I don’t like RNG and I won’t go through it for the minis that I want. Especially since I am looking for specific ones. I’d like to buy the minis I want from the TP with gold. It’s not a waste of money for Anet to do so because people would see more of a return of investment and purchase RNG. It should never have been RNG + Account bound in the first place. So please make them unbound and let me buy the minis I want!

As a solo gamer: Holidays are a pain.

RoChan.1926

For those of you who heap scorn on those, like myself, who choose the solo path for reasons relating to real life issues, I challenge you: Take on one of us. Be understanding when we need to go AFK at inconvenient times. Don’t accuse us of leeching XP/rewards/whatever if we are AFK for extended periods.

-snip-

I’d like to team to do these. I really would. But nothing in this forum, and nothing I’ve experienced in the past, shows me that, outside of my tiny crew, I’ll find anything but frustration and discourtesy. I have every sympathy for those who are in the same boat as me.

Here are the issues I have with your post:
- This is your situation and you have to deal with it. Not some random people you met today.
- You expect courtesy from strangers, yet can’t show them the same? I could never understand how smb can go in a dungeon with a pug group knowing that they might not be available for the run(emergencies happen, bio breaks happen, can’t see it coming, but when you know…). I’ve had issues that put me in such situation. And if I knew there is a chance I might have to leave(from pc/net issues through sick cat to on-call at work), I simply didn’t pug. Because I feel bad when I’m leeching(being afk while the rest are doing stuff and you get a reward for it is the definition of leeching) or making people wait on me)in case they can’t keep going without me).
- You say you are in it for the social aspect, right? Well, be social. Join a big guild, talk to people. Strangers don’t care. And you can’t expect them to, because they are, well, strangers. Guildies are somewhere between friends and strangers. Even if you never said a word to them, they are far more likely to accept and tolerate you(unless it’s impossible to progress without u), at least for a while.

I’ve never seen a more uncompassionate person in a MMO forum.

Apparently you’ve never had a disabled or dying person to take care of by yourself.

Meanness will never make this game better – you’d better grow up and learn some compassion soon.

All this “grow up” talk is getting on my nerves. Fristly as an adult there is one thing you need to do as a caregiver when grouping up. Communicate. Communication is key to anything in life. If you cannot explain your situation in a few minutes then I’m sorry there is no gaming company that can help you. That is truly a ‘solo’ act in of its self.

So please grow up and learn to communicate. If you cannot find a group that is nice enough to say: “Ok. No problem.” Then it is through no fault but your own. I’ve run with caregivers and many people who just randomly disappear but if they don’t tell me before hand what they are or what they are going to do I can only assume that they are being rude to me and my group. Being courtous goes both ways, you must also be courtious to explain that you’ll disappear. I’ve run into 1 group that was rude during an AC dungeon that didn’t wait for me when I explained that I had to take an important phone call out of hundreds that have let me run off to take care of my father, my business, my bios, everything. So perhaps it is a user error in this instance.

Btw I solo just about everything in this game but dungeons because I understand I can’t do everything by myself. I also try to communicate to my PUG before the party starts it’s way any situations that may pull me off the radar at any moment. So far it’s worked for all my game play experiences GW2 and other much harsher MMOs.

Snow ball PVP achievements? Seriously?

in Wintersday

Posted by: RoChan.1926

RoChan.1926

Play to win the game not to get the achievements and both will happen fairly quickly.

If you play a heavy gunner, this is manifestly not true. Perhaps if you play a scout it is.

False. I got 3 out of the 5 with the heavy gunner.

@OP: I agree. Originally when the event first started people actually played the game the way it was supposed to be and I naturally got the achievements through game play. It took a while but it happened. Now I go in there for some fun and find that I can’t get my teammates to help run the present (seriously I’ve been downed at SPAWN) nor grab it (I’ve had to grab it as a heavy gunner 3 times for kitten’s sake), when the other team grabs it it’s a mad dash to stop the present carrier without worrying about the 5 people shooting at everyone instead of you know taking them out and letting 2 or 3 take out the carrier. It’s no longer fun for me. I feel like I’m playing in a TF2 Valve server with all the terrible players that don’t understand the concept of team play to win the objective. And they SHOULD be aiming to win I mean you get MORE presents if you do. sigh

I hope that in the future Anet does tie in achievements to PVP games based on the type of gameplay. If it’s solo then solo achievements if it’s team then team achievements. Nothing ruins the fun than wondering where the heck is the rest of your team and why aren’t they helping.

[EDIT] Let me make mention that when I was downed at spawn I had 5 teammates around me. 1 Heavy gunner that was actually fighting back those attacking, 2 support that did nothing but roll around as snowballs (not once they did try to heal me when I was under attack) and 2 scouts that were trying to grab the present under cloak when I went down. That was on Sunday. Friday and Saturday were the best games ever, even if my team lost I felt I had a lot of fun because people worked together.

Solutions to the mini pet issue

in Wintersday

Posted by: RoChan.1926

RoChan.1926

I just wanted to add, that neither I nor my sister are a mini pet collector but we do love snowmen and the quaggans so I looked on the minis page the moment I saw the after imaged on the collector’s tab as we both thought they were extremely cute. Since I didn’t see the mini pack I saw for Halloween, I went to the forums to find out the answer… I can only surmise that Anet neither wants collector’s money or people who are just interested in certain minis. My sister and I would have each bought the two packs needed so we could get the quaggan as well as the snowman but now we don’t. We have bought boxes (a total of 4) but they weren’t for the minis (just to see what came in them and then for more reindeer tonics) so we’re not going to spend a lot of money on those either just for a chance.

