Most non braindead people play the game to have fun. Not as a way to replace their jobs grinding gear in order to have fun.
I play WvW 90%+ of the time, I didn’t even participate in the deadeye gold farming that much. I lost out. I don’t complain about it because it didn’t negatively affect my PvP performance by not doing it.
I complain about Ascended weapons because it means I have to farm champs in those awful champ rotations all day. Hoping that I get exos or ascended drops in WvW on a t5 server is akin to hoping god turns my morning kittens into gold. Just so I don’t hold back my team by not having the best gear available.
You make this sound worse than it is. In wvw, you already kill champs. There is no requirement for you to farm champs like TC does in Orr. Also, you can get exotic weapons simply through buying them with badges. And if you play wvw a lot you should have plenty of badges. And if you make money in wvw, then you can buy them off the TP.
You make it sound much better than it is.
In WvW, you kill champs only if/when you take a tower. Exotic weapons can’t be bought with just badges; you need gold as well. Where do you get that gold from? The amount of money you make in WvW is insignificant compared to PvE, which means TP prices are a much higher percentage of your wealth compared to a PvE player.
Also, those weapons aren’t salvagable. Just sayin’
“Only 2 weeks.” =-/
Not all that acceptable.
The whole Ascended gear thing has always alienated a certain portion of the userbase because it works against the way they play the game. I have personally tried to get this message across, and to offer ideas on a course correction so that players like me won’t feel ignored or alienated, but there just hasn’t been enough progress on the developer’s end.
And I really want this discussion to happen. Don’t get this off-track or closed or ignored due to conspiracy theories and bad behavior.
I really don’t think there’s anything left to say. I feel like I’ve been trying and trying to make my point and explain that they are ruining the game for me. It was a great game. Then it was a good game. Now it’s not either.
If you’ve really only been playing for about 30 days and you don’t like it you can get a refund.
Each rune set gets updated. Travelers runes grant all stats, condition damage, boon duration and movement speed.

The blog post already says Ascended weps will drop in these chests and you choose the stat combo/weapon too.
They won’t drop often enough to matter. I’ve see maybe 1 exotic drop a month.
Maybe give option get these items free without any work. Those who like to grind could grind sake of grinding.
That makes sense to me.
<rant>But you see grinders need a reason to grind. And it can’t be a long grind for a legendary or a skin, it has to be just the right kind of grind.
Also grinding isn’t fun unless you make everyone else do it to. How else can you show your l33t skillz?
</rant> <disappointment>
Having watched the livestream, I have to say that yes. this will kill both build variety and alts. I didn’t see the recipes very well, but it looks like it will take about 5-10 days to craft a weapon, minimum.
You can’t do that anymore. At least not immediately. You have to prioritize 1 build and 1 weapon set. (Oh, and of course, 1 character.)
Yeah, isn’t that awesome. See the green sword. It’s a condition warrior.
What a whiny bunch of entitled kittens.
You’re an abusive Alkaholic. Maybe meeting would help.
o grow up u had 1 year whit exotic only what do you like to play this game 10 years whit the gear from day 1 that u made ? no progres at all in gear ? shallow thing for mmo dont u think
Its fascinating whom ANet caters to.
I’m guessing they cater to MMO players. Sorry GW1 players, no gearing up in the first 3 months of the game then doing pointless fluff content for the next 10 years.
As I see we still have people who don’t understand vertical progression, I’ll play.
Everything you need to know about VP can be found in the words that make up the concept: Vertical, the power level of the game increases; Progression, it continually increases over time.
And, VP can be described by an integer series: 1,2,3,4,5,…n where each number represents a new tier of ever more powerful gear. Upon inspection we can see that the participation in the process is mandatory, not optional. It makes no difference whether the difference between 1 & 2 is material. Vertical progression does not progress by stopping. It is self evident that eventually you will not be able to play the game if you are not grinding it out on the treadmill.
Ever wonder why they call it a gear treadmill? Here’s why: everyones at power X and new gear with more power drops, let’s call it power level Y. Everyone jumps on the treadmill. When they get off everyone’s at power level Y. Meanwhile, the environment has attained power level Y as well. Before and after the treadmill ride there is no relative difference between player and player (if they rode the treadmill and they really had no choice) or player and environment. In reality they have gone nowhere; they’ve just been exercised on a non-optional treadmill.
