Community Challenge: Server Match Ups

in WvW

Posted by: Swagger.1459

Swagger.1459

The challenge…

Instead of complaining about your server match up, and expending energy to type out threads that get deleted, try building up your server to be competitive.

Yes, the devs need to work on wvw, but it’s the players responsibility to build up their own communities in-game. Don’t expect the devs to hold your hands on every matter.

Professions need cool new skills like NPCs

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Swagger.1459

Don’t get me wrong : I’m not against challenges. And I’m not losing against Ro Venombite. Actually, when I see her shatter two or three times, and come back at 100%, I just sigh and move on. She doesn’t really harm me anyway with her skills.

I’m pointing her as a caricature example of what I think is bad design. Here is what I’m seeing with my pessimistic eyes. Draconis is a high level map, and players there are expected to come with high level gear and skills, so devs are doing power creeps in NPC’s in order to provide “challenge”. Hence, white mantle, perma-frozen Bitterfrost, CC all around, and now, On-steroids Mesmers.

There’re recurring threads here asking for new weapons skills. It’s been years I’m casting the 5 sames skills with my staff. And now what ? Now Mesmers are two, three, four HP bars ? Now, mesmers can dual wield a pistol, and use unload (which is a thief skill) while stacking 1 confusion per hit ? What kind of nonsense is that ? Content-wise, it just means the “commander of the Pact” is a newbie with average skills, and that like 50 random mercenaries know their profession better than the commander.

To me, that’s one of the laziest way to provide “challenging” content (the laziest being just raising the figures) : it’s frustrating, and it gives the (maybe false) feeling that devs are busier designing skills for useless NPC’s than new things to feed their playerbase.

Because it takes time to code all this.

So your real gripe is that you want more skills. Welcome to the huge “we are begging for more skills” club here at gw2.

PvP: The child that is left behind

in PvP

Posted by: Swagger.1459

Swagger.1459

Professions were left behind at launch, and combat is basically a one dimensional game of damage spam with extremely poor roles to play outside of dps. Profession designs, combat systems, skills, roles… you name it, are not as good as they could have been.

There are far less character build options in gw2 than there were on gw1, and that hurts the entire game because our characters are central to the whole thing, be it pve, wvw or spvp.

Want the game to be better, and for players to be interested more in the pvp sides? Then the devs need to blow up professions, take the good stuff out and rebuild with players fighting other players in mind… with roles in mind… and to keep making substantial efforts to put professions at the top of the dev list going forward.

I Need Some Advice

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Swagger.1459

Swagger.1459

I’m a filthy casual calling all other filthy casuals to tell me what they do to get the most out of this game. I uninstalled it about a year ago because HoT just killed it for me. I was making progress at a snails pace and it was so group focused that i found it hard to quickly jump in and accomplish anything by myself. I also constantly feel like i’m falling behind with the living story. I really deteste the living story and would much rather they released large expansions further apart instead of these “micro-expansions” that add more items i don’t understand and make me constantly feel like i’m behind, but it is what it is so i’ll need to try and get used to it. It’s worse now after quitting for a year. I’ve reinstalled and have no idea what to do with myself.

So what do people who play casually and aren’t aimed at raiding do to get enjoyment out of the game that keeps them playing? I enjoy the character building aspect of the game, and the map completion was fun (the first time). I like that you can build legendaries at your own pace but it looks like such a large and confusing process i wouldn’t even know how to keep track of it or even start it. I was thinking maybe my goal should just be a couple specific things? For example my friend who plays WoW is a mount collector and gold maker and that’s all he does because he’s accepted he’ll never be able to experience every single bit of content in the game. Is anybody similar to this in GW? The fact all the “mounts” and toys appear to be on the cash shop really kills this for me.

I’m rambling, somebody help!

Play the game and find activities you like.

