Things like:
5% more/less damage to other people in WvW
5% more casting speed
5% increase recharge time
5% more life,toughness,power,healing power, etc etc

The name of the game is siege, people vs. people is not the focus of it nor is fun for the people new to the game to be massively inferior in open combat. These mechanics will (by all hopes) never exist and do not exist now (such is the reason for mercenary or guard bane) for good reason. (Also pretty sure they’ve already elaborated that these abilities will never be about player vs. player or player augmenting in such aspects.)

… Also stat/speed/recharge altering is incredibly game breaking.

The orbs were dumb enough.

…Ascended Gear…

This has become such a improperly used “flung the door open” phrase (or slippery slope argument if you want a more common turn) that it’s lost all meaning. Its used in the wrong aspects of the game, in aspects of the game that aren’t even related.

Making upgrades count for something

I never said giving wxp for upgrades so try reading before your talking. I said not having camps give potential points until the upgrades are done but i can see where people would do services to gain potential points.

No, what I mean, is if its ever tied to “upgrades” its going to lead to people just rushing to queue whatever they can and whatever is quickest (Oil/Guards) to start getting their WXP.

Now, if you tiered it such that Oil/Guards was worth as much WXP as it was worth in practical use, then sure but that’d be a hell of a thing to teach to a random pug who’d wonder why he didn’t earn anything for taking the tower. (Not that it isn’t possible and I’d love to see those who pay for the hefty upgrades getting rewarded. I’d probably suggest more a “reward” of WXP when you start being the guy who’s paying for the Walls 1, Doors 1, Walls 2, and the sort which cost an arm and a leg. Upgrading these is almost always helpful and good to encourage, but keep such rewards off of workers, guards, oil, and the rest of these.)

The best way would be to make two to three defensive event procs equal a capture. Putting anything up to the hands of people playing is just going to lead to stupid decisions for the sake of making purple bars go up.

Making upgrades count for something

Make it that just taking camps, towers, keeps or SM gives no potential points at first. Only by upgrading them do they give potential points.

Its already bad enough when someone randomly queues up oil before walls, now you’re going to reward the idiot who rushes to the NPC to get his “WXP!” while kitten the tower to paper walls and doors for several supply runs.

Think through your suggestions before you actually make them.

Want to prevent tower flips? Make defending (while doing something beneficial) worth more.

I’m going to ask but… has anyone considered that the reason they only patched quickness as it is, offered no compensation, and left other classes untouched stable is because there might be another patch in… 3 days or so? Perhaps it was to test the waters on the maneuver before rolling out another update shortly thereafter.

I know they like to update at the end of the month and all but we’re also not following the usual norm of updates (many dev posts immediately before and after a patch) and ANet is notorious for their April Fools pranks (and we already have .dat file miners to help us figure out at least a part of what’s coming… and its already in the game so…).

Or I could be crazy.

  • AOE. I really hate the 5-target cap, it essentially rewards stupid play, and it makes siege weapons too good relative to players. I’d like to see it raised to 8 at least, if only for WVW.

Different games.

Without the cap, you’d instantly kill yourself to Retaliation. You can already almost insta-gib yourself, no cap and you really will insta-gib yourself.

If you want to break the AoE limit, then use the skills that already ignore it:

  • Siege
  • Line spells

Advice to Anet: BIGGER MAPS!

This is probably the biggest reason why our guild would move to Elder Scrolls Online when it comes out. That and my Guardian might get an actual ranged weapon.

The reason your guardian won’t get a real ranged weapon (what the hell does that even mean?) is this thing called: balance.

Also we’re not getting bigger maps, EBG is the limit of what they can make.

Its for open field anti-personnel or tight defenses, it does what it does. I think they tried to limit its capability to not make it dominant over the other abilities.

Laurels, tPvP, and the lure.

These last few days have brought in a lot of new people for s/tPvP because of the Laurels on PvP Monthly. Putting this bit of reward in PvP brought PvEers over but its also giving us something to earn that our characters can use in PvE/WvW whereas, usually, we’re pretty much wholesale disconnected from one another.

Going forward, can we perhaps keep two separate laurel rewards on the monthlies? Reward more for the one done first and then a smaller reward for the second, like 10::5 or so, or even 10::2 if you want to be brutal about it. I realize this will “speed up” the laurel gain but it may well be for the better of PvP to grow back in population.

