reason for not going cleric? people said D/D scales good with heal gear
Lack of damage. Surviving forever is of limited use if your damage can basically be ignored.
The thing is….. world completion was designed when the idea was for the game to be released with guesting and paid transfers already in effect. The delay on implementing guesting, and the free transfers they allowed for months as a compensation, got lots of people world completion easily.
The gold star by your name and the title “Been there done that” was really supposed to mean something.
How can you really claim to have been there and done that if you’ve never fought in a protracted battle over a keep?
Legendaries being sold in the TP and world completion through free transfers have really cheapened the “achievement” of the endgame goals unfortunately. If you earn yours the hard way it will feel much better though…..
Better fix: only allow them to be used against thieves, by any other class, because then they can know what it feels like to lose every fight without a chance to fight back.
just kidding! geez, calm down! ;p
yeah, remove them, and every similar object, or balance them for PvP (not holding my breath for that)
Not sure what you mean about viable damage, to me all that means is you can kill stuff and stay alive (cause, you know, dead eles deal no damage).
You say you’ll be swapping attunements no matter the build, so you won’t lose any might stacking (except from the grandmaster fire trait, but without a single point in fire I can hit 25 stacks of might myself with S/D or S/F, so it’s not like you can’t have might in air).
For an air damage build, I’d put at least 15 points into air for the lightning strike on swap.
If you want single target burst, you’re going to want a scepter, staff is a ranged aoe/cc/support weapon and mainhand dagger is a PBAoE weapon primarily. You can do good single target damage with both, but scepter dagger air-swap>#2>#4 is like 3 hits in ~1sec, hard to get anything like that (in air) on dagger or staff. That combo is basically a guaranteed down on an injured foe with the bolt to the heart trait.
You could have had 25 stacks of vulnerability and your attacker could have had 25 stacks of might (or less of each, but hopefully you get the point). There are a lot of variables in WvW.
That video highlights why it’s usually better to just attack around and spam CCs on downed allies, there’s usually a stealthed thief there about to stomp….
Ouch, you got the repeating forum bug….
Melee player? Which profession doesn’t have access to ranged weapons?
Aggro? ( http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Aggro )
While it does sort of exist in this game, it’ different than other MMO’s. Every character is an individual, more versatile than a simple healer/tank/dps.
Bugging bosses is for boring people. Free loot is just pixels, and getting them with less effort doesn’t make you cool. You can play the game for fun if you want to. Players who “bug bosses for free loot” are throwing out the journey for the destination, they are the type of people who cheat at solitaire, there is no teaching them about “fun” because they don’t understand the “point”.
They did (and continue to) test the game. What they failed to do is teach humans who refuse to have fun how to do so, which wasn’t (and shouldn’t be) their goal anyway. There is no way to control human behavior completely, and they cannot limit sales of their product to people who won’t try to get around game mechanics or people who enjoy occasionally switching to a ranged weapon when the situation arises.
I agree with none of this.
Totally random matches would result in a lot of PvDoor for most of the “top tier” servers and blowouts for the “bottom tier” servers. The ranking system might not be perfect, but there has to be some ranking system to prevent a bunch of non-competitive matches.
Rewards in WvW shouldn’t be too good, if it’s comparable to farming in PvE there will be tons of bag farming zergs running around playing for loot rather than strategy. If loot is your main motivation for playing, go run dungeons, I’m sure some of the people waiting in WvW queue would be grateful.
Server load may also be an issue here. Removing the 5 target cap could doubly (or more) increase the amount of packets sent/received, depending on the situation and how the information is bundled.
Ever been in a 3 way fight in Stonemist where you couldn’t use any skills due to input lag? Let’s up the potential damage calculations per unit from 5 to 200+ and see how that affects large battles……
I find interesting how these people re-trigger the culling and are not affected by the culling too (since they go away from the enemy).
They are affected, you can tell because they are pretty much running in a ball swinging their weapons wildly and spamming aoe. Pretty hilarious to watch them pass if you manage to step out of their path.
For those interested, I will be in Wayfarer hills offering Ice Bow services, 10s a pop. Get them while they’re cold! I also will be offering Premium Ice Bows (with 10 extra charges!) for an additional fee of 5s apiece.
