Decrease damage but increase the amount that can be applied and the duration. Condi was always about attrition. The condi burst in ten seconds shouldn’t match the direct burst in the same amount of time. While you guys are at it, make consecrations a little more viable for solo play and give condi built guards access to more active blocks/dodges. Hell, give em a reflect. God knows thatd be really welcome.

Its bad because the map is too small and fights usually become a clusterkitten (true for all zerg related activities). In my opinion, we need more interesting maps with a few different spawn points. Let there be powerups that toss out random boons that are announced on the map to get people to converge on those points. Let tdm be a real tdm and not just wvw on a smaller scale.

I’m saying that its fine the way it is. If you make it so terror procs then all other on CC effects like damage and the like should proc for the duration of the CC.

Terror is not an on cc effect. It’s condition damage. It already works like this in PvE. There would be no reason to change anything else.

Terror procs when you fear someone. Fear is a CC. If terror procs when fear is used, it is an on CC effect.

Here’s the thing though. When you main a class and spend a majority of time on that one class, you tend to know every trait and every possible synergy for said traits. Discovering the next best setup is certainly no difficult task for a good player when they’re on their main. Assuming the winners of the PvP tournaments are actually good, they generally know their class well enough to find the meta on their own with no stress. These players tend to disclose their builds without a care because they’re confident in their own skill.

I’ll give you a little example. My guardian was my first character and is my main. I was fooling around for quite a bit before I discovered meta battle and through a series of trial and error (mind you, I was only 100 hours into the game) I whipped up a build that worked really nice. I played it for a bit and then was introduced to metabattle. I then realized that my build was, in fact, the norm that DPS guards ran. Does that stop me from beating other guards? No. Then it isn’t a problem. I also have a similar story from a guildy who whipped up a SBless condi ranger build and then discovered that it, too, already existed on metabattle.

Point is, there are far too many players and among these players, a lot of competent people who may very well all whip up the same build at the same time right after a patch drops, for instance, because the trait choices are so limited (in relation to other games, of course).

Yes stronghold will need more maps, but at the moment I would a refined gamemode above multiple maps. Another concern is that if they roll out maps too quickly they create a few skyhammers or maps that give classes too much of an advantage.

You’re not a genius and this game certainly isn’t that complicated when it comes to setting up traits. I’d understand if, for instance, we could’ve had craptons of ‘working’ trait combinations, like diablo, but we don’t. So relax and just outplay your opponent.

If I’m not mistaken, swapping atunements is the same as your regular weapon swapping. They have four attunements. Assuming no fresh air and the Ele is rotating at a decent pace, it isn’t hard to understand how he’d maintain so many stacks of poison.

Yea, for sure. Personally though, when I run this, as someone pointed out in game, I play it like a ranger. I usually pick a target being pressured and help clean them up. Chances are, if the person and my team mate are similar in skill level, the surprise 8 stacks of burn quickly shut the fight down. Since I’m not looking to fight more than one target alone, I find being able to toss out the stab really good, since it allows my team to reliably DPS with me tossing out some powerful support. I’m sure you’ve had those moments where a warrior buddy would be charging in to fight two necros and your stab at the right time gave him that extra oomph he needed to resist the fears and eventually rip him down.

Don’t get me wrong, permeating wrath is stupidly good and I’m not using it to put myself on some sort of moral high ground (I believe its the base of every burn guard related complaint), but I felt like tossing in that extra support (that IS what guardians are taken for at the end of the day, right :P?).

Nah. It’s a great trait simply for the fact that it opens up build diversity. It allows for a defensive option in place of other defensive options. Stick with removing the hits through evade thing and you’ll be golden.

I’ll give you a raw burn build if you want, although saiyan would probably give you a much better guide.

Radiance/zeal/virtues

In radiance, you take right hand strength, the torch burn trait and amplified wrath.

In zeal, you take fiery wrath, kindled zeal, and shattered aegis (would’ve been symbolic avenger if anet didn’t shut the trait down).

In virtues, you take master of consectrations, supreme justice, and the stability on courage (ermagherd not permeating wrath). You can take permeating wrath instead, but I find stability just too good to pass up.

As for rune choice, you can take any burn duration runes (Balthazar, fire, flame legion, etc) but I prefer traveler.

As for amulet choice, you can take rampager for an amazing amount of damage with 0 sustain. Personally though, celestial is looking too good. I generally don’t advise on carrion (although it provides really good condition damage and adequate power) because you can’t crit and crits are what makes power damage what it is.

