Full set of 5 unique skills for both dual-wield weapon sets: P/P and D/D – Make it happen
PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.
As i see it, the deadly arts traitline is about traps, poison
and enhancing your non critical damage.
It shouldn’t really be about poison though. Weakness and vulnerability make sense, but not poison. DA should shred or overcome the target’s defenses, poison does neither.
So is the name daredevil or enforcer?
It allows you to wield an Enforcer as a weapon.
Minor Adept – Serpent’s touch – Stealing causes vulnerability.
This is not ideal, as it does not reduce target healing.
Poison on Steal is useful for many builds for that alone, since many builds do not actually have the Poison condition. My build would not, without Serpent’s Touch.I understand, but the poison on steal should be in SA, not DA, where it belongs.
Being even more fair, I’d put it into the Trickery Specialization because it’s the one that “improves” the Steal skill and has some condition thingies on it.
That could work too because before the Trait changes, Trickery improves condition damage. Also it has access to Confusion on Steal.

The difficulty of that is that it would quickly lead to “Pick one, and only one Steal enhancement”
Which is, essentially, a de facto nerf.
Let’s not ask for more nerfs. We suffer enough as it is.
Actually, it opens up a possiblity to have a steal enhancement from each trait line.
Please rename it to “Five Finger Heart Exploding Technique”.
You’re using a staff not your fingers.
Also, allow it to crit.
If you poke the eye, yeah sure, but you’re poking the chest and some professions have heavy armor. Even a half naked Elementalist is covered in dirt armor.
Perhaps you are right.
Maces, Hammers, and the Revenent Staff should not be able to critically hit at all.
There is no way that is imbalancing or foolish.
Particularly since blunt weapons are significantly better against heavy armor than bladed weapons, not worse.
Blunt weapons are not significantly better against heavy armor, that is a common misconception. Rapiers are specially made against heavy armor. A well-made rapier can even pierce a heavy armor, otherwise the wielder will try to find weak points on the armor and exploit it — which mean, it can deal critical damage.
Blunt weapons, on the other hand, can only stop the heavy armored target by knocking the target down — not necessarily dealing damage — critical or otherwise. Critical hits from blunt weapons are only possible against non-heavy armor target.
pulmonary means lungs so I guess that’s a reason for them to not call it heart stopping whatever fingers
Pulmonary is the blood flow to your lungs, not the lungs. If that is interrupted, you’ll have a hard time breathing. However that is just the effect, not the cause. To make your lungs fail, the target is the heart or the arteries around the lungs.
The only way you can really damage the lung is when you puncture it with a sharp object, other than that, it is too flexible to even get affected by any blunt weapons.
Minor Adept – Serpent’s touch – Stealing causes vulnerability.
This is not ideal, as it does not reduce target healing.
Poison on Steal is useful for many builds for that alone, since many builds do not actually have the Poison condition. My build would not, without Serpent’s Touch.
I understand, but the poison on steal should be in SA, not DA, where it belongs.
You’re using a staff not your fingers.
It’s a Physical skill, aka an utility, it’s not linked to any weapon and it’s likely done using your hands.
Could also be with your head, shoulder, or foot (see Warrior/Berserker). Making it specific to fingers break immersion in so many levels.
“Pulmonay Impact” covers any physical attacks regardless of which physical skill you use. It still makes sense even if you use your “donkey”.

Daredevil means someone without fear so the name will never work on Thief’s spec because we always die falling from cliffs due to fear.
If ArenaNet keeps the name, then we should be immune from fear — which will never happen because ArenaNet gets a kick seeing us fall from cliffs like lemmings.
you’ll still be feared off cliffs
but instead of screaming to your death
you’ll go head first.
straight into the afterlifeNo, not anymore. Soon we’ll have staff to spin as we fall; allowing us to turn into a helicopter.
Or the staff turns into a glider…
But then we wouldn’t be everyones’ go to source for safety. Everyone can shout “Get to the choppa!” and grab hold of Thief’s legs and take flight to escape the hammer train. We’d have the advantage of instant takeoffs and hovering vs gliderz.
Not if you can bend air…
Hope it will not be condition oriented…
Me too. Staff doesn’t really seem like a condition weapon to me. We’ll find out soon enough though!
