Fun fact: they refuse to remake Cantha and Elona because poor Asians and Africans might feel offended. I’m not making this up.

Source?

It was on the forums a year or so, and I’m certain they only mentioned Cantha. Something about the way that Cantha smushed different Asian cultures/names together didn’t sit well with their Asian audience. It may not seem reasonable, but as an example, many of my Korean friends are pretty racist towards anyone of Japanese descent for historical reasons…

Found the thread (or part of it): https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Merged-The-Cantha-Thread/page/3#post1394252

If that is Rytlock in the picture (he looks a bit slim to be him to my eyes), he seems to have changed his shoulder armor and is now carrying a two handed weapon on his back. Or maybe he just has a very large left pauldron and bare right shoulder. Either way, his gear doesn’t seem to match what we’ve seen on Rytlock.

What about the teaser image of Rytlock wearing a blindfold? Obviously it doesn’t show that much, but it’s not a far jump to say that he’s changed during his time in the Mists. Also the proportions are similar.

I think mounts are completely useless in a game where you can fast travel close to anywhere at any given time, but if I could ride a dolyak, I’d be happy.

If mounts gave a permanent out-of-combat 25% speed boost (like some signets do) and are otherwise cosmetic then I’d perfectly fine with them.

Oh, and one should automatically dismount when talking to a npc or interacting with (some) objects, to avoid screen clutter around merchants and crafting stations.

Everyone gets an out of combat speed boost, that’s why you walk so much slower while in combat :P

As for mounts, go ahead. There’s already the broom and magic carpet. As long as they don’t give a speed boost I’m fine with it.

So, buy 18 pieces of Sylvari cultural armor, get a sylvari themed outfit, etc.

Nah, I think that purplish haze is just the ambient purple lighting in the Labyrinth itself (especially noticeable once you rescue Kasmeer and she creates her light glow).

I second this. I have the light of Dwayna backpiece and the glow was purple/magenta instead of the usual off-white while in the Labyrinth.

Something that i see a lot of people haven’t noticed since the last LS.
Caithe’s Blossom (the ascended accessory u get from the previous LS) has this quote under it: “I’m done with your games, and I’m finished with you. I am not your dearheart.”

I don’t think it’s related to Faolin. I think it’s related to the Pale Tree. This is what made me expect something bad from her ever since the last LS..but i wasn’t expecting it this fast.

Anyway….kids…what did we learn from GW2 today? Preemptive deforestation is a good thing! <and the kids go yaaaaay>

Um… the flavour text on that ring is taken from TA story… Word for word…

After defeating Faolain:

Caithe: End this charade now, Faolain.
Faolain: But dearheart, you used to enjoy our little games of make-believe.
Caithe: I’m done with your games, and I’m finished with you. I am not your dearheart.
Faolain: We shall see, dearheart. We shall see. (laughs)

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Twilight_Arbor_%28story%29#Dialogue

Edit: After seeing the PoI image, maybe it’s hinting to look at the dialogue in TA? More backstory for Caithe/Faolain when we go to talk to the pale tree?
“Caithe: “When our race was new, we travelled together, her and I. We became close.
Caithe: We found a great darkness. I pulled back from it. Faolain embraced it.”

Also, I’m not really an expert on Asura models, but doesn’t the asura in the PoI preview look like Emissary Vorpp? I’m really not sure if that model is shared though….

I honestly believe that they are read often and things are discussed internally but that’s where the issue lies, no final information is ever given to the players. I don’t blame anyone specifically just the policy of not trusting us with any real information about the future of the game. It’s getting very old for a lot of people and it’s disturbing to a lot of your player base so frankly and please don’t take it as an attack on you, all the pep talks given won’t really help until real information is shared, at least for me and everyone else who’s asked for the same openness.

PS. welcome back into the lion’s den….where’s the froggy?

I think people are forgetting the pitchfork wars that happened when they did tell us about what they were planning for the game. People automatically take a “we want to do this” as a “this is coming in the near future! Everyone get on the hype train!” Even if they don’t make promises, people will take it as a promise, which is why I can’t begrudge them of their “Don’t talk during development” policy.

That said, they probably shouldn’t leave full reveals to streamers or youtubers (like they did for september feature pack). The patch notes, which the streamers use for those videos, aren’t incredibly detailed and they miss a lot, which leads to situations like what happened earlier this month; where everyone thinks the NPE is working exactly as intended when it really isn’t.

tl;dr: I don’t begrudge them their information during development policy, but there really are places where they should be more open, ie. release notes.