Keep the dailies as they are, as I’m sure people will complain about “must do PvP to compete!” but change the monthlies to the above and, give how fairly straight forward and easy the PvP monthly is, given a month, even the worst PvEers should be able to get it done.

This + leaderboards (and more expansive leaderboards) might work well to bring some incentive back to PvP. Our MMR would also have more bodies with which to work to make proper ratings… soooo, that seems good too.

I’m not going to tell you you’re wrong. They’re still forced to do it and, if you check, they regularly complain about being blocked by never capping something or other.

The details are irrelevant. I could get my rings by spamming LA for someone to run my butt through the lower ranks while I /afk or just read reddit for a guild queueing up a bounty and get my commendations in 15 minutes off of other people’s work.

Irrelevant as those things that are entirely worthless in other parts of the game!

Seeing as how we were discussing skins in that one part… skins are as worthless in other parts of the game as a title.

Well they should be transparent and say so then rather than say ascended will be available via WvW then not implement it. And there are ways around your problem anyway as others have already noted.

More than likely, they had it planned and reached the issue of: “If we tie it just to Badges…” and without knowing how ranks will actually flow/grow in progress in realtime. Let’s just say that four pieces of gear are not worth turning WvW into PvEers grind zone for loot.

Anet clearly understands this PoV from a PVE perspective, noting how painstaking they are to point out that PVE players won’t have to come into WvW or risk missing something – not even for 15 minutes a week. PVE to PVP at max capability is bad design regardless of how low a threshold you find acceptable.

Except that statement is only about skins.

PvErs will miss out on WvW related things like:

  • Ranks + Passives
  • Rank Titles

And they’ve already given us PvE-free PvP -> Mists. Ascended is an irrelevant imbalance when pitted against coverage, numbers, and commanding prowess. As I said, if the balance is appropriate, a hardcore PvEer in full ascended stepping into WvW should be at a disadvantage to Rank 2000 Commander McAwesome of Jade Quarry in full Exotics.

Would it be neat to have it in WvW? Of course.
Do I care? No, not really. As I said, I don’t even think most of it is PvE gated anymore, just the rings. (Bounties, for example, are a quick and easy way to practice coordination, as I see it.)
Do I care about a couple of rings? Ehhhh. Not really.

The opposite problem, unfairness of acquisition, inequality across modes, also remains if they introduce a new currency or ‘one per day’ type gated acquisition for ascended in the future of WvW, because we are already months behind what PVE players have already been able to acquire.

Dailies since being worth anything have been largely doable from the WvW aspect so we’re only behind on Amulets if you chose not to do the daily which, often times, fell into line of play anyway.

Earrings and Rings are the only ones stuck in PvE… though I wouldn’t even really consider the Earrings PvE gated so much as Influence gated which is universal and doing the actual Guild Missions takes all of 15 minutes once a week.

So… rings. That’s about all that’s actually gated behind PvE on top of PvE.

Possible, and this may be why its delayed. To see how quickly ranks are gained before applying Ascended. If its too easy, above problem persists.

All things considered, and since WvW isn’t about 1v1, what’s more important to you as a WvWer? The new passives or Ascended gear? If they are properly balanced then someone in full ascended who’s spent little to no time in WvW is worth less then someone in exotics who’s spent all their time in WvW.

But how hard is it to add a vendor and sell ascended items for badges? It was said months ago that ascended items would be available via WvW.

Because then everyone will cram in WvW to farm badges to get every piece of Ascended? You can’t be more blind if you cannot see what sort of massive problems that would cause if all Ascended were available (or even just a few) from something you can grind at your leisure.

You’d never get out of queue from PvErs fighting one another in the middle of nowhere just to farm badges.

Ascended is content locked (or in the case of dailies a controlled time flow).


The idea they are going with atm seems to be that:

  • Spend all your time in WvW you gain ranks and become a better character at the important aspects of WvW.
  • Spend all your time in PvE you gain Ascended and be better at PvE.
  • Spend your time in both and get best of both worlds.

A dungeon… for rings.

The rest of ascended is daily/guild related.

After this patch, you won’t need to set foot outside of WvW for the baseline exotic stat combos. This is a good step forward.

There is not much information available, but considering the point system is based on kill tags, the most worthless and zerg friendly metric you could possibly come up with, I think it is safe to say that this system will not implement a way to lose ranking.

