Dalendria brings up a good point. While I have not yet run into the DR, I’m concerned I might. I’d like to see for myself what people are doing and how they are doing it when they do hit it.

My concern about seeing video evidence is more to see if there is a way to figure out what the triggers are than to downplay what people are saying about it. Telling me what you THINK caused it is again, anecdotal. Showing me what you were doing allows me to make my own observations and conclusions about what caused it to kick in.

I truly don’t understand why or how people can defend this? And, yes.. it seems like you get hit harder the more magic find you have.

For me at least, it’s not defending it. I am simply stating I have not experienced it, and every time I ask someone to show me a video of an example, they don’t answer. So, I understandably have a hard time believing that people being affected a truly playing “normally”.

Prove me wrong.

I’m sorry that the outcry across the forums and numerous examples aren’t enough evidence for you. I’m not sure what motivates your disbelief in your fellow players. I speculate that the reason you have not received photo or video evidence is because someone who is dealing with the frustration of this issue is likely not in the mood to go out of his or her way for someone with your attitude. Moreover, the developers have access to the DR logic, database and logs, which combined with detailed user accounts is likely enough information to work with.

I respectfully request that we keep this thread to it’s original purpose and avoid potentially derailing posts that are accusing players of lying or abusing the game.

It’s not enough for two reasons:

First, with someone describing what they have run into, it’s just anecdotal. There is no review of the evidence. Second, I have not run into the issue, and I truly, honestly would just like to know what’s different about how you all are playing the game, and how I am. That’s all.

Why is it so much to ask for video evidence that can be reviewed and discussed?

Its hard to do video proof, as videos take up way more memory space than a simple picture (those are out there btw, even on this forum, you just have to look).

I have looked. Perhaps my search skills are lacking. If you could give me a link to one, that’s be awesome! thanks.

Why does the game only let me play for 20 minutes?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Tallenn.9218

I’d love to see a youtube video of someone playing the game “normally” and still hitting diminishing returns. Whenever there’s a thread like this, it’s natural to wonder what exactly the person making the complaint is doing “wrong” or what actions they’re taking that are triggering DR.

My point being, showing a video of someone playing normally/reasonably and then having their gameplay wrecked by diminishing returns 20 minutes into it would definitely gain some support for the supposed problem fairly easily.

Otherwise, without some sort of visual proof you’re probably going to leave people feeling unsympathetic because they’re picturing you gaming the system in some ridiculous manner (and getting bitten back by it).

Just a suggestion.

Pretty much this.

I won’t come right out and say you’re lying when you say, “I’ve been playing normally and hitting diminishing returns”. I’m just asking you to PROVE IT. Post a video (without parts cut out) showing “normal” game play with DR being triggered. I would really, REALLY like to see that.

I have not seen these diminishing returns in MY “normal” gameplay, so I’m really curious what’s different about YOUR normal gameplay that causes it to trigger.

AFAIK (so don’t take my word for it, test with small amounts first), there is no charge for ending a buy order. Not so for sell orders of course- you lose your 5% listing fee when you post something for sale, so it’s gone whether the item sells or you eventually remove the listing.

If it were me, I’d place a reasonable buy order and just leave it there why continuing to farm more cash. You never know when there might be a sudden increase in the numbers available (that’s the nature of random numbers), and you suddenly find your order unexpectedly filled. Don’t just hope for the best, be prepared in case it happens.

This is essentially the opposite of Freelancer’s “buy high, sell higher” method of manipulating a market (i.e. sell low, buy lower). Check out the Tales of Tyria podcast on youtube for details.

It is not sustainable for a long period of time, but CAN be used to get deals in the short term. A market will not sustain an abnormally low price over the long run.

Trading Post: Listing Fee and Selling Fee

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Tallenn.9218

Tallenn.9218

The fees have nothing to do with why you can’t make money by crafting.

The reason is that there is no barrier to crafting; therefore, anyone who wants to can craft. Because of this, there are many times more people able to craft than the market can support. Why pay 4 gold for an exotic item when you can craft it yourself for 3 gold?

On the flip side, why spend the time and money to raise crafting when you can buy an exotic item for 3 gold AND sell the mats to make the same item for the same 3 gold?

Note: the amount of 3 gold was taken from the OP’s post. I’m aware that most exotic items sell for much less than that. The point is the same, regardless of the actual amounts. This is also the same reason why the mats to craft these things cost what they do. I.e., everyone wants to level crafting, so there is a demand for crafting mats.

Put succinctly, there is a larger demand for crafting mats alone than there is for crafted items that use those mats, and it is because there are many more people able to combine those mats than the market can support. It would not matter if the selling fee were 50%, 15%, 5%, or 0%. The issue with selling crafted items would be exactly the same.

