Conversely, Chalice of Tears that came before it is just legions of bad design squished into negative probability space specifically for the purpose of being “difficult,” when most of the “difficulty” is an utter lack of conveyance or humane design, in an effort to don nostalgia goggles for Nintedohard. Less of that, please, ANet…

If Chalice of Tears was all of that, I’m a God Walking Amongst Mere Mortals of Jumping puzzles.

Fine by me. :p

Really, lack of conveyance is a better way of making a puzzle than follow the crayon arrows on the sidewalk that small children do on the street.
Then again I actually played the “nintendohard” games as if they were normal games. They just required a bit of effort and some brainpower and some skill to figure out most of the time. Just like Chalice of Tears.

Then again, I guess that was a generation ago when handheld games were games played in your hand while these days handheld games are just games that hold your hand.

There’s really not a lot of brainpower or skill involved in “jump in a random direction, die, and 3 minute walk back to restart.” That’s the sort of lack of conveyance and humane design I’m talking about. It does nothing but inflict unnecessary punishment for failure.

A good ‘puzzle’ involves clues. Some of my favorite JPs have been perceptual tests over barely-by-a-pixel jumps. Enough visual cues that the solution should be obvious, but subtle enough that it takes some poking and perspective to grasp it.

Not to give any similarly bad ideas, but if the devs made a Super Meat Boy jumping puzzle that teleported the character back to a checkpoint at every failure, I probably couldn’t even be mad. Not conceptually, at least. I’d probably still skip it, because I’m not a masochist that way, but that would at least follow good design principles: convey the path/action, fast iteration time, engage with challenge, avoid unnecessary punishment.

“Passion of the Fallen”

GW2 is going to be turned into one of those steamy romance novels. I can already imagine the delicate romance scene between the loving Ausra and her romantic Charr flame….

Ok, that’s pretty sick and now I seriously need some brain bleach.

“And the Asura mounted her Charr ally under the hot desert sun, riding emphatically until night had fallen.”

…W-What, we’re clearly getting mounts this expansion. Just trying to give you what you asked for!

Honestly, I just want to see an Asura with a Charr for a mount. That alone would be worth the cost of the expansion.

No, not tengu. Dwarven playable race. I could type out a ton of reasons why, but I don’t need to because Dwarves are just that awesome.

I RP as a dwarf all the time. I set out my Box O Fun, set it to Petrification Mode, then stand there uselessly.

They need more variety in the length and difficulty of new puzzles.

Whenever they bring out a new puzzle it is just a long, tedious chore followed by another one that is just as long.

The Lake Doric one wasn’t so bad. I actually liked it. Kinda. I appreciated that it does what no other JP does; it have multiple paths to success. More of that, please, ANet!

It’s not so much about difficulty, more an overused mechanic.

I’ve been saying this for a while, but I suspect the reason why adds are prevalent is due to GW2’s combat features. With a sufficient number of defensive tools to ignore damage (dodge, aegis, etc), a single creature can have a difficult time threatening one player, and if other players support, there’s not much of a challenge. This game is fairly bad at monolithic battles, sorry to say.

So, adds get thrown in to complicate the encounter. It gives the enemy other agents to carry out actions and forces players to divide their attention. They have to make choices, which keeps them more engaged.
It also makes CC more valuable, rather than just waiting for a blue bar that might not even expose itself. Most adds are going to be interruptable, and that gives CC-heavy builds more to do.

Granted, I could do without the bloodstone golem’s suicide launch bombers as a legion of 15,000 adds, but in general, I actually support the practice.

[Suggestion] Attaining Crystalline Ore

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

For those that cannot devote 1h 30m+ to do the DS meta. You can enter DS any time and find a few pods. I tried and got 15 Crystalline Ore within 10 minutes or so, just running around looking for single pods. It’s really slow to get all the ore you need that way, but it’s an easy way if your character has high mobility. Just 10 to 15 minutes per day and you certainly have 100 in a week. Since the maps renew every 2 hours or so, this can be done multiple times per day. If you are lucky, you get into a map where the meta failed before and there are more pods.

I do that on occasion as well. Last time I did it, I got . .

4.

There just aren’t enough stray pods, and most drop only 1, so it’s not typically worth it.

