Two points.

First, it’s probably RNG. Humans a prewired to see patterns even where there are none. People have speculated that this is because detecting a false pattern (assuming that the rustle is a tiger when it’s nothing) is better than not detecting a true pattern (assuming that the rustle is nothing when it’s a tiger). That’s not perfectly said, but you get the point.

Here is a real intersting talk about it. http://www.ted.com/talks/michael_shermer_the_pattern_behind_self_deception.html
The other think that he Michael Shermer says is that people tend to see more patterns when they feel out of control. So RNG, is the worst for that.

Now, I think anyone interested in maintaining customer satisfaction would take that into account. But that’s just me.

Second, the “successes of the few are paid for my the many” is exactly what will eventually make me quit this game.

And the people who don’t like dungeons, which is a relatively large percentage of the population? What about those people…or don’t they count?

Everyone in this game only cares about their own playstyle. That includes the poster, you, me, and everyone else. They can post ideas of what would seem like a good solution to them, but they can’t post what would be a good solution to you (as they enjoy different things).

However, they get their say, and Lord knows that you and I get our say. I think ANet is smart enough to take all the ideas and think them through.

PvE is killing WvW

You are not supposed to spend all your time in WvW. It’s just one part of the game, and unfortunately not a lucrative one, neither for Arena Net nor for you.

I agree that this is the way ANet view things. However, I think it’s stupid. I would think that ANet should want WvW enthusiasts preaching WvW, PvE enthusiasts preaching PvE, and PvP enthusiasts preaching PvP.

You don’t want to force the WvW community into PvE, they don’t like it and won’t have a good time.

You want a new player, everywhere they go and for everything they try, to find a group of people who are happy and excited about what’s going on.

How to destroy a server morale

There are so many ways that the new matchups demoralize players lower tier servers. Nothing like taking Crystal Desert and making if fight Fort Aspenwood two weeks in a row, let alone making Sea of Sorrows fight Tarnished Coast for three weeks straight.

The problem isn’t just of off hours stuff, it’s being outmanned and outmatched constantly.

Everything depends on implementation. I think there will be plenty of time to moan and complain about the new ascended gear and crafting when more details are released.

I may not be very bad. If it’s character bound (HA) it may be good for people with alts. I’d love to see someone create throwaway alts and craft them up to 500 (probably not going to happen). On the other hand, it may be so bad that I quit when it comes out. We simply do not know.

Regardless people need to make their voices heard, if no one says anything the worst will happen. At least if enough ppl complain they might take notice.

Yeah, but I’m pretty sure that no matter what we say the gear will take a long time to get and people with alts will get kittened. Therefore, I see no point in providing feedback, they haven’t listened so far (or at least they haven’t listened to people like me.) Therefore, I assume I am in the minority and they don’t care about my business.

Trading post outbid text alert programs

TooBz.3065

Think you are missing the point…

Lets say as an example that we have two competing parties for one item, one of them have access to an automated tool that alerts him when he is overbid and the other has not.

You forgot that all the outside automated tools so far that we mentioned are free and available to everyone. It is no excuse to claim that they have no access to it because that is not true!

If the other party chooses not to use them then that is his loss, and shouldn’t be forcing his choice onto others. In others words, if I am too lazy to even look up the wiki or gw2spidy, I shouldn’t be forcing others not to look it up as well.

If you want a more specific example, download Zicore’s TP notifier app http://notifier.zicore.de/

It is free and open source but don’t say that you have no access to it because you know that is simply not true.

Not sure what you are responding too, the example I wrote was a specific one to show the benefit of using a third party tool it had nothing todo with whether that tool is available to both parties or not (which wasn’t an disussion point in the post I made my reply to).

edit: and why should I use a program someone else wrote, its more fun writing it yourself

The point is if everyone has access to the same programs/tools then nobody can claim that it is unfair that they do not have access to them.

There is no unfair advantage going on here. The only thing that is unfair would be that some people are more lazy than others. People who are too lazy to install/learn to use these tools themselves. They prefer to come in the forums just to complain about others, who have gained an advantage over them through due diligence.

If I can learn how to use Zicore’s tool, why can’t someone else? It is not as if only I have the special privileges to download it from his website because anyone can do the same.

You could say exactly the same thing about a botting program.