Smacked with a staff in the;
head -> daze
crotch -> stun
liver -> knockdown
kidney -> chill
leg -> cripple
hip -> immobilize
nose/mouth -> bleeding
temple – > blindness
chest -> weaknesswith the exception of the nose/mouth, that’s not really conditions.
the issue is that there are – to my mind – 3 sorts of condition:
- Control Conditions – hard and soft CC. blinds, stuns, knockbacks, etc.
- Multiplier Conditions – conditions that alter the numbers. Vulnerability, weakness, etc.
- Damaging Conditions – the ones that Condition Damage users want. this group is pretty under-represented on thief, which is why we’re one of the worst CD builds around.
so to be a good condition damage weapon, we need more bleed/poison/burning/torment/confusion.
You should have said it clearly in the first place.
Anyway, ever heard of Spiked Staff of Hundred Impaling Wounds – or – Burning Staff of Agonizing Fury – or – Eternal Tormenting Staff of Seinfeld – or – Staff of Thousand Years of Death?
Here’s one of the problems with our core spec. For poison for example, it forces us to spec DA and SA…they need to keep the poison in one trait line. So any proposed fixes should address this problem.
DA should never have condition damage in it. It should be pure power-based trait line.
Each major trait in each line should offer an option for offense, hybrid, and defense/support. So the choices is not between which offensive trait I should take but instead if I want to risk it all, be balance, or less risk.
For example – DA;
Minor Adept – Serpent’s touch – Stealing causes vulnerability.
Minor Master – Lotus Strike – Weaken vulnerable targets.
Minor GM – Exposed Weakness – (no change)
This way, each of these traits actually compliments each other without relying on poison and condition damage.
Examples continue;
Major Adept:
- Dagger Training (offensive) – Dagger attacks while dual-wielding daggers has a chance to strike with both weapons. Off-hand dagger deals 25% less damage.
- Mug (hybrid) – (no change)
- Siphon Speed (defensive) – Cripple your target when you use a healing skill. Gain Swiftness.
Major Master:
- Revealed Training (offensive) – (no change)
- Panic Strike (hybrid) – (no change)
- Deadly Trapper (defensive) – Trap’s damage scales from Power instead of Condition Damage. Trap recharges are reduced.
Major GM:
- Executioner (offensive) – (no change)
- Improvisation (hybrid) – (no change)
- Pain Response (defensive) – Gain regeneration and remove conditions when struck while your health is below the threshold. (15s cooldown)
I believe that this approach will allow a lot of build diversity.
Hope it will not be condition oriented…

I don’t mean to, and I couldn’t say if Karl’s to blame. but whatever’s happening, there’s a disparity that needs addressed. either a specific dev’s messed up, or the team as a whole has, but there needs to be some consistency.
They have been consistent, but no to what we wanted but to what they wanted. I believe that Karl is doing his best in making sense of the Thief — we all know that Thief can suck in PvP but dominate in WvW. So there is already inconsistency with the profession. What we really need is for them to go back in separating skills stats for each game mode because each skill does not function the same way in each game mode
I understand that they choose to consolidate the skills to make their job easier (balancing one set of skill across the board instead of for each game mode), but the problem with this approach is what we’re seeing now. They want a fuel efficient car that runs on city streets and also qualify for NASCAR — that’s never gonna happen.
All I want is someone to say “We hear you”
If they’re working on it, I want to be told so. If they don’t know how to fix it, say so.
It’s not the lack of active changes, exactly; The lack of communication about the concerns of the community is the major part of what bothers me.
They always have this policy to never say anything about “who”, “when”, “why”, or “how” unless they have officially announced it. So yeah, we’ll never see them posting even a simple “we hear you” without official internal approval.
Do I think it’s 100% his own fault? Probably not. I don’t think people are saying that it’s literally his and only his responsibility.
Well, then let’s not name names, instead use “ArenaNet” rather than “Karl”.
But as the lead of his team, he represents them as a whole, and therefore must accept the credit/blame on their behalf, and clearly there’s a disparity in feedback between the things his team is working on and the things that Robert’s team is working on.
We don’t really know the internal working of ArenaNet so from the outside, your perspective is shared with everyone including me. However, there’s also a possibility that all members of their team are consolidating their time to focus on one profession to get it ready for the reveal, so it is entirely possible that some professions are pushed to the back burner. Since a lot of the professions have already been revealed, they maybe consolidating all their time into one profession that is set to be revealed next.
In my experience, each team might have their own responsibility but often times, the other teams resources are reallocated to help out the other struggling team especially when there’s a deadline to meet. Then when the struggling team is done, their resources are now reallocated to help out the other teams. This is typical in any big company.
