There is something to be said about shapes and if these were defined to have meaning. Image a tag that indicates havoc versus main tag. Would make it easy for the lead commander to understand where the havoc groups were working or a tag that a scout could flag when they were trying to pinpoint an open wall or enemy force.

First off, i love the desert borderlands. i think hat they are a great change of pace from the “run around on flat ground and move as one zerg”. I love seeing changes that require me to think, plan and risk kitten. i love that i can take an objective with just me and a few friends but it takes zergs forever to take an objective. Everything that the dessert borderlands stand for is small team engagements. i love seeing zergs get run over because they ran though a choke point. i love that i had to breakdown a barricade. everything that the new maps had were mechanically pleasing. from the lords being pve bosses, to the creative way the maps are designed. i hate the alpine borderlands and its a shame that so many players love such a boring map.
for all of you wvw players that look at this post i want you to visualize… just in case you didn’t know, if you lose you keep on eternal battlegrounds, you lose all 4 of the towers around it due to siege from inside of that keep that was just taken. you cant fight back because they just took it and the objectives are close enough to each other to hit with catapults from the INNER wall. that’s right, they took your keep and now you have to fight past 2 walls to even contest it.
now for all of you older players, i want you to look at the bay objective in the alpine borderlands. there was a place that you could place CATAS from the south OUTER and hit inner without risk. im putting ephasis on these words because it needs to be said that they used 80 supply instead of the intended 160 supply that it should have taken to take a KEEP.
these placements might as well be called exploits and they are imbalanced from a commander perspective. if i come from that same objective from the north i costs me that 160 supply, but if im willing to risk my team for a better placement and better use of supply i can attack it from the south. but the other team just walks up from the south without risk to do the same thing i risk myself for.Story summed up? the desert borderlands dont have OP placements, they dont have boring landscapes, and they dont have stupid ruins that have no impact on the game.
im trying to point out that the new maps are way better than the old maps and players are scared that learning something new is going to be too difficult. all of my points are things that i see. and im a guy that likes a little strategy to his open world pvp. and I dont like seeing things taken out that remove the need for a brain.
+1. Agree. At least they are planning on rotating but would be even better if both could be available all the time since there are people that like one or the other and some both. Never limit variety, it leads to people leaving a game mode.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
Have to go with a no here. People are complaining that we need more WvWers, this would just remove people from the game mode.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
I had the same concern as you last night, but it is the top item on the login screen in game right now so that is something. But still recommend spreading word in game as well. Now maybe one of those event stars like we see for ESL announcements also would help.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
I admit I wish the cross map chat was part of the scoring group since it would help quite a bit, but there is more bang for the buck in the other group.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
Yeah this usually happens to me when I get knocked down while trying to dodge or stun break or maybe just after. When it happens on ele I have to reset to fix it. Nothing will work. I can use all skills but can’t move or jump. Really annoying in the middle of a big fight.
When it happens on reaper I can usually clear it up with a movement skill.
Are you doing an emote? That usually clears it.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
I think they said until we can replicate it in a pattern they have a really big issue in IDing this one.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
I think that Anet has a problem understanding the scale of some things. At the moment they are selling a single shared inventory slot in the gemstore for 700 gems. What am I going to do with one shared inventory slot?
Oh they get it. They give you on for free and then next you know you buy all ten. Now why would you. Simple its cheaper to do that then buy multiple copies of convenience items like Salvage-o-matics and Royal Terrace passes and the like. Not to mention if you get any of the permanent contracts, or if you are WvWer with all your siege.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
I don’t think that people won’t play on DBL weeks, they’ll just go someplace else while waiting out the EB queue.
Hey said it before, you don’t queue for EB on ABL weeks and we won’t queue for EB on DBL weeks and all is good.
or give us 4 distinct maps and we all have fall over options.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
I wonder if theres any statistics of how many precursors players have missed over the years.. would I wanna know that?
lol, this is one of those that should never be known for one’s own sanity.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
Agree so far, if you just look at fights and/or server queues which then equate to fights its successful.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
It’s not going to be scrapped. It’s going to rotate in and out with Alpine. They are not doing away with it.