Basically Anet missed their bell curve on the minis. I would have preferred that they continued to sell the mini set as a holiday special thing for those interested at the time and for collectors. All they would gain is more money from both groups. As it stands now collectors aren’t happy, non-collectors won’t care as much towards them either because the sheer amount of chance is enough to make them apathetic towards any purchase.

Anet please learn from this. People genuinely love to give you money, if you let them. But the moment you start thinking that you can grab more through tricks and slights of hands is the moment you lose more money and customers. I don’t mind the RNG boxes when it doesn’t effect my own purchases. I wish RNG boxes would be used as a poor man’s way to obtain items directly sold in the store. Why can’t both things live in harmony? Those who like to gamble can and if they’re lucky pay less than someone who bought directly in the store. There’s also always the threshold people who will pay a certain dollar amount on a chance before by directly, that’s even more money still! With lastly the group that will pay the dollar amount given for the direct purchase of what they want. That’s 3 groups of buyers that are providing money! Why can’t you please both the risk taker and the non-risk taker? Why must it always be one or the other?

Oh man this could be fun. Like a snow ball ability to knock eachother around and off the puzzle, and an achievement for how many people you knock off. If they add this I guarantee everyone one asking for a harder jumping puzzle will get it! I would definitely participate in that event!

I would not participate in that at all. >:( And I loved the MK JP! I did it several times on different races because I loved the challenge but PvP would ruin it for me. Now if a snowball fight was separate I’d be all over both. :D

@Op I can’t wait to see the JP for Wintersday! While I don’t disagree with the inherent message you’re trying to promote… there are two things wrong with your anology.

1: Some stores actually do accept to do a refund/bundle sale if purchased the previous day. Because they don’t want to have to deal with #2

2: Refunds are at full purchase price with your ticket. Some can refund the item in full and re-buy it at the sale price without the manager or anyone else being able to say anything about it.

[..]

Ok I have to admit your engi set up sounds incredibly fun and I am seriously curious to try it out even with what I have currently just because it sounds amazing. Thanks for the info and for breaking it down for me. I don’t think I can master the switching about (I have a hard enough time on my ele) but I like that you found and focus on creating combos with the utilities. It shows me that there is more to this than I previously thought and to explore just a bit more. in that area for a play style that I can be comfortable with. Thanks again for sharing!

What gear/rune-orb/accessories are you running?

He mentioned gear/runes earlier but you might want to PM him in private for more details. While I don’t think he’d mind too much I do think it’s prudent to allow him some secrets.

That sounds like playing an ele with all the swapping around. Confusing as hell. Would take a lot of practice, certainly, to get the potential out of it.

I thought the same thing when reading and then realized that I cannot believe I didn’t think to play it the same way as an ele since those two classes are the only ones who cannot switch weapons and instead have to switch utilities/elements to gain more.

My favorite part about this is when you tell me to read more carefully. I didn’t realize you responded to the named “Cribbage.2056” as well as the name RoChan.1926"

Then I apologize for misunderstanding your intention. Top quoting usually means you are talking to the original poster while referencing Cribbage’s post to back up your statements. Again my apologies I did misread and understand your intentions.

As for your set up I can see how you can take on 2-3 thieves at once since your toughness doesn’t like them 1-2 you in 2 or 3 hits. However because you’ve put everything into being a tank how long does it take you to kill them? Do you notice a loss in power or do your utilizes help make up in that? One more question, I’ve only recently started messing around with the elixir gun in dungeons and found it pretty useful for PvE mobs but I have a hard time seeing how it would be good against other players. Can you expand on why the elixir gun?

I am hoping for some help or tips on dealing with these two classes. I play WvW not SPvP so I don’t often run into them in a 1v1 situation but on occasion I do and when it happens I never have a chance to kill or escape. My build isn’t exactly meant for 1v1 but group support yet I can do comparably well with any class on a 1v1 situation except for those two.

My build is 30/20/0/10/10 with focus on nades, rifles, speedy kits, and for that moment when I need to get out of Dodge Self Regulating Defense. My utilities being med kit, grenade kit, net turret, radiation field, and the elite supply crate. My accessories are all lvl 80 greens, except my pendent is a rare soldier’s pendent. Armor is mostly exotics except for gloves with power/toughness/vitality my runes are all over the place at the moment until I’m ready to buy the right ones. Basically I’m pretty sturdy. I’m not going in for kills or anything but when attacking/defending an objective or a zerg battle I’m the one you want to bring along. I also want to express I am not some Pro/Elite player here, but I’m not shabby. With my build and knowledge of using my skills/utilizes I can kill just about any class or force them to run away (Eles) if I need to.

My initial tendency when dealing with thieves and mesmers are to play keep away for thieves and keep them close for mesmers. I’ve yet to loose sight of the real mesmer either but sometimes I feel like my gun isn’t shooting at them either even if I have real target selected.

I guess what I am asking is am I doing something wrong? Is there something wrong with my set up? Any tips for those scenarios?

This isn't about gear but human nature

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: RoChan.1926

RoChan.1926

Human nature can never be calculated.
“To feel special” is part of the human nature, no one can deny that.

Let’s have an example.
Scenario 1 : There’s a sports game event that everyone races to the finish line. There are trophies for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. The 4th to 9th places received a token of participation.

Scenario 2 : There’s a sports game event that everyone races to the finish line. There are no trophies and winners. All 1st to 9th places received a token of participation.

