The first thing you should understand is that there is no “Holy Trinity” in GW2. There is no Tank/DPS/Healer trio that is required to make things work. Each and every one of those has an offensive, a defensive, and a support aspect, with a unique playstyle to it.
If you are talking about “spell flavor”, as in “who is the ice-flinging magician” and “who communes with the wild”, “who sneaks”, and so on, here:
Warrior = Warrior
Priest = a Guardian, as much as a Paladin is a Priest
Rogue = Thief
Druid = Ranger specialization
Mage = Elementalist, without access to lightning or earth spells
None of these has equivalent playstyle to those in WoW. Mesmers, Engineers, and Revenants have no flavor equivalent in WoW.
It’s a bit static in WoW. Different classes give different stat buffs and most of the “mechanics” are duplicated. Here, there are unified stat buffs – Might, Fury, Stability – and unified dots – Bleeding, Burning, Vulnerability. The whole idea is different and different professions have wholesomely different playstyles. They rely on different things to survive, as well as a huge level of personal player skill – way more than gear-centric WoW would allow you to express.
My advice? Make a Thief and see how you like the playstyle. It combines many of the aspects of GW2 gameplay and is challenging enough.
If it’s a SP with a consumable item, he should be able to re-obtain it. Is your person sure the item was deleted?
Aye, Bear is spot on.
The fastest and best way to master the game is by learning all the mechanics, the playstyle and psychology of the different professions.
Whatever you pick, you won’t make a mistake, as long as you are personally drawn to the playstyle and you mingle with the profession
The advice some people give as “play this” and “don’t play this” is simply because they take the average player scenario. But if you get into a profession and you enjoy it, then you will by no means be an “average player scenario”. You’ll rock.
So go ahead!
Rock on!
There’s plenty of people asking “Which Server?” questions. Usually the answer is here:
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/introducing-the-megaserver-system/
TL;DR: Unless you’re into WvW, it doesn’t matter which server you are on.
You can find an Aussie guild on the Looking For forum – I’m pretty sure I’ve seen a couple, at least. From then on, it’s luck!
Good luck!
I saw this interesting thread yesterday: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/Xbox-360-controller-and-Guild-Wars-2-merged/page/2#post4853883
I’ve also heard those are easier on your wrists / joints / fingers. If you have a controller kicking about, why not try this?
Well… Here’s the plan:
1. Make a guild.
2. Level up to lvl 35.
3. Do 2 runs of the Ascalonian Catacombs .
=> you have 2g.
Good luck!
Edit: If you’re on EU, I can help you with those runs! give me a poke poke

Well! Read this: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/introducing-the-megaserver-system/
TL;DR: Unless you’re into WvW, it doesn’t matter which server you’re on
Obviously, I should advertize Gunnar’s Hold because that’s where I am!
The shoulders are Human Cultural T2 – heavy: Avenger’s Armor.

I’ve seen the exact same armor combo on several Vigil Warmasters or Tacticians
Ahhh… Delgan, gaming laptops and all are great, but I would avoid them like the plague. All that power and heat in a box is just asking for trouble. My GPU started giving up on the fight half-way through to the end of the warranty, and it went unbearable right after it. That small form factor just… kills it so much faster. That, coupled with the inability to swap out parts reliably, tinker with it, and whatnot, made it a waste for me. The laptop GPU, that is.
If you need it for work, get a laptop without a GPU (i.e. an ultrabook). Nowadays, Intel processors have great graphics, so you will be able to run laggy GW2 on it. For gaming – why not a desktop?
@Alerno What you are saying about Thieves being solely fast DPS, doing worse against many mobs, and Warriors not having reliable escape routes is not correct. Both can do the exact opposite just as well. Poke me online for a demonstration, if you like.
@OP There’s lots of good advice in this thread already. To add a bit to that, don’t shun having multiple characters, even if only one is your main. After you have a set up main, you can only benefit from expanding and growing your “army”. There’s a very short timespan of gear-chasing in GW2; it’s more important to view your skills and abilities in light of what is possible and what everyone else can do.
