What’s hard about it? What’s to even understand? Someone can teleport to a friend in an area they haven’t been to yet… and then they’ve been there and can waypoint with ease. OK, they saved a little time running. How is this a huge benefit? A little time saved by someone means what… they start gathering mats in an area ten minutes faster? Maybe they port to an event that’s happening and really shake things up by having fun. I’m seeing a lot of complaining about a whole lot of not much.

When will we see dueling?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Dueling is a PvP activity so it’s place is only in the Mists and no where else.

The Mists would be ideal, I agree, but Consortium run arenas in Southsun would add an element to the game (getting the Consortium more involved in things) and may start drawing more people to Southsun. Sure, the audience would be there to watch the fights, but a massive karka event in the audience would be worth the price of admission.

You can only instantaneously teleport to waypoints you already have so if a friend is leveling somewhere and you want to go there with your alt to level but don’t have the waypoints yet then it can easily be a 15 min walk. This benefit would take away those 15 min. I think thats pretty huge.

If I waypoint to a friend at a new location as you mention, how does this harm your game play in any way, shape or form? Shoot, would you even know I did it?

VOLKON.1290

Subdue, we’re never going to agree. That much is obvious. The fact that you’re now insisting that second best is equivalent to best shows that.

The most extreme damage difference would be on zerker gear, wherein the difference is roughly 13% in straight direct damage. Add to that the increased proc on crit (once more per 10 hits) and then the extra damage on crit (79% crit damage with ascended, vs 69% with exotics.) So, not only will the person in ascended gear hit for 13% more all the time, but on a crit, they’re going to hit for 10% extra damage, and they’re going to get a critical hit more often.

It’s not a huge difference, but it’s one that will win fights, everything else being equal. It’s something that becomes extremely notable when running glass cannon builds.

All of that adds to my objection, but at the core, it remains the part that you dismissed with a “yea, yea yea”. Sorry, your dismissal doesn’t make my complaint any less relevant.

Beyond that, they could have spent the dev hours wasted on the time gated, gear treadmill, satisfy-the-game-locusts garbage that outright reversed the premise they sold the game under creating something worthwhile.

One issue I have when people start tossing numbers out there is that the numbers represent a perfect offensive scenario, with no attempts by the defensive side to avoid, mitigate or by any other means counter the offense. The reality is that in practice the numbers are considerably smaller.

And once again… there is no gear treadmill. I’m getting the impression that you have no idea what a gear treadmill is, or even worse you actually do know and are deliberately using the term incorrectly in order to invoke an emotional response.

since the introduction of ascnded, and the inhuman amount of gold and time to get it, i feel in prison.

i really hope that something will change

ascended to be gained in more ways? (and shorter ways, am a casual)
make grind only a way to skins and cosmetic chnges or exp powerups or similar.
i d like to log in once a day, and feel that also that little time i play is a pleasure.
not that i m always behind the others

Kevan, stop doing that to yourself. You don’t need ascended… it’s simply there as a final carrot for those that prefer to have a carrot to chase. Don’t ignore the rest of the salad bar because you can’t reach the carrot yet. I have no ascended weapons or armors yet, and I’m quite an active player. Yes, I’m taking my time working towards my first ascended piece, but in the WvW and PvE I do it’s not necessary and doesn’t hold me back in the slightest. Just stop worrying about something you don’t need to worry about. The pressure you’re feeling is self-inflicted.

As a mainly WvW player, I feel the 15%-30% difference between full Exotic and ascended is necessary to continue to be effective.
I would love to change my Warrior from Condition to Zerker but it would take months to get all the Ascended gear I would need to compete :-(

As mainly a WvW player myself I’d love you to change your warrior to zerker. More loot bags for me.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

The best way dueling could fit the GW2 world would be for the Consortium to open up dueling arenas in Southsun where you and your challenger could pay a couple silver and queue up (if there’s a queue) to step into a dueling circle (think similar to the Queen’s Jubilee) and have at it as a spectator sport. The side bets alone would make that worthwhile and you wouldn’t intrude on the cooperative PvE world.

Why are people saying slightly darker nights would affect WvW?

Do you all play with enemy names turned off? Can you not see the super pure RED color of enemy names? How can any semi sighted person miss the huge RED names over everyones head in WvW?

