also testing out ricochet…. i kinda like it about even with bountiful theft however….. not sure which is preferred as of yet.
well you have to (or atleast i suggest to) build for each zone. some zones have high concentrations of enemies some are more spread out. some have high end bosses some just a few veterans. these are what you need to keep in mind. for the zones with high concentrations/high bosses….use condition build like 0 0 30 20 20 or osmething ofthe sort. if they are more spread out use a more direct dmg/spike byuild like 25 30 0 0 15 or whatever. for condi bring caltrops and a choice of whatever for the rest ( i do like ricochet alot for bleed builds especially in pve) and the direct dmg build id use moer gap closers.
i cant play p/d without AOE blind on stealth. try it. itll change your world
umm im not sure the traitlines can be used one in the same. i dont know anyoen who uses d/p and p/d unless youre are constantly changing the SA traits between fights…. i mean p/d doesnt require much initiative so you would use blind ond stealth rather than 2 init per stealth. which is generally the biggest difference. and since p/d needs melee range for stealth its a VERY important defensive key to making the build work. i would highly recommend not doing this.
you can still hit for 25 k. i use a signet build i made. if on a naked warrior with frenzy i could hit like almost 90k

Skale Venom is amazing since it has Torment and a lot of people still don’t understand how it works. If I blast 6 stacks of bleed into you and 3 stacks of Torment and the target is moving, that is an instant 12 stacks of bleeds.. people melt, especially if they have no condition removals.
Skale Venom over Caltrops anytime.. I only use Caltrops to cap camps/towers/keeps. :P
I thought tormet while still was 75% of bleed, and while moving it was 150% of bleed? Thus, 6 bleeds + 3 tormets = 9.5 stacks of bleed. Still, nice cover condition, something we lack.
i think ur right. either way the first day or 2 scale venom wasnt working on movement…so i didnt use it…even so i dont notice a huge hurt when its on me….. then again i can afford to stand still/remove so idk. i dont think its worth dropping your defensive skill in wvw .
the one above is very nice. i can kill any build with it minus eles bc of their aoe/condi skills that u just cant dodge….so what i did to make it more viable is run condi removal on stealth with the skills blinding powder…..withdraw….roll for init….sig of agili (more engery and c ondi removal if timed right) ….. i even made it work with balthazar runes….. but always use thieves guild with this build as some of the ele/thief troll builds will give u trouble when they are ready to heal u need to drop TG and finish them off.
side note…. u guys may notice if u use the build d/d evade condi that it tricks mesmer clones into retaliating/attackign slowly….. for some reason the evades mess up the clones and the build just absolutely tears thru any mesmer build ive foughten with it. dont know why but it does.
tip: might need to trade in infil signet for blinding powder if not going against condi builds…..also use CnD if u need it as it will drop 2 condis if u r patient.
but when mashing at a boss thief will do more, especially if they got a guardian that tanks it in the front and provide you might, as thief got to sacrifice a lot for these might stacks, if he can change these might skills to somthing else he would get better damage if someone else provided him might.
Huh? If Guardian is tanking and both Thief and Warrior are behind the boss doing DPS while Guardian feeding might to both…Thief loses BIG TIME.
The animation of CnD+Backstab alone puts you behind in DPS every time.

i hear you but CC is the name of the game in wvw. spike doesnt matter. if you get a PVT zerg vs a zerk zerg the PVT will always win bc dmg stacks with other dmg and so do most conditions/Aoes etc. in wvw im DYING to make a build i can use to fight with that i can use 1 v 1 and 1 v 2 but also in a larger crowd. d/d evade condi removal build of mine (non mainstream) was amazing…however i found out the evades were a downfall. 1/4 and 1/2 second evades on 1 second and 1.25 second skills/attacks/utilities ended up leaving me at a disadvantage. i was vulnerable for the same amount of time the evade works…but right after when the skill is finishing . during this time i cant evade again…block or move…i ahve to wait for the skill to finish. you might not think that .5 or .75 seconds is long but when 20 v 20 or 50 v 50 is chain casting dmg / aoes you will get 3-4 hits easily in that small period of time. where as stealth can allow you to stay on ground and time your dodge rolls (which seem to have the longest evade per activation time in the entire game).