See, forging things does not unlock them for you. Forging a legendary will put it in your inventory, but it won’t unlock it for you until you decide to. Once you decide to unlock it, it becomes account-bound – you can’t sell it on the TP, send it to your bro, and so on.
So you can’t both unlock it.
As for Eternity, it’s one skin: Eternity itself.
If both of you are on the same account, then yes. You unlock one skin; you unlock the other skin; you unlock the third skin. Your whole account has access.
PS: Unlocking a skin makes an item account-bound, so you can’t unlock it on two accounts with the same item.
You have several phases of the map.
1) First you have the regular Conquest phase. You have to capture and keep the keeps, as you upgrade them. That adds to the progress of the phase. Once it’s done, you proceed on to:
2) Boss Battle phase – every keep has a boss lurking under it; you fight it and you kill it, preferrably. When you’re done or the time is out, you proceed on to:
3) Vinewraith phase. You have a couple of minutes to pick a lane and organize yourselves. Then you fight the Vinewraith, with its own phases. Afterwards, you proceed on to:
4) Labyrinth and waiting – it’s open for adventurers. If you were successful in the second phase, you’ll have a Nightmare key you can use on the chest at the center for 3 rares and more. Meanwhile, the map cooldown timer is ticking.
After the map cooldown is done ticking, the whole map restarts at 1).
In short: if you stick around on a map, eventually you’ll get to the Vinewrath
The only good tip I can give you is to test it out yourself
Everyone’s playing everything. Play until you can say the same
-lift arms-
How can one not help a poor soul, such as this?
Meanwhile, try the Fanged Dread [&AgGZGQAA] on for size!
In my experience, Rangers aren’t as immediately versatile as you describe them. Considering it from the party’s perspective, Rangers do not bring a lot of useful abilities. No AoE stability, no adequate Projectile Handling, no Stealth or Aegis, healing. But don’t let me bash them!
That said, Rangers perform very well in solo scenarios. A ranger can be a good counter against plenty of things, and has some good selfish utilities – infinite block, self-stealth, weapon dodging, and so on. Not to mention that a ranger is one of the few professions that keep being dangerous when downed.
But, to me, all those things need you to play the game a bit more, in order to appreciate them. I would get my hands busy with one after mastering an “easier to apply effectively” profession, like the Guardian, or the Necro.
+ I love my Ranger!
Have fun and good luck!
Heavy armor wearers are in general the worst at long-range options. Keep in mind, there’s no point in having heavy armor if you won’t get in a nice scrap up close and personal.
Guardians in particular have some superb counter-condition, counter-CC, Aegis, Healing, personal damage sustainability, Projectile Handling, and many other goodies. Utility skills are just that – for utility,- and Guardians have lots of that. Neither Ranger nor Necro, for example, have good AoE healing, condition removal, and they have little to none Projectile Handling. The Guardian has multiple options for each of those.
Did I also mention you can move a mind-boggling 1800 range to an enemy, or friend?
1 8 0 0 r a n g e.
And it’s instant.
You can always make it harder for yourself, no matter which profession you are.
You shouldn’t dismiss Thieves as too overpowered. D/P is a very powerful weapon combo, but the others have their uses as well. Running about with D/P will in no way deal the most damage or make your PvE experience the easiest / most useful / fastest. So there’s much to brainstorm here and the benefit is that you can make your own rotations, thanks to Initiative. It’s very flexible and most fun!
Contrary to what you said, Mesmers are still “group-dependent”. Mesmers depend Heavily on their phantasms for damage. In a heavy AoE situation, you are pressed to deal damage effectively. Of course, you can minimize your illusions’ living time by using a shatter build, but that is more PvP-oriented.
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but why don’t you try a Warrior? In my books, Warriors are the most selfish profession of them all. I have also come up with a twist to make it enjoyable for myself, so it’s not too faceroll. Give me a poke, if you want tips
Heya!