Am I missing something here or are all of you playing WvW with names off? In what mmo ever has a slightly darker night affected WvW? There are HUGE RED NAMES above people.

I feel like I just stepped into crazy town.

So what you’re saying is that ultimately it would be a waste the developers time and resources to bother with it?

You answered your own question and probably didn’t even realize it. Ascended is there because it’s an option for people that do like it. Believe it or not, some people enjoy working away towards better gear, no matter how marginal that “better” is.

Stats swap with not legendary gear

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

VOLKON.1290

One of the things discussed in the CDI (vertical progression one) was adding the ability to change the stats on ascended gear. An idea I personally like is being able to use a t-stone to simply replace the inscription with a new one (changing the stats). It’s a good balance… not as convenient as what legendary is hoped to have yet still allows for players to swap things around as to change builds.

I actually think this is a good idea – it was one of the ideas I came up with for giving PUGs a chance against Tequatl (have an NPC that will drop you into an overflow with harder and more rewarding XYZ).

It’s not a good idea because it would split the playerbase. Instead of fuller maps, maps get much much more empty.

This nails the issue right here.

I think introducing ascended armour was a totally pointless exercise and a waste of the devs time.

They would have been much better introducing Legendary armour instead…same stats as exotic but a awesome skin, a slot for everything (infusions, rune etc…) and each legendary piece changeable to whatever stats you wanted outside of combat.

Everyone would have wanted legendary armour, very few people want ascended armour…

I think we’ll see that next (except same stats as ascended, not exotic). The whole “switching stats” would be an amazing addition.

What I’m really hoping is that out of the CDIs comes the ability to change the stats on ascended gear by using a t-stone (or something) to replace the insignia alone instead of sacrificing a piece of gear to do so. That would be an amazing QoL improvement there for people that try dramatically different builds on occasion.

I prefer horizontal as well. I’m also aware that a large part of the gaming community likes vertical progression. That’s why I’m actually a fan of how vertical progression is done here… easy access to the gear you need to complete the vast majority of the content in the game (aside I think from high-end Fractals), yet there’s that one last tier that gives marginal increases in stats for a considerable investment in time and/or resources but keeps those stat increases well in check such that they don’t obsolete exotics or any content. I think they’ve reached a really nice balance for those that dislike the vertical progression treadmill and those that want vertical progression… as long as ascended remains the final tier. Now… if they add a tier above ascended, especially after I’ve spent months taking my time working towards even my first piece… then I’m likely to be unamused.

To shorten this (ha, 10 pages, shorten, right) ANet lied. They took actions which went counter to what they had spent 5+ years advertising their upcoming game to be.

The other option, which some have put forward, is that they ALWAYS intended to make the changes they have – in that case, they’re guilty of years of false advertising.

Take your pick – either way, one cannot trust what the Devs are saying.

Be specific. Show the exact quotes in the Manifesto (written during game development) where you believe they lied. Simply making an assertion is not a valid argument.

dear god…please it’s enough about court, promise, illegal, false advertis. …etc

-some of us, such as…me, saw in the manifesto a promise and then now feel betrayed.
-some of you don’t. good for you, of course.

the actual point is: although it was promises or not, does manifesto still apply to the future?
imho, the answer is not.
there will be again gear progression? yes, it could happen.
grind? here it is

so…the only thing to do is: (for “haters”)
ask anet to stop the progression. and also grinding and the mandatory crafting way to get ascended.

and also if devs don t give a kitten to what we write here, i’ll continue to express my opinion: that gw2 has become something i don’t like, and would came back to game if some of these things change.
if you agree, support who has the same ideas

krall and someone else like the game as is it now?
write on the forum that you like it as it is and you could leave the game if it goes backwards.
that’s all.
stop trying to prove wrong others’ preferences just to give authority to what you like in the game.

You know… there’s only one paragraph in the Manifesto that even mentions the word “grind”.

It all gets back to our basic design philosophy. Our games aren’t about preparing to have fun, or about grinding for a future fun reward. Our games are designed to be fun from moment to moment.