After a few more weeks, I reflected on WoW 2004 to 2006. I remember I had options… I remember my first epic mount was 900 gold back in 2004. That was equivalent to this. Endless hours of farming.
The difference was the aesthetic. In WoW I could go out and pick grass, flowers, or farm silk which ACTUALLY DROPPED from CREATURES! What amazing idea!

You have options. Go do dungeons, or fractals, EotM or the world boss train. All of those have the ability to drop T6 mats, whether from mobs or champ boxes. Use the bonus money you earn from that to buy more t6 mats.

I’m not 100% sure if DR has changed any, but traditional farming (like in WoW) just isn’t that effective in GW2.

If they are not aware of the normal bank location or even its existence, the impression that would leave is: “Want to enter the bank? Pay us!”. Wouldn’t that be the case on many players?

Maybe a dialog such as: “this is a special place which offers all kinds of services confined in one small place for conveniece, if you want access go to: [link to gem store]; otherwise, if you are looking for a bank you can find it here: [link to bank wp], you can find other services such as crafting stations and other merchants around the city.”

When I had a bunch of royal passes there was at least one or two people a day who would be outside complaining about having to pay to use the bank.

I’d always link them to the proper waypoint, but part of me wondered how they missed the normal bank/tp :x

LotRO had nice approach to cooking and farming. You could farm in special fields just about all the ingredients needed for cooking. I know cooking is cheap and such, but the prices of some finished products are really insane, considering it’s a short time buff only.

Too bad the only non combat thing to do is jumping puzzles and crafting (but you need to fight to get materials to that).

Yes I liked LOTRO’s housing and farming. I loved fishing in WoW. If they combined those three into this game somehow it would be paradise.

If they could also throw in something similar to WoW’s archaeology system…. /drool

Why not a heavy armor wearing mage (primarily melee-mid range) that is offensively focused, thematically (compared to guardians which are defense/support focused)?

Spellsword(?)
Heavy Armor (would fill in the medium base health that is missing for a heavy class)
Weapons: Axe(main/off), Sword (main/off), Greatsword, Hammer/Mace, Focus/Warhorn, Torch, and a Shortbow or longbow for range. I’d say staff too, as long as it’s utilized as a melee-mid ranged weapon (like a bo staff).
Magic: Focusing on arcana or a creative mix of the different schools of magic. According to ( http://esprits-dorr.fr/node/261 ), mixing is/could be possible.

As for skill theme, I think it would focus more on imbuing weapon attacks with magic or weapon attacks with a secondary magic affect (terrible example, but third swing of hammer could hit the ground, resulting in a magic damage aoe).

I kinda sorta thought the same thing, but IMO, Mesmer is a ‘spellsword’, i.e. a magic duelist who uses a sword.

Sort of why I thought, take the other path in the fork and make a ‘spellarmor’ or some such.

To me a spellsword is a warrior that uses magic, not exactly a duelist type. Mesmer seems like more of a nightblade to me (if you’re familiar with TES classes). Spellsword = Warrior that isn’t afraid to get into the fray, similar to a guardian but their abilities are more selfish as they’re focused on the offensive as opposed to party leadership/defense/support.

They could also go with a “Dragon Knight”. Might be interesting, and could tie in with the Inquest lore :o

I’m hoping that they won’t make another heavy class.

Mainly because I think that “Warrior” already covers everything and the guardian was already a stretch. IMO, guardians should have been a healing/protection based light armored class.

Now lets look at Warriors.
Armored guy with Mace —-> Warrior,
Armored Guy with Great Axe —-> Warrior,
Armored Guy with dual pistols —--> wussy Warrior but still one
Light-armored guy with Katana? —-> Ninja but that’s not a heavy class anymore by definition.

Magic-users, on the other hand has far less limitations. For example
Time magic —-> Chronomancer (been suggested here on these forums),
Plant magic —-> Chloromancer (like from Rift),
Communer with Spirits —-> The Ritualist (from GW1)
and the list goes on limited only by imagination. These, like the Guardian, should all be light armored classes and only by some ridiculous determination not to make a monk did we get the Guardian.

Anyway, its my hope that Anet stops coming out with any more Heavy armored classes and just give us more Light armored ones. For the Warriors, just give them more weapon types to cater to more play styles.

There is your problem, you limit yourself to PvE and missed quite a bit of living story.

So it’s just a giant screw you to anyone that doesn’t like a certain game mode, even though PvE players are one of Anet’s biggest crowds? Hardly seems logical.

