May seem out of topic but the only issue here is Thief having way basically nitch traits which shouldnt even exist. Every single thief has these four traits below as a baseline to ANY build they make. These traits should be reworked and then address other issues with thief. Even if anet feels these traits should simply be baseline to Steal it is odd that you are forced to do Trickery for almost every Thief build you do… and pretty outright crazy. I think these traits actually what really make thieves perform the way they do and its time something is truly done. If they cannot adapt to these traits being taken out then thief is being carried anyway by them.

Again may seem odd I bring up balance during a sigil topic but if Sleight of Hand didn’t exist.. this would be a little issue. Heck even Headshot is a skill on pistol is an issue only because Bountiful Theft exists. Thieves Offhand Pistol needs both skills being taken out (spammable stealth and a spammable daze) Pistol offhand being so good keeps thief from evolving to other build options.

But yeah Sigil of Absorption should have a little cooldown of 1 second or so to contain its powers for sure.

Mug/Thrill of Crime/Bountiful Theft/Sleight of Hand

You just want Thieves gutted I see, Thieves are designed around Stealth it is baked into the class at the conceptual level, it’s the only class with a entire traitline dedicated to it that requires reliable access to it and the only class with mechanics based on Stealth. And Trickery is mainly taken for the Preparedness trait since Anet balances all Initiative costs around 15 and not the baseline 12. If they made Preparedness baseline almost all Thieves would drop Trickery all together.

Also majority of classes can Spam boons, the only one or capable of spamming boons so thematically they steal the boons they need with their mechanic called Steal if traited…. because if there weren’t and boom Steal or strip traits boom Spam classes would be the overlords like they were years ago after they reduced all boom strip.

i like the idea of the sigil

the PI with no cd is the problem not the sigil itself. pi should have 5 sec cd.

the sigil has 3 sec cd which is ok.

the only class who can perma cc you is thief with spamm, memser with 3 illusion daze. so 3 sec cd on the sigil is fine. the problem is PI spamm.

Perma CC? They can Spam 3 HS in a row because Initiative is a CD, a 20 sec CD Steal and a 40 sec CD Basi Venom not much for Perma Cc, the Headshots can be negated by any stability or projectile hate, the Steal is limited by its CD and same with Basi Venom, and if Basi Venom is applied when they engage with Steal or HS it only counts as one Cc and interrupt.

And most other classes have 3-4+ ccs they can chain in a row as well

But the on interrupt sigils are stupid to added into pvp that is agreeable, thankfully they didn’t add the life Steal sigils which would be a disaster

the shortbow changes are INCREDIBLY good, especially for condi thief. Choking gas is insane. And there are several high level condi thieves in the game; just because it isn’t popular doesn’t mean it isn’t good.

Several? I have only ran into one High level Condi thief at least in PvP and I ran into her last night when we were both playing similar builds to test out the changes in Unranked, I have found out if you aren’t careful with the use of Choking Gas you can trap yourself with very few defenses, I ended up running D/P as my secondary set and SB as primary the D/P was there just for repositioning and to move undetected most fights used SB and kiting techniques

Was that on the table?

OP wants traitline about mobility not have anything to do with mobility.

OP wants an icd on an ability that is another, among many, overly bloated abilities for thief. Spamming dodges to break immobilizes when thieves multiple means to do so is unhealthy for balanced gameplay.

OP doesn’t realize the last 2 balance patches have seen nerfs to Thieves Evades and Endurance regeneration.

It’s funny the complaints are coming from someone that plays a class with on demand access to Resistance Spam which negates all movement impairing effects.

Illusionary Reversion nerf?

Yea, thief will still shut down power mesmer hard. They got their evade spam nerfed again in PvP, but put in decent buffs to thief’s ability to apply poison and to a weapon every thief is already always running (seriously, that’s a really strange weapon to buff on thief. I get that they wanted it to be used for more than mobility, but at the same time, its already so kitten good that every single build runs it, so why not do something else instead of buffing it).

Bright side is that potent poison now might compete with improvisation, which means thieves might only be able to use consume plasma once per steal.