I dunno I’m kinda getting bored of the game in general. There are a number of reasons but the main one is that I just can’t think of anything I personally want to accomplish anymore.

That’ll happen with any game, though its nice to have three fairly stable formats in this one (though PvP still needs work) since it lets you switch around.

Soon, though, I will be chasing the Rank X: Killed by Flame Ram. (Make it happen!)

Blackgate Killed By Flame Ram… sounds weird. (Also the culling change is going to be pretty big for me personally.)

How about giving outmanned a buff that scales with population difference bewteen you and the biggest server?

Because it breaks small team skirmishes and would encourage more zerging from the not-outmanned side to counter the buff because any small group would be at a steep disadvantage.

There is no way to make a stat buff work because it’ll either be substantial enough to do the above, resulting ikittenerg reaction to said buff, or it will be utterly meaningless and accomplish nothing anyway. The idea with the current buff is to encourage players to join and get better loot/rewards/money, you know… the shinnies that everyone likes. Giving a buff doesn’t do much of anything as an incentive since it will either not do enough or it will break the game with 30 outmanned people taking on 80.

Stat buffs ultimately punish players who play together during other servers’ off peak times, which is stupid.

There is simply nothing one can do about population without arbitrarily punishing people for playing during their own times if it happens to coincide with another server’s off hours. This is why the glicko was used as a rating in order to attempt to lead us into balanced matches.

But if they made the point system based on an individual players participation…ie points for kills,caps,yak escorts,repels….etc…and then buff the amount of points up by a percentage of how out manned you are, AND buff rewards to those players then smaller groups could help keep their server in the game as far as points which would give players more incentive to log in and play WvW instead of getting frustrated and giving up by Monday and never logging into WvW again for the week.

First, they do award points based on individual participation: yaks and sentries reward up to three players involved points for the kill; capping and defending reward points on the tics and making that scale by number and then further scale by relative populations would cause two issues: in a full map (for all sides) the team that has crammed all its players in one spot wins more points (punishing small group activity), and it makes other players’ play time (say SEA/Oceanics who don’t have their own server bracket) worth less, no one wants to be in the time bracket of: “I play during X off hours and am/my effort is worth less because I don’t play during peak Y hours.”

Now, I am a proponent of adding more small group targets like the yaks and sentries but then you start to gain an issue of clutter and you also don’t want to reward a PvP-centric game type with PvE activity.

You can’t do anything about coverage or player pops, thats the name of the game (the game being war), and changing how scoring works isn’t going to do anything to fix those key elements.

Survivor bonus exp has been in the game since launch. Let me tell you how it works: every enemy has a base exp that everyone gets, the killing blow gets the survivor exp bonus which is orders larger than the base.

Zergs do not get full exp… but don’t let pre-established game mechanics get in the way of q.q zergs.

I’m running on Magi’s gear, and i’m at 20k HP without the WvW buffs (I can get near to 24k by the end of the week).

Interesting (WvW bonuses are PvE-side only are they not?). I’m still never going to run full vit, but its nice to know how the numbers line up.

Guardian, Elem, Thief base is 10k.
Engineer, Ranger, Mesmer base is 15k.
Warrior, Necromancer base is 18k (36k DS).

That’s about half of my HP… But indeed it wasn’t hitting that much, so i will assume it was regular ones.

Admittedly, I’ve never run a full-vit Guardian outside of PvP where the stats are a bit different but I’m pretty sure you’re not topping out at 24k? But either way, its close to half of your health.

Okay, he’d still have to stay up 24 hours straight and this would be an incredibly difficult thing to get done once let alone twice, plus we could mass report him.

My point was that he can still lock down a keep or tower while he’s on, even if he’s on for only three hours, and rinse-repeat the process for a while as things fall due to the siege cap.

The reason he can get away with it is he can build it and never come back and we can’t catch him.

I’m not sure if it was superior tho…

Superior hits for 10-12k + bleeds, that’s the majority of a guardian’s health. Two superiors will demolish any attempts to “stand there and take it” unless its done by soldiers geared warriors standing in endless water fields (or if the users have no idea how to time their shots for a spike).

Except death has no penalty in a large zerg. You’re nearly insta-rezzed (and I’m talking from fully dead here). The game would be much more entertaining if only revives could be done in combat, not full resurrects.

