Level cap: if increased, what are the impacts?

By playing you help the company make money simply by populating the world. People will pay money if the game seems populated and healthy.

I think this is theory, not fact, but admit that its possible.

How’s this, then: I won’t play during the free trial weekend, and suggest that others not impressed by how Jon, Johnathan, and the rest of the gang respond to feedback, all do the same.

All the arguments here against level cap increase were the same ones raised during the introduction of Ascended gear. By some of the same people. You’re still playing.

I’m not paying a subscription fee. I can’t vote with my wallet on Ascended gear.

However, I do not have to buy an expansion pack that raises the level cap.

If someone says they’re going to punch me in the face, I’m going to be very vocal about the fact that I don’t want to be punched in the face.

If they do it anyway, then I’m not going to associate with that person any more, as they have little regard for my feedback.

Per Anet the “end-game” is and always has been Dynamic Events

I go to upper level zones and guess what I don’t see.

The player base actively pursuing these DE.

Just last night I was in Frostgorge Sound and there were DEs going on left and right. Some I could do on my own, but many I could not.

This is how Anet designed it. These DEs at this level are suppose to be done with groups of people.

That s why since the first of this year I have been saying there needed to be DE raid groups formed daily.

The only people that can go around saying there is nothing to do in this game ae those very people that say it.

again —-— DYNAMIC EVENTS ARE THE END GAME ………. PERIOD

Do them or shutup

Maybe they should have learned their lesson from WAR and Rift and made them an actually ORGANIC, DYNAMIC SYSTEM, and not just a repeatable quest on an unpredictable spawn timer.

Adding more levels in a new area will allow for you to progress through it

I see no reason whatsoever why progression through a new area has to be tied to level progression.

and enjoy new story content.

I don’t see any correlation between an increased level cap and my ability to enjoy new story content.

It is the same as levelling in any point in the game. The levelling slows down your pace through the content, which allows you to move at the intended rate.

I don’t play B2P games to have my pace manipulated by external forces. I quit Pandaland and came back here for that reason.

If they raise the level cap they will have truly abandoned the idea of this game being a Guild Wars sequel.

I did not play gw1 so I can assume they only made expansions for it without cap increases?

Correct . GW 1 has never raised its cap past 20 ( yes 20 ) and it did pretty well for itself. I should hope they never raise the cap past 80 in GW2

There are fundamental differences in GW1 to GW2 that made that possible. For example, skill progression.

Adding more levels in a new area will allow for you to progress through it and enjoy new story content. The levelling can help pace you through the area, so that the new content can be experienced a rate intended by the dev’s. It can also help with adding challenging personal story content.

There’s already a level scaling system though. If they add a level 1-15 area, I can take my 80 there and enjoy it.

Also, one thing the Manifesto promises is a “branching” personal story. When in truth, you always return to the same trunk. Maybe, instead of forming the Pact with Trahearne, you decide your talents would be better applied in the new lands. Or you’re from the new lands, and decide to join Trahearne, because you’re weird.

and here you’re reversing the roles.
both Berserker and MF gear is gear that is very hard to use, because you’re sacrificing vitality and toughness. If a person manages to survive with it instead of sitting on the ground they are not a bad player.
Snowflake situation was an obvious exploit, not something that you figure out as a game mechanic.

“Zerging” can refer to many things that normalize the skill and specialties of an individual across a faceless mass. The favored tactic in WvWvW, or the rush that surrounds any noteworthy world event.

As for Berserker gear, toughness and vitality don’t mitigate as much damage as Berserker gear enables, thus the opportunity cost is great NOT to wear Berserker’s.

most berserker players sit on their floor on their kitten though. In order to use that gear properly you have to be really good. Or just use a toughness/ vitality safety net.

So much damage avoidance is based on movement though, because you can only take so many hits in high-end PvE. Full PVT only gives you one or two extra hits.

If you can’t beat Metal Slug 3 on a single credit, one extra life won’t make a difference.

RebelYell.7132

I think “end game” shouldn’t apply to MMORPG, because the term implies attrition. It makes sense in Chess, where you’re constantly losing pieces on both sides, or DotA, where towers get destroyed and players begin to snowball by hitting high levels and attaining powerful equipment. It has very little applicability to the post-WoW MMORPG genre.

[[Casual Players]] My Issue with GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: RebelYell.7132

RebelYell.7132

The problem with this game is that it does not cater to “casual gamers,” but it caters to BAD and unskilled gamers.

It rewards bad and unskilled play (zerging, using MF gear, etc.) and punishes good and efficient play by anet literally banning good players who figure out the system (Snowflakes situation etc.)

Because of anet’s decision to cater to BAD players, not casual players, everything has just been reduced to a terrible grind.

Thus, instead of a situation as in GW1, where skill was the biggest deciding factor in how far a player got (at least in the beginning,) in order to cater to the lowest common denominator, the bad players, its been watered down to where time spent in-game is the biggest deciding factor in how far a player gets.