RNG broken. Love the game, think I'm done.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

TooBz.3065

there is no streak-breaking code. I’ve rolled 5 superior sigils in a row before (from majors).
to answer your question: you’re missing some info.
first, those people who show you the 3 precursors they’ve had thrown at them by Zommoros don’t tell you about the 2,000 other rolls that gave nothing, or the 1500g they paid to just buy them and make you feel bad, or the [&AgHddwAA] they copy/paste to display a item even if they don’t have it.
second, random is not even distribution. there are going to be clumps. If there aren’t, it’s not random. I may of had 5 successes in a row, but you better believe that the next 30 rolls after that gave nothing.
If someone tells you, for example, that it takes about 100 rolls to get a precursor, know that that is average. some people will get it in 2, and some will get it in 198 (note that the average between those two is 100).
RNG is not broken. what you expect out of it is. go ahead and hate it, but what you describe is a successfully implemented random number generation.

Sure. Humans are naturally “programmed” to look for and see patterns even when there aren’t any. Other people lie and overstate their success because… err… because they are kittens??? Idk.

However, I do think that there’s a problem with a model that is so stingy with rewards. Look at it this way. I play these games as an escape from reality. Video games allow me to play the role of the hero.

The hero is suppose to find the rare item, obtain the precursor, forge the legendary weapon, slay the dragon, get the cool skin, earn loads of money, etc…

But not in an MMO (or at least this MMO). In an MMO you’re just a schlub. They call you the “hero of shaemoor” but really, you’re a schlub.

So if you enjoy the game play and can treat it like chess or checkers or a non-loot driven single player game, then you’ll be fine.

If you want to earn loot like playing Diablo then you should go elsewhere.

The answer lies in the type of random number generator they use but ANET will never give a definitive on it. Pseudo random number generators using a FIXED seed will return the same set of repeating results over a given period of time. Since that seed number is fixed and more then likely fixed to the account and not per character you may very well have one person getting one set of results while another gets a different set and since both sets REPEAT themselves after so many rolls the first person could be luckier then the second but it has noting at all to do with luck and everything to do with that fixed seed.

There is a very clear explanation on the above problems with fixed seed rng’s here if you scroll down to the heading “Setting Seeds”.

http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/28548/Pitfalls-in-Random-Number-Generation

I’m not going to find the thread because the search is broken. But ANet has said that there is not account or character based information used in the seed.

You will never convince ANet or anyone else that your aren’t just unlucky.

Ascended rings: "unique"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: TooBz.3065

TooBz.3065

but you did not ask yourself, why just this items has unique?
1. Your really didnt read
2. You read it and thought it was nothing special

An Ascended item is unique in itself. They don’t drop in OW, that’s unique enough.
1. I did read.
2. Exactly, because unique doesn’t have a unique meaning. It has multiple definitions – none of which would give a hint of one being able to use merely one ring. However, “unique” could be understood as there only being one ring in existence – which fell flat when I could purchase a second ring.

Why are you even trying to give me language lectures when your very own grammar, spelling and sentence structure fall short? Just let it go and accept “Unique.” as a vague description.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Unique

There’s almost no reason not to have the Wiki opened when you’re playing Guild Wars, or Guild Wars 2. Whether it’s one hour, or ten is irrelevant. Knowledge is power, as they say. You wouldn’t buy a car without doing a little research on it, right?

So, in my opinion, you should “Just let it go and accept” that you didn’t read, or bother to take one minute to check the Wiki, and you got bit by it.

Never accept that as an excuse. File a ticket and ask nicely.

There are always people who will try to convince you that whatever went wrong is your fault (usually when dealing with auto repair people but it also happens on the oh-so-supportive forums). This is not the case. It is not your fault, it’s bad implementation.

The mere fact that the same kitten topic appears every month should clue ANet in that there’s a problem.

How does ArenaNet want GW2 to be played?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: TooBz.3065

TooBz.3065

ANet has a very heavy hand when it comes to encouraging people to do different things.

10 days to an ascended ring in fractals, 35 days otherwise (25+250 badges (which has stopped dropping btw)).
Two weeks of guild missions (+5g) to get ascended accessories or 40 days + 50 ectos.
Grind fractals for a backpiece or grind out a motherlode of T6 materials and ectos.

When they make a change to encourage specific behavior they don’t kid around. It sometimes becomes very difficult to play the game you like and not the game they want you to like.

However, they are also upgrading the reward system a piece at a time. This is probably due to development constraints. They over-increased rewards for champions recently, which is why we have a farm.

But really there is only three options here. First, this gets corrected at a future date, second we have crazy inflation, or three they add additional gold sinks so you have to champion farm.

I’m guessing it will be fixed.

2. if GW2 were to implement a direct trading system where people didn’t have to worry about getting scammed then the producer could sell directly to the consumer and you’d probably see less profit come out of flipping.

Without a trading post the fraction of wealth siphoned off by traders would dwarf what you currently see in game.