I’m not sure what you guys are doing to trigger the so called anti-farming code, but let me just put my results from killing the same 8 alpine skelks in Frostgorge Sound.

I tracked the tier 5 crafting mats, tier 6 crafting mats, and rares in 15 minute chunks, and farmed for 1 hour and 15 minutes.
The results are in the format:
a-x-y-z
where a is the number of the chunk, 1-5, x is the number of tier 5 mats, y is the number of tier 6 mats, and z is the number of rares. I had some magic find but not a huge amount, and lost 40% of it (eating buff) after the first hour.

1-4-2-0
2-4-1-1
3-7-2-0
4-12-5-1
5-9-0-0

Easily within the streakiness of a random number generator.

So what are you doing to trigger the anti-farming code? I’m killing a limited number of the same spawns, and doing it for way more than the 1/2 hour described. Are you farming far more mobs or something?

Kiting vs. well uh... Not Kiting

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Tallenn.9218

I typically use melee on my warrior unless I’m fighting too many mobs or fighting a champion mob.

The DPS advantage to melee is significant (and most melee weapon auto-attack skills for the warrior are AoE), but of course I take more damage. I can generally kite several mobs with my rifle, killing them one at a time without much risk (unless there’s not much room and respawn is fast), but if I can handle the damage, I can kill them tons faster with my sword.

I feel it’s a pretty good balance of risk vs reward.

How much Gold do you have?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Tallenn.9218

Right now, I have about 3.5 gold, but I usually spend it as I make it. I’ve spent more than 15 gold gearing up, and I’m only about half in exotics, so I’ve got a bit to go yet.

I’ve also spent a bunch on crafting- not on buying mats on the TP, I haven’t really spent much on that. I’ve spent quite a lot on needed vendor mats (threads and so on). The biggest expense by far though has been not selling the mats I used to raise crafting.

RNG is random.

For example, last night I was farming skelks in a high level zone. There would be times when I’d get absolutely no loot at all for 6, 7, or more mobs in a row, and other times I’d get potent blood 3 times in a row (some times AFTER the streaks of zero drops).

You need a really big sample size to account for randomness. In other words, probably at least 30 sessions worth of farming longer than the anti-farm code is rumored to exist.

Hmm cindas if you lost it because of their maintenance you might have a chance. Otherwise…. I feel for you man.

The other evening, I pressed “Trade” for gold to gems and it gave me a red bold error message. No gems and no gold taken. I had all my gold until after the TP came back up. After it came back up, my gold vanished and still this morning I have 0 gems.

I took a screenshot, but I am 100% certain they will not resolve the problem. Infact, even if they did, that would create a new problem of not being consistent with their message to others that have lost items.

I am done playing this game. It has way too many bugs. Guilds bugged, personal story bugged, spvp traits corrupt, DE/SP getting stuck, and now it simply takes your gold away from you that took you almost a month to play for . . . shrug their loss, not mine.

I had the same thing. Clicked Buy, and got an error. It’s not that it didn’t do anything. It actually gave me an error, so I clicked Buy again. Again, got an error. I tried closing the TP and reopening, re-searching for the item When the TP came back up, I had no item a 3rd time, same error. The TP went down for maintenance about 10 minutes later. When it came back up last night, there was nothing in my pick up window, and my inventory showed 70 silver, where I have more than 5 gold the night before. The item I was trying to buy was about 2g 50.

List fee = 5%, taken immediately. non-refundable
sell fee = 10% taken when item sells.

So, if you cancel a listing, you’re out the 5%, but not the 10%. If the item sells, it cost you a total of 15% of what you sold it for. Example:

You list something for exactly 1 gold. You pay 5 silver at the time of listing. When the items sells, you get 90 silver. Your total take on the sale is 85 silver.

The official response is in the thread mentioned above. This is what he said:

While we understand the want for P2P trading, we feel that the Trading Post works well for accomplishing fair deals and keeping individual users protected from those with less-than-pure-intentions.

Again, while we know that the majority of players would use a P2P system within its intended design, creating they system may place the global economy at risk, as well as some players.

A COD mail system is just another P2P system. They don’t need to address every possible way that players could trade player to player. They don’t want to allow one because it “may place the global economy at risk”. I believe they don’t mind the current mail system, and even state that you can report scammers, because the way it is now, it won’t be heavily used for trading. I’m sure that if it turns out that people DO start using it heavily for trading, they will take steps to stop that.

To the OP: if you are running into people that don’t “trust you”, you can simply take the first step, and trust them. YOU be the one to send first. Your only other option is to use the trading post, and that is exactly how Arena Net wants it.