You’re welcome to contact me about setting up a franchise, but my idea was clearly patented before you arrived on the scene…..
I just got a new idea for a business. Frost Bow dealership….. Now I just need to hire about a thousand elementalists and set up the website where people can sign up for the service….
Every class/build has a counter. Every counter also has a counter.
Will paper please stop complaining about scissors? I’ll try to get rock to stop complaining about paper, and scissors about rock as well, maybe we can have an MMO forum Geneva convention of sorts……
NO
words, words, words, words……
5 pages of NO’s, someone probably made my points already…..
Basically, bigger numbers don’t make more fun (for me and those like me, anyway).
They should just come out with an app people can stare at all day which flashes increasingly larger numbers the longer you push buttons. That should satisfy whatever part of the rodent brain is satisfied by this illusion of “progression”.

Poison is the one condition we can’t normally apply, so I love my radiation field
And confusion (pain inverter, also gives retaliation, the one boon we can’t get normally). Asura all the way for condition elementalist.
Asura. Every other race has higher laundry costs, due to their constantly rolling in the dirt with every dodge. Asura do not sully themselves in such a base manner, flipping cleanly through the air like little ninjas…..
Check out the Sylvari racial skills too. I see a lot of people running with the elite that gives 2 sec invulnerability.
It’s hard for me to sub any racial skills for my 3 cantrips and fiery greatsword though, except for screwing around or really specific things. Asura D-series golem helped tank/block in a couple tricky spots when I duo’ed CM story mode with my lady the other day, so there are some interesting uses for racial elites, but nothing to pick one race over another.
The stat bonuses the orbs provided were unbalanced. This was exacerbated by the stat bonuses stacking, and the fact that any team capable of capturing all three orbs already had numerical superiority (hacking notwithstanding). A numerically superior force with +15% to all stats is no fun to fight against, and for players like me anyway, no fun to be part of either.
When they figure out how to add them back in without leaving them open to hacks (those hacks are still there, it’s just harder and less rewarding to use them now as soloing a keep lord & guards is time consuming and dangerous) and without the imbalanced stat adds, but still make them strategically important somehow, then I’ll welcome their return. Until then, I’m fine with them being gone.
Lets be honest, if a server has the capability to take control os the 3 orbs, that doesnt make it an unbalanced mechanic, it shows that the other 2 server lacked the strategy and capability of defending their high value target. Simple as that. It like a chess game, if you don’t protect your king, you lose
True in theory, but not in practice. I’ve been on both side of the coin, having all 3 orbs, and none, and it didn’t come down to skill/coordination as often as off-hours population imbalances.
The day the orbs were removed was a good example. In that match, my server was basically spawn camped by a server with a much stronger overnight presence and a fairly equal NA prime. The day the orbs were removed, we went from less than +100ppt to owning over half the maps in a couple hours. It’s possible that we just got really coordinated and skilled all of a sudden. Mathematically, 15% doesn’t seem like a lot, but it’s greater than the gear attk/def bump from rare to exotic, and that’s without the orbs additional bump to HP.
Even if it’s is purely a lack of strategy, there is no reason to give a clearly superior force more advantage. That only makes the game more fun for the segment of players on the winning side who prefer winning to having a fair fight. I don’t like winning when I know I had an unfair advantage (and when I had 3 orbs on my server, it felt like I could faceroll people). I also don’t like being beaten in a lopsided game (in several fights when the other side had all 3 orbs, opponents would live with 5-20%hp left when it was clear they were fairly equally skilled and the fight really could have gone either way).

I posed this question in another thread but im wondering would you rather fight unarmed, 1 horse sized duck or 100 duck sized horses? discuss.
The real issue there is, would the horse weigh the same as a duck, or less, or more? Because that would determine if it was a witch…..
The real issue here is being overlooked. The rate at which it is possible to earn laurels will tie you to doing these dailies for 6 months to get the gear currently available. If you have multiple characters, you’re looking at years to get what you could from fractals in a few days/weeks. It’s as much a slap in the face to open-world PvE players as it is to WvW players.
Grinding one particular dungeon is still, by far, the fastest way to gear up.
Please add ascended gear for badges and karma.
1000X better here. The only people coming here are those who are complaining – the rest of us are too busy playing.
