Same goes for there being no safe place on walls to place ACs, its pretty stupid imo, a defended tower should not be able to have its defences taken out so easily. If people are defending, unless you have vastly superior numbers, you should have to move somewhere else.

With well placed superior ACs how exactly is this not current WvW?

Sometimes I wonder if people WvW the same WvW I do… Going close up against a defended tower with 2+ ACs you cant hit is impossible without the 10+ people required to build enough siege fast. Going up against a fortified keep with full supplies? Hahaha… 20+ people at least and you better hope there is near zero defense because the slightest effort and you will fail. In both cases you can completely ignore people on walls anyway and do a ranged assualt, but again that require a ton of people because you need to build sheild generators to block the inevitable counter siege. Taking on a fortified keep with trebs and sheild gens require like 40+ people unless you want to be there the entire day.

So uhm… what is “vastly superior numbers”? What is your requirement on the relative strength of defenders and attackers to be allowed to take a tower or keep? I’d really like to know. Because I sure cant keep people off walls when trying to attack a tower with 5 people. They disable the siege and then they AC the cata/ram to death. Or a single ele just meteor storm it. And if that single ele fails and was stupid enough to die to AoE… didnt we outnumber him 5:1?

AC defence only works if the AC’s are manned before the offending zerg starts to attack. Often times when a structure is attacked, they’re empty for a solid minute or two until defenders start to trickle in and attempt to use defensive siege but are quickly AOE’d to death.

For the sake of example; If there are 3 superior AC’s aimed at the side wall of Klovan, all of them manned prior to a zerg arriving, that zerg won’t be able to get close to the tower. They’ll probably need to build catapults way out in the swamp. How often are people inside the tower, on the defensive siege and prepared for an attack though, realistically? Very rarely.

Most times it goes more like this; A zerg comes to hit Klovan, they AOE the kitten out of the walls, kill all the siege, defenders come in and look for siege to use but it’s all been destroyed. They run around on the walls panicking for a few minutes trying to avoid all the AOE’s or trying to build more siege which immediately gets killed.

If anything, I don’t know what WvW you’re doing… Because although yes, defensive siege can be a massive pain, again, it’s only if defenders are prepared before the attack begins. And if that’s not the case for you then your server is just bad at killing siege before they start to build their own. Probably dropping rams before killing cannons and oil then scratching their heads asking how their brilliant plan was foiled.

Make WvW about Guilds, no more Xfer

No thanks.

I realize that this is Guild Wars and all, but many of us aren’t in guilds or aren’t in WvW active guilds.

I agree that the linking failed and I agree that servers need to be balanced better but this isn’t strictly a GW2 problem. It happens in other games with similar systems and much of the fault is placed squarely on us, the players, for manipulating that system.

I can’t think of a proper solution but I do know that making it guild based wouldn’t be the right answer.

I agree. And I made a video/thread not too long ago showing what standing on the wall of a structure that’s being attacked is like.

You can view that thread and video here

As I’d stated in that thread multiple times and as I will say here, too; It was not meant as anything other than to show that it’s a death trap to stand on a wall while it’s being attacked. I wasn’t trying to stop the blob, I wasn’t trying to show tricks, nothing. Just showing that walls are ridiculously dangerous while a zerg is attacking. Like putting your hand over a stove while it’s on and saying “hot” it should be simple enough information for people to understand.

I still wish they would double the thickness of walls, personally. Not increase the health or the height, just widen them so it’s more difficult for AOE’s to cover the entire walls. You would still be able to kill AC’s and such on the walls it would just a) be more difficult and b) probably require counter siege like an open field AC or Ballista. But at least it would allow for defenders to stand on the walls without immediately getting blown up or pulled off.

Pet(s)

in PvP

SpellOfIniquity.1780

Like I said, the “high pet damage” isn’t actually from the base stats of the smokescale or bristleback, the culprit is the “we heal as one” skill. Base smokescale burst is only ~3.5k most of the time, the feline and bird pets easily hit as much if their attacks landed properly.

Once “we heal as one” is nerfed, a bunker/support druid would never be able to kill in a 1v1 situation with a pet that only bursted 3.5k every 15-20s or so, thus solving the “bunker shouldn’t be able to burst so much” problem.

Diversity comes from being able to mix different pets for their utility and stats that are independent from gear stats.

The bottom line is that I think nerfing rangers ability to stack might on pets is a much better option than scaling pet stats through gear.

This is correct.

Although certain pets can deal relatively high damage, none of them will be doing enough to be a major threat without enough Might stacks. “Strength Of The Pack!” + “We Heal As One!” is a very easy way to stack 25 Might on you and your pet and can cause certain pet attacks to deal massive damage.

I know that a lot of players hate pets but fact is fact; nearly all of the Ranger pets do pitiful damage unless Signet/Might buffed. Smokescale and Bristleback have been nerfed repeatedly and pets are the Rangers unique mechanic. Either Ranger’s are going to need to start having their own damage buffed or pets are going to need to stop being nerfed. Ranger does very little damage even in full zerk gear because a large percentage of their damage comes from the pet, remember.

While I do agree that it can be ridiculous that they can deal high damage while the Ranger themselves remain bunker, I don’t think the solution is to make pets scale with the Rangers stats nor do I think the solution is to nerf pet damage (which is what most people prefer to suggest). WHaO and SotP may need to be addressed and adjusted some how but pets have been nerfed more than enough and only recently received buffs instead of nerfs, nearly all to pets that are rarely used anyway like Moas and Porcines.

Help me love my ranger?

I’m also trying to find a reason to play my ranger… How about weapons? What weapons/weapon combos make you guys enjoy ranger?

Since it varies from person to person, I can’t suggest a weapon that you’ll like. I can tell you that Sword/Dagger is very exciting to play or that Greatsword is one of the few weapons in the game where every skill is extremely useful instead of just 2 or 3 of them.

