Well put Red. Anytime I lose I look back and see what I could have done differently to win. Although the argument we will get here is “you’re permastealthed, we can’t see you”. I feel that’s complete bs… I’ve never engaged a thief that was 100% stealthed throughout the fight and I spend most of my time in wvw. I’d like to see video from the people like Columba and others who are posting in this thread of their own encounters with thieves so we all have a better idea of what’s happening.
I really wish that the people would bring up these thieves in pvp or even wvw if they go the lengths to use the report tool to figure out their names because kitten I want to know what THAT guy was doing because I don’t have that luck. Personally I think it’s a pride thing. People associate the weakest class defense with being incredibly easy to beat, so when we beat say a warrior then oh snap something isn’t right here. I think its inherently believed that if you see a thief that= a free kill (we have rangers for that : p). Like I said, people will only say something is fair if they are the victor. If they lost then the enemy clearly had some unbalanced class mechanic.
You know what I’ve even seen people do and complain about? Once in spvp I was immo’d and when someone ran up to me I CnD’d and he stopped, waited, I broke free killed him and called me a noob. Stealth does not mean I warped or entered a realm of gods in which I can spawn anywhere on the map and reign hell. Chances are, now everyone get close this is a big secret i want everyone to hear this….chances are, if you hit a thief with a crowd control and he doesn’t shadow step but instead goes into stealth
<.<

v.v
^.^
chances are, he’s still there gasp surely you cant just keep attacking that area no.
I cant tell you how many times people have downed me after ive went in stealth from like a shadow refuge and walked away letting me rez myself. Then they get angry and wonder wth I just did ….
one time i had a gs ranger almost kill me, I shad ref’d and he was literally staring me in the face! I was almost angry he didnt just swing and get me.

Infiltrators Arrow working like this is the coolest skill in the whole game.
It is a pity that it is so limited in PvE and WvW.
like i said it should stealth us for 15 seconds and do an aoe flame blast, with an inti. cost of four
Toss in an instant-stomp mechanic and I’m in.
why stop there? give back half our health( because full health would be op obviously)
D/D has it all
Damage, control, tank, healing, and tons of escape/engage abilities.
And if you get downed, by some miracle, you just Vapour Form back to your own zerg or into a keep. kittenol.
It reminds me of Bright Wizards in WAR; another game where casters are (or were, I guess) totally overpowered in melee.
You’re either ignorant or have serious l2p issues.
For some reason people in this game assume each and every D/D ele they run across uses the very same build they stigmatized as “D/D bunker”. Problem is, that’s not reality.
People run into a 0/10/0/30/30, full PVT + clerics D/D Ele. That guy can take alot of punishment (his damage output is pathetic tho), and escapes 5 people chasing him. -> “OMG D/D SO TANKY!”
Then people run into a D/D that uses 0/20/0/20/30 or w/e, lots of knights/valkyries, maybe even some zerker in there. That guy delivers quite some burst and DPS -> “OMG D/D SO MUCH DAMAGE!”.
And then they come to the following conclusion: “OMG D/D SO TANKY & D/D SO MUCH DAMAGE!”. This is nonsense tho, because basically, these have been 2 different builds.
this is the same problem thieves suffer from!
It’s called Indiscriminate Killer. All white creatures fall under this category.
yeah but this stops after 1000 i think
i wonder how many of the complainers are those who see a thief running toward them, see the basilisk venom buff by their health, do nothing to avoid being petrified, get bursted and complain about how op we are. i shake my head at those who are so quick to say how op thieves are or how stealth is so op. you want to know what i think is op? coming from a thief? Crowd control like crippled chilled immo’d you name it. If im immo’d in a zerg, thats game right there. You want to know why i disengage? because what you guys were doing to try and kill me, it was working. so, keep doing it. want to know why i reengage? because after i dissapeared you guys thought that i was gone and cleverly turned your backs and proceeded to run away. honestly when people do this they should have a consumable item that when double clicked puts giant bold lettering over your head saying Please Backstab Me!
and if youre roaming and you get killed be a roaming thief, honestly what else do you expect? at this point youre in their territory which is most likely a wide open area. people throw the term “fair” around like nothing. what is fair? if you consider fair to be when both sides have an equal chance of winning and losing, then from my experiences, a lot of fights were fair. if you get killed in 1v1 by a thief approaching you head on then in my eyes, thats a fair fight. its not about being fair people just want to win. none of the thief haters want a fair fight, they want a fight that gives them a high chance of winning. i will admit being bursted from behind with BV can be rough, but other than that, there hasnt been a fight that when i lost i havent looked back and thought of something i couldve done differently.
