Because obviously the only way to make a boss fight in a MMO is to take a normal enemy, increase their HP through the stratosphere and give them the ability to one-shot everything.
MMOs in general should just die out already. GW2 is the final nail in their coffin.
Just increasing the mobs HP is a lazy way of programming, getting one shotted and not even seeing it coming, it’s rubbish, beating on a mob for ages, it’s boring.
And that’s what all MMOs do – they don’t make the boss fight involve strategy or a series of actions in steps, it’s just a matter of adding a few zeroes to their HP and power. Therefore MMOs have hit a wall where they can’t progress and should die off.
Obviously ANet thinks you’re playing it wrong. Get out to the dungeons and grind!
To actually reach end-game. Because this game wasn’t meant to be played alone and that’s the only way I’m able to play it. There is NO ONE around.
Arena Net need to speak out against elitism, not let it fester and grow into a widespread issue. Otherwise the community will become stagnant and spiteful.
Otherwise? It already IS.
at this point i feel anet should stop trying to be innovative and fully go back to mmo roots because it does not seem like they can do “different” and “good” at the same time.
I think MMOs should be given on up entirely because they’re just not working. Every one of them does one or two things differently than the others but everything else exactly the same. That’s not innovation, that’s putting a new coat of paint on an old car and calling it brand new.
Obviously there is no where else to take the MMO genre so why bother with it anymore? Declare the Skinner box WoW the winner and make something else that’s actually fun.
I think it’s just the nature of the genre – MMO RPG combat is and always will be a bland, boring rinse-and-repeat matter of just either mashing hotkeys in a set order or clicking on a picture at the bottom of the screen.
The inclusion of a dodge in this game is a sign the devs had an idea to do something different and interesting, but by limiting it to only two per a few seconds gave up and stuck with the old, stale system.
The only system I’ve seen in a MMO RPG that’s even remotely interesting is Terra’s.
People actually playing the game instead of grinding dungeons 24/7.
It’s a poor excuse for a MMO because there’s no one to be found anywhere except in endgame dungeons.
It’s got the “Massive” part right. The world is huge and interesting. But it’s missing the “Multiplayer” because it’s segregated the community so badly by giving no one any reason to go anywhere in the world except level 80 dungeons.
Is this really the best MMO the world has to offer? If so then to hell with MMOs.
Because obviously the only way to make a boss fight in a MMO is to take a normal enemy, increase their HP through the stratosphere and give them the ability to one-shot everything.
MMOs in general should just die out already. GW2 is the final nail in their coffin.
Because not only is it completely going back on what the devs said they’d never do, it’s splintering an already piss-poor and empty community.
Now people will be demanding you have more powerful and rarer gear than before to play with them because otherwise they’ll complain you’re dragging them down. In the end, only the botters win.
It’s a good idea that would actually save this game, so you can be sure they won’t do it.
“More stuff to do” doesn’t mean, “More grinding for a stat advantage”.
They could have just offered new weapon and armor skins instead which is what I hear the first game did.
That’s because the game doesn’t want you to be in those zones. It wants you to join the zerg and grind high level areas like a bot.
It’s the only explanation.
MMO combat in general is a crappy system. It’s all about just pressing hotkeys or clicking on little pictures at the bottom of the screen at certain times. The fact that you can only dodge twice per a few seconds just makes it more obvious the GW2 developers had no idea how they wanted to actually make the game play.
They thought they could just bolt on a new move to a bombed out and depleted system and it’d make everything fresh and exciting. Guess again.
You don’t pay a subscription. I just want you to sit and think about that for a minute.
And you didn’t get the game for free either did you? Why don’t you think about that.
Let’s see…
Entire mobs of people will run the new dungeons like bots looking for better-rated gear and to get resistance to the new condition, and everyone else will still be wandering around completely empty zones because they’re not level 80 or just want to explore the maps.
What’s not to be excited about?
Oh just wait until you get to some of the other zones. It just gets worse and worse from there.