Personally I enjoy Sword, Greatsword, Longbow and Staff although I mostly use the standard Longbow + Greatsword set up since I’m primarily a WvW’r. Greatsword offers me a ton of utility and saves my behind many, many times a day with Quick Draw + Swoop x2 or Counterattack x2 (love those 6k+ Counterattacks so much <3). And Longbow, although simple, is a very strong weapon. I’m happy that they buffed it way back when they did because it’s truly enjoyable and rewarding when used properly.

Still, if Ranger isn’t for you, it isn’t for you. Maybe you’ll try it again later and it’ll click with you or maybe you just plain don’t like it. Personally I try not to force myself to like any of the classes, I just try them and if I like them I like them if I don’t I don’t. Maybe I give them another try later on and change my mind. It happened with Engineer, I used to be awful with it and I disliked it. Then, over a year later, I tried it again and it fit me like a glove. Everyone says it’s hard but I found it extremely easy.

Actually you look the person running an “I win build” acro/dd/trickery has to the most easy faceroll thief build ever, and you’ur running bound to lol. I dunno how people can claim them self’s to be skillfull opements when they are running trash like this. Btw what build was he running?

Everything is OP in some way or another, now. Skill having anything to do with victory disappeared when HoT dropped.

You can still find plenty of good players but no matter how good they are, many of them die repeatedly to specific builds because they have to massively outplay mechanics instead of the players themselves. Eg. heaps of passives.

You can be stubborn like me and continue to play builds without the elite specs, telling yourself it makes you a better player when it really doesn’t. Or you can pick up the latest steamroller and join the party, no skill required.

Pets can take some warming up to but once you do, you’ll love them. Mine has saved my life countless times and although they can be difficult to control, they absolutely are a major asset to many of your defences and offences if used correctly.

What I love about the profession most is the grace. It’s the only profession that feels like it has a real finesse to it in nearly every weapon. It’s very satisfying to me how many of the Rangers skills have a smooth delivery like; Ancestral Grace, Swoop, Greatsword AA’s, Quick Shot, Serpent’s Strike and Dart.

Besides that, I also very much love pets. They’re my companions and although stupid at times, I enjoy managing them and working with them. I especially enjoy moments like when my Wolf knockdown interrupts a Thief in the middle of his #5 -> #2 combo or when someone is about to heal. Or when I’ve downed and someone is trying to stomp me but my pet wails on them enough to down them as well before they can stomp. Things like that just make me grin.

I always go for the ranged archetype in any game I play. Bows or sniper rifles are my thing. I like to be stealthy and observant, scouting out movements, studying enemy strategies, planning ambush attacks, etc. I’m a hunter (not talking WoW) at heart. I like to track my prey and work with my environment and personally, I think GW2 did a good job with that nature-loving hunter feel.

Any tips?

SpellOfIniquity.1780

Follow commander’s and learn from them. Consider their positive decisions and their mistakes. Try to make decisions in your head while following them (don’t backseat drive, keep these decisions to yourself) and see if those decisions would have been good or fatal.

Eg. Commander is about to make a push, you think if you were commanding you would flank. Watch the events unfold, does your zerg wipe, would it have been better if you flanked, or did the commander make the right decision and yours was the wrong one?

You won’t always make the right decisions, no one’s perfect, but it’s important to learn how to visualize the field. What things could cause what outcomes. Mentally train yourself along side other commanders learning from their actual mistakes and learning from your hypothetical mistakes.

After that, the next important step is Teamspeak. Learning what commands to give and when. Waters, stability, etc.

And beyond that, staying alive. As soon as a commander goes down, the zerg is going to fall apart 90% of the time. If you’re still inexperienced with your decisions, at least you can stay alive so that your zerg stays together. If you can’t hold the frontline, you can’t make commands, you can’t drive your zerg. So first and foremost, you need to learn to survive before you learn anything else.

EOTM is an entirely different beast because there’s no Teamspeak and little co-ordination. But with a bit of patience, you can train your zerg to have some discipline. It’s a good training ground to see how effective you are as a commander.

Some tips for getting a zerg to co-operate with you:

  • Have a positive attitude. Don’t put people down during a wipe but don’t pretend it didn’t happen.
  • Be relaxed, let people feel comfortable around you. If they trust you, they’ll risk their lives with you.
  • And remember that just because you’re the commander it doesn’t mean you get to do everything your way. Remember to satisfy your zerg, too. Get them XP, get them fights, show them a good time. It’s important to keep your blob feeling comfortable, confident and fulfilled if you want to have loyal followers.

I’m not capable of tagging in real WvW for personal reasons but I do tag in EOTM a fair bit. A positive morale goes a long, long way. I can’t tell you how many times my zerg has grown instead of shrank during the times we’ve been repeatedly defeated because I was kind to my zerg. People won’t care about losing (to an extent, of course) if they’re having a good time.

For starters, impossible stats.

Second, he was probably trolling.

And lastly, don’t feed the troll. If he’s looking to inflate his ego, don’t play his game by fighting him some where that’s in his favor like near a tower or in a supply camp. Make him come to you, make him go out of his comfort zone, or better yet, ignore him completely and make him feel irrelevant. If he’s a bunker Ele he probably has to taunt you to get any kills because he probably does crap for damage and needs to give people a reason to stay around long enough that he can whittle them down.

Builds you like/dislike to fight/play

SpellOfIniquity.1780

Ran into my first Dire D/D condi Thief with Lotus whirl dodge w/ Caltrops, Signet of Agility, and acro for good measure. That was kittening horrific.

I watched several groups of people trickle in trying to kill him for several minutes (usually around 3 at once). Every one of them was every downed or forced out to reset. And all he did was spam 3 and evade. Popping signet, steal, & heal on CD to keep himself healthy and stocked on iniative & dodgerolls.

It was pretty bonkers. I love that gw2 has so much build depth but I dislike how mindless some of the execution can be.

I find a lot of builds in this game lack tactical counter-play. Once the fight begins, outcomes are often pre-determined based on rock-paper-scissors. Fortunately, there are still some great fights to be found!

