I just want to clarify things. Im not saying the above comments are wrong but some make it out to seem DD has no survivability at all. Yes its a GC weapon choice but you can spec to where to have a decent amount of health and toughness as well as a high amount of dmg (still not near GC damage). But yes, I do agree SD offers more durability and utility whereas if you use DD, you will be embracing the darkness a whole lot more.

I think the sword has more damage in terms of strsight out attacking but daggers will give you more damage in the form of bursting with crits and backstabs. I think they balance out overall.

I agree but at the same time, I like how my human stands out. She was supposed to be a bit darker but it was hard to tell from the character selction screen but it doesnt matter. Compared to 99% of the humans out there, she’s pretty darn dark.

Whenever thieves go into stealth as well, they gain retaliation also, shadow step stealths you for 15 seconds XD

Some good changes OP, I think you should add some of these too:
Backstab damage increased by 100%
Steal uses 5 initiative instead of being on CD.
Heartseeker will always crit against enemies <25% hp.
Deathblossom cripples.
Revealed reduced to 1second duration

And Basilisk Venom should last 20 secs, and require 5 stunbreakers to get out of

LOL, did they change it sso stealing doesnt activate bas venom now? becuase i dont petrify when i steal with it

yes you can stack, Shadow refuge will give you 15, add a hide in shadows for and extra 3 or 4 depending on your trait set up, and if steal makes you go stealth, that another 3, blinding powder is another 3. add those up Someone correct me on stealth times if im wrong
EDIT: on that note, i wonder what would happen if multiple thieves stacked refuge on each other…..

Yes Toroquin seems you let your fingers fly, but yes, for starting out, a backstab build is not advised since it needs crucial traits you just dont have t the time

Sylvari thief as well lol. But DEFINITELY D/D burst. I’m not really into the whole condition damage thing. I switched out S/P for P/P. At least in PvE. Last night in WvW I kind of messed around with it. It did okay. But I’ll certainly look into SB.

Apparently dem Sylvari know how to thief it up, but anyway you should def try SB, don’e get me wrong, I love P/P, but SB does have multiple target hitting AND lets you be an escape artist.

My full armor set is the valkyrie set with the duelist skin.
Main weapon usage belongs to the dual daggers, as for what the secondary is depends on where I am:
Dungeon/pvpwvw
I use shortbow as it has aoe but also has great escape potential. Trick shot is also useful

pve: P/P because i wish it were better for other people and had synergy with D/D but you cant have everything apparently, and it just feels kitten.

As for battle approach, i try to run toward them and steal when able, which leads to a backstab. the rest of a fight will revolve around me evading sparingly while CnD and backstabbing trying to sparingly use HiS and SR. When fighting another thief, in WvW, when they go in stealth, i try to CnD off of the little things so that I can save my main stealth utilities for when I really need them. and when times get desperate when they go into stealth and I have nothing left, Dagger Storm as a last resort option. Lately if I get caught in a 1v1 in WvW and they put up a good fight, I’ll give them a bow. Though it seems female toons’ bows have an insulting behaviour to them…

Its sad how we have no ledges to stand on. If we get defeated we are noobs, if we use our class legitametly with stealthing and kill, we are noobs -_- this video supported that pov from the majority, and it makes me upset how one of our own even thought the thief was hacking

well in a way, isnt everyone’s thief there own i mean no two look the same :p

i run 10/30/30/0/0 semi glass cannon because im trading some raw power for survivvability. CnD is my best friend and i can effectively harass groups in WvW (though its not recommended for your health, my poor sylvari can’t afford her medical bill sometimes) but its really fun.
EDIT: cloudysan you should check out my build then and see if it works for you. utilities are sos shadref and shad step with dagger strom. armor is valkyrie jewels are zerker runes you can use wurm or scholer i think but i think wurm is better

Glasscannons use dagger dagger backstabbing, however, not all bs dd’s are glasscannon like me, some of us like to actually be able to take a few hits. As for sword dagger and sword pistol, im afraid i cant help you there. I use daggers and SB or dual pistols. The stealth brawler vid i linked uses sword dagger as a stealthing aspect which is interesting but that about it for my knowledge of the other guys. The other thieves here may know more about that and you could research some builds. Sorry dude.

flanking strike simply means that when you are attacking people from the side or behind, your attacks (usually your auto attack if your circling your opponent) will do even more damage, backstab itself it the auto attack skill for dagger main hand when you are in stealth. from the front, backstab is like any other attack, just does damage. From the side or behind however, it does superior damage, added on to the fact that flanking strike already increases any attack from the side or behind, backstab gets really powerful.

