That might be a little over the top. You can however get chill on your targets if you combine Meteor Shower with Glyph of Elemental Power (cast in Water Attunement).

Why would that be over the top? It makes sense if you think about it. A FRACKING ROCK FROM SPACE IS LANDING ON YOU!

You know why it’d be over the top. Massice damage, multiple targets, multiple hits and you want to add daze to that? It’d be overpowered even in 1v1 duels…

The main issue that arises from this discussion is that because Critical Damage is a percentage instead of a value, it gives off a different perception. It seems equal to other traits that also give +% damage. However, it’s good to realize critical damage and +% damage traits are quite different, the latter being much more powerful because it increases both the base damage AND the critical damage. This will be the same regardless of the base stats. At best, assuming you have 100% critical chance, it’ll only add about 2/3 of the damage that a similar flat power bonus would.

The main thing I’m trying to show with my examples though, is that because of the scaling and the reduced amount of critical damage on weapons, a player should have a good look wheter or not that beserker item will do as much as it seems to do. It’s more damage, but it’s a lot less more damage than they would get from the first berserker item.

As an Ele I always feel I have to stay in Water Trait line or Arcana and wear PVT gear so I can survive and do something useful, then nothing is left to take from other trait lines.

This is the exact reason why I am so against moving Cleansing Wave to Master tier. I feel that I personally need at least 15 points in Water in order to be able to survive. However, that does leave me with some points to spread around (not many, but at least some). Moving our main condition removal up means less points to use on different builds.

Build: Auto-Defense or Cantrip?

in Elementalist

Posted by: ThiBash.5634

ThiBash.5634

With the upcoming changes to traits I’ve had an idea for a sort of ‘defense auto-trigger’ build. It’s not a very serious idea yet, but I was wondering what you guys think of it.

20 Fire Magic for ‘automatic Cleansing Fire’.
30 Air Magic for ‘automatic Static Field’.
10 Earth Magic for ‘automatic Armor of Earth’.
10 Arcana for ‘automatic Arcane Shield’.

Now, the first problem is that this is a semi-random selection of traits that apart from the auto defense, have nothing in common. This led me to the second concept: a cantrip based auto defense build.

20 Fire – auto-Cleansing Fire & Might on Cantrip use
10 Earth – auto-Armor of Earth
20 Water – regen and vigor on Cantrips, -20% recharge on cantrips

This leaves 20 free points for traits of choice and of course the utility slots can be cantrips too. With a whopping 5 cantrips, the might bonus is rather good (easily maxed when combined with Sigil of Battle), it’s got pretty much perma vigor, a good way to combat conditions and of course plenty of stability and stunbreakers.

Does this mean that cantrips are basically the best skilltype again, except this time not for just anti-stun but for offensive use as well?

My brain hurts from trying to figure out how to play this game normally.

it appears you have to be psychotic to get the “Best Gaming Experience”

Wow there sparky…it seems you still have to learn a bit or two before you start blaming the game. For starters, there are no paladins in this game: they’re called Guardians. Second, you could try using Rune of the Traveler to speed up your movement, or try using a focus, a sword or your teleport skills. Thirdly, speed is the mesmer’s ‘weakness’ if you will…you’re not supposed to be as fast as a thief or a warrior, or at least not without gearing towards it.

Good write up, though I feel the changes to Tempest Defense and Conjurer are a bit stronger than you make them sound. Tempest Defense in particular sounds like a good defense against stunlock/burst builds, giving you a chance to react. With a 25 second recharge, it should be ready for the next burst. As for Conjurer, it’ll allow for people to use conjures in existing builds more easily. With the recent changes to conjured weapons, there could be some room in current builds for a conjure weapon now.

But other than that, very nice post. You obviously took some time to write it.

Speaking of “relative power of crit damage”, wouldn´t you agree that only thing that actualy matters is it´s effect on actual damage output?
Therefore might power and fury all affect the usefulness of crit damage. The end result is damage, power affects one part of the equation, crit damage another. The only difference that matters is their effect on the value of whole equation.

The usefulness of ‘relative’ is to show how things function. In the example of critical damage, it shows that the more you get, the less useful it becomes. This will be true for any situation, wheter it’s low power/precision or high power/precision. Assuming you care about optimizing, if you go for a full zerker set, the last thing you will upgrade is your weapon(s). If you know that that last bit of extra critical damage will only add a fraction of the additional damage, you can more accurately decide wheter that extra critical damage is worth it. Combined with the poor stat scaling on weapons, you could argue that the extra survivability from a soldiers weapon will be more useful than the last bit of critical damage. Wheter you pick that is ultimately up to you, but if there’s anywhere to pick up a bit more defense, it’ll be there.

