Minion survivability is fine outside of like 3 of the fractal bosses. They can facetank Lieutenant Kholer’s condition spam spin move and only go down to like half health.

DPS is still not competitive with wells build though. My basis for this is how long it takes to solo the graveling at the very start of AC.

Reaper Changes for BWE3

Adding an icon to deathly chill doesn’t do anything to fix how completely useless that trait is in any build ever. Power damage builds aren’t going to spend a trait slot on that when their other option is basically 15% more damage on shroud auto. Condition damage builds aren’t going to use a greatsword or a utility slot to apply chill when they have to sacrifice time applying bleeds/burning or one of their powerful corruptions in order to do that. Hybridmancer is not a thing and is never going to be a thing again, not since dhuumfire was originally moved off of applying on any crit.

Chill damage is worthless

Tobias.8632

It’s interesting because the chill has the same damage as old burning. But it suffers from the same problem as old burning… it does not stack. Reaper now is more of a bursty condi damage with fear, poison and burning on RS, it is quite strong. But chill cannot stack so it becomes a slow DOT.

So I indeed feel it is weak, but I don’t think increasing its coefficient will make it better. It is the whole mechanics which needs to be changed. I think, what reaper needs is a reaper-specific-chill, which stacks in intensity or as some suggested change the trait so that instead of stacking chill, you apply torment or confusion or whatever other intensity-stacking condition (and without iCD).

I feel that chill needs to remain a duration stack for the purpose of allowing it to have better uptime as a form of crowd control.

Rather then changing chill to work with this crappy trait, they need to completely remove this trait and replace it with something chill-themed that is actually good, like say, +40 % chill duration from all sources, sort of like that fear trait that gave increased duration. That bonus to chill uptime would be worthy of being a grandmaster.

They made this skill much better in combat, but honestly I would rather have it be a purely mobility skill.

Say you’re doing a run in any dungeon and you need to get past a pack of mobs quickly. If you try to activate this skill, you’ll target one of them behind you, turn around, and helicopter into his face.

Chill damage is worthless

in Necromancer

Tobias.8632

So I tried gearing up a reaper for condition damage and played around with this. It ticked for about 400 damage on mobs in Orr.

Even in a full conditionmancer setup, you would never attack with greatsword or use skills that apply chill over your corruptions.

In any power build it’d never be worth taking over the one that gives you attack speed in shroud.

So this GRANDMASTER trait isn’t ever worth taking if you play conditions, and it isn’t ever worth taking if you don’t play conditions, so what’s it for?

Nemesis's new video on necro DPS is brutal

Tobias.8632

Haven’t taken Nemesis all that serious since he tried to proclaim that we out damaged Warrior. I’d love to see a “Nike reacts” video to this though, dude is going to blow a casket when he sees this.

Ok, but unless I’m reading these numbers incorrectly, he’s kinda proved his point mathematically, hasn’t he? It’s kinda late and I’m in the middle of packing so I may indeed have been misreading, but it sure looks like he’s at least dishing out a competitive level of DPS.

That wasn’t the point of the video, it’s about how this meta of 3 classes designed to carry ice bows to a boss and four ice bows to kill the boss in 5 seconds renders any dps measurement pointless since the ice bows do so much more damage then any player could hope to achieve.

Nemesis's new video on necro DPS is brutal

in Necromancer

Posted by: Tobias.8632

Tobias.8632

I feel like it’s already well established that ice bows are the thing that makes “meta speedrunning” happen. The fact that ice bow 4 still has not been capped to like 1 hit per target per second is the most disturbing part of GW2’s development.

Talks about dagger being suboptimal in fights where it is difficult to melee. I agree with this, I carry an axe around with me all the time, but the only time I’ve ever needed to use it was in archdiviner, mai trin, and jade maw. Not in any of the dungeons.

Talks about how sick his “nosferatu” build is, which seems to be very similar to the metabattle wells necro except that he uses blood is power instead of signet of spite and doesn’t use signet of vampirism as an offensive heal and once lich form expires his dps goes down from amazing to below mediocre. Maybe he’ll surprise us with a video later and show that he can sustain above 11k dps but I feel like if that was possible, people like Brazil would have already shown us how to do it.