Which scenario above makes players feel a sense of anticipation and more satisfied?
The obvious answer would be scenario 1. Ask yourself why? It’s because it’s a game. In a game, there are suppose to be both winners and losers. What is a game when everyone is a “winner”? It’s just an illusion to blind people when in fact, there’re no winners and losers. It’s part of human nature to have or achieve something that the rest doesn’t. When they achieve something that the rest doesn’t, they feel special. When everyone achieve the same thing, there’s lesser appeal to the event. There’s no prestige.

Actually the scenario you described is the human condition not human nature. We are constantly being conditioned in society to be better than the person next to us and not to be better than we were before.

Human nature example: Today I ran faster than yesterday. I am better than myself from yesterday.

Human condition example: Today I got first place in a race. I am better than others.

See the difference? It’s hard to nurture human nature without fostering the human condition but not impossible. It does however rely on the person’s personality type.

Another example are the branded items in the real world.
Why do many people go after such stuffs when there’s a cheaper item with the same functionality? Human nature plays a part in this too. When people bought a branded bag that the majority can never afford, they feel a sense of being special. When they wear something with high rarity, they feel rewarded and proved to the public that they have worked hard to earn that amount of money to purchase something “rare”. While not everyone goes after the same thing, the element is still inside us.

This is still the human condition. The idea that I am better than someone else because I have a brand and can show it off. It’s elitism. It’s the ‘haves’ vs ‘the have nots’ and nothing to do with human nature.

IRL I would actualy say work hard to get rewarded. But the problem is I play this game for fun. I have already payed 60$ to have fun and I would prefer not having to grind to have fun when it would be possible to create an option that wouldn’t force me to grind before having fun.

So you would have a problem in real life about an option that would allow you to be rewarded without working hard?

I am curious why you think an online game should have easy access to fun while real life shouldn’t.

Because it’s an online game.

…and theres the fallacy that Candyland or Chutes & Ladders can be just as fun as Monopoly or Risk.

easy =/= fun

Actually what you’ve said is a fallacy. All games are equally as fun as the next, it’s the expectations and how you approach the games that can make them not fun. An easy game can be just as fun as a hard game.

Personal rewards =/= difficulty of play.

RoChan.1926

I have to use the tl:dr to quote you, otherwise I may not have room to reply

I’m running into that problem as well.

I agree we don’t know what Anet’s plan is regarding all this but they’re also not being transparent with it to give people a pause of relief. Right now it looks like they mucked about without very much thought and are being reactive instead of proactive. It’s bad business and it’s not a good thing to be known as ‘that company that reacts instead of proactively creates.’ Unfortunately they way they are acting is not exactly confidence building or in any way on the path to restoring people’s trust or brand loyalty.

I would have loved to be the fly on the wall to those meetings that brain stormed the release of FotM and Ascended. It sure would have provided a lot more insight to their goals than the current information.

Out of all the things they explained the gap between Exotics and Legendaries was the thing that was explained even marginally well. The disparity between effort was enormous and I can understand the need to create a much smaller goal to reach. Consider this, 4 years of college can be… discouraging for some. My friends who went to a 4 year college and dropped out are greater than those who went to a 2 year college and then to a 4 year college to finish up. We all agreed that it was much more encouraging to finish one set and grab a midway diploma before grabbing the actual diploma. My sister who hates studying and school also did the 2 year/4 year and completed while all her friends did not even the most studious. Studies also prove that in long term goals having short term goals to reach make the long term much easier to obtain. I don’t think anyone in the forums disagreed there was a gap and that a middle goal was needed. What is not understood is why they took that gap and raised the statistical advantage creating yet another gap. That’s what is most unclear about the entire process of gap closing.

Correct best way to combat it is to make it a personal choice to not participate in the dungeon bullying but as all things there will come to be a time where those that stand against will grow weary of being the only ones making a difference. I don’t think that the community is wholly responsible though. Anet gave them the tools to encourage it instead of lowering it. There are many suggestions in the forum that have cropped up giving alternatives of what they ‘could’ have done to create a more inclusive instead of exclusive community. Anet can’t remove the human condition but they can take measures to dissuade it.

Take for instance my own personal example. I’ve been running Fractals for fun so I’ve repeated level 1 and 2 a few times to help people out a bit. Through all that I managed to get to level 4 and found several groups, at the time, who could run level 4. 2 Client crashes and disconnects later and I gave up moving to level 5 and moved onto other things. Today I cannot find a level 4 group after shouting for a hours through several overflows though there were people doing level 5. I found 2 groups that were doing level 3 and my initial thought was, let me help them to then do level 4. Those groups however dissolved after completion and hours later I’m still on level 4 and right back were I started hours ago. Imagine that this continues on several more times with leveling being incredibly slow. I don’t have endless patience and I don’t know anyone who does and plays Guild Wars 2. I also shouldn’t be punished/forced to join some large nameless guild just to advance. These scenarios could have been avoided through Anet’s development team but instead now rely solely on the community of which come from the internet (and let’s be honest… it’s not a pretty place.) Basically they fostered a place where the human condition can thrive.

I honestly don’t care too much for FotM and would have happily ignored it along with Ascended gear if not for the monthly chest. I found I did have some bit of fun but it’s not something that is part of my own personal goals in GW2 so I don’t care if I ever move from level 4. I’ll run 1 through 4 if I have to until I get bored. Right now it’s just a diversion to me but I can sympathize with those who are in situations similar to mine and are frustrated. Any fix Anet does now puts them right back into the reactive category which I stated earlier is not a good place to be.

