No. It was Logan. Snaff couldn’t finish his job, because he died, s=while Logan should have protected him.

Major flaw. You’re deliberately hurting players that farm dailies daily. No one has given an explanation as to why their style of play is so superior to those that prefer farming dailies that they can punish those that choose to farm dailies. What gives you the right to decide how other people should gather their APs?

Do you really think some people choose to farm the dailies without going for permanent achievements? I have yet to heard about them. The only people I’ve heard of that are heavily farming dailies since launch are AP farmers which, like me, go for every single achievement in the game. Only those players are affected by my proposition.

With the current system you can’t get all the dailies without spending a lot of time specifically towards it every day. Actually even the most dedicated players (to AP-hunt) tends to skip some of the new sPvP dailies because they take forever. The progressing cap would be equivalent to skipping 3-4 dailies/day for hardcore farmers only . Or fully missing 4-5 days/month.

And for the last part: I’m not deciding how other people should gather APs, I’m proposing to balance my playstyle. If my system is implemented I’ll be one of the firsts to hit the cap.

Your claim that you’re only proposing to balance your style fails for two reasons.

1. It’s not only your style. Whomever you are, you aren’t qualified to impose restrictions on others or to negatively affect others choices of how to play.

2. Balance your own play style. If you need added restrictions put in the game to do that then odds are it’s not the system that’s at fault.

Again. You just dont understand a different mentality. For me there is a huge difference between having 6,000 points out of 500,000 and 6,000 points out of infinity. With the infinity model there is no finish line and goal to aim at. Well technically there is a finish line but it gets moved ahead every singly day so technically if you never reached it you never will becouse it escapes at same speed as you can chase it. With the current daily model, every single day when I do not complete all dailies, I have a feeling of a loss. With the fixed finish line model (even if the finish line is very far and not likely to be reached) all I can do is feel progress. If I dont play GW2 for one day I do not feel the loss becouse the finish line didnt moved an inch and is not escaping me like in the infinity model. With the infinity model every day I do not launch GW2 and complete all dailies I have a feeling of being punished becouse my goal just moved ahead and I can’t “speed up” the other day to make up for it. It’s is not about me vs. other people on the silly leaderboard. It is about me vs. the game’s progression line. Player vs. player competition is zero-sum. For someone to win someone must loose. But fixed progression path is not zero-sum, I can only “win” by moving ahead on the path and getting closer to my goal. If however my goal is escaping me at same speed as I am chasing it (as we have it now) it becomes stressful and compulsive. As I said before, I was not the first who quit solely becouse of this and will not be the last. If there is a possibility to make changes that would keep some players like me in the game and allow them to enjoy it without making other people get upset and quit (would you quit if the daily cap got introduced? would it affect your game fun?), why not debate about it?

To be honest, it probably wouldn’t affect me personally. However, it undoubtedly would affect others. Would it cause others to quit as you claim to have allegedly done, I don’t know, I’m not them. But you would affect others.

Personally, I find it harder to sympathize with people that claim to quit because they’re not restricted in their game play than with those that would quit because of new restrictions added that weren’t there before.

Simple. Almost everyone in this game does dailies. Only a minority (and an extremely small minority) was salvaging 10 mil items or running 9001 CoF. One is not like the other.

I want to see how many players in GW2 will actually reach the treshold of 25,000 AP from dailies alone. Almost everyone?

Very few, even if the game stays for very long. I’d really like the daily APs to be limited in some manner, and the better solution (imho) I came up to is the following:

Progressive cap

Principle: Past X total points from dailies, dailies does not award anymore APs. Every month, the cap X is increased by 500 (numbers are purely indicative. Its meant to be a bit smaller than the maximum one can earn in a month, which is currently around 600)

Players affected: Dailies farmers only. As long as the numbers are correctly set (first cap and monthly increase), only the players that heavily farmed dailies since release will reach the threshold

  • To reach the threshold, one has to have a large amount of APs from dailies AND consistently do more dailies than the monthly increase
  • Even if a player reaches the cap, he will still be able to increase his AP score the following month
  • The system is rather simple, yet effective and does not punish hardcore players, even on the long term
  • It is also more flexible than a hard cap

Please tell me me if you see any flaw in this system.

