NPC's in story mode dungeons

Oh brave Logan! Oh mighty Rytlock! … Oh you were knocked senseless by a random bandit/flame charr/anything…

The story mode dungeons are great at what they do.. they move the story forward and give us alot more information into the heroes of Destiny’s Edge.. but they are terrible at fighting, they drop like flies!

Here is my suggestion:

1) make them take no damage, deal no damage.. and be unable to block spells from foes, still have them fight alongside you.. maybe beef up there spell effects or use there battle cries (voice stuff) more often.

Now with that dealt with..

2) introduce a random event that only triggers when you are in combat where our hero/heroine is cut down and cries for help, give the players 30 seconds or so to revive them during combat, if they win the event they earn karma etc.. and the hero/heroine rises to there feet with a mighty roar and buffs the group with some might!

If you fail the event, the hero is knocked out cold and can auto ress ala ranger pets once combat is over.

Now I suggest this, because they should feel like mighty heroes when we play alongside them in the story.. and the event idea is a way to teach newer players the importance of picking up downed players in the heat of combat.. and since the story mode dungeons are introductions to doing harder explorable content, teaching new people to pick up the unfortunate fallen is probably no bad thing.

As it stands.. watching them get clobbered while your team mops the floor with everything just looks bad.

Kohler is a simple dodge check.. it is asking if you understand how to use this key mechanic, many abilitys on weapons and utilities can make this much easier.. for example smoke screen, magnetic aura.. wall of reflection.. the Aegis virtue and any utility that grants it to your team, all these things make Kohler very sad indeed.

The Alpha creation is a tricky fight, i’d say try to factor in getting the vigor boon from somewhere within your group.. the hardest part is managing your dodge bar in my opinion, really easy to make a wrong move i’ll admit

While I found many good insights and points throughout this thread.. at the end of the day gw2 is a month old.. and wvwvw is even younger, it’s barely past the point of being able to match up servers together properly (fairly).. Dark age of camelot took time to grow into what it became, peoples expectations are just way to high, allow the game to grow a bit.. Anet clearly haven’t rolled everything out yet in terms of server matching or even how long the matches will last

So Just chill :p

The real worry: is buying Gold ever going to be worth it?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ruggy.7819

I feel that buying gold in the game is worthless.

It’s been one month pretty much.. and I have found it easier and easier to make gold in the game, it’s at the point that 10/15 minutes before I log off.. I jump on the AH, buy and sell.. go to sleep and wake up with money waiting to be picked up.. ontop of playing wvw, running a explorable path.. it’s all adding up pretty fast.

Then the next problem is what to even spend it on? All I can really see is t3 culture armour and the commander book.. everything else is dirt cheap in this game.

I traded gold into gems.. got a few goodies like a character slot.. now i’m just saving gold for a rainy day.

What do you guys/gals spend it on?

Sounds like a bunch of people who didn’t learn how to play there profession in the time it took to get for 1 to 70

You see a mining node? No you shouldn’t be able to walk around all the mobs and get your juicy ore.. yes the threat of being overwhelmed is high, plan ahead.. change your build.. use different weapons if need be. You are playing in the final zones of the game it isn’t supposed to be easy.. it’s supposed to constantly challenge you.. and the challenge in this game comes from combat.

Anet told us Orr wasn’t like the rest of the game and yeah it really is.. I really hope they don’t bend and change what they have built to suit people who would rather play the game half asleep.. by the lore of the world this place should be utterly crawling with risen and be completely inhospitable for people to be in.

It tends to be the minority who post stuff on forums.. so I hope thats all this thread is really, sad to see though.

Ruggy.7819

I’m surprised to see this thread still going strong, if this kind of build is so op.. why don’t highly skilled 5v5 spvp teams run them?

Because these one trick pony style of builds are EASILY avoidable.. you might get caught out once, after that you just resort to the methods you have available to avoid this stuff.. hundred blades + frenzy is actually freaking hard to land on a good player.. same goes for pistol whip + haste, if you load up on venoms you are throwing ALL of your eggs into one basket.

If you are fine with that, go ahead.. you will catch out bad players and think you are awesome, it doesn’t work on everyone.

By the time I reached the end of the puzzle I was 18 sticks of butter and 14 bars of chocolate richer.

All anyone has to do is mash dodge.. you cannot chain stun someone with pistol whip, even with haste up.. if they stand still and take all those stuns/hits they are bad.

