a tail? o.O interesting
“All female, I always play female characters in MMOs. How much money do you think I am going to make trying to hit on another player as a male Charr?”
What do you think this is wow?
yea you probably will still be able to get some silvers sent to you by shaking your virtual booty -_-
Isn’t that almost like Dragon Dragonslayer?
Like I said I always assume its a man, even now I’m assuming you could just be a dude named Dan that loves apple products and cats.
Back when games were installed from floppies and diskettes, SSI released a Dungeons and Dragons game who’s main badazz boss was named Dreadlord. Been using it ever since. It also is getting more popular as it I am finding more often it is already being used. Then I go with SirDreadlord since I am likely the older of the two.
Yea I guess sir sounds better than Dreadlord Sr.
That one sounds like you might beat them with a cane.
Man read some of the above posts and loosen up!
Charr but not asura? Guess with a name like feycat the get specie-al favor (ah see wut I did ther)
Yes Wasaguest, I understand your point more now but please do allow me, my fine fellow, to retort with a perspective of my own.
While I will admit those dungeon token gears are a bit of a grind, it is from my WoW eyes that I look upon them. I suppose I should not be so imposing as to assume others have had the same experience as I, although I do know some have had it worse.
The typical wow grind almost always involved more than 5 players, depending on the time, more than 30. Organizing these players was difficult enough but also competing against them for the gear, and a spot to participate, along with a rng loot system, coupled with week long lockouts made the acquisition of such gear take in some cases several months. And don’t like the way tier 1 looks? Well too bad you have to get it for the next tier.
And then you show me gw2 and say, well whatever set you want is available to you you’ll just have to amass about 1k of these tokens from the runs. Now I can achieve my goal at my own pace, marvelous!
Playing as your wife huh, and after an argument you might “accidentally” miss that next platform on that jump puzzle.
@Lethlora
Bonus points for the wonderfully descriptive paragraph, but of course, such is to be expected of one who fancies herself adept at the English language.
Your own recount of your priest in wow reminded me of my priest Ailment.
An attention kitten… I like that I think I’ll start saying that instead of the regular thing.
God you are such an attention kitten!
One thing I really love seeing is the creative names that people can come up with in mmo’s and this one more so because names are unique across all servers. So it’s a simple request, I would like to know what inspiration you had in coming up with your characters name. Even if it’s as simple as, I spelled my last name backwards, id like to hear it.
My characters,
Swagman, derived directly from the Australian folksong Waltzing Matilda, was my rogues name since vanilla wow
Asphodal Albus, I really like this one, I got this one from a Grecian flower called an asphodel, and there is actually a sub species called the asphodelus Albus, Albus being Latin for white. In mythology it is said that when Persephone accompanied Hades to the river Styx she cried, and wherever her tears fell asphodel flowers grew. Asphodal is my go to female name in any game.
Callideae, my sylvari, I got from the scientific classification of a genus of flower.
I play males, why would I play a female?
Look at pixelated booty?
I have a nice set of booty to look at in real life. I don’t need anymore stimulus. But hey thats cool for you if you wanna play a girl like shes your virtual barbie doll, just remember, when you call someone gay… you’re presenting yourself a girl :S
nothing is okay about this post
I have 5 girl characters and 2 guy characters. 5 are human, 1 is norn, 1 is sylvari. The males are both human.
for statistical reasons, i am female
Well unfortunately as I am gathering no statistical data about this it won’t be compiled, I was just curious what people were rolling.
But I can see you are quite partial to humans. Myself I don’t mind the other races but am not a big fan of charr, dunno why.
And I’ll usually just call the person by whatever they are playing. If its a dude playing a chick I’ll say her, if it’s a chick playing a dude I’ll say him. Even though I assume 90% of them are guys anyway.
There’s so much to do right now on one character I have yet to really get into playing an alt too much.
Lol no owning power tools doesn’t necessitate gender at least not anymore, but I thought it was better to put than eating steak with my hands and passing out in front of the tv.
And that chess comment for some reason reminded me of that weird old man in the cloak from that old chess master pc game. But I like the comment all the same!
In tf2 if no one fives you after a few seconds they put their hand down slowly with a very disappointed look on their face.

Sometimes I do like to treat my female characters like a barbie doll, on my human thief I sent her a pink dye I found on my warrior so I could give her a pretty pink outfit. But I also like working on cars and own a plethora of power tools.