Daily AP Trading and Historical achievements

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

I will give you an alternative to your third option:
Increase the daily AP cap by an amount equal to the amount of your un-obtainable AP.
So for example, if you did absolutely everything and you don’t miss any AP at all, then your daily cap will be 15000.
However, if you are a newer player and miss the “hint completion” achievement (which doesn’t exist anymore) then your daily cap will be 15010 AP instead.
This keeps things simple, instead of trading daily AP for un-obtainable AP, you continue finishing dailies to get those.

Sounds like a fantastic idea!

[Suggestion] Attaining Crystalline Ore

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

As others have said, the likely reason why we haven’t had alternative methods of acquiring Crystalline Ore is because ANet needs a hook to keep people coming back to Dragon’s Stand. (This problem will only become more acute when the next expansion is released.) It’s similar to how people keep coming back to Dry Top because it’s the game’s only source of Quartz (aside from the HI node).

I can buy Quartz. (Don’t need to, got a stack of 500 I should be selling.) If I could buy Crystalline Ore, I would. :\
So maybe we only need Dry Top for Geodes? Nope, I can PvP for those. Because going to Dry Top is labored and frustrating, but PvP potions give me piles of the stuff.

And I only got about 40 C-Ore on my last run. I got zero 10-ore hits, maybe one or two 3-ore drops. If anything, those higher-value drops need to be much less rare, and I think the acquisition rate might be more reasonable.

Not in a huge rush as it is, since the Amalgamated Gemstones are also a hideously expensive grind.

Yeah, it’s about two hours including the time it takes to open up all of the pods. A lot of maps do manage to finisher quicker though.

Ideally you will want to be start the map with 70 keys. I think that was the number I used during the first push to farm ore for the current legendaries. That’s like 350 of each of the other map currencies which isn’t that difficult or time consuming to get. You can get that in less than an hour per map. I average about 1K of TD in an hour depending on meta completion, about 500 in AB from challenges through octovine completion, and about 700 in VB by hopping to each of the camp final metas and by doing the night meta. It’s probably more like 4 hours spent at most for a DS meta.

For more passive gain, there’s also the Aurillium node in the home instance and the Ley-Energy converter. A free machete every day if you want it, then you can convert whatever currency you have the most of to whatever you have the least of (for me it’s TD crystals), and buy more machetes before the meta.

Appreciated! Of course, now I have to get over the “Undyed backpack, dyeable wings” schism. Woe. 100% first world problem.

That matters less in this case. The backpack itself is a nondescript grey metal that fits close and small between the shoulderblades — when the wings extend and more bits extend in the middle then they can dye and the “hub” can dye. One can easily see it as a glow covering the metal case rather than a jarring color change. Or as an opening of the case to extend glowing parts.

OP wants pics, though, so I have a number of dye schemes (generally I have a palette for each alt that I try to use, or a dyeing style in the case of my sylvari necro who just likes bright colors and has no aesthetic sense in matching them). Here are the ones that happen to be in the outfit on character select. The background badly washes out the force glow but on the other hand the armor dyes themselves show up much better than is easy to accomplish in game.

Yeah, I justified the purchase already. The combo/outfit together is pretty snazzy. It’ll continue to bring “dyeable backpack” to the wishlist.

I’ve had no issues getting into a map on NA. I need to farm like 4K+ ore to buy up all of the guild vendor rewards and for the rest of the HoT legendaries that will be eventually released. I have zero issues with the current acquisition method of ore and don’t see myself running into issues getting onto a map.

So, the usual method, then?

  • Squad in 20 minutes early
  • Attempt to taxi to map
  • Pray taxiing actually works
  • Wait the remaining time
  • DIE
  • Pray Megaserver doesn’t boot you anyway
  • Respawn

. . .And there’s zero problem with this?

I’m not in a tremendous rush, so I’m fine just taking a handful of machetes and running to the few pods that exist without the meta, but gathering for the meta should have been updated a year ago.

Also, 4k+ Ore. Sweet mercy, you have my sympathies and good fortune to you. May you get many 10-ore drops to speed you along.

Suggestion for Roleplaying

Two things that would help:

1. Add the option to right-click emote names, like you can with /say or /map. This makes it very easy to report inappropriate roleplaying (as verbal abuse, weirdly enough.)

2. Reduce the emote range. Please, by the Six, Abaddon, Gaheron, anyone, reduce the emote range. Almost nothing that happens in DivReach or Rata Sum is worth everyone hearing.

Dragon Stand is perfect as is, and they must dont have to touch it.
The difficulty in general was nerfed like 1 year ago, before it was much worse.