Now, it can be argued that people choosing to grind for ascended gear (I’m not, just gathering what I need as I play) are grinding for a future fun reward. However there’s still a huge element of “play your own way” in the game here… you have the choice to try and grind out ascendeds as fast as you can… but if you’re not having fun doing that then you’re simply doing it wrong. You may hold the opinion that ascended gear obsoletes exotics, and I respect your right to hold opinions that are wrong, but the fact is that that is only true in your mind, not in the game itself.

The thing that indicates strongly to me that there won’t be a continuing treadmill is the corner ANet painted themselves into with ascended. By that, I mean this… it takes too much personal investment of resources and time for ascended to ever become disposable gear. This isn’t a WoW style of gear progression where the investments people put into the next tier are relatively insignificant (mostly time and whatever offerings to the RNG god they placed at their shrine at home)… comparatively speaking you invest a whole lot more into ascended. The time and gold requirements are huge in comparison. As a result people that spend months equipping their main alone in ascended would be dealt a significant blow by having that gear suddenly become superseded by a new tier. In a nutshell, adding a tier beyond ascended would have far too costly of an impact on far too many players. Besides that, it’s not really needed. They can add more challenging content tuned to our current gear… there’s no need to give the illusion of power by jacking up gear stats and mob stats simultaneously. Game design (with ascended) strongly indicates that ascended will remain the top tier for a good long time, hopefully indefinitely. Like increasing the level cap (another problem compounded by ascended), adding simply for the sake of adding doesn’t really fit in the GW2 paradigm.

Open pvp!!

VOLKON.1290

I kind of like the idea of open world PvP, but it wouldn’t fit in GW2 at all. For starters, there’s next to nothing going on in most maps.

I’m sure there’s quite a few people who’d form a guild for the sole purpose of ganking and griefing people in the champion trains though, lol.

How would the game differentiate between who’s allied with who or enemies with who with regards to combo fields, AoE hitting whomever, etc? This isn’t like WvW with definite sides. In PvE we’re all on the same side.

In short, it wouldn’t. Open world PvP is simply an all out brawl. Any alliance is generally verbal between players, which could easily dissolve and result in backstabbing.

Which is why it would never happen… they’d have to basically rewrite the code for the PvE worlds and would completely go back on the whole concept of working together with everyone whether you’re partied or not.

OK, now that this idea is dead, who wants pie?

Eh… no. Brokers aren’t trolling the GW2 forums trying to make decisions as to whether or not they should buy or sell NCSoft stock. First of all, Guild Wars 2 is only one piece of the puzzle… there are many games under the NCSoft umbrella. Secondly… what else happened in that time period that may have been significant?

if you don’t think that stockbrokers research the companies they’re going to invest their money in, then you should avoid that career choice like it’s the plague. an intelligent stockbroker, who wishes to remain a stockbroker, learns every detail that may impact their financial investment. if they didn’t, they might as well just go to vegas and put everything on red.

Don’t be ridiculous. Of course they research the companies. They look at numbers, facts and figures. They look at trends. They look at projected growth.

They don’t, however, troll the game forums of a subsidiary company to see if there’s an outcry over a decision the subsidiary company made in the game. (Hell, if they did that then ALL game companies would have stock that’s worthless!) When they’re looking at what ANet brings to the NCSoft fold they’re looking at the big picture, the actual data, facts and figures… not you and I and our differing opinions on something silly.

LOL. Have ACCESS to best statistical loot in the game by MAX level. Wait … Need some time to stop laughing …
Ok. In EVERY game character of MAX level have theoretical ACCESS to best statistical loot in the game (maybe there are exclusions when you need to pay real money for BiS, I don’t know. In this case it’s not a game I will play anyway). In WOW you grind by doing raids. In GW2 you grind by doing boring crap without new content. You need to do the same dungeons (call it raids if you want) to get empyreal. What are you talking about ?
I’m not even arguing now about need/want logic here. But your interpretation of the quotation is just fabulous.

Somewhere in a corner, the point quietly sobs, dejected at the fact that it has been completely missed.

Yes, at level 80, you immediately have access to the best statistical loot in the game. This is an indisputable fact. It’s also a fact that a character that reaches max level in a game like WoW does not have immediate access to the best loot (at least it didn’t when I played…). You have (had?) to grind through dungeons then raids after that simply to have a chance at getting anywhere the best loot. If you didn’t raid the latest raid, you had no access, period. (PvP gear was a whole different grind…)

Note: Best statistical loot isn’t about the look, it’s about the stats alone.

in fact, if you take a look at the NCsoft’s financial report, when they announced ascended gear in november, their stock value plummeted.

