So I’ve been doing pvp alot lately. After having mastered the elementalist profession I decided I wanted to try every single profession and play it attleast half-decently and to find the best build for each profession conform to my play-style.

So far:
Elementalist-hybrid, bunker
Engineer-hybrid decap
Necromancer – power DS necro.
Warrior – Condition
Thief – condition
Guardian – bunker, support
don’t have a mesmer yet for lack of character slot.

But I’ve tried ranger…. I have no idea how to play ranger, what build to use, what role to fill… I need help…

I know this will sound shocking in this no skill/mindless spam/carried by class game but its actually about player.
Some classes are better than other of course but when you are looking for people to play with good player on average class will benefit you more than average player on good class.
You want people to be at right time in right place doing right thing not just randomly die all over the map on some OP build.
And even “skill” requirement of classes are BS, its about your dodge/cooldown management/game knowledge/positioning/situational awareness and not about how many fancy tricks your class have, once you master one class you can be decent on any class and great once you get used to that new class.

Agreed, I’d say I’ve mastered the elementalist class ankitten ow trying out every single other profession, just need one more character slot for a mesmer. But really I still have NO idea how ranger could ever work in spvp…. probably because I have yet to learn how to play it.

Seems like you’d enjoy the mightstacking dueling build.
It uses the spellslinger. Since you don’t want the celestial gear I just added in the stat thingies that I tend to go for.

Anet does not develop pvp, just stop suggesting things, I know hope is what last the longest, but it is time to let go : )

Dude…the feature patch. How was that not a massive PvP update?

Not sure if serious, or sarcasm. Feature patch was not aimed towards pvp, it was aimed towards pve crowd, because we lost more than we gained.

We lost:
- Ranks
- Free skin swaps
- 1 crappy map, but still a map
- 1 crappy hotjoin mode (8×8), but still a mode
- PvP only look
- Hope for any decent reward system aimed towards pvp (well at least I did)
- Ability to get bags cheap
- All previous system rewards (glory, crafting parts, etc.).
- The fundamental rule, that everyone is equal in pvp, only skill matters. Since they added traits for $ which pvp people can hardly get.
- Ability to wear all the armor just by entering mists.

We gained:
- More pve pplz in pvp (too bad most of them are so addicted to brainlessly farm, they usually either afk, or better that they would afk in any comp. mode, but still more people are better they just need to learn )
- 1 map only available for $$$
- The ability to retrait less tediously (still could make templates though)
- New reward system that is even more crappy then the previous one, which is quite a difficult thing to say. New reward system gives you things you don’t need in pvp to salvage or sell, to get gold that you don’t use in pvp. Well you didn’t use it, but now gold can buy new traits, wonder if they will make some “slightly” more powerful traits and sell them for gems in the future…

What we should have received:
- WORKING match system preventing 4×5 at start
- Leaderboards that actually is something to reach for
- WORKING mmr system preventing top100 vs less than1000 fights
- More modes that would make pvp fun
- Rewards worth trying for
- A map voting system before comp. match – you know the thing that 90% of pvp games currently have?
- Templates

Gw2 pvp is not being developed, just don’t fool yourself…

GW2 PVP changes were just what it needed. Due to the changes I can now easily get a guild group going because they are all interested in tpvp. They are all interested in making better builds and trying them out. For nearly a year the only things that kept people playing was living story. PvE had grown extremely boring and repetitive after 2 years. I’d say about 50% of our guild now plays pvp daily. We are not the only guild that does that.

Dragon rank is still pretty hard to get. Took me 3-4 months of playing 5-20 matches a day just to get from tiger to Phoenix. 3 days ago we made a EU-server tpvp guild so that people could more easily party up. In 3 days we got 48 members who are all dedicated pvp players.

4/0/2/4/4 celestial, strength runes, sigil of battle, sigil of smoldering, glyph of elemental power is a must. Works for D/D and D/F. I prefer D/F.

4/0/2/2/6 celestial, strength runes, sigil of battle, sigil of doom, glyph of elemental power is a must, works best for D/F but D/D can work as well. This is the standard celestial might stacking build this is done through the trait spell-slinger.