My point is, the lack of feedback about other professions might be caused by resources allocation within the company. Since they are not working on it because they are helping other teams for the next reveal, there will be no new information to share.
Just something to think about.
theres this weird bug where ricochet is gone, anyone else having that bug?
Funny enough I spec for Ankle Shot hoping that ricochet was embedded into the trait — nope, just wishful thinking.
Yeah the tooltip is out of whack. The damage and the range gives wrong information.
Daredevil means someone without fear so the name will never work on Thief’s spec because we always die falling from cliffs due to fear.
If ArenaNet keeps the name, then we should be immune from fear — which will never happen because ArenaNet gets a kick seeing us fall from cliffs like lemmings.
Try not to put all the blames for bad Thief profession on one designer because it is a team effort when it comes to balancing it. As far as we know, Karl might have a lot good ideas for Thief that other designer like Robert and Roy just shut down — thus it looks like their professions look a lot better.
Again, this is just a speculation but I won’t be like one of you guys who blames a particular designer.
However, all the blame will always fall on the head of the balance team — that is his responsibility.
Nice try. Ankle Shot does not increase weapon range.
Try harder next time.
Umm.. Hate to break it to you but it DOES increase the range on pistol skills even if it’s not listed on the tooltip, try it yourself in-game if you don’t believe me.
I’ve been using P/P ever since the update and switched to Shortbow because the reduction in range is very noticeable.
If that is the case, then we’re looking at two different, very inconsistent bug.
Sorry for thinking that you’re just trolling since that is not the case for me.
Nice try. Ankle Shot does not increase weapon range.
Try harder next time.
Kasmeer all the way.
To everyone who actually thought we were getting rifle GIVEN the data mined image before hand:
To those who believe that datamined information is as good as the official one.
I would like to it go back up to 2 boon steal, it went to 1 before chain went from 3-2 to 4-1 initiative.
Yeah the cost is out of whack. It should be 2-3 cost since Larcenous Strike deals more damage and strips boon while Flanking Strike only evades. The cost of 4 for Flanking Strike it just stupid.
Has anyone played Braid? There’s a section where any time you rewind, a shadow of yourself redoes what you just rewound while you can do whatever you like. Clever puzzle mechanic. Could also be interesting having clones that mimic what you do instead of just AI that do their own thing like Mesmer clones.
That would be weird and ackward to control…what if your clone is behind your target, you have to turn around so your clone will hit them? O.o?
How do we know this is not the Ranger? The official post did not say it was thief.
Ranger will most likely show a pet in the concept art too.
Their pet is in the picture, it is some sort of Shadow beast the ranger has. I outlined it for you.
Wow, you could be right.
Back in my day it was a single attack that initiated as an evasive strike and ended in a second that ripped 2 boons from the target.
It cost a bit more to use up front, though.
It never strip boon when it was a single attack. The boon strip was added at the same time when they separate the skill into two. EDIT: My mistake, I just look it up and there was a time when it was a single skill that strip one boon.
(edited by Sir Vincent III.1286)
Nah. The trade off for missing and blinded is that you can reuse the skill to evade attacks.
thief clones + shatter?
Probably just shadow clones without the shatter. Instead, the clone looks exactly like us that can deal damage albeit less —- maybe 25%- 30% damage. Then after a duration, the clone disappears and blinds or daze everyone around them or something.
Man, for some reason I thought of Zed when I saw that pic…. We could potentially swap places with the clones…
Mesmer already do that with their Sword skill…it means we may be able to do it too.
Not gonna lie, I kind of came to term with it being a staff.
It’s not like we have any other choice than to swallow another jagged blue pill.
I was a die hard Staff supporter and I still am. If rifle was release, I would have been kittened for real, but that’s it. I could understand if you didn’t like the weapon, and elite traits sucked, and cores trait are reduced to ash. Completely understand.
BUT THIS IS NOT THE CASE. it’s just a new weapon.
All of you switching chars cause Thief is getting Staff;
All of you who will stop playing because Thief is getting Staff;GOOD RIDDANCE, I tell you. For it shows how questionable your loyalty to the profession was in the first place. You didn’t even see traits or weapon skills but act like you are agonizing in injustice and oozing of some imaginary unsatisfactory performance by Anet.
GOOD RIDDANCE and see you in WvW on your mesmers.
It will be a delight Finishing you turncloaks with my Daredevil.
