this on the vendor driver though where all works great.
Yep, because the newer driver has certain gpu timings adjusted that the card doesn’t like too much.
report it through your vendors forums, if they have one.
downgrade to catalyst 11.10
Just finished my new PC should be MAX settings.

:p just use dosbox and install windows 98
have you got the vista platform update installed as well?
the sooner umbra fixes their crap and stops blaming gpu vendors, the sooner we get hardware culling back.
you need to provide any information on your systems powersupply or mainboard, we can’t really provide recommendations without them.
lso, I am not currently playing at all due to this card being the same make and model and the fan is acting up.
Good idea, the 8600GT chips suffer from the brittle bumps issue as well (the solder between the gpu and board itself crack)

Computer shuts down on entry into GW2

could this be associated with lets say a fresh install of nvidia drivers, with 2 gtx 690, and the controll panel doesnt properly see all 4 gpu’s?
Ah, what motherboard you got? theres a couple that need each card installed one at a time with a driver update.

Offtopic, but,
shutting down doesn’t have to be clicking “Shutdown” at all. First possibility is to set system G3/S6 state through a PCI call, all it takes is ring0 (eg administrator) access. Second way is to flag the PROCHOT MSR followed by sending #THERMTRIP on the system bus (might not work on AMD machines).
Yep!
Likewise, a hard lockup can be achieved by sending a PCI call to change a device state into the state it’s already at (eg GPU D0 -> D0). What this does is overwrite the current memory space with what the driver defines as ‘fresh’, and will have extremely unpredictable effects (usually driver problems).
Wouldn’t result in a total power off though.
you can’t expect help without providing information on your system components and operating system.
or find a friend to party with and have them join you in the instance.
sounds like you’re under levelled (or your gear is)
If your other games are running fine it’s not a RAM problem, if it was they would crash as well. Since your drivers are updated I guess the only thing you can do is indeed reinstalling the game.
rushing to conclusions, DRAM (or the IMC) can never be fully ruled out.
a weak transistor might pass memtest write/read tests but fail under heavy access.
fps issues seems to be coming from particle effects like fog and smoke (and pretty magic effects).
software crash (access violations) can be a incompatible dll hook from something installed (Kaspersky in older versions could crash games because of the virtualkeyboard). Can also be caused by failing hdd/ssd, or dodgy sata drivers
TDR and error 116’s are usually blamed on the driver, but more often then not a vendor overclocked graphics card is involved.
err, no, 2 690’s is still 4 way sli. it still uses the same sli modes, the 2 690 cores appear to windows via a pci-16x to 8x bridge chip. so they appear as seperate video cards.
but multigpu cards often have more sli issues than 4 individual cards >.>
well look this is something I have been saying for a while now and it appears that a llot of people are mistaken. I spoke to Nvidia and evga and both told me that 4-way sli and quad sli is diffrent. They specified just because a motherboard supports 4 way sli does not mean it will support quad sli.{meaning 2 dual gpu cards}. I did not ask what that reason was because it did not pertain to me, but the graphics cards work dirrectly with the bios{as explained by nvidia tech support} so if the motherboard is not designed to accept 2 dual gpu cards it may not function properly. They even sent me an e-mail with quad certified motherboards. So despite what people may think, and how it may seem obvious 4cards or 2 dual cards are the same end result, they are not.
Oh, i see what you’re getting at, but thats different to what i was getting at.
the 690’s are able to work where quad sli does not because of the built in pci-e bridge chip that divides a single 16 lane slot into 2 8 lane interfaces for each GPU and its logic on the board.
This is all handled at the hardware level. From the driver perspective, the gpu’s still operate in 4 way sli.

Have you replaced the SSD yet?
the OCZ ssd using the same sandforce chip as your F80A also developers random corruption after a few years.
using nvidia inspector to force full clocks is a tad easier than RT based software.
Ah, woops, i meant in in game background. Is there are room behind these guys filled with water, or fog/smoke, or other particle bits that chew through graphics hardwares till they cry mercy.

Volume Bitmap errors are usually benign, stuff like free space marked in MFT Allocated area.
Besides, we are in Europe, not Asia, we do not have tsunamis, tornados or what so ever that could potentially destroy our links.
Most links between Europe (Britain included) and America pass through East Asia.
Also, depending on if France stands between you and the server, there is always a large jump in latency when the routing goes through france.
whats happening in the background though.
or more importantly, how high is the GPU load at that specific time.
Usually caused by a lack of memory and Windows paging out the game when you are doing other things.
perform a chkdsk on both the drive the game is installed on, and the windows drive and then launch gw2.exe with the -repair command switch
Still crashing with "Exception: c0000005. Fixed it for me!

c000005 software crashes (as opposed to stop errors) are more often an incompatible overlay injection or badly written antivirus hook injection into the executable process.
Access Violations are rarely caused by faulty ram, and are only readily blamable on DRAM if they occur in NTDLL.DLL.