So in order to be considered a “good player” you have to discover and take advantage of a game exploit.

That’s interesting logic you got going there.

When you declare what someone else’s logic is you’re doing this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_man

Have you ever wondered why it’s called HOLY TRINITY?
Has anyone ever tried reinventing a wheel?

I agree, I may get boring, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not working perfectly.

Well, one philosophy I’ve taken from City of Heroes is that you can use the trinity to create an infinite variety of roles, with the expanded idea that:
1) An enemy prevented from acting through control is an enemy tanked
2) Damage prevented through buffs and debuffs is damage healed
3) Damage increased through buffs and debuffs is damage dealt

This is why, when Arenanet spoke of a “damage/control/support” trinity, I thought it might actually work. And then Defiance was introduced. And then the differential on Healing Power was made infinitesimal for anything but the #6 skill.

Ignore the trinity. Why not 1) Frontline 2) Midline 3) Backline. As in GW1’s PvP.
Never mind, with the current system that would never work.
Everyone’s a DPS till the end of GW2.

That’s why I frequent these trinity threads. Not because I want tanks and healers. I want definitive roles that aren’t “do nothing cool until we need you for Time Warp, Feedback, Temporal Curtain, or Portal”.

People seem to demonize all specialization systems for whatever reason, though. I guess it was so horrible having to tab out when queued as damage in the Dungeon Finder that all games have to be punished for it.

nope, it’s just that most people are bored of clones of clones of clones. The same system was in there since everquest. They want something new. This game offers something new, yet you seem to want that taken away from us.

Everquest had the trinity? News to me. I thought it had mezzers, nukers, and buff twisters in addition to the more famous roles.

There are many reasons to be subjectively contented with a subpar profession. Maybe you have godlike reaction times, so that you never get downed when others do. Maybe you have four friends willing to carry you through anything. Maybe you’re the one that’s always happy to use a bundle item required for an encounter instead of using the skills you rolled that profession for.

Combat log parsers don’t lie, though. If you’re not pulling your share of the workload in terms of damage output or boon uptime, there’s one way to find out.

Even a bosskill video for World of Warcraft on Heigan the Unclean will suffice. Tell me how many people you see there “standing still and doing their rotation” for longer than a minute.

I would rather it would not go to trinity. Ever. You can still heal as a heal dedicated character and you can still tank just fine using your utility blocks, dodges and piling toughness on yourself. I like not being forced into a role.

Toughness scales poorly, endurance runs out quickly if you like to dodge, and all blocks are associated with significant cooldowns rather than passives :[

you don’t dodge at random, you time your dodges, yes, there’s cooldowns, that’s why you use your abilities in an intelligent manner instead of spamming them. It also helps to learn the bosses mechanics so you would know when to dodge, when to block, etc.

Problem with that is that crits from a bigger mob can land you in just as much trouble as their dodge-or-die attacks. Never mind that it is not always easy to spot the tells through the fog of particles that can form around a mobs, especially if there are a couple of elementalists around.

sorry to tell you, but I think that you should play more to become more familiar with mob mechanics, because me and my boyfriend can get by without dodging at random.

You can say L2P all you like but that won’t turn this game into Dark Souls.

Instead they made a system where every player has a somewhat more equal role. Where you need actively dodge to avoid damage. And where every class can heal itself.
This makes the playerr more responsible and also makes combat more active.

What this does, is make it so no one can do anything unique. Everyone is measured up in (a) DPS (b) the ability to fill in missing boons.

Dungeons don’t use mechanics that encourage synergy. If the enemies didn’t have increased HP and damage, it’d be no different than soloing in the open world. The one exception of course is encounters that force some players to pick up bundles or man static emplacements… thus denying them the one thing that makes them unique, their weapon skills.

This, exactly.

And even those weapon skills aren’t all that unique, when you look at them hard enough.

A Mesmer plays the same as a Ranger? A thief plays the same as a necro? A guardian plays the same as an engineer?

You talk about uniqueness and yet you want the game to go down the exact same path as every other mmo that has ever existed.

You want “lfg fotm, tank and heals!” incessantly in LA chat?

What you seem to be asking for is a carbon copy WoW game with Tyria skins. Forget it. Anet knows all to well that if they went down that path people would simply switch back to their old mmos.

Start a poll thread and ask how many players want the trinity in GW2. You will find you are in the minority, because many (if not most) people are here for the lack of trinity uniqueness the GW2 offers, even if it also causes a few other problems.

You say “you want” a lot, and then start reciting stuff never actually said by the posts you quoted. That’s a pretty stark example of a strawman argument.

Me, I’m just waiting for ideas like “Engineers play the Engineer role, not the tank, healing, or damage dealer role” to have some game mechanics behind them, not just PR.
