From the GW2 Beta Event Jon Petersen confirmed they want to add open world dueling. From the chatlog:

Now with mega server technology, open world dueling is my most requested feature!

In world dueling, not open world dueling. An arena type setting would cover this nicely without going against the cooperative world concept.

Read it again. He means open world by “in world”. The first thing he talks about is “empty servers, pvp ones”, thats the system that currently exist. cheers:)

Right. He’s talking about the sPvP servers that people can use (and now there are private servers which work even better). In world can be as simple as going to Southsun to a Consortium run dueling arena (as opposed as having to leave the world to go to the Mists).

The PvE area is coded to be non-competitive. You’re talking about redesigning a huge section of the game, not simply comparing statistics.

Costume duelling works fine though.

I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt with regards to realizing they’re not the same thing.

Why is there still no dueling?

in PvP

Posted by: VOLKON.1290

VOLKON.1290

The open world PvE area simply isn’t designed for dueling, it’s non-competitive at the very core.

leaderboards.
pve already is one giant competition, if you want it to be, yet you can simply ignore it as most people do. adding dueling will not force you to partake in them either. where is the difference? costume brawl is already a pvp experience, most daily activities (accessed from: PVE) involve fighting or competing with other players (except maybe the bell choir during christmas, but even there we had scores).
so no, the pve portion of the game is not inherently non-competitive, it’s quite the opposite if you look at the options. you can make it completely non-competitive by ignoring those options, but the design itself is clear.

that aside: what’s the point? even if it were non-competitive, I don’t see how this has anything to do with adding a new optional feature. I think most people on this thread advocating a dueling feature, apart from a few exceptions, already clearly said they want it completely optional and blockable.

Oh don’t give me that line of guano. Leaderboards are a comparison of how you’re doing compared to others in the non-competitive PvE areas, they have nothing to do with direct conflict in the PvE areas. It’s one thing to show a relative list of achievement points and something completely different (and more complex) to change the code of the entire PvE area to take into account other players no longer automatically being considered allies, what with cross-profession combos, interactions with events and npcs, etc. You add a completely unnecessary layer of complexity and in doing so add a whole new level of potential problems, bugs, etc. The PvE area is coded to be non-competitive. You’re talking about redesigning a huge section of the game, not simply comparing statistics.

VOLKON.1290

You can duel. They have private PvP servers that work wonderfully for that. As a matter of fact, you can set up and plan dueling tournaments, award prizes to the winners, etc. as well as have multiple matches running at the same time.

The open world PvE area simply isn’t designed for dueling, it’s non-competitive at the very core. Maybe they could design something like the Queen’s Gauntlet perhaps, but it wouldn’t be an overnight task even if they were to prioritize it over the many other things they’ve prioritized. However a nice little dueling arena in Southsun hosted by the Consortium would possibly work well… a mini-zone that’s a large arena with stands for onlookers, etc.

Open world dueling? No thanks. Structured dueling? Already exists, but could be enhanced.

Have a laugh once in a while, guys.

I’ll just repeat the same exact thing I said in another thread. Yes because motion sickness and headaches are hilarious

Motion sickness by looking at a bobble-head? I didn’t know such thing even existed.

It doesn’t. Motion sickness is caused by a clash between what your eyes are seeing and what your inner ears are feeling with regards to motion. A bobblehead won’t cause this clash because your eyes see one spot of motion yet the overall is consistent with what your inner ears are feeling.

Basically it appears to be a made up story trying to get this little bit of fun taken away because he’s decided he doesn’t like it.

Last time I got motion sick from a game (it does happen) was a Medal of Honor type shooter maybe ten, fifteen years ago. I had to take Dramamine for a couple days until my brain learned to recognize the input properly and adapted. I’ve been fine since.

So I tried Wildstar and I missed playing GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: VOLKON.1290

VOLKON.1290

GW2 is just a casual grindy game with no proper endgame or challanges.

Pretty much. You forgot to mention the cash shop though, where you can buy skins that should’ve been obtainable in game, and cosplay in the LA chat room with your friends.

WoW is a hard-core grindy game with forceable endgame, no combat, no exploration and mounts etc. to purchase even-though it is pay to play.

Wow is less grindy then GW2 currently.

