Honestly I don’t even think this guy want’s to know what ranger build the guy was running. I told him a build/showed him a video of a ranger regen build and he just keeps talking about how awesome he his.

Just an FYI, your build isn’t the only regen build out there. I have looked at all the postings and videos, I like aspects of all of them. Your video was hard for me to follow because you sped the footage up so fast. I’d like to know what armor and such you were wearing but from what i could see from you screen you were doing basically the same thing as one of the first posters (carpboy’s video links and the instructional build on youtube)
Also for me it was hard to tell exactly how much damage you were doing. There was no doubt you were regening a lot but you weren’t solo and there was a lot of other dps being laid out. How is you build in regards to shear damage?

Dont get me wrong either, not trying to brag or say I am super skilled (probably should have left out personal reference but wanted to say I was speaking from experience)… just the way you describe it sounds like traited sigil of stone was used, not just regen.

Also wanted to mention that stealth doesnt do anything against rapid fire which can exceed 12k damage, especially to paper thieves, so there is more than one spec for dealing with thieves. Usually thats the only button I have to press to kitten most thieves. Edit: if you add hunters call its another 5k. How much health do most thieves have?

You could be quite right about signet of stone, but that would only have taken care a a few secs of damage and he should have been taking no damage. This guy was taking damage sometimes getting to half health but the rate that it refreshed was so fast you couldn’t dps thru it, which leads me to believe it wasn’t just signet of stone.

Trust me I know rapid fire hurts, and a assume for glass thieves you might even be able to kill them with that skill. As for me personally I have too much toughness, armor, and health to die to any one skill.

And speaking of bow rangers if you play it proficient I commend you, Ive tried it before and its fine if all u do is follow a zerg around, but solo it seems very poor mobility wise but that just me. I know 1 guy who is very good at it and all aspects of the ranger but beyond that, thats all ive seen. I wish I was better at it because lets be honest shooting a bow is what a ranger is about, and it looks so cool

Sorry but you wont kill me in 5-6 secs and I am not regen. Traited sigil of stone ensures you dont get started until 6 seconds are gone. If I use “protect me” that means 12 seconds. Theres no way regen can counter 5 people, its not that good, not enough to counter 5-10k dps. Theres something important you are missing about that engagement.

If you are the top 0.5% of rangers skillwise you are probably right I wont kill you in 6 secs, but the historical fact is you will die at some point (less than 60 secs). Your “protect me/SoS” doesn’t worry me. If i was truly concerned about it at a certain part of the fight I would simply cloak/dagger off your pet till it wore off or I would just shadow refuge and watch it wear off you, after that, most of your defense is gone and I would lay down so many bleeds your non regen build would not be able to keep up. You would see me very little as I would have continual c/d off your pet, I wouldn’t even need to be close to you to bleed you to death.

I’m not saying this to be an kitten, I’m saying it because that’s simply how you beat rangers in this game as a cond thief, its Anets fault that cond thief can rip apart most rangers in secs, not my fault.

I’m not trying to in this post be some arrogant kitten that thinks I’m unbeatable or the best player in the game. Thats far from the truth and I’ve had my kitten handed to me many times. But with this I say this. I had at least 4 of my guild mates and maybe 1-2 others there working this guy. I am in what would be considered one of the most elite guilds on our server in regards to skill level. I dont say that to be arrogant it’s just true and most would agree with that statement. So, were talking at least 4 upper tier fully geared players couldn’t kill this guy in a few crappy npc’s……..HE WAS GOOD and HE WAS IMPRESSIVE!!! I promise you that.

To add I have never and I mean never been with 4 guildmates vs 1 other player and anyone die, just not going to happen.

Trueshot, have you ever got 600 to 1500 bleed damage per second on a target? The way ranger can stack bleeds really is kind of insane, especially since they buffed keen edge and sharpened edges. There’s nothing wrong with bleed sigils. Sigil of earth is great if you can crit consistently too. With bleed duration in wvw, a single ranger has the potential to stack 25 bleeds.

The bleeds on my thief usually tick for 1600-2600 depending obviously on how many i have on them, if the target failed to put anything in toughness and i stack 25 I am very close to 3k per tick (my #1 pistol does 139 a bleed and my caltrops are a little less for whatever reason think low 120’s). problem with my cond damage.duration build is, i have very few other cond to apply so bleed is easy to strip, all 25 in one shot kinda stinks.

The pet appears to suck why do you care if it dies, what does it actually do? especially regen build?

The 30 in beast master that all seems a waste, that #12 is regen for the pet not you, right?

The shouts would seem easy to use with little invested, grab protection and put 10 points in to 1 trait line, and you would have continuous regen.

Geomancy, what’s the need for this bleed you already have so many conditions?

dway runes? I saw one guy using 3 different sets that gave total of 45% boon duration that would effect regen and of course all your other boons?