It’s not a matter of difficulty. I never have major issues in Dragon Stand. (Except when Mouth decides it’s funny to mass-fear/kill an entire island… gg, Anet)

The problem is the timing and the obnoxious gymnastics it takes to get into the One Map doing anything. It’s a great map, when you can get there.

It’s the expansion where ANet decides to re-iterate the game, and changes it to a datmg sim. In it we follow Queen Jenna across the countryside and watch her date numerous young men. By increasing our mastery levels we can influence the outcomes of the dates and her eventual choice of consort. The hightpoint of the expansion will be the wedding, of course, in which our chosen mastery lines are critical for which flowers are selected and the colors of the carpeting.

After that, ANet hints in Twitter that Taimi is of age and is looking for love.

Change weapon while in combat?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

Sorca, something else to keep in mind, I believe it was you who mentioned wanting to swap to banners from solo? Banners should really be a thing you run all the time. Sure the unique buff is powerful to a party or group of allies, but it is also powerful solo. Not only that, you can somewhat negate your warhorn dilemma by picking up your own banner and using it to buff yourself with swiftness. And of course as you have now just recently mentioned, there is of course a trait that allows you a permanent speed boost. There are also Traveler’s Runes at later levels that can offer a permanent boost as well as some boon duration if you decided you wanted to use an alternate trait-line.

For traveling, Banner has a sad issue of a huge 30-second cooldown. That’s a huge dead space in the Swiftness uptime. (Please change that, ANet…)
And Discipline tends to get used both for Warrior’s Sprint and Fast Hands, especially with a weapon-swap rotation. If +25% movement is sufficient, it frees up weapon and rune choices.

Do you complain on every gw thread out there? You must have a really boring life… what fake advertisement are you even talking about? Did GW says we are going to Cantha, Elona, Crystal Desert?? no……

Some people have nothing better to do than complain about games they no longer play. Such a weird vendetta. :\

Why? Then people wouldn’t do Dragon Stand. I do think getting more ore from mithril would be useful.

If that’s the concern, then I’d be okay with #3 getting implemented. It’s stupid to wait two hours, squad, DIE, and pray the megaserver keeps you with the squad before being allowed to actually play the map.

That’d require a huge rework, and a way to ensure rewards don’t go to leechers, like with AB multiloot.

Then all those oil/dust/energy items could just be turned into their appropriate currency dealers in exchange for parts/aurilium/crystals, which can then be turned into machetes for opening pods during the Dragon Stand runs.

for some backpieces it would be pointless though. Like SAB ones, which defeats the purpose of doing the achievements to get the specific colored one. If they ever did implement it, then they would have to be specific on which ones they allowed to be dyeable.

I’d be okay with some backpacks not being dyable. It’s the ones that double as wings that really need the dye channels. Like the Shining Blade pack/wings or the newest released ones.

I considered getting the current backpack/wings and justifying the color change as some sort of energizing/power-up effect. I’unno. I’d rather ANet implement the dye channels so these back/wing items are coherent.

The Charr was an interesting one… I couldn’t think of any real world cultures that they reflect. So I ran around looking at the names of the more notable Charr… That honestly didn’t help me one bit… I don’t really remember how I ended up with the name I did on her in the end, but I wound up with a Charr Engineer named Myrar

In case you’re in the market for another lovable murdercat:
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Charr#Names

The names are mostly rough and/or Latin in origin, to match their war-oriented military structure, similar to the Romans. The warband is the core of their social groups, and their surnames have a common root word (ie, Thunder, Steel, Shadow), paired with a descriptor of their personality (Thundersnarl, Steelbane, Swiftshadow).

I’d search for guilds that do RP.

Edit: I found the following website. Checking there may be a good start.

http://www.guildwars2roleplayers.com/forum/m/2737230/viewforum/1265348?set-browser-type=web

Edit2: The region the servers are in matter. Players on NA servers cannot play with players on EU servers.

Servers only matter in that the system will give some preference to players on the same server. It might influence which shard a person ends up on and whether or not he’s likely to run into random RPers.

But it’s not a huge issue, and I believe it gives stronger preferences to people on your friends list or in your guild. So like the advice above, find an RP guild, then friend the ones you like.

Finally, I want to see those two charr scrappers from the charr “loyal soldier” storyline. I don’t recall their names, but it’s the one where one of them is terrified of ghost cows.