If you have strong kiting potential, that’s something that this build has trouble against. Since it requires being on top of it’s target to deal significant damage, your best bet is to force them to constantly close the gap on you.

Longbow Ranger can do quite well against this build if you’re good at kiting them around. If not Ranger, longbow Dragonhunter or other things that are effective at the keep away game. Think of them as a melee Warrior. If you can stay away from them, it becomes a bit comical watching them struggle to get close to you while you whittle them down. All that damage that they have and nothing they can do with it.

I moved around a bunch after I left DH but have settled on Maguuma, and I’m happy with that choice. It reminds me of home (DH before it fell apart) in that I can depend on my server mates to back me up in an outnumbered fight and I can expect us to pull through even when things look grim.

Mag has it’s share of bad eggs but there are a lot of nice folks as well. With how much I hated fighting the server, I never thought I’d like being on it but I’m pleased to say I was wrong. So if you ever need another home, think about coming over (:

Slow death of the "forgotten" Guest server

in WvW

Posted by: SpellOfIniquity.1780

SpellOfIniquity.1780

Honestly, I’ve thought since the beginning that the linking was a soft path to mergers or server deletion for these reasons.

The idea of mergers has been raised and resisted for years, in large part because of server identity and associated infrastructure (ts, websites, etc). The links were a way to see what mergers would look like (gameplay wise) while still being reversible. Meanwhile, server identity would be eroded as time went on, with people getting used to not seeing their servers names being mentioned or written anywhere, which would make server deletion/merger less controversial.

So, in effect, the links provide a way for Anet to (1) see/show how reducing the number of servers by half would look, and (2) to get the players used to not thinking about half the servers, thereby undermining resistance to deleting them, and it would be reversible if it looked like it wasn’t working.

To give you an idea of how effective the approach is, I’ve been on Ehmry Bay for years (only server I’ve been on), and there was a thriving community there with a lot of server loyalty and an active website, even when it tumbled to the absolute bottom of the rankings. The week before the linking, our score was supposed to put us above HoD in the rankings, but Anet didn’t account for that when they linked the bottom half of servers with the top half, so HoD became a host server and we became a linked server.

Like your experience, almost all of our core guilds (including those who’d helped us climb back up from the bottom to about midway) eventually transferred off, a lot of veteran players stopped playing (tired of the game, and no longer compelled to stick with it due to loyalty, relationships, etc), and I suspect most people wouldn’t kick up a fuss if Anet announced server mergers/deletion tomorrow. But I also suspect most people wouldn’t have left, nor would they accept server deletion, if we’d been and remained a host server.

So, yeah, I’m fairly certain what you’re experiencing is the prelude to your servers eventual deletion. If it’s intentional (as I suspect), then I don’t expect Anet will make the changes you want to restore your server identity.

(Note: HoD was a great server to be linked with, and there was no animosity from them not being linked to us as a host. They’re also a linked server now, so for all I know Ehmry would have been too even if we’d started out as a host server).

Expanding on what has been said here;

Competitive hate/loyalty is a big part of what makes large scale player versus player fun. Examples being Heroes and Villains in DC Universe Online or the Alliance and the Horde in World of Warcraft.

I didn’t play WoW but I did play DCUO and I loved hating on those pesky Heroes. It made me feel like I really belonged to something and it was fun getting in to that prideful mentality.

While I understand that from a business standpoint this wouldn’t benefit Anet, I do feel it would generate a lot more loyal players and more aggressive competition. Now that servers have been linked and people have been shuffling around so much, server names don’t mean anything anymore. We’re all just fighting other blobs for mediocre rewards against broken builds with broken siege.

I would prefer there to be server loyalty over the more activity that merges bring but not everyone is going to feel the same way I do. I know plenty of people that could care less about server loyalty and it’s unfortunate because it’s a really enjoyable way to immerse yourself and to get that competitive drive going in full force.

Only reason I’ve server hopped so much is because I’m always looking for a place I’m willing to fight and die for. Darkhaven was that home for me for the longest time but many of the people I cared about left or stopped playing. Since my home was made up of the people I cared about, I didn’t want to stay if those people weren’t there.

I’m not sure what the proper solution is so I can’t say much other than that I’m upset. If I’m not giving constructive feedback I’m just whining. I just want that pride and loyalty back. “Grr I hate this server this week, grr” isn’t the same as “grr I hate that server and love this server and we’re better than them!”

Looks really good, would you swap in a dagger and change to quickening thirst so you get some runspeed?

I’m sure that could work, certainly. I just enjoy the healing that Blood Bond provides as it’s very easy to achieve the required bleed stacks. I actually think it’s either broken or the description is incorrect because it procs when ever I strike a target that has the required amount of bleed regardless of whether I applied them or not.

[WvW] A build I've been enjoying

in Necromancer

SpellOfIniquity.1780

So I made some slight alterations (very slight) and have found this build to be more than just enjoyable. As long as I can maintain a few conditions on my target, my health quite often will go up faster than it goes down. With how much health and toughness I have coupled with all the little heals, I’ve been fighting people who can’t get me below 80% health and just end up trying to run or die trying to bring me down.

Again I wouldn’t call it optimal but it does have a lot of potential for some interesting play. In zergs, although your conditions won’t be doing a whole lot of damage since condition builds are just in general bad in zergs, you still get a ton of heals from Parasitic Contagion and Well pulses. Earlier tonight I got caught in an AOE bomb from the enemy zerg and I survived because the WoC I had dropped just seconds prior was feeding me a bunch of heals. The ground I was standing in was painted completely red from enemy AOE’s but I survived from all the siphons and PC.

Here is the updated Bloodeater build.

This build has re-invigorated my love for Necro. I had shelved it for a few months since my old Corrupt-o-mancer build was no longer viable (core Necro, no stunbreaks, no stability, bad Life Force gen but massive condi burst) but this new one has brought me back to being a Necromancer main once again. I hope someone else tries this and enjoys it as much as I do!