Snip

I have become conditioned to start off with that as some people get their undies in a bunch if you intrude on a not so private discussion. ;__; While it was greed in terms of money it is still a situation of “haves and have nots” which is also congruent with the terms of elitism.

Well, I don’t think it’s warranted for anything PvE related except as you mentioned in higher levels of FotM where it’s just a hardmode version thus avoidable to some extent. I say that because of the human condition of exclusion rather than inclusion making it hard to find and create parties after a certain amount of groups of people have moved passed those levels currently (that is both community and Anet’s problem in my opinion but that’s a debate for another time). In sPvP there is no need at all since everything is standardized, however in WvW that is where the argument holds ground since is unstandardized PvP where both skill and gearscore can make a difference between a win or a lose (zerg vs zerg included since it consists of a group of people acting as one usually.) Yet if you don’t do WvW actively then it won’t matter to have Ascended gear or not.

You are correct there is no easy or straight forward answer to what constitutes as a reward. However I don’t think it’s all just about the gear either but it’s not necessarily the human nature that the OP described. A lot of players were expressing it as a need to be at the top of the game, or that they received a gear grind they didn’t want but now needed but the problem with gamers and most consumers is that they really don’t know what they want or how to express their disappointments regarding products. There was a really great game article (that I can’t find now) where in the Borderlands 2 development a lot of what beta testers complained about were not truly what bothered them. One example was where they complained that the characters ran too slow, so Gearbox added more rocks to create the illusion of shorter distances. When the beta testers re-played they didn’t complain about the characters running too slow even though the speed was never changed. My sister and I had a similar experience with we first played GW2 as Humans and Norns complaining to each other how we hated that Norns ran so slow, until we realized that all races ran the same speed just the character models did not animate at the same speed we then stopped complaining because it no longer mattered.

The crux of the matter is that those who so strongly oppose the new gear is that they perceive a loss of choice. They reach this conclusion because they followed and studied the game as it was to be released and choose to play this game with those mindsets in mind. Suddenly the game does something different and they perceive they have lost their choice and that their decision to buy/play the game may have been altered if this had been privy to them prior to purchase. Moving along that it also causes a sense of unease to the future they also feel robbed of their choices to come. So the question then becomes is their perception wrong or their personalities effecting that perception?

What I feel though is happening is that instead of human nature to overcome/be greater it gets interchanged with the human condition as described in my money example an greed starts to rear it’s ugly head in the community. There have been instances of this occurring more frequently than before since the inception of the dungeon due to difficulty level with Ascended gear barely even making it into the equation.

[Edit]Sorry Tobias I kinda lost track of what I was trying to say in all that time and editing.
tl;dr: Reward is very subjective since time is hard to calculate. Human nature can often be interchanged with the Human condition causing fractures in the community due to power creeps. A lot of the uproar is really the perception of the loss of choice and not so much the OP or the power creep. However perception is everything, even down to if Ascended gear is good reward of time or not.

“Thank you, your answer therefore is . . . Legendary is better and Ascended is a waste of effort?”

No.

My answer is:

If legendary were the top tier and had better stats, people would compete for legendary. If ascended is the top tier (which it is right now) everyone has to have it. To be on an even playing field.

Your answer isn’t accurate enough, and has irrelevant information in it considering the question I asked.

If you could have the tier above Ascended without needing to do it, would you still be going for Ascended?

The question seems like a hard attempt to twist my words.

Let me say it a different way. Its simple.

Lets say there was some tier of items that had the highest stats. (lets call it nothing)

Then yes people would compete for nothing with the highest tier of stats.

I am saying people will compete for the highest stats, no matter what you call the item.

My friend, if I wanted to twist your words, I’d “frankenquote” you :P What I’m trying to do is get to the heart of your issue so I know whether or not to agree.

In this case, I’d agree with the qualifier of “some people will always compete for the highest stats”. Mostly because I wouldn’t be, and if one person isn’t then everyone isn’t.

Pardon my intrusion, but I can understand Zoul’s frustration because you keep deflecting especially since he was quoting a line of thought regarding how there are so many people currently playing FotM. Granted Zoul also missed out mentioning one important thing, if people are none the wiser then they will attempt to achieve nothing.

For example, if everyone has a dollar and only a dollar most would be content while there will be those who will always be dissatisfied, however everyone would think the same ‘I am equal to my neighbor and they are equal to me. Neither of us have a greater advantage of wealth.’ If suddenly it becomes aware to the group that they can have two dollars verses one that is what begins the train of thought of ‘I am no longer equal to my neighbor and they have a greater advantage of wealth.’ This change in mentality then starts to create the ‘need’ to return to being equal or to be greater. That was what I am comprehending Zoul was try to bring up.

In context to the OP’s thread, what determines the ‘need’ is really how you perceive your time. Real life and human nature do bring themselves into video games, because unlike movies and books, you invest a bit of yourself into them. Those who say they clearly and distinctly do not probably don’t realize that they do. Little nuances of their personalities and mindsets affect not only the decisions they make in a game, but how they handle their in game gold, organize their banks, socially interact with other players, and play style of fighting.

What the OP proposes is that the there are only two groups of value of time in game correlated by the value of time outside of the game. That could not be farther from the truth, as this thread has proven. Time has value and how it’s measured is a mix of personal and worldly. However I think we can all agree that everyone wants a return on the investment of time they put into the game, whether it’s an enjoyable experience or higher stated armor everyone wants something for the time they sunk in.