That’s all well and good for hamsters, but players in 2013 are realizing more and more that the emperor of treadmills has no clothes. We want more from our gaming than a mandatory treadmill ride. Vertical progression is an old answer to the question of making an engaging MMO. We’re ready for a new kind of MMO.
Question is what happens when this self proclaimed “MMO players” get their ascended set.
ANet caved in not even 3 months after release. How long will it take to cave in after ascended. My prediction: they already plan for next tier.
The only way to avoid it will be legendary tier. And we know fastest way to legendary.
We know what will happen. Same thing that happened when they got their Exotic set. They will cry for more gear. ANet only bought themselves a year.
Hopefully, for those who stick around, the introduction of new skills that you have to earn will stop the need for further gear.
Witty repartee aside. I think they said that they are going to but T7 mats into some of the jumping puzzle chests.
Weapon Strength has a major effect on damage alone. Trinkets weren’t half as bad since they only carried stats.
The difference between just changing a rare dagger to an exotic dagger: negligible stat difference but 15-20% damage output difference.
More info here (my informative posts never get commented on and thus ignored):
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Stat-effects-of-Weapons-vs-Trinkets/first#post2732230They haven’t posted Ascended weapons yet so it’s unconfirmed whether that is the case. It’s also one item slot and the problem would be with Ascended weapons specifically, not with the rest of the gear. 11% stat increase is a lot less than you think it is.
Because they are multiplicative, a 11% power increase and an 11% weapon strength increase results in at least a 23% damage increase.
If you also increase precision by 11% you get a 32% damage increase.
For example:
Weapon Damage 1000
Power 2146
Precision 1876
Crit Change .405
Crit Damage 90%
Against 1900 armor
Give 1770.5 expected damage.Weapon Power of 1110
Power 2382
Precision 2082
Crit Change 48.5%
Crit Damage 90%
against armor 1900
Gives an expected damage of 2336which is 30% more.
Now I don’t think those will be the numbers, but the effect can be bigger than you think.
I was only aiming to demonstrate the effects of Weapon Strength difference to show how big of a deal Ascended Weapon is compared to the effects of Ascended Trinkets to the naysayers.
Your ‘new stats’ is also incorrect, I think you are wrongly multiplying the base stats AND the weapon up by 11%, remember base stats at lvl 80 is 916 so your ‘ascended’ power should be 2281 if you are using that example etc.
Right. My bad. In my example it’s only a 25% increase. The main problem is that any change to weapon damage is multiplicative to all other stats. So a 10% increase to weapon damage is a 10% increase to damage across the board.
Yeah, I think we’ll see a shift with the next balance patch. Necros, Spirit Rangers, and Perma-stun warriors will most likely all get nerfed.
This has gone on far longer than usual because of the Pax tournament.
Have faith. Mesmer’s ruled the meta for months, this is just a small blip.
You can always make a non-human mesmer. Either asura or charr both sort of (at least for me) move beyond gender into just “odd”.
I’ve also never seen anyone say someone who plays a mesmer is girly.
“You can please some of the people some of the time all of the people some of the time some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time” – Abraham Lincoln
—snip—
This misquote is very funny to me because of the unintentional (????) juxtaposition of “please” and “fool”.
What a game designer should do is try to address the root cause of the problem and not adjust the game based on collective intelligence (not a fan).
The amount of gold you have only matters relative to the general population. People should have been asking for increased drops of desired material. Instead, in their wisdom, they asked for gold.
“Gee, if I could just farm more gold I could buy Dusk, it’s only 700g”
The problem is that if everyone gets more gold the price of Dusk rises. (now it’s 800g)
They should have thought “Gee, if Dusk would only drop more often I could afford it with what I have.”
However, I agree that ANet is in a difficult position. They can’t please everyone. Sometimes it seems like they can’t please anyone.
I think this MMO has, up to now, done a good job at holding onto a center. People who want raids have left (or will leave), people who didn’t want gear progression have left (or will leave), people who don’t like casual content have left (or will leave). Etc…
This leaves a core or people who are satisfied with the current “a little of everything” approach.
