SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
people aren’t saying that it “wont be fun with out gear”.
Actually…you said that:
most people play mmo’s for loot… not for character skins. Skills make PvP fun…but so does the gear you collect which also improves your character. They took out a large chunk of the equation. People are getting bored quicker now. It doesnt work.
Collecting new loot is fun as hell. The majority of any MMO customer base will agree with that.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
There is no reason the game can’t cater to two different types of players. They just need to add in some additional incentives for end game content. It doesn’t have to be gear progression. It can be other things that players care about. Titles, mounts, pets, whatever. They just need to be creative and think up incentives that don’t contradict their basic premises about requiring players to grind content to compete. I’m sure they can do it. They clearly have a talented crew working for them.
This is fine. I don’t have a problem with titles, cosmetics, pets, mounts, etc. I guess most people don’t, although you never know.
The problem is some people are saying they want better gear. They need to grind for gear or it’s no fun. If they can’t put more time in the game and get better equipment as a reward, they aren’t having fun.
That’s all I’m against in this game. I don’t want time to become the one big factor in who gets the best gear and therefore has the best chance to win.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
I would guess that Anet will continue to make the game that they want. They seem to want a game that includes no grind for gear with stats. They don’t need a majority of the market or a majority of the population to make that work…they need enough people to like it so they can remain profitable.
Would they like it to be a blockbuster smash that changes the way games are made? I’m sure they would, but it is not required for a game to be successful.
There are plenty of games out there that satisfy the needs of people who absolutely must spend weeks grinding that Ultra Sharp Sword +100 so they can show it off to the poor saps who only have Sharp Swords +50.
The market doesn’t need another one, and can very much use a game like GW2.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
So I don’t understand why you bought GW2.
Were you under the impression that there was a long gear grind available that would differentiate you from the people who have less time than you by means of bigger stats?
A simple check of the GW2 site, the articles, the dev blogs, and the videos would have told you this wasn’t the game for you.
I’m not trying to be mean, but I don’t understand some of you.
The game’s design concept was clear: No lengthy grind for items with stats. If you wanted to look different from everyone there would be a grind available for you, but the top level items stat-wise would be available to all without a lengthy grind.
This was not a secret, nor was it ambiguous.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
@Cik
This isn’t real life. People aren’t supposed to play GW2 as a second job to get rewards. This is meant to be entertainment, not another career.Real-life shouldn’t be a socialist utopian either, though i can understand where some folks might expect that. . .~47%. But most strive for accomplishments and the personal rewards and tangible achievements that come with it.
Entertainment doesn’t have to be a second job; that is unless one chooses to think that anything that requires effort for a tangible reward that distinguishes one from another is a chore, and that which most successful folks are able to achieve within a virtual entertainment space is something that should be gifted to everyone, or in which everything should be homogenized to quell the minority disappointment in feeling inferior about not being able to achieve.
That’s all.
Bring the same gear as everyone else to PVP and prove you know how to fight. Nothing wrong with that.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
People are getting bored quicker now. It doesnt work.
Collecting new loot is fun as hell. The majority of any MMO customer base will agree with that.
Maybe for some of you.
I was just in WvW. Tons of people having fun. No one crying about their lack of loot or how bad the game is because they can’t outstat the other side.
Just people running around slaughtering each other and having fun doing it.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
From my perspective, people that use this argument are giving a skewed opinion due to their lack of play time to compete with those who do have more play time.
That can easily be reversed.
From my perspective, people who use your argument are people who possess more time than skill and don’t want that exposed when they can no longer dominate because they had the time to grind for stat based items. Now they have to rely on their skill only and it’s failing them.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
“Does Every Class Suck”
No. Every class does have sucky players though. The sucky players blame the class.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
Once upon a time, in the small village of Emoville, the most popular fruit was apples. Nearly everyone loved apples, because they were crunchy and crispy and they were eaten every day. One day, however, a pear seller wandered into the village square. People were intrigued, because the pear seller claimed her pears were totally different from apples and would just melt in your mouth when you bit into them.
Everyone tried the pears. Some of the villagers loved them, finding them succulent and juicy and delicious, and much nicer than apples.
But some people complained that the pears were no good because they weren’t as crispy and shiny as apples.
As a result the village divided into two camps – those who loved apples, and those who loved pears. They spent all day arguing over which was better. Apple lovers claimed pears were an inferior product, whereas pear lovers claimed that apple lovers just didn’t know how to eat pears properly in order to appreciate them.
True story.
And then the Watermelon seller wanders by accidentally and the stuff really hits the fan
And then Porky came by with a big fat steak that revolutionized the way people ate.
You are all welcome because I know aside from a few whacked out vegetarians who claim that eating meat is unnatural, we all truly love meat and I have billions of subscribers a day to prove it.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
Listen carefully: all games are about the rewards.