To answer your question regarding chasing Ascended vs Legendaries, even with a lucky break, I would go for which ever was the best investment of my time. At this point, based on my own personal future predictions, that would be Legendaries unless Anet doubles back on their word on Legendaries always being the BiS as apposed to Ascended being the BiS until the next tier.

Ignoring Ascended Tier

Pretty much the same thing here. I have personal goals that I’m trying to achieve in game that have nothing to do with the Ascended gear so I’m going to continue to play and ignore it. If it comes down to I HAVE to have it in order to play, well then I’ll just stop playing.

Personally I like the Fractals dungeon. It’s fun to me but the moment that I have to go into higher levels with Ascended I’ll just start back at 1.

Thoughts on Ascended Gear? [Merged threads]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

People need to stop saying they are setting a precedent.

Every single change sets a precedent… nerfs, buffs etc…. they all set a precedent.

Increasing karma prices for gear? Precendent…. How do we know they wont continue doing this?

Flooding the market with Materials? Precendent… What if they did this with other hard to get mats?

Saying they are setting a precedent doesn’t mean anything when everything they change can set a precedent.

But it does when it’s a major change and this qualifies as a major change. It will cause a change in the player’s goals. It will cause a change in player’s attitudes. It was cause a change in player’s mentality.

So yes, they are setting a precedence most especially with the Legendaries being bumped up. Will they continue to do so when level cap is raised? Probably because they’ve sent the precedence to do so.

Ascended Items Need the Same Stats as Exotics

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

RoChan.1926

I actually loled at this topic title, you want free ascended gear? No. Mmo’s grow, and so will you. It’s a formula us mmo gamers are all accustom to and it’s essential to give the game longevity. Every time new gear tiers are introduced, it’s always funny to see how those in end game feel “entitled” to free upgrades XD.

No, most people who bought GW2 did so because they didn’t want vertical gear progression. We are tired of that mmo model. It has nothing to do with wanting free gear, its not wanting new content to be gated and tied to RNG generated gear.

I’m sorry, “most” people did not buy gw2 for the reason you stated above, that’s quite the assumption. How do you think mmo’s keep people playing long term? People expect new content like dungeons, new arenas to fight in, more epic stats or appearance items to achieve, it’s all a standard feature in any mmo on the market today to KEEP YOU LOGGED ON. Like it or not, the devs are trying to make their bacon, and do so by keeping you logged on. “But I play for fun and not for gear,” well, many people also enjoy chasing carrots(new gear etc..), you expect the devs to cut those players out entirely by NEVER introducing new tiers? If you dont want gear inflation found in every mmo, then you can play spvp where gear inflation does not reach.

You may have missed something, but we don’t pay to log on to GW2. It’s not getting arenanet money to cater to the crowd that lives in the game since they are buying gems with gold, not actual cash.

They don’t cater those that live in the game for money? I can tell you from all my friends and I that log on on the daily, have spent at least 50 dollars in real cash for in game gold, bank spaces, character slots, black lion keys and so on all due to the fact that they have been playing so many hours.

I just wanted to add to this for a moment.

Happy gamers = money spenders. It really doesn’t matter if they like gear grind or not. The people who are happily enjoying the game will spend money to support the game. Arguing who spends in which camp is pointless, both camps spend money as long as they are happily entertained and enjoying the game. The real question is who will be the camp left standing?

Additional information that needs to also be communicated. Does this 2011 information still hold true? If it does why then was it never communicated before the release of the game and contradictory information provided? What is the projected time frame for these expansions? Will Legendaries continue to be bumped up as BiS if the level cap increases and with it gear increase? How then will Anet combat their current stance of “Our goal is not to create a gear treadmill.” if the level ceiling will increase, i.e. how is Anet going to make it so that we don’t feel that gear treadmill?

All of this is currently very important to know. It’s a shame that this information only appeared recently instead of in the months before release to prevent this forum’s explosion.

8% increase per item. 26% increase for whole set. This is going by stat budget math others have put much work into already to compute. 26% is a massive change in gear power. This not even factoring in how much they are buffin legendaries. You scoff at such marginal increases but when you put it all together, it may very well trump any rune combination if you are focusing on only pure stats in those slots (like I do). Best part is you get an extra slot to help you in PvE and whos to say they won’t eventually cave in, letting you use runes there in the future.

Wrong because those “estimates” do not account for upgrade slots….

8% comes from non-infused Ascended Ring versus fully upgraded Exotic Ring.

I wonder how much more once infusion comes in (worse: if they add sigil/rune slot to Ascended ones).

Whoever did that math then is totally wrong…. because the exotic items stats mixed with the upgrade only add about anywhere around 2-5 per stat…. also the infusion slot will only include resistances to conditions like Agony nothing more…. do your own research before arguing don’t use other peoples….

Please make sure to re-read the section of the blog again regarding infusions. It is not limited nor is it intended to be limited to just Agony
“There are multiple types of Infusions and Infusion slots. In November, we’ll introduce Offensive, Defensive, and Omni Infusions of Fine rarity from new Mystic Forge recipes”

In the update we’ll be receiving 3 types and they are alluding to even more infusion types. Or are you saying that the Offensive infusion will attack Agnoy a status debuff?

Well fine then… I was wrong but until we see what the stats are on infusions there is no reason to complain about them.

While I agree we shouldn’t be running around shouting the sky is falling, it is naive to think that we shouldn’t be complaining about it now. Expressing our concerns and complaints prior to letting them settle and become permanent is vastly as important as not breaking out the torches and the pitchforks. Most complaints are grounded on the same fact that there is no information leaving us to wildly guess, speculate, and bump around in the dark hoping to find reassurance.