Against anyone with there wits about them.. you will land that first stun and get some damage in, after that you will be burning steal/shadowstep.. other mobility to get near them again to get the next one off

I play a sword/pistol thief as well.. the OP’s post isn’t entirely accurate, I will agree that the skill hits freaking hard though! (all melee, channeled abilities seem to hit very hard.. probably because it in turn is so hard to keep players standing in them)

1 + 2) shadow refuge heals allies and yourself, it is also a combo field which will enable life steal on ranged attacks.

You can trait stealth so it applies regen to yourself and allies.

3) You can trait stealth to remove conditions, the shadow return ability for the sword and shadowstep removes conditions.. the sword skill can be used repeatedly if needed.

4) I think you are right here, removing conditions from allies is something the thief can’t do.

Open your mind a little when it comes to making a build to take on dungeons, you can avoid alot of the ‘unbelievable’ damage with the right tools at hand.

Back in the day, mmo’s weren’t all about loot.. then one day an mmo arrived to rule them all.. and 7/8 years later players of these kinds of games have become so used to that standardised way of playing that they can’t accept anything else.

Use condition damage on them, don’t care if they can remove it they can’t do it forever.

Use skills that strip buffs, simple and effective.

The low base health is the kitten in the armour, guardians try to cover it up with condition removal which is of course correct but you can overwhelm a guardian pretty easily with mass conditions.

For people running direct damage builds.. well i’d say bring a friend, because defensive guardians arekittenhard to kill with direct damage

Some ideas regarding Dynamic events

in Dynamic Events

Posted by: Ruggy.7819

Ruggy.7819

having seen the events that go down in Orr now, i’ve started to think about how the game handles these events in terms of scaling.. heres a few things I came up with.

I think in the later part of the game, where many people will end up playing, the events need to scale a little harder, a system that upgrades monsters to veterans and champions based on how many players are actively taking part in the combat (players buffing/healing players would contribute to this too, not just damage) would make some sense.. then have the event adjust it’s numbers every minute or so based on the active combatants.

5 players start an event.. mobs scale to suit, 4 more players enter the area and join in.. a minute later the event checks how many active people are taking part and starts replacing the basic monsters with veteran monsters with health/damage scaled to suit 9 players.

Then 2 players decide to move on before the event is finished leaving 7 players.. a minute later the event checks again and adjusts the numbers on it’s creatures to suit.

Events with loads of players could spawn champions with meaningful health pools and damage enough to actually kill players on a regular basis.. if people leave just scale the numbers down so that the remaining players are challenged but not stomped to the ground.

Sorry if this is longwinded/rambling.. all i’m saying is that the events in the later portion of the game don’t make much sense, enemies are aoe’d into dust the moment they are attackable.. people are literally fighting over who can leash them first and do enough damage to get there loot.. I doubt this is what Anet had planned for the battle for Orr.

I wish you had made your comparison of a massively complex mmo, with multiple economies and multiple systems of mechanics that players have access to.. to league of legends earlier in your post.

So I could have stopped reading earlier. If you could abuse lol in the same way players have in this game Riot would clamp down on it in the blink of an eye.. I don’t think it has anything to do with how they treat there player base.. they are entirely different.

Come on now.. some people were doing CoF 40 times + per day.. it was broken and you should be HAPPY that they fixed it, that gear isn’t stuff people are meant to obtain in a matter of days.. if you could get any full armour set in a matter of days then well, after MATTER OF DAYS people would be yelling the game has no endgame content.. it’s by design that it’ll take ages.

Just do a CoF run every couple of days.. guess what, that gear isn’t going anywhere.. you will get it.

This game is an MMO afterall, if you think any MMO can survive without any timesink type content then you are kidding yourself.

This kind of stuff was a staple of design in gw1.. and people were okay with it.

Timesink content doesn’t have to mean you have to figure out the most efficient method to farm and then do that and nothing but that until you reach your goal, that is plain stupid.. chill out, play the game.. theres no sub even.. you can drop this and go play something else for 2 months.. come back and still obtain your CoF gear!

Long CD Elites In GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ruggy.7819

What are you actually complaining about? The fact that some have longer cooldowns then others?

The elite skills often require some synergy to get the most out of them, some do.. some don’t.. it’s called Variety.

Basilisk venom can be extremely potent if you make a build around it.. granting allies this venom is freaking lethal :P Meanwhile Thieves guild can be slotted into many types of builds.. but it is easily avoidable at the same time.

I don’t mind elites having long cooldowns.. they are not really that important unless you have built your entire build around it, which tends to work best with the lower CD elites.