Too many humans. Guess we have to ditch a few. Bye, Kasjory~ I’d readily take Riot Alice. Maybe Lord Faren too, though he seems to have more fun being injected into random open-world stuff. :P

But yeah, Caithe and Braham need their own guild called I Do What I Want. They can go be rogue elements together. Of course, we’d need a new Norn and Sylvari. Because I really don’t want Canach, and he wants his freedom. Problem is, there aren’t really any well-developed Norn or Sylvari. . .

I have a mesmer (human female) named Scarlet the Tease. This was before Ceara/Scarlet became a thing, so I had it first! I refuse to change it, no matter how much the usurper is reviled.

I’d rather be associated with Scarlet than Caithe. You knew Scarlet was up to no good. Caithe on the other hand… As the former pack commander I still don’t trust her.

I’m still waiting for my chance to plant my flag in another bush, if ya ken.

Mounts [merged]

I’m primarily against mounts because they just look ridiculous (referencing WoW) and they add screen clutter. This can make it even more difficult to see stuff on top of the excessive special effects from abilities as well as adding onto CPU load.

On the one hand, I agree. I wouldn’t mind some lore-appropriate, badkitten looking mounts, but I fear it will be more “floating crystals and screechy noises” than a sleek, regal beast.

On the other, The Dreamer still exists and refuses to die. I don’t have faith that ANet will seek to reduce nuisance in this regard.

There’s also a ton of waypoints

Core Tyria has plenty of waypoints, and except for Orr, they’re mostly active. A closed waypoint is still useless. The newer maps are moving away from having the same waypoint density, and I expect that trend to continue into the expansion and living story maps. That most certainly leaves a little wiggle room for mounts. I’m not demanding it, but I can see the devs shifting design to accommodate it.

Where HoT was stacked high to make use of gliding, expect the Xpac zones to be very wide to make the most of mounts.

along with movement speed that can be obtained with traits, abilities/skills, and consumables.

I will be very, very glad if the mount masteries eventually get released for the rest of open world. I’m well beyond done with having to lock in traits and skills to reach objectives or events. We’ll see a lot more build variety once certain “required” build elements are no longer required.

I could see mounts working but only for maps designed specifically for them and to perform specific functions. Like how in GW1, the sandwurms were used to travel across specific portions of the Desolation and the siege devoured was used as a method to deal a lot of AoE damage at the expense of speed. They shouldn’t provide swiftness of any kind.

Tl;dr; If added, they should be used on maps specifically designed for them to handle specific challenges rather than used throughout the entire game.

I suspect this is the route the Xpac will take. Different mounts for different situations, possibly a different one for each map. I worry that it will be more of ANet’s pattern of “gimmick” gameplay (ie, not letting players use their own skills and traits), but hopefully they’ll be useful for mobility as well as their gimmick-combat.

Why Japanese? Too much anime, that’s why.

At least you admit it. XD

Side Note: Kyudo was originally name Caith which is an Irish name that means battlefield or “from the battlefield” . I have used Caith for characters since my D&D days in the 80’s. When I created the character in gw2 I wasn’t aware of the Sylvari Caithe. I hung onto the name for almost two years, I’d used it first after all! But after he became my main I knew it was time to change it.

[Suggestion] Side "wheel" for the UI

If they go to the trouble of implementing something like this, I hope it would be customizable. So you can choose it to display minis, outfits, consumables, titles, or whatever.

Not everyone changes minis or outfits enough to want something like this. But if they provide enough choices, then it could be beneficial.

Admittedly, it’d be nice to consolidate some of the tabs into a “Flair” tab:
• Mini – On/Off button
• Outfit – On/Off button
• Glider Skin
• Finisher – Random On/Off
• [Mounts?]

I just hit on a UI inspiration from this.

Hit a keybind button, get a custom radial window that acts as a quick-access shortcut to frequently-used tabs. So instead of Hero window, sub menu, minis, click mini (and the little tiny box that should be much bigger or a separate UI element), it could be Radial Menu, mouseover to minis to open menu, select mini.

[Suggestion] Attaining Crystalline Ore

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

In general, GW2 is pretty good about giving alternate paths to attain resources. PvP/WvW reward tracks give currencies that would normally be available only through PvE/dungeons. While PvP is not my thing, that’s a pretty cool thing for those who focus on it. Even the HoT maps have:
•Verdant Brink Reward Track
•Auric Basin Reward Track
•Tangled Depths Reward Track
•Heart of Maguuma Reward Track

“Heart of Maguuma Reward Track? Spiffy!” I thought as I searched the list. But apparently Dragon Stand not its currency is not a part of Maguuma. Sad-face.