Can you explain why? And I’m not saying no trading post, just that there be a trading post and also another outlet where, if people are unhappy with the pricing they can go elsewhere. (Again, not advocating, just saying that the system we operate in is not the only potential system out there)

I think that part of the problem may be that looking at any particular stat ignores the overall effect. For example, is your attack power 12% more and your defense 12% less. In which case the aggregate may be more than the sum of its parts.

Essentially, I’m taking your suggestion seriously and thinking it through.

The damage difference between a fully stacked Bleed stack (assuming you’re the one to own all 25 stacks) is 200 dps.

Full damage bleed stack differences are (since you guys are so keen on this point and this point only):
Bleeding 25 stacks: 1575 dps vs 1775 dps

It’s more that I’m trying to figure out why I’m reluctant to view greens as a reasonable substitute for ascended gear during a testing and development phase of a build. (Bleeds are just an easy way to look at it.)

Looking at what you’ve said so far, it seems like 8 pts / tick difference or about 12% in overall damage.

Of course, the next question is, is that 12% significant enough to mess up testing.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Nice selective math you have there. You say 63 vs 71 is negligible for bleeding? How about a 200 damage per tick? Because that’s the difference when you’re talking about 25 stacks. Expect that to more than double once you add armor weapon and runes. That is not negligible, period. /thread (lol at tryhards who actually use that like it means something.)

And how often can you hold 25 stacks of Bleeding? If you’ve already crafted your build to be able to maintain 25 stacks of Bleeding, then you should be working on your Ascended trinkets, not dillydallying in the sand with your Masterworks.

I’ll say it plainly for you to understand:

Use Masterwork items to test your build and refine your stat selection.

Use Exotics/Ascended once you’re comfortable with your build and selection.

Two points:
1) How often do you only hold one bleeding stack? The damage difference is somewhere between 200 and 8 depending on the stacks. I would say it will usually be around 64-100 / second.

2) We don’t know what ascended armor will look like. But right now, trinkets make up a little less than half of all the stat points. So it’s reasonable to assume that ascended weapons and armor will make a bleeding tick difference increase from 8 to 16ish. or 16-400 / second. Probably somewhere between 128 and 200 typically.

Heart of the Mists is inadequate because if I where to ask you to find me a setup that replicates, Berserker chest, leggings and shoulders, Knights helm, gloves and boots. Lets give all players all they want.. Because they are inclined to play the game their way. I WANT 3 LEGENDARIES NAOW.

Anet Why do I have to even play you’r game? Why are you forcing me to play this game?

This attitude, really… I get it for accesories. But armor? Really?

You are not interpreting my thread right, no one is asking for anything right now. I just want flexibility on the things I acquire.

Did you know on my guardian, I have many sets of gear.

1. Soldier’s armour with soldier runes
2. Soldier’s armour with boon duration runes
3. Knight’s armour with soldier runes

1. Soldier trinkets with ruby orbs
2. Ascended celestials

1. Soldier greatsword with sigil of fire
2. Soldier greatsword with sigil or perception
3. Knights greatsword with sigil of accuracy
4. Berserker greatsword with sigil of fire

Like yourself; I would rather play a game were the most skilled warriors are the wealthiest rather than the day traders who play spreadsheets.

The only time the “most skilled warriors” are the wealthiest members of a given society is when those warriors kill people and take their wealth. Since GW2 doesn’t allow player killing or taking of a player’s inventory, your ideal anarchy state isn’t feasible (or desireable, really).

You see, there is very little economic value to killing. In fact, I would argue that it normally results in a net economic loss since killers produce nothing of value and are essentially “stealing” to survive. By killing producers, the killers harm the economy as a whole.

Sure, if you view GW2 as a model for real life (which apparently some do.) Trading and being the middle man always produces more money that being a producer. But, of course, this is a game, where the normal rules of society do not necessarily apply.

There will be no change to the TP, there will be no change to the way you all make your money, but that doesn’t mean that other players who play this game like it.

This is a fantasy world that many people use as a form of escapism. One suspects that it’s possible to create a system where there is an increased value to production rather than the TP.

For example,

1. No TP. Everything has a sale fixed value and a fixed cost.

2. if GW2 were to implement a direct trading system where people didn’t have to worry about getting scammed then the producer could sell directly to the consumer and you’d probably see less profit come out of flipping.

Note, this is also reflected in real life as scamming is illegal and results in a prision sentence. But, in Gw2 there is no penalty for such scamming.