It wasn’t used because it was good, it was used solely for mobility, when a Weapon has one skill 90% being he only skill used besides the rare chance needing to cleave a down with poison , the weapon was so under performing, now it has a decent buff to it that can make it be useful besides just to run away.

Difference being the open world HP’s are needed to unlock elite specializations which can be directly used in WvW whereas legendary weapons are more towards optional content.

News flash: Elite specs are not required content.

Also, you’re conveniently ignoring the fact that if a person plays WvW as much as some claim to here, they are going to have more than enough proof of heroics to allow them to just walk into any zone in Central Tyria, double click for a few seconds, and instantly have every HP in the zone done. No need to take part in any of the temple events or even mess around trying to find a map where the temples are open.
Other than the renown hearts, Hero Points are the second most tedious part of world completion, and dedicated WvW players get to just click their way through it.

A lot of useful builds require them and they’re a part of active playing whereas legendary weapons are primarily for their visuals. You’re also forgetting the time it takes to unlock the necessary HP’s that could be spent playing WvW. This is different from the gift of battle that was created around WvW participation.

If you’re worried about how long it takes to double click your mouse 189times (you don’t have to be in each zone to unlock the various Central Tyrian hero points), you must dread having to sort through loot.
Just because a build that someone else recommends an elite spec, doesn’t mean it’s required. Currently two of the top rated WvW builds on MetaBattle are vanilla Guardian.

Oh wow Two builds on one class out of 9 classes….. and again Legendaries are luxury convenience item nothing more. And WvW already had access to HPs before HoT was even a thought…. so……..

Yep, rare exotic/ascended weapons and armor are optional as well. Not sure how far you’d get without them.

The difference is of course, what is lost when not having these things; ie not having armor, specializations against legendarily.

Oh no Ascended has the same stat totals as Legendaries you don’t need them for anything

That’s my point.

And hero points are more mandatory than a legendary that doesn’t provide any advantage that’s my point

Try reading comprehension 101. Two of the best rated builds are vanilla. There are others that are simply rated “great” and such that are also vanilla.

The point still stands. Even one top rated vanilla build is proof that elite specs are not required. The only reason you refuse to understand that is it doesn’t fit into your desire for cheap easy kills.

Nope they are only taken due to Zerg group play nothing more they are there for bunkering in zergs for group support for actual competitive gameplay innsolo Roaming and such where Player numbers are the main factor Elite specs are almost mandatory.

And again Legendaries aren’t required you play no stat advantages what so ever, sorry you want everything given to you for no effort. And WvW HPs take a lot longer to get vs PvE HPs known fact really but hey you wouldn’t know that, just shows WvW players put in more effort over all if they want something

The revenant have 15 possible utility skills, every other class have 24 +racial skills.
and yes, that gives the revenant a total of 10 combinations of utility skill sets… while every other class have 72 combination options.

The idea that the other classes have less options for utility skills is plain rubish. The elementalist have weapons that can be summoned, each of those are worth 5 more skills. the engineer can switch freely between it’s weapon kits, the warrior have it’s banners etc etc etc. there’s other classes that add additional skills. having 2 sets of utility skills is just not cool enough to weight up for no versatility and 9+ less skills than everyone else.

Again revs have 20 possible utilities 5 legends * 4 utilities each, the OP specified Utility skills, then there is the fact that revs get 8 Utilities, 2 Heals and 2 Elites at all times so for effective skills in combat they have more skills overall especially when looking at Meta builds and usages…….. and on top of that Revs have weapon swaps(which Eles and Engies don’t have) so when most other classes at any given time every other class has 6 less skills

You do not have to PvP to get a GoB, though doing so can potentially increase the speed at which you make progress.

So, there are places where no other players can attack me, but I can still earn the GoB? How can I find these places? Or, is it just that the risks of getting attacked are lower?

You can completely cut out WvW from getting GoB just do the daily big spender, it will just take well over 100 days if lucky.

