I actually did a very close build to what you did Fura early on and found the sustained regen combined with 40% Mitigation (70% with BArkskin before protection) served me much better than the extra hits…
Also find trying to push our damage high is lipstick on a pig compared to better suited classes. I stopped fighting Anet’s plan and try to synergize with the pet a bit more.
Hybrid of PTV/Cleric, no condi damage and no crit rate/dam….all about bunker (20K hits/2K toughness/3K Armor/1000 healing (3 passive regens) Heavy Vigor/Regen/protection.
2K Power/3K attack and the Pet for DPS and wear em out..
Fura hahah! No it was 7 Levis at 1.5 cap into 11 seconds….Celerity didnt help on the Reaver like others..
What was your Valks name Xsorus? Do you remember my Reaver/Merc/Mini as I was pretty known in the solo community.
From what I understand my 25% duration Reaver temp (7 Levi Slams) is what got the class nerfed, had 2 buds who were TLs and they told me a week before the Levi got chained that my temp prompted the Nerf as RR1 REavers wearing my setup were generating a TON of feedback and complaints running around owning high RR toons….ah the good old days.
I had a website called Kalotemps.com way back where people would put in requests and I would build them custom temps for Plat…made a killing =D
Ha Blackbird, I remember Schado Fox the Infi!!! I had LE on my Reaver 6 years back and ended up with 1000+ on both Mini and MErc but didnt stay long enough for LE titles on them.
Remember with the bunker build you can trait for high DPS from pets to compliment your “steady” DPS….it’s a different game than DAoC so it cant be measured directly.
Before Ywain I was on Killibury and Tintagel. Hung up the Reaver after Killi as nobody would fight him any more = (

I was Alb mainly…had a 12L1 Reaver, Kalorian…an 11L1 Minstrel , Dalorian (petless Tankstrel!) and a 10L1 Saracen Thrust Mercenary, Kilorian….

As for your post…you can do a decent DPS build with high toughness but the second you want to get Regen in there then the DPS focus moves from you to your Pet
Haha Cempa, that made me chuckle, happy you’re back on the Ranger and tried it out.
I find at times that the build makes me a little bit arrogant (not in the sense I am sure to win but more in the sense that I am sure I wont lose) and over confident….need to show a bit more discipline >.<
After a couple of weeks straight of running this I find It’s so good in 1v1s that you begin to take it for granted

I might try your build, but if I do, I’ll probably go Runes of Melandru and the food that reduces Condition Duration. I understand your rune and food choice, but I don’t like putting all my eggs in one basket, and condition removal lately has been awesome since there are so many Condition Damage Builds lately, and fewer burst builds.
Great work on the buid by the way.
Just a heads up, this build has condition removals built in. Four conditions removed every ten seconds (and the removal timing is independent of when conditions are stacked). Also if it gets real bad, you can pop the signet for instant removal.
Still, to each their own. I would strongly suggest using fern hound if you do use Melandru though because you will be missing out on a lot of regeneration, and that’s a HUGE part of the build.
I havn’t played my Ranger in a very, very long time. Why Troll Ungent over healing spring, and if you’re wanting to max out regens, why not Runes of the Dolyak?
Dolyak Runes heal for 30/sec…and are NOT modified by Healing…the Regens and Healing from Dwayna are superior unless you lack toughness.
The dodges aren’t randomly timed….I know my Endo regen rate quite well and use dodges to bridge to HoT and provide Protection boon to mitigate, I gain 50% Endo on weapon swap with Energy Runes…often after 2 dodges I swap weapon and get a Third Dodge…thats ~4 seconds of unanswered regen and helps sustain me.
If any melee worth his salt will drop me then BG/SoR are devoid of them as the only thing I lose to is a Mesmer (Confusion) or being out manned.