The other situation where this can be applied is with traits: it shows why +damage traits are much more valuable for berserker builds than +critical damage traits. It may help zerkers decide if they should go for Water/Earth for the +damage trait, or Air for extra critical damage for example. Personally, I used to think that +20% critical damage from air did roughly the same as Vital Striking (at roughly 50% critical chance) but it turned out that wasn’t entirely the case.

So my suggestion on those skills in order to improve them are: Geyser – push foes who enter it.

of course, without taking the skill’s abilities like granting regen to allies, healing and water field [ The same for geyser and please, make that push unblockable].

So basically, you want Geyser to be Static Field, except that it also heals allies and works on the entire area instead of the edges.

Do you have any idea how insanely powerful that would be?

So, basically, you think when Anet decides to make new characters, they should decide which race they are by seeing which racial stereotypes they fit into? That’s a horrible idea when trying to make a compelling story. Not to mention, all the characters would all start to blend together after awhile.

No, but they should implement it in a believable way. A character can also be very smart without surpassing all Asura by a large margin. Their story ‘fix’ was actually a bit better, making her smart and curious rather than ‘follows all colleges (which no Asura ever did) and also faster than all other Asura’. The latter is just absurd, the first I have no problem with. Her character would have worked just as well if she was ‘just as smart’ as the Asura, or ‘nearly as smart as’. She doesn’t need to be ‘smarter than all Asura’, let alone ‘waaaay smarter than all of them combined’. And if she absolutely has to be smarter than all of them combined, then at least make that happen after the experience she has had, not before. That keeps the story acceptable and believable.

One of the few pros for Scarlet, is that she isn’t the stereotypical nature loving Sylvari.

Like you said, one of the few

The impotence of casual players

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Weird topic title, and odd choice of terms (impotence, really?).

It’s actually a balancing act. What I notice in plenty of players is the ‘I want something rare that is easy to get for me but remains hard to get for others’. Those are mutually exclusive though. Any good MMO has a mix of easy to get stuff, stuff that takes a while, and stuff that’s only for the elite. The good thing in Guild Wars (2) is that statwise, you’re not really hadicapped if you don’t get the best stuff. That makes it more bareble to not get that uber 1337 endgame item. Also, not all the good looking stuff is hard to get. That’s also good. And the longtime-elite players can still get their special goodies, which I have no problem with, because I don’t suffer gameplaywise for not having that special rare mini or that awesomely designed legendary sword.

As you can tell, I like the system as it is now…which is also why I still don’t get why Ascended gear had to be implemented.

_@Fuzzion & Zencow:
The calculation is mostly percentage based, so Might, Power and Fury will only affect the actual damage values, but not the relative power of critical damage. There’s no denying that critical builds gain a lot from having both Power, Precision and Critical Damage. I also fully agree with Zencow’s statement. However, that wasn’t what I was getting at. My argument is that when it comes to adding that final Berserker item (i.e. the weapons) the extra % dps you get is so much lower compared to the first item you added (i.e. the backpack) that you might as well bring a Soldier’s weapon instead.

The main thing I got from looking at critical damage that way is that I finally understood why Vital Striking is a good trait for dps builds. Much better than, for example Arcane Lightning (or any other +crit damage trait). Percentagewise, it adds almost 3 times the damage. So while I was thinking: ‘hey, I have 50% crit chance, any crit damage I add is dps/2’ it turns out that wasn’t entirely the case.

Scarlet, Slayer of Lores.

I would prefer if you didn’t confuse scarlet hate with Sylvari hate. It’s been said already that she isn’t smarter than all asura, just that she got a crash course in all the colleges. The only one that she may have gotten any major experience in would have been synergetics.

It’s not confusing with, it’s an extension of. I’m well aware that the lore was ‘fixed’ but to me, the damage was done at that point. And it was a half-baked fix, because the ingame Scarlet still acts like nothing touches or concerns her. Nothing the players or any of the NPCs do, seems in any way relavant to her. No defeat is a true setback, not even a minor one. She mocks us as if we didn’t do anything at all. So in many ways, she’s still the over-the-top Sylvari that she was at the start.