No Ive played against these types of builds before but none came close to this. Ive been playing since beta and never seen a ranger that even came close. I assure you it was his skill and build that made him better than all the others, he’s definitely doing something not many others are doing (at least on the servers I play against) I see tons of rangers in WvW, difference is they all suck (poor fellows).

Im FC, he was DR or DH i think, because it was definitely in the last 7 days this happened. I want to say he was a blonde headed human, im pretty positive about human not sure about blonde but hairstyle was shorter. I also think he was using the ice cat pet, but again not positive.

Yes, I was hitting him and frequently but im a p/d cond thief so i never see huge drops in health very fast, it was like he was out regen’ing my bleeds. on top of that he most definitely was perfectly timing condition removals, where it seemed i almost never had any on him. He was unable to be immobilized or locked down it seemed. Again, I’ll say I have never and i mean NEVER had a problem killing a ranger even the best ones, but this guy was special. I play on FC this ranger was from DH or DR and we were fighting him at the door to bay in the NPC rt beside the supply camp. If its one of you, we need to be new best friends. It was this past week if that gives you an idea.

As for my ranger I got him to 60 today and tried out the regen stuff, I see how if i load the shout deal and spam shouts i can get like 60 secs of regen, but it doesn’t pulse high enough to stay at full health like the ranger in question was. I’ll admit I don’t know a lot about this mobil play style on the ranger but i’m 100% convinced it is the ONLY viable option in WvW, A Ranger with a bow will die to me in less than 5-6 secs. but because only regen stacks in duration and not amount not sure how this guy was 1v5ing us that day. He didn’t do massive damage to me, but it was constant, and I dont think it was his pet, i usually welcome pets it makes it so much easier to cloak/dagger off them and not have to chase the ranger which then i come from stealth with 5 stacks of bleeds. i just rinse and repeat and ranger is dead very quickly. But not this guy. So even with my lack of knowledge i doubt he would have traited that heavy into beastmaster.

Ok so in one year of play time I have yet to die to a ranger, but I need to be clear about what happen to me a few nights ago. I ran into the best ranger I have ever seen and would have died if i hadn’t run my sweet little kitten off. This guy was incredible. I’m in an extremely high end guild and there were 4 or 5 of us trying to kill 1, yes 1, ranger. He did have npc help but that shouldn’t have matter. Normally I will fight a ranger and his buddies by myself in the middle of as many npcs as they need.

So now for the brunt of this. The ranger had such quick regen his health bar never moved, it appeared he was using one handed weapons I think it was sword/torch or sword/dagger, I may be wrong. Never the less my question to you all is, is anyone aware of this build and how it is played. I’ve been slowly working on a ranger myself and fell in love with this guys play style when i saw him play. It was a lot of regen’ing (rarely saw him actually heal) and he did a lot of dodging, moving very quickly around the screen.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

Thats funny i have been rolfstomping DH and FC alike while i roam with my guild and came to the conclusion that there isnt any good roamers on DH or FC

Ive pretty much come to the conclusion there are no solo or small group players on SF, just massive heaps of red names. What’s funny is the quality of the zerg is so horrible i can always pull 3-4 off the back and kill them and run before the zerg realizes. Its quite a bit of fun in my small little mind…….

As an engineer I find thieves to be the most annoying class present on the eternal battlegrounds……… I still think that stealth mechanic is a little bit broken. It saves the thief from dying way too many times ……….. Stealth is the perfect mechanic to reset a bad fight and helps thieves get a free get out of jail card. This I find to be the only real problem. With other classes I do not encounter this issue. But thieves are something else.

Hmmm so as an Eng, instead of allowing a thief to reset a fight. You would rather make him stand and fight you in the spot you threw your elite skill along with a net turret or some other aoe, plus you spamming grenades? Yea that sounds exactly the kind of fight i want to stay around for. Why in the world would a thief stay around while getting owned by your OP elite skill and your insane grenade dps.
On the other hand I see it fair that you must stand there, not use healing skills, not use grenades, and not bunker down on your elite skill…that seems fair to me…..

The real problem is that initiative is way too easy to come by. It recharges so fast that a thief can continuously cycle: fight, stealth, retreat, return — until all your skills are on recharge. But none of his will be because initiative recharge rate is so broken. Then he comes in for the kill.

Its not broken by a long shot. You have to spec heavy to get a decent pool of INT.

Shadow Arts #5 (gain 2 INT when you stealth),
Shadow Arts #10 if you want INT regen in stealth(i don’t use),
Acrobatics #9 2 int every 10 secs (worthless imo),
Acrobatics #12 3 INT on weapon switch (im not using 30 point to get this crappy skill), 15 points in Trickery will get you 3 INT on steal and 3 max INT,
Trickery #11 4 INT on heal (no way im spending 30 points on this)

Please note that all these are the bottom 3 lines, all of which have nothing to do with damage, to get these you sacrifice damage and crit chance. So someone that has infinite INT pool (or so it seems) isn’t gonna hit you very hard.

