Please explain why.

Mechanics require organization but it has no tools to encourage organization.

Therefore, instead of a 10 minute run, it will take 45 minutes- 1 hour to complete.

Exactly, no tools for organization, and severe penalty for any random player coming onto the map and joining the fight. very very very punitive for participation. This is simply a bad conceptual event. Spoon

My apologies for not being clear; I was getting more information regarding an earlier post in this thread and some other questions regarding the rewards.

19 hours later and…. crickets from the devs… I add my extreme dissapointment with the direction this game is taking, crap raid dynamics without any loot. Emphasis on spending real $$. Hey I understand they need to make real $$ but this event is the wrong direction. Four winds = FAIL. I doubt I even go there enough to complete even a single acheivement in the meta… Wow, just wow. At first I thought that the swiss system would be cool and lead to a lot of interesting results, but now it’s clear that it’s just a way to highlight the immense failure of the free transfer and pre-tournament transfers in general. The swiss system would probably have been a lot more interesting if the various servers could move between leagues during the 9 weeks. But then when you encourage server stacking via transfers, you end up with what we have, very little competition between the ranks… Even in the middle of NA servers, because HoD and FA are always going to be 1 and 2, the middle servers competing for 3 are all going to get knocked down in the rankings the week they play HoD and FA. Just like BS my server, at this point, we can stop playing entirely and take 8th place, OR we can put in a huge effort and take 8th place because we can’t compete with the Oceanic population of the servers above us. And it’s Week 5… another month of meaningless PPT… Spoon

We put in a ticket, got a canned response, just “thanks for the ticket, try filing a bug report in game next time.” We are hoping ANET does the right thing. The timers were all messed up, so cued missions or magic find would become active immediately and irrc expire immeadiately. A few WvW things got cued, then rushed, and rushed again because we hadn’t realized that it was bugged, really 30min later 250K influence poof! Gone. Spoon

PS you might check your guilds influence logs to see if something like this happened to you. If you only cued smaller cost stuff you might not realize that it was taken and you got nothing for it.

The problem is population gaps at specific times, such as oceanic, where my server Borlis Pass, just doesn’t have the coverage. So CD or NSP, during oceanic times not only dominate the PPT and entire maps, they end up with full supplied, fully upgraded keeps, towers and forts on almost every map. So when we get back into our prime time, not only do we have to take stuff back, they have the supplies to delay things significantly. Spoon

I’m with Cantur ftr. I think there are times when it’s okay for a person to transfer, it is just a game… BUT, I think it’s extremely sad that people are so willing to ditch their friends/allies especially when they need them most (for leagues).

The problem is the setting, WvW is the same thing over and over again, it’s gotten no attention from the Devs. EotM is for PVE players who want achievements, not for WvW players. So people get bored, antsy, and frustrated. Switching to some higher tier is one way to postpone the inevitable… having higher rewards for higher tiers just makes it even worse… players chase the shiney. The way the swiss system works, it’s going to really highlight the disparity between the servers, my guess is that final ranks will be painfully obvious after the first week, then people will start to lose interest…. The devs should never have instigated a system that rewards server stacking and relatively painless transfers… Spoon

I believe this whole server competition is the definition of a clusterkitten. All these guilds and servers chasing Anet’s prizes. Making the server rankings tied to rewards is a complete disaster. Servers should have simply been ranked and awarded gold, silver, and bronze titles only. The rewards should be player based, instead we get all sorts of guild transfers, pre-tournament server rank tanking, and 70% of the players/servers without any real chance at anything interesting, not that I found the “mini-dolyak” interesting from last season….. Personally, I think the combination of cheap transfers and the reward structure of Season 1 and 2 have only exacerbated the disparity between the servers, so now T1 and T2 are going to be even more stacked with major WvW guilds and the rest of us will be left to pick up the pieces. BP is taking a real hit and that really shouldn’t be the case because we are in the upper middle of everything, we aren’t getting guilds come from lower tiers, only our guilds going to higher tiers, but it’s totally understandable as more “serious” guilds stack on upper tier servers, people guest there and they see organized groups and more structure so they move for that, of course that leaves BS and servers like with a huge vacuum of “serious” guilds. So then we have less organization and it continues. We’ll pick up the pieces for sure, there are enough of us on BS, but overall I can’t see Anet’s efforts to be good thing. Spoon

The devs did make a couple of patches to “fix” the knight issue of inconsistent drop rates for the cores, which are the only required drop for finishing the backpacks. The holo fight just drops the same old loot with a very small chance for rares or any of the LS unique drops. Honestly, if your group can’t finish the knight they are going to waste 30min trying to do the holo… And that fight is seriously annoying, far more so than the knights. Just guest and be sure to get into lion’s Arch at least 10 min before the hour and if you are in an overflow that has a good number of people waiting for the knights don’t travel if asked, it only puts in another overflow and it might be worse…
Personally, I think these LS world events need to be rethought so they can be completed by all the servers, but remember this stuff is one and done, how much time do we really want the devs to spend on it? At least your server has to only kill one knight to get a chance for a core or two. It sucks, but it’s bascially almost over… Spoon

Its actually a reasonably elegant system most of the time. You get gold for doing stuff you like, and then you can convert the gold into stuff you want. If you want cores, fight the Knights, get loot, sell salvage, and either get the cores as drops or buy them from the profits of stuff you get.