I’m completely sure NCsoft’s stock has everything to do with GW2 and not with other stuff or other outside influences. It is totally and solely because Ascended was announced.

everything? no, and i never said it did. a significant portion of their stocks? yes, and only a fool would argue otherwise. their stocks didn’t drop down to being worthless, but they did take a significant hit that they still haven’t recovered from. given that gw2 was the most publicized project of theirs at the time, and the massive disapproval of the direction it took (as displayed by the sheer amount of public outcry on these very forums), one would have to be blind not to see the relation the two things have with each other. it’s called deductive reasoning.

Sure… I can see a bunch of brokers over at the korean stock exchange going “WHAT?! Ascended gear?! SELL SELL SELL!!!!!”

nope. public disapproval. that’s what they’d be looking at, and any stockbroker worth his salt is going to know how public views the company they have money invested into. if they don’t do research into everything surrounding where their money is tied up, they’re not going to be stockbrokers for very long. no decent stockbroker is going to invest blindly, and hope they get lucky like they’re in vegas. they’re going to become very familiar with the company and the product, so if the company makes a decision that the public dislike, the stockbroker sell or short sell the stocks instead of losing their investment.

the thing is, though, it certainly wasn’t the entire community. in fact, there was a lot of people who repeatedly argued against those calling for a gear treadmill to be put in. in fact, if you take a look at the NCsoft’s financial report, when they announced ascended gear in november, their stock value plummeted. it took months for it to even stabilize and never gained back how much they lost. it was clearly a bad decision that being pushed by a minority. instead of caving, anet should have just said “no. that goes against our intention for the game and the expectations given to our customers. we’re not going to flush our game down the toilet because a very vocal minorty can’t accept that this isn’t WoW.” and the entire debacle would have been avoided. they would have lost those who would were calling for a treadmill, but would have kept a lot more players in the long run.

Open world (non consensual) PvP is despicable. It’s just for sadistic people who want to gank, bully and harass others.

Or for those who would like a guild x guild?

Or for those who would like to test builds against a friend?

No, you can’t do that in WxW.

I like WxW, (rank 200+), but 90% of the time it is a Player vs Door, Karma Zerg…

They can test it out, creating one new server with Open PvP.

Heart of the Mists does all of the above for those people.

8×8 Conquest is not a GvG.

Also, you don’t have the same stats/sigils/runes on sPvP.

And when the level cap is increased, will we all start again in the new level cap greens?

If they increase the level cap, I will leave the game permanently.

They’ve already said that they’re going to increase the cap at some point.

And that’s fine. I’ll play until that point and move to something else. The only way I’ll stay is if they automatically bump 80s and 80 gear up to the new level cap (Which I can’t see happening). I’ve already leveled my 80(s) and have no interest in grinding out 20 more levels and new gear. This would be a game ender for me, and I know I’m by no means alone in this opinion.

I’d be surprised if they did now… ascended gear and the time and effort that goes into it don’t seem like the type of gear you throw away as a new tier comes along (or a level bump). They may have had been considering that as an option pre-ascended, but the way ascended is designed if there were ever a level cap increase unless they upgraded all ascended gear you’d never see it crafted again.

There’s one thing GW2 doesn’t and probably never will need is a level cap increase. It simply doesn’t make sense to do so.

They do have a point that, and I do agree, the addition of ascended as it currently stands goes against Colin’s original statement (that we should have BiS by lvl 80). However, as time progresses and people build the crafting, it will get to the point where people will be able to craft a set of ascended for a character when it hits 80. We’re just not at that point yet. Allowing people to acquire some of the account bound materials prior to hitting 80 will help this.

Additionally, should they listen to our requests and implement additional ways of acquisition, that would also help to bring it into line with the other armors, and make it more readily obtainable by lvl 80, imo. We just aren’t there yet…

Can’t really argue with that. Well, I could, but it would look silly. I believe at the time of the statement the intent was indeed for characters to hit 80 and have the best (i.e. exotics) available to them, and through crafting, the TP, etc. that was certainly the case. At the time what he was was most definitely true, however the community wanted more so they created ascended without violating the principles of the manifesto (the statement is outside the manifesto, as we all know).