How much Health do I need for roaming?

SpellOfIniquity.1780

While a bit more health surely won’t save your from power spikes, it may save you from being insta gibbed by conditions.

Valid point. That’s why it’s important to bring ample condition removal and to know your battles. Thief can decide who they want to fight and where they want to fight them better than anyone else. If you see that there’s too much condition pressure for you to handle, disengage and either reset or leave entirely.

But yes now that you mention conditions, vitality would help a lot more in that situation. Still, I think health is a lot less important than discipline and working with the mechanics you’re given. Since it seems more than one person disagrees with me however, maybe I’m just being opinionated. I’ll stop trying to prove a point that’s not there.

How much Health do I need for roaming?

SpellOfIniquity.1780

Might not want to follow my advice but I prefer to go with the least physical defence possible and focus entirely on what traits and utilities to bring. Health and Toughness don’t do a hell of a lot for you when a lot of players can pump out 50k damage in 8 – 10seconds.

The more squishy I am the better I tend to play because I’m aware that I have no room for error. It helps to remind me that I need to be 100% focused on what’s happening because every hit could be the last one I take. Once I’ve gotten comfortable enough with the profession in that I know what skills/utilities to use when and how, then I might start swapping to a more tanky build.

Start by disciplining yourself instead of giving yourself training wheels.

Just be sure you bring the proper traits and utilities to deal with different circumstances. Always have stunbreaks, if you’re all glass, two stunbreaks is probably the best idea. If you can work it in to your build, those stunbreaks should also cleanse conditions or you should have traits/other skills/utilities that cleanse conditions. Throw in some blocks and invulns if you have them too. Worry about what your profession can provide instead of how much Toughness and Vitality it can have.

He’s a thief. His base health is 11,645.
He needs vita in his build. It isn’t training wheels lol.

Okay. So 4 or 5k extra health will mean he gets three shot instead of two shot then.

That little bit of extra health might save you on some rare occasions but proper dodging and skill management will save you a lot more.

Maybe training wheels wasn’t the right description but I stand by the fact that working with less room for error will make it easier to become a better player. You can then reward yourself with a build/gear that is more forgiving even though you’ve now become skilled enough that you don’t necessarily need it.

Also note that I did say “might not want to follow my advice” because I’m aware that it may not work as well for OP as it does for me.

You have listed ranger, necro and warrior. That’s a far cry from 11,645 hp.
Do you actually play a thief/guardian/ele in wvw with no +vita/toughness?

Lol, Thieves have a ton of evades/mobility, Ele’s have a ton of sustain and defensive options and Guards pretty much have perma-blocks with Dragonhunter. They might have low health but their mechanics are what make that acceptable.

Why do you want to rely on health instead of what the profession is giving you with it’s mechanics?

And actually I play a standard Assassin/Berserker Ranger with 16,055 health and if I’m not careful, I die in three to four hits. I’ve got a lot less evades, blinds and mobility than a Thief and I do just fine most of the time.

Ranger discrimination.. lol

SpellOfIniquity.1780

Ranger is problably the profession with most bad players per capita (Some of them don’t even know they have a weapon other than Longbow)

Most WvW players can’t even dodge pin down, most WvW players regardless of profession are just varying degrees of bad, and that’s in a game where the playerbase is already way below average as a whole…

In my time with the game and WvW, I’ve created a mental chart on the skill level of players I encounter either while roaming or brawling with in open field zerg fights.

Brand new, Level 1
Entirely new to the game or possibly with a disability of some sort (and I don’t mean that in an insensitive way), these players are usually keyboard turning, standing in place, not dodging and probably know nothing about their class. They don’t even hurt when ignored because they’re probably still in green gear.

Average PUG, Level 2
Familiar with WvW zerging, rarely does anything else. Probably primarily a PvE player or maybe just doesn’t enjoy doing things alone. Likely using a build they found on Metabattle or some weird personal variant. Can do some damage if you ignore them for too long, best to kill them ASAP as they’re not likely to know how to defend themselves.

Average roamer, Level 3
I would put myself in this category. Is familiar with combat and has an advanced understanding of their profession. Knows what things to look out for and what things to bring with them. Is either using a faceroll carry build to ensure the highest likely hood of a win or a personal build built to survive various different encounters. They’ll hurt a lot and can be a major pain if left unchecked.

Above average roamer, Level 4
Advanced understanding of their profession/build and many other professions. Is capable of 1vX and winning regularly but has a tendency to get over confident, pushing their luck and giving in to the squirrel chase. Approach with caution, be prepared for a potentially lengthy fight or a very, very short one. Usually a good candidate to /bow to for a duel.

High skill roamer, Level 5
Knows their profession inside and out, upside and down. Knows exactly how other professions/builds work and exactly what to look out for. Will 1vX and win regularly and won’t push their luck if they think things are getting hairy. Depending on their profession of choice, can sometimes kite small zergs around. Players of this skill are rare and are often only interested in having fun. They’ll leave you alone if they see that you don’t want to fight and they’ll usually cause a bit of rage in /map from players who are getting rekt by them. Either approach with extreme caution or sit back and watch the show (which I prefer to do).

[Roaming] Only Dragonhunter can stop thieves

SpellOfIniquity.1780

I’ll admit that when I find one that’s skilled I’m usually toast but fortunately WvW isn’t exactly filled with skilled players, myself included. Most people are mediocre at best and even more of them are greedy and push their luck chasing when they should be recovering.

Although some classes thrive more effectively in the roaming scene than others, such as Thieves primarily for their evasion and stealth, any profession can work when you have only yourself to depend on. It’s all about how well you play the field and your profession. Thief might have a lot of powerful tools at it’s disposal but I fear a good Tempest, Scrapper and Chrono a lot more than I fear a good Thief. Because those ones are hard enough to kill even if they’re bad, when they’re good, there isn’t much point in trying.