In my experience, wireless peripherals are a no-no. Of course, nowadays everyone and their aunt are wireless, but I think it still matters. Going cabled will eliminate any issues you could have with a battery; it also removes the hassle of charging stuff. In my experience, it’s also better latency. Less wireless clutter. So I wouldn’t pick 1).
As for 2) – Razer has good merchandise, but keep in mind it’s branded (not by Kralkatorik, but by Razer). You can probably buy un-branded headphones for 3x less, at the same quality. I’m mentioning this because you didn’t include bling-bling in your list of important things.
My solution is an amazing un-branded headset. The microphone picks up everything from 10 metres away, which could be bad, but is so far awesome. The sound quality is amaze as well. So don’t be shy to try alternative brands! Sometimes it’s better quality and it also helps break up those annoying trends and monopolies!
Good luck!
Remember to advertize your time-zone as well! You don’t want to join a guild that’s 12 hours apart, as good as it may seem.
Hehe
Go for it! Add / remove to the message as you go. Also do consider posting on the Looking For forum; that will help you polish your recruitment strategy.
I don’t normally get involved in such sensitive topics, but I should point out that the most constructive posts in this thread have been by JoshuaRAWR. Red Queen, while you’re right, you aren’t changing society. Let’s face it: it’s not Salvatore’s fault everyone is being a kitten to him / her, so comforting him / her will not fix the problem.
Be practical.
To give you some practical advice as a fellow recruiter, try to lay out all your guild’s selling points. While some of your members will be looking for a community such as yours, I bet that’s not your only selling point. I don’t know what it is you guys exactly do, but here’s a decent recruitment message, from my experience:
Rainbow Pride [GAaY] is a LGBT (and straight) community recruiting good players. We’re strong in PvP/PvE/WvW; weekly guild missions; awesome events! /w me for more info.
Have fun!
Ah, if it’s only information, you shouldn’t have trouble whispering anyone, on any server, even EU.
I’m both on a different server and on EU :P
Hit me up if you have any questions I can answer!
I believe dead players count towards the scaling as well. If they didn’t, then having 15 people dead out of 20 fighting a boss would still make it a doable fight. Which it doesn’t.
Hello!
I agree with what you say about the Living World. Back in the Tower of Nightmares, it was easy for me to keep up with all the “requirements”, but later on, it became increasingly difficult – not skill-wise, but because I was getting bored of the treadmill.
I’m sure you’re keeping track of the “recent” changes, but let me tell you – they have made changes to the way the Living World works. It is no longer comprised of one-off events, like it was back in Season 1. Season 2 has its Stories organized like the Personal Story chapters. Needless to say, the quality is astronomical, compared to the PS. You have the opportunity to unlock each chapter as it is released (by playing it). If you’re late, you can unlock each for ~200 gems, I may be wrong.
All of the LW achievements unlock upon playthrough and they tie in nicely in the greater scheme of things, which is why I have been saving them for now. There’s value in replay.
To answer your question, it is worth coming back to Guild Wars 2. Here’s why.
- The LW is much more relaxed now, compared to Season 1.
- You will experience no “old content player withdrawal”; i.e. maps and events will always be populated, due to the Megaserver system.
- PvE, WvW, and PvP have only been getting better since you left.
It’s allowed to slack
Also depends on the people you surround yourself with. Give me a poke in-game if you want to hang out!
If you are mixing in PVT for survivability, then it’s no longer “optimal”. Ferocity is a stat, so just as any, there’s most of it on chestpieces / leggings.
With Ascended armor, Zerker is okay, but I would go with Celestial simply because ascended armor is account-bound. You can swap it around on toons. Also, it should do an okay-ish job for all builds.
Since it’s PvE in WvW, you are asking basically: Who is best at killing PvE monsters?
Everyone’s good at that; otherwise they would find it hard to level in PvE.
What you want is someone who has a few tricks up his sleeve, can escape sudden zergs, and can take on a solo roamer. That’s a Thief. Enjoy!