Point being, the only way to get Crystalline Ore is through Dragon Stand.
Fun map, but actually getting into it is a painful chore for PvE enthusiasts, so I can’t imagine how that’d be fun for PvP/WvW folks.

So, I’ve been pondering alternative methods, and one of those was simply to have a reward track that includes a Noxious Cache as a container that mimics the drops for the Noxious Pods, with the 8th cache bearing a larger ore payout.
It’d be friendlier to the players in general and give PvP/WvW players a way to get the material that isn’t so mind-numbing.

The Mystic Forge is another relatively-easy implementation. There are some HoT materials that are gathered too easily but have limited purpose, so I’m thinking something like:
•100 Bottle of Airship Oil
•100 Pile of Auric Dust
•100 Ley Line Spark
•20 Mystic Crystal (Basically 12 Spirit Shards or use some Elonian Wine or whatever to add to the cost)
yields 10-20 Crystalline Ore.
(Maybe a rare chance of 30-50? Getting that notion from Noxious Pods giving 1, 3, 10, or 14, but that’s not necessary to emulate.)

I’d even consider 250 Oil+Dust+Spark and a Gift of Gliding for 100 Crystalline Ore to be a manageable recipe.

Main reason behind the idea is to get rid of those overabundant materials (including Spirit Shards) and loosen the yoke on Crystalline Ore.

Or, y’know, make it easier to get into an active map by removing Dragon Stand off the timer, so the One Sacred Map isn’t so coveted, and the Megaserver can do its thing naturally. (Basically, don’t start the timers until the camps are full.) Not exactly the easiest option, but it would make the map incredibly more playable. Which means more Machetes/Noxious Pods (and more fun), which means more Crystalline Ore.

The tl;dr – Make Crystalline Ore more available by:

  • PvP/WvW Reward Tracks
  • Mystic Forge, while giving a sink for Airship Oil, Auric Dust, and Ley Line Sparks
  • Take Dragon Stand off the timer

Redoing the User Interface on the Black Lion Market Thingy was both a waste of time and resources that could of been put into adding a ANTI-DDOS routine on your server(s).

PS. Add Custom User Interface scalability and freedom to move any UI object anywhere on the screen.

…because UI designers are experts at security for something that might not even be related to the company?

Anyway…

Said my piece about the gem-to-gold ripoff, but overall, the new interface is decent. Better preview options, less category clutter so it’s a little easier to find things. If there’s a search function, I didn’t check, because the amount of items currently in stock is decent enough, and the two-column scan makes it easier to see what’s available.

PvP stats for PvE

Will be the PvP exclusive attributes be implemented in PvE?

No. No they won’t.

Of course! But maybe..

With a new expansion coming, if they keep up this pattern of a new stat set for every map, odds are almost good that we’ll see some of the PvP attributes.

can’t figure out how to ride a horse?

How does one figure out how to ride an animal that doesn’t exist?

Humans in the real world have produced airships, spaceships, submarines, helicopters, etc, etc, etc…

and yet have not mastered the art of riding gryphons…

My guildmaster would love gryphon riding. Like, really love it. Like, SQUEE into Discord love it. :p

But have you seen gryphons? Sure, they float for a bit, but hit them and they randomly fall down. Not good for mounts.

Charr helicopter, though… <3
I’d at least like to have one of their bikes.

I noticed a big advertising splat for the gold conversion rate. Nifty.

…Except that the interface for gems→gold is still the same, where rounding error robs paying players of the gold they deserve. That’s really shoddy, ANet, and it needs to be fixed.

Sell that hoarded overstock while you can, flippers!

It’s a nice short-term shock, but does anyone have initial data on the estimated new drop rate?

People claiming 50%.

Probably too soon to hope for the “salvaged 200 hides” posts yet. But if 50% holds, that’s a huge change over the ~8% from before. I might even go join the farm next time I need leather.

Significantly increased the chance that Bloodstone-Warped Hides may be salvaged into Hardened Leather.

Or let them be sold to vendors for a nominal amount of copper.

Easiest solution. +1

Granted, I’d love to be able to turn those materials in for the regional currency. Leyline sparks into crystals, etc.

Or, and I’d love this too, convert a 250 stack of each + some spirit shard material into the Forge and get 10-20 Crystalline Ore. C-ore has a frustratingly bad rate of acquisition and it’d be fantastic to have a secondary method for all the ore that’s needed for runes/legendaries/etc.