Major flaw. You’re deliberately hurting players that farm dailies daily. Those at the top are complaining about the amount of work it takes a day to get all the ap. (amount of work it takes to stay at top of leaderboard) So by saying no, you are saying they want it to be harder for them to stay there. What a joke.

Its not a joke. You will most likely not believe me. But if I would have been offered with a trade-off, the daily cap is introduced but in exchange all my AP progress is reset to 0, I would take that deal in a heartbeat. It would allow me to enjoy GW2 again.

Exactly the point I’ve been making. You want to punish people that get more of their APs via dailies than you do. You want to jostle for position on the leader board by removing someone else’s chosen path of advancement.

This has nothing to do with “fixing a system”. This is purely about gaming the system to give one group an advantage over another by denying people that choose to get more AP from dailies their chosen path.

You still greatly misunderstand the agenda. You know what I would really want (as opposed to seek a compromise – daily AP cap is a compromise)? 1. Remove daily AP completly. 2. Remove the AP leaderboard from the game. 3. Hide the AP of other players so that everyone can only see their own AP value. That is what I would really want. Not “jostle for position on the leader board”.

Removing daily AP punishes players like myself that predominantly get our AP from the dailies and monthlies since I for one spend most of my time in WvW (and grab some Living Story on the side). Why is it that you wish to take away my primary path source of achievement points again? You’ve never been clear as to why my chosen style of play isn’t good enough to keep getting APs through regular play.

If the leader board went away I wouldn’t be affected in any way, shape or form.

@Yamiga, so you really want people to believe the proposed changes will make it more difficult for those at the top of the leaderboard to maintain their position?

One of the proposed changes involving capping the daily APs involved removing Aps people already have above the cap. This clearly favors people at the top of the leader boards that got the majority of them through non-daily means and punishes those that rely predominantly on dailies for their APs. Yet I’ve yet to see a single good reason why some people should be punished for one play style and rewarded for another. As a matter of fact, all I’ve seen that actually speaks the truth (regarding how some people feel) is someone saying “they don’t deserve it”.

What GW2 feels like.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

VOLKON.1290

Interestingly enough, somebody over at mmorpg.com (a fairly popular MMO website) just recently started a thread asking players which MMO most disappointed them. Not the worst game, but the MMO that least lived up to player expectations for it and least fulfilled it’s potential. Tons of players posted their choice, and GW2 was the runaway winner … even beating out SWTOR.

The problem with mmorpg though is that people there bash GW2 out of habit because it’s daring to do something different and proving to be more successful than most of their favorite games. Look at the posts some time… people attack the game for things that don’t even exist in the game (P2W cash shop for example, buying ascended gear for gems, other ridiculous claims), so as far as getting anything resembling an honest opinion of GW2 you need to stay far far away from mmorpg.

One thing I noticed is people that claimed to play it for a couple weeks at launch then quit still troll the GW2 forums just to bash the game yet demonstrate no actual working knowledge of the game. It’s almost embarrassing to read some of the dung they make up.

The system works really well the way it is. More often than not I’m getting the daily done simply through normal game play and the little chest on the side catches me by surprise. Why is this possible? Because we have so many options available to us. Yesterday I don’t even recall when I popped the daily, but when I did I looked to see what I completed and noticed a couple easy points were also sitting there, I wound up with I think all but two done and was quite satisfied, especially now that I’m really sneaking up on that 10K award chest.

The real problem here has nothing to do with the format for the daily/monthly points. The problem here is people are trying to change the system in order to give themselves better position on the leader board. People that are grinding APs available outside of the dailies are trying to inhibit people that use dailies as a majority of their point gains in order to give themselves an advantage.