I Know this not going to happen for awhile But please lock legendary armor to only being able to change stats inside of WvW.

otherwise it result mostly in thief being able to attack there opponent an tab stat to instant kill people

So you want the legendary armor, that players spent thousands of hours obtaining, to only be allowed to use the stat change function inside of wvw?

Also, how is switching stats any different than a player just switching gear? It’s much faster to switch gear quickly when out of combat if you have alternate gear btw…

Edit- Your request doesn’t make sense btw, and it will never happen. GL

Legendary Armor and WvW [Merged]

in WvW

Posted by: Swagger.1459

Swagger.1459

let me see if I got this right:

1. Raids have a cool down, you can only do a Raid once per week.

Yes. Each raid boss provides a legendary Insight that can earned once per week

2. For completing a raid you get a chest. a chest that contains 13 Legendary Insights.

For killing a boss you get 1 Legendary Insight

3. you need 125 Legendary Insights to craft all 6 pieces of the legendary armor (among other things).

You need 150 Legendary Insights

that’s a total of 9.5 weeks just to get all 125. is that right?

It’s 12 weeks (3 months) minimum of clearing each raid/ killing 13 bosses per week

and yeah Legendary is suppose to be something hard to get, but whats the logic behind the cool-down on raids; Time Required = Challenging Content?

Not as easy as you are assuming it would be

yet another reason why I dont want to do Raids.

Of course they will make the people that have been here from day one and bought gems with real money pay full price again.

What alternative do you propose? That it be more expensive to get more players into the game? Isn’t that the sort of logic that leads to fewer new players?

I’m all in favor of ANet including something sweet for veterans; I just don’t think it has to be a reduction in price for the base expansion.

The “alternative” is that some players just want things free, or as close to free as possible! Wish every company that I have bought things from would just drop me some freebies or super discounts for being a veteran user of their products or services!

The reason I’m asking, that I just noticed now that I forgot to add to the Original Post, is that my friend is very much interested in buying GW2, but I think it would be nicer if he payed like 50 or 60 u$s dollars and get both expansions, than paying 30 u$s for HoT and then 50 u$s for the new expansion.

Better to get them playing now while hot zones have activity.

Elites are better because HoT was designed to provide a stronger challenge to the game, and the devs wanted to shift from the zerker meta that was “unhealthy for the game” (dev paraphrased quote btw). Instead of constantly complaining about HoT elites, you should be fighting to have the devs improve core specs and core weapons and core traits and core slot skills… and to add quality playable roles that players have the option to build for within each profession instead.

Because this game doesn’t need more powercreep, and it could benefit a lot from reducing the power creep that HoT brought

You’re not really paying attention to the entire game are you?

I am, but so many people don’t. They see harder PvE content and just assume that this means we need to embrace and expect powercreep. That is not true. HoT maps, especially now after the nerf last April or whenever it was, are doable on core specs. Is it more difficult than on an elite spec? Sure, I’ll give you that. But they are still doable on core specs. Which means that elite specs could still be tuned down, in some cases by quite a bit, and still be absolutely fine for content throughout the game.

The devs are not going to gut elite specs just for players still stuck in the zerker meta, and who thought the launched profession designs were quality…

Aside from a few “red flag” design issues plaguing the game since launch, it’s time for players to adapt and start championing core profession improvements even stronger.

I am extremely disappointed with the pre and post transformations on the medium armor. There is nothing more immersion breaking than to be on my Adventurer professions and looking like a bulky battle wizard.

There wasn’t even any super “buzz” in chat about legendary armors, it was mostly jokes about the legendary torch.

Edit- Devs, please start putting your fingers on the pulse. There have been countless complaints about trench coat designs, bulky and gaudy pieces, lack of quality high end armors.. Please do something to change the medium armor so it’s more appealing for the medium armor professions.

