around for a few mins while people were afk for a few.

I jumped up on the wall and looked down at the group I was with. 2 people were visible. Jump down on top of those two people and the rest start popping up while the few people up on the wall disappeared. I find it very odd (and quite honestly discouraging) that in 2013 a new MMO’s engine can’t handle displaying 20 to 25 people standing around doing nothing.

The fights are much worse than before. Before I was never sure how many people I was actually fighting. Now I’m not sure how many people I’m fighting against or how many people I’m fighting with. It’s like I’m running around in a world filled with ghosts that just flicker in and out every few seconds.

I’d much prefer the old culling system rather than this one. However, the fact that in 2013 a game can’t display more than 30 or 40 people is disheartening.

What’s funny is that most of the servers that are complaining are the same ones that had organized “black outs” so they can get more people onto the server to WvW. Did everyone forget that most of the WvW players took an absence from WvW to go and get their ascended armor or went off to play another game while WvW wasn’t fun? They heard changes were coming, so they came back to try it out.

All I have to say is, you brought this on yourself and now deal with it. The lower tiers are dealing with it (SBI, HoD, ET, etc) with the mass exodus of guilds/players. They are the ones having fun, sitting back having popcorn, and drinking some rum and cokes, laughing their tales off at you guys that are complaining about long queue’s.

Guild’s that thought: “Hey lets go to these top tier servers, it will be more fun, exciting, and have better competition”, you thought wrong. You should have been thinking: “How can we make us as a community/guild better than we are now?” Lower tiers are a lot less zergy, you use more tactics, and the other servers keep you honest. Coming from SBI, I have seen the high tier pain of queue times from the early days to the mass exodus of guilds there. That’s why when we (as a guild) made a decision to move off of SBI (before free transfers were up and WvW points reset were announced), we made the decision to go to a lower tier server like Darkhaven. While SBI will always be called home (because of the community there), we have a new summer home on Darkhaven to WvW on with very little queue times(Friday/Sat night).

Self righteous poster doesn’t even bother to understand the actual issue.

It’s not the fact that there are queues. There are three issues.

1. Map limits are not working correctly. Queues are forming well below the normal cap. Map capacity limits seem erratic and inconsistent. Queues no longer seem to form at the 166 limit, but in many cases at populations far below that (60 to 80 at times).

2. The supposed FIFO queue does not work on a FIFO basis….it seems to work on some lottery ticket system.

3. There is no way to know your approximate wait time. You queue up and have no idea if you are 5th in line or 500th.

Most people would be fine with a queue that formed at the correct time, worked properly and gave some indication of moving up in line.

But your self righteous “you brought it on yourself” post was fun, too. Thanks for contributing to the community.

No "Queue Bug" on Stormbluff Isle

Lately, there has been a lot of talk about the queue queue bug.

I just wanted to bring it to the community’s attention that Stormbluff Isle has, so far, not experienced it. And from what I’ve read in other threads on the topic, neither have other low-population servers (like Eredon Terrace).

The queue queue bug only seems to be affecting bandwa—I mean, high-population servers.

Maybe this is a coincidence? Maybe SBI is just lucky? Either way, I hope Anet gets to the bottom of this as soon as possible!

So the queue issues are only affecting servers with pops high enough to have queues. Servers with no queues are not experiencing issues with their queues. Go figure.

In other news, people who do not own cars are less likely to experience mechanical issues with their car than people who do own cars.

You’re right, it is stupid to suppose that hundreds/thousands of new players transferring to the top servers would massively increase queue times. What was I thinking?

I’m just thankful that Stormbluff Isle isn’t experiencing this “bug”.

The issue is not that everything is working great and people are just unhappy to wait in queues.

There are three issues.

1. Queues are being formed when actual players on the server are below what the cap is supposed to be. ie, if the cap is 166, queues are forming when there are 40 people on the map.

2. The queue is bugged. It is supposed to be a FIFO queue….instead it’s a lottery. You queue up, you have no idea when you will get in. Two people queueing at the same time will see 1 person get in in 30 seconds, and the other still waiting around 60 minutes later. People who queue after you can get in before you. This is not how queues work.

3. There is no indicator of your place in the queue. You queue up, you wait with no idea if it will be 5 mins or 5 hours. Any sort of regularly updated indicator (“You are queued for Eternal Battleground and are 25th in line”) would be appreciated.

All of you going “Derrrr….you’re just mad cause you have to wait” should be quiet since you do not understand the actual reasons for the frustration.

Just a quick note to those accusing people complaining about playing on bandwagon server, take your kitten some place else. There are MANY loyal people who have been on a server since beta who are now subject the atrociously bugged queues. Why must we leave a community we’ve built up from the ground because other people joined the server?

Fix your game ArenaNet, it’s in a bad place right now.

I understand you had nothing to do with the state your server is currently in, but that’s not A-Net’s fault either. It’s the fault of all the bandwagoneers who jumped on your server and screwed it up. Unfortunately the only way to fix this is for either them to leave or you to leave. Good luck convincing all the idiots to leave the server, especially with payed transfers as they are now.