Who here wants a rabbit kill counter? I think it would be a nice passive thing to count, especially since i use these things to stealth in WvW. But I mean honestly all of you have killed those rabbits that were in your path to your next goal, we all have done it, and im curious as to how many ive killed…
there needs to be a rabbit kill counter, thats all i want….you know besides other things
I dunno once you role sos for awhile and you take it off you feel….sluggish and not right. SR is just addicting, lately people havent even attempted to hit me out of it and when they go in its fun to run around the edge to wait for it to go away. Shadow step is something i shouldnt have to explain. I wish sos had another active instead of blinding though. I already blind whenever I go into stealth, and if i want to blind so much, why not use smokescreen or blackpowder? we already have too many blinds >.<

yeah its duelist, my thief wears it
so wait, you won 2/3 of the fights, and you are complaining that you need help fighting mesmers?
seems to me that he should be here asking advice, rather than you lol
ha i had to retreat a couple times. I was here for less self destructive ways to take these guys on. Those fights were by no means easy XD kitten moas…..
And thanks for the info Pyroatheist and Crossplay, will keep that in mind. I still need to learn that not all battles can be won so I may stay away from these guys lol
EDIT: Pyroatheist, the aoe was just a plain circle with slight purple lighting coming from it, she cast it when she had staff out. It didnt do much besides confusion and minor damage but that not much adds up over time
(edited by RedSpectrum.1975)
i mean im not saying going stealth isnt a bad idea, but it gives another area for people to complain about our apparent overpowerdness i mean after all

hmm raising the initiative would be pointless. on standard init builds, it already uses half of your total init. What should happen is that a great range increase followed by 15 seconds of stealth and an aoe fire blast.
on topic, they could increase its range a bit and widen the aoe blind but thats all i really see it for. it is called infiltrators arrow for a reason. i respect your opinion though
Black Lion 100%. Yeah its expensive and only has 25 uses, but for a 70+ rare I usually get at least and ecto other times will be 2 or 3, uncommon for me to get none.
Now I am a stealth heavy thief, not glass cannon, but stealth heavy nonetheless with daggers.
Your build is probably the issue. Don’t run “stealth heavy” with d/d. With that set you gotta go full gank. Those strange hybrid builds are always very easy to defeat as mesmer because they can neither take or deal damage.
If you want to spam stealth, go either p/d or s/d.
Its not hybrid, it’s a legitimate build. I mean, damaging the mesmer wasn’t the problem (7k backstab on top of cloak and dagger and mug) it was staying on top of her without taking so much conditions in.
And thanks for the advice guys, spotting the mesmer wasnt the problem for me they gave me an easy time spotting the real one, but nonetheless, i appreciate the info. I’ll try thieves guild for some extra dps
thanks alot anyway!
krytan, bought from the gem store
Who better to ask than the mesmers themselves
. To start, I am in no way saying your class is cheap or op because I know how it feels when people say your class is a n00b class when they havent even rolled with it. That being said I had a scenario multiple times recently in wvw against a mesmer and I was hoping someone can tell me what the hell kept happening. I am a thief (looks for pitchforks) and kept having a 1v1 with this same mesmer over and over. The win loss was like 6-3 with me having the 6 by the end of the day but none of those wins were easy:
This mesmer had a staff at first(also rolled torch and a scepter, if thats what shoots those pretty purple balls) and would, of course, role out the clones that would projectile attack me, so after a but I figured daggerstorm was the best counter, which it was, but it wasnt the solution. Now I am a stealth heavy thief, not glass cannon, but stealth heavy nonetheless with daggers. So when i stealthed off of a clone, it would shatter and hurt me and apply confusion. And these were clones that looked like the player not white versions of the player. Some of them also ran right at me. When I would be right on the mesmer, they would do some trick where they vanished replaced by a legion of clones where they once stood, and reappeared a few feet in back. Once again, these clones hurt (not only shot at me but when I accidently killed them they blew up) and applied confusion. When I applied basilisk venom for petrafying and stole, they would get that block buff somehow (they seemed to always have this purple orb around them). And their final trick, it was a simple aoe they placed at their feet (smart move on their part) that once again, hurt and gave me free confusion for a low price of free.