This ^
This is also the reason the trial of this method received much negative feedback. The ones of us who it worked for were mostly playing, and it was so obviously better we felt no need to come to the forums to say what seemed obvious.
So, better for some and not others.
Result, culling still sucks, and should be removed entirely.
Guess what? That’s what they are working on!
I’ve not been in WvW much this week (been sick, and I don’t play my best or enjoy myself much when my head hurts) but when I have popped in I have seen this same thing.
If it was botters (or players) at the skritt/centaurs/krait you would see orange swords pop on the map, which I haven’t seen. Neither have I seen an excessive amount of players standing in spawn or crafting. I don’t do the jumping puzzles, so I can’t account for that, but it doesn’t seem like 20+ people would be in there constantly without ever talking in map chat.
If it is an organization issue, I can understand that, we are pretty free-spirited generally. I’ve got more tinfoil hat theories, which I won’t bother putting here, because if they are true, it’s just sad, and if they aren’t, there’s no reason to start rumors.
What I think is most likely is that the queuing software is bugged somehow. Simply looking at the queue times won’t tell that, and fixing (not to mention simply identifying) a bug in the system is likely a daunting process to say the least.
Balanced teams are stronger than any one class, so roll anything you enjoy. Really depends on your play style.
Its not just kicking people from a party.
Its the entire functionality of right clicking someone’s name beyond reporting them.
Here is a screenshot of me right clicking a guild member’s name in LA vs. in WvW.
That happens when you are different servers, something about the game engine not being able to jive with accounts on different servers (even if only temporary, as in the case of instances and WvW, since those are somehow technically different “worlds”).
If you were in the same map in WvW it would work like the “LA” pic, if you were in different overflows in LA it would work like the WvW pic.
It’s also the same reason there are /team and /map chat functions in WvW but they both work the same. Some big hurdle in the coding preventing easy communication between worlds.
Sorry Gewn but lets face it Chuck is getting on a bit and Jean Claude refuses to take orders from anyone speaking english.
I hear SOR is getting Marco Pierre White and Gordon Ramsay not only are they scarier we will now have better cookies then TC
Yes, but he’ll constantly call you donkeys and throw things at you.
Gordon Ramsay huh? By halfway through the show (I mean week, yeah….) you should all be either crying or cussing and talking about quitting. If you make it through though, you’ll be guaranteed a 5 star rating and millions of dollars in royalties. My advice would be to scrub all your armors and weapons thoroughly before he arrives and get rid of the microwave and frozen packages of skrittburgers.
-straps a quaggan backpack on the pain train- Better.
-swaps in a corrupted quaggan when Envi is looking the other way-
“Quaggan will kill yoooooo!”
Also, don’t underestimate Jean Claude van Kitten…..
(edited by Thrashbarg.9820)
Don’t worry. We’ll bring our A game next week. Been a fun week so far though!
Agreed. Look out for the pain train, it’s coming.
Look out yourselves, after the 28th we’ll be able to actually see said train.
I like shinies. Which means, because I’m a skritt, I guess.
I have used fiery greatsword many times to get away from thieves, and even to solo theives. I guess it’s all in the eye of the beholder (or skill of the player
).
Ssssh, don’t give away the trade secrets. ;p
Was having a nice 1v1 with another d/d elementalist the other day, then the call came in to defend a keep so I had to disengage (what was basically a pointless fight anyway, would have lasted forever….) so I threw down my fiery greatsword and hauled kitten away without the slightest concern the other elementalist might be able to catch me. I’d seen him use his elite elemental already.
With areomancers alacrity and fiery greatsword, I have possibly the most mobile build available.
I used to run s/d, still do sometimes, but I roam a lot and it lacks against thieves compared to d/d (and it seems like half the enemies are thieves these days).
Scepter has a couple really nice things going for it, pressure and burst. It is really best against single targets.
Earth #1 is good pressure, with 3 projectiles per attack, you can stack a good amount of bleeds with a decent bit of direct damage (watch out for projectile reflect skills!). Earth #2 and #3 can help protect you while you lay out that pressure damage, forcing heals and condition removals and setting up for your burst, if you can land Earth #3 anyway, it’s hard at max range since it’s reallllly slow moving.