At least that is the last I read about it.
That is what Ive heard too but i dont think it is a good solution to using the map. If the 2 borderlands rotate then people who dislike dbl will only play on alpine weeks and vice versa. Anet would only need to balance so each spawn is equal in distance to the nearby towers and keeps.
or have 4 unique maps as others have posted. All maps in play all the time then.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
Not sure I saw a nerf on this one. Could be being distratced by reward chests to be fair. And to agree with the above, you did go thru your older toons and converted the older heroics to your wallet versions yes? Had a guild mate that didn’t know about this and had a lot stacked up on a toon that already had their unlocks.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
Admit, would prefer to see more “betas” before we get to the next season since seasons usually lock down development, and while we have the attention would prefer to keep it versus creating a locked in stone version. But that’s just me.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
Thanks TorquedSoul, will be interesting to see this versus results at the end of the week.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
It is large enough that you could drop a center keep in the Oasis though. It would make a good three sided map. If in doubt on distances then just give whoever is ranked number #1 the farthest run to that central keep.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
Maguuma is pretty well known for busting zergs much bigger in size than them, so idk wtf your talking about.
lol, said no other server ever. Thanks needed a laugh for the afternoon. Mag is well known, if there is one enemy player mag will send 6, if there are 6 enemies mag will send 24. That is known I agree.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
to this end, I would suggest the third map set would be…..
UNDERWATER!!!
You ambition is awesome so +1. Concern here is that they have a long way to go to balance underwater. I think they will need to get there at some point since they story line leads in that direction with one of the Dragons.
That said, I wouldn’t have high hopes until we see a successful return of a water map in sPvP. The reason for this being it would be an ideal test bed if skills can be created and balanced. Once we see that then we will be closer to see more options for WvW.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
take your rant somewhere else
k thx bye
Ah, no.
I support them where they deserve, defend at times when needed and people may not be looking at both sides, but this is one where they didn’t deserve. There was an auto-loot in options for years. It didn’t actually auto-loot. Its should have. On top of that they had people grind out the masteries, since we were given auto-loot, and then it still didn’t auto-loot in WvW. Happy people are happy but, call it a bug fix versus saying its a new feature masked by having to spend WvW ranks on it since that is what it is.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
Like he change to Skyhammer, what Skyhammer actually did took a while to figure out since we could still see the old control platform so first bit amde us think that we needed to reach that, which couldn’t be done.
Like the new ramps and jump points. Only one that seems to an issue is the one under the B capture point. Something is off on it and often results in the player not making it back thru the opening but instead bouncing off the lower area roof.
Overall good change, +1.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
Didn’t dislike it before and its shinning even more with higher numbers.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
I might normally agree with you, but take into the consideration the following:
- We don’t know how much of the queues were open prior to merge, ANet might but we don’t.
- Neither the players or ANet could predict how many people might return if there were more people to fight, and if they will stay. Fights beget fights.
- Old fashion supply and demand, queues lead to more people wanting to play. Before they could leisurely come and go since there was space, now they either value that time more and go and stay or risk not being able to get back to where they were. People are weird but we are like that.
- Queue times seem to have been welled received, at least among forum posters which though seemed shocking, it still remains.
- This has been stated as a test, which can be appreciated since ANet has found small scale tests are not always a good basis for bigger changes, so +1 there.
- There are a good number of fights right now, and PvP is out of season. This means people that might have been working on PvP ranking are free to find fights elsewhere while they wait for Ranked to be re-openned. WvW has plenty right now.
- We don’t know how much the other changes are impacting the WvW participation. A lot of people are trying new change out, will that keep people in WvW, will have to see. Now granted reward changes were a largerly requested change so that is at least partially impacting things.
And that’s just a few variable without stopping to think of more before typing. Now, considering those unknowns until they get more stats on how the server is doing with just these variables I can’t fault them for not upping the caps until they can get a few more numbers in. – Good hunting!
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
So far only queues in our GH+FoW server are on EB, even at prime time BL maps are still usually queue-free. Adding more maps… I dunno.
