State of Each Class

RedDeadFred.1256

All my opinions and may be misinformed due to lack of knowledge on several professions:

Warrior -In PvE, it’s in a pretty great spot. What’s not so great, is that the Elite spec didn’t really alter how you play Warrior unless you’re using conditions to cheese big hitboxes. It just made the old PS Warrior even better. For me, it feels like many other classes got exciting new toys while we just got to be slightly better at what we already did. This lack of viable new options is what caused me to change my main to Revenant.
-For general open world PvE and story missions, Warrior is still one of if not the easiest class to do content solo. Just keep in mind that the new content is harder so you’ll probably die a bit at first if you’re just running glass cannon.
-For Fractals, PS Warrior is still a great addition to the party. Not sure about the new higher levels because I’ve simply gotten bored, but from what I’ve heard, level 100 is not even that much harder than the old level 50 while the current level 50 is a piece of cake.
-Raids are basically the same as with fractals for Warriors but you have the added benefit of going condi to cheese large hitboxes with your longbow primal burst.
-In PvP Warrior is hands down the worst class in the game. I don’t really think it’s even close. Compared to other classes, our damage mitigation is pathetically low. We do have some high damaging skills, but they’re all extremely highly telegraphed. Even if we do manage to land some hits, the tanky meta means that we’re probably not going to get a kill anyway.

Revenant -In PvE, Revenant is in a great spot. It provides great support through boons, does extremely high damage, and has excellent breakbar damage. It also has excellent mobility, decent damage mitigation, and, if timed right, great healing.
-For raids, you’re going to be primarily there to deal huge amounts of damage and break break bars quickly. Same goes for Fractals.
-For solo content and general open world PvE, Revenant does very well since you can usually kill stuff before it has a chance to do much to you. You also have a fairly strong (and in my opinion, one of the best designed) ranged weapon with the hammer. Perma swiftness for getting around the map quickly while also having some low cd teleports makes Rev one of the best classes for open world.
-In PvP, Revenant is in a great spot with having a very strong condi build, and reasonably strong other options. Revenant has access to a ton of damage mitigation allowing you to survive on a low life total while dishing out a constant stream of condis.

Mesmer -It’s tough to say where Mesmer will be after the upcoming nerf to alacrity, but I believe they’ll still be considered an essential part of a raid composition. Their ability to grant tons of quickness and alacrity while also tanking makes them probably the best supportive class in the game.
-In fractals, I imagine the roll is still to provide reflects, quickness, and now alacrity. Still in a great spot.
-Open world and story stuff has always been kind of annoying for Mesmer since you’re generally slower and don’t have very high damage compared to other professions. Chronomancer definitely helps with a lot of these issues, so it’s not as noticeable as it once was.
-In PvP, Mesmer has had the unfortunate privilege of being the least used class. This means that people tend to whine about it a lot more and Anet tends to listen. Condi is no longer viable at all, shatter is not nearly as good as other builds, and that leave the Mesmer players with quite possibly the most annoying build in quite some time. The Bunker Chrono. Do you like having teamfights take an eternity? Do you like being able to just sit on a point and have your enemies simply walk away because the time to fight you is not even remotely worth it? If you answered yes, you’ll love Bunker Chrono! Admittedly, it’s not nearly as bad as when you could make your entire team invulnerable on top of a point while still capturing it.

Here’s where my knowledge of other professions tends to plummet:

Elementalist -In PvE, they’re in a pretty solid spot, but they’re less important in raids compared to other professions due to bosses moving out of their AOEs. They can perform reasonably well as tanks, healers, and damage dealers. Also, Ice Bow isn’t as ludicrous as it once was.
-In PvP, they’re still quite strong. Lots of damage, lots of sustain, and diamond skin is one of the most annoying traits in existence (though, it’s being changed).

