The White Mantle Return: A THEORY *SPOILERS*

in Lore

Posted by: Sera.6539

Sera.6539

The original Guild Wars elements hasn’t been completely abandoned, so it’s not extremely super far fetched. Like others have said, there are minor ties to some lore from the original game. The question is whether or not ANet will expand on those tiny references to something more main focused. The issue of the White Mantle is that it’s a bit more human centered. With the living story, we’ve covered grounds for almost every major race in Tyria.

Though don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see it explored regardless of that fact. As a person who didn’t play much of the original, they’re largely mysterious to me. And I’d still love to kick Caudecus (cause we know he’s definitely up to no good) from his high horse.

This post just made me think about how there are so many loose ends in the (personal (dungeons included) and living) story that I’d love to see explored more. ANet has so much they can pursue story wise, but whether or not we’ll get to see all of it remains unanswered.

The White Mantle Return: A Link to Lore

in Living World

Sera.6539

I apologize for not reading through the entire thing… but I am curious, is there any direct or indirect reference to the White Mantle other than “they’ve been in the jungle” and the fact that we are getting a jungle Elder Dragon?

No direct references. Pure speculation really.

But as for indirect references, you have the title of this patch: “The Battle for Lion’s Arch” which is a call back to an old mission from GW1 with the same name where you fend off waves of White Mantle and Mursaat to restore the monarchy to Kryta.

Season 1 | Lack of Major Male Characters!

in Living World

Sera.6539

We also have E, who is still a “mystery” in terms of 100% confirmation. Sure Logan doesn’t make the best choices at times (which the whole Glint thing was more Jennah’s fault and the link they have), but he does his duty like a boss. Braham’s issues with Eir don’t really get brought up at every turn. Lord Faren is really just a fool (or is he…) There’s also the best character so far. Job-o-Tron/Hobo-Tron/Ho-Ho-Tron/Heal-o-Tron. Even though it’s a golem, pretty sure he’s kinda a male golem.

There’s a good chance there will be more focus on other characters (and maybe more males) in the second arc. But the truth is, the world of games is still in need of “strong” female characters. Although there weren’t many “strong” males in this arc, as a broad whole, females are trailing behind.

Subject Alpha, it’s strange;
you’ll be down on the ground
if you fight it at range.

I know you were just trying to rhyme, but before stacking became the popular thing to do, Alpha was fought at melee and range quite equally. It’s just that most people don’t know how to fight it now if Alpha walks astray from stacking point.

I pretty much have to agree with most others here, although I think there are only 2 questions I have.

1.I really want to know if Scarlet was trying to stop the dragon, purposely awaken it, or tricked into thinking she was stopping it but actually awakening it?

2. What exactly does/did scarlet offer the alliances that keeps them from backing out of their deals and fighting to the death for her?

1. It’s possible we’ll find out with the epilogue on the 18th.

2. I don’t remember which group it was, but I remember Scarlet saying something about threatening a group with death if they didn’t comply.

-Flame Legion / Dredge – Forget exactly, but anger against the Charr and Norn could have been it. Also retake some land.
-Aetherblades – Technology (?)
-Krait – Were promised their prophet. They believed http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Champion_Toxic_Hybrid to be the incarnation. They’re also incredibly xenophobic.
-Nightmare Court – Just like being evil I guess.

Really, most were probably operating under the idea of using each other to gain what they wanted, so they worked together. Scarlet essentially got them to work for her by getting them to use each other.

For starters, I’m not sure how many BP players go into the event. I just know that after 4hrs Friday and 1hr Sunday (crossing over into Monday). I’ve yet to see just one of the Knights downed.

And the Knights appear to be nothing more than phallic blocks. So I don’t blame people for not bothering with them.

@kokiman: Checked the daily and monthly tabs I didn’t see anything specific to the Event. Just the usual (ie Skill Interupt; Veteran Slaying, etc).

Now I might forgive this thing if not for the fact that every single Event has been nothing but: Some Fun, Platforming, Phallic Blocks.
…at least with previous events you didn’t need to complete most of the sub-achievements to get the Meta.

Today’s should be to look at any Lion’s Arch vista.