The main challenge I see about this is that there’s no core set of values or desires that holds the group together.
To use an metaphor, if you cater to the political far right, the left leaves but you basically know what your constituency wants. If you cater to the political far left, the right leaves but you basically know what your constituency wants. It you cater to the center, the far right and far left leave, but everytime you announce a policy someone is going to be upset, either a moderate right or a moderate left.
(edited by TooBz.3065)
That’s an interesting problem. Divorcing kit damage from weapon damage suggests that Engineers will either instantly get access to Ascended level damage or never will.
Just read a few post and a new thought comes into my mind. Basically 2 questions:
1. Can ascended gear/weapon satisfy those who want vertical progression on equipments?
2. Do casual players rage about the incoming ascended weapon?
If no to 1 and yes to 2, profit?
1. No. For all the reasons above.
2. Players who rage about ascended gear are the ones were looking for a social game that did not include a gear grind. Casual MMO players will not care.
Weapon Strength has a major effect on damage alone. Trinkets weren’t half as bad since they only carried stats.

I honestly hope the wvw reveals will be of biblical proportions. If they just show orbs… it will be very disappointing. I am waiting for new maps..maybe map rotation 1map/month from a total of X maps…and this is just an example.
As for content…i am tired of lackluster content that takes 2 days to finish. I want real content that makes u think it changes the whole world. Like adding a A FEW new zones not just 1…adding new mobs…maybe a new race. New armors…new story.
Not 1 time stories that really don’t have that much of an impact….more then a “girlie with atention issues” that attacks everything with cool robots for a limited time. That’s not epic..that’s just temporary fun…and it really was fun…for those 2-3 days.
The only WvW announcement that could excite me is if gear in WvW is capped at exotic.
Thanks for putting this together, my theorycrafting indicated the difference would be much smaller, 5% instead of 20%.
The Exotic dagger had the damage of : 923-981
The Rare dagger had the damage of: 818-869
Which is about 6% better. But the numbers you show are about 16% better in terms of damage.
Any idea why that happened?
Why did achievement chests blew you away? Its giving your the same crap with every chest. The only thing im hyped is the ascended weapons but not for the increased stat but the changeable stats (is it even possible or for legendary weps only?) and want to see how they look. I will ignore SAB as i did the first time because i want to play with my character using the skills assigned to that character and not become Mario with a wooden stick that attacks rabbits. So what will happen after update is me getting the ascended crap (whatever time it takes i dunno) and go wvw cuz they aren’t adding anything else worth mentioning
It blew me away because I was expecting rewards like the pathetic WvW rank chests: a green, a couple of silver, and maybe something else like fine transmutation stones or something equally ridiculous. They were better than that.
For me Tuesday seems like a huge deal for the game.
Everything they’ve posted seems like it’s likely to be the end of the world. But I had such low expectations of the achievement chests and they completely blew me away, so I’m oddly hopeful that thinks may not be as bad as I think they are going to be.
It makes me wish we could get a real preview.
Move away from gold?
Most farmers will attest that you can make about 5 gold an hour farming champs. If you spent an entire 8-hour day farming, you’d be lucky to clear 40 gold (assuming the train lasts all day, which many times it doesn’t)
Is that seriously your counter-argument? Farm for 8 hours a day to make 40 gold?
40 gold is $10. You’re telling people it’s perfectly okay to farm at a rate of $1.25/hr because as we all know, farming is not ‘fun’ its a chore, it’s work.
This is exactly the reason I won’t farm. It’s boring. I don’t understand how people can spend hours running from champ to champ, but apparently some people have a stronger constitution than I do.
Everyone screamed for more ways to make gold and they got what they asked for. There’s more gold in the system and at least short term inflation is the result.
They should have been screaming for a better drop rate on items, but people can be foolish.
Here’s the endgame.

No for all of you that have a disagreement on the ascended stuff. How many of you own an ascended item? We knew back in November they were going to keep adding ascended to the game, if you was against it, then you shouldn’t have gotten any in the time frame because it is against your playing style, correct? I have a feeling group A and group C are closer in size then you may want to admit. Then you figure group B into this as not caring either way, and what ever direction ANET decides to go with the majority will be on there side because of group B. You can’t discount them, because which ever way ANET chooses to do something the majority will always be on their side.