I don’t roll females cause I want to play aroused all day, it’s a little something called variety, and my picks are based on what I feel fits right.
An idea stolen from TF2 be able to buy interactive emotes.
Example: you type /highfive and your character puts his/her hand up in an expectant high five, any nearby players get a F interact pop up the first to hit it does a little scripted high five animation with the player.
Wondering how many guys v girls you have filling up your character slots. For me it’s 3 girls to 2 guys. I think I actually prefer most of the female character models more, they seem to have more variation, but my main character was obligated to be a male cause of the name.
Also does anyone prefer certain races to be male or female? I always seem to gravitate towards making asura male, and norn female.
-edit-
Since I see a lot of people saying that gender is affected by the characters personality I was wondering. Do other people tend to make females with tougher/meaner personalities? Pretty much any of the females characters I make in a game I always envision them with a mean girl personality. Anyone else?

@Wasaguest
I can completely understand what you mean and your post is well done. But 1 aspect that is still slightly confusing to me is your finite definition of an RPG giving its shinnys based incentives to move forward. Give me your take on this example that I believe goes against this.
The super NES game Chrono Trigger is still hailed in the top 10 of greatest RPGs ever made. Now this game has a unique feature (or unique at the time) called New Game + that allowed you to restart the game with all your gear, spells, level, everything. Now I may be the minority here but I’ve played through the new game + mode more times than I know. The game allowed you to get several different endings depending on what point in the game you decided to kill the games last boss (when you start new game + a portal to the last boss became available from the start)
After a certain point there was nothing more for me to obtain, I had the best gear, the best spells, everything. But I continued to replay the game wanting to see how else I could end the story.
In gw2 the explorable dungeon separate paths are similar to this. With the added bonus that the content will remain challenging. I don’t need the extra fluff loot because gw2 has allowed me to shape the character I want and his look (which I’m close to finishing).
So when I finish my dungeon set I will happily run around doing and redoing dungeons or WvW as the role I have shaped for me to play. The incentive for me is to make a kitten looking character then prance him all over the place looking kitten.
What you said makes perfect sense to me but I would like to know why a non loot incentive based rpg can’t be accepted. As someone posted a comic link above, imagine a game that you logged into not to chase a carrot on a stick, but cause it had challenging and fun gameplay.
Would still like a definitive answer if possible.
End game is going fine for me still enjoying the game.
Guild Wars Account hacking more likely internal than "fansites"
in Account & Technical Support
Posted by: Swagman.9013
IF this was an internal Anet hack (for what reason I could not possibly imagine) why would you be having a “log the other person out” battle.
Anet has your EVERYTHING and unless you play 24/7 hopped up on some amphetamines because of your constant paranoia, they can change your password at their leisure while you sleep.
Yea looks like they lied to you pretty hard, guess its time to move on to the next game huh.
I’ll just stay here to lockup after you leave.
How about just
Hey bored with regular mmos? Well this one actually has things to do that isn’t tied to a gear treadmill, like jumping puzzles, exploring cities, playing pipe organs, and a lot of neat other stuff that won’t improve your characters stats or gear in any way shape or form but you may actually find it fun to do.
It’s not about mainstream it’s about fun, your version of fun has stats connected to it, my version is found in exploring a cave JUST TO SEE WHERE IT GOES. Look at that this game has something for the both of us, why don’t you leave me in the loot empty cave and go find some gear in a dungeon, instead of busting into the cave and demanding why loot isn’t present because it took you 30 minutes to get here.
I spent several hours in wow jumping up and under invisible walls only to be greeted by untextured zones. No treasure, no loot, yet I did it all the time and had a lot of fun doing it. Now GW2 rewards players like me with a visually stunning area to admire and a jumping challenge to enjoy.
Just a warning don’t play portal there’s all kinds of jump puzzles in that but no gear progression yet still tons of replayability with challenge maps. I fear you guys may have an acute aneurism trying to wrap your mind around how such a game could exist.
Portal is a action game with puzzles, GW2 calls itself mmorpg game, you catch my drift or you’ll keep trying to sound smart?
Oh whoops I’m sorry I overlooked the MMORPG section of the Game Genres Manifesto, where it clearly states that all mmo’s existing in the past present or future must adhere to loot based incentives no matter what type of challenge they wish to include.