It would be amazing if Lion’s Arch was rebuilt with architecture representing each of the races. The shipwrecks made sense though, due to what happened with the original Lion’s Arch.

Sera.6539

An undead dragon was threatening the world, so a bunch of heroes banded together to defeat it. Two years later (Zhaitan was defeated in 1325 AE, it’s currently 1327 AE in the game), different racial creatures of the world started working together in unlikely alliances to an unknown purpose. These alliances caused destruction and chaos in various parts of the world. It was eventually revealed that the mastermind was a woman named Scarlet. Her true motives were obscured for a long time, it was only known that she had an experience, years ago, that caused her to snap. She was apparently being driven crazy from another dragon, and formed all the alliances and caused chaos in order to awaken it. Now the world faces a new threat.

*Spoiler* Braham vs Marjory

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: Sera.6539

Sera.6539

You wanna talk realistic? My human Thief killed an Elder Dragon, and a walking plant took credit for it. I think my issue holds more of a realism argument. Just saying.

Trahearn never claimed credit for killing the Dragon. He tells he he’s sad that he can’t continue on to help you with the fight and has to stay and work on Orr.

Only Trahearne haters allowed in this thread

And he spoke funny. And he tasted like okra.

Wait… you know how he tastes???

It’s a well known fact that all Sylvari taste of okra. It’s a basic aspect of their anatomy. Just like humans taste like pork.

A little late to the “sylvari taste” discussion
But I think they taste according to their leaf and …bark… colors

My sylvari tastes like potato she looks like a nightshade ( potato) plant cause she’s pink leaved with white bark ( and ironically ..her last name is Nightshade)

Why is that ironic if that’s what she looks like?

In any case, while you may be correct, I think you’ll find it is potato seasoned with okra.

Because I had no idea what a nightshade was when I named her or made her XD
:P Scarlet probably tastes like tomatoes but we’d never know because she’s gone now

I did taste her. And she tasted like moldy slimy okra (speculation, go!)

D: are you one of those vegetarian charrs? They eat my sylvari friends..

…what do you think Braham and Marjory taste like?

Braham tastes like ham probably. And Marjory like strawberries (strawberries came to me for some reason).

Feedback: Living Story

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: Sera.6539

Sera.6539

Because this is a feedback thread, I’m going to assume anyone reading it has already finished the living story.

But I definitly want to say something about this last update of the LS, as it deserves a lot of harsh critic itself – Warning: Spoiler.

  • The way it was presented was just horrible. Scarlet was wounded? Why exactly? Did we seriously kill her by finishing her? With stability?

I missed this as well. Perhaps I wasn’t paying attention to Scarlet’s position during the last phase of the fight, but I was rather confused as to why the destruction of the Prime Hologram injured Scarlet (or how she wound up in the center?)

Though by Scarlet’s End, I got the impression that her remaining (if there was any) sanity was about to be lost and her mind was at its end. Her being physically injured was just extra. Using a finisher is just symbolizing a definite end through game mechanics I guess.

*The characters of the LS performed very badly in the last personal story instance.

Performed as in dialogue, Braham/Marjory getting injured, etc.? Should clarify.

  • It’s zergy, not challenging due to boss fight mechanics, only challenging due to laggs and gear check.

I get the feeling there would be a riot if it was anything more challenging. Despite it being very zergy, you still see the countless people getting pulled by Assault Knights, or the people getting pewpew laser’d during the Prime Hologram fight. ANet still has a lot to do to raise the player skill level gradually.

  • The dialogues were just horrible.

I thought it was fine. Though feedback wise, you should give examples of what you thought was horrible and why.

  • Sense and lore is completly missing.

I always get a bit confused when people say there’s no lore. Maybe there’s no references to GW1 or so (there doesn’t need to be really), but we still get the short stories and reveals through dialogue and NPC text regarding characters. This isn’t the most lore heavy example, but we do have small references to it here and there. Like Commodore Lawson Marriner (grandson of Cobiah who was the founder of the rebuilt Lion’s Arch) who we had to escort in Escape from Lion’s Arch.

And now we have the awakening of Mordremoth. In my eyes, we’re building a tale. But maybe I’m misreading this.