I think it’s also clear Colin misspoke a little due to the fact that you don’t really see level 80 drops until you hit level 80 as opposed to by level 80, so taking one statement made in an interview on the fly as gospel is an error in my opinion. At least I didn’t see an exotic 80 drop until I hit 80… not sure on others.

The reason ascended was introduced makes perfect sense in my opinion. They simply didn’t expect exotics to become so plentiful and easy to get.

This is incorrect and has been proven to be so by quotes in this thread.

No it isn’t.

You couldn’t possibly be more wrong. Collin Johanson himself said, and I quote, “everyone, including casual gamers, by level 80 should have the best statistical loot in the game.”

Actually you’re wrong. All level 80 characters do and did have access to the best statistical loot in the game. You don’t reach level 80 then have to go through a series of weekly dungeon and raid runs to eventually get access to the best statistical loot… it’s all available as soon as you hit 80.

In other MMOs (like WoW for example) you’d have to level up to 80 (at the time for me), then you’ve only just begun the grind of trying to gain access to the best statistical loot. You’d run dungeons to get gear for heroic dungeons and raids, only to get gear for the next raid, ad infinitum.

The best statistical loot in the game is available as soon as you hit level 80. Before you could get it overnight. Now it takes a little longer if you’re driven to getting ascended.

There are chances to get them as drops as well. I’ve seen quite a few in WvW also, apparently from the WvW rank chests.

They addressed a need some people have and did so brilliantly.

well, did so brilliant that people who asked for a treadmill feel that ascended are too much grind for nothing, and people who asked for horizontaly-only progression feel betrayed because of a new BiS.
yeah. really a brilliant move

You’ll never be able to please everyone, and the ones not pleased will complain a lot louder than the people that are. Basic observation of life. I’m a horizontal kind of guy myself and nothing about ascended to me feels even remotely betraying in any fashion. One of these months I’ll get my first piece, no rush, and the game goes on.

Time to jump

Already rage-quitting this jumping puzzle, like I do with 90% of them. xD Hopefully there will be some meaningful content with us people with poor spacebar skills.

I suspect it may be more about jumping shock waves than a jumping puzzle, but you never know. Those thumpers, however, seem ideal to be coughing out shock waves once fully activated.

There is no way in measuring skill without taking reaction time into consideration.

Ever watch a chess match?

You seem to never watched one or you would know you don’t have unlimited time to decide what you do next. You know why Computer started beating the best chess Players?
Because there is for each combinations on the deck a best way to answer, to be a semi profi you Need to know the best answer to the first 10 moves if you are a profi chess Player you Need to know the best answer for moves for about the 32 moves is it skill? Yeah it is the skill to remember the right moves but if a chessplayer like a gamer has the posibility to look up things it’s meaning less since he could just take a Manual and win ( This is how the Computer wins the chess match against the profi Players:))

You said there was no way to measure skill without taking reaction time into account. There’s no twitch in chess.

No it isn’t.

Well, by their own words, they intended for exotics to be plentiful and easy to get. They really shouldn’t have been surprised by the fact they succeeded. Unless, of course, they never wanted to follow on their original stated intentions.

So, either the reason you quoted about why they introduced ascended doesn’t really make sense, or their stated and real design plans were significantly different.

Neither of those is a good thing, but the second option is actually far worse.

They created Guild Wars, where there wasn’t a cry for more powerful gear and there were already time sinks in place for new looks. You got max power gear at level 20 and prettied yourselves up from there. I don’t think they expected such an outcry for an additional tier, more power. So they took care of that crowd the most elegant way they could while still sticking with the soul of the game… add one last tier, slightly more powerful and a lot of work to get. Many people are quite giddily working away as ascended (some having full sets already I think…) and there’s no treadmill introduced. People have their time sinks for nominal progression and it doesn’t affect the game overall by out-balancing content, PvP, etc.

The mistake they may have made, in my opinion with limited knowledge, was underestimating a certain populations drive to seek out more power. Adding ascended gives a great place to begin spreading out comfortably in a horizontally progressive path now without breaking the heart of the game. They addressed a need some people have and did so brilliantly.