Agree that is the biggest issue, don’t have the stats to say if this is feasible or not and couldn’t blame ANet for wanting a month or more of numbers before changing things again since it would be too small a sampling.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
Yeah, but you are telling me you are happy to have to have 2 Masteries to do this with? Why wasn’t auto-loot already working from the Mastery that was added. Why was a separate WvW track added for this? Call a spade a spade, this was a cope out. We do need more options to use WvW ranks for, but this should already have worked and now adds some ill will versus good will.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
Alpine Borderlands will be rotated back in with the next release (not hotfix.)
Tyler, is it safe to assume when it is rotated back in that we might get more information on what the rotation plan is at the stage for the people that like DBL? – Thanks!
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
There is a lot of people who love the home borderland concept… Why do you want to remove that ? You have EB for the 3 side map, don’t touch our home border…
Have to admit, we have now seen EB draw the most people consistently over many years. Be that when ABL was in place as well as when DBL was introduced. To me that means there are things that make it a more desirable map. People have offered multiple reasons why that might be. Some of those are because of equal footing and more potential cap points which both might mean higher odds of multiple-sided fights. Those three alone make some of us wonder what then would happen if all maps were equal footing versus favoring a side. I was once a home vs EB person as well but those people are in the minority based on pure numbers in ques. So if that is the case, why do we have 3 maps of a type that is queued for less versus more of the type that queued more. 2 cents.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
I eagerly await the day we have three separate Borderlands maps — alpine, desert, forest — and we can choose to play whichever whenever.
This. 4 distinct maps would go a long way.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
So for all the peeps that want ABL back, how about you stay out of EB while ABL is out since you will have 3 maps already yes?
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
If KS is suppose to pierce and GF AOE, then up the AOE range.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
Yeah, good bye good party assist, hello selfish ability. Its not making the cut. Gave it a week, its not good in this form. You pull people and the person about to stomp them just turns in mid air and stomps them anyway.
So…what new skill do we want to replace this ability with? Ideas? Pet runs around allies in 1200 foot range and drops med packs and anitdote potions? Saint Bernard animation maybe?
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
EB DBL ABL Eotm
+1. 4 3 sided maps.
I don’t mind the OP’s idea that much but it might get stale as well like ABL did, so would prefer variety.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
Interesting. I am still in favor of 4 unique 3 sided maps. That said you made me wonder. What if there were 7 or 8 maps in the current match ups?
So right now we keep only the larger populations home BLs. What if instead we could have traveled to those three server matches or the other 3 server match up maps. So my home borderland needs a hand, people from the other server can travel there to assist and are flagged as my server. They need help and I port there, I am flagged as their server. Now on this example we could be also have 2 EBs, same rules apply. I am on their EB that is part of their 3 server match I am flagged as them, they are assisting ours, they are flagged as us.
Question is with the queues, do we have enough people for this? But if you think about then both servers have their identities, numbers can be bolstered and there are plenty of maps for all. Would require a slight switch to the UIs. Allow people to work together or not as they will, deals with server ID issues and queues, and expands the battlefield and therefore strategic options to which one to be on.
Thoughts?
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
The alpines small strategic chokes were good for LoS’ing and making your escape,
The only way you escaped in ABL was if you were faster or could port. Been small group and solo roaming on ABL and its much easier to get away from the zerg. Its also easier for a solo person to turn the odds on a group when chased into some of the chokes and chasms. Also if you pick off peeps from the enemy zerg there are much harder pressed then they were in ABL to get back to the zerg. Which is what the players were asking for prior to HoT, a way to spilt up the zerg or allow smaller groups better odds of thinning them out. And all of those nooks means more places for roamers to hunt the zerg and draw some versus all out. On ABL full zergs would turn to chase a small group, now they don’t know what they might find.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
+1 here, but already in favor of no home borderlands but 4 3 sides maps with variety to each. With work, ABL and DBL can both become 3 sided maps and EoTM is also a 3 sided maps. Add EB and we are good to go. But outside of that, yes always side on the side of more variety versus less.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
The alpine map was fun as hell when it was queued. You’d usually see some pretty epic keep battles without any random nonsense (like fireballs being shot out of the walls) getting in the way.