And to the above I’d be fine with the removal of all chests in the game, I don’t run explorables for chests i run them to beat the challenge they present, because doing so is fun. The exotic gear is laid out for you to obtain. Which you can get using easily crafted rares (yellow) I spent 2g on a full set of rare armor from the TP and now i have 4 pieces of exotic dungeon gear. A loot chest didn’t play any part in it and I’m just fine with that.
Jumping puzzles are about enjoying doing the actual puzzle and the excitement of figuring one out. If you just watch a video of someone do it you are missing out on half the reason they are there.
I must have been crazy during the bwes to think that these jump puzzles will be fun distractions for the people that like going off the beaten path and finding hidden things.
Apparently jump puzzles are requirements for gear in order to progress your character.
Just a warning don’t play portal there’s all kinds of jump puzzles in that but no gear progression yet still tons of replayability with challenge maps. I fear you guys may have an acute aneurism trying to wrap your mind around how such a game could exist.
Comparing RPGs to completely different genres and trying to make a valid point -_-
Mind blown.
You’re just angry because the point it makes is valid. A game is a game. You’re insisting that limitless progression is some aspect that has to be in an MMO. That’s like claiming going prone and weapon customization has to be in an FPS game before it’s an FPS game.
A game can stand on its gameplay and not need a carrot chase. If a carrot chase is for you, then by all means, go back to the games that provide that, but please stop insisting that it’s somehow needed here for everyone just because it’s necessary for you to enjoy the game. Not everyone’s you.
I think the level of forum posts speak for themselves, most of the people defending are not 80, most who are criticizing are.
and like I have said before, you can keep being in denial all you like, all the successful long term mmos focus on this aspect.
And im willing to bet arenanet will with this game from now and all you defenders will change your tune.
I am not in denial and I’m not defending, I’m asking you, how come overcoming tough challenges doesn’t give you a sense of accomplishment if something shiny and useful doesn’t appear.
Arenanet already said they aren’t following that standard you speak of like those other long term mmo’s. They said this over and over again well before release. It would be no different than if someone told you a dozen times, that pan is hot don’t touch, but you touch it anyway and you look angrily at that person and say, wtf that pan is hot.
Gaming has “shifted” no it hasnt, its always been about rewarding players for challenge, only in your head has it ever been otherwise.
All MMORPGs focus around this. all RPGs do aswell, progression and reward.
Seriously, stop defending this game because so many people are dissapointed with the direction it took and rightfully so.
What was my reward for completing Sonic the Hedgehog?
Or Super Mario Bros.?
Or Tetris?
Or Pac-Man?
Yes… things have changed.
Comparing RPGs to completely different genres and trying to make a valid point -_-
Mind blown.
Here’s the problem, when was the decree given that mmo’s must have loot based incentives at every turn to keep you interested?
There is no law, there is no rule, there is nothing that says it must be so. You have decided that this rule must be adhered to in order for a mmo to succeed.
Now gw2 does provide shiny loot for you to get, there’s several sets of them in lions arch, they are obtainable using lvl 80 crafted rares. At 80 I spent 2g. 2 gold, that’s right, two gold. I bought a full set of crafted lvl 80 rare armor.
I am now 4/6 exotic and will be getting another piece today. The loot is already there for you to get. Just because a mmoer biscuit doesn’t pop out of each chest I open, is no reason for me to stop doing dungeons after I’m full exotic. I look forward to the challenges each and every explorable path holds.
But you are misinterpreting it. The “rewards” I speak of are exactly that you get to try harder challenges, defeating the challenge is already its own reward. But then you get some people, and this is where the shift I’m talking about happens, while you and me are high fiveing over our victory over that super tough boss, this person opens the chest, gets a green item he can’t use and says “well that was a big waste of time”
Before people start patting you on the back for being totally mature, non-mainstream, not brainwashed by WoW, etc, ask yourself this:
Is it good design if the rewards are screwed up? Does it make GW2 a better game?
Rhetorical question, really. No, it’s not the most important thing in an mmo, but it’s certainly something that can make an mmo more fun if done right.
This is the problem. This sentence
Is it good design if the rewards are screwed up? Does it make GW2 a better game?
I’m asking you to specifically explain why you require cheese at the end of a maze in order for it to be a good maze, and you can’t just say, with 0 reward for finishing, wow that was a challenging maze.
Kal I’m saying that yes the game is focused on loot, that’s what dungeons, hearts, karma, dynamic events, and all those monsters are for.