This has nothing to do with being a completionist. This has to do with jostling for position on the leader board by taking away one groups path to more APs than another groups. It was already admitted with the one guy that said he didn’t think people that used dailies for most of their points “deserve” their spots on the leader board. That’s all this is, nothing more.

The achievement point leader board should never have existed to start with. It isn’t a measure of skill but more a measure of people that play a lot more than others since launch. There is no real value in it.

They should reset it every quarter and then maybe it would mean something.

If they did, the vast majority wouldn’t even notice.

I think people who get their majority of AP by temporary achievements do not deserve their leaderboard position (myself included ofc), so I want Anet to move away from the huge emphasis on temporary achievements.
Either make all permanent achievements give at least 10x as many points or limit daily/monthly. Its just plain silly that doing all dailies for 2 days gives more points than building 5 legendaries for example.

And I don’t care about the leader board or people’s positions on it. Since I do mostly WvW, most of my APs come from the daily and monthly list. Why should I have to ever worry about running out of APs available to me because I choose to do a lot of WvW simply because, for some odd reason, you don’t think what I do is good enough to ever get a spot on this leader board? Who are you to decide whether or not how other people play is good enough?

I dont want to limit anyone choices, just a hard cap on daily/monthly achievement points (10k/2.5k would be just great. Casual players will likely never reach it in the next coming years, possible not even by the end of GW2s lifetime, only a select few hardcore achievement point farmers like me will reach it anytime soon.

I know I dont have to do all dailies, but then 1) Would loose my leaderboard position 2) All effort on achievements so far was wasted, because the achievement reward chests are a joke.
Not to mention the whole game is optional, so pointing it I dont have to do all dailies is just silly.

So you wish to deny people that prefer to get the majority of their APs from doing the daily/monthly lists from being able to do so beyond a certain point. Some people like doing it that way. Why should anyone be denied from continuing to do so simply because you don’t want to?

It’s interesting that you mention that only a select few will ever reach the cap (which makes the cap seem even more ridiculous) which gives the impression that there are a select few ahead of you that you’re targeting with this change in order to give yourself an advantage by cutting off their point supply.

This is a change that isn’t needed and will only remove choices for people as the game matures.

A moderator deleted one of my posts and wants me to repost it without the “rude” part, so here we go:
I dont see how they benefit from it. All we ask for is a hard cap on repeatable achievement points. It does not hurt any player to put a 10k point cap on dailies and 2.5k on montlies. The top players still need months to get there. I am top 30 EU and only have 7643 AP from dailies. All it would do is allowing us to focus on the true content of GW2 again instead of spending 6 hours a day for daily AP.

There’s no reason for it. If you’re choosing to fill the full compliment of daily achievements every day, that’s a choice you’re making. Why should anyone else, especially people that almost solely get their APs through dailies, have to worry about a hard cap because you’ve made the personal choice to avoid some content in lieu of filling the daily list every day?

Here’s the thing, and I apologize if the wording reads as rude because that’s not the intent, but I doubt anyone else really cares about your choices to fill the dailies. Your choice doesn’t affect me or anyone else with regards to how we wish to play the game. However now you’re proposing to affect everyone else’s play in order to suit your own… you’re not going to get a lot of support there. In GW2 we have a lot of different ways to do what we want how and when we want to. Taking away choices, especially choices that have been in the game for so long, simply goes against what the game’s about.

No one else cares if you spend six hours filling the daily list because it’s your choice and not affecting anyone else’s play. However if other people’s play is forced to change by any means simply because of choices you’ve made and have decided you don’t like… well, this won’t end well.

What would GW2 be like with trinity?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: VOLKON.1290

VOLKON.1290

The simplest way to think of it is this… if GW2 had the trinity then fights like the Marionette wouldn’t exist. Trinity combat all breaks down to the same script – tank taunts, healer focuses on the tank, every now and then throw a twist at the dps so they don’t fall asleep. Without the trinity we can have fights like this where we divide into five groups which further get divided into five groups which all have to work together successfully in order to favorably progress the fight. There’s a randomness that defies a set script so you need to be on your toes and pay attention.