Trav, you need to just stop posting. Acting like you know everything about he class is really getting on a lot of people’s nerves and ruins your credibility. There are many builds which have no stealth at all in top tier tPvP arenas for point capping and holding. The fact that you’ve become stealth reliant shows how little you really know. I also thought it was funny when you claimed that carrion was the only viable condition build option.
dont get me wrong. i would prefer a game without stealth at this point. it lowers my DPS….it is the tradeoff for our crap boons crap defense crap skills (no blocks invul etc) …. but in wvw stealth is kind of really needed at some lvl or anything larger than 2 peopl are goign to kitten you. call my bs if u like but find a video that proves otherwise or you are just wrong. i can show you dozens of videos of people rocking other 1 v 2s 1 v 3s 1 v 4s 1 v 5s and so on and so forth but all of them use stealth. obv in spvp/tpvp/pve its a diff story but in wvw stealth is a needed skill for thieves. maybe u dont wvw but all thieves ive met use stealth. this is common sense dont try argue it :P save face

i prefer the extra second of stun over….it matches well with 3-4 secs of invis. the lyssa runes only help you once every 45 seconds….at best. mesmer runes can potentially help you every 4-5 seconds if u get stuns off right. srry cant say that it balances in comparison. perhaps if you used improvisation and got lucky everytime with venoms on a 20 0 20 0 30 build or something. idk. jmpov

well u forgot one….im using p/d stun 10 0 30 0 30…and its my fav build right now. strongest all around in wvw. and ive mastered all thief builds….. except p/p.
stay in spvp….kinda the only spot u can use it. unless u get the rare 1 v 1 chnace in wvw. just my 2 c
if u wanna stay hidden us d/p 5 2 2 2 2 combo. but thats annoying and its DPS is really low considering the amount of time ur in stealth. i personally use p/d as it is best for wvw . if u like spvp use s/d and d/p as a backup or s/d and sb. d/d is ok to use but only use it in a group or if you are using a evade spam build which is really strong if built right.
general rule of thumb for utilities is
HIDE in shadows (invis builds) or Withdraw (s/d builds)

theres other options like conditions builds which keep you alive longer and also let you put more help into a fight rather than stay invis 75% of the time doing nothing. it really depends where you are and what your goals are. s/d is great but in wvw its more of a backup set. id go d/p and sb if u plan on doing 1 v 1 and d/p with s/d if u plan doing 2 v 2 ish…and p/d p/d if u plan on larger fights.

Try D/P for a change of play style.
D/P is stronger in WvW. You combo black powder with heartseeker to grant stealth and you can chain multiple heartseekers across the field to stack stealth and achieve “perma stealth”. This is more survivable than D/D (lots of blinds) but slightly less burst.
If you’re going to play D/P you need to learn to play without auto targetting so you can heartseeker in the direction of your choosing (not always towards the nearest enemy)
hate to say it…but d/p isnt stronger :P…. its too risky in wvw …unless u count on not running into 3+ people.

Short question: how do you kill fleeing targets? I run p/d sometimes myself
but if my opponent just decides to leg it, i have nearly no way of reliably illing them before they get away into a keep or a heavily guarded area.
i run p/d as my serious build as i see its best overal for wvw. i run a difkittend of p/d tho. 10 0 30 0 30…..use long reach…bountiful theft…..sleight of hand setup so 1500 range on steal with a 2 sec stun and 1200 range on sshadow step adds up to almost 3k range in less than .2 seconds. thatll do it. every 20 secs on steal….. plus make sure you throw dancing dagger at 33% hp and keep it on him.