  • Why did Scarlet need all these weapons just to attack Lion’s Arch?

From my understanding. The probes were used to find the ley lines. The alliances were just to build a force to take over LA. Marionette was used to… I don’t really know, a distraction? To kill some more enemy forces? Drill was used to interrupt the ley lines to awaken Mordremoth.

  • What about all the other dragons in the meantime? What about the Tengu?

Primordus is still underground. Fighting the dwarves? Kralkatorrik is in Crystal Desert. Jormag is somewhere in the Shiverpeak Mountains. Zhaitan is dead (I believe). The Tengu are using their OP arrows to rain down obliteration in front of their door. Probably political issues or not willing to step into “human” affairs.

Just my thoughts and stuff. Not arguing, just trying to provide possible answers.

So now that LS S1 is over...

in Living World

Sera.6539

I’ll determine the list by the ones I kept playing after achievements were obtained.

-Flame and Frost Retribution
-Super Adventure Box 1
-Dragon Bash
-Sky Pirates of Tyria
-Bazaar of the Four Winds
-Queen’s Jubilee
-Clockwork Chaos
-Super Adventure Box 2
-Twilight Assault
-Wintersday 2013
-Origin of Madness
-Battle for Lion’s Arch

Main themes: dungeons, fun activities, farming, boss battles.

Best of the themes…

Dungeon probably was Sky Pirates of Tyria. I loved the challenge and atmosphere of Aetherblade Retreat – downing Mai Trin and Horrik in a time frame was awesome with the party I was with. Everyone pulled their own weight and worked perfectly despite being a PUG.

Fun activities, SAB for sure (Tribulation Mode was rage-inducing though). But Sanctum Sprint is still my favorite daily activity.

Farming goes to Clockwork Chaos for sure. That event alone probably funded 3/4 my money for Meteorlogicus. I had fun doing it too (can’t beat having fun while farming).

Boss battles is a tie between Queen’s Jubilee, Origins of Madness and Battle for Lion’s Arch. Liadri was tough to fight, but succeeding felt amazing. Marionette concept was great, but reliance on others killed it a bit. Battle for Lion’s Arch is a bit problematic, but I enjoy the Prime Hologram fight. Battle for Lion's Arch Open Issues and Tips

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: Sera.6539

Sera.6539

Achievements that require almost superhuman care in timing attunements and ranged damage, because meleeing is 90% discouraged throughout the entire event, are not primarily going to get players to play it as you had intended. They’re going to leech the map, get their tags, and stand in a safe spot the rest of the fight. This puts everyone else at a disadvantage.

Just wanted to comment on this specifically. It doesn’t require superhuman care. Just a little bit. Turn off auto attack, watch your buff bar, proceed as normal. I got both the attunement and laser achievements doing the boss “as intended (ranging was probably intended merely due to the damage lasers can cause standing up close).” It’s just people are lazy and don’t want to do any work. If anything, ANet should close up methods for people to be lazy. Besides ensuring the achievement unlocks correctly, there’s nothing really wrong with them (besides being group-temporary and the laser insta-deathing you if you spawn at the wrong time).

Except the event is timed and if you’re seen running around not attacking (because you can’t safely get to an attunement aoe because you value not taking damage by a giant purple stripe on the ground or getting one-shotted by a non-telegraphed random stomp by the hologram itself), you’ll get yelled at and ridiculed for “leeching”.

So you get what you can and launch your attack in earnest, while avoiding attacks, and oops there goes your attunement in mid-volley or grenade toss. Oh well, next time a full server is able to kill all three knights, you’ll get another shot at it.

Mmhmm.

Never seen a non-telegraphed random stomp, on high, medium, and low graphics. Also, it’s not like you have to complete both attunement and laser achievements in one run. Make it easier on your life and do one then the other. That must be some server/overflow you’re on that people call leeching if you’re in the active battlefield.

I am not advocating for group-temporary achievements. I hate them too. But the Prime Hologram achievements (specifically) are very doable, and are quite simple, barring other people.

I have to agree the instant dead on spawning in is a bit annoying. It would be much better if an invulnerable state was given to us, or if it spawned us in a safe spot first (that couldn’t be re-accessed).