In all honesty I don’t expect much from reward tracks nor future ones and that in it’s entirety is pretty sad. The only thing most people are after is the end item – of which in a particular case regarding Winterberries… People were unimaginably underwhelmed considering you can literally waltz around in that PvE map and acquire ~54 berries in around 6 minutes with boosters on as opposed to the 50 berries you get in the reward track with sub par rewards and to top it all off – takes hours to complete.

Thank you for your science experiment and warning us. Definitely won’t be picking that track – I had a hunch it was going to be another disappointment.

I really think they should buff the reward tracks or look into ones that are rather sub par. Maybe even add a token track where we can then exchange the tokens into blueprints/food of our choice and by tokens I mean hopefully some sort of existing currency … Idk.. Grasping for ideas but it’s better than nothing.

Yeah, I agree. Would be great to have some improvements considering it’s 8+ hours worth of play time.

Please read my proposal it’s not the typical hey let’s run an old tournament so blackgate can win.

There are obviously other problems with wvw like class balance but the wvw team does not work on that.

Sure, could we have tournaments in the future? Yeah, but the fundamentals need to be dealt with first and foremost.

Things that take priority and need to be in place before tournaments…

Lag fixes.

Population balance fixes.

Core professions need improvements.

Better optional roles to build and use for each profession.

Good story. Nice unique map. Not a fan of the medium Legendary armor, hoped it would have been more appropriate (stealthy design and form fitting, as opposed to looking like battle mage armor) for the Adventurer profession. The “Flame of War” gothic candle holder is not impressive.

I’m feeling that the medium armor main peeps would enjoy designs like these… 1st pic would be the pre transformation, and the last 2 would be the combat form. Stuff like that.

One can assume that the name “soul beast” implies that we will adapt buffs from various “spirit” pets (which was discussed long ago). I’m willing to be it will be another “build this resource to do a couple of cool things for 3.5 seconds on a 15 second lockout timer”, and the normal state will be subpar in combat.

I’d guess that the utilities are Stances, not shapeshift skills. Or Spectrals (because of name). Regarding F-Skills we might just lose the active pet attack and gain something in return. It is very unlikely that we get more than one new form.

Regarding Dagger… got to be condi MH. Otherwise it wouldn’t make much sense.

Whatever it is, it’s probably going to be like a low budget thief with subpar damage output and wonky “spirit” pet mechanics. Core ranger will still be “not good” either.

Sorry, not trying to be rude, but we know how it goes around these ranger parts.

The soft and hard condition systems were designed for pve, that’s why. The entire system was poorly implemented, much like stealth, non heal support and heal support in this game.

so you want a system in which if you have a power build you have already won …. it would be not a great gain becouse after few monthes every people would switch to that and it would be the same thing . You’d kill any build variety …

I want a better system of “checks and balances”.

Edit 2- (Probably way too unrealistic, but what I would do is give each weight 2 choices in the future. Give the Scholar professions a choice between the light leg and this med set. Create another set for heavy Soldier professions. Make 2 new medium sets that thematically fit adventurer professions… I know what you are going to say peeps, but yeah…)

Thought about it more…

I know a lot of work went into these armors, but I’m not excited about the medium set. The pre-transformation makes the character look uninteresting, and kind of meh with the shoulders and head piece. Once transformed, it makes the character look funky with the oversized hood in comparison to the face, and way too bottom heavy.

My suggestion would be to reduce the size of the whole thing to fit the form of the character better, and give it a face cover so the character doesn’t look like a bobble head with a tiny face. By comparison, med Bladed armor and med Whispers are far more proportionate and aesthetically pleasing to look at.

I was really hoping the medium set would be a sleek and cool “battle armor” design, but it looks more fitting for a Tyria fashion show.

I’m sure I can find a ton of images, but I’ll use these as an idea for comparison.

First pic would be the pre-transformation and the second would be the battle ready design… stuff like that would have been far far better…

Suggestion: no new Elite class weapons.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Swagger.1459

When I look at the different professions (and I play 7 of 9) I’m really very happy with the spread of weapons. I think that when the classes were first created they got the mix of weapons just right. Each weapon we had really fit the character of the profession.