Guardian -In PvE, Dragon Hunter is pretty strong. It can be used fairly well as either a tank, or a ranged damage dealer. Not as good at these things as other professions, but still in a fine spot.
-In PvP, they’re also in a good spot. While maybe not as strong as some of the best professions, they absolutely destroy bad players. They have tons of CC and traps that punish mistakes. High damage, and good point control.

Necromancer -In PvE, the Reaper has brought Necro back into a good place. They can deal high damage as either a condi or power build, and are still perhaps the best solo class in the game. Their damage isn’t as high as other classes, so they’re not usually people’s go to options for raiding, but they’re still good enough that that shouldn’t matter.
-In PvP, Reaper is capable of dealing a lot of AOE damage. They take a long time to kill, and if you can’t deal with condis, they’ll annihilate you with a bomb of them.

Ranger -In PvE, Druid is the go to healer for raiding. That’s about all I know…
-In PvP, Druid is good at fighting over points since they can heal a lot while still dealing decent damage.

Engineer -For PvE, unless you’re abusing giant hitboxes with Berserker, Engie is hands down the best condi class. They’re probably the hardest class to play.
-In PvP, Scrapper is in an excellent spot. Huge amounts of defensive capabilities, a good amount of utility (they have stealth now), and great damage to boot all combine to make them one of the strongest classes in the game.

Thief -In PvE, Thief just isn’t the damage king that it once was. There are very few things that they do better than other classes, and those things can be done well enough by others that Thief just isn’t as essential as it once was. They’re by no means a bad class since they can still be used in raiding and achieve success, they’re just comparatively “meh” right now.
-In PvP, Thief is in a similar spot to how they’ve been for quite a while. You don’t get in fights, because if your of equal skill to your opponent, you’re probably going to lose. Instead, you use your superior mobility to run around getting decaps and taking advantageous plus ones. Despite having their uses, Thief is probably second to Warrior in worst in PvP (though, I’d still say it’s light years ahead of Warrior).

Hope that helped and I hope you enjoy your return to the game!

Sorry OP, but the wings are for the people who actually LIKE playing a lot of PvP and are at least decent at it. It’s a legendary backpiece, I don’t know why you’d expect it to be easy.

Edit: and just to let you know, I play PvE quite a bit more than I play PvP. I like the idea of having an item that shows you’re actually pretty good at the game. So many of the items in this game just show that you’ve simply played a lot and amassed a good amount of gold. Having unique items in raids and PvP is a big step in the right direction.

Dragonhunter Talk

RedDeadFred.1256

Bunker Chrono easily counters them in a team fight. Your cc isn’t much good when you’re not even hitting the enemy team since the Chrono stacked those kitten wells.

Better yet, play Viper Revenant and beat almost any class in the game. Dragon Hunters are almost as easy to kill with Rev as Thieves.

People complain about it because it’s not fun to lose against them. All anyone remembers are the times when they got pingponged around during a teamfight between multiple traps. Not only that, it’s one of the easier classes to play (haven’t played it myself, other people just seem to complain about the low skill ceiling a lot) so those players are generally more effective with their builds than other players are with their own.

Can you seriously say DH is OP when the best team comps from todays ESL matches were 2 Bunker Chronos, 2 Viper Heralds, and usually 1 Tempest (taken directly from the other thread from one of the players)?

I thought they were OP at first too, but they actually feel like one of the weaker specs now. I’d rather have a Chrono, Scrapper, Druid, Tempest, or Revenant on my team before a DH. They’re still waaay ahead of Warrior and Thief though and probably on par with Reaper.

Don’t use pain absorbtion. It’s a huge energy cost. You can gain permanent resistance simply by spamming your elite skill on and off. Use mace 2 and axe 5 often, while also using banishenchantment to give even more condis while removing boons.

It’s probably the strongest build in the game, but it’s a bit more involved than some other builds. Also, don’t use your Mallyx heal early and make sure you’ve got resistance against any poison on you when you do use it.