Talks about how “Team – Phalanx Strength” from metabattle is cancer designed entirely around ice bow, which is true. Talks about baddies being bad which is also true. I don’t know about other people’s experiences but I play in a lot of “zerk 80 exp” groups with no eles no icebows and no prebuffing other then guardians popping empower as we run up to the boss, and fights are still very fast and efficient. I’ve also been kicked on account of being a necro like twice ever, but that may have something to do with me never bothering to go above fractal 20, I’d imagine that cancer congregates a lot in the fractal 50 LFG.

Main problem with this video is the only people who are going to watch it are people who already agree with it. The scrubs he makes a point of in the video aren’t going to sit there and let a snarky european make fun of them, they’re going to close the video and go back to doing what they do. People who want to exploit and are actually “good” at it aren’t going to watch it either.

I feel like the thing that is mostly at fault is the dungeon design itself, exploit meta is a result of dungeons being so repetitive and boring and easy that people want to get that crap done as fast as possible and just get paid.

Yes, and in GW1 the most prestigious armor was gated behind grinding on a scale that would not believe, because that was what there was to do in the game other then pvp.

GW1 also had you creating different party comps of support, healers, and damage dealers to meet the challenging content.

The core of guild wars pve has always been that instead of increasing the level cap to 90 and adding new level 90 gear to grind for, they add horizontal progression by increasing the number of skills available to classes and new challenges that require you to use and combine these skills in new ways.

Any steps GW2 takes towards GW1 is for the better, because GW1 is a better game in every way.

Did that a bunch of times ages ago, it’s funny, the minions fill up the target cap on boss attacks so most of them don’t even take damage.

Except for lupi, his aoe life siphon has no target cap, when he uses that on 30 minions he restores like half his health.

Someone test minions in pve

in Necromancer

Posted by: Tobias.8632

Tobias.8632

The main problems minions had of not attacking targets and not surviving are basically non issues. MOST fights, it’ll just be one bone minion that dies and everything else will have 100% uptime. Fractals are a different story, you would never take minions into grawl shaman or mai trin or archdiviner or whatever else because the minions die pretty much instantly in there.

Minions are a problem in skipping sections, but this can be alleviated by just swapping the skills out for those sections which kills the minions. Little bit of extra effort.

Most of the sections where you pull mobs around a corner are not a problem, you just have to learn how minions work. As long as you don’t target anything, they won’t attack anything, and the mob being pulled should ignore them until you and your minions start attacking.

Big upside to this is that minion necro carries two or three blast finishers on their utility bar, popping those rats before a fight isn’t a bad idea.

Overall, dungeon minionmancer is viable. It’s not optimal in all situations. For the situations in which the minions can stay alive and not cause problems, we need the calculator boys to get on that and work out what the DPS is and compare it to the meta wells setup.

If you gave necro fire fields and blast finishers, it would just turn it into an elementalist or guardian.

If I wanted to play an elementalist, I would play an elementalist.

It sounds like you want to play an elementalist, you should do so.

Triple trouble is a joke, however there is a space for conditionmancers, there’s like one set of problematic mobs that spawn that are only vulnerable to conditions. Sounds like the group you were doing it with were also terrible, I ran that with TTS once playing the one good pve necro build, wells, and there was a phase where they would first call fire fields, then call for all fields which is when I would be able to dump the well damage.

You cannot judge the state of the game on one world event that 90% of the playerbase doesn’t even bother to do.

You haven’t even hit level cap yet, probably haven’t experienced the current terrible state of gw2’s “pve endgame”.

If you’re determined to keep playing necromancer, I would recommend switching to
http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Necromancer_-_Dagger/X
Even without the level 80 armor and runes, using these combinations of skills and weapons should give you the smoothest leveling experience. Minions are terrible.

In terms of other game modes, necros are in a better state in spvp now then they have ever been before with the cele signet build, and they’ve always been a part of wvw meta wellbombing from range.

Reaper Changes for Next BWE

Death’s Charge – Now dashes to a target, rather than in a direction. No longer passes through your target. No longer stops hitting if the player hits a wall.

This worries me greatly.

The addition of the skill doing more damage when performed against a wall seems like blatant encouragement of the “stacking” meta tactic for clearing dungeon content.

This common tactic of clearing all dungeon content by stacking, pulling mobs to you, and cleaving them down is widely acknowledged as being the most cancerous thing to ever happen to PvE in this game. It is the antithesis of challenging and interesting content, as it makes all dungeons boring and easy. Stacking needs to be REMOVED and DISCOURAGED, not encouraged.

