Commander didn’t even explicitly say “Don’t do it”. Just that Marjory should really reconsider. But Marjory decided to get belligerent about it anyway.

Actually, the Commander said “I can’t let you do it.” “Let” is pretty strong and deserved a strong reaction. And, frankly, the Commander’s concerns seem a little bit overblown. It is certainly a calculated risk, but the Commander has taken a few of those as well in the past.

Braham, on the other hand, was more than just “rude”. He was dripping with absolute contempt. You could hear the quotes around “Commander” in his voice. It makes me wonder if he hasn’t decided that the Commander was at least partially responsible for Eir’s death. (Thinking something like “If the Commander had listened to me and gone charging blindly into an unknown jungle on Eir’s trail while ignoring all other duties and considerations, we might have caught up to her captors in time to prevent what happened. But he chose to fool around, making allies of frogs, saving turncoat saladheads, gathering intelligence, etc. while my-mother-the-legend was in immediate danger. Time for the direct approach. From here on I’m going to do things MY way.”)

My mistake. I should have gone back and re-read that.

What was weird about Marjory was the fact that she literally just nominated you to be the leader. I.e. “I’ll let you make the important decisions and follow what you say”. Then the very first opportunity she gets to listen to you it’s “You don’t know me! You can’t tell me what to do!” And runs off. The commander wasn’t heavy handed at all. It was a bad idea. The commander said it was a bad idea. And the commander told Marjory he/she thought it was a bad idea. Commander didn’t even explicitly say “Don’t do it”. Just that Marjory should really reconsider. But Marjory decided to get belligerent about it anyway.

And grief over a parent isn’t a good reason to react the way Braham did. Losing a woman who just happened to give birth to you but whom you’ve never actually had an emotional attachment to is an especially poor reason.
A lot of people lost their parents. Marjory lost her sister. The girl she grew up with and loved dearly. But Marjory didn’t just blame the commander for absolutely no reason and storm off. She handled it like an adult. Took some time off and came back to do her kitten job. Her poor behavior didn’t come until much later and for completely unrelated reasons.
Many PC’s lost their parents and it affected literally no one. The story moved on and the PC kept doing their job of saving the world.

The character development of our PC is a little disappointing. I get trying to make him/her a kind of "blank slate, or generally featureless personality so you’re more likely to relate or insert yourself into the story easier, but our PC is just completely passive. This is a terrible trait for a leader to have. Someone who dedicates their life to stopping dragons and saving the world should definitely not be ok with Braham storming off to probably lead an army of Norn to their deaths. This is the time the PC would have put their foot down and stopped Braham. They were fine with talking back to Lazarus the super-nuke absorbing demi-god, but afraid to hurt some little emo prick’s feelings? And now tons of people will die because of it.

And as it was mentioned above, there were plenty of opportunities to show that Braham was patently wrong on almost everything he said. You were not the leader of the pact. You were not responsible for the subsequent collapse of the pact. And for a lot of human characters, you DO know what it’s like to lose your mother. And father. And for others, your sister. But I get it, they dropped the relevance of the personal story not long after launch, so that might have been hard to work in.

And what his mother would have not wanted was for her son to grow up to be such a sniveling little punk and lead a significant number of her people to icy death. But what does he know? Certainly not his mother.

Comprehensive Study of Jotun Language

in Lore

Posted by: Squee.7829

Squee.7829

(Ended up deleting original post because I forgot to disable the interface on the screenshots, leaving a bunch of names on the screen. Apologies to the person that responded before)

In this new map we get a pretty decent amount of lore on races not previously explored very much. Which is great. But one race that wasn’t outright mentioned as much, but still has a commanding presence is the Jotun. Particularly their structures dotting the landscape.
They’re huge rock edifices fittingly crafted by the giant Jotun, from what I understand, and they all have the same thing carved onto them. I suspect it’s a mechanic “copy/paste” thing and not a lore based obsession over a single picture, but that’s not the point of this post. The point is to ask if there is any knowledge on Jotun written language or symbolism. We know they’re really into astronomy, and that is probably reflected in the carvings in the frontier, but aside from that, do we have any kind of knowledge on how to read their stuff?
Attached are screenshots I took (correctly this time) of three different rock surfaces with their copy/pasted carvings on them. One on the overlook accessible via Black Lion Chest drop, the other two are the entrance stones to the hot springs. Pretty much circles in and around other circles, ala Eternal Alchemy diagram fashion and one particular circle near the bottom with what appears to be a chiken or raptor head in it. Any ideas on it?

