Viable PvP staff build

However, if you read my post again, I was referring to power/crit based nuker staff ele which doesn’t perform well in conquest mode due to the requirement of standing inside a small circle and fighting head on which clearly isn’t how a zerker staff ele should be played to its full potential.

My apologies, I misunderstood.

Rate this staff build for Dec10 patch

ThiBash.5634

You mentioned might stacking in the original post. Trying to might stack with staff is ridiculous; it’s like trying to out-condi-dmg a necro as an ele. It’s a fool’s errand.

It’s not impossible, just a little different. If you’re stacking, chances are high you’ll have more blast finishers from your team anyway, so it’s debatable whether the extra blasts from scepter will do all that much. You’ll probably hit the cap with staff too.

EDIT: In PvE, you do not need Blasting Staff. But if you want it for some reason, it is getting moved down to Adept, so you can go 30/10/10/10/10.

Blasting Staff increases the damage from Meteor Shower because your target will get hit by more meteors. Seeing as how it’s staff’s biggest hitter by far, it can be worth bringing Blasting Staff just for that.

what kind of staff build will work for fractals?

It depends on what the upcoming changes will throw at us. But rest assured, you can do well with a staff in fractals for the simple reason that it can do a little bit of everything. The weapon is very flexible so there’s rarely a situation where you cannot at least make due. Your big trump card will be Meteor Shower, because it can clear out a lot of thrash at once, but also do a lot of damage to bosses (which are mostly stationary). Static Field and Unsteady Ground are good for breaking up thrash spikes (like the warriors all charging at the same target in the Ascalonian fractal). For the most part though, you’ll have to learn the fractals and their mechanics. Builds are of secondary importance. Most staff builds found on these forums can be used in fractals and be effective, if not always optimal.

Is my armor still viable?

in Elementalist

Posted by: ThiBash.5634

ThiBash.5634

For Anierna, there is only Zerk/scholars & ascended zerk trinks/weps. So your current armor is still sufficient.

Made a slight alteration to your statement.

You’ll do just fine with PVT. It gives you some room for making mistakes, and not going down everytime a critter looks at you funny. Once you get the hang of dungeon mechanics, and feel you are ‘overprotected’, then you can start to swap in some more damage gear.

Yes, zerker will be faster, but PVT is more forgiving…and probably a better choice if you’re not a diehard (ele) player.

Or you could wait for ascended armors.

That’s an excellent suggestion. Ascended armor is expected before the end of the year (the items are already in the game, you just can’t get them yet). So it’s probably more efficient to just wait for that.

Something about this build still doesnt add up. I just ran the build with settlers amulet w/ carrion. Theb tried both undead and nightmare runes.

Results were better but the level of damage was still nowhere close. In the video we see him condition down a warrior from full hp to dead with only burning and some 6 stacks of bleeding in s fee seconds. I cant get anything close to that to even tickle most enemies.

Also its still glassy. 14k hp and 3k toughness, but still get 1 shotted by theives and destroyed by warriors. Yet in the video we watch him tank a warrior with only magnetic aura and regen up. And his health never drops below 3/4.

So still not seeing how this works.

The best I can make out of it is that he’s not just focusing on the conditions, he’s also hitting relatively solid with the rest of his attacks. Combined with his excellent positioning, he seems to constantly lure targets into his AoEs. Stuff like Ice Spike may seem weak, but it actually hits like a truck…provided you can actually hit something with it. As for the defense, he again makes excellent use of positioning. It seems like he’s always behind a target, making it impossible for them to attack him.

To me it seems the key to making this buildwork lies in how he moves and where…which he does pretty well. But to be honest, his targets seem a bit easy to fool too. Guess the ele’s rep works to his advantage.

TLDR: staff ele still sucks in general.

Funny how you can make such a general statement in a thread that shows a player doing well with a staff in 1v1. It’s the staff weakest area, and you still have WvW and dungeons where it performs much better than in duels…I’m guessing you just don’t like it?

@ zelyhn: you’re right about the local of the discussion. I’ll copy the posts I made here into your guide’s thread. I’m not angry exactly; just confused. why would a smart guy like you use such a bad build? it just doesnt make sense. but we’ll talk about that in you4 thread

I think the main issue is that you focus primarily on your own dps, whereas Zelyhn looks beyond that and also values both offensive and defensive group support. Also, judging from his posts, he’s spent quite a bit of time researching and trying things that others don’t. You on the other hand, seem to narrowly focus on builds given to you by someone else and only look at raw damage output from your own character in optimal target dummy situations.

