Thousand Lakes Alliance [TLA], Desolation
4 Champion titles, solo/duoq Legend, best old LB rank 64.

Really? Just this once, when pvpers get a chance of obtaining a legendary via their own talent and team coordination, the masses that got theirs via sheer mindless grind and/or luck go on an outrage? You do realize that it’s only FIVE people per region, the top of the brass, getting ones? It’s an incredibly small marginal of the actual population.
Even if such a small amount of people were to get a legendary, it’s nothing away from you. You’re not going to lose yours, nor will it invalidate the effort. If you feel like it’s such a hand-out, this tornament, why don’t you take part and go grab that prize?
(edited by Ritt.3069)
I completely agree with you about the buying them off the TP making those of us that work for it insignificant too…..which is why they should have been account bound when the game launched.
It’s still 5 people who are getting a weapon that symbolizes (or is supposed to symbolize) mastery of ALL aspects of the game….5 people who may or may not have ever stepped outside of PvP.
And how is the current means of obtaining one any better? One could obtain one of these “legendary” weapons without ever stepping into the world of PvP. What was that, mastery of ALL aspects of the game? And don’t even go there comparing WvW into PvP. WvW is just casual PvP on steroids in terms of actual PvP involved.
I’m all in for a variety of ways of achieving a legendary. PvP has barely got any love in terms of rewards, so this is a good change, even if it’s only for a marginal of people. Besides, actually excelling in terms of skill and team coordination against the best of the best certainly sounds more legendary to me than mindless mobbing against pve champs for hundreds of hours.
I do agree, however, that legendaries should be account bound. At least if you buy a precursor you still have to pass the rite of completing the legendary.
TL;DR An incredibly small marginal of PvP players getting a legendary won’t invalidate the efforts of the masses that play PvE.

Excuse me, but have you actually rolled a thief? No thief will be able to ‘easily’ take out a group of 5 people, unless they are terribad upleveled randies. Any decent 2+ people will be able to put the thief on defensive, no matter how good a thief.
The stealth mechanics are indeed strong, but that’s only in WvW. And while they are strong, they are not unbeatable. Thieves can be hit while in stealth, and the way most thieves are built, they’re like paper planes just waiting to have their wings shot. Even if they were the bunkier sort, you should be able to force them out of stealth/keep them from stealthing with timed CC’s. Not to mention the incoming Sic Em’ skill that will apply revealed.
OP, please roll a thief and then make that statement again. As it is, you’re more of a kitten baddie running your mouth rather than a person to be taken seriously. I would much rather cry about the new state of warriors, being able to perma stun and tank like a whale w/ their heals and massive hp pool, while still being able to outrun even thieves.
Less QQ more Yay.
For Solo qeue tournaments? I cannot tell you how often I’m teamed up with a guildless individual wearing the starter armor and using starter skills. The last one literally, not trolling, literally didn’t know they were in a tournament.
Please create a minimum rank of 10 (preferably 20) in order to create a stable and balanced playing field for all.
You can argue that it’s fair because anyone can get matched up with these people, but that’s inaccurate unless we’re talking about the long term. Hundreds if not thousands of matches would need to be played.
I’m tired of my kitten luck. Fix this ANET.
I love your topic, its like you know we (community) agree with you.
Well I am sorry but this game has barely any dedicated PvP players left and you want more restrictions for new players who want to try out PvP? Why dont we just all out kick, punch, curse and laugh at new players and put them in small corner where they can hang out with their own kind since we are so superior compared to them? That surely get more people to play PvP!
Sorry, dumb idea and I hope it will not happen. Oh and incase you didnt know. Solo Q does not matter, its improved version of Hotjoin which should have been like that since launch.
While it is true that the number of actual PvP players is quite low, a tournament game type is not where new players should ‘try out’ pvp. That’s what the non-ranked hot-joins are for. Now, it is true that soloQ can by no means be considered hardcore, a setting where it is in your best interest to win matches to improve your overall position in the leaderboards is hardly a place for a newbie to start off.
Were rank restrictions to be included, it would at least quarantee that your team knows the rules, the goal and has even the slightest amount of map-awareness. As of now, most of the lowbies don’t know a kitten what they’re supposed to do, and insteaed flail around the map being free kills for the opposite team, simply because they do not know the setting and are not used to actually fighting people with brains.
Besides, the rank restriction could be minimal, i.e. r10 as said in the OP, which can be achieved in a mere day of sPvP’ng. It would be no real hinder to the growth of the community, while it would make sure that people know the setting before entering competitive play.

Heya!
