any1 hand sword builds that do decent damage?

Slow really? The 1h sword/torch is far better than any other method for soloing in my experience. Why? I can basically circle strafe a mob using the torch 5 skill taking no damage and avoiding other nasty effects. Can then blind and use sword 3. By then the mob is usually dead. Killing something in 1 rotation seems pretty good imho.

In contrast the skills on the gs and hammer leave me stuck in one spot, so I have to break off my optimal rotation all the time to dodge.

For farming orr, yeah sure GS all the way.

Last I checked the game I puchased was Guild Wars 2, the Guild Wars philosophy has always been gear parity at max level. I am not so sure what is so hard about that to understand. It’s what made GW different to WOW. Put in a gear treadmill and what do you have? just another kittenier version of WOW.

If they added only the agony stats that is only required in FotM, no extra stats as huge as one extra upgrade slot, things would be quite different. It won’t be a gear progression, it will be a pure FotM progression and won’t affect WvWvW. But they just did it, while adding the mechanics of a Gating War. Now that discrimination has flooded over everywhere, map chat, guild chat … I felt this world of Tyria has become such a harsh and unpleasant land now.

Exactly. There was no need to have any other stat on the infusion but agony. It feels like
WOW lite now.

Your gaming background? Love/hate GW2?

Online Gaming Background
Neverwiner Nights was my first online game and what I really liked was how on the harder worlds you had to know your role very well to be successful. The hardcore ruleset made it very exciting. I also liked that once you got your +5 gear you could basically do any of the content. You could slowly progress up to +7 but +5 was all you needed to take on the content from lvl 25-35.
I tried WOW and could not believe how easy the game was. Felt the whole game was kinda childish and frivolous. Played maybe 12 months total.
Went onto Warhammer, but couldn’t live with their class balancing.
Aion found it unnecessarily grindy and the world too small.
Rift too much gear discrepancy. Healing was wayyyy OP. Felt they were adding grinds and not content to the game.

Thoughts on GW2. Best levelling experience I’ve had in an MMO. Enjoyed the personal story. Love the art. Love WvW but feel its due some new content. Tbh I feel they have made a wrong turn with the new gear grind. Immersive stories and dynamic events were what made this game great. Why not build on them? The new gear tradmill is affecting other aspects of the game negatively and has been like a cancer dividing the community and eatin away at Anet’s goodwill with it’s customers. I understand the game may hve needed some form of progression, but gear treadmill seems like the lamest and cheapest option.

Swapped out for the blood and accuracy sigils.

Stuck with sword/torch and mace/focus.

Basically, the Red Drakes in LS were tearing me up with GS and hammer or mace/focus running Crithammer. With this build you seldom have your health drop below 80%.

Its all a cash shop grab. The Ascended Gear requires an enormous amount of resources that would take forever to farm. 50 ectos 250 of t6 material. Easiest way is to buy gems and resell them. Now most people won’t do this but the small percent that do are where the current money is made. This is reminding me of the patch that destroyed Allods more than anything.

I agree with the OP 100% I put up with the vertical progression of the early game to get to the end game where there was supposed to be none. I applaud him for such a great post.

The compromise I could live with
A)Ascended weapons don’t have more damage on them
B) Infusion stones Only work in dungeons – they do zero outside of a dungeon
Ascende items remain a desirable upgrade, but the difference is pretty minimal overall.

Basically you want 3k armor, as close to 3k as you can get power, 40-50% crit and then as much health as you can stack up.

Don’t forget to use Oils and Foods.

I currently have -
Beserker Chest Legs
Pvt shoulders and boots
Knights and emerald everything else
Soldier runes

After doing some research I think I would have been better with pvt chest and legs.

Gives me about 16500 health and 50% crit 3k armor and 2900 power… give or take a couple.

Been experimenting with beryl earring and ring and valk gloves for 19k health 45% crit and 65 crit damage, but the differences are not noticable.

And yeah that is my favourite all rounder build, does most things really well.

Why The Stat Cap Is So Important

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Relentliss.2170

First off, Rift just launched an expansion with a new level cap, which reset the gear ladder. It’s a perfect time to give it a try.

Second off — you have to look at the way the gear increments affect performance. In Rift, there’s a large increment in performance (dps) with single upgrades.