OR…

You could buy a set of rare gear for a few gold (generally 20-50s each), then replace it with exotics as you have the gold/karma.

That is what I’m currently doing. It took me only a couple of days to get a full set of rares, including 3 weapons (but not including jewelry- most of that is still greens, but I am not having any difficulties). In the week since, I have converted two pieces (weapons first) to exotics.

It should be noted that I absolutely suck at farming, so it make take a while, but I wanted to reiterate that in rare gear, I have very little issues killing mobs my level.

Most people will be able to farm enough gold/karma MUCH faster than I have been in order to get full exotics.

in Crafting

Posted by: Tallenn.9218

Tallenn.9218

The only way to make crafting a viable way to make money in any game is to put severe barriers to it, so that only a small percentage of players actually does it.

If everyone can do it, then just about everyone WILL do it. As it stands, the number of people that just want to buy crafted gear are vastly outnumbered by the number of people that want to craft. As a result, almost everyone wants crafting materials, while almost no one wants crafted goods (because they can make them themselves). Mats have higher demand than supply, thus prices are high. Crafted good have higher supply than demand, thus prices are low. Taken together, cost to make an item > price of item. This will never change until the vast majority of the player base becomes non-crafters, which will be never.

Due to exploits in the first couple of days, they have disabled the ability to sell or salvage items bought with karma.

I’m hoping they will eventually turn it back on, once they’ve figured out how to make sure things are prices so that they can’t be exploited.

I doubt they will though. They don’t want any reliable way to turn karma into gold. It’s a shame to end up throwing away otherwise useful gear that you’ve simply out-leveled or found a replacement for, but I’m not sure how they could allow you to do something useful with it, with allowing people to trade their karma for gold.

As I understand it, you CAN still put them in the Mystic Forge, but you’d need 3 other comparable items to be put in there with them.

Third party gold marketing Vs Black Lion Trading Co

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Tallenn.9218

Tallenn.9218

I have to wonder how many people are actually purchasing gold from third party sellers. It’s hard to believe it’s really that much.

In game currently (just checked a few minutes ago), you can get 1 gold for $4.86. I’ve seen advertising for as low as $2.50 (I think- I don’t really read that carefully before I report and block them, but that sounds about right).

So, you CAN save money by buying from third party sellers, but by doing so, you take a couple of pretty significant risks.

The first is getting hacked. It’s not even a little bit of an exaggeration to say that most of those companies use hacked accounts to farm and advertise their gold sales. A good portion of those hacked accounts are hacked by means of some malicious software(i.e. keylogger) that potential gold buyers picked up by visiting the gold seller’s web site.

The second and no less important is the risk of being caught and banned. From a strictly financial point of view, you’d need to buy at least 25 gold before being caught to make up for the risk of losing the $60 for your account. However, since if you are caught an banned, you’d also lose all of the gold you had bought that way, making the risk actually infinite. There’s also the issue of losing all of the progression you’ve made aside from the gold you bought.

Given the risks, I find it difficult to believe there are really that many people who haven’t considered them, or that have ignored them, and used 3rd party gold sellers. There just can’t be enough buyers to make it worth it for the sellers, can there?

If anyone reading this is considering buying from a 3rd party seller to save a little money, please consider all of the risks before you do so. Not only could you lose all of the progress you’ve made on your characters, but you could also lose all of the gold you bought, as well as the cost of the game. Do the smart thing, and buy your gold through the gem store.

I ran into this issue this weekend, but on the buy side. It was annoying, but it is short term.

Eventually, the market (on popularly traded items at least) will get to a point where the sell orders are lists at almost exactly 15% over the buy orders. They will fluctuate some, but the spread should remain relatively consistent. Once that happens, making 1c differences won’t happen regularly.

Just give the market some time to stabilize.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I don’t have any issues with melee as a warrior. I switch off between ranged and melee for boss fights, moving in and out as necessary, and rarely go down.

And there is a considerable dps advantage to melee. When soloing, I can see clearly how mobs last easily twice as long against ranged attacks as they do against melee. I typically only used ranged while soloing if I need to kite (or just feel like it).

Now, melee is at a disadvantage in WvW, but only because the closer you are to the enemy, the easier it is to get swarmed. But again, that’s why you have weapon swap.

While there will always be apologists, there is one objective measure that can’t be denied. The purpose of a trailer is to generate interest and ultimately sales for the product in sufficient quantities to justify the cost of making and showing the trailer.

This trailer without question has failed to do that. It may have been a “calculated” risk, but if that is the case, then I think someone forgot to “carry the one”.

I really REALLY love GW2, and have hardly been away from it outside of work and sleep, but I have to ask regarding this trailer: “what the kitten were you thinking?”