I wasn’t a fan of either rifle or staff, while I’m completly indifferent at the decision, your whole text kind of sweats hypocrisy. Both staff and rifle believers were in the same boat in terms of questionability towards the Thief class. If the outcome was Rifle, one of its believers would write the exact same thing with a few keywords changed.
I beg to differ. The hypocrit is the one who stops playing Thief because of an announced weapon to which nobody has any data on, wether weapon skill or trait quality… It is hypocrit and unfounded. As if playing with staff is the only option in this game. If we were indeed in the same boat, why are these people suddenly quitting?
I guess you’ll never know how I would react if Rifle was revealed instead, but it’s safe to say that whoever is about to quit a game or a character based on a look or/and without any information on weapon skills and trait, is being blatantly unreasonable and immature.Not to mention that Anet very surely took their opinions into account when building the character, and they are just going to leave like that? Hypocrisy.
Interesting… Evidence?
It’s called “reiteration process”, where they reiterate on good ideas for Thieves and toss it to the trash because Thief will be too OP for other professions. If Warrior will have a hard time dealing with Thief with the good idea, then that idea is trash during the reiteration process. That’s why all the good ideas never come into fruition.

Probably just shadow clones without the shatter. Instead, the clone looks exactly like us that can deal damage albeit less —- maybe 25%- 30% damage. Then after a duration, the clone disappears and blinds or daze everyone around them or something.
It’s an opt-out….very disappointed.
Karl is going for the high risk high reward philosophy. Can’t you see that he’s trying to be a Daredevil himself? Maybe we’ll even get a “Clown” specialisation in the future. High hopes man!
clown spec inc
Even as someone who never touches “rogue” class archetypes, I would immediately pre-purchase Heart of Thorns Ultimate edition, create a thief and make it my main if they get an Evil Clown elite spec announced.
A picture of Shaco from LoL pops in my head….perfect!
ArenaNet’s Elite Spec creative source on some professions.
GW2 Profession – X-Men
Mesmer -> Sway
Warrior -> Wolverine/Juggernaut
Engineer -> Forge
Elementalist -> Storm
Heist Master
A thief who steals the statues of the 6 gods from Divinity’s Reach shrines and drop it in combat for party buff.
“Batman” is more appropriate than “Daredevil”
Dev responded in Warrior forum answering a silly question, but we’ve never seen a Dev here for months…and they are talking about Dual Wielding and a possible expansion of Dual Wielding for Warrior. All the while that Thief is the Dual Wield Profession.
From the wiki: “Thieves also have their own special weapon skill types; dual wield skills, Stealth Attacks and shadowstep skills.”
I guess that part of the Thief is no longer “special” seeing that Warrior is taking that away too.

You think Dredevil is bad? what about Forge? kittenING FORGE!!
You mean this guy?
EDIT:
“My name is Forge. Building is what I do. But sometimes one must first destroy before one can create.”
— Forge
“daredevil” might be a name for a new armor with certain stat combination and not necessarily the name of the elite spec. Since we really don’t know much about it, speculating based on unconfirmed information makes the purpose of this thread a waste of time. Sorry.
Like Shiro, the Mallyx playstyle with Revenant could’ve been a Thief Daredevil thing. But you know… is Revenant instead.
Daredevil don’t work on Thief just like Dragonhunter don’t work on Guardians. It’s bad naming choice that they should reiterate a couple of hundred more times before release.
If ArenaNet choose a 2-handed weapon, then it is telling that they really don’t care enough for the profession — it’s an opt-out.
If they choose an off-hand, then it will show that they do care about the profession that they are willing to work with new mechanics that are outside the DPS box. That they are willing to improve the profession instead of giving it another boring DPS weapon.
Focus, shield, and torch would bring a lot of diversity in builds because none of these weapons is considered offensive weapons — they are more support or defensive than offensive. The possibility of Thief as a decent support profession can only be accomplished by using one of these weapons.
Thief with staff, rifle, or greatsword might look cool, but any of these weapons will only result into a boring DPS skill set that will not improve the profession what so ever in terms of both strategical and tactical.
With focus, as I have suggested before, they can create an Arcane Thief that not only steals random items, but also an expert at stealing buffs or disabling certain enemy skills. A control oriented Thief that lurks in the shadows. The PvP, PvE, WvW possibilities of this choice makes the Thief more versatile. In PvP, they can actually have the tools they need to defend a node after capping — instead of running away. Mobility will no longer be the only factor in choosing a Thief.