There’s nothing wrong with the game. A-Net can’t fix it if there’s nothing wrong. There IS something wrong with the community though…

2. People have no idea how long they will be waiting. We’re not looking for an exact time. We want to know our position in line. Are we 10th in line? 20th? 800? Is the queue stagnant? Have I been 25th in line for 30 minutes? Is it moving? 10 minutes ago I was 25th, now I’m 15th. In about 15 minutes, I can hopefully be in.

Even if the queue was 2 hours, most people would be much happier if they knew the queue was working correctly, had some idea how long the wait, and had some sort of indication that the queue was actually moving.

The most frustrating part is not having any idea how much longer you need to wait. It could be 5 mins…could be 5 hours.

The lack of counter is absurd. When you queue up it should give you a little box that constantly updates your position in the queue (term used loosely since this is not a real queue).

Ie, you queue up for EB, a little thing pops up in the corner of your screen saying “You are queued up for EB. You are number 75020 in line.”

Then when someone gets in from teh queue, your box is updated. “You are queued up for EB. You are number 75019 in line.”

At least then we could see progress. We could see if people are moving in the queue or if it’s stagant. If I see no movement, I decide that rather than wait 5 hours to get in, I’ll go do something else. If I see 1 person every 1 minute or so moving, I can decide if I want to wait.

It at least gives us some sort of way to approximate what our wait is rather than this endless wait with no end in sight.

Get some friends and go kill the people camping the puzzle.

What do you want me to say? The puzzles are located in WvWvW maps. These maps are setup for groups of players to kill other groups of players. If you want to run around by yourself in them, be prepared to be killed by groups of players.

I waited next to the portal in Lions Arch and spammed F right when reset happened. There was an INSTANT queue. Been waiting in queue for almost 2 hours now.. some people in my guild logged in and got in in 5 min, others have been waiting just as long as me.

Why isn’t there a queue line?

They should stop calling this a queue. It’s not.

Queues are simple and predictable.

This is a lottery system. You try to enter WvW, you get a lottery ticket. You have no idea what the next number called will be, or how long you will need to wait. You simply stand there with your lottery ticket hoping at some point your number is called.

First reset night i didn’t make it in, that kitten filled instantly for EB.
Half our guild got stuck in queue.

Luckily, they don’t tell you what number you are in line so you have no idea how long of a wait you have.

Yes. They are doing it to stop other players from finishing it.

I think the dev intent was for servers to fight over the JP like they fight for other areas on the map.

It’s not a PVP-free zone wthin the PVP map….it’s a place for servers to fight over.

Actually I can make badges faster by jumping than killing…

He is saying we controlled the entire map. No one was coming out to fight so deploying siege was a waste.

I was responding to the part I quoted.

There is no deep meaning to having a higher score than another server.

Can't get 100% map completion

Yeah it is kinda stupid that WvW is required for World Completion (especially that you need all THREE Borderlands! Two of them aren’t technically in your “World” at all, are they?).

No. What’s stupid is PvE is required for 100% map completion. I’ve got 100% of the map in WvW…I don’t know why I need to go to PvE to get 100% completion.

Just because things aren’t 100% complete doesn’t mean I shouldn’t get an award that says “100% completion”, right?

1. Go to the jump puzzle with a group of friends and kill the people trying to kill you.

2. Don’t go into WvW.

Blackgate and 20 other servers have never won in Tier 1 since 1 week matches started. We’re all still fighting. Let’s get some perspective in here. There isn’t an excuse for stopping to play, ever. Sack up and get out there and fight for your server and fight for pride, not whine the moment you aren’t in first. Did you ever consider the monumental amount of balls that it takes for any server that you are crushing to show up every day and try and leave your corpses in the dirt? SoS has been spoiled. You haven’t gotten legit rocked in a match in well over 3 months. You have won Tier 1 9 of 10 times. Now there is complaining the second you don’t outnumber someone? Try playing on Blackgate for a day and maybe you’ll appreciate fighting a losing battle a little more. An attitude that “we aren’t winning so we won’t try” spits on every server that has stuck it out through all of the bad and all of the blowouts. All those servers showed up because of good fights even when you were crushing them and, now that someone is doing it to you, you take your ball and go home? Please.

EDIT: This post is directed to any individual on SoS that doesn’t want to show up to WvW because JQ is beating you. To all of you out there who are fighting the good fight, /salute.

1. Whether or not they formed super servers the queue should still work correctly.

2. It’s not like a queue is a new gizmo and no one is sure how it should work.

How are they not working correctly?

Despite what Anet says, there were NO WHERE near 100+ people in TCBL when it had a queue. Not. Even. Close.

I do not know what causes this problem, but it seems that it keeps thinking that people are still in WWW when they are not.

Also… I wonder why Anet shares alot of information on the game but they never clearly stated exactly how much players there are before the queue comes. Did they ever gave a reason why they don’t tell us how many?

I recall one of the developers said in the wvw question thread that the wvw population cap is dynamic. So if there’s less people playing pve then there is more space for wvw or vice-versa. So say there’s 1,000 players in pve, that could mean only 200 player space for wvw. They basically said the population caps are different day to day, but in all cases the caps are equal for each team per boderlands.

They should still be able to tell us which number we are in line.

It would be nice to know I’m 10th in line even I don’t know if there are 10 people or 150 people behind me.
