the poll is the order they implement. the changes will be introduced piecemeal and not after all changes are done…..

And isn’t that bad? All the mentioned changes affect the overall scoring. They might be working good as a whole together but it might perform really bad in parts. Thus, using incremental approach is questionable.

The pulsing stability makes necro conversion even more pointless, at one point they can convert it to fear and the next moment the pulsing will overwhelm the fear.

I still prefer the old long duration stability instead of the stack stability. Also, changing the number of people the cc skills (like guard lines, ele static, necro lines, ele lines etc) can affect makes blob busting harder.

That will be troublesome, relinking means people who transfer to guest server as a alternative way to “join up” the guild will be isolated again. Though I believe they can go to the support to get refund for it but still troublesome.

To topic, I think the T4 servers can get away by linking additional lowest 3 population servers, since anet says they can link as many together as they want and T4 isn’t packed.

Want to know why?

Here’s the short version in bullet points.

  • Being thrown into a new server without your say.
  • Wanting a small WvW community, but now having a Que size ranging to 40 on every map.
  • Being berated by other server members daily as if I chose to move.
  • Server pride = GONE

Here’s in more detail.
If I wanted to move to a larger tier server, I will fork over the money and gems to do so. I chose my server for the reasons that it was small in population, it had a good community, and it was a smaller tier. Smaller community meant friendlier players and no pressure to move up or maintain its tier. But when we moved up by our own means, it built server pride and an investment into the community. Smaller also meant no que time for maps, every map was free and meant every extra person was essential. Being on server that whole guilds dedicated to being toxic to others doesn’t help in the transition and when going into WvW means more infighting and actual fighting, WvW is no longer enjoyable.

You must really proud of you server to not indicate your server name in your signature. I must be really shameful of my server to do that

Anyway, I don’t really care about servers and if deleting all servers result in greater wvw experience, then so be it. For me, is all about gaming and not about servers. Servers community can always be reformed into a alliance community or whatever kind of community. I am not that egoistic to the point of using server pride as a reason to hinder the improvement of WvW.

Right now, at least for my server, the linking is nice but the ambiguous naming is not, I mean people can be sensitive about the names but all I really want to do is to play. I rather have a complete merge. We are not having queue issue anyway.

I don’t know about you but it seems like you are playing WvW to make yourselves feels important.

Personally, I think you’re barking up the wrong tree. I’m not specifically against any of the proposed changes, but they don’t address the core of the issue. “Night capping” is a direct result of uneven coverage – why not attempt to fix that instead of the secondary problems it creates?

Because you cant fix that. Its literally impossible. Balancing out its effects by changing the scoring mechanics is the only way.

The current imbalance issue is literally due to population difference caused by stacking. Some servers have way too many people due to stacking over 3 years. Some servers are empty, due to destacking over 3 years.

The answer has always been simple. Control the intake by determining the differences between servers which then efficiently prevent stacking, if the lowest server is too low, you close off all other servers that exceed that population disparity. Of course, you will see some stackers QQing over “Full” status but that is the price they have to pay for stacking.

That is what Anet did you know. It doesnt work, because players always find a way around it in order to play in their overstacked cliques. Your ideas only work if you assume players are a herd of brainless sheeps. It also assume a steady flow from high to low tiers, which just aint gonna happen.

Nope, they didn’t do that. What anet did is setting a “fixed max cap” while keeping a up-to-date current population. If the current population is below the “fixed max cap”, it is open. It is a simple programming, as simple as “if (curPop <= maxCap)”

What I am suggesting is not a “fixed max cap” but a “dynamic max cap”. This dynamic capping is built on disparity between selected server and the lowest server’s current population. Disparity calculation as simple as “popProportion = (lowServer / selServer) * 100” then using that to decide the cap of the selected server like “if (popProportion < 80%)”. To describe it, it simply means if the lowest server pop is less than 80% of the selected server pop, you close off the selected server. That is literally what it means by controlling the intake. Trying to game a dynamic pop is really hard, simply because you can’t empty the lowest server but gaming a “fixed” cap is easy because there is only one restriction.

However, for this to work, they need to fix the number of servers, anet should just merge it completely already.

Guild Hall Decoration Merchant 3

If you are a huge fan of deco-ing the guild hall, this half price is worth it since high quality deco can be expensive at long run.

With the current TP prizes, the materials required to unlock decorations merchant 3 costs about 410 gold. That means that you need to buy over 1500 basic decorations to make your gold back…………………..

So its gonna be a LOONGG run…..