In Wow I gear a character in fully tiered current raid gear in less then half the time it would take me to craft one ascended set…

There’s a reason for that. In WoW, the “current raid gear” is disposable. It’s only meant to last until the next release that artificially pushes the power curve further along. You’re on a constant treadmill racing to equip the most current set of disposable gear before the next, better set of disposable gear comes out. In GW2, ascended gear is and will remain for a considerable amount of time the top end gear. When you get it, you know you’re not a month away from throwing it in the garbage and replacing it with the next tier of gear.

That is a significant thing you’ve overlooked there.

Something doesn’t make sense here. When you combine all your WXP, all your characters will be at the same rank, so they’ll see your account rank.

Suggestion: Outfit templates.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: VOLKON.1290

VOLKON.1290

This could be worth considering for town clothes in the future (CDI time?), allow players to design their own templates for town clothes outfits. Right now you have outfit sets (well, right now meaning in the near future). If people could create their own town clothing template they could, for example, select a couple pieces from one outfit they purchased, maybe a different piece or three that counts as a “skin”, and save the whole thing under a user given name which then would be treated as an outfit as the future outfits are described. They go into their templates, select “Girls night out” from their list of created templates and now visually display their chosen town clothing look over their armor, even in combat.

I’m pretty sure that the sylvari/pale tree are not dragon minions as one of the sylvari personal stories involves a sylvari from another tree that has neither a dream nor nightmare thus disproving that nightmare is the "natural" state of sylvari. This plus the consistent presentation that once a sylvari turns to nightmare it is irreversible points to the nightmare itself being dragon corruption rather than a natural state being suppressed by the dream.

Except that we have been told that the Sylvari are immune to dragon corruption. Just as other dragon minions are immune to [other] dragon corruption. That’s the only sticky part there.

The existence of other trees that produce sylvari with no knowledge of the Dream or the Nightmare simple highlights (rather pointedly) that the Pale Tree is different. Why it is different, perhaps more sentient, than other similar sylvari trees may have to do with its removal and subsequent planting by Ronan, and Ventari’s overall influence.

Not enough is known about the sylvari to really make an accurate decision. Based on what we do know, many of the given theories (including that they may be dragon minions) remain plausible.

Huh… so it’s possible dragon minions grow on trees?

I think Lion’s Arch is in the way and needs to be dealt with to get to her actual target that lies deep under Lion’s Arch. Imagine Primordius, slowly awakening beneath L.A., deciding to use Scarlett (whom he saw when she was in Omadd’s machine) as a pawn in all this. She thinks she’s going to kill the dragon to get him out of her head (and it doesn’t matter who or what gets in the way) and she’s going to use the ley lines to do it. However, dragons consume magic. If the dragon can get Scarlett to use the ley lines to fire a massive burst of magic at it that could be just the jump start a groggy dragon needs to finish awakening.

Light is constant. Sound travels at varying speeds based on density, etc. Shoot, in a vacuum there is no sound.

I know, but any constant could be used instead of light and any frame of time could be used.
Sound speed in hydrogen during 1/100th of a second, terminal velocity of a mass of 1 kg in vacuum attracted by earth gravity during 1/25th of a second … any thing could be used.

Well… that’s just it. The things you listed aren’t exactly constants. Gravity varies depending where you are on earth. The speed of sound is too varied depending on pressure, type of matter passing through, etc. You want known, set constants. Light in a vacuum travels at a constant speed, period. A second used to be defined as 1/86,400 of a mean solar day, but then people realized the length of the day is slowly but measurable increasing, so that was changed to " the duration of 9192631770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the caesium 133 atom." (SI brochure, Section 2.1.1.3) You can’t just pick something and go with it.

Also double post but the measurement units aren’t just randomly defined. They are tied to constants so they will never change.

E.g. 1 meter = distance light travels in 1/299,xxx,xxx of a second in a vacuum. It isn’t entirely random.

Of course we could just use planck constants for everything…

What he meant is that, why light speed was picked, it couldn’t be the sounds speed? It couldn’t be other fraction of time? All that was arbitrary.

Light is constant. Sound travels at varying speeds based on density, etc. Shoot, in a vacuum there is no sound.