Really feel 4 u elem luvas, just happy I’m not one right now…

Any change to the trait was actually a buff, because:

1) Most elemenalist don’t stay in a single attunement for extended periods of time.
2) Most elementalist builds had permanent acces to swiftness, which gives a +33% speed increase, meaning the old trait was weaker even at full power.

I’m sorry to read that you’re not happy, but judging by what you wrote, you have a lot more to discover in this game. Especially about elementalists. Try out some of the tactics listed on this forum, and get your ele to 80. I’m sure you’ll love it by then.

Guess the playerbase is split between ‘absolute junk’ and ‘the best ever’.

Personally, I’m in the latter category. Rather than complain about the issues, I’ve decided to specialize in the elementalist and make sure that, even if I’m subpar on paper, I’ll at least be optimal in what I do. So far, everytime I thought I hit a ceiling, it turned out the answer was I was doing something wrong (or not well enough). Playing the underdog did wonders for my abilities as a player and I am now confident that I can compete with the other professions. I’m certainly not dragging down my team, not even in sPvP. And if anything, beating a thief 1v1 with a staff ele (a supposedly impossible thing) is extra sweet.

Not boon duration runes, that much at least is clear. I’m watching the video in detail to see if anything special triggers that might help in identifying the runes. He could be using any set of condition damage runes though.

Edit: My best guess would be Rune of the Nightmare, because in the fight against the Engineer and the Thief, the Thief seems to run off for no reason. The runes would also fit his build being all conditiony. So if I had to guess, I’d say he’s using those.

It’s tricky yes, and it starts to get even more complex when you start combining various skills on different attunements. It’s not something you can really learn from the forums, my advice is to just stick with the ele for a while. Practice makes perfect, and you’ll have to develop your own style.

The key thing is to combine stuff though. Wheter it’s combo fields and finishers, swapping for boons or just skills that work well together. You gotta use it all if you want to win.

Who is the easy target ?

in Elementalist

Posted by: ThiBash.5634

ThiBash.5634

You’d have to ask Thibash about that one

You flatter me sir. Still, I’m willing to share my build and ideas if you’re interested.

Currently, my PvE/WvW build is as follows:
Skills: Glyph of Elemental Harmony, Armor of Earth, Glyph of Elemental Power, Glyph of Lesser Elementals, Glyph of Elementals.
Air: 25 with Zephyr’s Boon and Quick Glyphs
Water: 15 with Cleansing Wave
Arcana: 30 with Elemental Attunement, Blasting Staff and Evasive Arcana
Gear: Soldiers armor, berserker&cleric trinkets (50/50).

The build brings the minimal amount of defensive/healing I can justify and relies on crits to actually deal damage. The fury gained by auras (mostly magnetic aura with a pinch of ice field blast finisher) combined with Arcane Fury is enough to get permafury. The swiftness frees up Windborne Speed to be used for condition removal instead of transportation. The same concept is used with the glyphs: they’re all sources of controlling conditions (most notably chill or cripple), thus constantly slowing the opponent, which makes them easier to hit, which makes them easier to snare, which makes them easier to hit, etc. As you may notice, none of this hinders the build’s performance as a ranged ‘artillery’ for WvW. In fact, glyph of elemental power makes it easier to hit stuff with meteor shower and makes static field also have a chance of slowing stuff.

As for PvP, I’m currently esperimenting with a signet build. I’ve found that combined with the staff’s own control effects, you can harass an opponent a LOT. With the upcoming changes to Arcana and the new fractal rune, I think signet builds may actually become a very good choice for eles.

Bear in mind though, that I’ve accepted that the staff isn’t a 1v1 weapon, and that I am satisfied when I get around the theoretical 50/50 win-loss ratio. So far, I’ve been above that but there may be special circumstances (WvW and uplevelers for example). However, I feel that with my current build I can put up a good fight most of the time.

On a sidenote, did anyone notice that the fire elemental summon also applies cripple?

What’s wrong with just taking a good thing and expanding it? Why does it always have to ‘be improved’?

Fire: if your target stews in Lava Font it will get hit 4 times over 5 seconds (with cool down, but I have not taken into account the time to cast lava font and aftercast affecting Fireballs dps). That is an additional 242 DPS. That is at most 464 DPS. which is still less than the warrior’s axe at 900. My guess is it is practically closer to 400, which is good, but still a warrior or guardian is going to attack more damage (which cleaves so you only get the advantage with >3 enemies).

You’re ignoring boons and the fact that melee won’t always be within range. Also, if you really want to crank out dps as an ele, you can summon 2 fire elementals that add even more might and auto attacks.