Edit: I don’t necessary advocate any of these changes, I’m just saying that having the best source of profit be from flipping is a design decision and not a foregone conclusion.

example apple is the only one allowed to make any apple product and sell it so i cant make a iphone and go sell it but that means they have a monopol on iphones but hey thats illegal is it not? nope its not
3th. its illegal to make a monopol by forcing our oppenets out of business but thats a diffrent story and thats not what we are discusing right now.
4th sources are very importent to remember to check: wiki is the worst of the worst to use for source info as anyone can correct/change it as they see fit

a little off topic, but I don’t just make this stuff up. Here is the actual U.S. statute.

(a) Felonies generally
It shall be a felony punishable by a fine of not more than $1,000,000 or imprisonment for not more than 10 years, or both, together with the costs of prosecution, for:

(2) Any person to manipulate or attempt to manipulate the price of any commodity in interstate commerce, or for future delivery on or subject to the rules of any registered entity, or of any swap, or to corner or attempt to corner any such commodity or knowingly to deliver or cause to be delivered for transmission through the mails or interstate commerce by telegraph, telephone, wireless, or other means of communication false or misleading or knowingly inaccurate reports concerning crop or market information or conditions that affect or tend to affect the price of any commodity in interstate commerce, or knowingly to violate the provisions of section 6, section 6b, subsections (a) through (e) of subsection 1 6c, section 6h, section 6o(1), or section 23 of this title.

I acknowledge that I know very little about antitrust or securities law (I’m sure many people here know a lot more). But I think there’s a different between a monopoly and cornering the market for a commodity.

For example, it’s perfectly legal to obtain a monopoly because your product is so good that everyone wants to buy it (called, I believe, a natural monopoly). But it’s illegal to use that monopoly power to try to obtain a monopoly in another area (for example, Microsoft cannot use the market power of windows to obtain a monopoly in the internet browser space).

However, this is fundamentally different from “pump and dump” or trying to corner the market on orange juice or pork bellies.

I finally decided to spend some tokens and laurels to buy me some Ascended gear. I am either immensely kittened or someone in the game design crew made a big do-do. With my slight tendencies towards OCD there was no question about buying two of the same ring… Little did I know that one is required to take a doctorate on the game in order to not get robbed with NO option for correction. Apparently, one cannot use the two of the same ring, when the rings are of Ascended level. WHAT?!

I WASTED 25 Laurels and 250 Tokens all for NOTHING. How is this even possible?! Shouldn’t there be a little note somewhere, saying “Note that you can only equip one of the same items” or “HEY YOU! Yes, YOU! There shall be no purchases of the same item, TWICE.”

This is not a game for kids who just play and do not read

Unique is a term that’s well understood by the MMO community, but is not a term that is generally used this way outside of the game. If I hadn’t been an avid forum follower / poster and slow to do fractals I may have made exactly the same mistake.

In my view the term “unique” in a video game does not, without further information, mean “you can buy as many as you want but can only equip one”. That’s definition requires additional context that the OP may not have brought with him.

I think a few players are over simplifying this and unfairly belittling guardiaN.

If a player has sufficient funds to continually buy up 100% of the supply for an item, they can effectively control prices. Agreed that legendaries are not “mandatory” and nobody is required to buy them. However if you control supply, you control prices. You either pay the price set by the controller, or you find another avenue.

There is enough gold in this game that some folks will just pay the price.

Is it wrong? It is illegal in RL — but this is a game. I personally don’t care but I do find it annoying that the economy can be played in such a fashion.

nope its not illegal to buy all of one type of things(in this chase we have diamonds allready mentiont so lets stick to that) and the sell them agien at a much higher price but there is none in the world with the money to do it and you also need to control the injection of diamonds(that is imposible). so a monopol is not illegal if mad by owning all diamonds but its illegal if you dont own all diamonds but dont allow anyone else to sell there diamonds at a lower price if they want to.

It is (er… can be?) in the U.S.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_Thursday. Maybe not criminal, but civil.

Edit: Nope. Also criminal

I concede that that is, in fact, a blob. And it does provide evidence in support of blobesity. It doesn’t prove that the only thing out there are blobs.

I know that, last week, while hopelessly outmanned, I threw my little walking loot bag (oh for a rename contract) into the FA group numerous times without anything that could be called a “zerg” backing me up.

I am bored at work. Someone refute me or show me the light about WxP levels, please?

So run around on a zerg necro to get equal benefits get for your roaming thief? Seems, not too fair.

Do you think this would be fair?

To me this comes down to how you view characters. Some people (an ANet is included in this group) view each character as a separate entity. This entity is an individual with an individual progression path. (Unless, of course, we’re talking about daily rewards in which case they are all one account thank you very much)

Other people view characters as a suit they put on. So once they’ve done an activity on one character they think it should be done on all characters. After all, it’s the same guy behind the keyboard.