Lastly, while these greatsword buffs sound amazing, are you going to do anything to preserve the dagger’s niche as more of a single target weapon? If the greatsword is going to be our best dps weapon and also our best cleaving weapon, what niche does that leave for dagger?

Necromancer staff vs Revenant hammer

in Necromancer

Posted by: Tobias.8632

Tobias.8632

Let’s just take a surface glance at this

Revhammer has:
A slow autoattack that is a 100% physical projectile at 1200 range
A projectile-blocking dark field that follows the character
3 high damage aoe attacks, two of which are blast finishers, one of which is an aoe knockdown

Necrostaff has:
A slow autoattack that is a 20% physical projectile at 1200 range
1 high damage AoE attack that is a blast finisher only if there is an enemy to set it off
3 extremely low damage aoe attacks, one of which is an aoe fear but has a very long cooldown to “balance” this

I feel like significant buffs could be made to staff such as making the autoattack a 100% finisher, increasing the damage of other marks, adding another blast finisher, and making the blast finishers activate on combo fields just to bring it in line with the actually decent design of the hammer.

Could Robert Gee be more transparent with us

in Necromancer

Tobias.8632

Regarding general silence, it’s mostly due to how busy everything is at the moment, but also due to how a company as large as ArenaNet works. I’ll see if I can explain a few things to put the situation into context.

Right now I’m waiting to get feedback from the upcoming beta weekend on Chronomancer and Reaper, but I haven’t worked on either of them specifically for several weeks. Many of the changes you’ve seen from Gamescom were locked down weeks ago in order to assure the stability of the floor demo and the upcoming beta weekend. With a game as big as Guild Wars 2 it takes a long time (and a lot of QA effort) to make sure big events like Gamescom go smoothly. My work over the last few weeks hasn’t been for Necromancer or Mesmer and is actually been for the Warrior elite specialization (which I probably can’t say anything else about). I’m also fixing bugs on live for ALL professions this week and next which has kept me pretty busy.

Now this isn’t to say that I’m not paying attention to what’s being said or what’s been said in the past. I take notes on threads I think are relevant for when I have time to work on them. I have notes on things to improve with both axe and scepter as well as a note about skills that we could add projectile blocking to (incidentally RS 2 blocks projectiles because of a suggestion I read here). These are changes I’d like to get to and see happen, but right now iteration on Reaper and Chronomancer are probably going to take priority over that once the beta finishes.

I hope that clears up a few things. I’m not really as talkative as Roy or Karl, but I’ll see if I can show up now and then to answer the occasional polite question.

I just wish the team would stop being so afraid of overbuffing necro.

When other classes get buffs, they get HUGE broken buffs that usually have to be tuned back later and end up being still extremely powerful post-buff. Necro on the other hand is lucky to get minor QoL changes, and anything that ends up being 0.5% too good gets a 20% nerf fairly quickly.

Best example of this is the downstate necro damage which got taken from 50% down to 25%. I feel like necro having huge downed damage was a good way to balance out how terrible the downed 2 skill is. Necro has a massively telegraphed and therefore easily avoidable single target fear on a long cast time. Compare that to guardian having an instant AoE knockdown, or elementalist being able to go into mist form. Those are extremely strong downstate skills, yet no one complains because they’ve just gotten used to it and expect those classes to be strong. You brought necro downstate damage in line with other classes, but you didn’t do anything about the crowd control skill being unusably terrible to balance it out.

It seems like the people in charge of balancing necro are like the only people working on balance who actually have finesse and/or are worried about overdoing it. This is really professional, but maybe it’s time to stop being cautious and just throw out some buffs without worrying too much that they might be too good. Guardian burn damage is still too good. Everything about elementalist is still too good. The people in charge of those classes seem to be fine with them being the best at everything. Maybe it’s time to try the same tactics with necromancer balance and just let them have good things for a bit.

Why minions look the way they look

in Necromancer

Posted by: Tobias.8632

Tobias.8632

I always loved the way the minions look in this game. By far the best aspect of the minions is their visual design, because everything else about them sucks.

They look like if you took a bunch of gore and offal and random body parts and used them to build robots made of meat. That’s the whole idea of necromancy is it not? Take these organs, these tendons, and these bones, stitch them together like legos to create a construct that will do what it is bid. They nailed it.