I would almost never use pain absorption unless you’re about to take a lot of cc (which you should be dodging and getting stab against, but even then, sometimes it’s too much) and you won’t be able to get another demon skill off before the traited resistance wears off.

you can’t play a profession based on how strong it is.
if you like it, play it. balance will happen

Yes you can, that’s how you win games by countering the enemy comp or playing OP professions. Revenant counters everything right now, easily the strongest profession in the game. By your logic, balance should have happened for Warriors but where is it?

Wanna bet rev doesnt counter everything as you say?

Please name something that mallyx/shiro or glint/shiro doesn’t beat.

Mallyx/Shiro? DD, Druid, Scrapper and tempest will take too long to even bother, Chrono

Glint/Shiro? Condi stuff (reaper, chrono, druid, even burn guard). DD is tough matchup as well

Sorry dude, but as a mallyx rev I’ve never had a problem with any of those builds. Scrapper and chrono goes down to condi quickly, same with tempest after diamond skin is broken which is easy to do with viper amulet. Druid will eventually die to condis unless they are bunker at which point it’s a stalemate. Daredevil is easy to kill by simply double swapping all 4 of your sigils in melee range along with the mallyx elite.

As for power rev, yes they are weak to condis, but with their crazy access to evades, blocks, and full heals, any good revenant will avoid most of it while outputting an insane amount of damage.

It’s possible that you’re just better than a lot of people. I know they say they aim for 50% winrate, but there’s no way that’s the case when your division is factoring into 50% of your matchmaking.

If the Tempest is good, they will make breaking their Diamond skin very difficult. I think it’s the one class that, if played well, will probably fully counter Mallyx Herald. Other classes that bunker are more often stalemates and not worth your time.

Power Shiro is pretty easy to counter by consistent condi preassure and large amounts of health (Reapers). Having said all that, I do think we have the strongest class in PvP right now, and we do need a bit of a toning down. Not any big nerfs mind you, maybe some adjustments on energy costs in Mallyx. I’d rather them look at our mechanic before looking at numbers and cd’s.

RedDeadFred.1256

While a do think Mallyx rev is the strongest build in the game right now (it does have counters though), I think we’re actually in a fairly decent state for balance right now. I’d focus on buffing thieves (ya their mobility is amazing, but they’re almost useless in fights) and warriors (easily the worst PvP class in the game) before looking at nerfing others.

When are they gonna fix Revenant?

in Revenant

Posted by: RedDeadFred.1256

RedDeadFred.1256

I have an 80% winrate with Rev in pvp ever since the leagues started. We are probably the strongest class in the game right now. This is a L2P issue.

Don’t play into the DH traps. If you get trapped in Dragon’s Maw (the one that holds you in), don’t try to dodge through it. Just wait it out, with your shield 5 and glint heal (since you’re doing power shiro, I assume you’re taking glint).

As power shiro, you have multiple evade skills, two blocks (one from the trait) that heal, 2 heal skills (one of which can be activated even when being knocked about), and your dodges on top of that. Yes, you’re a glass cannon, but if you can’t use these skills to your advantage, it’s really more of a L2P issue.

For what it’s worth though, condi herald is better than power.

So....3-5 DH 4 games in a row?

in PvP

Posted by: RedDeadFred.1256

RedDeadFred.1256

I farm DH as condi rev, OP. Not sure where you’re going wrong, but I have to say, it’s one of the easier matchups for us. You’ve got dodges that grant stab, a longer evade that does dmg, a block that heals, another block that heals, a strong heal skill in Mallyx and all the while, you’re putting lots of condis on them.

Bait their traps, or simply dodge them. It’s a really easy fight once you get used to their abilities. You’ll probably find yourself facerolling them once you get more practice.

The only thing that’s infuriating about them is if you’re fighting two and they manage to get the venn diagram of death and no escape on you. If you haven’t burned your damage mitigation skills, you can simply wait this out, but if it happens to you in the middle of a teamfight, you’re probably dead.