But barring the spawn, it is moderately easy to obtain the Prime Hologram achievements. I did both legit, I just made sure to be extra careful about my auto attacks (and attunement) and position.

Sera.6539

After finishing the personal story, I was happy about the end being accomplished, but I was left with an empty feeling. The same one I get after any video game ends, everything is over. At the start of living story, I wasn’t sure what was going on and what to expect. I didn’t care about much of it at all really (this isn’t meant to be a backhanded compliment, I swear). But then things started building more and more. We started to have more characters introduced (or now what people like to call Destiny’s Edge 2.0). There was new life.

I could make more memories, I could go on another journey with my friends and these new characters. I could feel as if I was a part of something and influencing something (this feeling can be achieved in a preset plot, it doesn’t have to be sandbox). I started caring about the characters, whether they lived or died, whether they suffered. The living story was able to stir emotions, so that by itself is more than enough. The memories, laughs, and loot were just extra.

I’ve enjoyed the challenges over this past year, the evolution of helpful NPCs, and the yet to be concluded mysteries that remain. While I personally still stress about temporary achievements every 2 weeks or so, I still have fun. I may have complained or raged over the past year, but overall it’s been great. I can’t wait to see what will happen next.

So thank you for your hard work and efforts to continuously give us players content to experience and enjoy.

A serious request - Group Achievements

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: Sera.6539

Sera.6539

I like the group events, but I agree it is somewhat disappointing to rely on random players to get some achievements.

I did Marionette a number of times but failed most of that LS because there were never enough players.

I tried rescuing citizens the best I could when LA was under attack, but players always zerged and we never reached 1200, so I’ll never have the Hero of Lions Arch title.

Hero of Lion’s Arch title isn’t obtained by reaching 1200 citizens saved. I never reached 1200 citizens during Escape From Lion’s Arch, I still have the title. It’s obtained by defeating Scarlet in this LS. So long as you have the Spinal Blade backpiece (in any form), you can skip straight to Scarlet and skip the Prime Hologram fight.

However, I would love it if ANet stopped with group achievements as well. Although I finished the achievements last night, it’s frustrating to have them be temporary and rely on other players. Queen’s Gauntlet was excellent as that was individual ability.

This, 100%.

I was wondering why it was so quiet around this forum. It really saddens me that those in charge think his interaction is jeopardizing the company.

Communication is absolutely necessary. Players speaking their mind and having no response isn’t communication. It’s talking to a 2 way mirror, hoping someone is on the other side.

I played another MMO once that didn’t have active developer response, but an active community manager that was practically omnipresent. Everyone enjoyed getting responses and having open communication. It made the company seem less cash grabby (which trust me, they needed that) When he got removed from that position, everyone was furious.

Don’t sever great communication like that, ANet. It hurts the community, and will hurt your game too.

Tequatl concerns and pros!

2.) As we saw with Scarlet its hard to get everyone to work together. Time will tell how the timer will work but this will be interesting to see if servers and everyone will split and actually achieve each role needed to defeat the boss.

There was no real loss if you failed the Scarlet event. You still got a hefty amount of the end reward. If what someone else said is true, and there are two separate rewards (how much you can take him down, and whether or not you actually succeed), success of the event could very well depend on how good the rewards are.

My main concern is whether or not this will be a daily boss. Like others have said, with current bosses, people don’t go back to kill a boss if they’ve already gotten the reward. I know that during the Scarlet invasions, I was the only one at Teq at one point and tried to kill him solo (it just took too kitten long). This could either make it easier or more difficult (depending on scaling and amount of coordination needed).

Most of the bosses definitely needed a revamp anyway (as most were simply defeated by people going AFK and pressing 1). However they need to make sure the balance between difficulty and reward isn’t skewed. I’m actually more curious as to if this actually has some living story story (yes I said story twice), or if it’s similar to SAB. SAB had hints of story, but nothing further.

SAB Tribulation / Hardmode World 2 Guide?

Two things to keep in mind, since not all people have them in their videos (like Shiven1892).