Ruggy.7819

I think it depends on how you are going to play, if you are going to play solo/in small groups then D/D is probably the go to option.. the threat of massive backstabs can turn around a small skirmish in the matter of moments.. and it’s sick 1v1

If you are going to be running with a big group often, where 1v1 is less important.. a more support focused P/D build might work, applying conditions with the pistol while using the dagger to cripple/stealth for the sneak attack when needed.. can even go the route of venoms and apply them to allies with a build like that.

I think regardless of what you pick.. your 2nd weapon slot should be shortbow.. it is god like for mobility around the massive maps, great for defending/attacking in a siege.

I don’t think a sword/dagger or sword/pistol build is good in wvw.. with so many players around getting your pistol whip interupted is going to happen.. being rooted during that skill will get your killed alot as well

hope that helps.

in pve, the most effective way i’ve found of using smoke bomb was to wait until you can use both skills in unison.

Teleport as far away as possible from attacking mobs and smoke bomb.. usually due to the distance gained the mobs will lose agro and you will be able to rally.

I don’t think it’s a good ability at all in pve.. but really, getting downed is a bad place to be regardless of what class you are

Abuse blind and stealth like a boss.

You can face tank entire groups if you manage your resource correctly and your stealth based utility skills, you still have to play very carefully.. aoe attacks are the bane of your existances so mobility and some quick thinking are still key

I play a sword/pistol > shortbow thief in dungeons.. with traits that grant bonuses when I stealth (gives initiative/etc) and when I steal (more initiative/buffs).. stuff like blinding powder/shadow refuge/smoke screen/scorp wire are all brilliant in the right situation.

I really enjoyed my story quests in this zone and I feel that the dynamic events that take place here were really well done too, the pirate island DE is really comical and on the eastern side there are a few really nice chaining DE’s that take you up and down the land with alot of NPC chatter inbetween

Noticed three times playing today, players from my own world who are in guilds from the opposing worlds we are supposed to be fighting, these guys were standing around at key locations.. never taking part in any fighting and obviously relaying information via TS/vent to there guild.

What makes this worse is we are already massively outnumbered against the worlds we have been matched up against, so we are trying to play with fewer people and some of those people being spies for massive guilds on the other worlds.

This sucks Anet, bring on those paid server transfers please and remove the gems cost and make it go straight on a credit card or something, these massive guilds will have no issue paying a couple of gold in gems to spy on opponents.

The story and choices we make

in Personal Story

Ruggy.7819

The personal story has been bothering me quite a bit.

1. The choices we make don’t really make any difference to what goes on.
Early in the game I noticed one time in my home instance something that changed due to a choice I made.

Later in the story when you are given critical choices.. it doesn’t really mean anything since you will never hear about the other choices you didn’t pick, it’s like the story is being rushed forward so there is no time to even find out what might have happened.. if there is no consequences to these massive choices you make later on in the game then what is the point really?

2. Trahearne pretty much hijacks your ‘personal’ story.. it’s as if you hit level 50, head to claw island and from then onwards it’s no longer a story about your character.. you are just a sidekick to this mary sue of a character who has about as much personality as a potato.

I really feel like Anet missed a beat with how they handled the story.. while it is long and full of different locations/lore/characters and such, the mechanics behind the way it is told are flawed in my eyes.. it felt rushed and very forced past level 50.. and even before that the ‘choices’ were already pointless.

Thief has insane survivability if you play it right, in pvp you can build an evade/stealth/blinding monster that is VERY hard to lock down

If you want constructive answers make a constructive argument.

Did you think the swamp heart bad because:

1) each thing you did didn’t fill the bar enough?
2) not enough monsters/items in the area?
3) dynamic events in the area should include heart items/monsters at all times?

and so on.

People will read your original post and think you are just whining, you need to word it more clearly.

Maybe there is something wrong with that specific heart? I didn’t have any issues myself though.. I feel that if you are trying to get 100% world completion you need to take the rough as well as the smooth, theres no hurry to get there so just take your time.. regardless of whether the heart is ‘tedious’ or not.

The pistol offhand is a godsend for survivability in melee, you get a daze shot if you see something dangerous winding up and even better.. the blackpowder aoe blind which turns many melee fights into trivial cakewalks for your thief

Having one or two ways to stealth yourself (it’ll make the mobs retarget someone else) is really key as well if you get some unwanted attention, it’s also a fantastic way to help ress a friendly who has been downed (especially if you can stealth them too!)

Thief in dungeons is like walking a fine edge.. if you are playing it right you barely get touched, make a mistake and you can be down pretty fast though.. it’s exciting in my opinion, as it’s down to your own management of skills whether you win or lose.