If you have 700 alternatives for loot and these jump puzzles don’t give the loot you want, go do those 700 other things. Jump puzzles are for a break from the gear treadmill to have fun they aren’t requirements.
And to respond to the other person that mentioned Indiana Jones exploring a tomb with no golden statue at the end. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! You are in a tomb that is who knows how many thousands of years old, admire your surroundings and be amazed at the history of the place. I don’t need a gold statue I’m standing in history.
You might be very spot on with the achievements thing, but I’ve always seen them as 99% fluff and focus any attention on the tough to obtain ones, but I still appreciate the difficulty and path it took to get there, rather than just being ecstatic over seeing letters pop onto my screen and a number.
And i may be different in that I probably play more than a casual gamer, but I’m not scratching my head asking, where’s the end game? Because I know that I have yet to complete all explorables, get world completion, or obtain a legendary. So I still have a lot to do before I can say I’m done.
Perhaps it is just a newer generation thing, but requiring a reward for every step instead of feeling rewarded for completing the journey is such an alien concept to me it’s difficult to wrap my head around.
Is there any explanation as to why a younger generation needs to constantly be thrown a cookie and seems to dislike completing challenges for the sake of the challenge?
EDIT
this is basically what I’ve gathered from the responses and I’d like to refine my question.
I ask, if rewards are what you need to justify risks then why did you play contra, you didn’t get a reward for beating that game?
Response: That’s an entirely different genre of game I don’t expect rewards for beating donkey kong.
My new question,
What did I miss, that proclaimed all mmos ever for the rest of time, must have loot based shiny trinket incentives in order for it to be a success, it cannot have challenging content that you get a sense of accomplishment just for beating said content.?
I don’t want examples of other mmos that have used the above system to great success I want to know why there CAN NOT be another way.
END EDIT
The more I search through posts I see the risk v reward being brought up. I see X is not worth the effort or the difficulty of Y doesn’t justify the reward.
I want to know how gaming has shifted to everything you do requires a shiny trinket at the end.
I’m in my early 20’s and I would assume a large majority of other players are close to that. I also assume that many of you have grown up with several games in your lifetime.
Given these 2 assumptions it is confusing to me then, that the players that grew up playing games like contra have lost all value in the reward of a hard fought and won battle.
In my younger years I didn’t dump countless quarters into a Metal Slug arcade machine because I was thinking of what special object I get at the end.
Ive burned through more lives in battle toads than I can remember, more restarts in street fighter than I care to admit.
I’ve gripped my controller with white knuckles while furiously slamming on the dodge roll button in ninja gaiden black.
All for no shiny trinket or piece of gear or anything. Just winning was my reward. And it felt awesome.
Every map challenge I did in portal using 1 less step, or 1 less portal gave me that feeling of reward.
Even in GW2 every explorable dungeon thatkittennear impossible to complete or each jump puzzle I manage to finish that I’ve failed 10 times previously gives me that same feeling.
“but the chest gave me a white item” how does that negate the challenge you just overcome? The chest could give out a puff of glitter for all I care.
In GW2 the gear is there laid out for you, I know what set I want I know how to get it. The dungeon gave me 30 badges to work closer to it, I’m making progress. But man how awesome and fun when we beat that ridiculously hard boss.
So I ask, am I an anomaly? Am I the only person that beat donkey kong and didn’t say “well that was stupid I didn’t get anything”
(edited by Swagman.9013)
Kal I’m going to copy this from another thread I posted in but I think it applies here to jump puzzles as well. Please explain to me why you feel the extra reward is necessary.
Please help me understand this. And I’m being serious. Tell me exactly how completing, just completing, these brutally hard dungeons is in no way a reward in of itself? Why is it that after overcoming such a challenge that getting a white item completely negates the hard fought and won battle for you? I’m not being a kitten I want to know.
My entire gamer life has been about the reward of a hard fought and won battle.
When I beat ninja gaiden (for Xbox) on hard there was no thought of a shiny trinket at the end, and it being single player no one was watching. Yet I felt a huge sense of accomplishment for getting through such an unforgiving difficult game.
From contra and street fighter to gw2 explorables just beating these “impossible” challenges is so much fun and rewarding to me that if I got no loot I’d still do it.
Please help me understand the other side of the coin.

No Swagman, the question is: if they reward your 30 min of random killing with 5 blues, 2 greens and maybe a yellow, why don’t they reward your hour of effort beating something hard with more than a blue and some few coins?