Now that win loss shows nine battles, there were really like 13 but I had to retreat four times due to unhappiness with my conditions and being turned into a bird-_-(yet still had one of the best retreats in the game LOL) So in summary….what was happening? Should I have been more patient in that fight and let her walk out of her aoe circle or waited for her to put herself in a vulnerable position? Help would be nice
I think of it as the Necromancer stepping halfway into the Mists, not quite here and not quite there… their physical bodies become immune to harm, but disturbances to this fragile state dissipates the life force required to hold it, eventually pulling the Necromancer back into this plane.
I really do love this description of the Death Shroud mechanic.
So I want to ask a question regarding this – say for RP purposes, how would the fact that you gain Life Force through “pain, death and suffering” around your character be tied into this? Would this Life Force be akin to “Mana” or “threads of power” that the necromancer gathers in order to achieve this state of being halfway into the Mists…?
Maybe to help, what also needs to be considered is the sound effect when you enter DS. At least for my necro, when she enters death shroud, if you listen closely you can hear the dying scream sound effect for female humans, which ( i have no theory) but life force may have something to do with souls. But that’s just me.
7/10 for Hydrangeas , sounds like the name fits better for Hydra-like creature ^^
6/10 for Yuukice , too Asian to be Sylvari i thinkMines ,
Alaseir – Thief . Not a bit much like Sylvarian name tho lol
You still get a 7-8/10. It may not be sylvari but it camouflages into one. It sounds like an NPC I would see in the Grove : )
my warrior’s name is Arbelez, a twisted form of Arbol which means tree in Spanish. And every other twisted form was somehow taken -_-
just a question, when you are cc’d like immo’d you use shadow step to break it….just shadow step and not shadow return? Because when im immo’d and use shadow step…i’m still immo’d just at a different spot :/
try scarlet, its fairly bright
I see a lot of female light armor users with the cult s=chest but I wanted to be different so I went with the coe dungeon chest :p diversity ftw
Actually that is one of the most common light chest pieces around. I actually see more of that then T3 chest and my char has it too.
Hi -five!
Who would it be? I’d have to say my thief….my sylvari thief.
I was going to change my female sylvari’s eye color too….good thing i stumbled upon this
hugs sylvari tight everything will be ok…….
so does this concept still apply in the mists too and wvw? because you can finish off people yet they can still be revived.
Im sorry but i am crying of laughter right now. Not at you but I can only imagine someones reaction if they are inexperienced and they are strolling along in wvw and they just go down. Not even hit or slashed a bit, they were just walking and the very next second they are on the ground.
only sylvari thieves can look this smexy….inb4humanfemaletierthreeculturalarmorpicture
i use 10/30/30/0/0 valkyrie armor runes of the wurm, all accessories are zerk with zerk jewels and weapons have zerk stats. D/D and S/B one daif you want or accuracy or whatever just make it count
dagger has air sigil, bow has fire sigil. The off hand dagger can have a sigil of bloodlust , or accuracy or whatever just make it count
…..well, that cant be unseen now…..
transmute to better gear and coe is the dungeon crucible of eternity. I really liked how the chest piece looked from that dungeon
Honestly these things kitten me off lol. My thief has no problem, just a quick shadow step and voila. my necromancer on the other hand…i get tackeled then due to lack of stun break i pop death shroud to absorb the damage but they literally eat right through it and finish me off >.<
first, my necromancer only has two pieces to her name, gloves and boots
second, no you have to buy them
third, dont be fooled, they are worth alot but THEY ARE NOT EXOTIC so you’ll have to tranz
ultimately its up to you if you want them. I see a lot of female light armor users with the cult s=chest but I wanted to be different so I went with the coe dungeon chest :p diversity ftw
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA that pic made my night
If anyone has one, you would know how great their /surprised was. But for some reason they sound like the human females. Any idea why they did this?
this upset me too
i miss the AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
or the eeeeeeeeeeAAAAAAAAA
My time to shine, Shawtell, show them how you role…two pics only the gloves are different, which pair of gloves looks cooler? First is duelist gloves second are the nightmare gloves(claws)
(edited by RedSpectrum.1975)
Thanks guys. I do understand that Zerk accessories pays off more than armor, so I am now thinking mostly: zerk accessories+ruby jewels, valk/knights armor, and zerk weapons…?