I would recommend any guild since the april patch to only unlock decoration merchant 1 (as you need it for guild trader 4) and forget about the others until you are nearly done with upgrading for this reason. You could debate the T2 decorations merchant, but T3 with its 2k elder wood planks requirement (+300 sandpaper and 300 linseed oils) is just not worth it atm.

if you look at some of the high quality decos, it actually requires multiple basic decos. So, reaching 1.5k might not really be super long. Generally, most people are not huge fan of decoing the guild hall, most just wan to deco a small part of it.

People need to keep this is mind, the changes will continue to keep WvW score as coverage war. That did not change. What they did is merely reducing the overall victory score down by giving them a “fixed victory score”. So, if you win that time slice, it will add a “victory score” of let say 1000 to the total victory score. This will put all time slice into a equal contribution.

Your points are valid. What we don’t know is if you remove run-away score how does that impact the final score. If the concept is that controlling off time is worth 4 other periods of scoring and now reduces that to 2 is that worth it. Is that recoverable via other means like PPK then it might be balanced.

The idea here is to equalize the efforts and not discriminate the efforts. You might be thinking that servers might be winning the off hours time slice through ninja teams and worried that the ninja teams will result in inaccurate score judgement.

Realistically speaking, this victory system might actually result in bad glicko judgement and putting servers with low off population in a tier that has much higher off population.

Theoretically, it sounds really great on paper, but I’m not too optimistic about it in practice.

Now the main concern is this “additional change”, will they put a huge off hours population as default multiplier or will they put it as less multiplier. I am certain to say that if they put the huge off hours population as less mutiplier, anet must be prepared to lose your market shares. To begin with, a good number of asia players have already went to play TOS and if anet is willing to lose more market shares, go ahead.

Huge off population should not be punished for being huge if their opponents do not have the equal to fight off. To start with, it is anet’s incapability to prevent stacking that started it all. Players have the tendency to stack and anet should have implemented a dynamic system to prevent it but the years of negligence to WvW allow players to do whatever they want like emptying the bottom servers to stack at the top. Yes, people can blame those who stacked for causing all this but it is really all they can do to make them feel a bit better. Ultimately, the control lies in anet.

In my personal opinion scoring should be based on proportional wvw population during each tick. If each team has, say a minimum of ~30% of the total wvw population then each tick should be full, if one server has 50% and the other two have 25%, ticks should not be as high, as the one server has a clear advantage over the other two, and continue decreasing to say one server having =<90% of the wvw population during the tick.

This does a few things: it does not reward stacking a time zone where your opposing servers have no coverage because you will not be equally rewarded for that time zone as you would be if coverage was roughly even on all servers. It encourages splitting up stacked time zones and distributing evenly amongst their tier, because at that point they will be fully rewarded for their efforts.

The issue with night capping isn’t that it’s “off prime time hours” or even that it’s rewarding stacking a time zone, the issue is that it rewards exploiting unbalanced population levels. If all 3 servers have a total of 15 people in wvw each, they all have an equal chance to attack and defend objectives, and thus should be rewarded as well as during prime time, because there is no imbalance. If one server has 40 people in wvw and the other two servers have a combined 5 people, the stacked server should NOT be rewarded because they don’t have to put any effort into attacking or defending. It’s not about total population, it’s about population balance.

In my opinion the “controversial” proposal is obscene, because you are directly telling players that their contributions don’t matter if they don’t have full map blobs. Basing scoring off of proportional population levels keeps those players relevant AS LONG AS THEY ARE ON AN EVEN PLAYING FIELD WITH THEIR OPPONENTS.

I disagree. The 40-men people should be rewarded fully, likewise the 15 by all sides should be rewarded fully. Why? It is way better to push that 40-men server to a higher tier where they can find a similiar population than punishing them by keeping them there.

I always thought that the main issue of off-hours capping is because of a minor population ninja-ing everything and not because of huge population ktraining it.

Indeed, if they can’t balance it due to fear of backlash if use brutal methods, I at least hope that they will attempt to balance it over a period of time by controlling the intakes of players to the different servers. Right now, their intakes is hard cap, as shown during the days where T1 server is opened. I hope they change it to dynamic cap which will literally help balance the lower servers.

The servers itself too is a issue, the ambigous server status. Is anet gonna merge it or are they not gonna merge it, leaving it at that the status is harmful to the guilds in long run.

How does the multipliers affect servers in which ‘prime time’ for that server hosts the least amount of players during such time?

Specifically, we already know not all servers are stacked equal, so what may be considered a ‘busy’ time vs . ‘prime time’ does not feel equal in that regard.