I had previously expressed elsewhere that humans in general plan how they spend and invest their time. The current situation is that right now everyone is standing at an unknown vs a known. The known was that obtaining Exotics was supposed to be the last of it and that the time spent and invested would pay off in the future. Currently it is unknown if that still holds true since statistically it doesn’t seem so and Anet is not confirming that it’s merely a growing pain in an attempt to rectify an oversight. Since everyone has to gauge on their own how they are going to spend their time, their out cries are greatly justified since they currently are being lead to believe that the previous 3 months have been a waste.

They are adding vertical progression when they bodly stated GW2 would only be horizontal. That is essentially throwing 5 years of promises right out the window.

Now that the gate has been opened, so begins the treadmill.

Shall I start digging up the direct dev quotes and vids? Or maybe put some effort in and go through that 8k+ post thread and see them there for yourselves. It’s right there in print for all to see.

For starters that “8k post thread” is a large group of the same crybabies crying over and over again I’ve looked over it…. Second off Just in today : "Our goal is not to create a gear treadmill. Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from exotic up to legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two. " If you still say that that means nothing all you have is an opinion not facts…. so come back with proof…

Alright… I’ll bite. If the goal is to create a proper progression from point A to Point C why not create a Point B? All they did was create a Point A to Point C again as Exotics will not be on the same standing ground as both Ascended or Legendaries. In other words if the goal was to create a bridge between the poor man’s armor and the rich man’s armor why not just create a middle class armor? Why create another level for the poor man’s armor (Ascended) to compete with the rich man’s armor (Legendary)?

What I don’t really understand is why everyone is calling this a “gear treadmill”. If I’m not mistaken, a tier above “exotic” already exists in the original build of the game (legendaries). There is currently a massive gap (progression-wise) between standard exotics and legendaries, and the “Gift” exotics don’t help much. The ascended stat improvements seem marginal at best (likely not affecting game balance outside of Fractals in any meaningful way), and Anet has stated that legendaries will be boosted to remain the “best” tier. If everyone is already working towards a legendary, the established “ceiling” for in-game progression, and existing legendaries get upgraded, all this update really does is even out the progression curve a bit.

Legendaries are not higher in tier than Exotics currently. They will be when the next tier Ascended comes out and they will be bumped up. So no…. there isn’t a current higher tier as Legendaries = Exotics.

You are aware that humans and people plan their time correct? Time is usually planned with the future in mind. So if I am going to determine if my time is better invested in this game or another I think I do have the right to ask the hard questions now and complain now, then realize 3 months down that line that I’ve wasted all that time that could have been better spent.

Also don’t think that they are not doing it on purpose to not only create a profitable chance but also to protect themselves for any future changes. They are and will forever be a profit driven gaming company and thus will always do things for their best interest only, including leaving any loop holes that they can jump into if the need so arises.

And what exactly do you think is happening? They are not motivated because they are now being cautious. If time is money and they have to consider how they spend it well, don’t you think they’re going to pass on currently available content until the armors are released? They’re in the state of “Why bother?” when there isn’t enough information. Will their time have been wasted? Will it be worth it?

Funny that you are up in arms and telling them to ‘wait and see’ yet that is what they are doing. Waiting and seeing if they should invest any time in doing anything at all.

People aren’t over reacting, they are just making it perfectly clear to A-net what they think about this “addition”.

Maybe it wont stop this ‘ascended’ tier, but the outcry may hopefully stop any further tiers being introduced

There’s nothing to stop. They have already said:

“Our goal is not to create a gear treadmill. Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from exotic up to legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two. We will slowly add the remaining ascended gear items and legendary items in future updates to allow people time to acquire them as we add exciting new content that deserves exciting rewards. We will not be adding a new tier of gear every 3 months that we expect everyone to chase after and then get the next set and so on.”

If the only way to get the gear is through the dungeon, then bad Anet no bisect. You guys finally broke the stupid gear-grinding-dungeon treadmill I hated. Don’t make me run a dungeon to get best in slot gear when I don’t want to! Give me alternatives just like you did with day one, can some one smack the intern that thought of this?

They didn’t say it was only going to be obtainable through the dungeon… Currently they are only releasing rings and backpacks of which they can be obtained:

“Players will be able to acquire Ascended Rings in the Fractals of the Mists dungeon, and Ascended items worn on the back can be acquired through special Mystic Forge recipes.”

Eventually they are planning to bring out armor but they haven’t said exactly how it’s going to be gotten just that it would be tied to the new content:

“As we release more new end game content in the future, you’ll see more Infusions and Ascended item types being added to the game. […]
As we introduce the new high-level content, we’ll also roll out complimentary Ascended and Legendary items (to say nothing of the other rewards you can earn by playing the content).”

good god you people cant read !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i am amazed there so so many that cant comprehend what Anet is doing

OK FOR THOSE THAT HAVE NO CLUE.

1. There is no stat increase !!!!!! they took away the upgrade slot and put the points that you would have gotten from the upgrade slot into the main stats of the item!
that is right Ascended armor is worse then exotic as it is not as customizable as normal armor!

2. Infusion slot is for negating a new condition call Agony that will only be in this dungeon! that is right it is worthless in WvW or any place outside this dungeon.

3. getting exotic gear is easy and is full customizable with upgrade slots, Ascended armor is hard to get is less useful as real exotic gear outside of this dungeon.