Just my two cent and opinion.
Just because I hate ascended gear doesn’t mean I’m not going to get them if they are out there. You act like I should have refused to pursue and obvious (an unnecessary) advantage based on “play style.” Which to me is ridiculous.
That said, I have refused to do more than dailies / monthlies, I don’t run fractals (so rings are in short supply and back pieces are almost non-existent), etc.. The ascended pieces I have I obtained by playing the game mostly the way I want, with some adjustments (for example, dailies, guild missions, etc…).
Right, im going to resist screaming at your insane post -_-
1. ascended is not waaaaaay better than exotic its a small bonus and mainly beneficial for agony resistance.
2. you dont mine chop or sickle the new materials they are drops and rewards that are timegated.
3.no t6 is used for the levels leading up to 400 the new levels will use t7 until reaching ascended
1. If the leaked ascended stats from Twilight or whatever from earlier this year are correct, then ascended weapons give at least 5% more damage / hit. Which is the same as a superior sigil of force. Up to you if you think that’s significant or not.
2. True
3. We have no idea how crafting to 500 will work, anything we say is purely speculation.
It is both, no ambiguity.
Yeah, I think your right. The additional adjective threw me off. For example, if they said we are introducing recipes and materials to find around the world, it would be clearer.
With any luck they’ll be in BL chests!
Lol. And if you don’t get one you get a piece of one that you can assemble using “scotch tape” which will be available for purchase in the gem store.
Oh well, we’ll find out on Tuesday. I was just trying to figure out if ascended recipes are discoverable or if they are going to have to be found like the Celestial ones.
The Weaponsmith, Artificer, and Huntsman crafting disciplines have
a new skill cap of 500. We’re introducing new recipes and new materials to be found around the world! Craft your way to 500 to become a Grandmaster Crafter and to learn the secrets of crafting Ascended weapons!
I love the ambiguity of imprecise grammar. Does this mean that recipes will be found around the world or only new materials?
My sylvari mesmer is feeling fairly original now.
They do have higher base damage. We saw this back in November when they accidentally buffed legendary weapons to their ascended tier stats. This was quickly patched, but the information was already out.
A greatsword went from 995-1100 to around 1045-1150, a 50 point (approx) increase to the base damage. That’s about 4-5% in just the base damage, the +stats were also increased by an amount comparable to other ascended gear.
If they implement in that way, the ascended weapons will be a must to have. Unlike the trinkets.
Depending on the way to get them, I’ll just leave the game if they implement in that way and be time gated.
I’ll I will not care if they only get a +10/5/5 status boost (or something like that). But again, we have no information of how it’ll be. I’m really concerned…
I hope that base increase is gone, too. But I expect it to still be there when these new weapons show up next week. And a blog post earlier this summer already stated that the new materials will be account bound and daily limited.
The only way around the timegate will be legendaries, so legendaries will now have a somewhat pay2win factor to them. This is, of course, very limited buy the extreme cost/effort of a legendary, but it is still there. Those that already have legendary weapons will have a definite advantage over those that do not until the timegating allows others to obtain ascended weapons.
Well tell me whats the point getting ascended weapon if their damage will be on par with exotic? +3 power bonuses? Anyone im asking ingame is actually happy thakittens coming out..Forums seems to think different. I don’t know..will 50 more atk change a lot? In pure zerker in actually getting 3962 attack with bloodlust stacks and 0 might.
I don’t think damage works this way. Because damage is (simplistically) power * weapon damage, if weapon damage goes up by 5% your total damage goes up by 5%.
For example, assume weapon damage goes up by 50 and say power goes up to by 10 points.
So before you were had a power of 2962 and a weapon damage of 1000.
Now you have a power of 2972 and a weapon damage of 1050.
Because damage is multiplicative. Your old base was 2962*1000 or 2962000. You new base is 2972 * 1050 or 3120600.
Which is a 5.3% increase in damage.
Edit: Ninja’ed while I played with math.
I’m waiting until Tuesday, but I hear you.
I hate ascended items. I have them.
But I also build each and everyone or my builds around the ascended gear I have. I don’t get new ascended gear, I adjust the exotics to compensate.
for example.