Remove Pip loss

in PvP

Posted by: RedDeadFred.1256

RedDeadFred.1256

Pip loss is in essence a good idea: it gives some prestige (in theory) to reach the highest divisions.

The problem right now is that MMR is not taken into account at all when determining how many pips you win or lose. So, whether you’re good or bad, you have a 50/50 chance of winning your games (which is good), effectively preventing anyone (except top MMR players in a team) from reaching higher divisions.

A good fix (suggested by someone on the forums, and I think used in LoL) would be to lose and win pips partially based on your MMR. If you have a higher MMR than the average in your division, you will lose less pips from losing, and win more for winning, keeping the same match-making system, until you reach a division that contains players of your skill level.

Your mmr does affect how many pips you gain or lose. You also won’t be only winning 50% of your matches if you’re good. The only reason it was like that at first is because everyone started in the same division. Now that people are getting more spread out, in general, the worse players are still lower down while the better players have climbed. I have about an 80% winrate ever since the leagues were introduced ankitten ow in mid-sapphire.

The system is fine, it just sucks that they didn’t do placement matches and made everyone start at the same spot.

Too much condi spam, game is unplayable

in PvP

Posted by: RedDeadFred.1256

RedDeadFred.1256

Condition damage is more prevalent now because it’s easier to win with. Many players are just bad at fighting against it. There’s a reason you’re able to look at the other team’s players before the match starts. If you see a bunch of Necros (harder to tell with Revs since power is still quite good), maybe quickly swap some condi cleanse into your build.

Anyway, that’s why you’re seeing lots of it. Spamming conditions against bad players makes for easy kills.

New pvp system "review"

It is a fail. It’s identical to what we’d been doing before with just some new feature to grind for. They didn’t put effort into designing matchmaking around the new system, they just tried to shove this new system into the old model and called it done.

At this point, I’d love for a really in depth dev post to explain the design decisions behind this system because I really don’t understand how they thought this was a good idea.

You can do that, but it’s your own fault.

I swear from what I’ve been reading lately, people are equating grind with not having everything in the game instantly.

If you’re finding getting your masteries is a grind, then you’re either grinding CoF (which again, is your own fault), or you just hate the core gameplay of GW2. You’re welcome to hold that position, but why complain on the forums when you could just solve all of your issues by not playing anymore? If you’re playing the game just to get rewards, what’s the point of even playing? What is the point of getting some shiny new item if you don’t even enjoy playing the game?

The problem is that was a warrior you have to work twice as hard to do constant damage and survive than any other class.

It seems like you have never played anything else but warrior. Any class is hard to master, but warriors are one of the easiest to master.

This is true for PvE, but I’d say it’s the complete opposite for PvP. It is however, very easy to kill an incompetent player with them (as in, the kind of player who tries to fight a Rampaging warrior in melee or allows themselves to be hit by the hugely telegraphed cc’s). What we do is very straightforward, but that makes it very easy for a competent player to counter it.

Any comments?

How against new necro with permochiling and mesmers with condies?=)
And sigils has chense of trigger, some only at crits.

Sigils triggering on crits is not an issue at all for Revenants since we usually have around a 90% crit chance. We get 40% crit chance from fury and we can keep fury up pretty reliably.

I agree that we’re weaker against conditions than other classes, but I think that’s important since we have lots of heals and invuln frames. Besides, it’s not like we have NO condi removal.

If they’re negating your damage with shield 5 after your rotation, that says a lot more about how much damage you’re actually putting out than how much they’re actually healing.

Post in map chat or LFG for Hero Points. I’ve done this for several of them and never had to wait that long. Honestly, usually you don’t even have to be the one to post. It’s fairly common to see parties in LFG asking for help with specific HP (the Caustic Itzel East of the Nobles is very common).

True for now, but later on when the hype dies off, people who didnt Exploited CoF to get masteries will be then able to reach the Mastery Locked Points, when no one else will be around.