How much Health do I need for roaming?

in WvW

Posted by: SpellOfIniquity.1780

SpellOfIniquity.1780

What's the kill order for small fights?

in WvW

Posted by: SpellOfIniquity.1780

SpellOfIniquity.1780

Focus on the ones that are the worst or the most squishy first. Don’t tunnel vision on someone just because they’re squishy however. If they’re skilled enough to survive, you might want to shift your attention to a less competent player and worry about the more skilled one(s) after their cronies are dead.

Don’t worry about the tanky ones until last. Warriors, condition Mesmers and Guardians should be left to deal with after everything else has been disposed of. Or any one else that happens to have a good amount of defence/sustain.

Back on the topic of not getting tunnel vision, I enjoy making people chase me around on my Ranger in small scale fights. Sometimes people see that I’m a full glass pew pew Ranger and they tunnel vision so hard that all their friends die while they waste their time chasing me and before they know it they’re outnumbered and I’m still not dead. So although killing the ones with the least defence first is generally the best idea, don’t get too focused on them if they’re good enough to stay alive. You’ll just end up letting your friends get killed while you chase a squirrel.

But in all seriousness, pew pew Rangers should be killed immediately in small scale encounters. Trust me when I say I am the bane of every player that thinks they’re going to get away from an outnumbered fight alive.

Condi's are stronger then power builds?

in WvW

Posted by: SpellOfIniquity.1780

SpellOfIniquity.1780

Not really. Conditions can potentially do more damage if not cleared, but the upfront damage of many power bursts is far higher. I whacked a Warrior with a 15K shatter this week. I killed an Ele with a single Vault doing 12K damage.

^

Watch out for condition Chronos. Otherwise, most things can’t stack conditions fast enough to be as much of a threat as a power build. Bring cleanses or don’t blame other people for something that you could have prevented. Can’t tell you how tired I am of the “I don’t want to bring cleanses but condition builds are OP” attitude.

SpellOfIniquity.1780

Ah see, the last few answers are what I’m talking about.

Despite the immense levels of faceroll builds and casual friendly stuff, there are still things that are a pleasure to fight, win or lose.

I can tell when someone is better than I am pretty quickly and if I happen to beat them I always /salute. If more people join, I back up so I can appreciate and study them from afar. Nothing to do with honor (because I’ve got none of it, lol) but everything to do with admiration. Since I’m partially disabled, the level of skill I can achieve can only get so high. When I see someone who I recognize as being very talented, I enjoy whispering them to compliment them and watching them toy with other players if I see them on the field.

I remember watching and making friends with this Mesmer who was full zerk and kiting around almost 10 people, slowly killing them one by one. Someone says in map “WHO THE FxCK IS THIS GUY.”

Or this Thief that seemed to have an obsession with contesting keep waypoints but was obnoxiously good at it. Had small zergs trying to kill this guy but he knew his profession inside and out. Was abusing vertical mobility to the absolute extreme and it was hilarious to watch. I had to whisper and compliment.

A Ranger who was tanking inside a supply camp for a good 30minutes. Watched him kill at least a dozen people and sometimes 3 or 4 at once. This was pre-HoT so no Druid and if I recall, he was also full melee.

And a Necromancer that always wound up dying after getting overwhelmed but he always went out with a bang. So many times I would see this guy juking and kiting 5 – 10 people around until there were just too many for him to handle. I don’t care if he always wound up getting stomped, the amount of practice this guy must have had with Necro to be able to take on that many people without Reaper is just mind boggling.

I love finding players like this because it’s just enjoyable to watch them/get beat by them.

Question about Life From Death

in Necromancer

SpellOfIniquity.1780

I’ve been playing Necromancer for a long time but I’ve also been playing roughly the same build for a very long time. I’ve experimented here and there but in no way would I claim I know everything I should know about the profession.

Recently I’ve been enjoying a Blood Magic build and there is a trait that I’ve never bothered to use and am uncertain about.

Life From Death states that it heals and partially revives allies when you exit Shroud. Does the heal only effect your allies or does the heal effect you too?

I’m a bit embarrassed to have to ask this question but there isn’t any info on the wiki.

Best class for every role in WvW

in WvW

Posted by: SpellOfIniquity.1780

SpellOfIniquity.1780

Warrior is your best bet.

There aren’t any professions that are meta in every role in WvW (scout, roam, havoc, zerg, commanding) but there are a couple that do not fall in to the “useless” category in any chosen area.

Zerg
Warrior can provide buffs and support in zergs and can be a huge asset when using Battle Standard. Although much of their support can be matched by Revenant and Guardian, they can still earn their place in a zerg with their easy frontline capability and unique elite.

Commanding
Naturally tanky and having access to a lot of powerful passive abilities lend themselves well to commanding. Although again, many of their strengths can be matched by Guardian, Warrior is still a perfectly viable and even good profession for commanding. Staying alive and making the proper decisions are the most important things to do in this role. One of those things is based entirely on personal intelligence and the other is based on how well your chosen profession can withstand a beating. Warrior can take a lot of punishment so I would easily rate it one of the better ones for tagging with.

Scouting, roaming, small scale
Literally anything you are competent with is a good roamer. Of course some professions are more ideal than others but again as someone else has said, your skill is far more important than your profession in solo play.
Still, if we’re talking strictly what’s good and what’s bad, Warrior would fall in to the good category as it has excellent mobility and great sustain potential. The major issue with Warrior is that while it’s powerful in 1v1/2’s, it’s defenses are very easy to counter and become much less powerful the more outnumbered you are. Warrior has trouble with 1vX because it’s easy to kite out it’s Stances and blocks. Every profession is going to have difficulty in outnumbered fights but some can handle them better than others. Warrior does not handle this quite so well so it’s important to work mobility in to your build to counter this. Sword/Shield + Greatsword is always a good choice.

