Inspiration behind the Mesmer profession?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Purecura.1795

Hello Tyrians,

I was wondering where did the inspiration for the Mesmer start? Why are Mesmers ( Human Mesmers mostly), so into high fashion, the arts, and beauty? Who designed the concept, from the combat style, to the lore? Who had such a vision? Why the butterflies?

If anyone at Arena Net ( Cough Cough, Robert Gee) or anyone else could answer this post for me that would be great. I’am a huge fan of the Mesmer, and I’ve mained the profession since GW2 began!

I wouldnt mind that idea. NPC’s already do that in game. They run under a waypoint and then disappear. However I doubt ANET would do that, It would make things complicated and im sure they’d have to change the current system.

0: Ranger
Requirements: Equip Bow, Press 1, and learn to activate autoattack
Ranger can afk through most leveling content thanks to the pet.

Easy: Warrior, Guardian
Requirements: Equip GS, Press 1, occasionally dodge and use utilities
Have lots of defense, warrior being easier due to more mobility and more passive defense both are still easy.

Medium: Engineer, Thief, Necro
Requirements: All of the previous things, learn a class mechanic and abuse it
Only hard until you learn some important feature of the class, then it becomes really easy. For example, when a thief learns to stealth and realize they can bypass most of the obstacles in this game, they become really easy, or when a necro learns to Death Shroud.

Hard: Mesmer, Elementalist
Requirements: Learn how the class works
These are the hardest because not only are the builds not complete until later levels, you actually have to realize what stuff like clones and attunement do and how they work. Basically, hardest to wing it.

^This… As a Mesmer Main for 3 years, and a Champion Illusionist, I will say a Mesmer takes many hours of dedicated time and play. I think a true seasoned Mesmer, is a Mesmer that does not rely on METABATTLE.com but still creates a build effective for PvP or even PvE.

With that said, Mesmer in general is a very complex, intricate class. You need to know what you are doing, at all times while reading the enemies behavior while in combat.

Mesmer is not smash your keyboard to burst or do damage. A Mesmer needs to be one with his clones. I have fought many mesmers who are very easy to spot, for they move in all directions, not flowing gracefully alongside their clones. That is not how a Mesmer should play. Mesmers, Eles, and Engis are the most complex classes in GW2. Each delivers a variety of skills through multiple ways. The player must be aware of that, and deliver effectively in a fluid manner.

[BW2] Chronomancer Feedback Thread

in Mesmer

Purecura.1795

I really loved Chronomancer this weekend, and played it exclusively in PVP testing out a few different builds. My feedback will reflect ONLY PVP gameplay. I tried out Chrono Shatter, Clockdown and eventually fell in love with and perfected a terribly fun Chrono-Bunker build utilizing wells.

Continuum Split:

  • This skill felt so appropriate for chronomancer and very unique. It can be used in so many different ways for offense or defense that I really think ANet hit it out of the park. There were a few buggy instances when something would happen to prevent me from returning to the original timeline, leaving my continuum split to linger on the battlefield. Once, I got stomped at the far point during a continuum shift and after I respawned at my teams base, I warped back to the far point before I could even walk back onto the battlefield. I can’t say if my split had been destroyed by an enemy or not, but it was extremely convenient for getting back into the fray, and presumably an unintended, overpowered function.

Weapon (Shield):

  • Overall: I have a fondness for the mesmer bunker playstyle and absolutely LOVE the shield as a weapon for mesmers.
  • Echo of Memory -> Deja Vu: I really love the way this skill synergizes with Mental Defense. Proccing both blocks summons 2 Avengers and 1 Defender in a very short period of time allowing for some quick and effective bunking. I do think that the two separate, single-hit blocks were underwhelming and I would love to see this skill function as a channeled block more like the original Mimic but with a phantasm summoned at the end or beginning of the block.
  • Tides of Time: This skill is a 10/10 for me right now. It serves as effective yet balanced utility, support and offense with an appropriate level of counter-play. I love the animation and the chance to double-stun an enemy if they cant dodge the super obvious wave heading their way.

Skills (Wells): Playing a support/bunker mesmer is endlessly fun when using these wells and I am so happy that the defensive mesmer playstyle is being supported. I love that the wells reward skillful play and that makes them much more satisfying than our other utility skills because they require more thought and strategy to pull off with maximum efficiency. Some wells were definitely better than others and I think some further tweaking is needed for each of them to be at 100% in balance and function.