Air 2&3 are both instacast. With 15+ points in air, you can strike a single target in melee range 3 times in about one second by swapping to air>rtl>air2 (with arcane utilities you can make that 5 hits, if you really want to build for burst), if they are out of melee range it will take slightly longer as rtl will have some travel time. Air #3 is so good, a low cooldown instant blind, sooo good.
Water attunement is a little lacking, although #2 is has a pretty fast cast for 5 stacks of vuln and hits pretty hard, so I’d usually throw that down hoping someone stands in the circle long enough…. If you have a crit/vigor build and omnomberry pie/ghost the #1 in water is pretty good for healing up and stacking vigor with 3 chances to crit per attack, works well with signet heal as well.
Fire is pretty much only good for phoenix, well aimed it can hit 3 times on one target in under 1 second (from 1st hit to 3rd, that is) and gives vigor! The #1 attack is terrible even compared to the water #1. Dragon’s tooth, well, we all know about that one, good damage IF it ever hits anything, immobilize or fire at immobilized targets or use to break siege weapons.
For elite skill I much prefer the greatsword to the elemental these days, unless I am soloing a supply camp or something where having a “tank” summon can help ease the pain. Greatsword mobility is epic, and the damage is pretty ok too. A quick #5>#3 combo on a siege weapon which is up against a wall or something can drop half or more of it’s hp and hurt anyone standing near pretty bad too. The #3 is an evade.
No thanks, 5+ second ability lag and invisible armies are no fun for me. I hope everyone who does go enjoys it though.
Gonna jump in here to say a big THANK YOU to Habib for this update.
I can’t see how anyone would think the current culling method is better than the trial one. Well, I can actually, those are the people who zerg-ball as their only tactic. Who cares if you can see enemies when all you are doing is running around in lawnmower mode, right?
In my opinion it is 1000 times better to see your enemies than allies. You can count dots on the mini-map if you are scared there aren’t enough people around you, or use some sort of voice communication, or hell, even type…..
Any time someone complains about the trial culling method and claims they actually prefer not to see their enemies all they are really saying is “don’t nerf my invisible zerg ball!”.
Can’t we all agree to just keep our private server business on our community forums? Many of us from all sides go to great lengths to keep this forum a place to talk about the matchup, and I’m pretty sure SoR and Sbi really don’t care. Can’t wait till work is over, I’m ready to battle!
That reminded me of Mel Brooks’ History of the World.
“Oy the agony!
Oy the shame!
To make my privates public for a game!”
From what little I’ve learned about communication techniques through my work/training, using phrases like “I know what you’re going through, I’ve been through it myself” is likely to trigger negative emotions even though it is an honest and genuine attempt at sympathy. Every person has a unique perspective which feels inherently valid and suggesting it is less unique or valid can cause a defensive reaction even if it’s not intended.
From my perspective, I don’t see that SoR went through the same thing that TC and SBI are currently. Not to suggest at all that what SoR did go through was less difficult or anything, it’s just different. Allow me to attempt an explanation (this wall of text brought to you a blend of Nicaraguan and Guatemalan organic coffees).
BG had better “night” coverage but worse “primetime” coverage than SoR. That would mean SoR had to spend a good chunk of the day just recapturing and upgrading to get back on an even keel. SoR’s NA prime crew is well organized and was consistently able to hit a higher PPT than BG at some point every day, and usually finished the weekend even or ahead of BG as well.
SoR’s NA prime crew is at least a match for, and often more numerous and organized than TC’s already. In my opinion, we would have had that balanced and fun match which keeps getting lip service as the overall goal had SoR not gained a huge oceanic presence. It’s definitely what is needed in tier 1, and I hope they have all the success they desire, but I don’t really see how tier 1 is so much better than a balanced tier 2, especially since there are now basically four tier 1 servers.
SoR, I hope you make it to tier 1 (and quick, lol) and have a ton of fun there. Hanging around in tier 2 on purpose IS throwing the game though. If you can steamroll tier 2, you ARE ready for tier 1. Sending in all lowbie alts to farm kills is not showing respect to your enemies. Last game I played, my guild was the #1 organized PvP guild on our server, and we considered it disrespectful to do any less than our best. I still play by that philosophy.