Here’s my version of Osicat’s Mist Mesmer 2.0
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fgAQNAsdWl0zipXUToGb9IiJFEHyh6B2BefXJF82FC-jEzAYMBRKCEZBgIAm8W0a2Lg1sioxqXw0nAKXFZtLq3ADA-w
Here is my version of Osicats Heavy Mesmer 3.0. http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fgAQNAsdWl0zipXUToGb9IiJFEHyh6B4hdfXJF82FC-jEzAYMBRSUgICgJ/Am9iWCMpVwioxqXw0nAKXFZtLq3ADA-w
And here is my PvE mesmer
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fgAQNAsdRl0zipXUToGb9ICqHYn29dkU0apWJF82FC-j0yAYLBRKCEZBgKAm8KiGbNrIas6FM9JgyVRW7i6NwAA-w
In each case, all trinkets are exactly the same.
Now when ascended weapons come out, I guess each weapon will be exactly the same. when ascended armor comes out nothing will ever change except traits.
Sounds like fun.
LOL, you know what i find hilarious? The fact that ascended was first meant to be so you could handle doing higher levels fractal, but anet hasnt touched fractals since their release. In fact, they completely ignored them in their dungeon “revamp”.
I have a feeling ascended will be needed for more then fractals because they seem to not even care about fractals at this point.
What about people who don’t like Fractals and just want the higher stats? Anet seems not to care about those people either.
Fractals are a poor attempt at a classic “endgame”. GIVING MOBS/BOSSES MORE HEALTH DOESNT MAKE IT HARDER ANET.
And whats the point in having higher stats if there is nothing to use it on?
WvW.
Like you said, Fractals aren’t harder, just more annoying and takes longer which is why I don’t do it.
And WvW is 90% zerging, where having ascended instead of exotics really wont matter.
Why does everyone keep saying this? I don’t think WvW provides some kind of herd immunity from ascended gear.
The gear itself I could live with….if this is it and we’re not heading to a gear treadmill every few months. I don’t expect any builds to die because of it, presumably diff stat combos are available like current ascended.
The time-gated is what kills me. I don’t have a ‘main’. I have 5 characters levelled to 80 in full exotics that I played pretty well equally. Just depended on the mood I was in and what I wanted to do. So, I kept them all geared and equally ready to jump into whatever. It’s not OCD, as someone said, to want to keep them at the top of their game to be able to jump into whatever I want to do with them. Getting exotics was very alt-friendly. Time-gated crafting would suck for this. And depending on the stat upgrades, may not even bother with.
If we can outright buy the finished crafted product though and I can just pay to outfit my characters with this new gear……then thats different. Is this confirmed? Or is this stuff account/soul-bound on aquire? Or still an unknown?
Having never experienced a real gear treadmill, I’m probably totally off base, but since ascended amulets came out (I ignored the rings because I dislike fractals) I have been constantly working toward getting gear for my characters. To me, I feel like I’m on a treadmill.
What difference does it make if a complete set of BiS gear comes out every three months or if a new BiS item comes out every three months? I’m still always chasing BiS gear with no end.
People as always overreact. The same was happening when they released ascended trinkets..We won’t see anytime soon highter tier than ascended, by that time everyone will get it.
As for alts i don’t have any in current state but i do plan to make them and guess what? I will be running them in exotics as i don’t see the point why i should put ascended gear on something i barely use anyway.
As for cof old times, i been running them with ppl that dindt had a single ascended trinket and noone complained about it, nor i don’t rebember anyone getting kicked for that reason. And i did over 1000x runs
When they introduced Ascended Trinkets I had five character that I used regularly. Now, I have two. So, for me, ascended trinkets already started limiting alts. Also, ascended trinkets are much better for power specs than they are for condition specs. So that helped kill build diversity.
If you look at history extrapolate and voice your concerns you are not overreacting.
Yeah, it’s all speculation at this point.
It’s possible that T7 materials could be made by combining T1-T4 materials, or T2-T5 materials or a lot of T6 materials. All it said was T7 materials would be made by combining lower tier materials.
In terms of preparation, I plan to start drawing on my retirement fund.
It looks like a mesmer with a sword attacks about 2 times / second (at most).