Thousand Lakes Alliance is a growing Finnish PvX alliance here in Desolation with a knack for WvW. A while ago [Hunt], [KLMA], [NoLi] and [THG] merged, and now represent TLA exclusively. [FIN] Ruska and [Gonp] Guardians of the North Pole remain as their own individual guilds, but are a part of the alliance and thus represent us on our WvW sessions.
TLA sports a whopping 160ish Finnish players, most of whom are at least fairly active. Our numbers are likely to rise as some of the people from our old guilds eventually return from their breaks.
During our WvW events we will be utilising Desospeak TS, hanging around our own sub-channel. We will, however, speak Finnish, as it is more of a natural choice for us if given the choice between languages. Nevertheless, it will make easier for the rest of the Deso community to keep in touch with us if we’re on Desospeak rather than our own Teamspeak, which we’ll be using outside the WvW events.
We are a PvX Alliance, so our community consists of both hardcore and casual players. We still have a lot to learn when it comes to excellent organization, but we’re getting there.
This Alliance is for all Finnish players here in Desolation. We welcome any Finnish guilds to our Alliance with open arms, as well as players looking for a guild. Feel free to contact us if you are interested in joining our alliance, or are simply in need of a guild. We’d be glad to have you with us either way.
We play on Sundays and Wednesdays around 18 GMT. With the late update in reset times, we also run a Guild Raid by the time of reset with what we have. Chances are, that we’ll have fewer participants on Fridays than during our regular WvW events, because hey, it’s Friday and people go out and stuff, but we should still be able to sport quite a few participants. Last Friday we had around 20 people on our TS sub-channel.
When we are in the battlefields, we will help other squads and are ready to cooperate, so feel free to ask our help, we would be glad to oblige. In Map Chat, we will naturally speak English to keep in touch with the rest of the community.
Our commanders as of now:
William Van Dine
Amelie Kinrake/Lucia Lily Mo
Targuil Istrong
Teekuppi/Axeggressor
Skythace Kalmakallo
Ayna Micro
Our numbers usually vary from 15 to 25 people. While we may not be the greatest force on the field, we can certainly pull our own weight, capping and defending towers and camps, sometimes even keeps.
You can contact any of the Commanders listed in-game or PM one of our representatives here in the forums if the need arises.
We are good-humored, fair and friendly group of Finnish players.
See you in the Battlefields!
Good Luck and Have Fun!
Lost all respect to the Desolation players now. Your actions with the cheating mesmer from guild “PvP” is just silly. Hacking in the combat, teleporting inside lord room in bay – what is it? You are not repoting it, but using his exploits and trying to take keeps behind our backs. Bleh.
Don’t stigmatize everyone for the actions of few. If you see someone cheating, make sure to report him and move on. He’ll be likely to watch the neat-o login screen from them on. Most of us Deso are a fair sport, and I know for a fact that such behavior will be reported from our side as well.
And don’t talk like your server is all goody-two-shoes. SFR did the same thing before, having a couple of mesmers hack their way inside all our t3 fortresses and flipping everything. Regarding to the BOOM incident.
It does suck losing the effort of many due to few kittens kitten around. Hopefully we’ll be able to root out all the bad eggs completely one day.
I do agree to some extent, that it is lame being forced to start out with ugly gear. However, having the chance to transfer your PvE gear to PvP will never happen. Why? Simply because how different the progression in PvP and PvE are.
Simply put: While in PvE grinding for, say, tier 3 cultural armor requires minimal effort of acquiring a hundred-ish gold, which can be achieved in a matter of days. On the other hand, to acquire the same gear in PvP you have to hit rank 80 in the PvP standards, meaning the same as scoring around 14,973,500 points in PvP, which is the equivalent of years of dedicated playing. The difference in the effort is vast, and while it would be possible to say, ‘tone down’ the PvP requirements a bit, I don’t see that ever happening simply because of the massive amount of tinkering and brain storming it would take on the devs’ part.
While I don’t see anet ever changing the gear system in actual PvP, I do think they should just let you keep your visual gear in Keg Brawl, Crab Toss and the like.
Instead of raising the hp pools of the standard trash mobs, they should just increase the amount of damage and cc the mobs have. This doesn’t have to be a direct buff to their base damage, but more of like adding stronger, menacing attacks in the skill pools of the mobs. You know, make it so that you actually need to either evade or interrupt the more nasty skills the enemies throw at you. You know, to actually keep aware of your opponent and plan ahead.
As of now, you can pretty much run any dungeon with minimal effort, standing around whacking that Hundred Blades of yours while standing on a blind field. Part of the reason why I’ve almost completely moved to s/tPvP is the lack of actual challenging content in pve. And no, I don’t feel like grinding the same stages in Fractals of the Nerds over and over again.