As for sigils, I like air and earth. I prefer earth to geomancy because Im not forced to swap weapons for DPS before I absolutely want to.

As for weapon choices, I take scepter/torch and mace/focus. I really enjoy mace and focus because its just so good in regards to when you absolutely need to defend. Dropping down the mace symbol for a little extra healing, coupled with the blocks from mace and focus that proc with amplified wrath and supreme justice making it easier to proc VoJ more, you’re still capable of dealing damage while defending.

For utilities, I like shelter, purging flames, wall of reflection, sanctuary, and renewed focus. Now, I am adamant in my belief that judges intervention is an irreplaceable utility for guard, but I decided to go out in a limb and experiment.

Purging flames is rather obvious. More burn every time someone crosses the flame and 3 conditions cleansed every time you cross it (gotta wait for the buff to wear off though, iirc).

Wall of reflection is a real beauty. Dropping it in the middle of a team fight is hilariously debilitating for the enemy. Of course, if you’re not too fond of it, you can replace it with hallowed ground and then take permeating wrath. At this point, your virtues are pretty soft and you may as well take feel my wrath or the elite signet, which you’d be able to cast more or less uninterrupted inside your sanctuary, which would be amazing.

For your last utility, you’ve got sanctuary. Sanctuary is powerful enough to be an elite in my opinion (no surprise it has the same CD as renewed focus). Sanctuary is insanely sweet. If you’re coordinated enough, you can get the necro in your team to plant himself on the point and then you can support the kitten out of him.

The elites are fairly basic.

Your initial burst is usually smite>chains>torch4 x2 assuming the torch trait in radiance procs. This stacks around 8 burn dealing 2k+ burn. You can hit 11 easy if you throw in purging flames, but it has too many uses to just waste at the start of the fight.

You swap to mace/focus when you’re feeling pressured. Its about that simple. Cycle your blocks and feel free to waste your VoJ at the end of a fight or on a stomp for free might since a minor in radiance allows it to refresh on each kill.

I was probably the only visible dude that entire match. I spoke to theives on my team and told them to just watch me get bursted. I would immediately cycle a block and watch the thieves instagib the mesmers so many times and vice versa when one of their mesmers would magically roll out of cheiftans kitten and end the thieves. So many down states.

I had a similar experience a few days ago, except everyone was mesmer or thief and I was the only guard. Needless to say, I walked out with 13 kills and just as many deaths. I must admit though, the incredible pace was fun.

I’ll throw in guard cleanses. Assuming valor/virtues/x with smiters boon and absolute resolution:

Smite condition (1 condition) every 16 seconds.
Shelter (1 condition) every 30 seconds.
Contemplation of purity (unlimited) every 48 seconds.
Absolute resolution (3 conditions) every -need to check CD again-.

If the guard is running shouts instead with honor/virtues/x and trooper runes:

2 conditions cleansed per shout with 4 shouts (I’m not sure anyone uses any non-shelter heal).

I’ll double check the shout CDs and get back to you.

Questions from an eager newcomer

1. Fast guy (thief, warrior, Ele, or engi) deals with home. Rest rush mid. If you win the mid fight, then the enemy team is most likely on respawn, so feel free to send one dude to cap their home (your far). This does two things. You nab some points and force them to break one or two people off to force you off and recap. Constantly forcing them to break up is also what is better known as having the fight snowball. You basically regulate the momentum, which is how you win.

2. In the middle of a fight, you always have that idiot/bunker who tries to res. Down them. If they’re tanky and you can’t down, go for the stomp. If your team mate is low on hp, heal them up a bit and then go for the stomp. Generally, in team fights, you want to cleave if you can’t secure the stomp/res. Fortunately, as a necro, if there’s one thing you can shut down, its a target that isn’t in melee range.

3. Cap the point and then kitten the situation. Did the enemy just die? Did they die a minute ago? Was there no enemy there at all and they didn’t die either? All important questions.

If they just died, feel free to support other fights or give the map bonus a little attention. Contrary to what some “pros” say, nabbing the beast/smashing their door down (will, again, force them to split up) when nothing is going is a good thing. Just watch out for thieves, mesmers, etc.

If they died a half a minute to a minute ago and you just capped their home, expect them veeeery soon. Try stalling them off point by cutting them off at the most likely route they’ll take. Oh to add to that point, if you intend to cap a point or are going to defend against a person you can’t stall ALWAYS make sure to keep the point in your color, or if you’re severely pressured, neutral. Fighting on points is crucial.