From my personal perspective, this does seem to alienate anyone wanting to play WvW during non-prime hours and forces them to either a) play in the middle of the night during their time completely changing their life schedule for a game because they live in Europe or from elsewhere, or b) Forces them off to migrate to another server so they can be the most effective during the times that they desire to play at.

Also, what I didn’t see explained, if the score multiplier for skirmishes is determined by such busy times, what if the opposing force doesn’t have any players that wish to engage in that time? More specifically, how does that affect scoring on highly populated servers against servers with low turnouts during said prime times?

Just a curious cat here trying to find the scraps

I like that changes are rolling into WvW, but adjusting the PPT in this way isn’t going to make matches more fun. The PPT system both old and new encourages unbalanced play, PPT grinding and has little effect on a servers actual “fun”.

Create a scoring system that directly rewards players for contributing to general WvW play. Score a server on its captures, kills, defenses, escorts, etc. IMO you already have the beginning of this system in the game in the form of reward tracks.

+1 .. if you make prime time worth more.

1. People will try to only play during that prime time if they can and won’t try to play outside of the hours.
2. People will move to servers that have larger primetime population so they ‘win’ leading to stacking and lower pop in lower tier servers.
3. lower off hours population will lead to less people playing because pvdoor isn’t fun and leading to faster death of gw2.

In that case, they need to make a server pop system that will dynamically decide the population cap of the server instead of a hard cap to prevent stacking. For example, if a selected server and the literally lowest server population gap is too big, you close off that server.

I find it hilarious that so many are advocating ‘nerf’ to night capping… You do realize any slight towards ocx/sea/eu players will make some people play less? That is exactly what gw2 needs right now.. less players /s

Also please don’t do this “Last Stand” idea. The “Last Stand” makes one day matter too much in the match, every day should be worth the same.

I actually like the last stand idea. Whenever I go WvW on the last day, people will be like is ok, is the last day. But you know, I really want to win, I really want to beat people up, I really want to hold it (ego speaking), is more about now than the score. However, people really only cares about the score instead of like playing the game.

Population Balance Progress?

In the EU server, huge majority of the population is concentrated in the prime time, literally.

In the NA server, it is really more international, it is really a 24 hours coverage. USA itself span across multiple timezone from the East NA all the way to the pacific ocean, overlapping a small part of oceanic region. Canada itself also span across a multiple timezone. Likewise, there is also south america like brazil which again in a different timezone than north america. Also, EU players plays in NA. Finally, aus, new zealand, SEA, east asia come into picture. The off hours imbalance is really big problem in NA since great majority number of SEA/OCX love to stack on servers, how is anet gonna balance the off hours?

Classes’ damage has been increasing over the years, with the so-called balance and “shake up meta” approach. This is noticeable when you tried doing old contents, things that used to take so long to kill, now you kill them blazing fast. Anet has been using design methods that is not sustainable, gw2 is getting killed by its own power creep design.

It has been a few weeks since the world linking and there isn’t much news about it after that. Is that all there is to world linking? Is that all there is to population balance? Do all the full servers have to be stuck as full servers because of the world linking? While majority of the people are getting distracted by the revived wvw and neglecting all of this, the ambiguous status of the servers is gonna have a negative impact towards the population balance eventually.

Simple because WvW is GW2’s answer to open-world pvp. Though I would love that there is a option to place WvW armor instead of having to re-equip an armor everytime I go in.

You must be very new to WvW. DH is ranked higher than HOD previously, DH was rank 9.
Base on the previous rankings, all servers are paired by folding the papers, rank 1 with 24, rank 2 with 23.

Furthermore, DH and FC do have a lot of population, more than HOD and EBay but lack consistent presence. Maybe because your WvW guilds are “WvW” guild in names that only run few times per week?

Instead of mega server, I will prefer dynamic servers which is basically recreating X number of servers every X months to shuffle population by allowing them to choose a new server again and it is a friendly choice to casuals since no golds is involved with each shuffle.. Then, the people who are hardcore on the server community issue can convert to the alliance community to decide on the server to join on every recreation. Additionally, a dynamic cap to be implemented by analyzing the disparity of the selected server and lowest server’s population, closing the selected server when the disparity is too big. This will enforce servers to be in similar population level which then allow greater variety of matchup and better balance, at the same time prevent stacking situation.

What is there not to understand about PvX? It’s both pve and pvp guild, which most guilds are. But this one was more WvW than the rest. And on the wrong server. They never mention that when recruiting.

That is debatable. Rome isn’t built in a day. A player can play all 3 modes but not in a day, but one at a day.