Edit: To get back to the topic, I could be the most dedicated PvE player, and it would still take me multiple years to even get close to getting the boots of radiant/hellfire set (as the system is now), nevermind the chest/legs. I don’t see how changing the requirements would lower the prestige any. If you’re dedicated to one game mode because you don’t like the others, or just don’t have time for the others, it would still take a very long time to get only one set, while the hardcore achievement hunters would easily have two in what, half the time (as well as the pinnacle weapons)?

I really feel like the people saying no to this are not getting the fact that with the OP’s proposed changes, it will still take just as long to get both full sets… it just puts the focus on getting one set complete and then working on the 2nd set, instead of getting incomplete pieces from both sets before you can get a single set complete.

but that would significantly reduce the prestige of having a complete set. It gets harder and harder to raise AP the more easy achievements you completed. So 33k/36k AP show a lot more dedication that easy as hell 18k. You dont have to do any of the more demanding achievements to reach 18k if you started playing regulary at release.

The game will last many years, Anet added an achievement for having a 10 year old character.

18k is easy? I’ve played 2410hours since launch and am still only at 8.7k achievement points. I’ve maxed at hobby dungeon and agent of entropy, I’ve gotten 99% of all jumping puzzles, I have 4/8 crafting professions maxed (2 to 500), 400 points from HoM and the achievements that I haven’t done in PvE give me a measly amount of points (maybe another 400-500 in total). Unless I want to start playing PvP or WvW (hint: I don’t) for hours every day, the radiant/hellfire chest/legs would take me years to reach, even if I do all of the LS achievements.

And the game will last for 10 years? Sure, Anet planned ahead for that many birthdays, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it will last for 10 years (even though I hope it does).

?? I’ve been playing since early release and have ~1400hrs logged (I’m fairly casual) and I’m at 14k AP. How the heck are you only at 8.7k with almost twice the hours played?? There are tons of achievements to get if you actually focus on getting achievements.

If you aren’t focused on getting achievements/AP then can you really complain that the armor obtained exclusively from achievments/AP is too difficult to obtain?

That’s like running a CoF p1 once a week and then complaining that it takes too long to get the armor. If you concentrated your focus on CoF, all 3 paths every day, you would get marks like crazy.

I’m not saying the AP requirements for the armor are reasonable, because they are certainly high, but at 2400hrs play time and you are actively trying to get AP, you should be at 18k+ by now easily.

I don’t play PvP or WvW at all. I’ve completed world boss achievements, dungeon achievements, only have 2 more jumping puzzle achievements, completed most of explorer achievements, halfway done fractal achs and halfway through slayer. I’ve done pretty much all the living story achievements except the last quarter(?) of season 1 (too busy to play). Pretty much the only PvE achievements that I haven’t fully (or almost fully) maxed out are ones that require a lot of money (like the legendary/cultural armor/mini achs) or weapon master. If I do all of the PvE achievements that I have missed (that are still in the game) it would only give me 828. That’s including the legendary achievements, of which I am still working on my first one.

Funny enough, I’m the person in my guild that tries to actively look for achievements (like with jumping puzzles). There are people who have played nearly twice as much as me and still have half of my achievement points. Alternatively, I know people who play twice, if not three times, as much as I do and have over 20k by now. The difference? That person plays both PvP and PvE.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I also have the EotM achievements that don’t require a huge amount of numbers (totaling 56 AP), and also to mention again that I have maxed out hobby dungeon explorer and agent of entropy.

Edit 2: Forgot to add in collections, but even with the redonkulous $$ required, it would still only turn the 828 = 1149, and that’s including all of the BL skin collections.

A quote from the Forbes website on customer retention:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/alexlawrence/2012/11/01/five-customer-retention-tips-for-entrepreneurs/

“Never Underestimate the Value of Retention

For those who feel that customer retention plays a relatively minor role in helping a company grow a healthy bottom line, here are a few statistics you might be interested in. According to Bain and Co., a 5% increase in customer retention can increase a company’s profitability by 75%. And if those numbers don’t impress you, Gartner Group statistics tell us that 80% of your company’s future revenue will come from just 20% of your existing customers. Still not sold on customer retention? One final statistic provided by Lee Resource Inc. should give you plenty to think about: Attracting new customers will cost your company 5 times more than keeping an existing customer."

Just sayin’

no one is arguing that ANet should not retain customers, what people such as myself are saying is that ANet are going after the WRONG people to retain first (non-existent/brand new players) and not their current customers.