1. Make sure you know where the Raccoon King and shops are. The Raccoon Kings don’t really have any hidden traps near them (I didn’t notice any when I went through TM), so you can usually beeline to them, unlike the Queen Bee Dogs in World 1.

2. There are 4 shops per zone. Zone secret guides can tell you where those are. I found that those weren’t really booby trapped either.

All in all, I actually found World 2’s TM to be easier than World 1 (minus some jumping around ice spikes in 2-3). I’m guessing that Josh Foreman deemed some parts of the levels difficult enough and didn’t booby trap everything like in World 1.

Why are people so kitten ed at the Trib nerf?

Can someone please explain me which difficulty in any game ever is NOT trial and error?

I’d have to say Dark Souls. There’s a lot of death in that, and most (if not all) possible death is telegraphed. You can clearly see where you faulted, whether it be bad timing, or failure to dodge, etc. Yes you will die a lot and you will learn, but it’s nothing like going forward and seeing if you get hit by a random spike trap.

Trial and error like TM is more about how much patience you have to find all the invisible traps.

I’ve got a great idea. The bugs reported in TM? Don’t fix them. At all. Spawning in lava, spawning in spikes.. the ones being reported now.. leave them. It’s supposed to be “hard mode”, right? Leave all the server-client issues and bugs in TM because maybe it’ll shut up the hardcores.

Seriously though, I’m not happy to hear some fixes to NM bled into TM and I don’t even play TM. I want the hardcores to have their content too (and I’m SICK of every time something like this happens, it’s time to call the rest of the playerbase ‘noobs’ in revenge. No. Cut it out. No one wanted TM nerfed. No one. Talk to the Devs about this – no one asked for TM to be changed).

It took around 4 days to gather the feedback and make the changes featured in today’s patch. Yes the bugs suck, but it’s only been a few hours since the patch (assuming you’re talking about the new checkpoint issues). Give it a day or three for a fix, not a few hours.

I never really saw anyone complain about TM (besides the P2W issue and whatnot). It seems like a limitation on the design side to have some NM changes bleed into TM. Perhaps we’ll have an answer later.

Missing Wood Platform for Honeycomb in 1-3?

Tribulation Mode related post.

Just wondering if this was an intended change, if anyone knows the path. All videos I’ve seen show a wooden piece in the corner ahead of me, and it’s clearly missing. I’ve been trying alternate paths, but just fall into lava everywhere I attempt to jump.

EDIT: Got it, it’s just a tiny pillar amidst all the lava.

Everytime there’s “hard” / challenging content, they just go and nerf it because of all the people who keep complaining they can’t do it… .

Hard content is not meant to be done by everyone, especially not within the first week of release.

After trying many times yoruselves and eventually managing to do hard content, they nerf it because of all the complaining…it’s almsot as if they’re just laughing at you and say: “well.. nice you’ve tried and got everything through skill/perseverance, now we’ll give everyone else the achievements for free.”

It’s really saddening this happens everytime.
I’m glad they didn’t nerf Liadri.

Many of the issues weren’t hard due to skill barrier or concept, they were hard because of the game engine. Things like knockback into rapids as the geysers lowered – despite you being in the clear, getting knocked into rapids on random objects despite you being in clear. Not to mention people don’t really enjoy being flung halfway across the level for one mistake. Other things were simply not ideal in player minds like long stretches of content with lack of checkpoints where one mistake in the room killed you (and this is normal, not Tribulation). I don’t believe that’s the type of difficulty Josh Foreman was going for.

Difficulty due to the game engine, even if unintended by the developer, is still a skill barrier. Yes, the geysers were buggy, but with practice, skill, observation, and timing, even that bugginess could be mastered.

I do believe Josh Foreman said somewhere in that large thread that he wants to control the difficulty, and doesn’t want the game engine to dictate that, if possible.

I’m glad for the changes. He’s been willing to listen to tons of people criticize his work, take it with a calm attitude, work out a solution and keep people up to date. I love SAB, and I certainly don’t want to dissuade him from creating imaginative / difficult levels in the future. But some things just don’t work out well combined with the engine.

Any1 try the cave in the waterfall right after the raft?

That one works. Flower after the crocodile sends you to the middle. Lower flower sends you into the waterfall.