Ascended Complexity

ThiBash.5634

Ascended items always felt bulky and needlessly complex to me. I never understood why they were made unique with offensive and defensive slots, especially since there was a way to get any upgrade in any slot. Them being unique and named basically meant ArenaNet also made extra work for themselves because each item/upgrade combination had to be added manually instead of letting players build them.

So what was the point in making them even more complex? Why was an infinite slot added? I’ve had a hard time explaining ascended gear to my guildies…so now there’s more? I don’t mind the infinite AR (though infinite immediatly raises concers regarding fractal playability at extremely high levels) but I wonder why it was implemented in such a clunky way…

All of these numbers are just for Auto Attack though. Other skills can affect the total DPS (along with Traits, equipment, etc.). But this gives a good idea on where our weapons stand.

Which is exactly why I disagree: it’s not a good indication of where our weapon stands. I dunno about you guys but I barely use my auto-attacks, as there’s almost always something else to cast that deals a lot more damage. There’s also the range issue: warriors deal a lot more damage but most of it is melee. Your own research showed that our fireball is actually stronger than the warrior’s longbow (and has an aoe to boot). The elixir gun outclasses stoning, but has other disadvantages like not being a full projectile finisher and having less desirable fields to combo with. Finally, there’s our boon stacking, which means that most eles will have at least a few stacks of might and/or fury, which can also act as a balancing factor.

I’m not saying things are fair or that the staff has no problems. But looking at the auto-attacks alone doesn’t seem very plausible for eles, as we simply function a little different.

Your Personal Stat Thresholds?

in Elementalist

Posted by: ThiBash.5634

ThiBash.5634

There is something very important you didn’t disclose: Putting ANY points in Arcana tanks your damage. Say bye-bye to big numbers.

There’s also a point you didn’t disclose: the fact that Arcana’s boon duration increases your damage again.

Take Sigil of Battle for example. If you have 30 Arcana, that means you get 30% longer uptime. That’s effectively 2 stacks of might, or 70 Power and 70 condition damage. That’s about half a traitline in stat points from Sigil of Battle alone. Add to that Arcane Fury, the 2 stacks might from Elemental Attunement and the extra might you can get from the extra blast finisher, and you’re getting quite a bit of attack (in addition to extra defense).

Yes it’s less damage than a full zerker build. But it’s not as dramatic as you claim it to be.

THIS is why EA is a crutch; you’d do better learning WHEN to dodge to AVOID damage than you would dodging after the damage has already been done in order to heal yourself by a comparatively small amount. A good PvP’er knows to make every dodge count; even with Renewing Stamina, you don’t have any extra dodges to waste on proc’ing a trait.

I don’t see why you can’t do both: dodge wisely AND get the heal. Or the extra damage, blind and/or cripple/blast finisher.

Your Personal Stat Thresholds?

To me, it’s not so much about the absolute values but more about the relative values. Personally, I take Soldier’s as a mean value between offense and defense. I’d like to do at least average damage, so when I decide to add a defensive item (say, a cleric ring for healing power) I compensate it by an offensive gear item (say, the other ring being berserker).

As for my other stats, I’d like to exchange some more toughness for healing power but that’s currently not an option. All gear with healing power is either defensive or condition damage, so I’m more or less pushed into adding more berserker pieces as well.

But as far as absolute values go, I don’t really have any. Apart from maybe, say, 30% critical chance for my permafury setup.

It could be a side skill for some lore characters. But I doubt it’d be very common. It’s like saying an Engineer could learn how to operate like a Surgeon. As far as the harpies going invulnerable, I always reiterate, work on keeping your entire group in melee range, chain up projectile defenses. You will very rarely see an invulnerability if you do this.

That’s true and it’s good advice, but it shouldn’t happen regardless. Stacking up where the harpies can wipe your entire team with a single blowout isn’t a very sound tactic if things were working properly. Also, they have the ranged attacks needed to not get invulnerable. And finally, they sometimes do that while I jump on the platform they’re standing on. So even when I do get into melee, they still go invulnerable (and of course, their attacks don’t stop).

Best of luck on getting those other bugs reported.

Thanks.

As a player, I always try to remain polite in my communication to ArenaNet. Usually I succeed, but sometimes frustration takes the better at me and I start with the digital yelling. The main reason for this is that I feel like I’m being ignored for whatever reason, when I feel I have a very pressing matter that needs to be looked into. Today however, I found out that while my very pressing, near-gamebreaking issues gets ignored, another one that didn’t matter at all got fixed. You have no idea how extremely frustrating that is. I feel like I’d like to get whomever is responsible for Change Management at ArenaNet and slam his/her head into their keyboard until they finally listen to me.