I wager you want something fun to do. Why don’t you try a Thief? It may make you sweat a little, at first, but it will show you the gameplay very well. That’s one huge reason – among many other huge reasons – for me to play GW2. Let’s not forget that Thieves are also a cube of fun!
Actually, we have a whole guild running around that idea. Running dungeons as special games? I haven’t done a “regular” dungeon in a year or so x)
Not everyone likes what I do in my dungeons, but you seem like you’d love it.
It’s not just dungeons either. While my area of expertise is there, we have expanded the whole idea to all areas of the game. We like taking this “DIY fun” and applying it to the Guild Progression. So if you’re into it, you’ll find yourself hunting for “Sitting Spots” over Tyria, honing your hard twitch skills (for one of the progress tracks), focusing on leadership, tinkering with events, helping us test and prototype exciting dungeon games (or “twists”, if you’re the kind of person who likes to have a super hard dungeon with 3 twists simultaneously)…
Right now we have a sack of fun you haven’t thought of, judging by your post!
Really, I can’t say how much I’d love to play with you, but this may seem like a blatant guild recruitment, so I won’t post any links here
This is a hard question. The devs are constantly trying to balance out things both inside each profession and between professions. There’s (or will be) a place for everyone, everywhere!
I’m guessing your “real” main was a Mesmer, and your “zerk grinding” main was a Warrior… Maybe I’m wrong!
To answer your question, I would go with one of two choices:
Either a Thief, or a Guardian. Both fun. Both balanced. Both you can skill up, if you find them exceptionally fun. Since you don’t have a Guardian, you can go through the NPE with that, too.
I have varied experience in both. If you need tips, give me a poke
Heya!
Welcome back to GW!
If you are looking for a small-medium growing guild, have a look here:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/community/lookingfor/EU-Thornwolves-BiTE-Recruiting-Thornpups/first#post4763364
We have a website, use Raidcall, and an interesting progression system within the guild!
I can tell you more if you poke me in-game or here.
Good luck!
Greetings!
Thornwolves <BiTE> was founded barely two days before HoT was announced – and we’re doing amaze!
Currently at 75 active members.
Our Aim:
To build a solid core, continue gathering new and veteran players, and create a very enjoyable environment to play and progress in.
Our Interests:
PvE, PvP, but no widespread WvW, to allow for inter-server.
“Good old vanilla” gaming.
Funky homebrew events. (lots of them)
Mission
Our mission is to build a community of like-minded players, both new and old. We want to share fun and challenging experiences together, growing as gamers and personalities. Hand in hand improve our skill, knit closer as people and a guild. Foster an appreciation for the hard and rewarding way of doing things.
The Thornwolf Way:
We are building this guild to revolve around your fun and your personal progression in it. As MMO gamers, we’ve been in a plethora of guilds and it has always been the case that in-guild progression felt stale, boring, and the same. This is why we are making a rich rank progression in our guild which is meaningful and challenging.
Having a higher rank in the Thornwolves means that you are both a regular -and- a skilled player.
What does this mean?
It means that you pass trials to rank up. The progression is gradual. Each rank brings you perks and tries you, so you are more skilled, more in tune with the guild, and ready and willing to take on the new rank and its responsibilities.
The first inside rank in the guild also has the easiest trial – exploring our Home Base and getting familiar with Raidcall, which we require for listening, at the very least.
But later on, the Trials will be deadly. The Trials will make you sweat. The Trials will really test you. After all, you yourself decide when you are ready and when you would like to rank up. Hold your horses, though! You can only pass 1-2 trials per month, so we honor our long-time regulars.
You Decide – You Win
Rank up twice and you will have to make a choice – who will you be in the guild? Will you be a deadly Shockwolf, or an experienced Spiritwolf? Or a charismatic Goldwolf? You can only pick one. Each means a different thing, and each can do different things. Your choices shape who you are in the guild and what the guild is for you. The trials will tell if you are suited toward each.