People talk a lot of **** about the way the flesh golem looks, but it’s like you’re creating this thing and it’s whole purpose is to charge into things and knock them down and do damage, so you give it a lot of weight and something hard at the front, it looks like it is fit for its intended purpose.

No one is currently using the SA from guardian unless you are referring to the previous victories when it was enabled. In case you didn’t see the TTS/GSCH Teq post right above, EG is saying that they beat it with time to spare.

Really? Because I read

The one we did this afternoon failed… good for you that yours succeeded… We were not even close to finishing. Ask other people in TTS who were there.

Just did another organized Teq and it failed again… couldn’t even see health on the bar for Teq when the timer expired so we were close but… it should not be this hard to kill these bosses… and if they are going to be this hard we need better rewards.

So you can have your opinion but mine is firmly in the “unbuff” category… (reversing the buff not nerfing).

And you cannot equate what a guild of several thousand co-ordinated and experienced world boss event farmers can do, to what a bunch of clueless pubbies SHOULD be able to do.

Axe really just needs to be completely reworked, and sadly i just don’t see this happening at all.
it needs to be melee, at least in my opinion. Only way I see it competing with anything. Take the vuln application if you want, it’s not applied quickly enough to be useful in tight situations. It’s honestly a bit frustrating to see a weapon so similar to ranger longbow to not get the same treatment.

How are you going to make it melee without overlapping the functionality of either the dagger or greatsword?

If that happens, what are we going to use when we need ranged power-type damage? Staff auto? That attack is even worse then axe 1.

[Forum Specialist] Specialization Update

in Necromancer

Posted by: Tobias.8632

Tobias.8632

Alright, you guys know the drill! How are the changes so far? Either answer these questions for me or just talk about what you feel is important to mention for Necromancer.

Specific questions:

  1. Blood line is clearly awesome. How’s the death line? Are you using it at all in non-minion master builds?
  2. Condi was thought to be really bad before everything came out. Have you tried out This build by Zombify? How did you like it?
  3. Have you been successfully running any odd builds such as minion master or bunker?
  4. Yes, I already have feedback on CC and Plague. I nearly ran lich on my terrormancer. I stopped mid fight to say in say chat to my enemies “Can we take a moment to recognize the fact that my Flesh Golem is literally not helping me at all?”

1. Death magic line is okay. If I was playing conditions I would take it for corrupter’s fervor. Thing is, there’s a reason I don’t play conditions

2. I haven’t tried that build, because I like my power wells build in pvp a lot more. The thing is, that’s pvp only. Necro conditions SUCK in pve. People report needing around 2000 condition damage rating before bleeds stop being pathetic and useless, and are still inferior to the kind of damage you can put out by walking up to something and instantly slapping it with zerker dagger auto. Other classes report that they can instantly put a burn on a target that starts going for 10,000 to 20,000 DAMAGE PER TICK. I tried it in the pvp lobby, set up a full condition build, and the highest bleed tick I could even get to using all of my skills was like 2,500 after 8+ seconds of scepter use, using the rabid amulet and affliction rune.

3. No, but I have met those builds, and they fall beneath the unstoppable killing power of the wellshroudzerker like anything else

4.Glad to hear it. Put pressure on people to fix minion AI.

I want to talk a little bit about the first tier of Soul Reaping traits.

First you have unyielding blast, which is great if you’re planning to spend a lot of time actually in shroud. Great for pvp to make sure what you’re targeting doesn’t get body blocked. If you want to use soul reaping in pve on a dagger zerker build though, you probably won’t use this.

Soul Marks. Staff trait. I don’t think anyone uses this outside of wvw. Staff is completely useless in pve, and the only reason people use it in pvp is for condition transfer and making their shroud autoattack stronger.

Speed of Shadows. No one uses this. Quickening thirst is just better. When you’re in shroud, your autoattack has massive range so you don’t even NEED to chase people. If you’re the kind of build that spends time in shroud, you’re never going to take this over Unyielding Blast. If you don’t spend time in shroud, you’re never going to take this because it does nothing for you. I would really like to see a more interesting bonus here combined with the reduced shroud cooldown.