The biggest issue I came to in regards to wells was that my teammates didn’t understand or know how to benefit from them. More often than not my allies would go about their combat as if the well wasnt there at all because they didnt have any visual cues to let them know that it would benefit them to fight on the wells. For one, since the Chronomancer is still in beta, many of the players simply weren’t familiar with the skills or their function and therefore couldn’t know how to play around them to get their support perks. Second, to chronomancers and non-mesmers alike, the wells all look essentially the same (except for Gravity Well, with its stand-out animation). This leaves allies in the dark as to whether they should stick around on a particular well or move on. I think if each well had a more unique animation that was more telling of its effects, this could help significantly. For example, if Well of Eternity had a more blue-ish tint to it and had some misty water effects, it would be more apparent to everyone that it was a healing skill, and any allies looking for health could know to advantage of it. Also a well like Calamity that provides allies with no incentive to stick around (outside of traited alacrity) has no visual cues to indicate that they have nothing to gain from fighting on the well. I think that since these skills have so many team-support properties, there should be a more obvious way for allies to identify which well can Heal them and which well can grant them Quickness etc.

Finally, I really think there needs to be an offensive condition well, lest that style of gameplay get left in the dust in regards to these utilities. Obviously it needs to be more Mesmer and less Necromancer so, something that pulses confusion and finishes with torment or even retaliation for allies would be perfect. I think just one confusion-based well could open up even more builds for the chronomancer.

  • Well of Eternity: My new favorite heal-skill hands down. There is so much play involved with this heal and so much team support that can come from skillful use of it. My only issue with this skill was the vigor. It seemed sort of random and ineffective to me and I never made use of it. If the idea is to enable the mesmer to dodge within the well in order to survive long enough for the final burst heal, that job is better done with a simple Blurred Frenzy. Since the condition removal trait for wells has been removed, and Chronomancers lack any real cleansing without taking the Inspiration trait line, I would suggest that instead of pulsing vigor, each pulse could cleanse 1 condition. Otherwise I wouldn’t change a thing.
  • Well of Precognition: I tried to find something to love about every one of the wells since I was so smitten by their concept and animations, but this one felt the most useless to me. I wanted to like this one more-so than the others since its the only well that also acts as a stun-break, but the functionality just isn’t there at this point. Precognition implies a preemptive, proactive sort of play, but the stun-break and final blur of this skill make it much more reactive than it should be. The unblockable buff seems really trivial and the final blur was seldom beneficial enough to myself or my team to warrant us sticking around on the well until its completion. Finally, a 45 second CD on a utility skill with so little impact just didn’t warrant its use in any build for me. Perhaps this well could pulse Aegis and finish with a blur to support a more defensive ‘premonition’ like feel?
  • Well of Calamity: This well ended up making into my final bunker build. The short cooldown made it easy to maintain weakness/cripple on enemies when holding a point, and for slowing enemies heading your way. The damage seems balanced, though I never played a high-power build so for me it was more consistent/dps and less burst-like.
  • Well of recall: This well seems like a must-have for Chronomancers. Paired with the Alacrity from AWTEW it really made me feel like I was making an impact in supporting my team. With skillful play, I was also able to maintain a decent amount of Alacrity uptime for myself which made me love the elite specialization even more. This well rewards skillful play more so than others and was extremely satisfying to use. The chill at the end is really nice since anyone standing there when it ends deserves to be punished.
  • Well of action: I went back and forth with this well, eventually deciding that it felt right. It worked really well in a build I used that made the most of Slow, and its utility was versatile enough that I found myself using it a variety of other builds. The quickness at the end rewards the user and allies enough that it can make a significant impact in battle if the team is aware of its effects and knows how to take advantage of it.
  • Gravity Well: I really love this elite, but I miss the float so much. If we could remove the final pull in favor of a shorter float I would be thrilled. The floating aspect is what made this skill so unique and really held the flavor of the skill in my opinion. I got a lot of players complaining that it was OP when I hit them with 2 Gravity Wells back to back (they didnt know about the skill either so they didnt know how to escape/avoid it), but the smarter players knew that a simple blink or stun break with stability protected them completely, so the counter-play is definitely balanced. Also the long cast-time is easily interrupted by the players who knew what to look for, so I feel like that is in a good place as well.

I agree with some of the suggestions here.

I was wondering if the Legendary Ventari Stance, is worth using? I really like the design and concept, and how Support like it is. As a Sylvari Rev, I really want to utilize Ventari.

Is Ventari worth using? If not why? If so, why? Can I play a support healer in some way shape or form using Ventari? Thoughts, comments, and suggestions welcome. Thank you.