Plus as I said the cost of a few of those is way to high, you would have to give up stuff 10x better to get those. TBH SA #5 is the best thing up there, 2nd by 15 points in Trickery to get 3 max INT.

Thats just mu humble opinion though.

They get around fast (most important in spvp for free cap) and they deal sick damage when free casting (important in pve). What should anet change if all they care about is looking fine from thief perspective.

Lol @ Style, so true, you can waste a noob in just seconds but against a moderately good player, everything must go right, and against someone as talented as you or better you have 2 options….be ready to be facerolled or run.
@Empyre, thief can’t cap in spvp in stealth. they must be in the open.

I will give nades a try if its really my only option. I currently run with Flamethrower, Rocket Boots and Elixir B i think, the one that gives you the boons

Im not trying to tell you how to play, but in WvW all I personally care about is winning, so I do what I’m best at not what i’d like to be best at. The 3 skills you noted are all worthless against a thief and most other classes. My first toon was a Eng and I loved it, I took him out the other day and got murdered in the most intense way. Needless To Say I was very rusty. I like to compete and I can’t compete on something that i haven’t played a lot. I think where MMOers get in trouble is having one of every toon and never being very good at even one. It has always been my achilles heel in games, ive tried to limit it in GW2.

I’d take the advice the other guy gave about beating thieves. Drop your elite, maybe net turret as well, then spam grenades on top of yourself. A thief can hurt you if he cant get to ya!

Exactly, a well played warrior scares me a lot more than a well played thief! Immobilize plus hundred blades can take my entire health pool in one go…..far more than any thief can do to me.

Well put! My build is based on getting into stealth via cloak and dagger….I miss that and am drained 6 int and happen to be stunned or immobilized…..its nite nite!

OMG this guy is an Eng, who right now is one of the most dominate classes out there. Not to be kitteny here but I run a p/d build cond damage, toughness, vit max. I have 1900 tough and 21500 health. I very rarely die against any amount of numbers and maybe once or twice daily in a 1v1.
I fought a Eng today that threw a grenade at me once and i was put to 10k health from full health and then immobilized me and hit me again with grenade til I was at 3k. I stealthed and ran like a little girl!
You’re doing something wrong if you’re not facerolling with an Eng right now. Take a look on Eng forums everyone says grenades are op, so i’d suggest you trying them out.

I’m going to be honest, I wasn’t overly impressed by the duel/video. I’ve seen some really good thieves since launch…..and these builds aren’t at the top of my list thus far.

it has nothing whatsoever to do with repairs, it cost about 1.6 silver per death with lvl 80 exotic gear. if u cant afford that, then u got bigger problems. Bottom line is people are so use to easymode zergfest playstyle, when they finally have a challenge and get beat, their pride wont let them get beat so they alt-f4. takes maybe 20 secs to get back in game on the low tiered server I play on…..so no ones gonna stop doing this mess unless Anet does something about it, no reason for them to stop as of now.

I cant believe they changed the name of this thread, it upsets me. Yes Im a thief, but any nerf that is instore will not affect me whatsoever. As I actually started a post that was removed called “please nerf Thieves”. But we wont go into that. My point of this thread is that 80% of the posts are people crying about being out numbered or being on the losing side…..im just saying man up a bit and go fight anyways, you never know, you may have more fun being out numbered as you did following a massive zerg around easymoding kills. to me its way more fun to be challenged than to spend all my time whining that things are unfair. This game is a blast and will continue to be for sometime.

I was browsing thru the forums today to try and find something interesting and guess what, I didn’t.
All I see are about 50% of the post are about server transfers and about 30% are about unbalanced WvW. I mean can we group all this poo up into one thread or something?
Why dont people just quit the game if they are so unhappy? I for one am on one of the worst servers, we get faceroll all the time. I always have fun when I go out and don’t mind if our server is winning or losing, because the game is that much fun.
I spend 80% of my time by myself trying to avoid getting facerolled by a zerg and the other 20% with just a friend or 2 and we typically have a blast.
This game is what you make of it. If your heart gets broken every time you are without a zerg to follow around or every time youre outnumbered, this may not be the game for you. The Imbalance really imo has nothing to do with the fun of the game. The fun comes from finding something competitive to do.
Take last night for example. I was roaming around by myself for a hour or so before I played with some friends. I ran in to at least a dozen solid 100% fair 1v1’s with lvl 80 players and guess what? about 85% of them ran from me and i just chased them as i bleed them to death and they never tried attacking me once, only tried to kite me into npc’s (which they failed at doing). I mean, why even come to a pvp zone if you arent even going to attempt to fight a “fair” fight? It literally boggles my mind. Maybe someone can clear up for me why people come to a pvp zone if they aren’t looking for competition, ie., people who zerg, run, run and hide in npc’s?
Final Thoughts: There will always be someone better than you and always be someone worse than you, but you’ll never know if you don’t try. Go out and give it a try, you never know you may actually like the competitive nature!

good music, but why aren’t you wearing armor? are you aware that that helps your ability to defeat other players?