4. this is a cool great new dungeon , it is scalable for the progression players but none of it is any use outside of this one dungeon. it will allow player to brag about i hit 27th level of infusion !!! woot for me but as infusion does nothing outside of the dungeon why would a WvW player even care ?

this is like a PVE dungeon version of the PVP ranking , i think its great .

False. Let’s re-read the blog shall we? I shall disprove your points with facts straight out of the horse’s mouth.

“Eventually, you’ll be able to kit yourself out with a full set of Ascended gear and high end Infusions to help give you the edge in end game content.”

Not an increase? Why then would they say it’s to give me an edge on end game content?

“You’ll also see more Legendary items in the future and an update to our existing Legendary weapons. Legendary items were always intended to be on par with other “best-in-slot” items. So fear not, all existing Legendary weapons, which are currently on par with Exotics, will be upgraded to be on par with Ascended weapons at the same time that we add Ascended weapons to the game. Thus Legendaries will remain “best-in-slot” items.”

Ok let’s do some math with words! It’s called the pathogram theory and this is how it works! If A = B and B = C then A = C. So if Legendaries are the best-in-slot items and they are going to mimic/reflect Ascended weapons wouldn’t that mean that Ascended weapons are also the best-in-slot items? Hmm… sounds to me like a stat increase!

Well what would you suggest is a better gap filler? The power of legendaries had to go up cause they were on par with exotics but were 300 times harder to get then exotics to the point it could take years. It alludes to several levels of infusions not ascended armor (there is 4 levels of ascended armor stated already and that is all there is going to be). There is going to multilevel of infusions much the same as there is multilevel of infusions. And if they added new gear that was just cosmetic would you have really gone for them? or would you have just choosen the one type and not cared about the new armor? Legendaries now have to be on par with ascended gear rather then exotic.

Since you’re thread got merged… I’ll just continue here.

Regarding to their allusions, I concede it could be taken as levels of infusions and not Ascended armors BUT it also doesn’t state it specifically is just related to infusions so at this point. I’ll agree to disagree simply because it’s too vague to argue otherwise.

The post right below my response had a gap filler that was already used in GW1. My suggestion is why not make it entirely cosmetic armor that is a between the two? Harder than Exotics but easier than Legendaries… I mean that’s the point right? That was their intention as they themselves have stated. Currently there is no difference between Exotics and Legendaries except the ease of obtaining them. So why were the increase in stats necessary? Why couldn’t it have been a set of armor that has the same stats as all three that just required work, effort, and skill without changing their core concepts? i.e. Poor man’s armor, middle class armor, and Rich man’s armor. Again I reiterate wasn’t that their point in introducing this armor set in the first place? A bridge between the two? Why was effort suddenly thrown out the window and replaced with a step up? I mean according to them it’s both a gap filler AND a power up. “Eventually, you’ll be able to kit yourself out with a full set of Ascended gear and high end Infusions to help give you the edge in end game content.”

Also where does it say that Legendaries had to get a power increase just because they were harder to obtain? It was a prestige item, cosmetic only and was going to be grindy. They stated all this up front. Now Legendaries are setting a precedence to being much more viable then just cosmetic. As quoted from their blog “Legendary items were always intended to be on par with other “best-in-slot” items.” Why the need to create another tier of ‘better’ armor? That not only goes against their prior objections but makes no sense. Better stated armor =/= gap filler. It’s just better armor stats. That is all.

Perhaps I would have, perhaps not. It all depends on my taste and how the armor would have looked if it was cosmetic. And don’t think that cosmetic doesn’t have anything to do with anything. Look at TF2 and all their hats. Look at the Halloween Lengendary reskins. Look at how popular customization is in just about every other game out there. People love to look good and would do anything to do so. Disregarding the sheer amount of people that love to deck themselves out with different looking armors is naive.

Also they could have appealed to the crowd that obtains things for their status and not for visual aesthetics. Created of different rarity of armors cosmetically instead of statistically would have been a better option than this.

Its not a gear trendmill guys really. The gear is fitting in right between Exotic and Legendary. The goal of this was due to the “Legendary wall” that people kept smashing their faces into. There was such a gap between Legendary and Exotic it was a hindsight by Anet. They didnt think people would hit the wall as fast as they did so they are adding the new tier to relieve some of the tension and make people believe that they are progressing. The armour (when it comes out) will be less useful then exotics in PVP and WvW due to the lack of status effects other then defending against agony which is a PVE only condition. So whats the problem with them fixing a design mistake they made when making the tiers. Whats the difference if they had added the tier before launch? And its not a gear trendmill for the people who have legendary already cause they already have the top gear. A gear trendmill suggests a even stronger tier then the top tier already. Which isnt true considering Legendary is still the top tier.

While I can understand that in hindsight they might go “Oops! Too big a gap!” But was there really no other better way that would have decreased that gap without the introduction of new gear with higher stats? Couldn’t it have just been new gear? Why raise the stats of legendaries if it’s just supposed to be a gap filler? Also how many more gap fillers are we going to get? Why does the journal allude to several ‘levels’ if it’s just one level?

Do you see where this is going? Because Anet went back on their words why should we believe them now?

Thoughts on Ascended Gear? [Merged threads]

pittb, I understand what you’re saying but that is currently. Don’t forget that the blog indicated that they are also going to make it viable to be decked out in full armor too. It’s not a slippery slop argument… they’re going to do it.

How this effects PvE is just as much my concern as it affects W3 since I play both equally as much. I haven’t completed my Orr sections for the map completion yet, but since many of the skill points are attached to temples, how many people are actually going to do them if they plan to skip from Exotics to Ascended? The temples (when not bugged) do require a bit of people and it’s already hard to find them without the added gear stat increase.