The introduction of an elite spec changed that by adding an additional weapon from the pool. In some cases I think that worked ok, in others, just not. And I mean that in the sense that the new weapon choice did or did not fit with the aesthetic of the profession.

Now as another expansion is in the offing we are all eagerly awaiting a second elite spec for the classes, it’s just the thought of them shoe-horning in another weapon class into the professions that is giving me pause.

Do I want a pistol or scepter weilding warrior? hmm….no.
Do I want a longbow or rifle weilding necromancer? hmm..no
Do I need to make more examples?

So as an alternative to this how about this for a suggestion : let us keep the same weapons we have now. Don’t add a new one. Just pick one of the iconic weapons of the class and give us 5 new skills to use.

I’d love to see 5 different skills for the warrior GS, the rangers longbow, the engineers rifle etc.

If we end up with multiple elites in the coming years some classes will end up being able to use every weapon in the game, and as a result we will water down the sense of diversity you get from professions. Why bother with alts when every profession can spec for every weapon and every skill?

It’s just an idea, and I figure it’s already way to late for the next expansion, it will already be set in stone, maybe somewhere down the line we could get somehing like this.

tl:dr – keep the same weapons for new elites, just give us 5 new skills for one of the weapons or a particular combo. ( sword and board )

No thanks.

They can add variant skills to weapons after they release all or most weapons for each profession.

DOT vs DPS

in WvW

Posted by: Swagger.1459

Swagger.1459

This may have been touched on previous but I don’t frequent the forums.
I don’t want to beat a dead horse here, but I was talking to some friends about the (disgusting) condition meta (that has broken this game mode)

The most interesting point was the build spec trade off. For example, players who opt to go full DPS know that the trade off is being extremely squishy. This IMO defines the word balance.
On the opposite side of the damage spectrum, DOT has no trade off and is easily now more powerful than DPS. This IMO defines the word broken.

with so much talk about how to “save” WvW, and rumors that Anet has completely abandoned the game mode I can’t help but sit here shaking my head, thinking people left because of balance. NOT score system! Balance.

Balance should be the main focus IMO.

Yeah, and we have begged and begged and begged… for the devs to look at problematic issues like condi systems, and other design issues, for a long time. Nothing has been done. Best we can hope for is that the xpac revamps profession and various things like condi, burst numbers, stealth, mobility… designs.

In the meantime, just use what’s broken.

What GW 2 could learn from BotW

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Swagger.1459

Swagger.1459

Hi folks,

as a really long Guild Wars and Zelda fan I was really happy when Nintendo decided to go back to open worlds for their franchise. Now, after the initial hype has cooled down a bit I am really eager to discuss if Arena Net could learn something from Nintendos newest sucess for their nearer or further future. Because regardless what you may personally think of that game, one of the highest scores on Metacritic and almost 4 Million Sales in the first month are a benchmark that tells its own story.

Well, I am well aware that one game is a MMO and the other one a singleplayer adventure, so why do I want them to compare nevertheless? Because while playing BotW I realized that the developers took a whole lot of concepts which are also present in Guild Wars 2. And just adapted them to match their concept. So I asked myself the question if this could be done the other way around……

If you do not believe my word, here are some concepts from Guild Wars 2 which are also present in Zelda BotW:

- Enviromental Weapons: While that concepts was kind of scratched in GW2, Nintendo has pushed it to the limit. Every enemy drops its weapon, which can be picked up by you or other enemies. The game goes so far that the environment itself (tress, stones, rocks and even grass …. GRASS…..) can be transformed into a deadly weapon.

Nope. More profession weapons, slot skills and traits are what’s needed.