Of course it is doable, but Anet should have beeen stick to the soloableness of the Map completion

The CoF exploit has absolutely nothing to do with the Heart of Thorns Hero Points…

However, you are right. It will probably be tougher to do in the future. Lucky for you, they’ve already nerfed some of them and in general, made getting them in Verdant Brink a lot easier. To be honest, with the time limits on the Champion enemies increased to 10 minutes, they MIGHT even be doable by yourself now, as long as you’re not building full glass canon. I doubt any of them can’t be done with just one other person.

Don’t get into the sky using the bounce, it bugs out a lot. Instead, use the bits of higher ground to quickly jump into the updrafts and immediately open your glider. This way you bypass the buggy jumping and go straight to gliding. It can be tough to spot which areas on the platform work for this, but they are there. If you hold jump, your glider will open at the apex of your jump if it’s available. That doesn’t seem to be common knowledge, but it makes getting into the updrafts much easier.

It’s a shame that the fight has so many bugs because the mechanics are quite fun.

Pretty much this, except for the living forgotten in Tarir part.

I expected us to take a detour after rescuing DE to go and stop anti-sylvari revolts in LA, to form new alliances with the Nightmare Court to rebuild the Pact, to question the Pale Tree on the revelation, to find out what’s so kitten important about the egg.

Instead, we get a rather straightforward and kill-all-main-characters storyline with too little screentime to our friends, too many Pact survivors for the so-called decimated Pact, and too fast of a revelation to how to kill Mordremoth (“Mordremoth is everywhere.” “So we’ll take the fight to his mind, inside the Dream!” – despite the fact that the Dream was stated to be protection against Mordremoth and not Mordremoth’s mind/domain as the final story instance says), and one hell of a cliffhanger with the egg.

I was expecting something more in the story.

The open world zones are great – mostly – and the mechanics are superb. But the story was short, I felt like the Pact got grounded and nothing more – too many camps of survivors – and it feels like all the bringing up of the Mordrem Guard and “sylvari are dragon minions” was 100% irrelevant to the actual plot. The Mordrem Guard felt no more smarter than the Orrian Risen.

Non-Mordrem Guard Mordrem are to the standard risen as the Mordrem Guard are to Orrian risen. Yet they were promoted as this “new thing for the Pact to face”. Their “fallen foes become their enemies” and “the sylvari can turn at any moment” yet I never got that later part. “The Mordrem Guard are not mindless” yet there was practically no conversation – except with Faolain, who actually looks like a corrupted sylvari unlike the Mordrem Guards or the three commanders who couldn’t possibly resemble their sylvari selfs.

And as complex and fun as the final fight was, it didn’t really feel like a fight against an Elder Dragon.

This isn’t to say it wasn’t bad. It was good, actually. Especially mechanics, voice acting, art, music, and individual story step writing. But as a while the story felt like a rush – and I wasn’t even rushing through mastery farming or the like. I was taking my time. It felt like we were just “okay onto the next thing” which the Personal Story had an issue with – once a chapter passed, we’re onto the next unrelated thing.

Overall:

It was good, but it didn’t live up to expectations set by ArenaNet. Again.

I agree with almost all of your issues with the story except for the relevance of Sylvari being dragon minions. Canach was a big reminder of this throughout the story and his struggle made me admire his character. By the end of the story, I actually felt more invested in his character than any of the others. Also, Trahearne being Sylvari was key for us to be able to defeat Mordremoth. I think they could have explored racism towards Sylvari a lot more though.

Also, I’m surprised you had such high expectations of the story. I’ve always liked the lore, but the stories themselves have been pretty universally bad IMO. While HoT story wasn’t anything special, I was actually pleasantly surprised. I’d love Anet to do a story thatisn’t so straightforward in the future, but I kind of doubt that’ll ever happen. Either they don’t want to put in the effort, simply can’t pull it off, think their player base is too dumb to handle it, or some combination of the three.