If you got berserker style ascended gear replacing similar exotic gear, the actual damage output for a typical GW2 character increases about 2%. This is because we have a huge “providence” of 916 naked for each stat, and damage is based on the sum of power + weapon-damage (scaled by other coefficients, and inversely proportional to toughness + armor of the target).

So go ahead and skip this whole addition, and no one will be able to see any difference (until you get to someplace with Agony).

It’s very different from Rift where a single item upgrade could give you +20% dps.

Who knows what the power gap will be once all the ascended gear with top level inscrptions will be? Noone yet. It will exceed 20% though, unless changes are made.

Rift was just an example of one of the many games with vertical progression that will Never be able to rebuild its playerbase, no matter what it does. No reason tombe all pedantic. People do NOT return to games with vertical progression. The various gear gaps stop people from returning.

However, people came and went and came again in GW1. As a F2play game vertical progression is not a very good model.

Here is something to chew on. I kinda liked Rift and wouldn’t mind checking it out. However, I never will. Why? Because if I returned I would have no one to play with and no way to gear up to do the content everyone is currently on. PVP… omg that would be impossible.

Now apply this to GW2 which is a free to play game. If you put in vertically progressive gear. People will come and go. But they won’t be coming back, they will be unable to take part in the current content.

If stats are capped then people will be more inclined to come back and play for periods of time, just like they did with gw1.

Pretty much. With no ranged option, there is one whole playstyle denied us. Generally, I find we only have 2 playstyles for each mode, wvw, spvp, pve. Each only has only 1 or 2 playstyles.

WvW – buffer/healer with staff, semi tanky ji bomber
Spvp – bunker
Pve – buffer/healer with staff, tanky dps

The core guardian abilities are pretty sound, which is great, but as a result our traits are pretty watered down, leaving us with few really viable options.

Zeal is a bad traitline and Radiance is pretty bland

Haha, I like your PvE comment. So a guardian is a buffer, healer, tank, and dps? Can I ask you what a Guardian is not? You pretty much named all the roles….

Can’t actually do all at once as you need specialised gear.

And since your buffs are kinda average and your heals kinda average it kinda feels like half a role of each.

Tanky dps- I think you might get what I mean if you played LOL. There were a number of characters that didn’t really excel at tanking or dps and were kinda a hybrid. Guardian feels alot like say Garen.

Tbh I don’t dungeon much. I am sure that people have a little more variation than this, but I never really feel like a tank or dps, just kinda a mix.

The question is not being able to do it all at once, but its about having options. You labeled all the options.

And specialized gear is the point, to go down a chosen path.

There really are not a lot of options. One or two viable specs is not a lot.

Within that realm we can learn that when there is a conflict that involves emotions because a customer is unhappy with something, the customer will keep reiterating the same thing over and over again until he/she gets the feeling they were heard, understood and taken seriously.

You could argue that the worst thing is the customer, but for a company it’s their bread and butter.

All I can say is that if these forums keep getting the same message over and over again, it means that these customers feel they have not been heard, understood or taken seriously….or all of the above.

This is pretty much why there is so much rage. There is nothing but a couple of pr blanket statements in response to literally thousands of angry posts. You can not change an MMO so dramatically and offer so little. There is no feeling we are being heard or that Anet is addressing our concerns. Instead there is a feeling they are ramming this new direction down our throats. There is no sense that the company is going to compromise.

Basically, you could design whatever you want. And reinvent your character all the time.

Now that would be a heck of a lot neater than any MMO currently out there. Dev’s wouldn’t have to worry about introducing endless gear grinds. Just looking at other games and bringing some of their skills into this one for people to buy with their play time.

Want to switch from heavy armor to light magic wielder? NP just buy all the skills, buy new gear and away you go.

PVP would be endlessly dynamic.

Check out Funcom’s “Secret World” incredible idea, much more like Guild Wars 1, even more so than GW2.

But Funcom under-baked another one, and are applying improvements/repair post release. Might be a solid product by now. If only ArenaNet had embraced the virtues of gw1 as much as Funcom did.

Its like you have a brand new car and when you take it to be serviced, the Mechanic goes and takes a dump on your front seat.