This is probably not something you want to hear but from a business point of view ArenaNet is probably going for the correct group of people. I don’t know how your situation is but I spend much more on gems in my first year than I did in the second year. And the same goes for a lot of my friends. So making sure new players stay in the game long enough that they start buying gems makes more sense business wise than entertaining the veterans who don’t buy gems any more.

The problem with veterans not buying gems is something ArenaNet should address in a different way. But you are probably aware that ArenaNet does not want to do that. And they probably have the numbers to back that up. I guess the current pricing is more profitable. I don’t like it (the gem situation and the focus on new players), but that is what it is.

I just started playing 4 months ago. After my first month, I spent around $100 on gems. I was planning to spend another $150 on gems this week, but after the levelling changes I quit playing altogether. They are doing the opposite of what they thought they were doing.

You started playing 4 months ago, before this change, so I don’t think you classify as a new player.

- There are some things happening at the wrong levels. Things like utility skills and elites are intended to come at approx. the same time they used to in actual game time, we sped up leveling for levels 1-15 and had them slide back in levels a bit to offset that pacing, they are not currently where we want them to be in the level up system. This was an oversight, and will absolutely be fixed.

Does this also include the profession f1-4 skills?

That’s great and all, but as a bell user that likes to play actual music (instead of spamming (8) repeatedly), if there are any players actually playing music, they will stand beside them to drown them out.

It’s happened to me on multiple occasions and I’ve actually seen an amazing harp player in Divinity’s Reach be forced to stop because of it as well.

I enjoy making alts. I enjoyed the old system of leveling progression. What I don’t like is being locked out of my full character until 40 (halfway through leveling!). That said, I do like the new leveling rewards (if they’d fix the down leveling issue with stats, maybe by giving stats for every level again). That is what makes me dislike this change.

On the less frustrating part of the spectrum, I am worried about them catering to players that don’t make investments in learning a game. From my experience, those players tend not to stick around long (or provide monetary investments) anyway.

I, and others, have said it multiple times. If they make the “tutorial” optional (including getting your elite at level 40), I would be content.

1. They tested it in China. Works great for them.
2. Do NOT place your knowledge base/experience on others in shoddy “Everyone Knows” science.
3. ANet has more metrics and more information than you ever will about the over-all feeling of the start of the early game.
4. I am sorry you don’t like this change/idea but its already coming, adapt or move on is all I can tell ya.

This ^ specifically number 2.

Apparently people are dumb, like it or not.

Not to long ago I remember we were complaining that we were getting Level 80s that don’t know how to dodge roll. Guessing those debates sunk in.

Imo, the dodge “game” is great. Skill unlocks? Not so much. Easy way to fix this for the vets is to just make it optional. Traits are bad enough as is, but give our alts their skills.

If this change really helps new players, then they’ll see the effects in time. Just don’t make it mandatory.

I have 8 level 80 chars, I have been playing since pre-release.

Since the feature update I have been thinking of buying me another character slot becouse it looks fun and exiting to level up now as I look when my girlfriend levels one of her alts. And honestly I am going to buy myself a new char spot today, so I guess I am not a Veteran since all veterans are upset with this update.

It’s worth it. I’m having a blast leveling now. The amount of unlocks and just seeing what they did with the system is great.

I’m curious, do you think you’ll still be having fun doing it your second or third time around, when you know what to expect?

Sure because I spent an hour or two at low levels, but I just leveled to 55 and got a nice rare piece that I didn’t have.

Most of these complaints seem to be about the skill unlocks which are done fairly early. The entire leveling experience has been redone.

I prefer the stories this way, since I can do them in blocks with no leveling interruptions.

Really? Because I only feel restricted. Sure, playing through it to see how the rewards and story have changed is exciting, but I find it incredibly annoying not having access to the previous skills and weapons as soon as I start. Maybe that’s because I’m already on my 2nd char for each profession. I really can’t see myself doing another one though. I’ll probably just wait another year for a birthday scroll/make myself pvp to get tomes of knowledge.

Also, doing Wurm or SB and seeing that big flashing arrow over my heal skill on my level 80 (when my heal is on cd) is impeccably annoying.

Edit: Disclaimer: I’m okay with them keeping the system for new players (even though I think a tutorial would be better), but it really needs to be optional for those that don’t need it. I don’t have enough b-day presents for all of my alts and I can’t stand sPvP, so what other options are there?