What would be the downside of doing it? you prefer having your players killing wolves in a forrest or trying to beat bosses/mazes/instances whatever hard content?
Because a dungeon is RIGHT THERE they tell you HEY COME CLEAR ME I HAVE LOOT. a heart quest pops up on your screen and announces itself to you by having a giant heart on the map.
A jumping puzzle is HIDDEN you GO OUT OF YOUR WAY to find it for, as it was intended, the people who GENUINELY like exploring. Because you watched a YouTube video that told you how to get through it doesn’t qualify you as an explorer, you are reward driven player, the reward for you is the loot chest.
I spent HOURS, literally HOURS in WoW figuring out ways to climb above, under, and behind invisible walls on every map I could. I got 0 loot for doing it, the reward I got was getting there.
I say Anet removes all gear from jump puzzle chests and make them all reward tonics. That way the people who genuinely enjoy taking time away from their “time I could be farming” will continue to do them and be happy, and all the incentive loot driven players can’t complain because they all contain the same thing.
The question is would you still complete these jumping puzzles if there was no chest at the end of them?
If your answer is no then why are you doing them when you know the loot will be disappointing?
If yes then why do you care what loot comes from the chest at all? It’s just icing on the cake for completing a fun challenge.
I’m curious as to how many times you guys normally die in dungeons. A lot of people are talking about how they don’t see dungeons worth the effort cause their repair bill is so high. I still see dungeons as the best source of income especially since choosing different explorable paths or different dungeons lets you avoid any diminishing returns on the completion bonus.
You get a few rares that have a chance to give up to 3 globs, sometimes you get lucky and find an exotic, and the runes and green gear can sell for a few silver each on the TP. Not to mention the orbs and cores you can sell. Plus you get the enjoyment of overcoming the challenge.
I’ve done almost all the story modes and several explorables and I die 1-2 times maybe, in each one. And I play a warrior and not a ranged warrior, I see people also qqing that melee is so hard.
I saw no loot nerfs and no mob buffs, also they didn’t nerf it across the board, if you choose to run the same dungeon repeatedly in under a window of what I would assume is 20 minutes you will see a decline in the end BONUS experience and silver.
If however you choose to do a different explorable path, or a different dungeon altogether THERE IS NO NERF.
They said this was to deter speed farming only. Not dungeoning.
But great way to extrapolate.
No point at all, other than gear, lore, fun. No point other than those… Wait why am I playing an mmo at all
I wouldn’t say rich but I’m around 26g I did obtain it by clearing dungeons at a very fast pace, but not by exploiting and not CoF, believe it or not there is other instances out there and some where the bosses are fairly straightforward to a moderately experienced group.
Oh and grenade kit engineers as I learned yesterday DECIMATE in dungeons, had 2 in my group and they plowed through packs so fast we were completing the run in 11 mins.
/say is the wrong medium especially while questing, a lot of people are in omg I want to see and do everything mode.
/m for map chat will allow you to talk to people who want to converse with you across the entire map.
Being able to clear a dungeon start to finish in roughly 12 minutes netting ~27 silver each run, about 1.5g an hour. You guys knew while running the dungeon that the words “this is too easy” and “how long before they fix this” had to of been said.
The majority of the population is complaining about wp travel costs, and to go from that to 30g in just a few days is unbalanced.
But the token rewards and drops haven’t been changed so they are still allowing you to farm your set gear as fast as you please, you just won’t get rich while doing it. And I’m sure doing these runs is the fastest way to farm orbs and cores which will still net you a tidy profit.
Try the guild subsection of the forums and find an RP guild and join their server.
I’m probably a minority but I chose to take a backseat to damage and provide as much support as possible.
My normal set up is a dual mace shout warrior. I choose dual mace for a few reasons
Your third strike on the main attack applies weakness, this helps mitigate a LOT of damage.
Your number 4 applies vulnerability which helps bring mobs down faster
#’s 3 and 5 are good cc 3 having a very low cd and 5 being aoe.
My traits are

I take missile reflect while blocking improved mace cool downs shouts heal lower shout cd and shouts give adrenaline.
I use for great justice, on my mark, and shake it off for my shouts. I also have all 6 sup runes of the soldier which makes all shouts cleanse a condition (shake it off will cleanse 2)
Work off stacks of defiant on bosses with 3 and 5 save your afrenaline stun for when you know the boss will do a big attack. My basic role is to stop enemies from putting out as much damage as possible.