this following set of videos shows the difference in your average p/d and your avergate d/p video. notice the fights
this guy only fights 1 v 1 ….soon as 2 or more people hes in defensive mode and on his way running for safety…atleast until he can even the odds again. decent player….playing it smart within his builds capabilities.
another good/decent player but this is p/d and she is NOT running from 2+. shes in there dealing with it and winning alot…… you will see if you watch both what i mean. (to all of the nay sayers or people not understanding what the point of this post was for wvw overalll builds)_
roaming d/p…..as in the few solo floaters you see and attack. in a zerg 5 2 2 2 2 1 5 2 2 2 2 1 doesnt really work that well…. not very much dmg and also too much incidental dmg while in larger groups.
I’ve played P/D for a bit and it’s pretty good. You can be darn near unkillable but I definately would not call it the best build for thieves.
It kills things too slow unless you put a high amount of points into deadly arts. I’d say that any raw damage thief build is more effective simply based on time.
Also you can only use one on swap sigil at a time as they share cooldowns. In addition you only really need 2 weapons and 2 sigils.
You also should get rid of SR in favor of caltrops or a venom, the skill is worthless if you’re solo roaming since you can easily get away. You can also drop hide in shadows for withdraw since you have shadow’s embrace (optional). Personally I find thieves guild worthless at all times, but daggerstorm has its uses.
A problem I see with your personal incarnation of the P/D thief is the low bleed stacks. It seems like it would be extremely difficult or even impossible to down someone with condition removal or just good healing.
i agree with your points but as i said its a “do it all” kind of build….most …if not all other builds can really only do 1 thing well. i do trade out caltrops when im in zerg style for shadowstep….. and 1v1 shadow refuge out for a venom……but basically if you HAD TO keep one build with one set of utilities to face all things such as zerg…1v1 1 v 2 and 1 vx….this is what i keep.
thieves guild is amazing in 1 v 1. theres no other dueling elite that u can use in this case. the rare occaison you meet the engineer that cant take bleed condition under 25% hp…. well then u want it
also its amazing bc at 33% hp…. u blind powder….thieves guild……sneak attack quickly as it finishes into another quick steal for a 2 sec stun …during the stun one of the thieves uses scorpion wire pulling him then u CND to a stomp. i use TG as a finisher…and its amaaaaaazing. dueling only. any other style i use DS…. now daggerstorm is amazing too if used right. soon as enemy swaps to ranged use your daggerstorm….also when they are using those pesky KDS and CCs ….use DS then dodge roll out which keeps you about 8-10 secs of stability if traited for it. thats nice especially against the first 10 seconds fighting a guardian/engie/warrior.
some people seem to love or hate p/d …personally its not the “funnest build” lol but its overall the most useful. i have had a fight where they take 90 seconds to 2mins to kill but those are literally 1 in 100 for me. timing stuns and sneak attacks/CNDs etc right is the key to making this successful.
D/P BUILD:
-good build for 1 v 1 and maybe 1 v 2……….
-Bad build for 20 v 20 or 50 v 50
-Bad build for 1 v x (IF you are actually fighting and not running)
-One mess up and its more than likely lights out against a good player
-easily predictable and easily able to plan against Black powder shot / HS combo
-cant use condi builds
-best used in WVW and decent in SPVP TPVP PVE
S/D BUILD
-tied for d/p as a good 1 v 1 and occaisonally 1 v 2 build (if the 2 are not masters)
-bad build for 20 v 20 and 50 v 50 (lack of HP/Stealth/Heals)
-bad build for 1 v x (against unless running away even thats harder than d/p)
-hard to fight another zerker or AOE and / or condi caster
-cant use condi builds with this
-best used in SPVP TPVP (can be used in pve but not preferred)

-arguably good 1 v 1 build depending on opponent
-worst defense out of all builds (next to s/p arguably)
- worst at 1 v x
-worst at 50 v 50 and 20 v 20
-good for conditions and spike dmg builds

Literally the only thing in this build that shouts “conditions!” is your carrion gear, which people seem to think is good for thieves.
Maybe it’s because I’ve built myself as an invincible condition thief, but for the most part I feel like little effort is put into making the thief more survivable than berserker builds. For me, survivability is the ability to be at a stalemate with a zerg while they try to kill you for over 10 minutes when you finally decide to let them kill you so that you can release back to the main group or run away depending on the situation.

@incurafy show me some builds where there are decent players in a 1 v 3 or 1 v4 or + . ive seen prolly 200+ thief videos roughly and i notice that d/p averages 1-2 tops and p/d averages 2-3 …. s/d is usually 1 and occaisonally 2…..2-3 for s/d usually has d/p as main/backup. if you disagree with that then u just havent watched many videos. and again ill bet you gold you cant get in the fray with any of these 3: d/d d/p or s/d. really plz get in there and mix it up on video plz! and be real dont go make 100% defensive s/d bc we all know s/d is direct dmg build. challenge accepted?
Post your builds all you want, Trav, but for kitten sake man, stop declaring that they are the best Thief builds. This is the second or third mediocre P/D build you’ve posted and it’s just as bad as the other(s).
Seriously, even your claims that other weapon sets can only 1v1 is ridiculous. Speak for yourself, but I can 1v3+ with D/D, D/P, S/D and even S/P, all using almost the exact same trait allocation. I guarantee I would beat you in any duel with any of these sets.
the point wasnt a nanana boo boo. i was sharing (in my experience) the best OVERALL build for wvw. if ur an expert thief as well just keep it moving. not everyone is and would love to try somethign different. i highly doubt this is a mainline/FOTM/META build. if it is plz do show me where its been used so much. 99% of the videos i see of d/d or d/p or s/d etc are of 1 v 1 and 1 v 2 max. 1v3 MAYBE for a sec or 2 or if ur escaping but be real they dont have the defense/hp to really hold up in any big fight. this allows a player to fight 1 v 1 and LITERALLY get into the middle of a zerg and do something. sorry but d/d d/p and s/d ARE NOT going to do that. they end up dead. stay on the edges and hope for a wounded lamb to walk on by :P maybe i mis typed what i meant on the title. this was to help alot of other players i see asking for runes…traits….builds….bc lets face it…wvw is very hard for alot of players.