And you can do your best to avoid players and slap yaks and sentries near owned keeps and towers repeat you don’t have to engage anyone in combat and it’s extremely easy to avoid combat altogether while in regular WvW maps

Thief
The Daredevil staff functions as a fairly strong AoE weapon, but core thief lacks good ways to deal with large groups, so in this update we’re tuning up the short bow to be a stronger ranged AoE weapon. Additionally, we’re making a small change to Unload to make it more effective as a damage tool when you can ensure that your target will stand still. Finally, we’re also looking at updates to the Deadly Arts line that emphasize poison use to help establish more defined ways to play based on the traits that you select.
Pulmonary Impact: The damage of this effect has been reduced by 15% in PvP only.
Channeled Vigor: Endurance per tick has been reduced from 20 to 15 in PvP only.
Endurance Thief: Endurance gained has been reduced from 50 to 25 in PvP only.
Palm Strike: This skill now applies two instances of Pulmonary Impact on a successful hit.
Vault: The initiative of this skill has been increased from 5 to 6 in PvP only.
Bound (PvP Only): The damage of this ability has been reduced by 24% in PvP only.
Body Shot: This skill has been unsplit and now applies immobilize for 1.5 seconds in all game modes.
Unload: This skill now refunds 2 initiative if all attacks hit.
Trick Shot: Increased number of bounces to 3. Now deals 25% increased damage to poisoned foes.
Detonate Cluster: Increased number of bombs to 4.
Choking Gas: Increased damage by 200%. This skill now briefly dazes foes with 5 or more stacks of poison every pulse. The same foe cannot be dazed more than once every second.
Potent Poison: In addition to its previous effect, this trait now increases the number of stacks of poison applied by other Deadly Arts traits.
Panic Strike: In addition to its previous effect, this trait now causes you to apply 1 stack of poison for 4 seconds to foes that you immobilize.
Panic Strike: Immobilize duration has been reduced from 2.5 seconds to 1.5 seconds in PvP only.
Trapper’s Respite: Fixed a bug that caused this skill to display an incorrect poison duration.

“Consumables:”
The line of foods that provided bonus damage while moving has been dominating consumable use for all power-based builds. In addition to being significantly more powerful than other foods designed to boost power damage, the “wiggle” strategy to maintain uptime on its effect has a negative impact on the health of the game (and its players). For these reasons, food that increases outgoing damage while moving has had its efficacy reduced by 50%. This affects the following items and their respective feasts:
Bowl of Seaweed Salad (10% -> 5%)
Bowl of Winterberry Seaweed Salad (10% -> 5%)
Swiftly Scrambled Eggs (10% -> 5%)
Bowl of Asparagus and Sage Salad (8% -> 4%)
Can of Asparagus and Sage Salad (8% -> 4%)
Experimental Remnant (8% -> 4%)
Cabbage and Chickpea Salad (6% -> 3%)
Bowl of Coleslaw (4% -> 2%)

The Gift of Battle

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Sly.9518

I hate the idea of pandering to the entitled, but if Anet’s hand was forced the best way to sort it would be to make it so you can purchase a Gift of Battle with a Gift of Exploration and vice versa.

ANet already allowed ducking HoT content for elite specs to the WvW crowd that’s phobic of PvE. And it’s honestly a move I applauded then, and still do now. Because it created options; rewards.
WvW folks could get their elite specs purely by staying in WvW, and frustrated PvE folks could sneak into WvW for a little while and finish a random (but probably a harder) hero challenge for their advancement. (…to think of it, I think Mushroom Queen in Tangled Depths was designed specifically for this. -_-)
But anyway, I’d be all for alternate methods of acquisition. Heck, I recall some players saying they have a fat stack of Gifts of Exploration because they can’t find anything they want to do with them. Maybe being able to convert one over to a GoB might get them into making a legendary and embrace a long-term goal.

But again this could hurt gw2. Given we don’t know how many pve only players have gotten into WvW because they had to get their gift of battle.

Forcing players into it just builds resentment. There may be some who learned to enjoy it, and that’s cool, but is populating a suffering game mode worth driving other players away? There are ways spur WvW activity without tricks or blackmail.