- Weapon skills: While Zelda do not have skills in a traditional sense, every weapon type has it own characteristics, strengths and attacks you can perform with it. There is also a simple combo system like frozen enemies can be pushed further (an example that was advertised for GW2 but sadly never realized ….) or you can create a fire to generate an uplift to push yourself into the air with a glider (which I want really badly to also be a feature in gw2 ……)

Nope. We already have combo fields.

- Dynamic events: Ok the zelda system is really barebone in this regard. But still – on your adventures you run into fellow hylians who are under attack by monsters or into a miniboss which comes out of nowhere etc.

Nope. GW2 has great events, and I doubt that game does events better than this game.

- Cooking: Obviously not the system itself, but in both games you mainly cook by putting “fitting” ingredients together and look what it will become.

Nope. We have an extensive crafting system already.

Bolded responses…

We don’t need the devs to waste time and resources on any of the stuff you listed in this post or the other one.

i wouldnt mind the immersiveness of botw crafting system or ff14’s for that matter

I’m sure the devs could add a thousand layers of immersion to every aspect of the game, but that means they would need to make major sacrifices to the really important things this game needs and is lacking in.

tell me one of those things they are focushing on now?

You didn’t understand my statement.

Sugg- Medium Legendary Armor

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Swagger.1459

I came in here expecting it to be about “muh trench coat”.

Personally I think it looks fine. I main asura and that hood is no bigger than any other hood, especially considering the ears are supposed to fit in there somehow.

Are there any pictures of it on other races? I can only find the asura image.

I’m not at a computer so I can’t check if there are preview pieces in the wardrobe, but you can look at the pre leg armors and get a feeling for what I’m saying.

Sugg- Medium Legendary Armor

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Swagger.1459

Swagger.1459

I had a few critiques about the Legendary armors before, and I still have a concern with the way the medium hood is designed. The hood overall is too big for the characters face, and makes the character look like a bobble head or wearing an oversized hoodie. Even the Whispers hood is smaller, but still a bit funky looking (front view doesn’t look bad with the mask though).

Please do 1 of 2 things…

Reduce the size of the head piece or give it a face covering.

I have yet to see the back of the armor, but I’m assuming the wyvern face is still there and will not work when using any back piece, unless it’s oversized and covers the entire wyvern face image.

…The image doesn’t look bad on an Asura, from a proportionate standpoint, but I’m concerned with way it will be on the other races. I’m thinking more players would like a sleek and battle ready look, as opposed to a disproportionate and “runway” style that has oversized pieces tacked on.

I’ll look at images from a computer in a bit to give more feedback.

Thanks.

Edit- looked at the envoy armor on Norn again. The hood is oversized to match the oversized shoulder pieces and back piece. My earlier suggestions still stands… Reduce the size of the hood, shoulder and back pieces or simply add a face covering so it doesn’t make the character look a child wearing an oversized hood. I think reducing proportions will make this a sleeker and more battle ready looking outfit.

What if WvW was more like Stronghold?

in WvW

Posted by: Swagger.1459

Swagger.1459

Way back when WvW was first announced I imagined it being more of an RTS style game mode. Like Age of Empires. It didn’t really turn out to be that at all though, it’s more just a zerg fest, run in circles and flip camps/towers as fast as you can just to have them get flipped back over to the other team, rinse and repeat. Which I’m sure it works for a lot of people, but it really just isn’t fun to me. I feel like I have no impact on anything, I’m just another dot in the blob.

So yesterday I started to wonder, would it work for WvW if it was more like Stronghold. The foundation to make something like this work is already in the game. And even though it may be too far gone to overhaul WvW to work this way, I thought it was an interesting idea anyway.
_________________________________________________________

So what if it was essentially a week long Stronghold PvP match (or whatever length of time works). At the start of the match everyone has their borderlands which is your castle/lord room that starts from almost nothing but a basic camp site or whatever. It starts at level 0. From there, the players are the starting workers and they need to rush out into the maps to find resources like food, wood, stone, and metal which need to be returned back to your base. This already exists in game with gathering tools.