It is important to understand why you play games. “Fun” is too vague. People play games for different reasons. Some play game because they are bored, to pass time, lonely, to dominate, to feed ego or etc…..

For myself, it is because games allow you to do things you can’t in real life. Exactly because of that, I play a wide range of games from RTS to city building to sim to fps to moba to mmorpg to sandbox building to survival to horror to rpg etc. In other words, I am literally a gamer who just like to game.

The thing is you don’t find it fun and you asking why it can be fun or how it can be fun, it suggest that the reason you play game is different from mine. For me, why is WvW fun? Simply because you can do things you can’t in real life. For others, it might be because of the excitement, the ego, the greater degree of interaction, the competition, play against people, etc. The reason why it is fun usually is simple reason and subjective to each individual.

Yes, as mentioned, the vendor provide the items at half the price the scribe provide. If you are a huge fan of deco-ing the guild hall, this half price is worth it since high quality deco can be expensive at long run.

Help me get into WvW, why should I bother?

Long time player here, been around since GW1, betas and release of GW2.

Played GW2 for a month on release, including WvW and even had a team of friends on TS but we really didn’t know what we were doing. In our experience, WvW was the worst part and disappointment of a already mediocre mmo game, everything felt really unfinished and in a bad state at the time. Was playing Guardian, felt completely useless. It was either zerg down something in a lag fest or get zerged down. Staff was the only weapon I could tickle my opponents with before I got mowed down, forget melee. Overall just horrible and completely pointless zerging.

I quit.

From your description, it is more of a lack of understanding of the gameplay and class capability than the problem of WvW.

Back after a year, joined a PvX guild of sorts that also did a lot of WvW but they were on a different server, and every time they went to do WvW I felt left out. And it’s not like the server was the problem, I wasn’t even interested in trying anyway, I just thought WvW sucked. So lots of other members got “promoted” in ranks after some time, and for being in a guild for a very long time there were newer players favored and promoted higher than me because they were part of that WvW club, and I hated this so much I left the guild after realizing this and my resentment towards WvW grew even stronger, so I went back to doing my dungeon speed clears, and without being able to find a guild to fit me this eventually depressed me enough to stop playing.

I quit again.

Got back recently again but I’m still soloing like before, and this isn’t really going anywhere. I would also like to get some more AP and there’s probably lots of easy AP to get in WvW after you exhaust pve and pvp APs but I just don’t know.

Trebbing Towers from Keeps.(this is also an issue in EB).
-Keeps should not be able to treb Towers.. However, Towers should be able to treb Keeps.

Why do you think that? Like really, I don’t get that logic at all.

I guess he believe tower should be a offensive position instead of a defensive position. I guess whoever build the tower thinking it should benefit the enemy should be fired from ministry of defense.

The merger or world link to me is simply a quick band aid to solve the lack of population for sustain gameplay. it doesn’t solve the population imbalance issue.

in many mmos i have played, all mmo that go by the idea of setting “full” status via a very simple minded “max number” always fail to balance population. these mmo developers are mistaking that FPS, MOBA, RTS etc. servers or matchup of max players concept is applicable to a MMO context. however, reality is it is never applicable.

in fps server, we have forced balancing like what you see in spvp but you can’t apply force balancing to servers, people will QQ about it. thus, it is exactly because you can’t apply force balancing to servers, the only way to “force” balance is to control the intake.

however, the current flaw is that the intake is base on the “max players” concept which is only applicable to games that has forced balancing. anet need to get rid of that max players context by implementing a dynamic max players which analyze the highest and lowest server population’s disparity, then close off the highest server if that disparity grows. this will effectively prevent people from stacking on server while emptying the lowest server, this will also punish multiple guilds from the highest server in their attempt to stack on another top ranked server since the “highest” populated server is subjective.

it will never be balanced through merger since population have been stacking on few particular servers over the years

to really balance something, u have to redistribute the population and enforce server full status dynamically by using multiple server’s (both highest and lowest) current population as reference. this will then truly create close-to-balanced population throughout all the servers

Just delete all the servers and recreate them, then we will really get to see if we do not have enough coverage to go around. While at it, create a algorithm that analyse historical records of the players and determine their wvw timing, then set a shared dynamic server cap base on actual wvw timing instead of simple max cap. A dynamic server cap where if the highest server and the lowest server disparity grow too much, it will close the highest server until the disparity reduced.

Currently, the population have been stacked at particular servers over the years. People are not gonna move if you tell them to move, why should they even pay to move anyway?