Elite Specs aren’t items, you comparison is highly lacking, since players have always been able to acquire Hero points in WvW, and since WvW is directly impacts WvW players and performance while Legendary items don’t directly impact either of those things, again Legendaries are a convenience luxury skinnnothing more.

Wow the entitlement is strong still,

I used to think like you, back before I took the time to analyze it logically. Frankly, I’m more in agreement with the OP now, but not for the same reasons.
Consider the following…

  • GW2 is NOT one of the few prime MMOs out there. Quite frankly there are dozens out there, and not all on PC, but console, and mobile.
  • The design of legendaries while intended to encourage people to go outside their realm of comfort and try new things, this really is NOT a design of carrot, this is a design of stick.
  • Experiences of WvW, PvP, and PvE are all different, of which person abilities, play times, server, guild relations, play skill, and their computer’s ability to play the game all factor in. Essentially, every user’s experience will be different and all points are valid.

When I take into consideration all of this, what I determine is that the design is flawed.
Why do we play games? Generically, to have fun.

  • When we are forced outside the “realm of fun” for us, that reduces fun and also can put a “bad taste in our mouth” about the game that is hard to get rid of. (please note I said can. experience is different per user.)
  • Once the bad taste is present, it will pollute further “fun” in a game.
  • once a game is no longer fun, people leave looking for new fun.

People who leave generate no monies for the game. Therefore you want to remove as much “bad taste” from the game as possible to keep people playing, but enough challenge to make it feel rewarding. Aka you’ve got to work the addiction factor.
The hard part about this is that there is also a need to cater to the people sticking around also. So it is a hard line to make happen.
This is where game design runs afoul of beancounter profits. No profits means no job.

And while the Gift of Battle is the focus of the OP, I would imagine it is the Gift of Exploration for the PvP/WvW folks.

Is there a better way over all to design it? To make it fun and keeping to the original intention? Frankly I don’t see it.
Is there a way it could be augmented? Sure. (pvp/wvw) A special one time track could be done. (pve) A special one time quest set that uses a lot of spirit shards perhaps? There are means to make that first legendary more in reach for the AVERAGE player without taking away from the whole.

Last note, I see so many people say it only takes 4-6 hours to get a GoB… Remember, what I stated in my 3rd bullet. User experience varies. It took me about a month to get my GoB via reward track playing WvW every day about an hour each day due to my time and server, and that included Edge. It sucks to be me and that is why I don’t go after legendaries much at all.

Not everything in this game is designed for everyone’s tastes, but everything in game is achievable by everyone, it’s called target audiences, the Legendary Weapons design has been from the inception to require multiple game modes to complete one, and they are the carrot for the players dedicated enough to actually do what is necessary to acquire them, doesn’t seem like to hard of a concept, do X tasks for Y reward, those tasks are laid bare in the gameplay, if someone doesn’t do the task no reward pretty simple.

And again it only takes 4.3-8.5 cumulative hrs total with max participation (takes 5-10 minutes to build) to get GoB, can’t argue this fact. This is not dependent on time of day or population size since neither factor in how many yaks you can slap or how much siege you can build or how many sentries you can kill, so quit trying to use that excuse, you don’t have to take Towers or keeps or anything else, and as stated above you don’t even have to WvW but it will take well over 100 days to get enough big spender dailies to get a GoB without actually playing WvW.

Find a way to kill a raid boss with this, video it and post it on Reddit.

It’ll be nerfed within two weeks

I give it a week, can’t have anything showing exploits in PvE, but if it’s pvp or WvW it takes months if ever.

Remove Stealth attack nerf!!

That only works in 1v1. It does not work in pvp for example as target might gain random block from the guardian for example the very same moment you hit backstab.

Wasn’t that one of the reasons they introduced it? To prevent mindless spam through 1 hit defences like aegis or blind.

By that logic they should have removed passives and instant aoe then. Not to mention: if you ask someone how do you deal with aegis and blinds, every single person will tell you to attack. I would agree that CD may have make sense if stealth attacks had no ini costs and didn’t require being behind the target (in case of bs, sword etc.), in melee and stealth but as it is right now, those spells already have quite a list of requirements bound to rather long CDs and/or hefty amount resources (that hardly any other spell has) that extra CD on top of it with side effect of locking thief from the AA is just absurd and just plain class discrimination as no other class has been punished as hard in design.