Warrior isn’t as good as a Guardian at zerging or commanding and it’s not as good at roaming as a Thief or a Mesmer but it’s absolutely acceptable for any of these roles without making any excuses for it’s viability.

WvW Roaming Viability

in Necromancer

Posted by: SpellOfIniquity.1780

SpellOfIniquity.1780

Necromancer can bring a lot to the table that other professions can’t but it requires a co-ordinated team. Necromancer needs to be babysat in small scale WvW. You’re very easily focused and even with Reaper, you can be at a huge disadvantage if enough people are smart enough to work on you before anyone else.

If your buddies can support you with buffs and heals and you’re all moving in a phalanx formation, you will be a massive asset to your group. Weakness, Vulnerability, boon stripping and corrupting, etc. are things Necro excels at.

If your group is more casual however, it would be very punishing to roam with. Since Necromancer cannot kite or reset at will and has no blocks or invulnerability, you’re going to basically explode when enough people turn their attention to you. You’ll be the sacrificial lamb any time your group gets outnumbered and needs to retreat or you’ll be the first one to die any time you’re against a group that’s experienced. PUG’s and “average” roamers shouldn’t be a huge issue but if enough decent players are in one area and your group isn’t disciplined, it might end badly.

Unfortunately, mobility is king in WvW roaming no matter how you slice it. Being able to glide across the battlefield will save your behind and win you far more fights than holding your ground will. No one cares about what’s “honorable”, only what keeps them alive. Necromancer does not have the necessary mobility to be a good roamer. It does have some strong juking skills like Spectral Walk and Flesh Wurm but proper usage takes a lot of patience and skill.

I used to do a lot of solo roaming on Necromancer but have since given up the hobby due to the overwhelming amount of deaths. It’s extremely strong 1v1/1v2 if you’re competent with it but the problem is that in WvW roaming, people tend to continuously join the fight. You kill 1 and another joins, just as you kill that one, the first one shows up with a friend and it keeps inflating. If you’re a Necromancer, you can’t kite away to recover from that.

Tldr; Massive asset and very powerful if the group is disciplined and skilled. Extremely vulnerable and requires a lot of situational awareness if the group is casual. Does not have enough mobility to save it from being outnumbered and will 9 times out of 10 be killed as a result. So either your group better be co-ordinated and intelligent or you’re in for a rough ride.

[WvW] A build I've been enjoying

in Necromancer

Posted by: SpellOfIniquity.1780

SpellOfIniquity.1780

Looks like fun and I could see the well totally throwing people off guard. One thing I would try is swapping out well of suffering? Poison Cloud(CPC), or particularly well of corruption(you get protection, dark field and LF still, baddies now get de-booned?) CPC would let you swap to Martyr, which has it’s uses. (More before they nerfed it into the ground though)

I could be totally wrong though.

Well Of Corruption would be “better” than Well Of Suffering but I chose WoS because it’s on a lower cooldown, Vulnerability increases incoming Condition Damage and most people don’t stand in Wells for longer than a second or two anyway. Against certain people, I would probably swap to WoC but I go with WoS by default.

CPC is another one I would slot depending on who I’m about to fight. The beauty of WvW is that you can change things on the fly. If I see a Ranger coming at me with a longbow, I’d probably drop WoS and replace it with CPC. You’re absolutely right on both points but the slotted utilities are very much a matter of preference. If you want to give this build a shot, you’re welcome to swap a few things around to find what’s comfortable for you.

I’ve only been using this build for a day or two so things may change over time. I just wanted to share for people to mess around with something outside the meta. Some people like myself are just a little masochistic and enjoy the challenge of using a sub-optimal build :P.

That and I just plain and simple don’t like Reaper but I adore Necromancer.

[WvW] A build I've been enjoying

in Necromancer

SpellOfIniquity.1780

So let me just state a few things before I go ahead and share.

This is a small scale/solo build. It does not use Reaper. I wasn’t trying to achieve anything other than some good sustain to compliment my high Toughness. I understand that Signets Of Suffering would benefit the chosen traits. In no way is this a “recommended” build. I have no idea if it’s been posted here before. Intelligence Sigil is to better control Plague Sending.

To make a long story short, I shelved my Necro a few months ago because I was tired of getting steamrolled in WvW. Without Reaper, I’m simply at too much of a disadvantage but I dislike how Reaper feels. So, it’s either Reaper, less fun, more wins or, Necromancer, more fun, less wins.

Coming back to it today, I tinkered with different traits and utilities to see if I could put something together without changing my gear and I landed on this build which I’m going to call the Bloodeater

By no means is it optimal or amazing but it’s very fun and obnoxiously beefy. I was face tanking 4 people earlier tonight for a good 5 minutes or more and I never went below 30% health. That’s with one stunbreak and no stability excluding Plague.

Of course I’m sure a competent player would be able to wear it down but I wanted to share this in case someone’s looking for something different. So give it a shot and have fun (:

Builds you like/dislike to fight/play

SpellOfIniquity.1780

So currently playing base power shatter mesmer not these HoT classes and quite frankly all HoT specs are a pain in the backside. The only thing I can reliably beat without having to focus too hard is reaper and power eles. Everything else is much more dangerous and a split second not focusing will lead to me downing.

Daredevils are a pita for me because they break target lock so much and shut down power mesmer so effectively. Especially the ones running bandits defense as they can negate my burst every time while shutting down clones/phantasms with stealth.

Dragonhunters, warriors, revs, scrappers and druids are pains for obvious reasons, they can out sustain and have a number of auto procs to mitigate my burst.

When I go chrono with the build I posted on the mesmer forums I can go toe to toe with a lot of these builds as I get more blocks and CC from the shield which really helps. When playing chrono I find power berserkers more fun to fight and can make condi mesmers re-evaluate their choice of EZ build. Druids are much more manageable as I have enough CC and powerblock will lock them out of their sustain.

It saddens me that this truly is the state of small scale WvW. I prefer my core specs on all my classes and it sucks that there are so many fights I know I could win had I just taken the elite spec instead.