really? lol wtf are you talking about? its a bleed build. which falls into conditions….;paired with mass blinds and decently consistent poison. you really dont need any others…if u bring others its a downgrade in utility. and what do you run? venoms? lol sure thats invincible. D/P? i used to run this as a 5 0 30 30 5 build but changed it to this as i saw more energy more steals more stuns more poisons and more stealing boons and more range a worthwhile trade off for the drop in hp from 22k to 18k. a zerg doesnt kill me ever unless i let them. d/p dies all the time bc 5 2 2 2 is NOT viable when theres alot of people around….HS hits people etc etc…AOE = death. i run shadow refuge + blinding powder + Shadow step…..not sure i could get more much defensive (which is also offensive due to sneak attack) . what do you run thats so different? i guarantee the only thing different is your traits. which are im willing to bet kitten ed close. you prolly what put a lil more into vitality and take it from somewhere other than shadow arts righT? i bet im right on the money mr cookie cutter. did u even read/watch ? i mean your comments are so far off they dont even make sense lol/. uber fail brah lol

good engie has a chance against any thief. if ur talking about a bad thief…then even they can pester a decent player but shouldnt win. thieves are really not that hard to beat if u are set up for 1 v 1. problem is most players dont set up for 1 v 1….they set up for group play…..BUT thieves CANT really do well in group play so they set up for 1 v 1. so in essence 95% of the time you have SOLO build (thief) vs GROUP build (any other class) and its obvious who the winner SHOULD be. these are variables that arent considered when facing a roamer. ……. u can change ur build around to deal with it then ull be less of use in teh group……u pick what you wanna do as a player
or u could just do what wvw is meant for and keep the group build and just not run by yourself :O……crazy thinking here i know lol. (not directed at you….just haters in general)
timing is VERY important with this build. i never have a problem with it but thats bc i know all the other classes pretty well. especially in predicting what they are going to do next. and never make a pattern for yourself. for wvw there is no better build overall. this can 1 v 1 ….1 v x …..and Z v Z. d/p can only 1 v 1. s/d can only 1 v 1. venom share can only Z v Z.
since Cluster bomb…..trick shot…..and weakness has been nerfed….i find little use for SB. i cant justify using it for poison as i have plenty of access to it without losing my main dmg weapons and also have plenty of INITIATIVE-FREE access to dodges without it and also have ways of crippling for the same amount of init without having to increase gap. SB is detrimental to this kind of build.

eles need a slight nerf. +5 secs to each attunement recharge. atleas that way there arent spamming without a break. every other class has small breaks where they are waiting for recharges. but i know what you mean… i steal 2 boons every 20 seconds with my build….it REALLY helps.

DPS is something that has to be calculated by dividing the total dmg done over a set period of time by the aforesaid period.
The period has to be as long as possible to ensure data steadiness.
What is shown here is burst dmg, not DPS : without a parser/appropriate tool, DPS is not something visible, it has to be calculated somehow.GW2 is not very min/max compatible : no combat log export & no IG dps tool => they don’t want us to calculate DPS let alon comparing classes.
Furthermore, thief is using here D/D which is a mono-target weapon whereas warrior dps mostly come from GS which is multi-target weapon
=> IMHO warrior has greater DPS (pve-wise) and by far…..
the longer the period ensures quality averages from a standard/acceptable sample size population. however the OP doesnt know what DPS means. he thinks it means how much dmg you can do :P lol. boy thats vague. but yeah i tried to explain this to him once already.
yeah engi should always have a chance at beating thief IF they are good.
Yeah Travlane, the range isn’t that good, but you shouldn’t forget that you
can port over the z axis too, which often is a huge advantage. And yeah you
are right, I was playing the so called “unicorn” build for a while, and 3 v 1
aren pretty much manageable, but it takes ages to kill somebody, and against
condition cleanse heavy classes/builds it takes even longer, I remember a fight
against a guardian …. there was simply no outcome. But well maybe it was the
fault of d/d and not using p/d, who know.see…if you use CB as backup you kill your dmg in the small style battles bc u cant switch in middle of fighting…if u do you obviously lower dmg….not only that you lose the poison and the extra free evade.
The shortbow #3 is a way better evade imo, and there is poison too, but yes you are
right about the dmg.Well, since I am bored anyway I will give it a try in sPvP.
guardian has literally no chance against me….dont care WHAT build he plays. the only builds that are tough to play with this are against D/P thief and D/D healing/cleanse ele. both of which i WILL kill although the ele would take 2 mins prolly…but then again nobody runs the ele cleanse bc that build cant kill a rabbit :P the dmg is so redic low its not funny. basically no diff than a troll build.