Need Help With Future Chronomancer Build

in Mesmer

Posted by: Purecura.1795

Purecura.1795

Hello Mesmers,

I’ve been speculating on how I should build my soon-to-be Chronomancer. I recently changed from Condi PU (which I really loved ), to a Hybrid shatter/lockdown Mesmer, spec’d into… (Dom/Chaos/Illusions – Sw/Sw and Staff are my weapons). Thing is I dont know what Chronomancer compliments more… Shatter? Lockdown? Or Condi? From the Chronomancer traits it seems to compliment Shatter and Interrupt spells and skills more than Condi.

So should I build a Chrono-shatter Mesmer, (Dom/Illusions/Chrono)? Or a Chrono-Lockdown Mesmer, ( Dom/Chaos/Chrono)? What other power builds or hybrids could I utilize? Should I incorporate the Dueling trait line somewhere, since I’am using a main hand sword? Anyway, I wish to get the most out of playing a Chronomancer and hope I can gather some useful information from you all . (Iam currently wearing all Beserker gear, with a mix of Assassin trinkets and Beserker trinkets. I have Runes Of Strength on my armor, and Strength Sigils on my beserker weapons.)

Any mature, sound advice is welcome. Thank you.

-Purecura

P.S: I love staff as a weapon, so I’d want to incorporate the staff somehow in my Chronomancer build, alongside Sword/Shield.

I just logged out and noticed a new issue with this graphic reset problem. I was at Subsample, then was reset Native as went to a new map in PvE. I then changed it back to Subsample, after arriving at the new map.

Here is the thing, as I went underneath a body of water in the same map, my screen went black and switched me back to Native. So it seems bodies of water and land are two different areas in the same map.

This is becoming a rather bothersome issue.

The way the birthday system works is to award gifts on the yearly anniversary of the creation of each character. On the one hand, this means that each of your characters will receive birthday gifts when they reach their annual milestones. On the other hand, if you delete your characters before the yearly anniversary of their creation, you won’t receive a birthday gift. I know this is unfortunate for those of you who regularly delete and re-roll characters, but this is the way the birthday system works.

Thank you Mark for replying. Now I know what I must do in order to fully take advantage of Bday gifts. I will take into account how I go about my characters and look forward to next year. Thank you once again.

If you played since Nov 2012, you know how these character birthdays work yet you come here to complain. Really? It has been the same way year after year, so you have no excuses. You made a choice, by deleted your toons, not to have any birthdays. In no way should ANet start accommodating people’s bad decisions.

Whoa whoa, someone has an attitude. I’am in no way shape or form complaining. I did not fully understand the whole birthday situation even though I have played for 3 years, Its probably because I kept deleting toons.. I agree, I always thought it would be nice to have some story missions to pass before you could become a chronomancer, dragon hunter, reaper, etc. However, it sounds like this will not be the case. They make it sound like we are going to be able to spec into the chronomancer right away if we have hero points. Kinda disappointed by this.

Yea same here. I will be really kittened because I take the story of a game seriously and the classes. ANET did mention something about developing lore in game for the professions, I just hope its true

Mesmer Lore?

Posted by: Purecura.1795

Purecura.1795

I found some lore on Mesmers casting illusionary spells, from Angel McCoy in an interview she did. Here is the link if anyone wants to read it in general. Ill post below, the response from Angel. http://esprits-dorr.fr/node/261

Esprits d’Orr : Are the illusions created by mesmers visible to anybody or only to the caster and the spell target ?

Angel McCoy : This depends. Casting an illusion that can only be seen by one person is an extremely advanced skill as it requires getting directly into an individual’s mind. Only the most skilled of mesmers can do this, and mesmers don’t talk about this ability. If people were to find out that mesmers could do this, it would prejudice people against mesmers and damage the trust and love mesmers work so hard to inspire in others.

No documentation of this ability exists outside the Mesmer community because the targets of this kind of spell don’t realize they’ve been duped. No one else can corroborate their experience either, so…it’s often explained away as battle fatigue. Even within the mesmer community, knowledge of this kind of spell is “need to know” only, which means only the most elder and experienced are initiated into the circle.

I posted a similar thread in the General discussion forum. But like I mentioned there, I’d thought I’d mention here with my Mesmer family.

I’am truly hoping to get more lore surrounding our profession, as well as others knowing that Revenant is coming out and we will need a lore on that class. Conveying that, I’am also hoping that we get to see more of this mysterious, great, and beautiful Mesmer Collective that Countess Anise and Kasmeer are apart of. We do not know much about them at all, so I hope with the expansion, we will get more story on the organization of Elite Mesmers in Heart Of Thorns.

