Well, that went pretty quick. The engineer build that roflstomps anything turned out to be a turret heavy rifle based power build. It didn’t do too well. The guy (as I had predicted) was quite a sore loser, and decided to degenerate into accusations such as ‘mesmer is for no brainer button mashing’. weeeeeeee

Edit: Aaaaaaaand he just claimed playing a warrior takes more skill than playing a mesmer. See second screenshot.

Is it viable? I guess. I mean, you can probably complete most content with it. Condition mesmer sucks in PvE though, it’s only viable because of how easy PvE is.

4v5 is fine, I would be a hypocrite if I said 4v5 is impossible, its simply unfavorable. a probability that can be beaten with a smidgen of tactics, as apposed to the traditional PvP culture of “hurrr, movin’ object. Shall spam cooldowns on it.”

It doesn’t really matter whether he ‘sees that coming’.

A duel between skilled players has a different dynamic than a duel between unskilled players. In unskilled players duels end up being build vs build. However, with skilled players the only requirement for the builds is simply that they work. Past that point, it becomes a question of skill.

Either a PU condition build or a shatter build or a phantasm build will serve to beat any thief build. The only question that remains is whether you have the skill to see it through.

I didn’t say that you are unskilled if you lose. I said that you would simply be less skilled than him. That is the point of a duel, is it not? To determine who is the most skilled player.

Again, if you read what I said, I didn’t say that those builds are the obvious and easy counter. I said that those builds can counter any thief build. I also said that in fights where both players are skilled, the only requirement for a build is that it can work. All of those builds fit that criterion, therefor you can use any of them in the duel, and it will ultimately come down to player skill.

If he is more skilled, you lose, if you are more skilled, you win. That’s sorta how things work…

@Condition Overstacking: That would definitely go a long way towards making condition builds more viable, but I’m not convinced it would make them optimal damage-wise. Even assuming 25 stacks of bleed + burning, you’d still do less than a zerker warrior, so I think other tweaks need to be made. That would be a good baseline though.

@Duration stacking conditions: As you mentioned, these really wouldn’t change how condition builds play at all. That being said, it’s a very interesting mechanic, and any interesting PvE mechanic is sorely needed in this game.

That’s what I’m trying to say though. Individual players aren’t particularly different between team and solo queue, but matches do play very differently, and the overall dynamic is very different. I’m aware of this.

But the legitimate complaint is most of what this thread is about.

This I’m also aware of, but that’s not what I originally responded to. I agree with the basic premise of most of this thread, so I didn’t bother to agree with it in writing simply because there was no need. My reply was specifically aimed at those who complain about being unable to handle individual classes, with warrior only being one of several mentioned.

Or AN should just realize this is a premium game, and its unacceptable to disallow players from accessing it beacuse they got cut out.

For premium content, I expect premium service, not being the equivalent of stolen from.

You agreed to a terms of service, wherein you agreed to not negatively impact the playing experience of others.

By disconnecting during tournament matches you have breached the terms of service. You have no rights. You deserve nothing.

Also, you seem to play mostly solo queue. Most of the people in this thread play team queue. They are different worlds in terms of player ability and playstyle, and that also impacts your perceptions.

This isn’t exactly true. If you look at the leaderboards for solo queue and team queue, you’ll see that there’s actually quite a lot of overlap in players. While this doesn’t mean there are no differences between the 2, because there are, it does mean that there’s not much of a difference in individual player skill.

So, while there are definitely a lot of valid complaints of how the mesmer itself doesn’t fit into the team queue meta that I agree with, once people start complaining about individual class matchups, that’s where I have more of an issue.

This is another example of theory not meeting up with reality, in which case, I always go with reality. It’s like this marionette event, where people keep telling me “boss #3 is not that hard, just do _” yet 3/4 of the platform failures are on boss #3, sometimes 4 or 5 times in a row. That tells me that there’s a problem with the event, not the people.

Again, maybe it’s because I learned how to fight warriors before they became commonly regarded as gods, but what I said there lines up quite nicely with reality, and all of the best mesmer players I know have similarly few troubles with warriors.

And similarly here, there’s a problem with PvP game balance with respect to warriors, which pretty much everyone but Arenanet can glaringly see.

On the other hand, this is definitely true. While I have no troubles with warriors in a 1 on 1 matchup, they definitely cause large problems in the meta with a wider look. I’m absolutely not disputing that fact. I simply have problems when people start complaining about individual classes and how they can’t fight them or can’t handle them. It’s one thing to say ‘mesmers have no real place in the competitive team PvP meta, and that’s a problem’. It’s an entirely different thing to say ‘I hate how I get destroyed by no-skill people playing classes x, y, and z’. One is a legitimate complaint, the other is not.