Look at all thief builds, what is the most prominent thing about them (beside condi d/d) ? Main damage comes from AA. Maybe some IP here and there but it is mainly AA and there is good reason for it – it is not worth using anything else since everything has been getting nerfed over and over and over again to the point where AA is only choice. If you diminish the class to running away from enemies and using AA 90% of the time, sry, but you did rather poor job as designer.

So why did they introduce it? Also no need to get shirty. I was asking a legit question.

It won’t let me quote directly due to the thread being locked, but here you go:

Robert Gee:
“Unlike other thief weapons skills, stealth attacks do not have an initiative cost. Previously they did not have a cooldown as well. Guild Wars 2 frequently uses recharge as a cost to casting a skill as a result, these skills were essentially “free”. With the previous version of stealth attacks, you could spam your stealth attack until it hit at essentially no cost while your opponent had to use resources like aegis, blind or evasion to avoid it.
tldr; We added the recharge to stealth attacks to insure that there would be appropriate cost to failing to hit with a stealth attack. We’re pretty happy with this change and aren’t planning to revert it.”

Which I find funny that he says Stealth Attacks don’t have a cost, when either 6-9 initiative has to be expended or a long CD has to be expended for the Thief to even gain access to Stealth Attacks, would would mean they do have an indirect cost, in a surprisingly short window aka 3 secs. Since we all know Thieves don’t gain Stealth for free.

And let it be noted it took months (July 2016 is the day it was added, 22 February 2017 was the given response to why) before we got this justification for the nerf, before it was just silence as per usual.

The Gift of Battle

Well that’s fine and all I suppose. I’m fairly close to completing it after several days of attempts and genuinely boring gameplay. But as to your point about people having to spend 16-20 hours for the gift of exploration. I get it. But no one is saying that one makes the other okay. Just because we don’t want to do WvW, doesn’t suddenly negate the complaints of the people who primarily enjoy wvw.

One person doesn’t like doing open world, the other doesn’t like wvw. If that’s your argument for why nothing should be changed because the WvW players have it tougher that doesn’t make sense. You should be looking to change THAT part of the game as well. Not coming into other threads and lauding your complaints onto us because you have it harder. Either way, I’m tired. Maybe I’ll come back later.

And let’s not forget that ANet caved to the whinging about Hero Points for elite specs, allowing easy access to them via WvW.

Meanwhile, I’m finding the time estimates being floated around to be utter bunk. 8 hours of, as noted above, genuinely boring gameplay? I’ve already invested quite a bit into this allegedly “AFK gameplay” and the pace of rewards is pathetic. I honestly can’t comprehend how WvW is supposed to feel satisfying.

So we want to get gift of battle by doing more PvE? Hmm… hmmmmmm…

You get 1 token daily by completing the Obsidian Sanctum puzzle and need 250 tokens to buy the gift.

Sounds better than 6 hours or so of casual WvW, right?

Wrong gift.
You: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Memory_of_Battle -> https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Gift_of_War
Thread: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Gift_of_Battle

There are two different Gifts that require WvW, which is part of the general complaint.
PvP has only one requirement:
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Shard_of_Glory -> https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Gift_of_Glory

I don’t have to sully anyone else’s PvP experience to buy off my “participation” there. So why is it doubly required for WvW?

You can buy memories of battle for dirt cheap no WvW needed for that gift all that you need to do is 4-8.5 hrs of slapping yaks and boom you have your gift of Battle pretty simple, the facts are just that facts you can get the Gift of battle in 4-8.5hrs unless you aren’t maintaining the participation and in WvW you aren’t sullying anyone experience, he’ll the majority of people won’t even notice you in the gamemode.

And side note as stated above you “can” do well over 80 days worth of Big spender and only have to pop into WvW to see if it’s the random daily so expect it to take well over 100 days to get enough daily potions to level the reward track and never have to bother playing the game as intended.