For anyone curious about the Mesmer Collective, here is the Wiki page for it.

( Edit: I found a interview with Angel McCoy, the woman behind the Lore and story for GW2. She states that there are Mesmeric Spells that are so powerful that only the most elite within the Mesmer community have the ability to use them. Here is a response from McCoy herself.

Even within the mesmer community, knowledge of this kind of spell is “need to know” only, which means only the most elder and experienced are initiated into the circle.)

Hello and Greetings ANET and Tyrians,

I was wondering if we will likely see this mysterious elite Mesmer group in Heart Of Thorns expansion!? I’d love to have more lore surrounding the professions now that Revenant is coming out. So hopefully we will get to see more of this mysterious and beautiful group of mesmers make their way to HoT! I’m sure the war against Mordremoth could use support from the Mesmer Collective.

If anyone wishes to know what the mesmer Collective is, take a look here.

The New Perma-Stealth DP Thief

docMed you have no idea what you’re talking about and nearly everything you have said is gross exaggeration or flat out wrong.

DP thief has more on demand stealth and can stealth allies easier than mesmer.
Clones don’t sit in stealth, in fact the auto attack and break out of stealth.
DP thieves have the same amount of teleports if not more.

Seriously how do you fair against thieves because they will eat you for breakfast as the bursts are not too different in amount of damage and a thief can rip 2 boons from you.

They can also do their backstab about every 5-7s or just follow up with HS/shadowshot to keep the damage on.

How does one fair against thieves? I think it truly depends on your Mesmer build to be quite honest. Just a day ago, I dueled against a D/D thief and a D/P thief in WvW. Both had Beserker gear and trinkets with food. I run a condi PU Mesmer and fighting both thieves during separate duels definitely resulted in me winning due to my build/ and skill.

The D/D thief was extremely easy to fight, I mostly baited him out of stealth, while I applied confusion and torment to him. When he re-entered stealth, I too entered stealth and baited him once more with clones. We dueled each other about 5 times and I won each duel.

The D/P Thief was definitely more skilled and aware of my condi burst potential than the D/D thief. I had to really watch him as he tried to bait me into chasing him a bit to apply my conditions, only to enter stealth and try to backstab me. Which he did land a few and they did take a chunk out of my health. However, I was smart enough to apply stacks of confusion and torment as soon as he emerged from stealth. We fought for a total of 3 times, and I won each duel. His only complaint was that it was the torment stacks that he had trouble with.

So point is, while power based Mesmer builds have a harder time fighting thieves, Condition Mesmers have no issue fighting them, as long as the player is skilled enough and refrains from mashing their keyboard.

P.S:) One does need skill and patience when playing a PU condi Mesmer.

I dabble in all game modes (PvX), but I also add something to the game on my OWN, which has helped my boredom!

ROLE PLAYING!

Yes, trust me, role playing adds so much more to a MMORPG, because you actually act as your character, develop a story, and even travel Tyria, in a whole new way when you incorporate roleplaying. I have gone on many adventures with other Roleplayers during my time in Tyria, and let me tell you, without RPing, id be bored by now. You see the game differently than just grind, grind, grind. Sadly lots of people in GW2 and other MMOs are GRIND ZOMBIES and do not realize that by Roleplaying and getting in touch with your character, do you really open up other exciting ways to play a MMORPG.

We should rp, i wanna try! :P

OMG definitely! Its so much fun! RP hotspots are Divinity’s Reach, and Lion’s Arch.

I have so many characters getting in touch with them would either be an orgy or an overtime job.

I only have 2, MAX will be 3 with Rev. I hate ALTs, but realize I want to play other classes to. But I needed to balance myself, due to being a RPer. Depending on how HARDCORE you are, its good to have from 1-5 chrs. Due to the fact that focusing on developing a character for RP is a lengthy process but highly enjoyable.

Everyone should check out the GuildWars2 Roleplaying Website. There are always RP EVENTS listed which are created by the players and not ANET. Role playing events promote fun, adventure and more. EU and NA servers.

Thieves are easy! I see that shatters and interrupts may have trouble but PU condi Melts them with EASE.

I may use a build that not a lot of players think highly of, but guess what? I play the game how I want. Playing as a PU condi who stacks confusion/ torment is a godsend when fighting thieves. Thieves never give me ANY trouble.

Of course nobody is complaining. They brought the class back to roughly where it was before the spec. patch. Now everyone can have fun playing against kitten celestial eles and tanky engineers that nobody can kill because they nerfed the class that could.