Pyro, you tend to say that pretty much everything is “easy”, which it might be for you, but it obviously isn’t for most others.

I think it also depends on what sort of build you’re running, and at what level you’re playing PvP.

Well, that’s the thing though. Everyone will have a hard time if they give up mentally before even trying, and that’s what seems to happen.

The mesmer toolset is almost unique designed to counter warriors. Warriors have loads of well telegraphed abilities, rely a lot of long cooldown applications of long duration boons, and don’t have the best in-combat mobility. Mesmer hard-counters each of those with great access to active defense, strong boon stripping, and incredibly good in-combat mobility.

Talking about boon duration… I see that one of the points in this build is increasing boon duration (otherwise would be useless to give only 1 sec of boon to allies per example) and I have made a quick test recently. My hero panel says I have 56% of boon duration, about 4% comes from Doubloons, 20% from Chocolate Omnoberry Cream and the rest I can’t recall where. I made a quick test by trigger a elite skill as my Runes of Lyssa would give me all boons. The Rune says the boon would last 5 sec and it was exactly what happened, they lasted 5 secs or less. I also tried to cast Chaos Storm on myself as it could give me some boons too, the boons lasted exactly as the skill’s hint stated. Also, I’m using Signet of Inspiration and I noted that each random boon given from it has lasted exactly the time stated in the skill’s hint. The question is: if a boon should last 5 secs, 50% of it would be like plus 2.5 secs that gives me 7.5 secs.. but I don’t see it happening. I wonder where that increase is going to. I can’t realize it having these 56% more of boon duration.

You’re probably using an on-swap sigil or another on-crit sigil, and the ICD is overwriting your sigil of strength. This will be getting changed in march.

PU provides you with strong defensive boons while in stealth, and increases the duration of your stealths. Is that not enough of a point for you?

Well, there really is no way to mimic a clone perfectly. You’ll always be isolated as the real mesmer rapidly against a competent opponent.

Even things like stealth that seem like they could be helpful, actually aren’t. When I see you stealth, I know instantly that when you unstealth, you’re the real one. Using any skills causes me to recognize the real mesmer. Any normal movement will be the real mesmer.

Ultimately, the only way to truly mimic a clone is to completely cripple yourself.

I guess my problem here is, if this is the attitude that you have, then GW2 isn’t FOR you. Yes, it is clearly lacking in hardcore challenging content. If hardcore challenging content is something you need from a game, then there are plenty of other games that offer it, games that aren’t GW2. GW2 is for players that enjoy casual, relatively pick-up-and-play encounters, and the more “hardcore” content they add, the more it pushes the core GW2 players away.

Says you. I say you’re wrong. I say that GW2 should have content that appeals to players of all types, not just casuals and not just hardcore raiders.

So where does that leave us? Thankfully, the devs agree with me, not you, and the game is in a better place because of it.

It just sort of irritates me when you see people complaining about getting ‘facerolled by button-mashing’ when in reality any competent mesmer should be able to mop the floor with a ‘button-mashing’ warrior.

People make comments as if the warrior tools have no logical counterplay. Stability can be stripped. Immunity is very short duration, sustain can be easily powered through. Warriors really aren’t that difficult to fight unless you completely fail to dodge or counter any of their attacks.

Lets see….other classes complained about.

Stealth abusing thieves? Really? Maybe in WvW, but in PvP if a thief is ‘permastealthing’, then you just captured a point, no sweat. 2 Spam hasn’t been an actually dangerous tactic for about 10 months. Now it only serves to show which thieves are a free kill.

People need to whine less, think more, and play better.

Dishonorable is a mess. It forgets that real life happens and real issues come up with technology too.

There is a huge difference between repeats often offenders and the occasional “oh kitten I have to go” player. Only the former really needs to be punished.

3 times in 3 days is the qualification used for dishonorable as a ‘repeat offender’. If you truly are just an occasional dropout, then you won’t hit that 3 times in 3 days metric, it’s just that simple.

OP is literally saying his internet is unstable and wants to join the game with this internet (which he clearly has no control over) the day after DCing 3 times AGAIN. Wow.

There is absolutely no problem here with the system. Know the 4on5s you ocasionally have to endure? Listen to OP and it will become more frequent.

Correction just to clarify. One dc during the night. One Dc the next morning, one Dc the next morning. Resulting in about a 20 hours ban. Not 3 in one day.

Edit: Basically one DC a day.

So take those 20 hours, stop whining, and fix your Internet. I swear, some people…

Ok, lets see here.

1. iWarden bug – just stands there doing nothing

Yeah, this is a thing. They broke it a couple patches ago. Feel free to bump my thread in the bug forums on it, I’ll be making a new one every Wednesday until it gets fixed.