If the enemy didn’t die and they aren’t there, look out for theives or mesmers. They’re veeery close by.

4. See above.

5. Target the squishies. Squishy usually = high dps, and the last thing your team needs is a free casting mesmer/ranger. Never bother with bunkers unless you’re a thief or mesmer, as bunkers are designed to take loads of damage. Necros are prime targets for lack of escapes and being a scholar, meaning low armor (usually).

6. I like all the maps equally, cept for troll hammer and spirit watch. The treb at kyhlo is a little annoying, but the trebber is usually a bad, so its free points all around.

Zeal is about burns and symbols. Guess what smite procs a lot of? You guessed it. VoJ burns. What with the way things are currently, I understand why they can’t make smite a symbol without reworking the entire tree to balance the kitten out. If you grab that trait + strength sigil, you can actually drum up some rather decent might on a good duration too. RHS and the radiance minor traits ensure that you enjoy a solid 25% boost to crit rate, which makes cele very appetizing and rampager just over the top in terms of crit.

Healing power is poop. To be honest, I don’t know why it exists. You either have it do nothing like it does now or have its power scale like…power and then have immortal bunker guards and watch cele eles solo entire zergs. For tankiness, you want, like others have suggested, PVT. My problem is that even with the vitality and toughness, the new patch would see to it that those stats are useless. If you’re a primarily pve player, then do whatever since none of it actually matters (speed clear heroes will stress zerk).

Burn guard uses two weapon skills while your average power guard uses three to four plus a utility.

I’m somewhat aware of the specifics, but like most players who’ve played for a while, I KNOW what’s going on, I just can’t place a label to it (although I can if you give me a moment to read the skill names).

Power thief’s biggest damage comes from its autos? I’m sorry, I was under the assumption that a majority of their damage came from backstabbing/spamming stealth. I know they chain some CCs and auto, but this is a candle in a firestorm (I think you’re mistaking air/fire procs for their autos which, surprisingly, aren’t that powerful).

If you haven’t understood by now, I’m complaining that they drop an auto+another weapon skill or two and then run in circles while I die while there’s literally one route I can take in regards to counterplay.

Burn guard literally needs to press three buttons and he wins if you don’t cleanse. Condi mesmer just stacks condis and kittens around in stealth while throwing in the occasional teleport. Condi thief literally has a majority of his bleed come from 1, while pressing 3 when anything gets too close to deal, you guessed it, EVEN MORE condition damage. Seriously. How on earth can you compare this to direct, what with the ridiculous disparity in the types of counters to each type of damage?

You are for active play, and I can understand that. But as it stands: Condition damage is as much or less active as power damage.

Except you land a condi skill, burst, rotation, proc and then run around while the damage is being dealt. People hear passive and assume I mean that your very presence starts doing damage (does in some cases).

The main component of an auto is power based damage. Every auto does power based damage. Not every auto does condition damage. I’m not being selective, I’m just not interested in listing out

If you’d like to have a thorough discussion, we can, but as you’ve stated, this topic was thoroughly covered several times before.

As for the focus skills, the first blind is active and the rest is bullkitten. I don’t think that its fair that I can activate a skill and just run in circles while certain specs (see axe or hammer warrior and necro especially) basically do 0 damage. While lich is overpowered in terms of the damage it deals, it isn’t fair that one guardian can literally face tank it with absolute ease.

Same applies to the focus block. The first block is good and well, but the rest is kitten and the damage burst is even more so. I have no idea how times I would purposely activate the shield before the burst (as I’m sure many guardians do) and basically insta gib my target or drop nearly 15k damage and have them run in circles trying to survive.

I will admit that I am a bit biased to power damage, but I agree that the insta gibbing of power builds and the passive bullkitten of condition builds needs to go. Basically, a complete overhaul. Its fine if you don’t agree with me since its your opinion vs mine, but I’m certain I can find hordes of players that will support my opinion vs yours.

So? What has the one point to do with the other one? Are you claiming condition damage happens passively?

I agree with your points on RNG. But so far your argument wasn’t conclusive concerning condition damage.

Many condition applications are on autos or, yes, passive, if you would believe it. Zealots flame is a great example. Mesmer torch unstealth is another. You lay the condition and assuming its ONLY counter in the game isnt used, you forget about it and let it do its work. Sounds passive to me.