_ If someone wants to play for a thousand hours to get an item that is so rare that other players can’t realistically acquire it, that rare item should be differentiated by its visual appearance and rarity alone, not by being more powerful than everything else in the game._
Is that why dungeon equipment with the best stat bonuses require multiple runs through them and they’re “soulbound” the moment you buy them so the ONLY way to get them is grinding a dungeon?
“Fun impacts loot collection. The rarest items in the game are not more powerful than other items, so you don’t need them to be the best. The rarest items have unique looks to help your character feel that sense of accomplishment, but it’s not required to play the game."
The rarest items in the game have always been more powerful than more common items. Only the legendary weapons are there for looks instead of being a significant upgrade.
“Because, like Guild Wars before it, GW2 doesn’t fall into the traps of traditional MMORPGs. It doesn’t suck your life away and force you onto a grinding treadmill; it
doesn’t make you spend hours preparing to have fun rather than just having fun;”
Hahahahah, where’d you hear that one?
Leaving one zone where you’ve finally finished into another even though you’re the recommended level or better will get you steamrolled by the garden variety enemies there. And because of the level scaling, your one and only advantage is the stat boosts higher level weapons and armor give you.
In short, that “manifesto” is just a BS PR release. GW2 is just another MMO like any other – a skinner box with hotkeys. And it’ll be my first and last.
That’s because nothing high level drops from anything that isn’t a level 80 zone and there are no quests for level 80s anywhere except in 80 zones.
Bad game design is killing this game and no amount of new content is going to fix that. New players are going to give up the first time they need help with something because no one’s around to even ask.
Don’t worry it’s only temporary.
This game’s DOA and they’re not doing anything to help it.
Bottom line, it’s not at all a pessimistic projection to imagine that Guild Wars 2 now takes just as long to gear up in as any other EverQuest clone in the world.
Short answer: Yes.
When you started playing the game and it had other players everywhere you went sometimes you had to play in the overflow server to about 2 months later being lucky to see even a tumbleweed in 99% of zones you start to wonder how healthy the game really is.
They’ve had too many as it is. They spend more time running the forums with an iron fist in an iron glove than working on their game.
First and last chance I’m ever giving ANet unless they pull a 180 real fast.
Patch notes for today say it’s been sped up by 33%.
Right now I’m trying this site’s suggestion.

So far level 43-45 and not doing too badly.
Yep. Which makes it the only minion actually worth using.
@Blaeys.3102: The problem with the idea that there is more to MMOs than playing with friends is that this is a cart-before-the-horse issue. Any design where players can’t play with friends is a failure.
The current state of this game is worse than all the others that have come before it in this sense, and until this is rectified, the current game design has failed.
Sure there are other issues going on for long term health, but failing to allow friends to play together is the largest error that could possibly be made in a game like this. Friend networks are how these games are sold and how they persist.
Hear, hear!
I play on Tarnished Coast and while there naturally has been spread and drop-off since launch, everyplace I go has a decent population. And I go everyplace, working on a second toon and running my main around on world completion and taking pics for a website.
I’m on Jade Quarry. It’s supposedly a full server and yet I still see no one anywhere on the PvE zones.
So far I’ve changed servers three times because of the lack of other human players. To say I’m not happy with how this game has been turning out a few months after release is an understatement.
Everyone left for Orr. Because it’s the only area that gives them rewards that match their levels.
The level scaling thing really didn’t help at all – instead of helping make it more attractive for higher level players to revisit lower areas, it just hurts everyone trying to get through those areas so they can finish them and never travel there again.
I’m trying to go through worlds just because I want to see everything the game has, but I may never manage it thanks to the level scaling system dragging me back down to levels where garden-variety enemies can kill me in 3-4 hits. Ask for a group to travel with? Hahahahahahah! Good one. They’re all on Orr remember? Because that’s where all the high level rewards are.
There is absolutely zero reason to go back to a lower-level zone once you’ve found everything in it unless it has a dungeon you want to run or a story quest. This game has failed absolutely miserably at creating a community because what’s in it for a higher level character? What’s their incentive to help someone else instead of sticking to their own thing? Nothing.

“The Risen enemies are challenging but in a good, not pointlessly annoying way.”
“Wow, look at all the people in this zone!”