0/2/0/6/6 D/D celestial, strength runes, sigil of battle, sigil of doom, 3 cantrip D/D is and has long been the standard pvp build for elementalist.

0/6/0/4/4 Fresh Air S/D or S/F build works pretty nicely as well.

0/6/2/4/2 Tempest Defense D/F frost bow, arcane power + cleansing fire is deadly.
Once you get the basic frostbow burst rotation down you can beat anything that stays within the frostbow AoE and if you freeze your main target with Frostbow 5 and set it up with Frostbow 2 you can prevent their escape + do extra damage.

0/0/6/4/4 D/F cleric, runes of the grove, sigil of renewal, sigil of water.
Armor of Earth, Cleansing Fire, Glyph of Elemental power (must use in air).
This is the tankiest build I’ve ever had the pleasure of running.

These are all of the builds I’ve been able to use in tpvp. I don’t run Staff and barely ever run scepter. Except for the frostbow build and the fresh air build all of ’m are built for sustain. Fresh Air burst is considered one of the best that the ele has to offer. The Frost Bow build gives the highest damage you can do. (around 2.7k dmg per icicle on the heavy golem or any other heavy armored player).

We could also start talking about Lich form… I betcha that even with a condi spec you can still get the eles health down enough to begin apply conditions on them.
May I also note that the ele has light armor and the lowest base hp in the game. Without our sustained healing and gimmick traits we’re wet noodles.

D/D sPvP woes

From an engi’s POV:

1. (D/D*) Ele is more dangerous when assisting in a small fight, most notably at mid.
2. Ele is always the first to get focused.
3. Ele can’t survive long in a stalemate if they don’t know how to back off, regen/cleanse before coming back in.
4. Ele is more dangerous when their CC is unpredictable.
5. Most of the condi burst will land after the ele cleanses.
6. Ele is good at destroying structure and capping an open node.

which is why I use focus off-hand, the no. 4 in earth and the CC from air and water are stuff people have yet to get used to.

vs Warrior healing signet its underpowered warrior 362hp every 1s vs 202 every cast spell so warrior dont need do nothing and got regen every second we must cast spell so after 2s warrior got 724 healing we got 404 if we casting spell and with Cone of Cold/Drake’s Breath we got healing only on activation for another 3 tick of dmg we dont got healing

Then what do you think of the thief? 220 hp per attack, Dagger auto-attack is 3 times a second applies poison and does pretty good damage. That’s 660 hp per second (with cleric runes, with celestial runes its around 190). If you add in a couple more traits you can up that healing to well over 500 per attack.
I slightly disagree with your note though, The elementalist also has access to near permanent regeneration, soothing mist and a couple healing skills and heal on dodge, atunement swap and with sigils even more heals. We have more than enough access to heals and the signet greatly compliments our already amazing heals.

Thief with cleric’s gear, HA.

Don’t kid yourself, SoM doesn’t compare to HS or SoR when you look at the requirement to make it heal something valuable and not make you anything less than a fly on the battlefield. SoM isn’t that great for thief aside from pve.

Came back to this topic and I see people saying:

- go 0/2/0/6/6
– go hybrid/dps

etc. etc.
I just want to again point out that the elementalist bunker is one of the best bunkers in tpvp. Yesterday I played 5 matches and won nearly every single 1v1 and stalemated nearly every 1v2 and near the end I even did a 1v3 for 5 minutes. Because I kept three of them busy and we had capped the other two points we got back from 470-200 to 500-497. The only reason we lost is because two of the players I was fighting gave up beating me and ran off to different points in the end I beat the third one that decided to stay.
Is this possible with D/D? nope. Plus the Dagger main-hand and the Focus off-hand in fire can still boost your damage alot through might stacking. The no. 4 on focus is one of the longest lasting fire fields and you can probably use every single one of your blast finishers in it during its duration for about 12 stacks of might + an extra flame aura for approximately 5 more stacks of might. Fury you get by atunement swapping.
I have learned that of all the bunkers out there the elementalist does the most damage (mostly due to it being aoe) You can pressure multiple opponents easily and thanks to the focus off-hand and our cantrip utilities we’re able to stay alive for a looooong time.