The event itself is still messy though.

I have no problem buying stuff off the TP, but it should be reasonable to get it via the event. But I guess the other LS world events are lots of waiting too with arbitrary scaling… This one seems to be the worst…

Well… This IS exciting. I need cores to make my backpack, have my achievements… so now that the Knights have failed I get to wait, and wait, and wait.. not really enough time to do anything else, AND because of GTW (guest to win) I am stuck. Guess I’ll just kill the same Toxics or Aetherblade mobs over and over and over and over and over again…
Oh and if anyone was wondering if Anet adjusted the core drop rate because things were bugged for almost half the event… uh no. Spoon

To everyone else, unfortunately these LS events are a crap shoot as to whether you get into a good instance or one that isn’t. One thought is to wait a few days for things to cool down, then as much as I dislike the requirement for GTW (Guest to Win) for this stuff, just do that and get into lions arch 15 mins before the hour… if you don’t get into a primary instance, you should still have some chance to get into one that has serious players and a good chance for completion…

Pro tip – The Knights scale up the more people are there. Try getting people to split into smaller groups to take them all down, if zerging makes the event too hard.

Pro tip #2 we had no problem taking down the knights in a large zerg sequentially one time, and then it failed another time, and then it worked another time. So strange that people’s experience varies significantly in these events no matter how simple some folks seem to suggest they are…

Useful tip – make sure people get the color buff while fighting the knights, there are a lot of people who don’t realize it boosts damage, or may think standing in the color circles might be damage or debuff. Make sure to post in map chat or say chat for people to pick up the color buff.

The nice thing is that in a zerg you are going to get at least one knight, probably 2 which gets you champ chests and a chance at the powercell things. Of course, if you don’t get all 3 down in time and if you’ve done most of your achievements in LA then you’ll need take one of penguin’s other useful suggestions like go jump… YMMV. Spoon

Doubtful as any Anet dev that plays the game can always get into the main server so it doesn’t really affect them does it.

Actually, when we’re playing the game, our accounts are just like everyone else’s accounts. We do not have easy access at all. I’ve played this content in numerous overflows. Many of us aren’t flagged, but we are out there playing with you.

Ok cool. So you know first hand how your LS world event mechanic and instancing are not compatible with a pleasant gaming experience. Overflow Instancing means there is no way to control the members in your “world” and the complexity of the events requires coordination and at least a certain amount of players with skill, gear, and understanding of the underlying mechanic. While I ran the marrionette thing about 30 times with only 2 completions, I really don’t see myself running the Holo thing much at all. Probably just kill the three knights and then do something else. Group roulette is simply lame and the loot isn’t worth the 15:1 loses. Spoon

You may not realize that the first step you need to follow to succeed in the this LS final installment is guest to Blackgate or other top tier server, no need to try it on your server, that is pointless. Clearly Anet didn’t think people were guesting enough to the top tier servers prior to the LS. Lame. Spoon

Honestly, 45mins on uninterrupted button mashing is too much, there’s no real break between when the knights spawn and the end of the event. And that doesn’t even include how much I personally dislike the scarlet holo fight, it’s just annoying. Spoon

Repeatedly stick a knitting needle into my eyeball? Which would be more painful? As I just started trying to make the ascended version of the Escape from LA backpack as my first go at any crafting beyond exotic and I am really dismayed by the ingredient requirements in terms of time required to attain them, and then the time limit on crafting the individual parts. So far it appears that sticking the knitting needle into my eyeball will be much less painful… Spoon

I have to disagree with you.
My server is doing 1200 civilians every single time when I’ve been in the zone. It doesn’t matter if it is the middle off the night or early morning or prime time. .

Oh I see, since your server is completing every time, you never have to deal with the situation I am in. Lucky you. I have at least 25 runs, with one, and only one run with 1200 citizens saved. Thank you for providing more evidence as to the huge server balance problems we have here. As far as WvW I am not sure you realize that you are agreeing with me completely, that in the middle tiers where things are balanced, the game play is the best. EotM has made it much more difficult for servers with lower WvW population to compete with mid to high pop servers, making things… wait for it!!! more unbalanced.

Everything that has released recently has encouraged people’s desire to stack onto specific server for either WvW victories, or completions of the LS events. I don’t get it, having the various servers so unbalanced makes huge parts of this game much less fun, especially WvW.
The new EotM map makes the population disparity between WvW servers much worse than it was before so gives even more incentive for guilds to move to “better” servers. Now the “qued” servers have an overflow area to play on, but the “non-qued” lose what WvW players they had to EotM, no change for the “qued”.
Complicated large LS events also the same thing, maybe just guesting but it still makes the game less pleasant for those of us who don’t want to server hop.
And while I really am enjoying the Escape from Lion’s Arch, I really wish there was a way I could get an actual completion and have all the civilians saved, the most I have seen is 900, and what is really frustrtating is I have no way, or idea of how to get into an instance that will take saving the civilians seriously… Spoon
PS I am not sure exactly how to sold the server balance problem, but I know that EtoM has made it much worse for my server in WvW…

These big events are Anet fail. The idea is that you organize with your guild or friends to do these big events, you end up doing that and look what happens, a significant number of your group gets shunted to overflow. Until they work out instancing, or don’t design events that max out the maps they are going to be an unpleasant experience for a lot of the player base.