A well played Backstab/HS build will kill me instantly. 95% of them are not well played so I usually don’t have a problem but those few guys that can will send me to the rez point in less than 4 secs.
Mesmers are tough too, just makes me so confused I get frustrated trying to chase all their crap lol
I will say ive run into 2 Engineers out here that CC’d me so much and rifled me down with massive hits of 2-4 k on rifle shots, the were nasty
lastly a good guard can take a while to kill so you end up with more people showing up.

Ive yet to die to ranger, ele, or necro…and very raely to warrior solo. but all classes can be rough if they play well together.

yea i went with 45% from my armor, 10% from just 1 weapon-not both, and actually striped all my traits out of cond duration line and added 36% food to make up. so thats 91% and it appears that it puts me right over the 7 sec bleed duration threshold on vital shot. if i add everything back in, I get 131% and it still wont reach the 8 sec bleed duration threshold. so im going with more defense and not using the power/cond duration trait line.

It has nothing to do with repair costs. I just don’t believe in dying when a 1v1 fight went to 1v2 or more. On the occasion you can actually get 1v1s in WvW.

weak play still 1v1 or 1v30…..die like a man! Its a pvp zone there will never be the perfect numbers you require to accept a death……fought 10-15 people like you last night, i was the one out manned and they still alt+F4…….bag of fail!

My concern with the game and this potential ranking system is this. If I go out and solo a guy and do 100% of damage i get say 100 points. Well rt now, if someone comes and put 1 shot into the downed corpse the get 100 points also. This will promote zerging at its best and why we see massive zergs all the time. people sit in group and AOE to tag everything and do very little work and rack up on the kills. Thus they would achieve rank at a much faster rate if there were a ranking system. Also for one that solos, its impossible to take a tower/keep by yourself, so you’d get 0 points there. would be nice if the points scaled for how many people were at an objective. so if i solo supply camps and escort caravans by myself i could get decent points comparable to what the zergers are getting.

would there be any way for a non sieging/zerging player to achieve high ranks in your ranking system?

LOL, all that video showed me was a under skilled player running from everyone who engaged him. he maybe fired 8-10 shots when he was up on top of the keep. Best part was when he was scorpion wired off the keep and died instantly because he made no attempt to run/heal/or fight.
Problem here is when people are out number they clam all up and are so scared to fight which makes it even worse. Gotta get outta that comfort zone of being in the middle of a zerg and things will change for you the more confident you are with your class.
Lets also point out the player in the Video was lvl 18, that’s not really helping the situation he barely has utility skills and he only has 1 5point trait and no elite. hes basically a punching bag for everyone on the enemy team…..

DR is down by 2-3x again at the moment. I go to DR borderlands, I see that they have the entire map, its completely red. So I say to myself, let’s check this out. I walk out the front door, they have 40+ people with 4 siege weapons, camping about 7 FC guys. I literally lol irl. So here’s the tip if u don’t want to be pitiful:
If u have 40 on a map u completely own ur getting no points for camping Z people. Why not take ur zerg to another map while u have numbers and put up some points? I mean it was fun for me, I killed 2 dozen of ya before I had to log. But dang I kinda feel sorry for u boys. Anywho, hope this helps.

Just die like a man…..if you get beat the guy deserves to get loot from you and deserves to emote and corpse jump your body a little bit. Bottom line, get better and you wont have to worry about repair bills….

Well if talentless people wouldn’t run to top tiered servers because they died a few times in a pvp zone, we wouldn’t have this problem. I for one play on Ferguson’s Crossing, I have never, and I mean never, had 1 sec of wait time. Cheers

yea commander title is just plain dumb…..were 6 weeks in and a ton of people already have them and 98% those don’t need/deserve em. I assume in 6 months 1/2 the players will have em and it will be a cluster you know what out in WvW.

if you like zerging and low talent pools I’d head for something in the top tiers, if you want to be challenged try a small server…….

I enjoyed your video, mainly cause MoG is a joke and their 2nd in command is a chump. but other than that:
*There were 4 randoms with you guys and possibly a 5th(can’t confirm)
*You where in your own supply camp (no clue if it was upgraded or not)
So add all the players and NPC’s up you weren’t hugely outnumbered, if your anything like me I’d rather fight a player as an NPC’s any day lol
All and All it was entertaining, I actually watched it 2x
