This has been a long time coming.

I have to wonder why they waited 2 years to release improved/relevant filters that would take a fraction of a day to code.

You should definitely consider applying for a job there.

Yep, and that takes time. As i said.. looking into it.

As a professional QA person… yay! Best of luck there.

It looks like we might also have finally seen the last of “Error attempting to sell”.

If so, that will make me happier than any other change in the entire BLTC system.

Just being able to filter based on items usable by the current character is a huge improvement. Thank you!

I don’t see why removing the ‘under vendor price’ items would cause any risk to the market – simply kick them back to the person who put in the order!

If simply kicking them back was something simply done I’d agree. The sheer quantity of orders to process posses some risk.. and one wrong bit of processing might require a TP roll-back.. which would be … scary.

This is why professional QA is a good thing.

And a free bonus -

 • Access to the conversational emotes that NPCs already use.

Suggestion: player camera improvements

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Stormdancer.4972

Stormdancer.4972

Firstly I want to thank all of you for very clear and well thought out constructive feedback it is always a pleasure interacting with players.

Secondly I would like to reiterate that me posting on this thread does not mean that changes to the camera will or will not happen either now or in the future of GW2 development. Please assume everything in this post is purely hypothetical.

Thirdly I’d like to focus this thread onto a single possible feature for the camera at a time so we can talk about it, discuss technical limitations, and potential solutions to these limitations. Feel free to silently judge those who post before reading everything else discussed so far. :P

So, for the first feature to discuss let’s start with the ‘smart pivot.’ I have chosen this one first as it is one of the more technically challenging features, and seems like it would interesting to talk about.

Currently when you look up the camera slides along the ground towards your character which gives you a very limited field of view (really noticable when attacking enemies on walls in WvW).

I would like an option to always keep the camera at the same distance, so when the camera touches the ground it starts pivoting on the contact point instead of the character (in other games usually know as “Smart Pivot”).

I made a quick sketch to visualize what I mean:

So for the first technical challenge, how could we get this to work when the camera doesn’t know what ‘ground’ is.

The camera should know what ground is same way the player model does.

Suggestion: player camera improvements

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Stormdancer.4972

One additional feature I’d like to see – set the opacity of objects between the camera and my character’s head to something other than 100%. There’s nothing quite like walking through a jungle, and being unable to even glimpse what my character should be able to see, because the plant life completely obscures everything. And if I step further forward so I can see, and then fall off a cliff? Yeah, that’s annoying.

I frequently see “But it would hurt the experience in combat!” as a reason not to do something.

Well, if I adjust my camera in a way that hurts my combat experience… I’ll probably change it back again! I can already spin the camera away from what my character is facing, and THAT certainly ‘hurts my combat experience’… but it’s also incredibly useful in taking a look behind you.

Please, give your players, users, customers, more credit. I know that reading the forums here might give one a jaded view of the populace, but most of us really can figure this stuff out. Most of us can understand the concept of “if it hurts, don’t do it.”

Hello Ryan,
thanks for this information.

Any tips on how to get name of those trolls that kick you from your own instance quickly?
There usually isn’t time to write anything down or to make any screenshots.

Thanks in advance!

There appears to be some nice debug messages for party join/leave that I’m going to see if I can turn into “LFG Messages” in the chat log which should make this easier…

That would be awesome.

And guys? I’m really happy and encouraged to see this level of feedback and engagement with the community. Thank you. Please keep it up.

The best use of polls would be to have people prioritize a list of potential features.

Might even weight them, with an estimated ‘cost’ in terms of difficulty, design time, development resources needed, QA time to validate, etc.

So it’s not just “Do you luv SAB?” it’s “Would you rather see SAB, this WvW fix, a change to this fractal, chairs that work”… that kind of thing.

I’ve gotta say, I’m quite pleased with the things listed today. For once, these are things we’ve actually griped about a lot, being addressed.

Especially the whole concept of a dungeon instance owner. THANK YOU for that change.

And the crafting UI? That’s awesome. I’ve often been annoyed by having to break out of the thing I’m trying to make, just to go make the sub-components. Ideally it might even make those FOR you, if you know them, but… I’m quite happy with this change.

A different reply, because it’s a different concept:

I’m very encouraged to see some movement on the Megaservers. It should come as no surprise that if the changes are hidden to us, we won’t know there’s improvement. If you shared that improvement with us, then we could shape our opinions accordingly.

I wish players were given more options, here. Some people might prefer being in a low population zone with people they could understand, over an active one of people speaking Martian & Ooblek.

And if you have the ability to group by language… then you’re 93% of the way to being able to group people together by playstyle, if they chose to. Give us radio-button flags for RP, PvE, WvW, Dungeons… that’d be great. Choose how you want to play today. What a great advertising tag line that would be.