It’s definitely related to the Kodan(*). But I saw a lot of parallels to dragons and Aurene too. And I’ll explain

After unlocking all the Kodan magical torch skills, you get new dialogue into the insight of the Kodan about the spirit of the fire, as I’m sure you know. For the first 2-3 lessons you can replace the word Fire with Dragon and get pretty much the exact same story.
“To ask why? Why is there an endless cycle of death and destruction? Why do we live if we’re only to die?”
And the fire lives to eat all living things. We Kodan learned much about destruction and death from fire"
Fire made other spirits sad and Koda was not pleased…"

After this point it parallels more with Aurene and our role with her:
He (Koda) demanded that we guide the spirit, teach it where to go."
…“To the things that needed balance. Go now, teach the fire to balance the corrupted ones.”
It’s pretty much a word for word copy of the plot of this episode. Take a dragon, normally destructive and murderous, and teach it to be a force for good. Or balance or whatever.
The last two dialogue options could be (but equally likely are not) foreshadowing to Aurene and her role in things.

As a side thought, maybe Aurene is as also a part of the dragon cycle, and not a deviation from it, like we intend it to be. Like, maybe this isn’t the first time someone tried to use dragons (or dragon magic/minions) for good instead of mindless destruction.

So far the only members in the guild I actually like are myself and Taimi. Kasmeer and Rox haven’t had enough dialogue to really form an opinion on in this episode. I really hope they don’t get angsty and blatantly disrespectful for no reason and wander off. I still haven’t gotten over Marjories quick transition from “You should be our leader! I’ll follow you!” to “You can’t tell me what to do even though I specifically nominated you to do exactly that! You’re not my real dad!”

It is a pretty insignificant area, but I can see the concern. It could be a “slippery slope” kind of thing. Today its just a ledge and a tree. A year and several examples later, its half a map locked away in a BL chest.
It probably won’t be, but given the tendency of game companies to do this, people are right to be worried

I really like the map! And the interaction with Aurene. (I honestly was indifferent to Aurene before, but now I actually like the little thing and want to play with it. Despite its eyes kind of creeping me out).
I always enjoy more Quaggan, and insight into Kodan lore is a nice bonus.

I did not like: Braham’s particular brand of moody hostility. And before I get a flood of replies about “but his mom died!” I know. I get it. I totally understand WHY he’s being such an emo jerk. But I don’t have to like how he’s handling it. Marjory lost her sister and she wasn’t so insufferable about it. But different people handle loss in different ways, and I just don’t care for Braham’s way.

The final boss fight. I’m glad you had confidence in my ability to finally figure it out, but a little guidance would have saved a lot of pain. The boss with the grubs had a nice little subtext for his weakness (even if my first thought was “weak to Death Magic? I’m a necromancer! I have tons of it!” In hindsight I should have known that’s not what you meant xD) The final boss had nothing.

Small things I noticed or am curious about:
It was mentioned that distance is a factor in dragon corruption. Insignificant thing to note, but I remember this argument being brought up in other threads.

Koda are very obviously making comparisons between fire (or the spirit of fire, or whatever) and Aurene (for those who unlocked all the dialogue with the flame tender Koda)

The new guild seems to be off to a pretty rough start. Marjory already mouthed off and followed Lazarus, now Braham, being particularly moody, decided he wants nothing to do with your guild business either.

Everyone knows armor is better. But since they already determined that armor will no longer be sold for gems (only outfits will, and armor will be earned in game), it’s not what makes anet money. Which is something they need now. I’m not saying GW2 is tanking, but I am saying they’re not swimming in money either. Their earnings reports are looking a little on the grim side.