SBI, from what I’ve seen of you (not much, but I usually only play on TCBL) you have quite a few good fighters. Don’t let this week get you down, you aren’t the next HoD!
Each rare gives you a possible 3 the mystic kit has a 25% recovery rate, on average this should give you 3 ecto’s for 4 salvaged rares. Black lion kit has 50% recovery, which should give you 1.5 ecto’s per rare.
Magic find should not affect salvaging according to the wiki.
Your math seems to assume the probability of getting 1, 2, or 3 ecto to be the same. Can you site a source for this information or is it a guess/assumption?
[FEAR], we simply walk into Mordor.
More like march, orcs don’t really walk…..
Reviving is a part of the game and you just have to learn to factor it in. It’s one of my favourite mechanics for various reasons.
One such reason is this: Often you’ll have a zerg force outside a keep, or a zerg v zerg going at it. You get those D/D eles who love to think they’re the shizit by pushing the boundaries hard, messing up, and dropping. They have mist form as their get out of jail free card, flee from downed into the “safety” of their zerg, and get a res so they can do a rinse repeat of their ever used ginger bread man tactics. That’s where I come in.
I keep an eye on these players. When they go down I start a pursuit and chase after their mist form. When I get within range, right in the middle of their zerg, I spawn 3 clones, drop a TW, shatter for distortion, stomp, and blink/prestige back to the safety of my lines.
I can only imagine these players going “OMG, WTF!” every time
Love downed/res.
On the other hand, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve activated Mist Form at ~10% health just to have someone follow me into my zerg, probably thinking I was downed, and get focus fired down instantly.
Haha, yeah! Mist form is not the same as vapor form, but bloodlust blinded cookie cutter shatter mesmers (see what I did there?) are pretty easily confused…..
Blowing 3-4 big cooldowns and an elite for one stomp seems pretty wasteful to me, but to each their own. I’d consider it a win if I can get a mesmer to drop their TW somewhere that it won’t benefit their zerg at all, even at the cost of my gingerbread man, I mean pixels….

I think both downstate-haters and downstate-lovers might agree the following two suggestions/changes:
1. reduce the amount of hitpoints in downstate
(it was done in sPvP already, needs to be done in WvW as well)2. don’t allow rally on trashmobs in WvW
(when a player downed you, it should require a player to rally on, not some cheap trash mob you barely scratched before he died to some AoE nearby)pls discuss
1) Disagree, because it would require a reduction in aoe damage (perhaps damage in general) to balance. The speed of revival in combat should be halved, and the ability to revive defeated players while in combat mode should be eliminated altogether . That would solve the problem of players simply facetanking ballistas and arrow carts while reviving.
2) Partially agree. It would be better (imo) if rallying off mobs were only possible if significant damage had been done to them AFTER being downed. Damage done to trash mobs from casual aoe before going down should NOT count toward rallying. That way, builds focused on downed state survival/damage would have a place and use, but the problem of rallying off unintended random damage would be solved. Rabbit rallying should be removed altogether. If that’s not possible or too hard to code to be worth it, just remove rallying off trash mobs completely.
Sounds like something got overlooked back in the patch which disabled all the other bundles you can buy in pve from wvw (like the experimental rifle that gave stealth, etc.). Report it using the bug report feature in game.
Legendary weapons were originally intended to be rare.
Guesting and paid transfers were originally intended to be in effect at launch.
The game was originally intended to be released “when it’s done”.
Walking on a road paved by good intentions may not be the best idea, but hey, it is what it is.
Not sure why we’re putting each sentence of a paragraph on it’s own line, but hey, I’ll play along.
@above
He pulled 3.5k fire grabs with 100 tick bleeds while soloing a champ. All he did was rotate through all of his skills in one attunement, then move to the next with a little bit of kiting and some basic healing/utility pops every once in a while. Idk what you’re talking about.
Haha, yeah, 3.5k fire grab looks pretty sweet….. Until you realize it’s on a 45 second cooldown, requires burning to setup damage and half or more of the time it will miss anyway because it’s hitbox is the size of a gnat. Then compare it to the warriors 100 blades skill, which will hit for 3-5 times as much, 5 times as often (even more really, because you can spec that warrior as a full glass cannon and facetank stuff that will 2 shot a bunker elementalist).