2. iDefender bug – just stands there instead of attacking… perhaps a pathing issue?

This, however, is not a thing. The iDefender doesn’t do much from a damage point of view, and its attack is not easily visible. What you should see, however, is a buff on yourself that indicates the Defender taking damage for you.

3. iDuelist bug – Targets something completely different than what I’m targeting, usually out of my field of view.

This also is not a thing. The only phantasm that will occasionally bug out from targets is the iWarden. The iDuelist will always attack what you summon it on, so perhaps you’ve summoned it on the wrong target?

4. DE bug – clones target something other than my target, even ambient creatures… which they insta-kill and then despawn. Makes using them for shatters impossible.

So, this isn’t exactly a ‘bug’. More of an incredibly irritating feature that I can almost guarantee will never get fixed. The way DE works is that it summons a clone on the closest viable target, not your current target.

I’d qualify that. Shatter mesmers counter warriors. Phantasm mesmers don’t really do enough damage before they are killed to threaten warriors.

I mean…are you talking in a group fight or if a warrior comes to try and knock you off a treb or point or something? In a group fight, sure, the phantasms squish. In a 1v1 situation, the warrior will be eating dirt practically before he gets close.

Just a note. Attack is a non-stat. It has absolutely zero significance in any way for any part of any calculation for anything in the game. It’s still a mystery why it even shows up on the character pane.

@Godmoney: Just a quick note. Nobody disputes the existence/effectiveness of support builds both in PvP and WvW. It is PvE where suppor doesn’t matter, and if you’re running a full healing build you’re a definite detriment to your team.

Mesmers (and elementalists) will not be competitive in PvP unless ANet nerfs thieves.

It’s really that simple.

Don’t forget about warriors. It seems like a lot of people would rather play a warrior because of how easy it is, honestly.

Warriors have nothing to do with mesmer unviability. If anything, the existence of warriors make mesmers more viable since we counter warriors very hard.

@Immobilizing downed eles: Vapor form makes them invulnerable, just like distortion, but it doesn’t cleanse conditions. If you stack up a lot of immobilize on an ele before they use vapor form, they’ll stay immobilized during it.

Do you think this is gonna change by the upcoming critical damage changes somehow? (which I think it really will change a lot)

It will weight things more in favor of zerker gear over assassins, though I can’t say by how much. Lower critical damage means crits are worth less, and power is relatively worth more.

Here’s a fun way to stop the melee trains in WvW…
implement ‘friendly fire.’

It is an evil proposal, but it would make the performance lag in WvW a lot worse as the server would have to process a lot more data.

Body-blocking like Warhammer had would help as well, but the server performance in WAR was atrocious as a result.

maybe it could work but i think there would be too many complainers if they were to implement it after release

The servers already kitten themselves in a large fight. With body blocking it would be an absolute nightmare.

The PvP in this game is not a truly competitive scene. It never will be.

Play the game because you have fun, no other reason.

I play mesmer in PvP because it’s fun, and that’s all I need.

Indeed, although “fun” needs to be defined in some cases:

- If you define fun as winning, then re-roll to the current FOTM OP class and feel good about yourself believing you’re pro;
- If you define fun as playing a class you’ve fallen in love with at day one, then stick with it through ups and downs.

Alternatively, stick with Mesmer and win anyway, which seems to be the most fun combo. Unless you’re playing extremely high ranked in team queue, Mesmer is definitely viable.

After several months and many patches, this skill is still horridly bugged and absolutely needs a fix.

Very often the warden will spawn and then simply stare at the mob. This happens close to 50% of the time, seemingly more often in situations where you actually need the reflection.

Warriors

Warriors can either be really easy or a massive pain. They really don’t leave many aoe fields like guardians, and they have very high hp. However, they are incredibly agressive and have a lot of cleave. If you play in a tight area, you can often load them up rapidly with conditions before they realize it. At this point it sorta comes down to how they play. If they choose to cleanse the conditions and disengage, there’s not really much you can do to stop them, but most will try a partial cleanse followed by another attack, and at that point they’ll be low enough on health for a second burst to kill them.

PU Condition Specific Fighting Guide

General

Most of your burst damage comes from the torment block. On a moving target, the 5 stacks of torment should be doing around 1000 damage per second. That will really destroy lower hp targets like eles, thieves, and guardians.

In general, a fight has 3 phases: opening, continuation, and finisher.

In the opening phase, you want to load up as many conditions as you can, as rapidly as you can. Confusing images for confusion, the prestige for burn, chaos storm/staff clones for chill/burn/poison/bleeding, the torment block, and then rapid clone explosions that I usually combo with the clone from the torment block. That opening burst puts your opponent on the defensive immediately.