However, seeing as how the developers have indicated they have very little intention to read posts that are too aggressive, even if understandable, I’m gonna give it one last shot. This is my issue, presented in a calm and mature manner, in the hope that it’ll finally be recognized.

The harpies in the Asura fractal have been bugged ever since they got that ranged blowout skill. And they’re not just ‘bugged’, they’re unable to progress bugged. Eventually you may get by them, but unless you go full anti-ranged/stun, it’ll be a pain.

The issues with the harpies are:
-They randomly go invulnerable all the time. Even in melee range. Even if they can shoot at you. Even when they are fighting with you.
-Their blowout projectile attack gets spammed. Maybe due to the harpies resetting randomly all the time. Sometimes, there’s one every 2 or 3 seconds. Constantly.
-Their blowout projectile has no max range. You can get thrown off by one, get sent back to the res point and then get hit by several more regardless of line of sight or whatever.
-You randomly become defeated instead of downed when thrown off for no apparent reason. The extra repair bills you get make it that much more frustrating.
-Stuck in combat bug: this is the most pressing one! You can actually go all the way to defeated and still remain stuck in combat with the harpies. That’s right, defeated and still in combat! Should the entire team go down, they won’t be able to res because one of the is ‘still in combat’, thus forcing them to abandon the fractal.
-New bug: swirling winds no longer destroys the harpie’s projectiles. Asan ele, I bring a focus just for this one fractal to make it less painful…and it doesn’t work anymore since (at least) today.

To me at least, these issues are far more urgent than no longer being able to get behind the Jade Maw’s head. It’d be a great fix if the knockdown projectiles were simply removed: they’re not doing anyone any favors and they break the game. It’d be a simple fix too, that shouldn’t take long to implement.

Now, I hope I’ve not angered anyone with this post. My main intention is to report a bug and be heard when I do, not to upset anyone’s feelings. Sorry for posAting it like this but it’s been months now and it’s time it got fixed. Thank you for reading.

Sorry for the poor explanation that follows:

There’s a theory on A.I. development that assumes that you can ‘teach’ a brain or a computer by allowing it to make connections with other ‘units’. The more connections you make, the smarter the brain/computer becomes, to the point where it can start learning things from experience.

To me, the Skritt seem to be exactly that. They’re communicating at such high speeds (on ultra high frequencies only they can hear) that they start to make ‘connections’ to eachtother like a brain connecting cells. They don’t have a memory per sé, but everything is constantly repeated and improved upon. Once they split up again, they lose that ‘collective memory’ like the RAM on a PC.

It may be a little hazy, but this is how I picture the Skritt intelligence working. They’re essentially learning on the fly through a large, united discussion, in a very rapid pace. But individually, they can hardly store or use any of that knowledge.

Again, sorry for the poor explanation. It all makes sense in my head, but I have no idea how to properly put it to writing.

Sounds farfetched to me. The reason why it’s ‘possible’ is because the orders represent the fantasy stereotypes: fighter, spellcaster and rogue. Scarlet’s lackeys can often fit one of those stereotypes, but that’s not exactly making it less random.

Someone must have rolled a dice… where is Evil Abed? (not all will get the reference).

All I can say is: go get that pizza yourself Jeff!

How about you make a post that proves : 1) Scarlet has no depth, 2) The Story Doesn’t Develop, 3) No questions are ever answered, and 4) there is no motive.

Scarlet has depth as a character. Everything that was showing in (and out) of game has proved that to this point. What, is everyone angry that there weren’t subtle hints in Beta in early 2012 about this? Is everyone angry that they didn’t know anything about scarlet when the first living story update hit? Is everyone angry that they didn’t know the character’s motives 9 months ago?

You mentioned FF7 in your post, and while it’s true that not all was revealed until much later in the story, at least the story progresses with each step. You cannot say the same for this one: nothing really happens, storywise. Sure, we got a tower, but we don’t know anything more about Scarlet’s or her plans. We learned more about Rox in this patch than we did about her. And Rox only appears as a side character.

As for no questions being answered, the main questions are why does she do it and how does she do it: neither of those is even hinted at. If the question were: can she look mean at you then yes, the question was answered.

Scarlet has no depth because Scarlet has no flaws. Nothing you do as a player so much as touches her, the cinematic confirmed that once again. There is no ‘other side’ to her, she’s just perfect and all her plans always succeed, or at least they obviously never fail. That’s lack of depth. The fact that she’s never seen communicating with anyone is another lack of depth: we only see one side of her.