Glass cannon warrior soloing Arah explorable mode:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKy67S6uvNU
(notice he has more health and as much toughness as a bunker elementalist, in full ’zerker gear)
Facetank warrior build: (warning: some profanity in the video, not as much as I uttered watching it though, brb leveling my warrior so people can complain about a real TANK class rather than all the “ermagerd d/d ele iz OP!” crap I keep seeing)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cv2ux0GpejM
(This is what a warrior looks like using a build similar to what most bunker elementalists run, but a bit more into damage traits; notice the 30k hp, condition removals and heals about every 5 seconds, yeah, but d/d elementalists are on the “watch list”, ok guys, ok…..)
(edited by Thrashbarg.9820)
The main thing is for control; I want to be as highly mobile as possible. Reading the guide I mentioned above and after playtesting a bit this game isn’t all about high damage sustainability. But being able to react on the fly and adapt to every situation. What utilities would you suggest?
I tend to sub armor of earth for cleansing fire, as it’s pretty rare to need that many condition removals and stability is really hard to come by in many situations. 3 cantrips are good though, especially if you are still learning or in really dangerous situations.
If you want to sub in other utilities look at arcane wave for blast finishing (another heal, more might, etc) with some decent aoe damage. Really, anything works, lol, I’ve even had some fun and a modicum of success using lightning hammer and magnetic shield conjures. There are plenty of viable builds (maybe not optimal, but usable) and it’s easier to experiment with them once you get past the elementalist’s rather long learning curve.
I play an Asura, why shouldn’t I be able to make portals?!
Robbed of their uniqueness? Not quite, they can still poop clones all over the place…..
To all of the TC’ers who are complaining about the current disparity in numbers I would like to remind all of you that what you are experiencing now is exactly what Crystal Desert went through when the two servers shared the same tier. That is not a hostile remark by any means – it is a fact (CD did have a superior Oceanic crew though).
Kinda contradicting statements there? (in bold)
Not complaining here either, it is what it is, just, ya know, don’t kid yourself. CD would routinely cap half or more of the map with that superior (numerically) Oceanic crew. TC isn’t in position (numerically) to cap half the map at any time of the day currently, SoR’s NA prime crew could already match or beat ours.
I don’t think anyone on SoR is in the mentality of “Let’s dominate T2” but rather the mentality of "Let’s prepare for T1.
(i do not speak for my server or my guild, only myself)
I present to you, Humans, Charr, Norn and Asura alike, the very attitude that is poison to a population and an attitude which, I feel, is poisoning WvW. The rest of this person’s post is worth reading, because it tries, at some length, to justify a strange premise: We should all, eventually, be in T1.
That is the focus. To ‘win’ wvwvwvw. Not to have any sort of fun or any good fights. Indeed, this person goes on to suggest that other servers should be like SoR, or any of the other servers in T1, or any of the other servers clawing their way up to what? Glory? Perfection? A better challenge? We all know it’s a zerg; let’s not pretend.
I would prefer a different goal: that those of us on TC disregard this ongoing clamor for some rarefied air and focus on what we do best. When we make WvWvW a ’player’s club’ we chase off many of the people who make this community bright and beautiful. I bring my thoughts to the Charr present, the Asura present, the Norn present and the Humans present.
I second this proposal and will forward it to the Asura War Council: Preparations, Planning and Prospectivity department for review immediately.
(In the last game I played, my guild of 2 years climbed to the top of the world pvp ladder. It started with the core being focused on doing our best in battle as well as selectively recruiting only players with good attitudes. “Willing to learn” and “enjoy playing all game modes with friends” were more important on applications than “fully geared” or “high KDR”. With that positive foundation, our success was largely due to just trying to have fun; and having fun by doing our best in planning and team strategy naturally led to the top.
Eventually, however, a subtle shift in attitude began to take place. It wasn’t noticeable to many at first, so much happening in a guild of ~200 at any time it’s hard to see the subtle undercurrents sometimes. Our recruitment began to focus more on the level of gear and specific class/build than player skill or attitude. Our battle strategies began to focus more on winning as efficiently as possible, began to look more at overall score than individual battles. Our battles became mostly routine 4 minute rolls akin to what a 10 golem + 50 man rush on an undefended tower looks like in GW2, with one or two a week that would actually be challenging 1hr-plus fights which made our week of prep and steamrolls feel like they had some point at least.