Another thing about PvE, as a dagger zerker I kind of have to take the curses traitline because I NEED the Furious Demise minor. It is mandatory. This means I get two completely useless trait choices. Terrifying Decent, who cares. Plague sending, no condition output on this build. Chilling Darkness, only useful for reaper. Master of Corruption, no corruption skills. Path of Corruption, no boons to rip in PvE. Terror, no source of fear in this build except on fall damage which doesn’t happen in dungeons. It’s only when we get to the grandmaster trait we have Weakening Shroud which really synergizes with Furious Demise.

I would really like to see Furious Demise put in the Soul Reaping line. Better yet, put 5s of fury as the bonus on the Speed of Shadows trait. Or 5s of vigor would also be really really useful there. Forget everything I said and just put vigor on speed of shadows because necros need a source of vigor.

Banshee’s wail locust is a pretty good dps skill, and happens to be about the same duration as most pub boss kills. It’s a tough call to make.

A decent group shouldn’t really need the vamp aura though. The aoe prot, siphon, and healing from your wells is more then enough support, and also provides way more then the crappy aura.

Also didn’t get soul reaping because going into shroud is a dps loss, and that traitline adds nothing to dagger auto. The only thing you miss is the lich form trait. Better to get curses and use the old “flash DS quickly to get fury and weaken”. Weakening bosses can be a pretty good support thing. They’re definitely competitive options though.

I know there are many posts about the Consume Conditions changes but I couldn’t find a definitive answer to the following questions.

What if your Consume Conditions get interrupted?

It’s very common in PvP so I am wondering if:-

1. It will still go on full cool down (I am assuming yes).

2. You don’t remove any existing Conditions (I am assuming yes).

3. You will also get the 10 stacks of vulnerability added to whatever other conditions you already had.

4. If you slot the trait you also get the additional Condition?

If 3. and 4. apply that all seems a little unfair. Players are already well used to interrupting a Necro’s heal so this will give them all the more incentive to do so.

If consume conditions gets interrupted it does not go on cooldown. You can test this is the game right now by casting it and dodge rolling halfway through the cast time.

But if you’re a conditionmancer, you’ll be doing like 15000 dps and getting 10% of that as health every second

Kitten no, I love those big transformation ultimates

When you pop lich form, the inside of your brain turns into macho man randy savage and you scream OOOHHHH YEEEEEEH, WHO’S READY TO DIE, WHO’S READY TO SNAP INTO A SLIM JIM and then you shrek everything around you with those insane autoattacks. You are the destroyer of worlds and destroyer of kittenes who can instantly flip any spvp teamfight on its head if you pick the right moment when the enemies are distracted and have blown most of their cooldowns.

It doesn’t need to be complex for it to be incredibly fun and incredibly useful. If there’s any part of the balance changes I am glad about, it’s that they didn’t mention lowering the damage of lich form auto.

Also a lot of people seem to forget that we now have 22 seconds of lich form if you pick up the spectral trait. A heavy theme of this specializations update is that if you want something to be really good, you gotta get the traits, and you no longer miss out on 300 precision or power by picking one of the lower 3 trait lines.

How would you prevent this from breaking fights when a necro shows up to the fight with already full life force?

Like you literally have to kill a necro five times.
1. First full life force activation
2. Their health bar
3. They heal themselves and you have to take down their health bar again
4. At some point in the health bar phase they used spectral armor and have full life force again, so now you have to go through death shroud a second time
5. Now you have to fight a downstate necro, which may be a considerable problem for you depending on whether you still have access to some kind of guaranteed stomp

And you’re telling me you want to add:
6. When you kill the downstate necro, he pops back up into death shroud and you have to wipe out his life force again before he finally dies for real

We have yet to see how much health per second we’ll be able to get with siphon on hit from minor trait + siphon on hit from aura.

Seems they want consume conditions to be a skill that only “conditionmancer” builds use and they’ll have access to dagger 4.

We need to see how good well of blood is with all the well traits and etc. The normal “powermancer” is already a primarily wells build relying on well of corruption and well of suffering as their main DPS utilities. The only reason no one calls it a “wellmancer” is because the current blood magic sucks so no one picks up the wells traits.

The fact that necro got such a mixed bag of nerfs and buffs was kind of insulting when other classes who are already stronger got straight buffs all around though.

Plague form’s self bleeding is godkitten ridiculous.

I’d like to believe that, upon seeing the finalized necro changes, Robert killed everyone in the studio with a hammer and that’s why we didn’t get the rest of the stream.

Would love to get a view on the devs’ decision making process