The Mouth of Mordremoth (HoT Spoilers)

It’s all up to personal interpretation, I think.

Since Mordremoth is basically everything/everywhere (meaning he could “be” whatever he wanted to), I’m choosing to believe that the Mouth of Mordremoth is in fact his chosen physical form in the world. What we fight in the dream was just his avatar, same as the Pale Tree’s avatar.

I think it makes sense. I mean, Mouth of Mordremoth is the biggest/baddest creature we see, AND it’s located right at his main base. The map is even called Dragon’s Stand. It’s gotta be him.

This is my interpretation as well. While is physical manifestation is the entire jungle, his draconic form it the mouth. Not only is it consuming ley energy (which is what he know Mordremoth has been doing since he woke up), Mordremoth himself is also taunting you throughout the fight.

I really like they way they chose to do this. From a gameplay perspective, it’s like we got to have our cake and eat it too. We get to fight the Elder Dragon in a full scale assault, but we also get to kill him for real on a more personal level.

Length in a story is a massively overvalued factor in RPGs.

It’s not so much that it was short, but that it introduced a bunch of plot elements but didn’t really go anywhere with most of them.

That’s very true. The ending cinematic reminded me about an entire thing that I thought would be important but ended up being a setup for more story at a later date.

Elite specs in PvP, with Tier List

3) On par with DDele: all other elite specs.

While I can’t speak for all Elite specs, saying that Berserker is on par with DD ele is ludicrous. Berserker is weaker than a normal warrior.

There are a lot of bugs. Unfortunately, if you don’t win on the first attempt, the fight becomes WAAAY harder/impossible depending on the bugs you get.

I also did the fight with a full zerker warrior. It’s much easier on the first attempt due to the fight being bugged, but it’s still doable even when he has all of his mechanics.

I’ve been running Dolyak Signet for the extra toughness and the stunbreaker as well as signet of stamina for the extra dodges and condi removal.

His physical attacks don’t actually do that much damage. Dodge his highly telegraphed move and you can mostly tank the rest. One thing you do absolutely have to watch out for is when he starting applying confusion. Just wait it out and don’t use skills, I prefer to save my signet of stamina for the more frequent dodges and for if I get too much torment on me. I’d also suggest switching to signet of healing since it allows you to tank his less damaging attacks and not burn dodges on them.

For the Blighted Illusions, kite them away from Mordremoth. I suggest making sure you have your longbow for the fight. All of the Illusions are susceptible to skill 5 and I think only Rytlock is immune to the blind.

Other tips include:
-Make use of the large area. If you’re feeling like you’re under too much pressure, run away! His ranged attacks aren’t very good so can just kite him around a lot of the time. You should save your survival skills for when he puts up his arena.
-You have to be very fast with your glider or else you can get stuck grounded.
-For dodging the rocks he throws at you, you can either quickly switch directions (doesn’t always work) or drop out of gliding to quickly dodge under them. Just make sure you have a nearby updraft so that you can stay up high. It gives you more time, and more space to work with.

You fight his physical, draconic manifestation at the end of the Dragon Stand meta event. Remember from the story where they say he’s concentrating most of his efforts on the fight outside allowing you to slip into his territory? Everyone is fighting what is called his Mouth. Remember, Mordremoth exists in the ENTIRE jungle. You can’t defeat him physically, but you can assault his mouth to stop him from feeding on ley-energy. That’s what the pact is doing while you are going in for the kill. It’s actually well done IMO. You still get the Elder Dragon fight in open world, but you kill him for real in the actual story. A billion times better than Zhaitan IMO.

Honestly, it’s a longer story than some AAA games. Not only that, the events are more story oriented in the expansion, so you get fun pieces of lore in a variety of places.

It could have been a tad longer, but I still think it blows the original story out of the water. It’s not great or anything, but it’s good enough IMO.