Not saying they weren’t fun at times. They were small and grew stale because the fights always occurred in the same spots because they were small. And if they didn’t they were 30-60 feet from that other spot. And they were terrible for havok and roamers since it was very easy for the zergs to run them down.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
OMG… did you say a Q? Wow, Alpine would never hold a Q right? /s
Yes… because Alpine was never Q’d before? Because Alpine wasn’t the map used for three seasons??? Please gtfo with such nonsense.
Its apples to oranges. Did ABL have map queues in 2013, yes. 2014, not really. Now we are also in a different situations with the combined servers so its more like 2013. So yes, we had map queues on home in 2013 and again on home in 2016. So…what does that imply. EB always out queued both so stop fooling yourself. Also if DBL was that hated, they wouldn’t have been queued since people wouldn’t have been on them.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
Odd, I found the alpine had a lot more room around most objectives for fighting with 1 or 2 good choke points nearby.
Take the southern towers for example, SW you had the bridge, the arena looking ruin behind it, the entrance to SW camp nearby for chokes, but plenty of space around it. SE tower was much the same, a couple good chokes and small terrain variations to help outmaneuver your opponents but still a lot of open space along side it.
The ABL favored the blob. Hold the south and you could block entry into the maps. Map strongly favors the zerg over havok or solo roamers. No room to maneuver or fall back to if being attacked by larger force.
It’s mote anyway, they have said they will rotate maps. So we will end up rotating people in and out of EB depending on what the home borderland is. Just don’t block the EB queue while its not your map preference and vice versa.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
Unless we were defending home bl, EB always queued first. And even then, if it was Tuesday or later in the week, EB always queued first.
kitten, EB always queued first, don’t let people try and say otherwise.
….do they not have the same population limit? The same number of objectives? Even though the DBL is substantially larger the alpine still has more open space around objectives for fighting. Only thing the DBL has is a lot more wasted space.
Its the size, the ABL were terribad if maxed out like we saw this weekend.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.

ABL would have been WAAAAYYYY to small for this beta test. DBL were all queued as well and showing why they were mad to be this size.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
Have to agree with above, the damage reduction ok, but not the pierce. Without the pierce any class with pets can not easy hide in it own masses.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
1200 range and a 90-120 cool down would have worked as well.
Or better, no change at all for PvE/WvW, and whatever the mob requests for sPvP since it’s only a problem there.
That would get confusing if they acted differently in different game modes.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
If you image two spectrums, burn on one side and bleed on the other. Why couldn’t chill have played that middle duration role. So it wouldn’t be a quick burst that burn was and not the low and slow that bleed was either. For all classes give chill a base damage and then allow the necro to specialize into it to increase that base.
Now there are also secondary impacts on removing it since other traits/abilities that do things like +1% damage per condi, additional torment per condi and others also had synergy with it. Not to mention condi clears.

Wasn’t key farming done away with? how do you still key farm?
Sadly yes, that’s now the slowest way to gain them at once per week per account. But there are other sources like PvP reward tracks, now WvW reward tracks and such.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
How do you farm all ofthese? Opened 250 boxes? Hell guys tell me how to get keys !
Easy. Make gold, convert to gems/keys during off period, do key runs once per week and buy some gems every once in a while if you saved cash from other sources or want to support ANet.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
For some, golds in game value is its conversion to gems and how it might improve or increase that accounts value via conversion back and fourth.
De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum.
How do you farm all ofthese? Opened 250 boxes? Hell guys tell me how to get keys !
People who open 250 boxes didn’t likely farm the keys, they bought them either with cash or converting in game gold to gems.
Yes.
Opened 250 because I do all three methods. Key farmer, gold conversions and cash. So I am ANets target market since I will get and gift some via cash. I get what I can in game, convert gold and buy some via cash. Keys are or at least were a type of end-game content. Make gold to convert to gems and then buy keys. Its a cycle that keeps people engaged. Its like Fractals, the goals of fractals is more fractals. Keys are or were the same. You convert gold to keys to make more gold to get more keys. But when they alter patterns then they should consider people will devalue those items and expect less demand.