So not only does this affect my W3 experience slightly, but if people are already skipping Rares from Masterwork to Exotic, what is so hard to believe that people will skip from Rare to Ascended or Masterwork to Ascended? What then happens when enough people skip the Exotics that it actually affects group areas where Exotics are an added objective? How is that going to affect the Exotic market and crafting?

It’s more complicated a scenario than just a few people complaining about their W3 issues. There’s PvE issues too that will feel the effects of a tier of armor that will make Exotics an unnecessary time sink.

We also still don’t even know how it’s going to work with crafting. Are they going to add a new tier to crafting too so that once you reach past 400 you can craft Ascended gear? Are they going to leave it 400 then and making crafting worthless to do except if you want some extra Exp?

While I agree freaking out about something we don’t have enough information on is… silly. I do think there are a lot of unknowns that can effect a variety of people and they way they play the game. This new armor could very well be a game changer it may not be but Anet isn’t helping anyone by not being clear with what their exact intentions are regarding this and how it’s going to affect future content updates. Are we to except the gear ceiling to be raised again? I mean if they are making the statement now that Legendaries are the top spot of gear why should we do anything but work towards that and that only just so we can always be in top gear and not have to worry about gear tiering anymore?

At what point do we, as players, stop worrying that when we finish collecting a set that we won’t have to start the process all over again? I ask this because Anet said they wouldn’t do that yet they did, so what is to stop them from doing again and again and again? Where do we as players trust Anet won’t just do it again to continue to retain a player base that is not what their original goal was to retain?

Hello all! I’m not a frequenter of the forums and mainly skim them when I have a chance. Yesterday I bought the helm for my exotic set and am 2 pieces away from the full thing. Today I had urge to check out if there was any new info on the upcoming updates for the Lost Shores only to see that the forum has exploded over these new Ascended gears. Not only am I thoroughly confused, but I’m also concerned that I just wasted 42k karma on something that I may not even need in a few days times.

Between reading the released article and the forum posters’ assumptions… I’d like to seriously ask. Is it worth me even trying for the last 2 pieces of Exotic armor? I didn’t buy them with their ‘good’ looks in mind (I already have the look I want just waiting to transmute) so I don’t want to keep pouring time into karma farming if it’s going to be… well unnecessary. I also want to know if I should hurry up and complete the Orr zones before no one wants to do the temples anymore.

For the record I do consider myself a casual player. I’ve been lvl 80 for about a month now and as you can see I’m not done with my Exotics. I’m not even done with my personal story or have 100% map completion. I don’t even have any craft to lvl 400 yet (close at 318 but not there). I play almost every day for at least 2 to 4 hours between PvE and W3.

While I realize that the content hasn’t come out yet, with all the speculation going around for the armor as much as against the armor, I want to know from both sides a few things:

1. Would Exotics even be worth it with the prospect of Ascended gear being better stats (even if slight it does make a difference i.e. a penny more is still an increase and more than nothing at all)? In other words why would Ascended gear not phase out Exotics like exotics phased out rares?

2. How would this effect map completions? Right now it’s very hard to complete some zones due to bugs (Temple of Balthazer I’m looking at you) but I’m finding at lvl 80 it’s hard to complete because there’s never enough people running around in Orr. If temples require a sheer amount of people to complete them and if the above question holds, what is going to stop people from running temples if exotics are no longer worth it?

3. How will this effect my W3 experience and effectiveness? There’s already a current disparity with gear scaling in W3 (which is why I’m even after the exotics) if Ascended gear is better than Exotics will this continue to prevail?

Remember that currently this is all speculation but since the Pro and Anti camps are speculating I’d thought I’d too speculate what this means for me and others like me that have roughly the same questions that does effect our current time spent.

From my understanding… it’s bugged on Yak’s bend as well. I just want my armor so I’m afraid to transfer to a sever that won’t have it up or it’s bugged and I can’t transfer again until 5 days later. ;__;

I agree. The jumping puzzle has been the best thing through this event so far! I loved it, got mad at it, cheered for others, and just overall had a ton of fun with it. Thanks devs! It really is the best thing in the event so far.

In my view, complaints about design isn't "OMG NERF" whining.

And people have a right to come to these forums, and speak their minds about it, without being bullied by other people, who seem to think “OMG L2P” is the answer to all the questions of life, universe and everything.

What if what’s on my mind is that you should L2P (OMG optional)? Do I still have the right to speak my mind? Or am I only allowed to speak my mind when the content of my mind suits what you wish to hear? And in general does your right to speak your mind also include the right of forcing me to have to listen to what I have to say, or for that matter treat it with any type of respect or consideration?

You do know there is a difference between speaking your opinion and attacking someone’s opinion right?

Here let me give you an example of how to speak your mind without attacking someone else!

“I think the jumping puzzle is fine the way it is. I have not found any problem with the camera angles or anything else. Other players have been generally amazing in my experience when going through and do not bother me in the slightest when jumping. Overall it was very fun and I enjoyed it! I hope for more jumping puzzles like this one in the future!”

See that shows that you can think for yourself, have your own opinion on something, AND you don’t attack a person’s opinion with your opinion. THE MORE YOU KNOW.

I am going to repost this video article again so that those on both sides of the fence can learn something from it. Times have changed and with it the method of the way consumers have to deal with these changes.

Understand that whining and crying IS more effective than boycotting, denying them money in the video game industry where people buy garbage and eat it up like it was the next best thing since sliced bread.

This however has no bearings on how I feel about the entire event.