That’s very cool and all, but this man is just trying to get into PvP and learn the ropes with D/D. This is not the kind of person you would give some revolutionary D/F bunker build. D/D ele is all over the top of the leaderboards so I’d rather give him something solid to begin with.

If you want to advertise your build, make a thread, and advertise it to people who could put it to use. Don’t force it on beginners. D/F is way harder than D/D

Its best to start learning early on but I guess D/D dps would work too since it seems like (s)he’ll be trying to be a roamer.

Help with S/F spvp build

So the other day, I was playing hotjoin, which does nothing more than infuriate me. when I came across a champion magus running an S/F build who literally kitten d me several different time across 3 matches. She used frostbow 5 and 4 to devestating effect. Then I tried my iteration of what her build probably was (zerker ammy, strength runes, and I ran 0/6/2/4/2 for traits) and tried to use the bow on her, but she used earth focus 4 to reflect the frostbow 5 after dodging the icestorm, and then finished me with the firey GS. It was humilating.

I kept playing with this build, and while its burst potential is very good I am very bad at playing it properly because I die if I thief so much as presses F1. I do really like the focuses defensive skills though, but I still need help.

So would it be better to run a more defensive fresh air S/F build with say celestial? Then I’d feel like the damage would fall short.. And are my traits okay?

I’ve got alot of ideas for you but in the end you just need to try out variations of the build you just mentioned to see what fits your playstyle. I’d be leaning towards a Tempest Defense Spell Slinger build to maximize damage output. (doesn’t the 5 on frostbow work well with tempest defense?)

Hi, guys. Since eles got a huge buff from the feature patch, i think guardians have almost no chance to defeat ele in 1v1. In tpvp 1v1 sometimes is important, for example, skyhammer usually require a good 1v1 player to control the cannon…
Ok, lets come back to the topic, as i have watched and tested by myself, i think that currently, meditation or other kind of dps guardian have a very low win rate to defeat eles (DD) as they have so many shields (aura) and dps output while shileding and moving.
So I post this thread to get opnions and ideas about how to improve the win rates of us in duel with eles , especialy dd ones

Have you ever tried playing elementalist? Maybe you’ll have a better understanding and chance at defeating them if you try out the class first. When I went for a dps meditation build beating elementalists was no problem at all. Heal-way guardian can outheal any damage taken from ele too. But a bunker ele will out dps a bunker guardian.

Or you could just have a 2nd set with…any other weapon?…Staff, Dagger, Axe, the lot, all do enough damage to take an ele out of 90%. 10% of an ele’s health is like, not even 2k.

more like 1.2k hp actually… Just wait with your burst after he leaves water, will be a while till he can heal up any major damage after that.

Well I must say that the from all the direct damage bursts I’ve tried out in tpvp the engineers burst-single target is of the highest tier, mostly because of the excessive amount of CC an engineer can do. This works for mobs in dungeons too ya know… Chain CC with turrets perhaps an idea? Combined with its projectile deflection, boons for allies etc… Plus the rifle still does good damage on auto-attack for a ranged weapon. But yea it can’t match the Elementalist Staff’s AoE’s… or Frostbow… Yea in pve the elementalist is definately better at direct damage. PvE condition however, or the confusion, I’m sure there’s uses for perplexity runes. With all the CC, confusion on bomb no.3, pistol no. 3 and more (I got an asura also so…)

With the condition build I used to run I’d use 3-4 death blossoms and some other skills to stack 20+ stacks of bleeding easily and reliably for a pretty good duration.
All that you said is true about death blossom but its base bleed duration and the thing that they are 3 bleeds and not single target makes it quite nice for stacking bleeds.

That’s the problem. It’s great for a condi build but utterly useless for a power build, and hybrid setups still isn’t a thing. So whatever you do, you’ll get useless skills on your bar.

Ah I see, Well I’m running a hybrid celestial build right now with D/D, I use Dagger-3 sometimes but the auto-attack is better and I’d rather save my initiative for other more usefull skills while running hybrid. Like no.2 for the extra damage which you’ll need if y’r running hybrid sustain and dagger no. 5 since stealth isn’t the absolute core of my hybrid build… Dagger no. 4 is pretty useless too in my opinion.