I can attest to this.
I remember grinding away in SimCity 4 til I was rewarded. After I was rewarded I was able to win. That made it all worthwhile.
I’m doing the same thing on Minecraft now. I grind til I get my reward then I am able to show off my reward to other players. Nothing beats that. Very fun.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
Don’t worry, slugger. Even if you think you don’t matter to the game developers, you still matter to me.
hugs for everyone
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
Do you also want credit for quests you’ve done previously? Why not just create an alt, and have the game apply every benefit from your first character onto your alt? Map completions, quests, money, crafting…apply it all because you’ve done it all before so it should count for all your characters.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
The same people who hated Star Wars after 2 weeks, then hated GW2 after 2 weeks will also play for 200 hours, finish up the new content in 1 to 2 weeks and hate MoP.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
Plenty of games out there that will stroke your ego and let you “show off” your awesomeness by having a sword +100 instead of a sword +95.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
That’s a tragic tale of woe and hardship.
How much time have you invested almost completing your map while not having fun at any point?
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
Where did you hear that? Did you not read any of the years of promotional material or reviews or even the website before buying the game?
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
Your speech is not restrained on the internet. You are free to setup a website of your own and say whatever you want.
Your speech may be restrained in other people’s areas of the internet depending on what kind of environment they wish their area to have.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
That’s how it goes nowadays.
You go in game and play….you have fun, the people around you are playing the game and having fun….then you go to the forums and the worst piece of trash game ever has been released and why couldn’t they just be like WoW?
Some people will complain simply because they can.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
Type /age in your chat, take a screenshot, and post it here. Then we’ll talk about how it’s “not” addictive.
:-P
I do find it amusing that most of the people complaining about how boring and unaddictive it is seem to have played 300 hours in the last 3 to 4 weeks.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
Words are a little more than “sequences of sounds”.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
You can do perfectly fine in dungeons wearing magic find.
If you’re getting squashed wearing magic find, you’ll get squashed wearing any other gear, because you’re standing in the bad that’s squashing you either way.
It’s this mentality that is the problem.
It’s the player, not the gear.
You should probably realize that.
But the player that equips magic find is selfish and is not out to provide the maximum benefit to the group.
Don’t group with that person.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
Yes it has failed to be revolutionary and the numbers will tell this over time. People are already not sticking around. Guild Wars 2 will not have the impact on the MMO genre that it wanted to. World of Warcraft is still the pack leader, I just cannot see GW2 having 10 millions active players.
So?
I don’t understand why people care who the “pack leader” is.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
So yeah. I’ve been 80 for about 2 weeks. I’m 400 armorsmith and 400 jewelcrafting.
I have made 2-3 full sets of exotics. I have almost 100% world completion.
I have done almost everything there is to do in this game. And I’m not playing 24/7. I just set myself to a task and do it.
There is no feeling of end game. Doing events over and over and over and over and over is a grind. Doing dungeons over and over for their gear skins is a grind.
There are no epic fights, no raids, most of the dungeons are poorly designed with trash being harder than the actual bosses. (Seriously, I can solo the first 2 bosses in warden wing Arah. – Really?)
The game is a grind – the PvP feels lackluster at best, especially wvw. Zerg vs zerg is not my idea of fun. I pretty much ignore the objectives in wvw and run around just looking for solo fights or 1v2’s 1v3’s.
Where is the end game? Where are these “Dynamic Events” you are speaking of because I haven’t ever seen them.
And to you people, who I have seen post this in so many other threads. To answer your question “The game has been out only 3 weeks, what do you expect?”
I expect a game, upon release to have enough content to keep me busy until new content comes out. Not to have 2 days worth of event seeing and then do those same events for hours and hours.
Something rings untrue in this post.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
1)FUN is not enough…
Indeed.
I don’t know which silly sod thought games were supposed to be about fun.
If I don’t start the game with a sword and end with a sword +900 I haven’t enjoyed myself no matter how much fun I had along the way.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
1 toon. He’s male.
I don’t believe I’ve ever rolled a female toon in any game I’ve played, so the next 4 (when I get around to them) will be male as well.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
I have an Asuran thief named Sylkk.
When I was growing up, I read the series The Belgariad by David Eddings. One of the characters was a shifty little man named Silk. Fast, agile, liked stealing things.
I usually try to use that name when making burg/thief type characters.
Silk was taken, as was Sylk, and, lacking any creativity or originality, I tried Sylkk third and it worked.

Contest locusts are always hungry.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
Oh and being rewarded for doing something challenging is part of games being fun.
Otherwise you’re just wasting time.
Most games are wastes of time. It’s why they’re games instead of jobs.