That seems to be an insanely low success rate. One wonders at the amount of development resources that ANet spent on that event. I guess in the longer run the player satisfaction/enticement benefit will justify those resources. So we have a handful of completions across the entire population over the last couple weeks, for those who have gotten completions, is this an event were you are excited to run it at some regular frequency? And if so, why? Are there worm specific loot drops that make the effort appealing beyond the tactical and strategic challenge? Spoon

If you only have 10-20 people then everyone should stay in lane 1 and get one chain severed. Honestly, I have run the marionette at least 15 times now, there have always been 20 or more players per lane and I have one completion. The vast majority are 2 or maykittenains severed. Two of the runs have gotten to 4 chains severed and only one of those was even close to getting the fifth. While I have enjoyed running it, the marionette is an extremely arbitrary event mechanic. You can’t control who goes to a particular platform and it only takes one of the 5 to fail for that try to be a full fail. You really aren’t missing that much, in my observation the completion rate is very low. And afterwards it’s the ubers verses the newbs in chat, where the ubers complain about how easy each fight is and how come the newbs can’t do it. Your best bet is to find a server that is full during your playtimes and guest there if you really must have a completion. I have to say the number of tries to get it done wasn’t justified by the time spent or the loot… just sayin. Spoon

I heard that one server had beaten the worms so far, any others. On Borlis no one even seems to bother running it anymore. I just tried it with a small group of people, just the crimson worm… We got 1 barrel placed. I was running it to just get a few more barrels place for the achievement, in the end 0 barrels placed for me, 4 deaths for the husks, but seriously I love their entangles, they really care about me, they love me to death… Spoon

I’ll just get the meta and that’s all… I’m only interested in lore at this point, marionette’s a laggy zergball despite how “epic” it may look but I must confess that ArenaNet is slowly getting there when it comes to open world real challenges (at least the zergs are a bit more well-split).

Yep! All those cool glittery effects and animations are a nightmare of video spam at these “zerg” events. Great with 5 participants or less, really terrible in a zerg. Anet has a problem that the use all that crap to telegraph “1-shots” so you can “dodge”. The basic game mechanic is not really suited for large zergs…. They did a fair job with the tower fights, and the marionette thing works if you basically just push the “1” button, but the worms are an unplayable mess just like Teq. Spoon

Mobs don’t drop anything in Tequatl either, it’s the end rewards that are worthy!

Hilarious! RNG means that most of the loot from any event is junk, so it’s a number’s game, period. Long events that fail often and are definitely not fun means less chances to hit that loot table at the sweet spot and annoyance getting there. It’s teh maths. More power to those who like Teq or these barrel worms, it ain’t me. Spoon

I just ran my first Tequatl, by guesting to another server. We had very large fairly organized group, we failed I got 2 chests full of the same loot that drops in every 70-80 area in the game. I’m not saying that the drop rate for exotics isn’t much better for Teq but I don’t play GW2 just to chase exotic drops and even if I did, Teq is not the place for a good return on time invested as far as I can tell.

Here is what I liked about the new Tequatl:
1) The idea of coordinated action and the need to defend specific ancillary supports like the batteries. cool idea.

Here is what I didn’t like:
1) the number of people required to kill Tequatl and protect the objectives means that I spend 30 minutes as a huge cloud of name tags clicking “1”, it’s slightly better if I set my video card settings to “best performance” so some many of the players aren’t rendered. I guess it’s ok to fight next to green armymen, but it’s still a huge mess of rendering and name tags.
2) The same knife-edge game dynamics that ANET seems to live on. Either content is trivially easy, like leveling in the 1-15 zones or it’s Tequatl, very little in between, of course this is a slight exaggeration, but it does illustrate a problem in the devs approach to design. Same thing with the Event jumping puzzles….
3) It requires way too much coordination between large groups of people with no real way to communicate between everyone, the chat text is just not viable with all the “instakill” AOEs and other effects.
4) It’s boring. Personally I don’t like being a blob of nametags. I am not sure what to do about this, but I can’t imagine even the people who “like” Tequatl really like that dynamic….

I don’t have the achievement and won’t be running Tequatl again in it’s current state, if other events are made in this paradigm, I guess that will be more stuff I won’t run. There are other games.

I am just going to add after 2 hours trying I can get to the the platform before the presents about 20% of my tries. The slow HP timer death, the wind, and the pointless nature of the PVP set up all demonstrate the devs ability to design really difficult content that highlights a major weak point in the game. There is really easy content, and really really difficult content and that big hole in the middle. That is a very frustrating aspect of the all the content in this game. I am not so sure it’s a great idea to make “holiday events” that point out one of the big reasons people stop playing.