Now what’s the best way going about getting this stuff? I been running dungeons(CoF and CoE) and actually have mostly zerker armor and weapons. Should I just stop now and go for the valk? and then get the zerker accessories, cause those what I haven’t really obtained yet, and from my understanding karma/gold best way to get those?
Help much appreciated.
P.S: why does everyone put so many points into CS traits? I really don’t like them. Would I be just shooting myself in the foot by not traiting there and going with the 20/0/30/20/0 way? Only thing I see in CS line is stats and from what I hear that’s a “no-no” to trait that way…
sorry to say but most of the gear i mentioned would most likely require crafting or the trading post, and its not cheap (wurm rune is like 2g a pop) however the weapons can be dungeon ran since im pretty sure dungeon daggers have zerker stats
hmm my build is a semi glass cannon build… not as much dmg but more survivability.
It goes 10/30/30/0/0 with valkyrie gear, i may go with runes of the wurm for the crit and vitality. all of the accessories should be bezerker as well as crit friendly wepaons. if you try it out let me know how it works for you, it works well for me
P.S. the utilities i run are shadow signet, shad ref, and shad step so you can tell its a stealth heavy build
yup, did a few pvp matches with mouse turning and by the pale tree… i dont know if i was having a good day, they sucked , or this method truly is magical, either way i was averaging like 15 kills per game. Using the mouse lets me CnD and backstab much more fluidly
thank you guys so much! Even mesmers were a ton easier to kill this way since you can keep the pressure on them for so long. (i dont know which is worse for a thief a mesmer or a dd ele) Now i can officially practice roaming techniques in WvW >.>
tbh, my pvp is my pve and wvw build. i personally dont see the need to change constantly but thats just me
Thanks Yashi, you have helped me become better
Guess I’ll join the fray, don’t feel rushed or anything youre doing great. hmm I’ll give you two pics you can do which ever is easier. First is my sylvari thief, 2nd my necromancer
I’m just interested, not trying to troll at all here, in what situations do you feel backpedaling is necessary?
just guessing, perhaps a shortbow moment is an example, or PP
^ i might try swapping, that way i still have “trainingwheels” for a new set up but they are somewhat out of the way
thx! also if anyone else has other combos feel free to post, variety is the spice of life
What exactly are you guys doing to keep the camera behind you while moving so precisely? Any thief video will show the camera is in constant motion behind the thief and I thought it was just clicking both mouse buttons at the same time but that turned out too difficult and straightforward, literally. Are you guys just holding left click and manually sliding? Btw, this is my first pc game so I am certain there is something I dont know about. Back on topic, I usually control camera and movement with the traditional qweasd and quickly press both mouse buttons and the same time and swing around for a quick about face. But how the other guys do it seems much more professional and, well, necessary. Any help would be appreciated

I just want to clarify things. Im not saying the above comments are wrong but some make it out to seem DD has no survivability at all. Yes its a GC weapon choice but you can spec to where to have a decent amount of health and toughness as well as a high amount of dmg (still not near GC damage). But yes, I do agree SD offers more durability and utility whereas if you use DD, you will be embracing the darkness a whole lot more.
You’re actually not saying the statements above are wrong. You’re confused about the definition of the word durable.
Adjective
Able to withstand wear, pressure, or damage; hard-wearing.
A sword does not suddenly make you a tank. You do not suddenly gain more armor/toughness or increased health. You do however get a few abilities that make you survive easier, such as the ability to remove stuns/conditions with your infiltrator strike, as well as shadowstep out of a fight where you would otherwise take damage (Avoiding it, not soaking it).
You also gain the ability to blind or daze targets, which does not give you the ability to soak additional damage, but rather avoid damage altogether.
Also, just to clarify, saying something has more of something does not automatically make the thing it is being compared to have none of it. The word ‘more’ implies in addition to.
Yes im fully aware the sword itself doesn’t make you withstand attacks, but the builds around the sword do when it comes to armor and such. That’s what I meant by the sword making you more durable.
no why ? beacause you can be d/d and have 300 thoughness from traits and be as effective if not more than a full burst d/d
there is no “special” trait for sword.
People tend not to gear up the same way for swords as daggers. I even said, not just traits but armor and such generally makes thieves built as swordsmen tougher.