The whole spvp as a gametype encourages poor gameplay. Rather than actually trying to win the matches, most players would rather roflstomp everything running a mindless blob, as it generally nets more Glory than actually playing the game as intended.
What anet should do, is to remove ‘play 4 matches’ from the Dailies and replace it with ‘win 3-4 matches’. Then maybe, just maybe, people would strive to win and play efficiently rather than go for their personal Glory hunt all the time.

Crying non-stop about the RTL nerf and annoying the heck out of everyone I play with.
Generally warriors are one of the easier classes to face as a thief. Most of their killing blows, such as Eviscerate, Kill Shot and Bull’s Charge, have really obvious animations and are easy to avoid. As a thief, you have plenty of chances to stealth, dodge and blind your opponent, depending how you’re specced. The whirling axe you can steal from warrior is also an asset, as it deals nice dmg. If the unlikely occurence that warrior manages to CC you, you should always have shadow step, or at least one stun breaker, with you. You should also keep an eye out for Endure Pain, as he will be immune to direct damage while it is active; Stick to your conditions, and avoid anything he throws at you w/ shortbow 3, blind or stealth.
Guardians are a little trickier, as they have crazy passive regen, heals and constant retaliation, which hit thieves really hard. No doubt guardians are one of the hardest class for thief to fight face-to-face, but they’re definitely beatable. I have found it easiest to handle both guardians and warriors using the D/P specs, as you’ll get near infinite access to blind and stealth. Also, the new Lacerating’s Strike in the S/D weapon set is reall good against guardians, as it can effectively steal their boons non-stop. Starting off with the bow to wear down the guardian, and spike when he’s near half his hp is also a good strategy. The shortbow 3 really comes in handy, as you’ll be able to dodge pretty much all the punches that hit hard. Oh, and always blow off aegis before attempting to spike.
When it comes to disengaging, thief is superior. Shadow step has a nice 1200 range, and it becomes shadow return, allowing you to step back if needed. Shadow Refuge nets you a nice 12 seconds of stealth. Shortbow’s Infiltrator’s Arrow is a nice spammable spell, allowing you to move faster and sometimes take short cuts off the ledges and sort.

If you really love the class you play, you wouldn’t give up on it because of a nerf or two.
I’ve been rolling an ele since launch, and it is still my main toon. Sure, there have been times when the nerf bat has been a real handful, but not once has there been a time I couldn’t work my way out with all the new changes. It’s all a matter of adaptation.
On the competitive pvp perspective, however, I recognize the need for having multiple toons. No nerf ever is game breaking, but sometimes the devs like to tinker the classes too far, making it inconvenient to run a certain class until it is on par with the others again.
I fail to see how Mist Form was ‘op’. Mist Form, 75s, was far inferior to mesmers Distortion, 60s, in terms of both cooldown and flexibility, and yet I only ever saw QQ about the former.
While it gave that extra ‘oomph’ to the already powerful bunker, I considered it an important safety net for zerker eles. Along with the RTL nerf, zerker eles got hit way over the proportions. All the more reason for people to switch to bunkers which, ironically, is the exact opposite of what anet tries to achieve.
Now, Mist Form is next to useless for anything else than stomping and avoiding enemy spike. In fact, in a 1v1 situation it will be more beneficial to your opponent in most cases. While the ele is locked floating around in his swaggyswag foam mode, the enemy is free to heal, buff, do whatever he wants to gain the edge, really. Oh, and not to mention that conditions still tick dmg.
The QQ is way over the top, but the update does hit eles hard.
Get a guild. Play with friends. Problem solved.
I don’t really see the reason why you should care. In my experience, these people are usually just bads and only worth ignoring. If they get kicks from kneeling their pixels over your’s, then hey, good for them!
Honestly I have only ever been t-bagged in this game once, and that was when a buddy of mine from another server steamrolled over me. One does not simply avoid getting t-bagged by buddies. Q__Q
Limited mobility? Not sure if trolling. Thieves are likely to be the most mobile class in almost any PvP map w/ all the shortcuts they can take using shadow steps. The only other class to even rival that mobility is ele.
One of the thieves you faced was rank 3, so he obviously hadn’t played more than a couple of matches. The other one was probably just terrible. I don’t ever remember scoring a 0 in any match ever as a thief, and on the contrary place among the top players almost every match of hotjoin I play.
Play tournies if you want to face thieves that are genuinely good. You shouldn’t draw conclusions playing a few bads in hotjoin.