Since the feature update I have been thinking of buying me another character slot becouse it looks fun and exiting to level up now as I look when my girlfriend levels one of her alts. And honestly I am going to buy myself a new char spot today, so I guess I am not a Veteran since all veterans are upset with this update.

It’s worth it. I’m having a blast leveling now. The amount of unlocks and just seeing what they did with the system is great.

I’m curious, do you think you’ll still be having fun doing it your second or third time around, when you know what to expect?

To the veteran players..

I would, but my 14 characters and 6 instant 20 scrolls aren’t enough for all of my alts Also I dislike sPvP. But what a great way to leave out PvE players (the ones who actually care about making alts)!

I believe on of the devs said that the “tens of thousands of testers” was a mixture of people from China, NA and EU.

Skill Gates for new players...why?

At a guess I’d say that beta weekend retention was bad, and they did research on why. The research led to the conclusion that in a weekend, people didn’t have time to learn the system to appreciate the game. Anet wants more retention for people who start, particularly during free weekends.

Now they have that, they can run a free weekend or even a free trial.

Fine with me, as long as they give veterans the option to opt out of skill lock. At the moment I have no desire to level my alts until I have more birthday scrolls.

At the moment, I don’t feel like playing at all. Do you realize that it’s now impossible to do a daily (complete, that is), on a low level character? No conditions, no dodging, no doing condition damage, no underwater combat, no skill point…
The only ones you can do is salvaging and kills.

I do realize. I also realize I don’t have the data they do so I can’t really say anything as to what’s a better way for them to keep new players around. That said, I dislike how this affects experienced players. Obviously just raging “OMG this sucks!” doesn’t get very far so I might as well try to think of a halfway mark where both sides can get they want/need. If an instant 40 scroll was available for gold I would buy it for my alts. I would still be able to enjoy the lower leveled zones at my leisure without the pop ups and limitations that lower level players would have.

I feel like adding a vendor with instant level 40 scrolls would be an okay way. Have them sell for 5-15g (an amount that new players will not have before level 40, but isn’t more expensive than crafting for experienced players). They won’t have to add too much work into changing the program or w/e and older players can skip the hand holding.

Veteran players seem the most upset by this which i dont get. I started since release and its not like i dont hav 8 experience scrolls and 80+tomes of knowledge sitting in the bank. If your a veteran how do you not have any?

Not everyone enjoys pvp… And this largely affects the PvE players that like to make alts.

Of course the changes are probably good for new players, but I definitely think the skill locking should be optional at least for players that already have an 80.

This IS insulting.

They should have at least tried a full tutorial (similar to GW Factions/Nightfall) that can be skipped if you’re an experienced player…

I feel like they should have made the tutorials an actual tutorial. Atm it just throws you out there, providing nothing but a small snippet of the story in an instanced gameworld.

Honestly, Anet really hit the nail on the head for tutorials/start game when they made GW:NF. It was interactive, it explained everything and if you really wanted to, you could skip it.

Unless they didn’t include the option for a full tutorial in their testing, I don’t see how someone could value level-gated skills and features as better >_>

There’s another point to be made here, actually.

I wouldn’t even know about the existence of the ascalonian catacombs and other dungeons were it not for my guild talking about them in teamspeak.

Yet again, guidance for us nubs is what is needed, nothing more or less.

But you get mail sent to you when you near or achieve the suggested level?

Apparently the level curve from 1-15 has been lowered, so levels 1-15 will go faster than before).

Guys, at a preview Video from a German Website they said yesterday it will be lvl 20 personal story For BL Key

And today we had two previewers, that I know of, that have said it’s from the level 10 personal story (also that you unlock 3-10 at level 10).

But you don’t need to be level 20? I’ll use the human commoner line as an example.

You play until you are level 10. This unlocks the personal story steps from On the Mend (3) to Commander (10). Once you finish Commander and have the key, nothing else is necessary.

Unless you’re saying that you somehow think you’ll need to be level 15+ to handle the level 10 personal story?

From what I understood from what the previewers said, the level 10 personal story still gives a key, but you only unlock the personal story at level 10. So you’d have to level to 10 and then start doing the 3-10 personal story to get the key :x

That was my impression too, which is why I was suggesting ways to quickly level to 10

Er, why do you say level 20 for the Chinese release, as well as suggest buying level 15+20 gear >_> + 15 level up tomes :x

That’s the information I’ve read is why. Could be wrong, haven’t played on the chinese servers.

You really didn’t read what I had said, did you…