As for the motive, I’ll grant you that she has a motive. The motive is mostly from piecing together shreds of lore and dev interviews, but it’s there. As for your other points, I think I’ve just proven that they’re quite valid. Being a fanboy doesn’t make the proof go away, but a cool cinematic can do wonders: I for one liked it and for the very first time, Scarlet seemed a bit less annoying than she has been since release.

You can make it more survivable with the +boon duration runes instead of divinity, but with that you take a hit in damage.

If you use a Sigil of Battle, those boons also get extended, effectively giving you an additional 100 Power and Condition Damage. Add the extended Fury to that, and I’d say they’re pretty much even.

A meteor landing on your head SHOULD be overpowered. It makes no sense that a warrior can do more damage with a sword than something traveling through space at thousands of miles and hour, piercing our atmosphere and landing on someone. I want it to be a near instakill. In most decent games, mages with spells like meteor shower do the most dps of all classes combined, but are squishy in exchange for that. We are just as squishy as they are, but have nowhere near that destructive power. I want to nuke my enemies off the face of the planet, I want to demolish continents! that’s what a mage SHOULD do!

Maybe we’re playing a different game then, because my Meteor Shower does exactly that. But that only happened when I started traiting offensively instead of defensively.

Also, GW2’s meteor don’t actually come from outer space.

Build: Auto-Defense or Cantrip?

If they’re used “automatically” it kind of defeats the purpose of them and they would not be effected when used manually.

The way I understood it, the new Cleansing Fire trait would trigger whenever you’d have 3 conditions, so it’d always be useful. The same goes for Armor of Earth and Arcane Shield (because when they trigger you’re in trouble) but I agree that it wouldn’t be so great for Shocking Aura (especially against ranged opponents).

Cool concept but I myself have never played with the automatic defenses, so I need some clarification.

If you slot Armor of Earth and trait 10 Earth Magic for the auto Armor of Earth, does the utility slot Arm/Earth go on cooldown if the automatic Arm/Earth is triggered?

Or can you essentially fire off Armor of Earth twice if you use the utility Arm/Earth just after the automatic proc?

They’re on separate cooldowns, so yeah, you can trigger it twice. And thanks to boon stacking, it doesn’t even hurt if they would go off at the same time because the stability and protection would just get doubled.

However there is a small amount of problems I can see, first up green keys drop 5 to 1 compared to the blue and pink, right now I have a tri-key and 5 green keys, something needs to be done about this, they are pointless without each other so its annoying.

if you read the description of the key pieces, you’ll notice that their drops are bound to the location you fight in the tower. Go to another floor and you’ll get the other pieces.

If you’re failing it in zerker gear it’s simply because, as of yet, you’re not quite good enough in zerker gear to do it. You have the option of continuing to try in zerker gear and hopefully you’ll improve enough where needed to get through or swap things around to give yourself more survivability while you do learn.

You’ve made the conscious choice to die more easily. Don’t blame everyone else when you do.

Well said.

Like the update, it’s decent and although the lore was still far to lean, at least the cinematic was ok.

The only thing brilliant about it were the Quaggans though. They have such good voice actors.

Yup, those are the ones I meant. It’s an odd mix with them being both hilarious and yet you feel sorry for them as they appear to be genuinely sad/scared.

Saying that the voice acting was brilliant doesn’t quite cover it though, but uberbrilliant is such a made-up word…

Scarlet coming from a different dimension or timeline would make her whole story a lot more plausible though.

I liked the ingame cinematic we just got with the new patch, and it did make Scarlet a little less…annoying…but I still have issues with her. She’s just too good at everything, with no reasonable explanation for it.

Scarlet, Slayer of Lores.

All the information regarding her superior intellect have been there for months, so you can’t say they “didn’t give any explanations”. All you had to do was look for it.

Yet there was no reason WHY she is that smart. Only that she is. There’s no explanation why she is that much more smarter than other Sylvari, and there’s no perspective. Uzolan for example, was a genious among humans…but he couldn’t quite match the skill of Asura. He could only match them on a rudimentary level. This still makes him extremely smart for a human, but not unrealisticaly so. Scarlet on the other hand, is an Einstein among cavemen with no explanation whatsoever. Why is she so much smarter than a regular Sylvari? Why aren’t the other Sylvari smarter than they are now?

No explanation whatsoever.

Oh, and for the record: the Asura stating that Scarlet has advanced degrees in all colleges was retracted in a later dev post. She’s only got basic training now. Which makes a lot more sense, really.
