Pro players using any profession with the correct traits and gear can counter the supposedly OP glass cannon thieves.

You shouldn’t need to base your traits and gear around countering one build from a single class – That is not balance.

Once countered, glass cannon backstab thieves shatter just as the name suggests. With 14K hp, no defensive stats whatsoever, and their best burst on cooldown, good players make quick work of them.

Unless they decide to disengage from the fight. If there is more than one person in the fight – which there usually is – then you don’t usually have the time and safety to go play cat and mouse with Thieves, especially if they’ve just jumped 1200 units then disappeared.

Hopefully Anet does the smart thing and nerfs Assassin’s signet so the “OMG I got crit for 14K at under 50% HP” QQ will go away. It’s mostly overkill at that point anyway.

Assassin’s signet is overkill, I agree.

If they nerf backstab then thieves in every part of the game will be pretty useless. DPS is their thing. It’s what makes them worth having in your group or on your team. Take that away and what do they have? Basically just shadow refuge.

If you believe this to be true, then you have an issue, especially because professions in Guild Wars 2 are supposed to be capable at filling various roles and play styles. Just because backstab Thieves need adjusting doesn’t mean Thief should miss out on boosts in other areas, it might even make the profession interesting to play.

There are way too many issues with Guild Wars 2 for it to be considered a PvP game. There is not enough PvP content in the game and the issues regarding balance are way too extreme – I’m not just talking about Thieves.

Maybe in six months, it will be a good PvP game.

Merciless, I’ve come to the opinion that you whine way too much and you’re pretty poor at playing Necromancer. You lack some understanding regarding downed state – Thief is not the only class that can down you while you’re unable to do anything; Guardian, Warrior, Ranger, Elementalist and Mesmer can also do this. It is not overpowered.

Thief’s downed state is fine.

Mesmer’s Moa Morph is also fine, especially if you learn to recognize the animation and dodge, block or CC accordingly. It has 180 second recharge.

However, I do have to agree with a small part of your statement – if you ignore almost five minutes of that video you posted. The Thief near the end did 18,733 damage in two attacks instantly – not including the other half of the burst that came from haste* combined with combo attacks – and that combined with Thief’s escape and evade abilities this is, in my opinion, too much.

*Quickness is fine; but I do wish the others were like Warrior’s variant.

Throw some stunbreakers in your build and try to anticipate where the thief is when he’s stealthed to keep your back to him. If they miss that 1 attack then you have an advantage now.

It’s funny, a few days ago I played my level 80 Thief for the second time in SPvP with a backstab build. I was killing heaps of people very quickly with Basilisk>CnD+Steal (during CnD anim)>Assassin’s Signet>Backstab>Heartseeker (rarely needed). The only issue I had was one Engineer who had the Elixir S trait, but because he was near some others I escaped and went looking for somebody else. Escaping wasn’t particularly difficult with a combination of Shadow Step followed by Hide in Shadows.

Scholar’s runes and an Air sigil add to the fun.

It all happens so fast and unexpectedly that the fail rate is pretty low and it’s about as hard to use as 100blades Warrior – except people don’t see it coming as much and you can run away pretty easily – it’s basically a one trick pony build that’s better than other one trick ponies.

i’m quite confident thet anet won’t nerf/buff around the opinions of a bunch of noobs.

Which is why I’m sure the backstab build will be nerfed, despite the whinings of certain nooby Thieves who want an easy-win build.

I just want Thieves to get nerfed so these forums can finally be bearable again.

It seems like every thread I visit on these forums inevitably turns into a Thief hate thread.

The nature of stealth classes always makes them hated in MMORPG’s. Thief will always be hated, even when it’s far more balanced.

In the future I’ll probably play more of my Thief, once this absurdity goes away. Going to try and make something that plays more like a GW1 Assassin.

Same applies to cold weaponry.

No, the offensive and defensive technologies each have times where they dominate. Currently offensive weapons are ahead but armour and countermeasures are improving and soon they’ll be ahead again.

Guild Wars 2 balance isn’t like this though, currently extreme burst and extreme bunkers dominate.

Yeah because instant weapon switches and internet latency aren’t a thing.

I play with more latency than you and I don’t seem to have much issue with hammer-wielding Warriors.

There’s nothing wrong with Warriors and they are no where near OP. The Thief is the biggest annoyance in the game right now and no amount of exaggerated posts about any other profession is going to change that.

I actually have to say that unlike some other builds, you can both see Hammer Warrior coming and have time to dodge the attacks as they’re slow and telegraphed. If you’re not bringing stun removal to PvP you’re just begging to be stunned, aren’t you?