I strongly believe that an Arcane Thief using Focus is the best shot at improving this profession…however the likelihood of this happening really depends on the expertise of the game designer who should have at least several hours in successfully playing a Thief. Alas, this is not the case in ArenaNet so it is more than likely that we’ll get another boring DPS weapon.
Daredevil : a reckless person who enjoys doing dangerous things.
More accurately.
Daredevil : a Thief who was feared off a cliff.
LOL come on man be positive.! you actually gave me an idea.
… but managed to hung onto to the edge of the cliff, as the curious necromancer got close to see the Daredevil’s smashed body at the bottom, the cunning trickster, with imaginable speed, latched onto his garment and pulled him down the abyss. “lel” says the Daredevil, “oh he must be mad” he adds. As the Thief brushes the dusts off his shoulder, h he notices a herd of necro minions and demons also blindly and mindlessly jumping off, after their doomed master.
Daredevil carelessly shrugs. vanishes towards his next victim.
THE END.
I was actually comparing the daredevils who jumps off great heights as part of a thrilling experience, either from high cliffs towards a body of water below, or from top of tall buildings gliding down like flying squirrels or with parachute — meaning they jump off by choice.
Meanwhile, Thieves…you get the picture — nothing in Thief that catches what a daredevil is supposed to be.
Daredevil : a reckless person who enjoys doing dangerous things.
More accurately.
Daredevil : a Thief who was feared off a cliff.
Looking at the Warrior adrenaline change, it is only fair that our Initiative should have a based max of 15 initiatives and remove/replace Preparedness from our trait.
Then they should increase the initiative cost of offensive skills and reduce the cost of defensive skills. Example; in D/P, Black Powder should cost 2 while Heartseeker would cost 6. This will also give P/P more defensive options instead of burning all initiatives by using only 2 skills (BP+Unload).
The point is, they should really look at the Thief mechanic as a whole instead of focusing on just one.
While other professions can use all 5 skills at engagement, Thief are limited due to the cost of skills, the low max initiatives, and the shared cooldown while initiatives recharges. This mechanic needs to be balanced first.
one-hand or two-hand weapons will have to balance the same number of skills — 5.
one-handed:
3 dual wield skills (skill #3 from main-hand weapons)
2 off-hand skillstwo-handed:
5 skillsI don’t see the problem.
they also have to make sure that a skill on the 1-handed weapons isn’t too weak or too strong when combined with other 1-handers. what works decently on Sword/Focus might be useless/OP on pistol/focus
They only balance dagger and sword anyway and never care about pistol main hand, which means there’ll be less skills for them to balance compare to a 5-skills 2-handed.
Due to the devs having only all of their time set aside to work on more Thief content [/sarcasm] Our new weapon will likely only be one we can wield in a single hand (main or off-hand), that way they only need to make ~5 weapon skills for it.
except…
Main hand:
- 1 skill
- 2 skill
- 3 no-offhand skill
- 3 with pistol skill
- 3 with dagger skill
(5 skills)Off hand:
- 4 skill
- 5 skill
- 3 with sword skill
- 3 with dagger skill
- 3 with pistol skill
(5 skills)2-hand:
- 1 skill
- 2 skill
- 3 skill
- 4 skill
- 5 skill
(5 skills)and on top of this, main and off-hand weapons would need balanced with the other weapons’ skills in mind, while a 2-handed weapon only needs balanced with itself.
so it’d be less work to do a 2-handed weapon than a 1-handed weapon…
one-hand or two-hand weapons will have to balance the same number of skills — 5.

“Dare Devil” is in the same silly boat with “Sneak Thief”
Arcane Thief with Focus…gogo
A clip where 10+ Thiefs backstabs the same target in WvW needs to be included in the video….it’s a must. Preferably a Warrior as the target.
Another cool clip woul be to have 10+ Thieves summons Thieves Guild at the same time with the same effect from the LotR: Return of the King — “you and what army?” “This Army”
Check the Guild Bank
Enjoy.
oh kitten bro, someone went on selling spree
will tell Hellbore to use some of it for NA arenas
thanks a lot
No problem. Since now I have permission for deposit…more things to come. At least it gives me a reason to play this game again.
Lol if you are bored, try to organzite some stuff with guild. Will keep you busy :P
I would love that, unfortunately, my play time is limited and random. I only login when I can and play as long as I can.