So I’ve been running every single profession ankitten ow exploring the limits to the thief profession… All I can say is that you are horribly wrong. Thief does not do the most damage, is not the most survivable in pvp we can’t even reliably keep a point because our intire class is built around the stealth mechanic that prevents point capture and hold.
Thieves CAN do alot of damage but that’s only when we go full zerker. If any other class went full zerker they’d do the same if not more damage.

Don’t tell me that Thief is a “kill and run away” class.
That’s so unfair.
That’s so cheese like.
There is no way that Gw2 Thief would be like this…it just…makes sense, no?

Sadly that’s how I’ve seen most people use their thieves, I am now trying to explore different builds that don’t force you to hit and run. Have come up with one build so far, its got good-decent sustain damage, healing and condi removal. But I still feel like I’m missing something but need to unlock the new grandmaster traits to see about that.
What do you run for you to say that? Very interested in your reply.

We all start out as noobs.

First I’d like to suggest learning D/F which is in my opinion the most viable weaponset for spvp and tpvp.

Secondly here are two more viable meta builds; tried ’m out both and they work wonders for me:

Might-stacking celestial build:
4/0/2/2/6 <- spell slinger being the main focus.
choose two cantrips and glyph of elemental power
Signet of restoration + Glyph of Elements
Celestial Amulet, Sigil of Battle, Sigil of Doom, Runes of Strength.

Play-style:
You use Glyph of elements in fire for extra burning sustain dps, use dodges and cantrips naturally (don’t spam ‘m just for the might stacks) you’ll get to 25 stacks approximately mid-fight and will by then win nearly any match-up.

Second build:
This is a point holder build (my favorite one).
0/0/6/4/4
The anti-condition grandmaster trait in earth is amazing!
two cantrips and again glyph of elemental power to be used in air for the constant weakness application.
Signet of Restoration, Glyph of Elements again.
Cleric Amulet, Runes of the Grove, Sigil of Renewal + Sigil of Water

Play-style:
You basically try to keep your hp above the 90% to prevent any conditions from being applied to you. This works quite well with the regeneration from cantrips, protection from auras, weakness from glyph of elemental power and your constant signet of restoration heals.
If your opponent is a condition-heavy one you will win hands-down… unless they run away after failing to apply any conditions for 3 minutes :p
This to my experience is by far the strongest bunker build the elementalist has to offer as per example:
First time trying out the build we were teamed up against a group that had 4 people with condition heavy builds Stayed in mid kept point and held all 4 of ’m busy for 6 minutes, then their fifth got off a lucky backstab bringing me below the 90% hp threshold and then the conditions ate me up in seconds, poison and confusion preventing me from healing back up. Then they reported me as a hacker and smacktalked me

I use both these builds with D/F but I figure they should be viable with D/D too but again I really suggest you learn to play D/F, its less mobile than the D/D but its got too many usefull pvp skills to keep using off-hand dagger.

And just in case this happens:
I’m not a noob I’m a 1300 rank 68 Elementalist, 2000 hours total on all professions, I pvp almost exclusively for the past 3 months. But I’m not a pro either

A balance discussion

Focus is now a very well balanced weapon. It used to be extremely clunky, didn’t do any damage, everything was heavily telegraphed and bugged.
I’m sad that they nerfed swirling winds though, it was fun to block treb shots and champs ranged attacks with it, now only the wall of reflection can counter boss’s ranged attacks.

Water no.4 low dmg and low chill duration… But chill is a very nice condition to apply so… Then no. 5 is a good interrupt for preventing stomps, same as no. 5 in air pretty much except it does damage and isn’t single target + its a blast finisher, if you have dagger in main-hand you’ll have two blast finishers in water, so that’s more than you have in earth which might seem a bit strange for folks who first try out this weapon set.