Most of our core players quit after a prolonged attempt to cure all the little interpersonal drama flames that were springing up all over due to the underlying problem of playing to win instead of playing for fun and competition. We forgot that games should be fun, and lost something more important than pvp rank.
tl;dr sorry, I’m not abbreviating that ;p)
Currently, some players causing the AoE are able to do more damage to one person while also controlling a portion of the field, compared to a player with single target damage.
What AoE does more to a single target than single target attacks?
Backstab takes less than 1 second to channel, can be used repeatedly by re-stealthing every few seconds and can easily hit over 10k on anything but a full bunker build. Churning earth, on the other hand, has a 3 second channel time during which the caster is unable to move and is easily interrupted/blinded/etc, has a 30 second cooldown and still hits individual targets for less than one backstab.
On the time/cost/opportunity front, thief wins every category.
How about meteor shower? Probably the most showy AoE in the game. Takes 3 seconds to channel. Perhaps if someone didn’t notice the meteors hitting their head, or forgot they have a HP meter to watch, or forgot that some keys on the keyboard make your avatar move, or that moving out of a meteor storm might keep their avatar upright, or that being upright is desirable, they might soak up the full duration and get downed. Meanwhile a thief or warrior can oneshot that silly elementalist, then simplay walk out of the meteors.
There are so many counters to AoE in this game it’s strange to me that anyone would think they are a problem.
Some of the weaker single target attacks might need a small buff, but if AoE damage (or radius, or duration, or frequency, etc) is nerfed, it will just turn into even more Blob Wars 2 than it already is.
sPvP should get it’s own balancing. If anything, AoE is too weak in WvW as it is currently. In sPvP you can’t rez the defeated, there are a max of 8 enemies to deal with ever, and cap points are so small they can be soaked in AoE easily. In WvW cap points are huge and giant globs of players can chain heal/rez each other faster than AoE can damage them even when defeated. The game modes are so different that no balance changes to one should impact the other without serious consideration.
How much of that stuff from GW1 was in at or within 6 months of release? (honest question)
I only played GW1 for about long enough to realize it was all instanced, and coming from a game where you could fly and fight 80v80 “guild” battles I just couldn’t get into GW1 with no jumping at all and no open world content (my own hang-ups, I’ll admit, I bet GW1 was epic fun for many people).
Is it possible that they will continue to add features to GW2? Like new tPvP maps? Did GW1 ship with every mode currently available? Might people get better results here by making suggestions rather than basically insulting the designers of GW2? (Just saying, if I made this game and read some of these threads, I’d probably start to get fed up with the “ermagerd! gw2 is suckz! gw1 wuz gawd!” stuff…..)
@ Halandir: Team synergy and builds don’t play a role in GW2? Cool, you get a group of random builds together without any healing or interrupts on their skills (cause they aren’t important, right?) and send them up against a team comp with some thought and skill, we’ll see how that goes for you…..
Spectator made would be awesome (and has been talked about since beta, and with the focus on e-sport will have to be added at some point). More maps would be awesome, perhaps one could be a guild hall with a guild lord….. oh wait….. Rankings would be awesome. Those are all good suggestions and none require “this game sucks because it doesn’t have” as a preamble.

Good morning.
It looks like I had the wrong information about how guild influence works with guesting.
The correct answer is: You still get influence for your home world guild when you are guesting.
Sorry for the wrong information yesterday.
Personally I find this disappointing. I was planning on switching to a different server than my main guild to WvW, and then PvE with my guild on their server. I can do this, but knowing my efforts will not go towards helping my guild in anyway is frustrating.
I was so happy to hear about guesting finally coming, but now it just seems soured.
Go back and re-read that post you quoted. It says you WILL get guild influence for your guild while guesting……
I’d consider some more points in air and/or maybe a few pieces of knight’s gear to replace some of the valkyrie’s. Sounds like you’d have a pretty low crit chance with high crit damage. IMO it doesn’t matter much how high your crit damage is if you don’t ever actually crit.