PvE is serious kitten. If you don’t play zerk gs warrior, you’re bad.
Exactly. People shouldn’t have got a week and a half worth of “ascended progress” just because they were too lazy to do their monthly before patch, but all hurried to do it as soon as this bug, exploit or whatever it is, got known. It’s really lame and imo they should either remove the laurels from those who got them without deserving them, or give everyone else a chance to get them too.
A lot of the people who got the extra 10 laurels don’t pvp. So they were not likely to have completed it this month.
And this is actually what troubles me the most. A lot of people who got the 10 extra laurels last month were nothing but opportunists, who could care no less for the s/tPvP as a gametype. I don’t even want to recount how many people in my guild only did the PvP Monthly to get their laurels, and then leave the gametype , never to return. Meanwhile people actually supporting the gametype, me included, were likely to have completed their Monthly earlier in March.
And while getting a lead in the chase for Ascended trinkets does not instantly win you battles, 10 laurels equals 10 days of gaming. What did I, and a lot of my mates, get from the PvP Monthly? 5 Freaking boosters and salvage kits. Yea, they’re cool.
/rant
Ooor you could just dodge their Pre-CnD/Mug/BS, making them pretty much harmless. Might take a bit of practice, but rolling a thief yourself helps a lot. Also keep on the look out for Basilisk venoms/Assassin’s Signet: that’s when they’re likely to burst.
Also Shadow Steps.
Thief is only worth complaining in WvW due to culling, aside from that it’s a l2 kitten ue.
Last Refuge is an asset, the only thing that’s broken is confusion, really. I don’t know what anet was thinking when they made certain traits trigger confusion in addition to skills. I often use the trait ‘Evasive Arcana’ on my elementalist, which can be really annoying, as dodging will trigger confusion.
The only problem I have w/ Last Refuge is when I’m in the middle of the fight, and accidently trigger the ‘Revealed’ debuff due to the said trait.
Lol, mesmers are meant to lock down the enemy. That was their main purpose in gw1 and just a little bit here in gw2. Just because you hate it and because you dont know how to counter it, doesnt mean that it is broken.
What is this? Did I ever say I wasn’t able to counter it? What I was onto is that a trait should not trigger confusion, as one does not exactly have a control over ‘trigger at %’ traits. Also, deciding not to take a certain trait is not ‘countering’ confusion, however much you would like to think so.
Please rethink your post before you jump into assumptions and go into the madbad forum warrior mode. Thanks.
It inflicts a random condition on the foes affected and does little damage. It also serves as an ethereal combo field you can use to gain Chaos Armor w/ a leap or blast finisher. Not much else though, it’s probably the most useless steal skill along with Ice Shard.

@TakeEagle
I personally don’t like the mask, but the rest of the set and the color combination looks fine. The legendary is also sweet. 8/10
My toon:
Against insanely overpowered Warriors, anyone got any tips?
Also, build is 20/20/0/20/10 with Fire, Air and Water Alacrity Traits, Fire Damage, Zephyr’s Boon, Quicker Cantrips, and Renewing Stamina.
(I don’t like playing bunker so I’m going with a more offensive build)Any tips are welcomed!
Warriors are usually by far the easiest class to overcome. Most of the warriors will play gs builds, which are plain predictable and easy to avoid. The key to beating a warrior is dodging his bull’s charge, shield bash and other c&d’s. Most of them have a very distinctive characteristics, so they should not be all that hard to avoid. You have probable specced Arcane for Cantrips, so you should have a lot of Vigor and therefore be able to dodge most of the hits. If not, consider doing so.
By what I gathered you were immobilized a lot by the warrior. This is probably because you got hit by his bolas; it’s a 20 sec cooldown skill, effective if hit. It is fairly easy to avoid. However, if you happen to get stuck, you have a lot of options. You can shadow step/mist form to save your back, but I prefer switching to water, as it cleanses conditions. You should probably use Cleansing Wave as a Water Major, as it useful for both you and your team.
You should also consider Armor of earth. Some warriors like to spec all their utilities in c&d’s, making Armor of Earth a very solid option.
Also know when to strike; if you can see him using Endure pain or Blocking, you should take it easy for a while. On the contrary, if you see him using Frenzy, that’s your cue to combo him with all you’ve got, as he will take double damage.
I know this obvious, but keep the warrior chilled/crippled/immobilized as much you can. Their cond removal is horrible, and you will pretty much shut them out if you use the conditions consistently.

Lolpve commanders.
Whirlpool is pretty great underwater if you can keep pulling them in, it seems underwater eles are just about constant sink/float.