As for fire, fire no.4 is a long duration fire field, lasts long enough to cast all sorts of combos in it, and no. 5 the flame aura has become quite viable since it got buffed to give might. in conjunction with magnetic leap over the flame wall you can keep the flame aura going for quite a long time aka more more might and burning on targets.

i was hoping the patch would nerf all the things about the theif that were brokenly overpowered, sadly this was not the case.

they still can engage and escape without consequence with stealth while 3 to 6 people chase after them looking like fools because they can do nothing to stop them

they still do overwhelming damage to a single target thats broken by comparison to anyone else

they still chase down a target so easily with their constant dagger leaps and high no cooldowns

im aware that this is where theifs usually go to ask eachother how to be more OP so yea bring on the backlash…and dont say that ranger counters stealth…..it doesnt

All that you said is true about death blossom but its base bleed duration and the thing that they are 3 bleeds and not single target makes it quite nice for stacking bleeds.

This is what I currently use I feel like the perma regen and the passive heal from adrenaline and healing signet + the decent armor and base hp keep me alive for a loooong time. I’ve had it outheal a staff zerker elementalist once. Given the dodges, blocks and interrupts you can prevent damage long enough for passive heals to catch up. But it lacks stability and stunbreakers so I was wondering if there is another reliable way to get regeneration.

Also the elite banner is a must since its a rez-build.

I see that it is a condition warrior build, I’ll try it out straight away. Banner gives some decent group support… though I guess with an engineer and healing turret its regen boon would become kinda useless.
Any word on how to use this build?

it still works better than FGS – 4 which I have seen to be also called a burst.

Highest feasible burst is Frost Bow no.2 + no. 4 with arcane power and a whole bunch of damage modifier traits you can kill the heavy golem with just those three skills.

I’m an axe warrior and only reason I use eviscerate is because its a 3-condition removal every 8 seconds since I’m quite tanky, the 2-3k dmg I do with it is just a bonus

This is what I currently use I feel like the perma regen and the passive heal from adrenaline and healing signet + the decent armor and base hp keep me alive for a loooong time. I’ve had it outheal a staff zerker elementalist once. Given the dodges, blocks and interrupts you can prevent damage long enough for passive heals to catch up. But it lacks stability and stunbreakers so I was wondering if there is another reliable way to get regeneration.

Also the elite banner is a must since its a rez-build.

So I made a tanky Warrior focused on regenerating allies, being very very durable and rezzing people up faster than they can get stomped. I’m just still working out which utility skills work best for this. Any suggestions?

Its also so that the glass cannons can continue to do damage while I stomp the others safely.

why use all three? Depending on my mood I pick any of the 7 characters I have. Necromancer when I’m bored, Guardian when I don’t feel like moving around alot and healing alot and engineer when I wanna test my limits because though its one of the toughest professions in the game its very rewarding to play.

What you need to do is find good builds for all three of them, try tanky, dps, condi and hybrid builds on all three of them and figure out which one you like the most.

For necro I like dps, for guardian I use but somewhat dislike tanky and for the engineer I use and enjoy hybrid.

But I main elementalist and am also trying out thief and warrior. Still haven’t gotten the ranger figured out yet and haven’t made a mesmer yet.

So I got an armor set that makes me look like iron man so I was extremely motivated to also learn to play the iron man’s theme on the Marriner’s Horn that I got.
This is what I got so far:
Lowest keys, it sounds kinda funky if you use the middle ones.

Necro lich form, 5.5k dmg every 3/4th second for 30 seconds… This is excluding any damage the minions can do in the process but I think its safe to say you could dps around 7k with it consistently.

But after trying out all sorts of burst builds the highest burst I could achieve was with my engineer. I met but a few that could survive the full burst rotation. But the true power of this burst was that it CC’d the target continually for its intire burst duration and if performed skillfully and quickly enough the target has no time to react at all.

So I’m a rank 65 tpvp player, don’t always team up with my guildies though.
I run multiple classes but for elementalist with 1300/2000 hours is definately my main.

I run:
D/F standard might stacking elementalist with cantrips, runes of the grove, glyph of elemental power (in air or water is a great debuff).

D/W & Staff Power DS necromancer, I do nearly as much damage in death shroud as a normal power necromancer would do in lich form but with more survivability. (weak to cc though)

Pistol/Shield hybrid bomb/elixer gun engineer, condi removal is only half-decent but its passive heals rival that of a healway guardian while still being able to do damage equaling that of the elementalist mightstacker build but then with an aoe-heal to allies.