If you’re using D/D, I think you’re right in keeping Mug. I wouldn’t bother going into Acrobatics unless you’re going to devote at least 15 points for Feline Grace, as it’s probably our best minor trait.

Yeah thats what i figured, this isnt a full on glass cannon because I want some survivability in there which greatly helped me out in many cases. So the extra damage helps.

my main stealthing comes from the last dagger offhand skill cloak and dagger

tips for like what armor weapons? because the other guys pretty much covered the basics. Ultimately it depends on what kind of thief you want to be. There are alot of condition pd thieves. Im a dd backstab thief(but not a glasscannon >:( ) so the advice depends on what you want to do. edit: those arent the only two kinds of thieves

I just want someone to clear this up. Signet of Shadows has a noticeable increase in speed out of combat, my friends are always yelling for me to slow down. However in combat it seems the 25% speed increase is just gone. Like when players are running away and I start running after them, the distance doesn’t close forcing me to do something like Dancing Dagger. Does it still grant this speed increase in combat?

we are squishy but some armor can fix that. but as a thief your agility is literally your best defense, and stealth depending on your weapons. I role dagger dagger so stealth and I are best friends. It gets easier the more you play

I have really learned much from your vids. Im new to pc gaming in general so any bit of advice helps. For example using steal when your stomping a thief and he ports away. When i saw that my mind just was blown. And simple things im beating myself up for for not doing like CnDing before a stomp. Thanks much.

This thread helped me also thanks guys. I was having the same question. Not even so much as good players just anyone will do evades out out panic too soon as you CnD making the follow up hard to do. But i guess it just takes practice, and that note of movement speed, does the SoS increase your speed even while in combat? because it seems like it doesnt

Lore n00b here, I just wanted to know exactly what liches were and even more so why my necromancer can turn into one.

Sylvari don’t reproduce period, they aren’t even asexual. That being said, the are TECHNICALLY genderless, according to multiple sources. To add there are plants who have members that are either male or female (dioecious) but most plants have both reproductive organs, but the sylvari have only one each based on their gender obviously. And its useless in reproductive terms since two sylvari cannot make another sylvari.

As a thief, the story missions were brutal in some cases. Bercilak was nearly impossible, the ONLY reason I beat him was because when he defeated me, he had half health and I spawned in a spot he didnt have time to run back and recover. The other mission i needed help on was the one where you use that sylvari sword to kill the lich. Lots of undead around him and the sword did no damage to them. The undead were relentless. What added insult to injury was that I knew i could take them on with regular daggers, but i was forced to use the sword. Those were the only two missions that got me angry, I reiterate, as a thief.

Good rangers are annoying.
If your playing D/D backstab you’ll have your work cut out for you.
As an Sword thief, I keep them pin downed and warp around like my life depended on it. Cripple them. It’s hard since dancing dagger is expensive, but since they have a pet if you get in range it can cripple them twice and stack.
If it’s a dual melee Ranger, go /P and never look back.

Warthogs? You got lucky they aren’t using the Pig. Pigs OHKO thieves, always.

This actually helps me clarify. The GOOD rangers are the problem, most just stand still as if they want me to kill them. my build is 0/30/30/0/10. The well played rangers are the trap users and the ones who are smart enough to back peddle while keeping distance. Is this a matchup I should flat out avoid?
skills i usually role are HiS, S.Step, Sig of Shadows <.<, and S.Refuge. TG for elite for that extra dps

When the game first came out, the female sylvari had some pretty funny surprised screams that were unique to them alone. Then after one of the many updates, she sounds….human when she screams. Is this just me or did they really change those screams? I liked them……

I still use PP for fun in pve, i just use SB in dungeons for aoe help and in pvp wvw for escaping