I agree. Whirlpool should be used with consideration though. I have got myself killed a few times by a stabbed warrior doing his Tsunami Slash on me. In general Whirlpool is awesome.
Use the Water Element. It deals a ton load of damage, especially the 5th skill (Forgot what it’s called but the dmg is over “9000”
)
True, if you can nail it that is. I often find myself either missing with Water 5 or getting dodged. It is very efficient when hit though, and pairs well with Earth 5 for stealth.
breaks the radar
Or you could just plain simply ignore them. That’s what I do anyways.
S/P is still a viable build, it just requires more timing and insight now. You should invest some points from DPS into Acrobatics/Shadow Arts now, as you won’t be able to go full glass and life steal 5k per Pistol Whip anymore.
As much as I loved the build, I think this fix was the right decision.
As a matter of fact, D/D bunkers are semi-decent on the offensive side as well. Going full glass is only really effective in small groups, a few exceptions excluded. Hybrid builds tend to have a bad rep for not really exceling at anything, so I guess people try to avoid them.
In general bunkers are a valid choice for zergs as they will actually allow you to stay alive more than 2 seconds. More glassy builds can be effective in the right hands though, i.e. you don’t die.
Ele is utter garbage underwater. In my opinion ele is more of a supportive profession uw, as the damage is really pathetic if compared with warrior and engineer.
I tend to swap around the elements to get the boons, and as said before, you should take advantage of the combo fields. You should check gw2 wiki for more detailed information on combo fields and try to memorize as many as possible.
In pvp you should probably never take anyone on underwater as an ele, unless you are absolutely sure you can win. A good combo for a get away is earth 5 → water 5, as it will stealth you away while making a gap between you and your opponent. There are other useful combos you should utilize for your benefit.
I kinda agree.
The Supervisor was fine pre-update in my opinion. The buff was enough to prevent hit squads from effectively taking the camps, but was shredded by zergs. Now that he is immune to conditions as well, it’s not a rare sight seeing a zerg of 30 derping around a supply camp waiting for that 3 minutes to expire.
Some may view this as an adaptation issue, as it calls for a different kind of playstyle from earlier (as in raiding camps w/ zergs is not as beneficial anymore, and it promotes timing and leaving camps for small hit squads), but seeing 30+ people derping at a camp for 3-4 minutes is ridiculous imo.
But, as said before, it is beneficial for the outnumbered server which is always a plus.
(edited by Ritt.3069)
Too long, did not even finish reading.
Culling is a problem in WvW, but a good thief will never be able to one-man-army a party of 4 people. There are plenty of ways to take down a thief, easiest of which is to simply immobilize, daze/stun or C&D them. Stealth does not negate damage, and thieves are hella squishy. A stationary thief is a dead thief.
I suggest you roll a thief and actually l2p before making threads like these.
Ironically I have killed 5 map bosses after the update and have yet to obtain a rare.
[Thieves]
The only times I could get some damage in was when I RTL -> Updraft -> Burning Speed -> Ring of Fire, but then he’d disappear and be back with nearly full health by the time he reappeared. How do I win against this?
If you can nail your combo this far, you’ve pretty much won the fight already. Just proceed to use Magnetic Grasp/Magnetic Leap for immo and Fire Aura -> Earth 4 -> Earth 2 -> Water 3 etc. Most thieves will be shredded to pieces, as long as they won’t shadow step out of your reach.
Fighting thieves in general is quite monotous. It’s obligatory to dodge their CnD/Mug/x, which shouldn’t be too much of a problem unless you’re taken by a surprise. Usually after this it’s easy to nail your RTL bomb. They will most likely try to use escape using Hide in Shadows, but as long as you can nail your Magnetic Grasp they’re basically free meat. They may be stealthed, but they still take the beating.
P/D thieves tend to stack loads of conditions on you, so Ether Renewal is an asset, as said before.
This may have been obvious, but hope it helps.
I let someone do their JP. The problem: they attack me first at the first sight. Thus they die.
This. I am generally the guy who does /wave when I see hostiles in jp. It’s a shame that most people take that as a green light for ganking and jump right at me. I don’t really mind giving the baddies a beating though if that’s what they’re after.
Because sPvP is obviously fine as it is!
/sarcasm
I find it funny how thief as a profession gets bashed for a broken game mechanic. The problem is culling, not the stealth in itself.
Agreed. I just spent the 2 most useless hours of my life trying to reach the top, and the furthest I got was to the second beam. The whole time I had slight delay, even though I was running with minimal graphic options. I can’t help but think the one who came up with this whole tower must’ve been an utter sadist, as the tower was all but fun for the vast majority of the people I encountered, myself included.