Basically a guy in plate armor was invincible unless you could overwhelm him with numbers…. that is until guns improved. Then armor of that type became useless, worst than useless it slowed you down and made you an easy target.

i don’t really care what modes we have, but if we only use 1 mode in tournaments and balance professions around that mode the game would be better and more balanced

It’s probably going to get to the point where PvE/WvWvW and PvP skills are balanced separately – as it was in Guild Wars 1. It worked.

But even if they are separated, all modes needs to be considered when balancing is made, regardless of whether you personally like that mode or not.

Thieves are the only profession with no ranged weapons attacks with 1200 range.

Technically not, cluster bomb has 1200 range. But by Thief’s nature they’re a closer ranged class and having abilities like steal and a plethora of stealth skills only improves their ability to get in close to the enemy. Long-range sniping is not in line with the Thief’s theme. Just play a Ranger if you want to do that.

The last thing any class in this game needs is more weapon choices – especially when there are currently already balance issues that need addressing.

That would be alot of work, but you could get the same effect by having leather chest/plate shoulders/plate gauntlets/plate boots and leather pants. (just an example.)

Well yeah, it would be a lot of work. But there will be more content and expansions down the line. The current armour restriction system is good, the lack of diverse appearances in the armour categories is not.

Capes are necessary. Especially if it means in sPvP we don’t need to wear red/blue armours but instead have red/blue capes. They occasionally bothered me back in GW1, but the current alternative is even worse.

I’d rather not do this, but increase the variation in each of the armour categories. For example, there is no reason why there cannot be medium or light armours made of mail, or heavy armours with cloth and leather-like appearances (think of brigandine), etc.

Whats wrong with Gw1 Assassins? Been part of the game meta on more occassions in both PvE and PvP.

Nothing, they were excellent. Ashanor is either a troll or has never played GW1, possibly both.

Anyway yes good point, they didnt have stealth. But IMO its better to add stealth detection than remove stealth

Stealth shouldn’t be removed, at least not now that the game has been released as it’s really too late. Personally I just wish Thief defense had more emphasis on blinds, defensive skills – Dagger Storm, for example, which is rarely used due to “I win” button Thieves Guild – and shadow steps – like the Assassin in GW1.

An increase to the “revealed” timer, which currently stands at three seconds, would be great.

Thief needs a redesign to Assassin’s Signet to stop 1 shot backstabs and change the trait that makes Steal deal damage.

Even better, change the Assassin’s Signet skill so it breaks if stealth is entered and breaks stealth if activated during stealth. Thieves should have extreme burst – but not extreme burst and excellent escape abilities at the same time.

Thief appears, does his thing. You protect yourself, start to counter attack. He vanishes, will come back in a minute after he has healed and recovered initiative. You “win”.

It’s very unsatisfying.

This is exactly why the Thief’s design is inherently flawed. When you combine a mechanic that allows for spamming high damage attacks with the ability to determine when and where combat happens you’re bound to get a scrub class.

Although I think that the Thief, as an “assassin” type class, should have high burst but also stealth. Nerfing any of those two would ruin the concept ie. it would not be a “thief” anymore.

Burning Arrow may be lackluster, but Stronger Bowstring is not. Making LB auto 1200 is insane and make Ranger obsolete.

Not really, considering Stronger Bowstring would need to be changed so it doesn’t offer more range. When I rolled my first alt, I found it it kind of absurd that my Warrior’s Longbow had the same range as the Thief’s Shortbow (except for a few thief skills, that had 1200), despite being the larger weapon.

Burning Arrow could simply be changed to a Longbow version of Sundering Mace (20% faster cooldowns, 10% while foe is burning) and it would be acceptable in my mind.

Punishment for leaving tPvP yes, for hot join, no. Why not for hot join? It’s simple, if I’m playing on a team full of thieves or mesmers I’d rather leave and join a different match – that way there’s a slight possibility that I might join a more enjoyable match.

warriors are one of the few who are balanced, and most people agree.

If by balanced you mean “excellent for jumping noobs in hot join” then I agree, but the difficulty Warriors have finding groups in tPvP is evidence of their current lack of balance. If Warrior can do something, chances are another class can do it better. But that’s ok, I’ve switched to Guardian (like a lot of people it seems), I use my Warrior now for jumping noobs in hot join occasionally.

Defense, the heals you gain from vigorous shouts aren’t significant unless you wear a lot of +healing equipment and doing that just weakens you too much in other areas anyway. Use shouts for Rune of the Soldier, not for healing.

Of those two choices, the first will probably give you the chance to live long enough to see the damage your bleeds are doing… unless of course you’re fighting a player, most of them use condition removal. Warrior condition builds are quite average, actually.