That couldn’t be farther from the truth.

In fact I think that the devs of GW2 are quite limited in the amount of mechanics that they can introduce to fights because of all the chaos that their PvE group combat engenders. You can’t really reproduce the unique encounter mechanics that games like WoW or FFXIV have and that makes every boss feel unique and different if the fights are random and uncontrollable.

I play a tank in another MMO and I’m doing far more than just sitting in front of a boss and trading blows like an idiot, and I hate to say this but the fights have WAY more interesting mechanics than most of GW2’s PvE encounters. If a MMO has tanks sit in front of bosses and healers spam heals in the back all the time, it’s a problem with that MMO’s developers or game engine, not with the trinity. The trinity can do every fight a DPS-only design can do, and it usually does it better too because it allows people with more defensive-oriented playstyles to play their way and feel useful.

GW2 desperately needs a new PvE model. It doesn’t have to be the trinity (and it probably wouldn’t be) but things need to change. DPS/Control/Support anyone?

We seriously need a CDI on dungeons, fractals and instanced PvE…

I tanked for years in WoW, both main and off tank. You’re forced to build encounters such that you account for one or two tanks based on the size of the party, a certain number of expected healers and then you calculate the rest based on a certain level of dps from everyone else. That is ridiculously limiting.

The Marionette fight as it stands now simply wouldn’t be anywhere near as fun or engaging if there was a trinity system in place. Look at the opening phases… stop the mobs from reaching the portal. Without a trinity everyone has to do their share to slow down and take down the mobs as well as look to help keep your people in your lane up and active. With a trinity you’d need two tanks per lane, one front and one back, with a healer for each tank and enough dps spread out to burn the mobs down. The mobs would get caught in a taunt and forget about hitting the portal, which poops on that mechanic. Then you have the portal/platform phase itself. You’re spread out randomly onto the five platforms each with a champion of it’s own… good luck with a trinity system there. Even if you forced it to work that’s five tanks and five healers plus three dps per platform or you fail.

The trinity forces content into a very narrow range of possibilities with little to no flexibility. You must have n tank(s), you must have n healer(s) and the rest will be dps with a required dps average of a certain value or you fail. That eliminates fights like the Marionette, Tequatl, the Wurms, etc from ever being designed. It results in combat by script with a set cast of actors, and if you forget your lines you fail.

Day-night and weather

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: VOLKON.1290

VOLKON.1290

The key to making darker nights is to do so in a way that is enhanced by the design of the game itself. That’s why personally I like the idea of adding lunar phases and adjusting the darkness of the night based on the phase of the moon that night. Then on the darkest nights (which wouldn’t be crippling dark, just noticeably darker) you could have special mobs that spawn, special loot that drops from those mobs, unique events that trigger in the dark (the Risen are emboldened and move out, attacking outposts and towns, champions spawn in the dark and go on a rampage, etc.)… you could even have certain types of resources become available in the night for new crafting recipes. An enhanced day/night cycle, coupled with lunar phasing to give periods of “darker” nights compared to a full moon for example, could really open the world up to a whole new layer of content added right on the existing maps.

What about removing achievement points for dailies and monthlies? This would lower everyone’s APs considerably (and so might require a tweaking of the AP chest system), but would ensure those that want to max their AP don’t have grind dailies and would give others a chance to get on the leaderboards.

Not sure those at the top would like this solution though…

That would be brutally punishing to those of us that get the majority of our points from doing dailies while in WvW.

Filling a daily task list each and every day is not an achievement, its a 2nd job. The WvW achievements and rank achievements in PvP will be nerfed to realistic levels in a future patch, its already announced. So I dont see why there cant be an adjustment to the way daily/monthly achievements work.
I wouldnt even mind some sort of ingame time machine to retroactively complete living story achievements. Its a fantasy game so it should be doable for Anet.