That’s not true. It’ll be a very long fight and either player can easily reset the fight/run away… but a good ranger won’t destroy a confusion mesmer. In fact, the mesmer will usually win if it goes uninterrupted for long enough.
I got a good laugh out of this. I met a ranger in WvW the other day and it was definitely a long battle (I’m the confusion mesmer in question). We went back and forth never breaking combat on land. Ended up in the water at the SE camp on borderlands. I was able to down him in the water, but couldn’t finish him off before his pet got him back up, which he did twice. Finally an ally showed up, but we still struggled. Quaggan guards showed up too, and between the whole lot of us, we killed him.
I know virtually nothing about Rangers’ abilities, but you better believe I’ve started reading up on those.
What Server you on? Sounds an awful lot like a fight I had 2 days back….was the Ranger a Silvari in Cultural Armor with Owl/Raven (Jellyfish/Armorfish in the Water)
I had as much fun chatting afterwards as the fight itself, The Mesmer said to my after “Your Ranger is INSANE” “Holy Crap are you Tanky”

I like my Bunker build for WvW. I have a couple of Vids and have engaged in discussions on the subject on these boards. Kinda do things a little against the grain but I am having a Ton of Fun in 1v1 and 1vX situations. Not the Typical Condition/HEaling setup but somewhat similar in Theory
I’m already tinkering with GS in PvE to get used to it….but it’s sadly not how I envisioned my Rangers play so I keep going back to whats comfy (My Longbow)

I solo roam and small man with guildies…jump into the Zerg fights opportunistically. Still finding WvW much fun as the adrenaline rush of a good 1v1 and 1v2 is what I am looking for.
I made this as a vid to demonstrate survival in the build and showed a few peeps here. It was suggested by a couple of them I post this for others to see.
Here’s a little 10 min skirmish (sped up first half) vs a Mesmer and a pair of thieves. The grouped me after and chatted a bit, no accusations of hacking this time though! Good fun!!!
Mesmer even gave props saying they saw a Ranger coming and thought “Easy kill” in his own words “We were so wrong”
Survival Clip I put together vs a Mesmer and 2 Thieves….I only get a single stomp as their escapes are ridiculous but I stand in with them in two sequences for over 10 mins, only the first half is speed up so fast as there is now stomp. We don’t bunker well?
A single video of game play is virtually ignorable as evidence. Lightning does strike. Miracles do happen. No one argues against that. Other classes still bunker better than we do. Other classes bring more group utility. Other classes hit harder and last longer. They also have real, viable escapes. The ranger doesn’t have any disengage skills. You can run them down easy. Other classes are better than the ranger.
IF it makes you feel better keep assuming this is an isolated fight….its far closer to the norm than the exception. /Cheers!

^^ To put my statement in proper context, I am NOT a condition build, or a trapper…actually I am what most on these boards consider to be non viable build with LB/SB
BM/Toughness/Healing-Regen/Hits/Vigor/White Damage (no Crit or Crit dam) (Passive Bunker)
Conditions are the best way to deal with high regen tanks builds. Poison, confusion, and burns do more damage than the regen boon. Also if they are using cleric gear they will have low hp but high armor so a few conditions, stuns and you have a dead tank. If you do not have a poison skill you can use sigil of doom(assuming you are swapping weapons alot).
In those Ranger builds there are passive Health/sec (Natural Healing/Signet of the Wild) that can be giving the build ~350-450 health/sec in addition to the Regens (which always seem to be up)….the passives cant be stripped only diminished with Poison. Add in Troll Unguent for ~1K/sec for 10/25 seconds and you have a very difficult to drop target when you consider high toughness as well.
Yup yup…I almost feel sorry for them on LB/SB as they are quite manageable with cripples, snares, knock backs…very rare if ever they get their mitts on me…with my regen build I dont even try to avoid them anymore…I just DPS them down right in their face.
I am sorry but all this negative feedback is really ridiculous. Yes, Rangers have a few weak aspects. Here’s a thought…build around what WE DO WELL not what we don’t!
Spirits = Crap: Dont build around them
Glass Cannon = Less than other classes, if you want huge DPS…dont look to Ranger
Regen: We do this very well!
Bunker: We do this very well!
Just a couple of examples…..we have a class that requires a bit more thought, if you are not willing to invest the time and testing to sort the crap from the gravy then you should not play Ranger. Once setup right they are a formidable class outside of Dungeons…
I PVE/WVW exclusively on my Ranger and handle myself quite well, I see many other Rangers doing as I have. Taking the time to know their class and having success…Sol, Xsorus, Faux, Ryu to name a few (there are many more)
I have said this countless time on these boards. Take the time to find an angle/play style that suits you….build for it and spec for it and then refine until you are pleased.
Then go forth and PWN!