PvD has to go

in WvW

The topic title suggested another post referring to WvW only available to play during NA prime time.

After reading it though, yes the PvD has to go, it’s silly that 40 people auto attacking a gate can melt it just as fast as a ram and defenders on wals can’t do much due to AoE caps and the AoE spam on the walls.

Things I would like to see about tower defense:
1. No more damage to gates without siege.
2. Fortification upgrade to fortify the doors too, ram masteries were brought into WvW with no counter to it.

I believe the cap for AoE damage for siege is something like 50… if someone can correct that I’d appreciate it. A handful of people with siege is a great deterrent to PvD. It’s hard to nuke down a door when you’re dead.

Volkon is right.
They introduced Ascended saying that exos were far too easy to obtain (or at least said so, if they had other reasons they never communicated them).

It does not make sense since exos (BIS) were supposed to be like that, but well… Their game their rules I guess

I think originally it was working more or less as intended, but people got them so quickly then were complaining about nothing more to shoot for gear-wise. (Not everyone has fully grasped the idea of working towards skins.) Ascended gear appeases to a degree many of the players that still seek gear progression yet does so in a subtle enough way (stat-wise) to not have any real impact on the game or the content. The time sink is fairly extensive, and when you consider alts people will be working on ascended sets for quite some time. By then new skins or ascended sets can be introduced with no actual stat increase or we could see Legendary gear (again with no stat increase, yet with added perks).

Sub-classes (sub-professions?) would be ok if and only if they don’t result in specializations for your characters. You all know what would happen… if you were able to specialize into something that made you a better healer or a little better at dealing damage then in no time at all elements of the community will delude themselves into thinking that the specialized players are required for certain content. That would be a plague on the game that may have no cure if released. Please, Colin, keep that in mind if the sub-profession concept takes root and begins to grow like Scarlett’s tower.

Unlocks… you could have some interesting coordination events (think Southsun and the Queen Karka, only smaller scale) to gain access to some unlocks. On a simple scale as an example, imagine if three pillars appeared on a map spaced equidistantly apart at a fairly good distance, each guarded by… something. Maybe running with Colin’s mention of druids they’re guarded by a Champion Druid, or perhaps assorted Champion monsters, whatever. Killing the Champion results in a light shining up from the pillar. If the players on the map kill all three Champions within, say, 15 minutes of each other the lights all converge together at a point in the middle and the pillars are activated to interact with. Players would then have a period of time to interact with all three pillars to get attuned. Attuned players would have access to an open-world mini-dungeon directly beneath the point of convergence. All attuned players would then enter and, just running with an idea for a weapon unlock, find a selection of a few new weapons that their profession currently doesn’t have. For example, my mesmer may find he has a choice of a main-hand pistol, a hammer or a rifle. You’d have to select one of these and would be starting with only skill ‘1’ available. Successfully completing the mini-dungeon (which would scale with the number of people, of course) would result in that weapon being unlocked for your character. Failing would mean you’d have to try again, but at least you’d have the skills unlocked (and familiarity with the weapon now). You could do something similar for weapons, skills perhaps (required to replace all your utility skills with one new one and the other two be inaccessible), masteries, etc.

That’s a potential way we could see some unlocks at least… require groups to work together to gain access then modify the players to have to use and master something new to unlock it in a mini-dungeon type scenario.

Its deathwing!!

They wouldn’t waste our time with a little dragon like that.

How was deathwing little exactly? If Im not mistaken, just the act of him coming up from Deepholm shattered Azeroth and transformed the entire world..burning everything creating large cracks and valleys and reshaping everything. I wouldn’t dismiss the concept of deathwing as little because you may not like WoW. Now, whether or not you consider the fight itself difficult is a different story…but the concept and idea of deathwing was epic in scale and had strong ties to lore.

Arenanet could learn something from this and pull a large boss/monster out of lore instead of trying to invent one.

What they don’t tell you is that the only reason Deathwing came up in the first place was because Tequatl beat him up. He was running away.

Nothing would fitt better to a “secret deep below”, than finishing finally the secret around the Name of the Deep Sea Dragon
I think, we will see finally the reveal of the true name of the Elder Deep Sea Dragon, which currently is still after a whopping year the only one, whose Name we don’t know,…

Oh please. It’s Bubbles. Everyone knows that.