Chris

Well, that’s what you need Community Liaison folk for. They see what the users are focused on, they go out and interface with the Design & Development folks, get answers, and bring them back. It’s a very important job, and it’s not an easy one.

It is really nice to see some responses, finally. I sincerely hope it’s a sign of improvement to come. Iterate on this a bit (sorry), and you’ll see that becoming truly involved with your player base gets you customer loyalty and goodwill.

“We don’t want to provide a 1st person view, that would let you see the pretty art up close, because… reasons.”

“sense of direction in combat is really important in our game, as well as positioning – positioning is really important.” You don’t even follow the first part right now – I can easily swing the camera away from the direction I’m facing. It’s tremendously useful to do so. And if I need to see exactly where I’m standing in combat relative to everything else, I’ll zoom out. It’s just that easy. Yes, positioning IS important. Like being able to see where my kittening feet are, when I’m doing a jumping puzzle.

Looking for Roleplay

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Stormdancer.4972

Stormdancer.4972

Since the advent of the megaservers, the home server is basically meaningless, except for WvW events.

If they’d give us a ‘RP’ tag, to help group RPers together, that’d be nice, but I’m not holding my breath.

In the meantime, just watch for roleplay happening, since you may wind up on a Megaserver that has some TC people on it. Or RPers from other servers, they certainly do exist.

Unfortunately, for now the Megaserver system really has rendered RP much harder to reliably find.

A couple of nights ago my warband went on patrol. Had a decent turnout, seven or eight of us showed up to march along the roads of Ascalon. All in the same guild, of course.

Because there were more than the pathetically small party limit of 5, we were split into two parties.

I really miss the campfire kits in SWG. Those were great.

I just hope that pressure from certain other games soon to be released in the US that do provide everything you asked for will encourage them to improve, and prove me wrong. I’d love to be wrong about this.

I think the fact that they would be so common is the biggest deterrent for ANet. I think in time people would get tired of seeing their own characters in bikinis, but who knows.

It would have to be a single costume, clearly, not separate armor pieces. And then they’ll add a “hide player outfits” option. :P

Sadly, I think the more likely reason is that ANet doesn’t give two figs about what the RP players want.

Jumping Puzzles as Norn and Charr

Posted by: Stormdancer.4972

Stormdancer.4972

I deeply appreciate the dev input here, thank you Josh! A lot of people really don’t understand programming, much less game programming, and your explanations hopefully help people understand a little bit more of the problem.

That said… if the current camera system has all these occlusion issues… it needs a spanking. A serious one. Because huge amounts of stuff clip out when not occluded (see the Black Citadel, East of the BLTC), and yet, when my camera DOES manage to get behind something… it actually seems to work just fine.

Other games have dealt with this problem before… I’m sure you guys can figure out something. Tweaking the current JPs, and designing future ones with the wonky camera in mind will help, but… it would be better if the fundamental problems were addressed, so that the environment and gameplay don’t have to suffer.

I -like- the claustrophobic sense of the Troll JP in LArch, but… it’s nearly unplayable as a Charr.

Thanks for addressing this, and talking with us about it.

EDIT: A quick addendum – I suspect 90% of your audience would be happy with 1st person acting exactly like the current camera – just zoomed in a little more, and hiding the body & weapons. Nothing fancy about flips, jumps, or weapons… just let us SEE!

The problem is that it doesn’t matter what server you’re homed on – you get megaserved. All the servers are scrambled together, with no sense of community.

My little guild is doing its best to keep public RP going, but it feels like a losing battle – the number of haters & trolls has dramatically increased. And so many other guilds have given up and moved on to other, more RP-friendly games.

And after 2 months without meaningful comment, ANet’s silence remains deafening.

Hello all,

Just a quick note to let you know that we still have a dedicated team working on improving the megaserver issues.

I’m delighted to hear that, nice to know people are still working on it. What issues are being addressed? Could you please (PRETTY PLEASE! (do you have any idea how hard it is for a Charr to say that?!)) give us some info about grouping RPers, as part of the Megaserver flagging?

Megaservers and RP

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Stormdancer.4972

Stormdancer.4972

If it were me, I would handle megaserver for RP server as special cases. The other servers all do what they do, but the RP servers are isolated to themselves. Basically, the RP instances would be crammed full of RPers only.

They could probably pull this off if they included a ‘server preferences’ area somewhere with the character. Add a sorting box for [RP] as a tag and get deferred to an instance of the zone for RP groups.

Yeah, this is exactly what has been suggested many, many times before. It’s a good idea, completely reasonable, and fits right in with the technology they say they’re already using to help group people.

And yet now… over a thousand messages later… not one real Dev or Community Manager response.