There is really nothing useful about having a Thor’s Hammer Of The Heavens with it’s +100 AOE lightning damage and 35 second stun.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
You can’t tell thousands of MMO players who enjoy progression not to enjoy progression, or that they should find certain activities fun, like doing the same types of things as other MMOs, but without the point in doing them. Good luck with that. Most players want some overarching purpose of doing what they’re doing. Otherwise it just feels like a colossal waste of time (which it is anyway, but at least with character development you feel like you got something out of it).
There are plenty of games on the market that will satisfy those peoples’ desire to have someone give their gaming experience purpose.
I don’t understand why people leave those games that already do things they want to do.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
It’s not their job to tell me what’s fun and what’s not. If someone enjoys farming, let him do it.
Or you could find a game where farming is an integral part of the design and play that.
Please don’t try to turn GW2 into the game you like. I like this one. If you like grinding and treadmills there are plenty of options out there for you. You should play one of those.
I don’t go to WoW forums and complain about the grind and the treadmill. I simply play other games that are more in line with what I want to play.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
I amkitten off man for real, who the heck do they think they are putting limits on me?!
…
You try to tell ME how to play? Yeah you can stuff that where the sun doesn’t shine.
…
I am a full grown adult and I will NOT be told what or how I am to play my games. This is a message to you ANet, You don’t revert that RIGHT NOW, I am out of here and I will take everyone I turned onto this game(they feel the same way) with me, and I will not be spreading the good word, I will spread a bad word instead.
Fix that or ELSE.
I was hoping you’d end with “DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM? DO YOU? YOU KNOW WHO I AM?!?”
But alas…I was disappointed.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
Conversely, I have no idea what 2+2 is, but I’m also a genius.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
As long as transfers are free and instant and you are allowed to transfer to the winning servers, nothing is going to change.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
I thought I was having fun until I found out GW2 gave me herpes.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
Ahh yes. The good ole days. I remember way back in August when we’d fall downhill and bump into three points of interest, a new vista and a pile of gold.
You kids have it very hard nowadays.
Now get off my lawn.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
I dont really think age has anything do do with the issue. When you sink a large sum of your time into something like an MMO, you SHOULD be expected to be rewarded.
I don’t expect to be rewarded.
I hope I have fun. If there’s no fun, all the rewards in the world mean nothing and I quit playing.
If it’s tons of funs, no fluffy rewards are needed and I’ll play for as long as it’s fun.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
The trick is to not waypoint travel frivolously like the way you are describing it to us.
So…why there are waypoints in game? Is theire purposue the same as loot chest? Just to shine and “be”?
To travel great distances at a cost. Short hops are ok but TBH you should plan your questing as much as possible with the least cost. If you spend at the same rate that you earn you can see how you will not have much money.
Putting something in game only for purpouse of “use in case of emergency” is called a bad design, nothing more.
How did you get that out of the post you responded to?
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
I don’t think ArenaNet is out to get you. They’re not plotting ways to waste your time.
It’s a bug. File a bug report.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
I often thought it was odd that so many decisions in other games are re-rollable or changeable in some way.
This one’s permanent. I hope ANet leaves it like that.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
Transfers are free.
There is no reason for anyone to complain about WvW queues.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
squints
I see what you are saying.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
Because “Cannibal Women In The Avocado Jungle Of Death” made no sense, and World Of Warcraft was already taken.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
“OMG, you play this MMO? I play it too! We have so much in common, lets be friends!” (0.o)7
HAHA
Since my last response was deleted and I was infracted I will add something meaningful.
I generally don’t talk to too many people in games. I got tired of helping someone kill THE BAD GUY only to have them message me for weeks asking how I’m doing, how my day was, what kind of music I listen to, am I on facebook, etc.
Let’s just kill things together and be non-chatting friends.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
My suggestion. Larry Bird and Michael Jordan in a gym with 1 computer. They both want to play GW2, so they play a game of horse where each shot gets progressively more difficult to the point of absurdity like shots from the roof and shots from the moon.
Then a picture of a monkey and/or a midget because everyone loves monkeys and midgets.

Meaning, the money they have they will be keeping it close to their chest in order to better themselves.
Kick them from your guild if they won’t surrender all their booty to you!
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
Otherwise, you’re stuck asking your fellow guildmates just to donate gold to the cause, and lets face it, more likely than not they will be stingy since yet again were in the early gearing phases.
You mean, guilds might need to be organized and work together?
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
If you want more survivability, might not want to build a glass cannon.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
I agree.
I am glad there are no roles cast in stone or a rigid set of rules defining what I should be doing in combat.
SOS Spy Team Commander [SPY]
I’d rather be able to play 99% of the game and let them fix the trading post when it makes sense.
I think they did a great job with the launch. They shut down non-essential services so the core of the game could be played without issue. They did it with minimal downtime. They brought up non-core parts of the game in an orderly, timely fashion in a sequence that made sense as resources became available and critical issues became less prevalent.
For me, this was a very smooth release.