I just read the staff’s auto attack can hit thieves even if they’re invisible. No idea if this is true but worth a shot right?
So because just one person evaded you in a match you think the entire class is broken?
Sense. You’re making none.
I prefer the charr. I find the enemies there much less annoying (so many wolves and elementals in norn land!) and I like the charr dialogue.
But yet the servers are “High” and “Full.”
Where the hell IS everyone? PvP?
This tactic works great for 1-2 enemies at a time, but as the game progresses you’ll have a much harder time of it because your initiative and skills will recharge slower than the enemies’ HP depletes.
If you can permanently stealth then it’s not a balance issue, it’s a glitch.
Your staff has a long range. Use it to initiate fights and then switch to something more personal like the scepter or axe when your enemy closes the distance. In PvE you can kill a surprising number of enemies before they even reach you by doing this.
The reason you inflict conditions on yourself with some skills is because one of your heal skills is “Consume Conditions”. It’s self-explanatory.
The #4 dagger-off hand skill is deviously fun. Not only does it hit multiple targets like the thief’s dancing dagger, but it causes blindness and removes three conditions from you – to apply it to your targets.
Feast of Corruption is your “You die NOW” button. Then perform your evil laugh.
Death Shroud doesn’t regen your health. Saving it for when you’re near death may not always be the best thing to do.
Compared to my thief, I’m having almost too much fun with a necro. Here’s a really good guide to help you get started:
http://gw2guidez.com/blog/gw2-necromancer-leveling-build-best-necromancer-pve-build/
Remember your staff has a very long range and you have two weapon sets. I use a staff to initiate a fight with marks and then switch to a scepter/dagger when the fight begins in earnest.
I’ve killed many enemies before they’ve even gotten close enough to hit me with this tactic. I only wish I’d picked this class first.
Its not a server population problem, its a player problem.
The majority of people simply camp in Orr, farming.Try posting in the Guild section of this forum, looking for a casual guild, in my experience casuals tend to play events for fun rather than farm.
Wrong orr is dead too.
Wrong. Orr is very much alive. Can’t go ten seconds without running into someone.
…someone with a brown bear.
No. Someone with a whole bunch of friends yelling, “Everyone, COME!”
Stealth is not that powerful. First of all it’s only for 4 seconds at a time maximum, and that requires points in the toughness trait line for the thief, which really doesn’t do much for them because the only difference between a thief having low or high armor is whether it only takes a causal wave hello or a light breeze to kill them.
Second, attacking while stealthed gives you the “revealed” condition which means you can’t hide again for 2 seconds.
Third, a thief is not invincible or even protected at all when in stealth. Projectiles that were launched before it cloaked will hit the thief. And area effect attacks will hit it.
Just make a warrior or guardian instead. Thieves are worthless in everything except PvP.
Warrior and guardian are the only two classes even AreaNet designed the game for.
The game needs bug fixes and people actually playing the game before it needs new areas.
What good is a new zone when it’s going to just be swarmed for a week and then everyone will vanish again?
It’s posts like that Vzur that make me wonder why I bother trying to play this game still. The community’s a kitten joke.
Not sure if you understood the tone of how I meant it. I wasn’t saying it was a good thing, or that its how I feel. It’s just the impression I get from other players.
The problem is what you’re saying is the absolute truth. This game has zero community unless you’re into PvP exclusively.
I wanted to do the story first before messing with any of that. “LOL” says the GW2 community.
PvP.
This game’s PvE is more dead than a risen who’s been cremated.
It’s not just low level areas. It’s everywhere. I’ve been trying to explore the Straits of Devastation for 3 days now and I’ve only run into 4 human players over that entire period of time. At prime-time hours. On a server that’s “Full.”
This game is practically a Risen itself.
Best tip ever. Seriously, thank you.
The transportation costs for getting out of that hellhole Orr are absurd.
After the same thing happens to you 15 more times come back and tell us if it’s still funny omerk.
It’s a prelude of things to come. The level design and enemies just get worse from there with enemies that respawn even faster than the dredge there and every one of them capable of applying cripple and poison on you every attack.
Level design is one of GW2’s weakest areas no question.