You may not like me ‘confusing’ things but in reality, Scarlet’s just one of many on a long list of overpowered, overheroic Sylvari that can always to a tad more than would make for a believable and fun character.

Her story would have been more believable on an Asura. Just like how a Charr as top 3 blacksmith in the personal story would have been much more believable than Sylvari. They can have their strengths, but they shouldn’t be outclassing the elder races in everything.

It’s great in PvE, but I don’t think people are complaining about PvE.

I wouldn’t say all PvE, instanced PvE and open world PvE play completely differently. And there are plenty of reasonable complaints about how tough it is to find an ele build that holds its own in dungeons. Though I think a lot of it is greatly exaggerated or exclusive to speed running, I run 30 minute or less CoE runs almost daily with a full-on condition build.

Second that. You can contribute plenty of damage to a dungeon group simply by running soldier’s gear, a staff and a fire magic build. The finesse builds can do a lot more things in terms of support, but the basic fire build’s certainly not worthless or weak in damage.

There’s a grey area between perfect and useless, and most people tend to exagerate to either one or the other. I agree that it’s somewhere in between.

I run with 15 and water and evasive arcana. I like to have a few points in +heal, but that doesn’t change the fact that healing scales the poorest of any stat (though if I recall — and I should really know for certain — healing ripple does scale 1-to-1 ratio) or that you’re going to struggle to kill anybody in full cleric’s. Without some solid offensive punch, anybody can simply run away from you.

And again, you don’t NEED full cleric to survive even on zerg frontlines. Therefore any more stats into survivability is wasted stat allocation, imo.

Good points and I agree with you, as I don’t specialize in healing power myself either. However, when it comes to the worst scaling stat, I’d have to say that’d be Critical Damage. It sounds cool, but the extra dps you get from it is around 1/3 of the actual value.

Say you have a skill that deals 100 damage. With your inherent +50% critical damage, this means it deals 150 damage when it crits. Now, you get +10% extra critical damage and your skill now does 160 damage. 160/150*100%=6.7% extra damage. This number gets lower the higher your critical damage becomes. If you increase your critical damage by +10% when it’s at 200 already, you get: 210/200*100%= 5% extra damage.

Now assume that you have a 50% chance to cause a critical hit. The extra dps you get from your critical damage is then half of that number, because only half of your hits will crit. This leaves you with roughly +3.4% (or 2.5% for the second example) dps, effectively one third of what you put into it.

Consider also that weapons give much less critical damage per stat point, you’d start to wonder why those zerkers don’t simply get a Soldier’s weapon…they’d get far more out of it than they do from the critical damage.

If you can read this then it is proof that ArenaNet’s moderators just, kind and fair.

Eruption

in Suggestions

Posted by: ThiBash.5634

ThiBash.5634

With the upcoming change to Diamond Skin I’ve been mulling about new builds. For staff, the main thing I kept running into was that for staff, condition damage is basically a wasted stat. The main culprit seems to be Eruption not being able to damage players reliably. So I was wondering what the other players would think about the following suggestion:

Current Eruption:
Damage: 462 (1.25 modifier)
6 stack bleeding: 12 s (3060 damage)
Radius: 240
Combo Finisher: Blast
Range: 1,200

New Eruption:
Duration: 3 seconds
Damage: 154 per second (0.417 modifier)
2 stack bleeding per second: 12 s (3060 damage total)
Radius: 240
Combo Finisher: Blast after 3 seconds
Range: 1,200

Basically spread the effect over the 3 seconds. Make the 3rd tick trigger as it triggers now, and then the 2nd and 1st ticks trigger 1 and 2 seconds before the third respectively. Basically it should trigger earlier, and then tick its damage until it ‘pops’, which is then a blast finisher.

The first ticks could be weaker, and the final tick stronger (say 25%,30%,45%).

Try casting Meteor Shower or Churning Earth as an elementalist and then see if 100b is still such a bad skill. You know, since that has the same issues as your 100b, except the recharge is much higher and the caster’s defense much, much lower…

While optimized for group play, it can hold its own while soloing because of the dual nature of certain traits and skills. For example, Glyph of Elemental Power is pretty cool in large encounters because it allows you to cripple or chill large groups with AoE spells (the cooldown is per target). However, it’s also a neat skill for 1v1 duelling because it gives all your spells a chance to slow down your opponent (which makes it easier to hit them, meaning they get hit more, which in turn results in more snares). The elementals are also rather versatile, allowing you the option of heal/chill (ice elemental), cripple/weakness (earth elemental) or range/stun (air elemental) as you choose. Zephyr’s Boon combined with Arcane Fury allows for perma fury and gives you the ability to buff yourself and allies even more with your Frozen Ground. Finally, Rune of Altruism gives you some extra might and condition damage whenever you heal but buffs allies too.