I guess I don’t get this analogy. Every other MMO increases it’s gear/levels etc as time goes on. I don’t understand what players would do in a game that this did not happen?? Again sit and wait for the next Christmas event for a santa Claus hat?

I’m not trying to disrespect your comment I honestly don’t understand how anyone can think or why this should not happen that gear/levels etc change as the game grows. Year from now I certainly would not be around with this game if all it did was give me a new look over and over and over again if I am perfectly fine with the set I am wearing.

I can still drive the car. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with it.

I can still play the game. It seems about the same.

But the whole thing stinks.

Look for most people WOW or EQ were their first games. They see gear grind as a necessary evil, even something desirable. Others maybe started online gaming with something different and can see that gear grind is not necessary or even desirable.

what is horizontal progression?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Relentliss.2170

Relentliss.2170

GW2 only has partial horizontal progression.

If they wanted to have real horizontal progression, they would not have classes at all. In fact, GW2 general mechanics would be better without classes.

Lets take weapons there are probably 20 or so skills for each weapon type. You would start with 2 skills on each weapon and as you skill up you could buy more with skill points. Everything you do in the world could reward you with XP which can then be turned into Skill Points. You could make 2 skills worth 8 and 5 skills worth 20. All the abilities would be available. Like the Guardian Leap of Faith then buy it, it costs 8 skill points and put it in your 2 slot. Prefer Hundred Blades, then buy it.

Same with your other skills. Buy the ones you want.

Even your special skills could be purchased. Want the Adrenaline skills, sure buy them and put them in that slot. Prefer Virtues, go for it.

Then traits and what not. Again they could be purchased with skill points.

Stats it would be easier to simply have them changed with gear.

Armor you could have another set of slots to sort out what armor you want. Want to use heavy armor, no problem. However you now have a run speed of +0%. Medium +10%. Light +15%. Use a shield, np but you are giving up some range or + crit or something by taking that slot in that area.

About a year ago I went back to play Warhammer, yeah I know shudder, and when you ding 40 you have to suffer through several months of being uncompetative and useless till you get Warlord gear and a decent amount of Renown Points to buy skills. This is a bad model for a Pvp game. Why? Quite simply it does not attract new players over a long period of time. New players reach max level, hit the gear grind, quit. Having a huge gear advantage is only detrimental to the long term viability of the game. Warhammer has been able to attract new players and players back but never retain them. This is a major reason why.

I pretty much always equip Wall of Reflection, Judges Int and one other skill. Save Yourselves, the Condition Signet (immobilise), Stand Your Ground, Hold The Line… all used in that last slot over the course of an evening. When you play against other people its important to be flexible.

Yes or No: Manifesto Represents the Game?

No x3.

When the game launched there were many things that needed improving to match up with the Manifesto. It was clear they were trying/tried and hope they might with a little time pull it off. Most of these things had to do with making the world seem as alive as possible and that you were an important member in it.

Its clear they have spent the last few months secretly working on shifting the game away from the Manifesto rather than towards it. Now it has a rather pathetic and grindy gear treadmill to make the hamsters happy. Probably because it was cheaper and easier than the original vision.

Best guess is its Beryl Orbs in Knight’s gear, maybe beserker chest, legs, weapons.

If they ever fix culling (lol @ anets engine). And if they bring the current thief nerfs to WvW thieves will be a lot better.

And yes I agree, being able to stealth in front of you every 10 sec is stupid.

Really?

Thieves are pretty balanced now. They need to extend the thief nerfs to WvW.

I want to work on the WvW department. They have not done a thing except remove the orbs. I’d check their desks for pillows. At least the spvp guys are trying.

I am pretty close.

P/t/v chest and legs
Knights everything else
Soldier’s runes
Artichoke soup
Maintenance oil
Beserker or knight’s weapons

Gets me about 50% crit and ~17k health.

I suppose
I could grab some pvt gloves and shoulders
And with sigil of accuracy still have +40% crit. Might push 18k health then.

YB – sure wish we saw more of you out on the battlefield (honorable opponents, I must say) and I’ll be out rolling the hills looking for a few of you to teach me yet more inventive ways to dirtnap. XD

Yeah well its getting demoralizing when you are doing your best but don’t have enough manpower to make decent gains. Hope to see more Yaks out next week. We will fight on this week but all we can do is be a pest with our current turn out.