For the 38.1 percent the sigil will usually (remember it’s random) trigger within 6 swings after cooldown. At 41.9 percent the sigil will usually trigger within 6 swings after cooldown. (the exact number is that on the there is a 48% chance that the sigil won’t trigger in the first 6 swings for the 38.1% and a 44% chance that the sigil won’t trigger in the first 6 swings).
But basically you will generally get the same or similar effect from the sigil for both amounts. But let’s assume you get it after 6 swings on the lower precision and 5 swings on the higher precision. That means the with lower you trigger once every 8 seconds (5 second cooldown) or every 16 swings for an average of 52 pts / swing. On the higher you trigger once every 7.5 seconds, or every 15 swings for an average of 54 points / swing.
So you’re still better off with more power.
Note: my math and / or assumptions may be wrong, but I think it’s right.
It’s not. The optimal critical percentage chance depends entirely upon your power and crit damage percent.
You also have to look at what you are giving up in order to gain additional precision. If you look at a straight beserker build with 2094 power and 1623 precision (38.1% crit chance) and (no traits yet) and 60% crit damage you have an expected damage against 2600 armor of 1143. That’s 79 points of precision away from 41.9% crit chance.
If you increase power by 79 you get an expected damage of 1186
If you increase precision by 79 you get an expected damage of 1177
Therefore, you are better off with the lower precision and more power.
There’s also on crit sigils to consider. But this further depends on attack rate of the weapon, the amount of certainty you want that the effect will trigger. The cooldown of the sigil, etc…
(edited by TooBz.3065)
You have no more reasonable basis for saying “most of the players do not care” than we do for saying they do.
Oh, i actually agree with that points. Most of the players do not care – but it doesn’t matter because those players will never get ascended gear anyway. What does matter is whether the number of players that want ascended gear is bigger or smaller than the number of people that are against it. From what i have seen so far, it’s the second – there seems to be way more people against ascended than those that want them.
Yeah, ok. I see that.
The other aspect that everyone is ignoring is that this may be introduced for the Chinese market. We may only be incidentally affected.
Ascended gear has 8% higher stats than exotic, not enough to make a difference when only your trinkets and weapons have that 8% higher boost. When you factor in that everyone still has exotic armor, overall your stat boost only becomes 5.2% higher, essentially the difference of using consumables versus an equal opponent who doesn’t use consumables.
Or a superior sigil of force.
fellyn’s trolling, ignore him.
Trolling because I disagree? Right.
Trolling because I think you deliberately misread the thread. Also because you dismissively said “next complaint” at the end of your next post.
fellyn’s trolling, ignore him.
If there was an actual majority of players speaking out against Ascended gear for the 10 months since it was first introduced, do you really think that Anet would alienate most of their player base by continuing to move forward with plans to introduce something they hate?
Considering that the ascended gear from the very beginning was aimed at a tiny “dedicated” minority of players (mostly locust content that already left the game) and offered absolutely nothing for the playerbase this game was originally designed for? Yep, they knew they would alienate a large part of their playerbase, but either didn’t care, or thought that they can afford that because that part of the playerbase currently does not have anywhere else to go.
Also, the whole RNG box mess clearly shown, that Anet does not have any problem with introducing things that most of the community at least strongly dislikes, if they think they can get away with it.Most of the players do not care about this one way or the other. If they want to acquire the items they do so, if they don’t then they just ignore it. The game does not change when you do this.
You have no more reasonable basis for saying “most of the players do not care” than we do for saying they do. If we can’t make kitten up neither can you. At this point I think you’re just trolling and trying to get people to quit the game.
You know its funny – 7 or so months after we got ascended accessories we actually can outfit most of our characters with all ascended accessories (just as some had predicted) and we aren’t complaining about it so much. It would be funny if it only took 5 days of time gate per ascended 1 handed weapon or 10 for a 2 handed. Then 1 month = 6 hands of ascended weapons. Even for a guy like me with alts that’s only around 1 month per character. But still – feels like altaholics are being punished haha.
If you do fractals and you do guild missions, and dailies and monthlies then yes. You can outfit a reasonable number of characters. But if you don’t do exactly what ANet decided was going to be the most rewarding way to play you’re out of luck.