Shameless self bump to my most recent dueling video. Warrior can’t touch this. Rangers, you are good. Just look beyond your regular cookie-cutter builds, and needless tendency for berserker gear. Also, try to consider the viability of close-medium range weaponsets.

Confusion, that’s about it…most other fights are stalemates or a win for the Bunker Regen Ranger…
The only thing lacking on it is the Auto attack, the other skills have their uses.

Well in this situation the two decided to let you keep your elite up for whatever reason. Generally in WvW Rangers have a lot of room to run around making it easy for them to kite.

In that video you pompt us to look at your health bar, did yo take a moment to look at theirs? It’s nice how much you survive but you didnt seem to overly inconvenience either of them either. Call it a wash.
The Ele bailed when she ran out of D Toys, I had started hurting when she split. I Ignored the scaled guy as the 80 was the only threat. Don’t be fooled I down plenty 1v1 and 1v2..
WvW situations tend to favor the Ranger because of the ability to kite. Playing against a couple awful players tends to help as well.
Not being aggressive, but I didn’t kite whatsoever. Was up in there grille the entire time. context?
I like the idea of using distance as much as possible and sheer stubbornness, Its how I envisioned my Ranger when I read up pre release and was determined to find a setup/suit/playstyle that would allow it.
Its always a work in progress but all of it has led me where I am now so I guess it’s working =)

For the 30 WS traits if I run Signet of the Wild I have the 30 Empathic Bond spec’d, If I run Signet of Renewal I run Barkskin.
Raven/Owl Pets.
I’ve also had success with:
2 x PTV Accesories with Ruby Jewels
2 x Ascended P/T/Crit Damage Rings
1 x Ascended Amulet P/T/Crit Damage
1 x Ascended Back with P/T/Crit DamageSpec – 20/20/15/10/5 and REALLY Liking it
Knights Weapons with Sigil of Fire, Master MAintenance Oil and Curry Butternut Squash
3K Attack, 40% Crit rate, 75% Crit Damage, 3K Armor/2K Toughness. Still using 2 bows..

Cempa, Rangers do FINE in all aspects of WvW. If someone tells you otherwise they:
A) Don’t play the class
B) Don’t understand the class
C) Suck on the class
D) All of the above
I only roam on my Ranger, majority of the time solo (~70%/30% small man with guildies) I hold my own in 1v1 vs all types, win a fair amount of 1vX encounters.
That being said I am NOT FoTM Condition/Healing, I run LB/SB Toughness/Healing/BM build and in casual play 3-5 days a week a couple of hours a session have over 2500 badges banked on 8K kills (once again I rarely if ever Zerg Surf as it’s not my preferred play style)
Cempa, don’t let negative feedback discourage you from finding a build you enjoy, refining it and making it work….as the saying goes “There more than one way to skin a Cat” =)

Rangers may not be worthy of an OP tag but are far from from crappy in WvW…I run a kitten spec…LB/SB and win the vast majority of my fights including 1v2s with regularity.
Many of which are vs the very classes claimed to be OP’d in this post. Of the classes I have most trouble with Ele/Mesmer and still win or stalemate many of those fights.
Find an angle that suits your playstyle….build/trait for it and go have fun….todays OP’d classes are tomorrows Nerfs and that cycle will likely continue.
This tag that the Rangers have gotten may play a big role in Dungeons but they are very viable when setup with thought rather than mindless GC setups..
I roam all the time on my 0*0*30*10*30 Ranger…LB/SB kitten spec to boot and enjoy a ton of success. Find an angle that works for you and your preferred play style, refine it and have fun.
Some classes definitely have a bit more to work with but if you have a clue you can make and find an angle for about any class out there.
I chose to continue to play on my Ranger because it was a challenge