Legendary Armor

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Squee.7829

What I get from the complaints is, this armor is good, but not quite good enough for the effort. Part of it has to do with small parts or details that just make it silly or over the top. And while most of these complaints are centered around the shoulders or helmet, both parts you can opt to hide, or just replace with another skin entirely, maybe a better option would have been to release multiple legendary armor skins for each armor class. This way people can have a wider base to mix and match with and still have armor that moves together. Instead of running around without shoulders and a helmet. Or watching your armor go into battle porcupine mode while your re-skinned shoulders just lie flat.

I personally don’t understand the “it’s no better than ascended armor, so why bother” complaint though, since I’m willing to bet half or more commentors have a legendary weapon or two.

I get that these complaints seem minor – but I would like to add a few things.
Yes I can hide the shoulders and helmet – the point is this: this is my legendary armor – I should not want to hide any of it.
I get that some people like that over-the-top stuff – but give us options. Give us the chance to choose between that over the top helmet and a less over the top one.

Those ears – and those spikes on the shoulders look ridiculous and honestly ruin things. Same thing on the knees.

You had a good thing going – stop where it’s good.

I didn’t mean to trivialize the complaints. The purpose of the armor over any other ascended armor is to look better. Nothing more. So complaints about how it looks are very legitimate ones. So when you say “I worked for it, I don’t want to hide it” I’m right there with you. That’s why I suggested Anet make multiple sets and didn’t just leave my post at “You can hide it, get over it”. It’s going to be a hard set to work for. You should feel proud to flaunt it. Not just re-skin it.

I don’t think anyone can really say what the “first Necromancer” was, but you’re probably right that humans weren’t the first species to raise corpses or use diseases as weapons and whatnot.
As for the Grenth thing, it just has to be understood that almost anything regarding the Human gods and what they did is a human specific thing. Grenth likely did give the power of necromancy to humans, (which was heavily implied by his “…and the rotted corpses of the dead will be yours to control.” line) but that doesn’t mean other species didn’t already have it.

The mystery of Ember Bay - why are we there?

in Living World

Posted by: Squee.7829

Squee.7829

Name one location where the player character arrived at before any other PC. Maybe Rata Novus, but even there, we see some stray investigators doing research on it and just happen to be exploring somewhere else while we’re turning the city back on. It’s normal for the maps to be populated upon our arrival. Just try to accept that and move on.

ps. If you weren’t the one arguing against the handwaiving of how everyone got set up on Ember Bay, I apologise. Your post was just the best at hand.

I hope you also read the initial thread, my last comment was just an example of what they could have done. I don’t need to be the first one on the Fire Islands, I can live with that.

But I can’t accept that the story as it is right now doesn’t make any sense. Taking a ship from Rata Sum and arriving on the southernmost island is completely illogical unless it’s explained in the story. The whole thread is about this one single question: Why did the asuran crew avoid the nearest island (from Rata Sum) and go to Ember Bay instead?

Once more, here’s the map: Rata Sum – Ember Bay

We already had some speculation going on but they gave us no official information.

The explanation is in the name of the area. Where other to land a ship than a bay? Bays are historically the places where overseas settlements start. No one, ever, thought it would be a good idea to sail off in a straight line and settle at the first place they encountered. Ships skirted the coastline until a hospital place was discovered. And what do you know? Bays are that.

That’d be a good argument if they still used water-bound ships. But pretty much everyone uses airships now. The Asura especially would. The straight line might still not be a good idea over volatile calderas, but their options are still a LOT less limited. Combine that with the fact that airships don’t seem to need to land to dock anywhere, worrying about bays is pretty much a thing of the past.

I actually prefer the new theme. Aestetically speaking. I know a lot of people don’t like the "theme park " look, and I get that. But I don’t particularly care for the pirate theme. The point is, not everyone is going to be into the style, no matter what it is.
Logically speaking, I prefer the new look because the structures are concrete and sturdy. Rotting boats might look cute in a "Pirates of the Caribbean " sense, but don’t make for defensible structures. And LA seems to be a prime target for disaster. The permanent cement looking structures will hold up a lot better in a crisis.
And neither the old or new LA look like they have any residential appeal. I never got the sense anyone ever LIVED in LA. Even with the old pirate theme.