It’s only a second job if you choose to make it so. Some days I’ll get minimal requirements for the daily, others I’ll come real close to filling the list… it’s what I choose to do on any given day. Taking away the choices of everyone to protect the AP lead of a few is a bad decision no matter how you slice it.

My first impression from that screenshot is that you’re running the wrong resolution, crowding everything in. The stuff on the right of the UI… mine only takes up a fraction of what yours is and I can see a whole lot more horizontally and vertically.

If we could adjust the UI (like in GW1) this would not be a problem. But the real problem here is all the overlapping models and particle effects.

I’m talking about the screen resolution you have your game set at. It looks wrong, too small making everything seem bigger and more crowded. I have no issues at all finding the boss and targeting him, but I’m also on a monitor with a 1920 × 1200 or something like that. Yours just looks like it’s set wrong.

Ok, seriously Anet. What the heck is going on in the below screenshot? Where is the boss, and how do I target him? I can’t click on him, and C targets the closest useless forest creature. Tab selects everything but the boss.

And where is our commander. Where is Angry Bearded Hobo? I targeted him just to be able to see him in all this mess. But still he is nearly impossible to see! And where do we go? Where do we stand when we have the lure on us? I know there’s supposed to be a little red arrow underneath this insane mess.

Was it really designed to be this way?

Oh, and thanks moderators for removing my post that used the word clusterkitten. Seriously? Could have simply edited out the asterixes that I included (not to circumvent the filter, but to censor myself, and still the post got infracted and removed).

Please, I’d love to hear your solution to overflows.

Raising home server caps. Alternatively we could scrap servers entirely and just go back to the district solution of Guild Wars. Not like you get much playtime on your chosen server anyhow.

So you’d break the entire WvW system?

“Team bowling

Team Golf”

-Now lets compare these team sports(lol) to actual team sports.

Bowling vs football
Darts vs hockey

Funny how nothing in the lists at all resembles MMO combat…

The only problem right now is, everyone is trying it. It isn’t designed for mindless zergs.

The problem is not that the zergs are mindless. Dedicated people on TS are trying to get this to work, and still fail. I think that is a bit ludicrous. Getting 20 people to all drop their kegs at the same time?

The marionet is easier because it is limited.

Not much easier though. We just did an organized effort for AG. We had experienced WvW commanders on TS, organizing all the players, and STILL we failed the marionette event as well. So much for casual content. Does all content have to be this hard, and require this much coordination? How will this remain fun after completing it once? It’s such a hassle, and it’s also trial and error on top of that. So the first couple of times are a lot of organization for nothing.

Between you and me… I find content more fun when there’s a real risk of failing… it makes success for satisfying. Old style scripted fights with add-ons screaming what to do when… once you learn the dance they become mindless time consuming hassles. This, to me, is so much better.

@Volkon, nope, it does not create that problem. Just do it like all the other world bosses. Give out a big daily chest for first completion, then give out greens and dragonite for the subsequent runs and people will repeat it. Thats how it works for every other world boss.

Probably in the future it’ll change to a timer more in line with the other bosses (referring to the Wurm). But with two new mega-event bosses on the map you have one-hour cycling right now if you hop boss to boss. That’s a pretty good pace.

Event on a 30 minute cycle so people are more willing to come and go from the map. I realize I didn’t spell this out—but I’m surprised I had to.

You do know that would make things worse? Players would stay on the map longer since it would be respawning shortly.

That’s not true! U can limit the reward once per day! Problem solved!

Creates more problems where you’d wind up with a lot of times that are under/un-populated. People would group, do it once, good luck to the rest of ya.

It’s fine as it is. Right now between the two bosses there’s an hour wait between starts, enough time to do a fight, map hop, organize and do the next with time still to pee.