No one is going to res you in the middle of battle (from defeated) because it takes a colossal amount of time to do if you are in combat (and anyone waiting to be ressed in a heated battle is wasting time and should be running back). They will res you after the battle, in which case you’ve contributed and accomplished nothing… hence your death was punished by you doing nothing.

Some of things you say make me wonder what game you’re actually playing.

It occurred during beta. In earlier beta even standing in 1 arrow cart’s barrage for the full duration was nearly guaranteed death. It forced players to dodge out of the way, and totally prevented the “zergballing” we see today. Basically siege could be an “area denial” tool. Now, people just tank it and shrug it off.

It was changed because it was stupid. You could lock down a choke indefinitely with a single arrow cart.

And no one is “shrugging off” superior arrow carts or ballista.

One of the WvW problems is that attrition is a viable tactic.

Of course attrition is a viable tactic. A team with superior numbers, no matter how hunkered down you might be, will win by attrition ~ that’s standard warfare (in our current format death is punished by being unable to help and attrition swings both ways for attackers and defenders depening on which half of the map they are in). There is no viable way to punish attrition tactics without wholesale making people terrified of dying because this is a week long format.

People complain enough as it is about a repair fee…

First off, to clarify. Rams do not vanish NOW after 30 minutes. This was a suggested solution.

I know how rams currently work, this whole discussion is on hypotheticals I started. :p

Not to the above quoted: This assumes the griefer can stay up 24 hours straight and not get caught refreshing, and can make it BACK to the rams while still building enough rams to max out. Building a ram by yourself takes time. Building close to 50 of them cannot be done in 1/2 hour. Resetting 50 of them cannot be done in a half hour. It’s a losing uphill 24 hour grind that eventually he couldn’t keep up.

I would imagine that the troll is building his rams, for instance, within garrison at first to siege cap it. He can easily tap every single one of the rams inside garrison while building more rams inside of garrison. If he moves to cap other places, say hills (and barring waypoints), then yes, he’ll eventually lose the rams in garrison. This is fine in that it prevents a troll for siege capping multiple places (as well as preventing post-log capping) but its not doing anything to stop him from siege capping a place… and if he does it correctly that place will fall (since it cannot be defended) and then simply moving to the next spot.

I’m just playing devil’s advocate here.

Yes the timer resets after use.

Then that won’t do much about the trolling until 30 min after the troll is logged, which is more than too much time to lose anything and everything if you cannot defend it. They’re just going to F-tap every ram as they drain more supply and build more siege.

Solotion: Rams despawn after 30 minutes. No one wants them after they use them legit anyways.

Would said timer reset after use? Or just flat out gone in 30 minutes? I’ve seen door fights last longer than 30 minutes, and no one wants their rams poofing out of existence.

We been able to hold Bluevale Workshop on SF BL for about an hour while sieging the bay keep… Eventually SF overwhelmed us due people getting distracted trying to kill Seven Mirrors…

There’s a lot said about “something needs to be done” about the siege trolling but, then I ask, what can actually be done aside from banning said individuals (and that’s never going to be quick because… well more venues for trolling). Any system implemented will be circumventable and I honestly can’t think of an “easy” solution or, hell, much of any solution.

So T1 battles are only long due lag?

No they are long because engagements can last for tens of minutes onto halves of hours because a well entrenched team with the proper siege, communication, and high ground (which every tower offers), can hold out until a loss by pure attrition.

If a tower is well defended its walls falling are half of the battle. Keeps expand on this…

You seem to be in an anti-parallel universe.

“I Remain Standing,” look it up.

Really has no place in this format especially since attrition is a viable tactic for fighting over what the format is about (towers, keeps, etc), would make spawn camping even worse, and doesn’t do anything to punish a zerg or reward defending…. which is what I was talking about.

Half of the posts in here seem to have confused a big team oriented format with hot joins.

This type of progression is dumb and meaningless. Plus its tied to an “every kid gets a trophy” exp system.

This is an unstructured format and as such there’s little to use as a ranking gauge aside from time spent playing; you cannot, for example, gauge win/loss ratio. The best they can do is add some sort of experience growth for holding and defending a tower as well as staking claim to it. While the former is easy to reward with a properly scaled defense event, rewarding “claiming” is harder because who do you reward?