For all this and more information, pm me here or in-game, or have a look at our website: https://thornwolves.wordpress.com/
Or… if you are ready to be a Thornpup
For me, Mesmers are much more enjoyable to play than before. I even deleted my lvl 80 Mesmer a long while ago and now it’s actually fun! Scepters are viable, Torches are ultra fun; as Barna said, Confusion hits PvE for +33% damage. Mantras are all AoE and the Mantra of Concentration gives AoE stability. All in all, it’s very nice!
Keep in mind precursors are meant to be hard to obtain. Getting 600-1200 gold is hard, but worthwhile, even if you disdain farming. You are getting a “legendary” for a reason!
Maybe what’s chasing you off the game is a bit of the old-school farming mentality? I always thought that the devs (and creators) of GW2 encouraged a natural approach to the game. You are by no means obliged to “farm” things and if you really need a skin, you can either burn yourself out and RNG/farm it (like you did), or you can go the long, pleasant and rewarding way about obtaining what you need! So I’d say in the end that your views are “personal” not simply because they are your own, but because they are also based on your approach. I personally view it all very positively
I go about doing things the pleasant way.
If you think so too, give me a poke in here
We have a guild going on, for new players and for veterans!
I think you’d like it!
Give me a poke in-game, if you’re up.
Zerk means Zerker, from Berserker, the equipment stat combination. Having zerk gear has nothing to do with your experience. When people enter LFG looking for zerkers, they are generally looking for an easy, fast run – people are expected to have Zerker gear – and use “cheese” tactics, as “Zerk” is only a gear prerequisite – not skill or knowledge.
I usually do dungeons in a Guild setting. I really dislike cheesing things, so I always advertise “lowbie run” on LFG, so I get fewer zerkers.
The way I structure my advertisements like this, for example:
LFM P2! Lowbie run! Everyone is welcome
Keep in mind, I oftentimes bring my 80 and still call for a lowbie run, it’s very important to say your anti-elitist spells.
If you want to just have fun, give me a shout in-game. I’ll show you a few places
PS: It’s always better to post on the Player Help forum when you are looking for help. The crowd there is geared towards explanations
I would advise you to do the exact opposite. If you only have a lvl 40+ thief, after which you quit, you may enjoy the New Player Experience to its fullest. Make a brand new one and enjoy the game as it is! You’ll get your levelling rewards just the same, but you will also have access to the NPE trait system.
Armorsmithing and Jewelcrafting is a good choice. One will give you armor, the other – trinkets. Jewelcrafting uses different metals than Armorsmithing, for part of it, and it uses different rare materials.
I think it’s a good idea to keep Armorsmithing and JC!
Keep in mind that every profession nets you 10 levels total. Armorsmithing is capped at 500, which means 1 level per 50 skill, while JC and Cooking are at 400, which means 1 level per 40 skill.
WickedRequiem, something which may help you position yourself easier is the Melee Attack Assist option (or whatsitcalled). It stops your character in melee range, when you try to rush through an enemy.
Keep in mind, people and monsters in this game are not solid, so you are perfectly allowed to run through them.
Sitting still is not encouraged in this game – there is only one trait which encourages it and in every other place and time, I would consider it to be a penalty (to your tactical advantage). Of course, sitting still can be applied with reverse psychology in mind, but only in very specific cases.
Noah, if you are looking for a few neat ones to start with, here’s my favorites. They are also good to learn the game mechanics – and how to beat some special foes.
1. Ketsurak (wiki him) can be soloed trivially – but if approached inappropriately, he can wipe teams very easily.
2. Toxic Spider Queen – she has an interesting mechanic and a good dancefloor around her. Definitely worth trying to 2-man. Can be soloed as well, if you follow a few simple rules.
3. Fluffy – he isn’t really fluffy, but he’s giant and underwater. Will let you get used to your underwater skills and survival.
4. Lieutenant Kholer and the Spider Queen – Kholer has a time-proven effective method to kill inattentive players. The Spider Queen teaches you sometimes positioning beats sheer dodging reflex. And it teaches you that cleansing trumps reflection sometimes.