Enjoy.

People my not agree with me, but I play as a condi PU, and Engineers never give me problems. I simply melt them with Confusion and torment, then hide in stealth. It’s to much fun.

This is true, but that’s for elementalists. A tempest class which is based on storms, shouldn’t be dabbling in time manipulation. It makes no sense. The skills should be based on the 4 elements instead of arcane.

In actuality, I would have liked an elite that combined the 4 elements into one storm, to make an actual tempest storm.

It’s funny how you say it because in French, time and weather are actually the same word

Anyway, remember that Chill which is definitively an elementalist condition has effects on cooldowns. Are you saying Chill is actually time manipulation?

Rangers can reduce their weapons cooldowns just by switching weapon sets. Time manipulation too?

Thieves can reset all their cooldowns while stealing.

Etc…

Chronomancer will remain the only class that can make all cooldowns move faster. Elementalist doesn’t manipulate time with his elite : he makes it so that the cooldown doesn’t happen as strong in the first place.

But see, you are missing the POINT, while it may be theme wise ok for an elementalist, this is the TEMPEST we are talking about! Storms, are the THEME for a Tempest specializations. Some are upset that REBOUND does not fit the THEME for Tempest as best as an 4 Elemental Storm Elite would fit!

As good as Rebound may be for allies, I have to find it out-of-theme and basically a Chronomancer skill. In fact it’s blatantly treading on the Chronomancer’s toes and certainly nothing to do with storms or tempests.

I would suggest bringing back Maelstrom. Shouting “MAELSTROM!!” would be really cool anyway, as it has to be a shout, right.

Have the GW1 style of it dropping out of the air and putting down a five-second aoe pulsing daze with a tiny damage component. Done. I know the GW1 original lasted ten seconds, but whatever.

Thank you!!!!! See people! Lets get it together. Hellooo.

I think the Overload skills look pretty. Overload earth looks cool! The Auramancer has some cool looking utility spells too. All look pretty. Oh and that rebound skill, pretty close to a Chronomancer’s theme. But hey, I think the skills all look Pretty.

It could actually synergize well with mesmer/chronomancer so why feel insulted?

Yes, it could synergize well Chronomancer’s Alacrity effect. But my issue is the Theme more than the actual effect of the skill. Which is why the title of my post complains that Tempest are not Chronomancers.

There are other post complaining about the actual effect of the skill and how its implemented, this is not that post. The issue ( Like I’ve been stating ) is that the effect of Rebound is very similar to the signature effect Chronomancers grant themselves and other players. That effect is Alacrity which is exclusive to Chronomancers, due to their theme as Time Manipulation Mages. Tempest spec, should focus on storm theme spells, like their F1-F4 skills, and even their utility spells. Rebound ruins the theme, regardless if it may be useful.

If Anet wants to use Rebound as a spell for a Elementalist spec, then they should name the spec something else and not Tempest. Perhaps, Archmagus would be a better name instead of Tempest… Maybe then the elite Rebound might make more sense, theme wise.

Both elementalists and mesmers work in the arcane.

Mesmer is a master of illusions and reality manipulation, control, now chronomancy. Elementalist work is still based in the elements and the raw ether energy that is arcana.

Not much change there, elementalists as tempests are simply going to go deeper. Elementalists have always had a handle in arcana, ether energy and control of it.

Elementalists and mesmers work it to different ends. Rebound is a fine skill for elementalists, lore wise.

But this is a ‘Tempest’ specialization we are dealing with. While I understand where you are coming from in terms of it being “fine”, lore wise for an “Elementalist”, its just that the elite skill “Rebound” seems very “Lack-Luster” for a Tempest style spec. When I think of a Tempest, I think of raging storms and pushing the elements to their limits. And “Rebound” does not come across as a good fit for a tempest elite. Maybe Rebound will be a good fit for another future spec for an Elementalist, but certainly not for a “Tempest” specialization. The theme just doesn’t fit in my eyes.

Tempest has nothing to do with time quickness and slow is more about time control lower cd is more of a mages trick.

Actually, Chronomancers get access to a unique effect, called Alacrity. Alacrity is an effect unique to mesmers specialized as chronomancers which reduces skill recharge. https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Alacrity

So Tempest elite is border line on the Chronomancer’s skill recharge rate specialty. Which needs to change because its not a ’Mage’s Trick’. Its dealing with time manipulation, by reducing a skills cooldown, which Chronomacers specialize in, and Tempest should not. Tempest should have a Storm Based Elite.