P/D & D/D condition thief, stacking 25 bleeds in 4 seconds… 2500 dmg per second, is weak against condi removal but the P/D set-up gives decent sustain damage.

Healway standard Guardian with shouts. Terrible damage good heals but low armor and hp.

Tanky shout warrior, ridiculous amount of condi removal, hp and armor. 3555 armor and 30k hp…. its crazy. Plus due to having an axe as main-hand you’re still able to do passable damage.

But of all these professions in tpvp or any pvp I feel like there are some classes that can just confuse their opponents by combining CC (hard and soft CC), mobility and passive healing.
Since the nerf to burst sustain has become more important. The elementalist and engineer both have decent sustain, CC, mobility and can still do decent damage.
The nerf to direct damage burst has also increased the viability of conditions and the importance of condition removal of which both the elementalist has a ton.
Only profession I can think of with better condi removal would be the necromancer (dagger no.4 and staff no. 4 transfer conditions and their heal increases effectiveness based on conditions and DS is a soft counter to conditions).

What the april patch has done is that it made sustain and hybrids more viable in pvp situations. Elementalist is a sustain hybrid due to the passive heals, decent condi removal and the general class mechanic. It used to be lop-sided towards berserker dps in pvp. Everyone ran either tanky or dps and a few condition guys. Elementalist can’t ever max out in any one role due to our class mechanic which is why it always felt sub-par.

either is good and both offer slightly different things depending on one’s preferenced play-style.
Focus is more for those who plan ahead. In both air and earth you can completely negate damage for several seconds plus there’s slightly more condition removal on the focus. Flame aura is better than the frost aura if you want the extra might stacking plus damaging burn. The dps on Dagger for fire is slightly better though so if you wanna be more bursty go Dagger off-hand for sustain and longer duels the focus is better.

The Guardians have the wards, we have the conjured weapons, see the conjured weapons as extra atunements to swap to with a slightly higher cooldown.

Actually a lot of professions have ward-like skills in their asset so it’s not just guardian’s thing.

Hm? A lot of professions have persistent, ground-based AoEs that hamper foes or assist allies, in the way that gw1 Wards and Wells worked – but only Guardians and Elementalists can create impassable terrain – unless it’s not possible to dodge through Spectral Wall? In which case:
Guards have three (Line/Ring of Warding, Sanctuary) two on weapons, one utility
Eles have one (Unsteady Ground) on a weapon
Necroes have one (Spectral Wall) as a utility

Well since I was inspired by GW1 wards I’d go with how they worked. They were stationary pbaoe areas. If you cross them you’d gain their buff, if you leave them you’d lose the buff.

Why not have Stow Pet give your stats a boost so you can do acceptable damage without your pet out. Without having the pet pop up the moment you go in combat.

I absolutely love the engineer and to thing that you can heal up your intire party with minimal investment into healing power is AMAZING!
The number of blast finishers, fields projectiles everything is so freaking awesome!

I main elementalist with 1500 hours on ’m but I feel like the engineer lets you:
1. choose which atunement to bring in the form of kits.
2. the kits are on way lower cooldowns then the atunements allowing for more freedom and a higher skill-ceiling.
3. ya can burst 22k direct damage easy, ya can do viable condition builds at 1500 range, ya can do power builds at 1500 range etc.

There’s just so much stuff that ya can do as an engineer and I’m nowhere near the meta yet :p. I run a bomb-elixer gun set-up. The Healing Turret is the most fun healing skill in the game too. But I’m still trying to figure out how to make the bombs hit for the 7-8k that was reported here. I was already happy with the 2k dmg/sec + the several thousand healing burst and healing sustain party-wide. More than once did I see my party’s health going down but I don’t think anybody got downed throughout our intire CoF run.

don’t see how thats relevant, you played against bad players and didnt get focused even once and it’s already established that necro does well in that situations.
also pls stop walking backwards all the time and clicking skills

I win 90% of my games with this necromancer build. Either the matching system doesn’t work or the build does.