Whenever I enter a duel with someone, I’ll expect the realistic 50% chance to win or lose. Overall, I tend to surpass that number when roaming though.

Scarlet has had as much releases as MKT only during a single year instead of over the course of 8 years. However, I’m specifically referring to the Halloweens in Guild Wars 2. Last year, we learned that MKT wasn’t the goofy happy guy that we assumed him to be. This year, we learned more about his past and his son. There’s a huge amount of lore in there, especially for Guild Wars 2 standards (which is very lean on lore).

In 2 patches, that are one year apart, there is more development on MKT than Scarlet has in the entire Living Story. There’s nothing added to her lore since the short story. With each ‘Scarlet patch’, so little happens that it might as wel be non-existant.

In fact, I think that this year’s Halloween patch had more dialogue in it than any of the Scarlet related LS releases. The discussion between the Mad King and his son probably have more dialogue than Scarlet has since she was created!

Because until that point, Sylvari were already the most diplomatic (only they ‘knew’ that the races should work together), the most magical (cleansing Orr), the most heroic (the only race that starts out by saying their purpose is to save the world) and having one of the 3 best smiths in the world (joining the pact). They have an expert on Orr that knows more than any human scholar. And added to that, they were immune to corruption and could foretell the future.

And then they had to make a Sylvari that was smarter than all Asura. At that point, Sylvari literally were the best at everything.

Sylvari would have been so much better if they were more like Seiran…you know, in the sense that they have a flaw (and only at the very end of her life did she understand what friendship was). Regardless, I deleted my Sylvari long before Scarlet came around…

In the short story they posted on the GW2 website she showed hatred for the control that the Nightmare and Dream had over the Sylvari.

I see…I got that though. It’s a bit of speculation that freeing the Sylvari from the control is a bit speculative then, is it not? Because my impression was that she wanted to remove ‘all’ outside control, not just the Dream for Sylvari.

Then again, everything is always about the Sylvari and how great they are, so I suppose it’s a valid theory.

Regardless, thanks for the clarification.

There’s another possibility. :-)

A few weeks ago, I took my grenade/pistol/shield engineer alt into WvW for fun. I encountered a ranger and we started dulling. I tossed the grenade toolbelt skill to him and switched to Magnetic Shield. At the exact moment, he started his rapid fire while my golem did so as well.

It was sheer luck of course, but suffice it to say, that was one powerful spike. :-)

i dont believe it does. Leaping into a fire field doesnt work either.

That does work actually, as does blast finishing in an Ice Field. You’re thinking of Powerful Auras, which doesn’t work with combo fields. But traits like Zephyr’s Boon and Elemental Shielding work just fine.

Never really tested it, but it should trigger…given that it also triggers on auras from combos. Maybe you can try it for yourself in the PvP area against the ‘profession npcs’ in the northern area?

Healing scales the poorest out of any stat. I would not run clerics personally, though I do get a healing boost from some celestial pieces (mixed with Knight). Most of an eles’ defense comes via traits anyway, and specifically protection and stability.

Respectfully disagree here. The elementalist has quite a few healing skills beside their main healing skill. They get even more if you spec 15 points in Water and/or use Evasive Arcana. While the individual heals may nog get much from it, you have so many healing skills that overall, healing power is a good investment. You’ll want some vitality though in order to survive damage spikes a little better. But with the right traits, healing power is a very good investment for eles.

On a side note, where did you guys learn that Scarlet’s goal is to destroy the Dream? I’d like to know because apparently there’s another piece of lore tucked away somewhere that’s easily missed or overlooked. I’m guessing some interview on a fansite?

My biggest gripe with the Living Story is that I have to bend over backwards to get all the lore, and still miss stuff…apparently…

Engi, the Ele alternative

Not only did my new Engi have double (literally double) the health, the armor was higher, and the power peaked higher.

Noticed the same thing, however I didn’t find my engineer doing much more damage or being much more survivable than my staff ele. At least for PvE that was. In fact, keeping my engineer alive was a lot tougher than it was on my ele.