After the opener, you need continued pressure. This usually comes in the form of staff clones and staff autoattacks, more confusion from the iMage or confusing images again, and clone explosions as you produce clones by dodging their attacks. This pressure keeps them at a lowish health, baiting their heal and then keeping pressure on them.

Lastly you hit the finishing phase. You need to make sure you burst someone down before they can react to run away. When this phase actually occurs depends on the class, as well as how you actually do it, but in almost all cases it relies on the torment. For example:

Thieves

Since thieves have generally very low health, they can be finished as early as around half health with a good burst. At this point thieves are generally going to still be pretty aggressive, and this can allow you to catch them with a burst similar to the opener that just loads them up rapidly with conditions for the kill.

Engineers

Many engineers have a trait that scatters mines when they drop below a certain health threshold. These mines allow you to get guaranteed torment procs over and over on a low health engineer to rapidly finish them.

Elementalists

Elementalists tend to leave damaging aoes all over the place, especially when running away. You can use these just like mines for the engineer to get guaranteed torment procs for a fast kill.

Guardians

Guardians, like eles and thieves, have low health. They also have an enourmous amount of cleave/aoe damage when attacking, and you can use this to your advantage in an attack. After the opener, they should have burned most of their high output condition removals, and so if you can get them to attack you near several of your clones, you’ll be able to apply the torment and multiple clone explosions in just a couple cleaving hits, which gives a massive condition burst.

Rangers

Rangers can be rather tough to finish, because the torment has a good chance of being stolen by a pet instead of the ranger themselves. Look for good persistent attacks to get torment procs on the ranger, like barrage, or a well telegraphed attack, like serpent’s strike. Rangers tend to use attacks rapidly, since they have a high amount of access to quickness, and the ones that use shortbow attack even faster. This makes them highly susceptible to a confusion attack like confusing images in conjunction with the iMage. The torment in this case serves as a starting damage, the confusion works as the midway finisher, and the persistent torment kills them when they run.

Necromancers

Necromancers can be really tough to kill, because they’re very good at getting rid of conditions. However, they do have vulnerabilities. The first thing to notice is if they are using traited marks. The trait will make them larger and unblockable, but if they aren’t traited, every single mark is a free torment application, and this will kill them rapidly. Necros especially like to spam marks behind them while they run away at low health, and catching them with torment here can be deadly. Other then that, try to watch for their heal (consume conditions). Once that is on cooldown, try to load them up. Ultimately a necro is hard to finish, and it really turns into an endurance fight.

Mesmers

Mesmers are probably the hardest class to actually land torment on, but there are some tricks you can use to help. Chaos storm is a good aoe to proc torment with, but be careful of the dazes/stuns. Confusing images and the greatsword autoattack are fantastic channeled attacks to catch with the block as well. Lastly, if they are using an offhand sword or scepter, you can actually trigger their block on purpose, then block their counter with your block, applying the torment. A lot of mesmers also have poor condition removal, so load the torment up when they hit lower health, and they’ll die. One other tip for condition burst is that clone explosions go through evade, so blurred frenzy can be a very good way to catch them with a condition burst.

Builds

Builds are honestly pretty flexible. Most Mesmer builds can perform most of the functions I’ve laid out here in some way, but I have personal preferences.

PU Conditions

PU Condition Build

I really like this build. It has excellent teamfight support with aoe weakness/bleed/cripple, and fantastic teamfight support simply by taking a pDisenchanter to soften those boon heavy targets, and ameliorate the condition spam. It also has the capability of effectively negotiating a 2v1 or even 3v1 sometimes, and this really comes in handy when trying to control an objective like the hammer, or skirmish outnumbered at far. Most of my games have been played using this build.

High Phantasm Offense

This build is a bit more specialized, and has some weaknesses. Remember that your team fight utility and survivability is much lower compared to PU Conditions, but your instant damage is much higher. I usually use this on Khylo, as sometimes it can be tough to kill a player that ignores you for the treb with PU Conditions, but a player that ignores your phantasms is a dead player. This is also an excellent far pusher if you want to strip a bunker or other player off of far for a fast decap, but not good for sticking around and forcing an unbalanced fight, so keep that in mind.

Shatter

Shatter is pretty versatile, but again has some notable weaknesses. It’s really strong at instantly swinging a fight, as you can drop some tremendous burst to instantly take out high priority targets in a team fight. Use that to your advantage, and never outstay your welcome in a fight. Come in, burst, and keep moving. Shatter is similar in strength to phantasms in debunking/capping far point, but again is really difficult to skirmish outnumbered with.

Final Words

That’s pretty much all I’ve got for now, though I’m sure I’ll think of some more to say later. Following those general principals have gotten me a quite high win rate in solo queue tournaments, exclusively playing Mesmer, so I wanted to try and share what works for me.