Your statement is consistent with the first viewpoint. However, from the other viewpoint it makes perfect sense that you (as a player) earn WXP no matter which character you are using.

CD only zergs and is getting owned by Ehmry Bay right now.

Disagree on the zerging. Agree on the owning (if 8,000 points is owning).

Necromancers are the current kings of PvP and WvW. So check them out. This may change in September (after Pax).

Spirit rangers are also very strong in PvP but I don’t know about WvW.

Character progression past 80

I have no problem with challenging content.

I just don’t want more levels or gear tiers, or crafting levels, or anything else like that. I don’t want to have to grind anything. I hate it. If that’s not what you’re asking for then I don’t have an issue.

TooBz.3065

Please, please no more “progression.” Every time we get progression I have to spend more time doing stuff I don’t enjoy.

It’s just not something that can ever be made interesting, and frankly, people who want it are never satisfied. If ANet adds 10 more levels, you’ll get the 10 levels and ask for 10 more.

I’m equally sure that if they give you new gear, you’ll get it and ask for more.

As you mentioned, there are WvW levels that allow you to carry more siege, take less damage, do more damage, etc. There are fractals where you can level until you can’t hack it. There’s PvP where you can level up to a bear or chihuahua or whatever the top level is.

Alternatively, you can hone your skills yourself and try to die less, speed run dungeons, craft a legendary, whatever. Set a goal and obtain it.

I don’t care if this is good for the economy or not.

But I would like to thank guardiaN because seeing things like this keeps me from buying gems with cash.

(Yes, I know that’s not rational. Don’t care about that either.)

Shatter vs Phantasm vs Conditions (in WvW)

Play the stealth/condi spec. Stealth in this game is beyond broken and it would be dumb not to abuse it.

Its broken on thieves, its balanced on Mesmers. As we cant go into stealth every 4 seconds, we cant burst from stealth as an opener either

I was about to say the same thing. Glad you did it for me.

Best way to stay alive as phantasms hit?

I also recommend binding dodge to an easy to use location. I bind dodge to pushing the mouse wheel to the right. I can hit it very quickly, which helps make up for my natural clumsiness.

Decoy + Blink is amazing. You use up two utilities, but it confuses everyone.

Also, what key do you use to dodge. I have a logitech mouse and I bind dodge to pushing the mouse wheel to the side. It helps with my slow reaction (cause it’s really quick).

I would recommend lots of invisibility skills. Osicat has great videos with a condition spec. Where he just bugs the heck out of people.

Leap could be fixed by having the clone appear next to the target (like the scepter clones). But this may make the time between clone generation and the swap too quick.

Tips for Beginner Mesmers?

in Mesmer

Posted by: TooBz.3065

TooBz.3065

If you are using power gear (and if you aren’t you should), then my advice is start each fight with a phantasm and end it with a shatter.

That may sound trivial but it makes a big difference. Just like the ranger does less damage because ANet assumes it’s pet will attack, we do less damage because it is assumed that we will have a phantasm or two out.

So as soon as you can when a fight starts launch a phantasm (Greatsword 4, Staff 3, Offhand Pistol… er… 4, Offhand Focus 5, Torch 5 (but don’t use a torch), Offhand Sword 5).

If you find your phantasms dying a lot, shatter them after they get off a full attack cycle.

If you are using a Greatsword, here is a good rotation.
Greatsword 1, Greatsword 4, Greatsword 2, Greatsword 3

Here is my basic (PVE) rotation for a Sword / X + staff.
X Phantasm.
Sword 3
Sword 3
Sword 2
Swap to Staff.
Number 5 on staff
Staff 2
Staff 3
Staff 4
Swap to sword / x and repeat.

Anet, gw2 hardcore or casual?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: TooBz.3065

TooBz.3065

I don’t think Hardcore / Casual is a good metric. It’s way more complicated than that. This game is too diverse in terms of what it offers. Personally, I’ve identified at least 6 different kinds of groups that could all be called hardcore.

Dungeon Runners
WvW Soldiers
Loot Hunters
Alt Enthusiasts
PvE Explorers
PvP Gladiators

So I don’t think it’s as easy as catering to the hardcore or casual. All of those groups could be called “hardcore” but each has different needs and wants that are sometimes directly opposed to each other.

It’s not an easy job

Kicking someone from a party that only exists to maximize the change to get drops for not having zerker gear is crazy stupid. It doesn’t make any sense at all.

It actually shows that they have no idea how tagging actually works in this game.

And flaming you with whispers is inexcusable.

But I would block them and move on.