Quasar, i have a friend with a 460 that had that exact issue with Metro 2033. He has baked the card to reset the solder which fixed it for a bit, but the first gen Fermi cards are really poor silicon, compared to the 260’s of the past they don’t live long at all.
If you set -umbra gpu it will reduce the load of the gpu a bit in area’s full of particle effects, it might reduce the incidences of these crashes. by decreasing the amount of load on the card
In area’s with dense usage of fog and smoke, your framerate will be impacted greatly.
use the -umbra gpu command switch to work around this insanity.
Squall Leonhart shows lack of experiance dealing with the real world effects file system errors can show under windows.
Sure thing bub.
I have been doing this since the 90’s and despite it making zero logical sense, I have seen this kind of thing for over a decade how, windows and software logically would tell you its a file system error, but they more times then not do not tell you this, be it the os shutting down due to a fault or whatever,
I see, the issue here lays in the fact that you assumed BSOD when Nephilim said Shutdown, based on the bsod standard “Your computer has been shutdown to prevent damage”. If this was the case, i think Nephilim would be reporting a blue flash and a restart, unless his system was otherwise set to not restart on a critical stop error, which he would have posted that it was a stop error instead.
the fact is, tech’s who have been doing this for decades will tell you to run a chkdsk /f as your first move when you have had unexpected shutdowns, if only because they tend to cause drive bitmap errors and unallocated space to be marked allocated, these 2 errors are very common and, despite the fact that as squall says, they shouldnt cause this kind of thing, many times they do…..
Years of experience often leads to jumping the gun. Though I can’t absolutely fault you for assuming BSOD when the terminologies are all messed up these days.
sorry Squall, but, I have alot of exp with this
No doubt, but
it could also be file system errors, despite that making little logical sense given you dont get a bsod or an error screen from it
It was never mentioned anywhere that this was a stop error event.
Which is where we have diverged. A magnetic layer fault or corrupted files will never Power Off the system.
A HDD connected to an overloaded PSU on the other hand……. particularly where the PSU has some from of OCP implemented.
please, explain why the fix worked for the fellow who tried it in the other thread…….when it couldnt possibly help at all…..
His was a stop error.
the more i read your posts, the more you remind me of a guy I use to deal with on IRC who insisted you should never run chkdsk because he said it didnt do what i thought it did and it could damage your hdd(lies and bs….chkdsk is a built in tool to repair file system errors nothing more, it cant damage your hardware)
Guy sounds like an idiot, i’ve resolved my fair share of failing to boot laptops with a simple chkdsk. usually stop error 0×24 or 0×20 though.
file system errors can manifest in many ways, including non-bsod shutdowns, i know its illogical and makese zero sense, but, thats MS for your…..why they removed the auto chkdsk after unexpected shutdown I will never understand….
Its still there, but the dirty bit is just less likely to be set on a bad shutdown. NTFS journaling improvements have reduced the cases of actual file system corruption a good deal in these cases. when forced the only thing a chkdsk usually does is tidy up some orphaned indexes and security descriptors for files that have been removed (Since windows doesn’t remove these by itself)
(edited by Squall Leonhart.2075)
Intel laptops still power down when a critical temperature is reached.
But desktop processors throttle down to the lowest multiplier possible
Um, you know guys, East Asia is currently experiencing external links problems……
Jazhara, you show a fair amount of inexperience and lack of understanding how a file system error would manifest. It wouldn’t power the system down completely for starters.
Now, in the case Nephilim meant Shutdown, based on how a BSOD screen is worded, thats another matter, but the BSOD screen would provide you with STOP 0×22 FILE_SYSTEM or Bug Check 0×24 NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM in that instance.
Since he never posted a stop code, i assumed he meant a full power down, which would only be a CPU overheat event, or the psu is on deaths door.

Suggestions To Clear up Alot of errors with GW2 and other games/apps

Yes,
1. The SDK and Redist file conflict handling is set to keep existing (Need an install script viewer for this). This was changed prior to the release of vista due to the Redist/SDK at the time causing the files to be overwritten and breaking directx9 on vista beta.
2. Its Neowin.

tbh, it sounds like the psu is failing under hdd load. I’ve seen that happen more then enough times…..

recent updates… well, no idea if recent, but any area with alot of particle effects completely loads your gpu if you run it uncapped. and this can crash a gpu thats not 100% stable.
if its a complete power down of the system
check your power supply, check your cpu for overheating.

No you don’t. the i5-480M is a Nahalem (First Gen Core i) CPU which had the GMA HD.
It has 12 general purpose shaders, and utilised a configurable amount of system memory for framebuffer storage.
its called regional network congestion
apart from your display drivers being a few months old, there’s also the mention of depth buffer being disabled (which may be related to the drivers)

vendor overclocked
As in, the company that sells the card (Evga, Palit, Gainward, etc) sells the card at a higher clock than the reference design dictates.
Usually this is fine, the reference design has some headroom to move up the clocks a bit. But with certain design decisions that nvidia have made, like with the GTX 570 missing a mosfet, and the 590 having cheap vrm modules to cut back on production costs, Vendor overclocking can produce unstable cards especially on physically reference design parts, or severely decrease their life. in the case of the 570 and 590 vrm, the cheap(or missing mosfet) results in the ones that are on the board becoming hotter as they have to take on more voltage individually than they would with the extra mosfet, and the mosfets used on video cards are usually not designed for high temperatures that result from the clock rates pulling more voltage through them….. yeah, its confusing but it is how it is.