All in all, there are plenty of rewarding experiences in-game. If you have a question about how to beat my own favorites, give me a poke
The way I do it is, I use redundant keybindings extensively. Sometimes I let my SO play on my account and she isn’t used to my keybindings, so I always keep the default ones as option 2, whenever it’s possible. I had a long period of playing the game on a touchpad (sometimes while drinking hot beverages in one hand), so I had to learn to multi-task and incorporate key redundancies.
First of all, I’m right-handed, so I use my right hand to steer the camera.
My left hand stays on WASD, which I keep for what they do best – move about.
I find Backpedaling to be useful, as it is good for avoiding and misguiding enemy shots.
But really, it’s very simple:
Pinkie – Shift; Ring finger – A; Middle – W; Index – D; Thumb – Space.
Putting your hand like so (and assuming you have a QWERTY keyboard and your dodge is keybound to V – this is important later on) will allow you to very easily do the mystery of jump-dodging, which has its great uses, some of which are: jumping over large gaps while in combat, proofing a jump against hits, and being awesome in general.
I have good mouse skills, so I can use them to their best. Therefore, I do not use specialized strafe keys – I use RMB + A/D to strafe instead. Combined with what Danikat added about moving forward with RMB+LMB, you have good mobility if you are eating cheesecake and if you have only a finger and a hand at your disposal.
Skills 1-5 are left as they are.
Skills 6-ELITE are switched about.
6/Heal – Q
7/Util – E
8/Util – X
9/Util – C
ELITE – Shift+V
The sense behind the Elite being Shift+V is that you will never dodge while casting an elite. Furthermore, if you cast your elite by accident, the dodge is right there, so you can cancel it.
All those keys still allow you to use 6-0 by default.
This also allows you to keep Z for sheathing weapons.
F1-F4 skills I keybind redundantly. F1-F4 work as they are, or they can be cast as Shift+1, Shift+2, … Shift+4.
And finally, a huge quality of life improvement for me is that all my interface functions (hero tab, guild panel, WvW, and TP, but not inventory) are exclusively keybound to Shift + their usual key. This is so I do not open stuff mid-combat, which happens often if I forget to hit Enter while replying.
That’s that! It has never failed me
Enjoy button mashing!
(edited by Seal.5964)
There’s buttons at the top center of your screen, you change your PvP build there and your gear / sigils. Weapons you equip from your inventory, and you can assign PvP sigils right there. There is no “armor”, per se, only an amulet with all the stats you pick.
Zadie, I would warmly recommend making a brand new character. It will get you familiar with the game once more and you will be able to experience the New Player Experience, along with the influx of players.
As for your Necro, I would never refuse to take you in one of my dungeon runs. There are many people with my mindset, you see. But as it happens, most of them quickly get gobbled up by a guild, so their efforts end up in the guild. In my case, I’m leading one. Maybe that’s what you’re missing? A good guild?
From what I see, it’s a problem: http://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/138531/how-to-move-a-fullscreen-game-to-the-second-monitor
Maybe ANet came up with a solution somewhere in the command line parameters for running the game, but I doubt it… Your best solution ought to be drag and fullscreen- although you can try the one in the link as well!
Have fun!
You should have a look at the Megaserver System https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/introducing-the-megaserver-system/
If you plan to play WvW, it’s a good idea to be on the same server as them. Otherwise, any is good!
I haven’t had any problems with full servers, in all honesty… Likely yours is because there’s too many people online! And if that will be your home server and you’ll need to queue from now on… I don’t know if it’s worth it! You should be able to log on in off-peak hours (unless this is some kind of bug). I recommend getting a low-population server, so you can play whenever you want
It affects your ability to play with your friends insofar as WvW is concerned – you can only play WvW with your server (against others); the Megaserver allows you to PvE with anyone you like!
Join our guild, join our guild!
Bump for the new players!
I’ve been having weird login server disconnects and it always seems to be server-side. Only waiting fixes it for me, for now!
Greetings!