I main a standard pew pew Ranger and although I win a good share of my fights, I’m always giving it 110% in those fights. I have to be so on the ball or I’m toast in a heart beat. Last night was a very good example of that – Usually Warriors are easy for me because I can kite them so effectively. As long as I sheath my bow when they’re blocking so I don’t get reflected, it’s no problem. But this Warrior last night got close enough to me to hit me just one time and that was enough to cost me the fight. He hit me with a Rush because I had been clumsy with my Swoop kiting and I lost 70% of my health. After that, I wasn’t able to tank anything else and he only needed to hit me one more time to win, which he did.

I enjoy the challenge of being at a bit of a disadvantage but I don’t enjoy feeling like my losses could have been avoided based on something other than skill. There are just so many fights since HoT where going Druid or Reaper would have easily saved me a death instead of being a better player.

SpellOfIniquity.1780

Mostly roaming:

  • condi mesmer – My build (power rifle engi) only has 1 condi cleanse on a 20s cd; cannot compete at all. Furthermore, my defense is mostly mobility and using lots of active skills, so I am especially screwed by confusion and torment.
  • thieves – balanced, but unfair. They can always get away 1v1, so they’re no fun. If they know what they’re doing, you cannot win because they’ll always escape to 20000 range and reset the fight if it’s going badly for them. Also, basilisk venom being unblockable is a huge pain because I rely on gear shield to block, so even if I see them coming with venoms up, I can’t do kitten about it.
  • Invuln zerkers – 0 0 0 0 0 invuln invuln invuln block block block 0 0 0 0 resistance for ~15 seconds. Meanwhile, they’re faster than you, do more damage, and have like an hour of stability. You have to wait a LOOOOONG time for an opening. It’s just no fun to play against. I basically have to run away for a full minute before finally turning around to attack them and by that point some of their invuln cooldowns are up again.

If you’re squishy and the Thief is squishy, it’s all about denying those sneak attacks and counter pressuring their heals. As soon as they Withdraw or Channeled Vigor, lay the damage in to them immediately after. When I had an Engineer, I found it was effective to respond to their stealth with my own stealth by using a Toss Elixir S followed by a Magnet as soon as they became visible again.

Also, when a Thief retreats, you should too. Don’t chase them, back off and recover. Let them decide if they want to come back to re-engage you. You know they’re there and you’ll see them coming which means they won’t have the advantage of a surprise attack.

Thieves are a lot less scary when you show them that you’re not falling for their baits and kites. If you teach them that you’re the one in control of the fight, most of them will stubbornly buzz around you like a fly until they push their luck too far. It’s the ones that know they have limits that you should be afraid of. The ones that know when they’re beat so they disengage completely until they can jump you when you’re not prepared.

SpellOfIniquity.1780

For the sake of knowledge and discussion, I thought it would be a fun idea to start a thread based on builds that we like to fight and like to play, as well as hate to fight and hate to play.

If we describe things that give us difficulty, others who are more experienced can give tips on how to improve.

For example, I like to fight condition Mesmers when on my Warrior. Probably for obvious reasons but I find the fights very enjoyable because they tend to last quite a while and it can be a tug of war at times. I’ll get low then they’ll get low and it gets the heart racing.

I dislike fighting bunker Druids because they’re incredibly difficult to kill unless you have respectable access to CC’s and are very wise about timing their usage. I find it extremely unenjoyable to fight these builds as their reset potential is about as high, if not higher than a Thief’s and it feels like I’m putting way more effort in to the fight than they are.

If you have questions or gripes, write them here so we can learn some stuff from each other!

Note: This is speaking from a small scale/roaming perspective in case it wasn’t clear.

Badge awards need to be increased

in WvW

Posted by: SpellOfIniquity.1780

SpellOfIniquity.1780

This is an old thread.

Yes, a friend of mine bumped it who thinks that the badges still need to be buffed. And although I don’t feel as strongly about it as I did when I initially made this thread, I do still feel that the income is rather low.

It’s nice that they made changes to how purchasing items work which has made spending BoH a little less of a frightening concept. Still, I have a hard time building them up as I’m often using them on “traps and tricks” and /// am not getting enough income to support those purchases on a regular basis.

But for those who disagree, I can understand why. Not everyone spends their Badges Of Honor as often as I do so it’s a little bit my fault and a little bit ANet’s for giving us so few.

Well, I have to admit I very rarely bother with supply traps and usually use the ones I get for free from, what I think is rank up chests. Usually I deploy them when we probably can’t hold anything for long and can only waste their time. I don’t like how they go away if I switch maps. As for disablers, I usually wait for big spender daily, and then spend it on a few; the chest gives some of the badges back. I have a good amount on each character I play often.

Side note for some that may pve in HoT maps a bit: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Ley-Energy_Matter_Converter has frequently sold Box of WvW supplies which contains blueprints and food. It’s been appearing a bit lately, so I’ve been getting those as well. (Including Today). The map currencies are by and large incredibly expendable so that I think is a good purchase.

I am constantly buying tricks and traps. I use Stealth Traps shamelessly on Thieves and Mesmers, I troll zergs with Supply Traps by dropping them behind them near supply camps for when they retrace their steps and of course Siege Disablers are just useful everywhere, really. I run out of all 3 of them monthly and I stock up on about 30 each. Every time I re-stock I pretty much deplete my Badges.

So again, I understand it’s very much my own fault for spending so much but at the same time, I feel the badge drops could be a little more generous. I’m currently at 845 because I recently re-stocked.

Condi/Condi-Power Mesmer Roaming

in WvW

Posted by: SpellOfIniquity.1780

SpellOfIniquity.1780

Maybe it’s another NA Vs EU difference. Every Thief I have come across in my current matchup is D/P and the duelling areas are at about 70% Daredevil. Mesmers are almost extinct although I did see a condi Mesmer yesterday but it died to all the D/P Thieves in seconds.