The above paragraph and perhaps a few others from the Ecology of the Charr certainly don’t paint the Charr as a “fair is fair” kind of race. I.e., they probably would not have stopped at Ascalon. They weren’t taking revenge on the new races. They were just using the new races for their own ends. That’s a kitten move, definitely. But not revenge. That’s like saying the African slave trade was an “act of revenge”. No, it was an act of one group being evil to another for their own selfish ends.

The point of that is, that while we may have some sympathetic context for why the Mursaat betrayed the other races (context written by the betrayer, I might add) we do not have anything saying they were just "misunderstood ". They’re still evil. We just see how they’re trying to justify it.

What is or is not appropriate is, in part, subjective though. Yes, Anet has some rules on what language consider punishable, but that really can’t be enforced unless people report it. And what if people don’t want to report it? Because of whatever reason.
Here’s an (oddly specific made up) example: An RP player decides he’d play a criminal. A really terrible guy who believes all Charr should be burned alive or whatever. He goes on and on about gruesome descriptions on how he’d torture and kill Charr, etc.
To a general audience not in on the little play going on, that’s disturbing and inappropriate language. They never asked to see it. They should report it.
But to the group he’s RP’ing with, this might not be worth reporting. He’s most likely playing with a group of friends, and what they deem acceptable for the sake of a good story is well established. So, while a guy talking about torture and murder might be unsettling, it’d also be acceptable as character behavior. (Think Joffrey from Game of Thrones. Hed be banned from GW2 just for existing) Him being an evil murderer is probably a driving factor in their story that they have a right to enjoy.

But they don’t have a right to make everyone else see it. Unfortunately, however, they really don’t have a choice BUT to make us see it. Because they’re forced to use channels that everyone else uses for non RP related things.

And also because the channel they do use has a radius of half a freaking map

A few of you do, I’m sure. But I know I and several (as far as I know, almost all) of my friends don’t. Because I can SEE when people are sitting down. I don’t need the game to tell me. Plus, emote channel is the most likely one to get spammed. And not by RP’ers. I can’t even recall all the times I’ve been in LA (where I spend a lot of time) and I just get a 3 minute wall of grey text saying “XxInsecure Player xX is busting out some moves. Some sweet sweet dance moves” as someone repeatedly starts and stops dancing. Because reasons I guess.

I agree, but i would expect it feel more invasive to have a dedicated channel interrupted and spammed, rather than how it is now?

Maybe. But far less frequent, thus easier to block or ignore.

An RP channel is open to abuse by non rpers though surely?

Most definitely, but only by those who are seeking specifically to attack RP’ers. Luckily, that’s a sad minority. But most people who don’t RP don’t REALLY care about RP people and won’t even notice they exist unless they happen across some in the wild.
So yes, even with a dedicated RP channel, you’d still get trolls, but far less than before. Because now you’re not dealing with the casual troll who is just attacking whatever he/she comes across in chat.

RP is a…niche hobby I don’t quite get either, but I feel like this suggestion would be great no matter what side of the fence you’re on. On the one hand, we non rp’ers really don’t care to see some of the more intimate things these people like to do, but on the other hand, I’m sure the rp crowd would love to have their own little private space.
Like, I’d love to be all “get a room, gaiz” when things get saucy, but Anet just doesn’t have rooms for them. So they’re stuck out in the public where they’re open to all kinds of trolling and ridicule, (which isn’t fair to them. They don’t intentionally go out of their way to disrupt MY game) and everyone else is stuck watching them do…whatever.
So I hope someone important sees your suggestion and does something with it!

Anyone else think it’s a little odd that new cats start taking a liking to us around the same time we start seeing weird "anomalies "?
What are these anomalies? And who are these cats? Are we breaking space time?! WHAT DO THESE CATS KNOW?!