As you obtain resources you can start upgrading your borderlands, adding new buildings and troops to make your borderlands stronger. This could work on a passive pre-determined system, or a majority voting system to decide which upgrades you want to go for. Maybe you want to add a blacksmith to get cannons built on your walls, or maybe you want to add an archery training area to produce archers that will patrol the area.

Upgrading your borderlands to have camps will allow you to get supplies faster by having closer locations to drop supplies off at, while the other skritt and ogre type camps can give you other bonuses like extra defenses, tunneling systems to travel through, or scavengers that will collect resources for you. But you have to maintain those relationships to have access to them by sharing your resources with them.

The main goal it to build up a strong base to protect your lord. But you also need to protect your other buildings because if they get destroyed by the enemy they need to be rebuilt which will cost resources. And those building are necessary for keeping your borderlands strong.

Killing an enemy lord would knock that borderlands out of the match, and obviously the last one standing is the winner. If knocking a team out of a match isn’t something that sounds like a good idea, maybe you just gain some extra War Score and then the lord respawns with RI so he can’t be killed again for X amount of time.

Which bring me to the next way to win. As you start to obtain upgrades, kill enemy players and or sabotage enemy buildings, you gain War Score. This is pretty much the same thing it is now, just an overall score of everything you’ve done. But you can also use this score to go for an economic win and avoid having to kill an enemy lord, which is essentially the more defensive style but generally takes more effort because you need to obtain more upgrades to earn more score. This score also acts as the tie breaker in a situation where no enemy lord has been killed.

Anyway, that’s the gist of it. Build a strong borderlands, attempt to break into the enemy castle and kill their lord. Just like Stronghold, but on a larger scale.

I feel like this is what WvW should have always been. What does everyone else think?

Well, you imagined wrong, and that’s the problem…

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/World_versus_World

Under “Trivia”…

“The inspiration for World versus World came from Dark Age of Camelot’s realm vs. realm battles.”

… Seriously, if you peeps can’t handle massive amounts of players in a game mode specifically designed as an “open world” pvp sandbox experience, with hundreds of players battling it out, then please venture to structured pvp. Stop trying to change WvW into something that it’s not designed to be.

Please read…

“World versus World (also known as WvW) is a Player versus Player game mode where players from three different servers, or worlds, battle in the Mists. It features open-world combat on five large maps with up to several hundreds of players per map. In World versus World, players can besiege objectives such as Keeps and Towers with siege weapons, and battle over resources, to win rewards for their world and World Experience for themselves.”

GvG in Instanced maps with Open World content

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Swagger.1459

Swagger.1459

To answer to the question that popped up a couple times in a more concise way about what this would serve/what need it would fill:

(1) more (in my opinion much needed) meaningful guild related activities, including GvG

There are guild missions and active guilds in wvw

(2) satisfy the disgruntled WvW crowd with a hopefully satisfying mode/experience

Disgruntled wvwers want wvw fixed, better rewards, improved professions and combat designs, more roles and improved skills, lag resolved… gvg stuff doesn’t replace the need for any of those things.

(3) add to the illusion of a dynamic world. Imagine for example that the NPC guards that appear in a PvE dynamic event in OW have the guild tag of the guild that won the GvG for that area (I repeat, in an instanced, non-intrusive to PvE event). Would’t that add in a subtle way to the dynamic feel of the world? Wouldn’t that provide some agency to the players participating?

What you are proposing is making copies of pve maps into gvg battle grounds. The devs don’t want that, and the resources to make that happen would hurt the plethora of other important things this game really needs the devs to focus on

(4) increase relevance of the whole OW map and further motivate gameplay in all OW zones for 80lvl characters

As above, and no, it’s doesn’t.

This will never come to pass for gw2. We are not getting a pvp server… or organized guild battle grounds on pve maps… or open world dueling.

Good luck!