D/P is THE roaming spec now on EU at least because it’s very easy to achieve some massive damage numbers with just shadow shot and auto-attacks alone whilst also being able to escape almost any encounter…unless there’s an enemy Thief.

I seriously struggle against Condi-Mesmers as D/P Thief (if they see me coming or have half-way decent reaction speed).

There’s nothing critical to dodge/interrupt/blind. It’s insanely survivable/slippery, relentlessly stacks condis on spammable/low-risk skills, and has tons of sustain.

I may be doing it wrong – so please throw out tips. Mesmer was actually my first 80, so I thought I knew the class well enough, but I must be missing something given your experience.

In my experience fighting them as a standard pew pew Ranger – Dodge “Confusing Images” (the long channelled purple beam) or cleanse it immediately at the end of it’s channel so as to cleanse all the stacks instead of just a couple. Destroy phantasms and kite, kite, kite. They seem to really hate me and I’ve had a discussion with a condi Mes before who told me that good kiters are a weakness for him. They don’t usually manage to get more than 2 conditions on me at any given time since I’m always so far away from them. As a Thief, I would suggest a lot of hitting and running. Drill some damage in to them then shortbow 5 the hell out of there, poking at them and their phantasms from a distance to maintain combat before re-engaging again. Blink is a good mobility skill but it’s usually one of the few that they have. They don’t have good chasing potential so forcing them to run after you is usually a good way to wear them down. Also note: If they’re using shield, stop attacking when they block or they’ll be able to block again.

My Ecto Gamble Experience

in Players Helping Players

SpellOfIniquity.1780

I’ve done it a number of times but I only ever gamble in very small quantities. I’ll do 10 – 30 at a time and see if I make a couple ectos back. Once I win enough times to have made a profit, I stop for the day.

Unfortunately, even in small scale like that I’ve lost a significant amount, too. I’ll gamble 30 ectos and in two or three tries suddenly I’m down to like 5 ectos left. It literally just happened about 10minutes ago and after reading this thread, I don’t think I’ll ever bother with it again. I don’t have the luck for this stuff. I never win anything IRL and never have in any games either. If anything I’m one of those people who’s cursed with the kind of luck that golf ball would hit me in the temple in the middle of a desert.

Was trying to defend you nerds today at your spawn. Telling SF to back off and that DH has been getting it hard enough today (saw SBI wiping you guys every where you tried to go). I was going tonic form and trying to be passive with some of you guys but people kept attacking me <-<. Was pretty frigging funny when 20+ of you tried to roll me near Speldan however and I managed to escape.

You’re taking it too seriously though, Jelly. Most people are aware of how crappy the situation in T4 is and those of us that care enough to enjoy ourselves in WvW have moved elsewhere.

It’s the people that make the server, not the name of the server. If you’re not having fun, stop playing or move somewhere that you will have fun. I’ve been hopping servers since I started playing and I’ve met literally hundreds of great people because I don’t root myself to a single foundation. I go where the action is, I keep in contact with the friends I’ve made and I make new ones where I go.

Don’t force yourself to endure the frustration. Move elsewhere or be at peace with what you’ve got.

This is a rather arrogant/ignorant statement. Not everyone plays this game like you do. Some have loyalties to servers or guilds or friends. Some don’t have the cash/gold to move. Just because I choose to stay on my server does not mean that I am not allowed to be upset about the current match up. I paid real money for this game, I continue to support it by purchasing gems for gem store goodies on a regular basis. But I do not feel like I should have to continue paying in order to maintain a playable atmosphere in the one game mode that I enjoy the most.
The blame for this whole mess does not lie on the players who remain on these two servers. Anet was the one that essentially murdered both Darkhaven and Ehmry Bay by putting them in this match up. They took two proud, well established servers who were in the middle tiers and placed them in last place to be beat up week after week. I don’t expect you to understand how devastating this is to a community. Most server hoppers don’t understand about communities anyway. A lot of people did take your advice. Guilds that had been the backbones of the servers left, and some disbanded. Those remaining got to watch their servers fall apart over a matter of a couple months. I think the few people who are still WvWing on those servers have more than enough reason to kitten about it. This wasn’t the natural collapse of a server, but instead the swift death brought on by terrible calculations of the game lords.

Actually, community is very important to me. That’s exactly why I left. Because the people I cared about on DH had moved to other servers or stopped playing. Why should I stay where my favorite people aren’t? So I followed some of them to other servers.

I understand that not everyone has the money to transfer but I was trying to be supportive by suggesting that there is still hope to enjoy the game if you let go of your inhibitions. Of course you’re allowed to be upset but refusing to transfer is like refusing to socialize outside of your clique. Have your friends move with you, meet new friends where you go and enjoy the game more as a result.

But I’ll stop trying to convince you since the tone of your first response already suggested to me that your mind was set. Good luck with things, though!

Ranger discrimination.. lol

I like Rangers in WvW… They usually play zerk longbow and make it a really easy kill for me while I try to learn thief.

Like legit, I get rolled by all sorts of classes, but killing a ranger is always a sure way to rub my ego back into place.

Need more rangers!

I feel the same about killing Thieves. Because 95% of them are too slow or too stupid to avoid QZ + RF. Two shot a Thief not a few hours ago with two 6k Counterattack as well because apparently holding a huge sword over my face and having an icon below my name showing that I’m blocking isn’t enough warning.

“Always assume your opponent is a genius until proven an idiot.”

But yeah I won’t lie a lot of Rangers are bad. Still, don’t get over confident. You might run in to someone who knows what they’re doing :P

Rams buggy?

They’ve also had the issue of delayed damage on gates for quite some time now. How long I’m not sure but it didn’t used to be like that.

A long time ago you would use the ram skill and the damage would instantly translate to the gate. Now, when you use the ram skill, the ram hits the gate and there’s about a half – full second delay before the gate takes damage. I’ve seen people hop off of the rams early on the last hit to open a gate and the gate won’t open because the damage didn’t go off.
